Team-Focused Approach Can Improve Care for Breast Cancer Patients Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader Cancer is complex. As a result, it often requires various treatment therapies. That’s why Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital uses a team approach to deliver quality cancer care. The Hospital’s Breast Care Center is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, which signifies the highest standards of care for patients with diseases of the breast. Many Medical Disciplines Contribute to Each Care Plan Members of the Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Breast Care Team work collaboratively to develop a plan of care and to monitor patients to meet their unique medical, physical and emotional needs throughout their cancer journeys. Team members include affiliated physicians who specialize in general and plastic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology and pathology, along with rehabilitation specialists and Oncology Nurse Navigator Angela Sisk, MSN, RN, OCN (“Sisk”). Sisk uses her decades of experience as an oncology nurse to guide, educate and support cancer patients from a possible cancer diagnosis through survivorship. She explains how the team approach begins. “We ask newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to meet with a breast surgeon, a medical oncologist – the doctor who manages che-
motherapy – and a radiation oncologist before treatment begins,” says Sisk. “Then these specialists, along with other members of the Breast Care Team, present the patient’s case at a weekly conference. The team discusses evidence-based guidelines and appropriate care before finalizing their recommendation for the patient’s individualized treatment plan.” Each physician brings a different skill set to the care team, looking at each case differently. Team member W. Mike Ratliff, MD (“Dr. Ratliff”), an affiliated surgeon who specializes in diseases of the breast, praises the multidisciplinary approach to patient care. “After everyone presents their findings and recommendations, we will reach consensus on a patient’s treatment plan,” says Dr. Ratliff. “Sometimes one physician will ask, ‘Have you considered this?’ or ‘Should we do that?’ I have no doubt this collegiality has led to improved care for breast cancer patients.” Sisk documents treatment recommendations into each patient’s medical records. The physician who treats the patient first shares the proposed plan, including the order of specific therapies. Maximum time is allowed for questions and acceptance of the plan. “I try to allay my patients’ fears and encourage them emotionally because breast cancer is largely a very treatable disease,” says Dr. Ratliff. “If you can help them and reassure them, then they can say, ‘I can do this,’ and that’s a neat thing to see.”

What’s the science behind gluten free? If there was a wanted poster of the most maligned protein, gluten would be on it. Whether it be the prevalence of gluten free recipes or the prominent gluten free labels on many grocery store items, gluten is enemy number one. But should it be? Dr. Pippa Evans, a family doctor in Houston who was formerly a staff physician at Duke Medical Center, said that the biggest problems gluten is known to cause are for those with Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder in individuals who have variants in one of two specific genes. It wasn’t until after World War II in Europe that doctors discovered the connection between gluten and celiac due to the decrease in the availability of wheat and the declining mortality rates in celiac patients. In the United States, a 1980 article in the Journal of Gastroenterology and a 1993 JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association piece helped entrench the celiac/gluten connection in people’s minds. The JAMA article, authored by celiac expert Dr. Alessio Fasano, noted that Celiac Disease is actually present in 1 in 133 Americans, which is ten times higher than what researchers originally thought. Dr. Evans notes that although eliminating wheat is the way to get rid of most gluten in your diet, gluten is only one of the proteins present in wheat. And that for those who don’t have a true gluten allergy, or gluten sensitivity, elminating wheat can prevent people from getting many research demonstrated benefits of whole grains, such as the prevention of coronary artery disease and diabetes. “Gluten has been vilified,” said Dr. Evans. “Pork rinds don’t have gluten but that doesn’t mean they are good for you. In the 1980s, people weren’t eating eggs because of the literature linking high cholesterol and heart attacks. But we missed a step.” Dr. Evans explains that the cholesterol level in eggs isn’t nearly as harmful as saturated and trans fat on blood cholesterol – and eggs have other nutrients that are helpful. “Gluten can be a scapegoat for dietary woes,” said Dr. Evans, who notes that for some people a gluten sensitivity is dose dependent. “But if you do

Houston Food Bank serves seniors in the local community By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader The Leader’s readers enjoy living in some of the most desirable areas in Houston. Still, these communities are old by Houston’s standards, and more than a few of the original residents are aging along with them. This vulnerable population often lives on a fixed income falling well below the national average. The number of local seniors trying to survive in poverty is, at best, alarming. According to Healthcare CEO, an agency dedicated to the study of healthcare in Texas, 43 percent of Houston’s senior households have in-

Even with help, can these members of our community afford to pay their bills - and still eat? In many cases, the answer is “no,” but the Houston Food Bank is stepping in to help. The agency is working to provide additional assistance to Houston’s senior citizens through increased distribution of its free Senior Box Program. Blue light: how it affects your eyes and health By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com The light that illuminates computers, televisions, and cellphones is called blue light, and while it is not a new phenomenon, the risks of too much exposure from blue light can have lasting negative effects on your eyes, brain, body, and sleep patterns. Blue light is a part of the visible light spectrum. Blue light has a short wavelength of 450495 nm that causes it to produce higher energy than light with longer wavelengths, such as red or orange light. The sun produces a natural blue light, while indoors artificial blue light emits from technology devices and fluorescent and LED bulbs. “Blue light because of its frequency interferes with particles in the atmosphere, which causes glare and in turn creates headaches and eye strain,” said Dr. Dora Cantu of Opia Vision Center, located off West 27th Street. Overexposure to blue light can cause symptoms among many people today whether they are older or younger in age. Along with eyestrain that can lead to mild or blaring headaches after a few hours on the computer, some people have tired or itchy eyes after a day at the office. But eyestrain is only the beginning, and many people are in danger of greater vision loss. A recent study shows a link between overexposure to blue light and macular degeneration. The central part of the retina is irreversibly damaged in those who suffer from macular degeneration. The central part of the retina is called the macula and it is the inner back layer that records the images we see and focuses our vision. The reason blue light is linked to be possible
cause for macular degeneration is because of the way blue light penetrates the eye. If the eye is overexposed it can damage the macula, thus creating macular degeneration. Macular degeneration creates vision loss in our sharp vision. Sharp vision is the sight that we need to be able to drive a car, read a book, recognize a face, and even see color. While it does not lead to complete blindness, it does make it harder to live a normal life. There is an estimated eleven million Americans living with macular degeneration. Retina specialists are predicting that the number will likely double by the time the younger generation reaches the age where macular degeneration is a cause for worry. That age is usually fifty years old and up, but more often the sufferers are in their seventies. Specialists are worried they will begin to see people with signs of macular degeneration more often in people in their fifties than their seventies. They also believe people who have a family history of macular degeneration, who are already prone to have it, will get this eye disease at a younger age. During the day, the eyes protect themselves from blue light. The eyes have a thin layer that coats the retina, but the layer isn’t very strong. It weakens after too much blue light exposure and it’s completely absent during the nighttime hours. Blue light in the dark has extensive penalties for the eyes as well as the circadian rhythm and melatonin levels. The circadian rhythm is your body’s biological clock. It also helps the body recognize when it is time to go to sleep and wake up. Research has shown exposure to blue light at night suppresses the melatonin production levels. Melatonin is a hormone that
is secreted by the pineal gland and that’s what controls the sleep and wake cycles. Generally, the melatonin begins to release a few hours before your routine bedtime. Though the hormone does not put you to sleep it does make you feel more tired. The suppression of melatonin comes from the blue light coming from a device or light bulb. It can also happen if enough blue light simply hits your eye long enough to absorb the light and you don’t have to look directly into blue light for it to effect you. Some of the symptoms of over exposure to blue light during the night hours are insomnia, trouble falling asleep, not getting enough hours of sleep, and tiredness during the day. Sleep derivation can also cause the immune system to be impaired and make a person more susceptible to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. “If we can block the blue wave length, then we can block glare and protect your eyes from harmful diseases,” said Dr. Cantu. Luckily there is new technology that will make it easier to combat the effects of blue light exposure. “At Opia Vision Center we are receiving a new technology called NeuroLens. This technology is arriving for the first time
in Texas to our clinic on April 16 and is specifically designed to prevent eye fatigue caused by digital devices and their blue light.” The clinic will offer in person
computer fatigue screenings to help decide whether someone needs the NeuroLens, which are special coded lenses that go into regular eyeglass frames. Whether someone is nearsighted, farsighted, or have perfect vision, these lenses will protect their eyes from potential health problems. On the Oak Forest Facebook page Eric Ochoa suggested getting a pair of Gunnar glasses for prolonged sessions in front of screens. The lenses are designed to give the wearer extra focusing power with proprietary tints, which will give the wearer clearer vision while blocking blue light. They offer computer, gaming, prescription, and sun-
glass options. Specialists recommend wearing glasses with specially constructed lenses, like, the NeuroLens and Gunnar Lens, that deflect blue light. Eye Doctors also advise people to turn off all devices that emit blue light two to three hours before going to bed if they have trouble falling asleep at night. These few changes in a person’s routine may very well make an immense difference and defend against potential eye and health problems.

Murals grace neighborhoods By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com The Mini Murals project in Houston has become an enjoyment to all passerby’s. The project takes electrical boxes and commissions local artists to use them as a blank canvas. Oak Forest has had the pleasure of a mini mural of Willie Nelson and the Heights, Ann Richards. But there are many more in our area enhancing the urban scenery. On Heights Boulevard at Center Street the electrical box has been turned into a bright, head-turning display. At a young age graffiti invigorated Wiley Robertson’s interest in art due to the bold colors and pop art nature of it. When doing the mural, he knew he had to incorporate that style With this location being just down the street from the Art Car Museum, Robertson was also inspired by the art car culture and his dad, an artist involved with the museum. “The art car in front of the skyline, the side that faces I-10, is actually my dad’s latest art car so I felt it very appropriate to use his work in this mural to pay honor to my dad’s work,” Robertson said. This mural location meant a lot to Robertson to paint. Having lived in the neighborhood for years, he was honored to be chosen to create a piece inspired by the community he calls home. “As an artist who puts his work in the public eye constantly it is a huge responsibility to not take [the project] for granted,” Robertson said. “thousands if not millions of people will see this mural over the next decade and I take that very serious as I try to put forth the best possible art work that I can forward into the world.” Another mini mural located at Beauchamp and Pecore features adorable cartoon animals, including a purple unicorn, eating ice cream. The artist, Tra’ Slaughter, created the piece in honor of Travis Elementary. He asked the children what they would like in the mural and the result is the cumulation of their ideas. The mural at Washington and Yale by the same artist was sponsored by Primeway Federal Credit Union. He created the word “Houston” using a different font for each letter to represent the diversity of Houston and included Sam Houston on his horse as an emblem of history for the city. “As an artist, I strive for inclusion of the viewer in my work. Specifically, with street art I work to create a piece that people can relate to in their own way,” Slaughter said. He also mentions how his Oak Forest and Heights mini murals were his favorite to paint because of the countless friendly faces who stopped by

while he was painting to say how much they loved it. “I also drive by those murals quite often and it’s always sweet to hear my five-year old from the back seat, ‘Daddy, there’s one of your paintings’,” Slaughter said. Slaughter is also the artist for the mini mural of Ann Richards at 6th Street and Yale. Other mini murals in the area include Sergio Cornejo’s at 19th Street and Yale, which features brightly colored cassette tapes, and Shelbi-Nicole’s at Heights Boulevard and 14th Street, which is painted to resemble a bookcase. Artist Roger Seward has painted three electrical boxes for our neighborhoods. One at 43rd and Oak Forest that looks like a forest, squirrels and all. The next is at 18th Street and Elle that pays homage to our bayou. And lastly, at Houston Avenue and White Oak that features a fire hydrant seemingly exploding. The last two mini murals come from the artist known as W3r3on3, who painted Willie Nelson at Ella and 34th Street and the trees at 43rd and Rosslyn.

Foodbank from P. 1B America’s” Food Bank of the Year in 2015. Founded in 1982, the nonprofit agency serves about 800,000 men, women and children annually in Harris and surrounding counties. Houston Food Bank’s successful Senior Box Program is designed to improve nutrition for income-eligible seniors, 60 and above. The federally-funded effort distributes Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) items from the USDA, managed by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Seniors receive monthly food boxes containing non-perishable vegetables and fruit, cereal, pasta, a two-pound block of cheese, and protein such as non-perishable tuna, chili, and stew. The Houston Food Bank often adds fresh produce, to the delight of its clients. The average box is valued at about $50 and, at the time of this writing, 12,106 Harris County seniors benefit from the program each month. “We are looking for additional
distribution sites in the near north, sites such as multi-service centers, senior living facilities, churches and similar locations from which to distribute,” says Kathy Lipman, Senior Box Manager with Houston Food Bank. “We can’t offer individual, doorto-door delivery, so we schedule distributions sites once a month, and our seniors or their family members, meet us there. Since our staff handles all aspects of processing and distributing, it’s easy for a site to host our service.” Some seniors in the program developed “coping strategies” prior to the help offered by the box program. Statistics report that 40 percent watered down food to “stretch it out.” About 52 percent reported consuming expired food rather than face the expense of buying fresh. An alarming 63 percent of Texas seniors sometimes forgo eating altogether, choosing to buy lifesaving medications instead. “Our seniors are so grateful
Gluten from P. 1B cut out wheat, you need to be aware of how you are replacing what you’re not getting.” For those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Dr. Evans said that one approach is the low FODMAP diet. FODMAPs is an abbreviation referring to Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. As the Healthline website puts it, FODMAPs are a group of fermentable carbs that aggravate gut symptoms in sensitive people. They’re found in a wide range of foods. Examples include wheat, soft cheeses, garlic, onions and certain fruits and vegetables. “We don’t understand completely why it helps people, but it does,” said Dr. Evans. She cites a December 2017 study by researchers at Monash University in Australia and the University of Oslo in Norway that was published in Gastroenterology. The 59 subjects with non-celiac gluten sensitivity were on one of three diets. Participants were randomly assigned to groups placed on diets containing gluten, fructans, or placebo, concealed in muesli bars, for seven days. The researchers found that it was fructan, not gluten, that induced symptoms. Fructans, also known as fructooligosaccharides, occur in foods such as agave, arti-
chokes, asparagus, leeks, garlic, onions, yacón, jicama, and yes, wheat. Dr. Evans said that while some people may feel better after cutting out gluten – with weight loss and increased energy – that could also be the byproduct of following a lower carb diet. “With any medical state, there are black and white states – like pregnancy, you either are pregnant or you’re not – and then there are spectrums. With Type 2 diabetes, there’s a spectrum of symptoms which different approaches help alleviate. The same is true for a wheat sensitivity. Some people may feel better simply having less gluten, while others need to have next to none. Most people will do well with a diet that contains whole grains, including wheat.” For her patients, she recommends eating the rainbow everyday – eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables – as well as shopping the perimeter of the grocery store. She also recommends avoiding products that have enriched wheat flour as the primary ingredient. “The refined flour has not been demonstrated by research to have the health benefits of whole grains,” said Dr. Evans.
for the help. We get big hugs all the time, making it very rewarding for us too,” Lipman continued. “Each box weighs about 30 pounds, but it is remarkable how creative our clients get when it comes to moving the boxes to their apartments or cars. It they are in a wheelchair, they put the box on their laps and wheel away. Some load them onto the seats of their walkers. Others use a piece of luggage with wheels on it to haul the items. It’s amazing to see. I think that’s what hunger does - it’s a formidable motivator,” Lipman concluded.
Citizens age 60 and above interested in applying for the Senior Box Program may apply in person at a location near them. If an individual is unable to apply in person, he or she can send a representative. A list of sites and hours can be found at www. houstonfoodbank.org/seniorbox Anyone with a location that would be appropriate as a distribution site is encouraged to call Houston Food Bank’s Senior Box Program offices at 832-3699390, or email Klipman@houstonfoodbank.org. There is no charge for the service.

The top four finishers in each event at district advance to the Area Meet with the top four in each event at Area moving on to the Region III-6A competition, which is the last step before the 6A state event next month in Austin. The Bulldogs were the district champs in the 4-x-200meter relay (1:32.97) for their
only gold medal, but they medaled in the two of the three relays to secure 36 of the team’s 57 points. Besides their win in the 800 relay, they were third in the 4x-100, placing just seven-one hundredths of a second behind second place Bellaire. Xavion Solomon, Erick Hubert, Curtis Melrose, and E’Munn Parker on the anchor leg teamed up to win the 4-x-200 with the only time under 1:33. Chavez and Bellaire were right on the Bulldogs’ heels the entire way and those schools had a photo-finish for second place with Chavez coming in second (1:33.11) and Bellaire officially third (1:33.12). The Bulldogs brought home
the bronze medal in the 400meter relay (43.66), placing third in a race that saw them, first-place Lamar (42.75) and second place Bellaire (43.59) separated by less than a second. Xavion Solomon, Melrose, Norre Citizen, and Parker on the anchor leg ran that relay for the Bulldogs. Besides his work on the relays, Parker was one of three individuals from Heights High School to qualify for the upcoming Area 17/18 meet. The Heights’ best individual showing came from junior DeGiovanni Williams in the long jumper, where he was second (22-1.5) with his distance. Lamar’s Ashton Conner, who also won the 200-meter dash,
was the long jump champion (22-08.5). Parker came in third (22.50) for the Heights in the 200meter race to earn himself a bronze medal. Lamar runners were first (22.20) and second (22.30) with Parker was right behind both of them in a tight race that had the top five places less than a half-second apart. Besides the medal, Parker also ran a strong race in the finals, after he came in fifth in the preliminaries (22.89). Parker ran nearly half-a-second faster in the finals than he did in the prelim, putting him on the medal stand. Junior distance runner Evan Klein was the third individual
to qualify for the Area Meet, and he had a strong showing overall, scoring points for his team in three different events. Klein took fourth place (10:36.19) in the 3,200-meter run to keep his season going as he will compete in the twomile run at the upcoming Area meet. A Lamar runner won it at 10 minutes flat, just edging out a Bellaire distance runner, who was second and less than three second behind him. Klein just missed qualifying in the 1,600, placing fifth (4:43.73). Despite the mile length, it was close at the finish line with the winning time (4:33.98) less than 10 seconds ahead of Klein’s performance.
He was also sixth in the 800 (2:07.08), to finish a busy and productive three days of competition for his team. The winner from Lamar ran the only time under two minutes (1:59.30) and the five runners ahead of Klein all came in under 2:04. The Bulldogs 4-x-400 relay came in fifth (3:45.81), leaving them one spot shy of reaching the Area round. Leonardo Garza, Derrick Smith, Andrew Carnizal, and Jonathan Garcia made up the Heights mile relay squad. Lamar was the boys easy 18-6A team champion, scoring 230 points to place far ahead of runner-up Westbury, which finished with 91.
Ram boys, girls make strong showing at District 18-6A meet By Mike Tenney For The Leader With strong showings in the sprints, the Waltrip girls track and field team had a trio of district champions at last week’s 18-6A meet at Barnett Stadium. Those girls, along with a couple of others, will now advance to the Area 23/24 meet Thursday, April 19 with the top two in each event moving on to the Region III competition and a shot at getting to the state meet next month in Austin. Senior Amber Johnson was the district winner for Waltrip in both the 100- and 200-meter races, and she also helped the 4-x-100 relay bring home the gold medal as the Rams finished tied for fourth place in the team standings with Sharpstown. Both the Rams and the Apollos scored 58 points and were just two points behind third place Wisdom, which finished with 60. They were also both just three points ahead of fifth place Madison, which had 55. Sterling won the meet with 135 points and Northside was a distant second with 78 points as the real competition was for team placing after Sterling. Johnson led Waltrip’s strong
effort as the Rams went 1-2 in the 100 with freshman Ayana Fletcher coming in second. Johnson won the meet’s shortest race (12.14) rather impressively, finishing a full second over Fletcher (13.29), who ran very well in her first varsity district meet as a ninthgrader. The pair also were first and second respectively, in the prelims with fast times that they improved on in the finals two days later. Johnson was first in the prelims (13.09) and Fletcherwas right behind her for second (13.70). Johnson was also more than solid in the 200, winning it (26.14) in a race that saw only the top three finishers close with times under 27 seconds. Again Johnson won the prelims and ran a better time in the finals than she did in her first race (26.54) as she knocked nearly half-a-second off to advance. Both Johnson and Fletcher were part of the Rams’ third gold medal, running the third and fourth legs on their winning 4-x-100 relay squad (51.08). Chrislyn Johnson and freshman Lillian Espinosa were the first two girls on that relay, meaning half of the group were ninth graders competing in their first district track meet.
The 400 relay was a close race to the end as well with Sterling coming in a tight second (51.17) and Northside third (52.08) as one full second separated the three teams. Espinosa secured her own medal in the 400-meter run, placing second (1:03.06) with the final time below 1:04. The winning time (1:01.48) came from a Houston Wisdom runner. Espinosa was also the runner-up in the prelims (1:01.75) with three girls running times under 1:03 in their first race. Taleah Atkinson just missed qualifying in the shot put, as he placed fifth (26-02.5). The first place distance was 32 feet even with only two throws longer than 30 feet among the group. Waltrip boys The boys will also at least three individuals and two relays to this week’s Area meet after they had a nice showing at the district meet. Senior Tyrell Buard was the team’s only district champ, winning the shot put (48-09) by more than four feet. In all, only three heaves went farther than 40 feet. The Rams just missed having two shot putters advance to the next round with freshman Jacob Escobeda coming in fifth (3702.5) overall.
The Leader’s 2nd Annual
Orvis Fowler was second in the long jump (21-0) for the Rams as only two jumpers in the 24-5A went longer than 21 feet, but the top five finishers all went farther than 20 feet. It was also one of the meet’s largest competitions with 17 jumpers in the field when they started. Junior Andrew Mendez came in third in the 800-meter run (2:11.63) in one of the meet’s tightest races with just two-tenths of a second separating the top three runners. The winning time (2:11.42) and second place mark (2:11.52) were just a stride ahead of Mendez’s pace. Mendez came up just short of moving on in two events after he was fifth in the 1,600 (5:13.46). Again it was a close race with less than five seconds between the top five finishers as the winning mark was a 5:08.12. The Rams will have two relay teams at the upcoming Area Meet after they were third in the 4-x-100 for a bronze medal and fourth in the 4-x-200. Kevion Thompson, Caleb Lastrape, Coley Barnes, and Cameron Boudreaux made up the 400 relay group that was third (44.40) while Johnson, Lastrape, Fowler, and Boudreaux again on the anchor made up the 800 re-
lay (1:33.12). Sterling won the 400 relay (43.56) but was less than a second ahead of the Rams. Madison took the 800 relay (1:31.89), but again it was close with Waltrip just 1.2 seconds behind them. Boudreaux came up one place short of getting to the Area Round in the 200 after he was fifth (23.84) in that sprint event.
T h e
Cameron Williams also just missed advancing in the quarter-mile, placing fifth in the 400 (56.32). As a team, the Rams placed fifth with 53 points. Austin won the team competition with 167 points and Sterling came in second with 113.

oin us on Friday, May 4, from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights as we celebrate the women of our community and the role they play at our homes and our offices. This is the second annual Women @ Work luncheon held by The Leader, and as last year’s attendees can attest, there is no event in the area like this.
What Attendees Said I left last year’s Women at Work Luncheon with a huge smile on my face. Not only did the speaker resonate with me, lunch was delicious and the networking invaluable. What a great experience and value. I look forward to participating again in 2018. Ashley Day, Circa Real Estate Besides getting an opportunity to have a good reason to eat lunch away from our desks and offices, this luncheon was really fun and inspirational. As women, we often think we are the only ones shuffling kids, husbands, homework, cooking, cleaning, and oh yes, try to throw a career into that mix without just completely falling apart! Our speaker last year was great--she not only did all of this but had a very high-powered job and TWINS! We all had lots of laughs, good food and it was great to get to meet the Leader representatives and other women from the area. Really looking forward to the next one! Denie Lunsmann, Buffaloe Floor Covering, Inc.
