Local runners conquer Texas Independence Relay

For Garden Oaks resident Shawn Vaughn, participating in the Texas Independence Relay was an idea she just couldn’t shake.

“It was something that I was invited to do a few years ago but I got pregnant with my third child,” Vaughn said. “Since then, I’d wanted to do it but didn’t know how to set up a team.”

Vaughn educated herself on the race, which was held March 30-31 and totaled more than 183 miles with 36 relay legs of various lengths.

The course started in Gonzales, where Col. John Henry Moore challenged Mexican soldiers trying to retrieve a cannon to “come and take it,” and finished in Houston, where the Battle of San Jacinto helped cement an independent Texas in 1836.

Vaughn’s team, Notorious HRG, completed the two-day course in 30 hours, 12 minutes, and 49 seconds.

Food briefs: Vegan restaurant now open in Heights

By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com From the food truck Ripe Cuisine to its first brick and mortar as Verdine, the restaurant was more than a year in the making.

Verdine, 449 W. 19th St., is now neighbors with Hopdoddy Burger Bar in the Heights Waterworks Development as announced on Verdine’s Instagram page. It is open daily from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

The menu is fully vegan but was designed to appeal to both carnivores and vegetarians.

Entrees include Spinach Dosa, made with spinach-chickpea dosa; Krabby Patty, made with a jackfruit-artichoke crab cake burger; Bistro Burger, made with an organic lentil-walnutmushroom patty; Waterworks Cheeseburger, made with a Beyond Meat burger patty; and Jackfruit Carnitas, made with slow-cooked, smoked jackfruit.

Side options are French fries or sweet potato fries that come with housemade raisin-

sweetened ketchup. Also available is a kale salad with tahinimaple dressing.

A kids and dessert menu are coming soon as well as extended hours.

Balls Out is out After opening in the Heights almost two years ago, the Balls Out Burger brick and mortar has closed.

In a response given to CultureMap, owner Ian Tucker expressed his disappointment that the concept didn’t turn out the way he had hoped, but that rumors of its demise have been exaggerated.

“Not only is the concept alive and well,” Tucker said to CultureMap, “we technically have locations everywhere from Uptown to Downtown and all points in between thanks to the Balls Out Burger food truck, which delivers the same high-quality burgers, fries and shakes that people love, so I take solace in that.”

Revive Development, which owns the property, is searching for a new tenant.

Relay, from P. 1B Vaughn said some of the group got together to run, but there was no formal training.

Before the relay, Torregrossa’s longest race was 7 miles – 14 years beforehand.

“I followed a half-marathon, 12-week training schedule starting in January and did many days of CrossFit in the morning and running at night,” Torregrossa said. “Unfortunately about a month before the race my training was cut short by a knee injury, so I had to take a break from running. Luckily my knee recovered in time.”

Benesch, a runner for 25 years and frequent marathon participant, was drafted the week of the relay to take the place of another injured member.

“I didn’t even have time to stress out about it,” she said.

A test of endurance On the first day of the relay, Torregrossa said the team members all ran one mile at the beginning before splitting up into a running group and resting group. The individual legs of the race ranged from 2.77 miles to 7.11 miles. The women on Vaughn’s team ran between 11 and 20 miles.

Non-runners would leap frog in a van to their next leg. The total race time was about 30 hours, with four- or five-hour breaks for the team members between runs.

“It wasn’t enough time to get good sleep,” Vaughn said.

Brewer ran 15 total miles across three legs of the race, one of them in the middle of the night. She said that was a first for her.

“It was pure adrenaline that pushed me through,” she said.

“I was so tired,” Fieldhouse said.

The team MVP might have been Marysia Norris, who didn’t want to race but volunteered to drive the team van.

“She drove most of the 36 hours, getting out to give runners water (and) take gear,” Cockrum said. “In other words, hers was by far the hardest job.”

The finish line was at the Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park where there was a celebration that included pizza and beer.

“We beat our estimated time by 30 minutes, which means everyone ran faster than they thought they would,” Benesch said. “It was an awesome experience and I’m so glad I got the chance to participate. Strong women pushing through a difficult race, tired, dirty, but still cheering on the other teammates and working toward a common goal.”

That being said, most members said they wouldn’t be back.

“It was a test of personal strength and growth for me,” Brewer said. “It was 30 hours of running and riding in a car.

We slept in a Whataburger and Buc-ee’s parking lot. I’m so glad I’ve got this down in the books, but I’m on to the next challenge.”

“It’s her first one,” she said.

With Vaughn as her mom, it likely won’t be her last.

City’s affordable farmers market program under way From Staff Reports The Houston Health Department is once again making fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable with the launch of its eighth Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets season, which kicked off Wednesday. The 2019 markets will offer SNAP beneficiaries a dollar-for-dollar match up to $20 spent on fresh fruits and vegetables through the Urban Harvest Double Up Houston program.

This year, the season runs

through Sept. 26. Markets are held twice weekly at seven multi-service centers across the city. Sites include the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center at 6719 W. Montgomery Rd., where produce will be available April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 19.

“These markets provide a mutual benefit to farmers, shoppers and local economies by allowing farmers to sell high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables directly to the community, meeting the area’s

demand for fresh produce,” said Dr. Faith Foreman-Hays, head of the city health department’s Office of Chronic Disease, Health Education and Wellness.

Since launching in 2011, the markets have benefited more than 20,000 underserved families and distributed more than 500,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables in Houston.

Protein intake key to healthy diet

Protein is one of three macronutrients needed in the diet to maintain health. It is a component of all living things. It is required by the human body for the most basic of cell activity, including that of bones, muscles and blood. Protein also helps maintain a healthy metabolism and strengthens the immune system.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Much of the body’s communication systems rely on amino acids for things such as neurotransmitters and hormones as well DNA and RNA. Amino acids are obtained through the diet in a variety of ways. Animal proteins are considered complete proteins as they contain the essential amino acids the body needs.

Neighbors: Art cars and cooking for a good cause

These April showers are producing some beautiful flowers!

Julie Hetrick, event chairman, and fellow SPP garden club members have put together a community event that includes four fascinating SPP backyards, the Durham Elementary Gardens, refreshments from Girl Scout Troops 122309 and 122272, and a bargain-hunter’s plant sale.

The backyards feature a pool oasis, beautifully landscaped gardens of flowers, vegetables and fruits, fun edibles and spectacular potted plants.

Garden club experts will be available at the plant sale.

Thursday marked the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who figured out the connection between brain and body 200 years ago.

Crist is a licensed master social worker and executive director, Harris is a licensed master social worker and director of social services, Abbott has a doctorate in physical therapy and is director of education, Rodriguez is manager of therapeutic programs, Perry is manager of special events and Brown is their administrative assistant.

This team works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for hundreds of Houstonarea residents affected by PD through service, education and advocacy.
