Be Your Own Neighbor the
More Revive tenant news at 34th and Ella By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
By Cynthia Lescalleet For The Leader With an eye toward rerenovating the home he had previously tackled as a do-ityourself project, Will Davis and wife Bridgett thought it would be prudent to buy another, smaller home on their street in Woodland Heights to live in during their home’s more professional overhaul and to offer it up thereafter as a rental unit. “I must have tried to buy at least half the houses on the block,” he recalls of the protracted process. In the midst of that, when an adjacent property sold to someone else, he realized being his own neighbor might have long-term benefits. “I like to know what’s going to happen next to us.” Two weeks before Hurricane Ike, in 2008, the couple closed on the property next door on the other side of their home. It had been a rental house for the previous owner. As a small, brick cottage from 1935, the simple floor plan was common for its time, with two bedrooms, a single bathroom, a sleeping porch and a kitchen, dining room and front parlor. Its deep front porch also boosted living space. Before the Davis family – with five young children, including triplets – could move in, even on a temp basis, the home needed some updates of its own. The crisp-andclean results will be on display March 24-25 as part of the Woodland Heights Home Tour, themed “Fresh Traditions Plus Teardown Turnarounds.” The featured home’s sleeping porch, located off the back kitchen and previously accessible only through one of the bedrooms, has been converted into a master bedroom, which now a toilet, shower and double vanity, “like a hotel,” he says of the in-room placement. By reducing the size of a secondary bedroom, there was space for a hallway and staircase to a huge “camp room” upstairs. It served as a dorm room for the Davis youngsters but now doubles as a playroom for the current tenants, who are friends of the owners. “We took out the fence

See Woodland Home Tour Schedule 2B between the yards,” he says. “We’ve got a compound.” When Davis, then in his twenties and dating his now wife, had renovated the larger home next door, “I learned! Don’t do that!” he says of his missteps. An example? “Like an idiot I pulled out all the shiplap.” But he also amassed and salvaged some interesting fittings and finishes that have been installed in the tour property -- which not only kept its shiplap but features it prominently. There’s a cool claw foot tub in the bathroom, for example, and an indestructible ‘50s vintage kitchen stove by O’Keefe and Merritt. It had been stored in his garage for a decade with seemingly little effect.
“I hooked it up and it fired right up.” Elsewhere in the kitchen, the floor plan has been opened up a bit by taking down the shared wall with the dining room. The “nasty” linoleum came up, replaced with reclaimed hardwood to match original flooring. Its dark finish mirrors the similarly stained ceilings. Davis says the shiplap ceiling is his favorite part of the house because of the texture and length of the planks. Some run 20 feet. To gaze upward from the sofa after a long day was almost meditative, he says. “I miss living there, though it was a little cramped.” Davis, who is managing partner of the Liberty Kitch-
Local February housing markets outpace Houston region figures By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Home sales across the Houston region surged in February 2018, while local neighborhoods showed mixed results; meanwhile, local home prices rose nearly across the board and outpaced greater Houston figures according to the latest report from the Houston Association of Realtors. According to the report, sales rose nearly 7 percent in the greater Houston area, while the average home price held steady year-over-year, and average prices saw a modest increase of 3.7 percent. Locally, sales figures ranged from a near-21 percent drop to rises near 10 percent, and prices varied from slight dips to spikes near 24 percent. “February was a positive month overall for Houston real estate, but we really need growth in inventory to ensure that there is a plentiful supply of homes as we enter the spring buying season,” said HAR Chair Kenya Burrell-VanWormer with JP Morgan Chase. Greater Heights/Near
Northside (77008, 77009) South of the 610 Loop, the Heights experienced the third-highest local rate of increase in properties sold, with 106 homes flying off the market in February, surpassing the 99 sold during the same month in 2017 – a 7.1 percent rise, which slightly outpaced the Greater Houston’s rate of 6.8 percent. Meanwhile, home prices rose, with both median ($463,500) and average ($514,416) figures rating greater than the greater Houston region marks of $223,000 and $276,864, respectively. Just east, zip code 77009 saw figures to varying degrees on all fronts. The area’s home sales saw a slight uptick in February 2018, with sales closing on 65 properties last month compared to 63 the previous year. On the pricing front, the area’s average price flat-lined in 2018 at $403,692, while the 12.7 percent spike in median price -the figure at which half of the homes sold for more and half sold for less – was the most extreme in local neighborhoods, coming in under the wire at $372,000 to close out February.
Garden Oaks/Oak Forest (77018, 77092) Up the road in neighborhoods adjacent to The Leader’s offices, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest showcased a mixed of results depending on the swath of neighborhood. In 77018 (central portion), all categories experienced major surges. Home sales rose 9.6 percent – the largest local spike – to 80 homes in February 2018, while the 10.8 percent spike in median home prices (to $440,000) came in under the wire with the second-highest rise among local neighborhoods. Not to be outdone, average home price in the area rose 21.5 percent to $526,882 as the month closed. In the area’s western portion (77092), however, a different story emerged. Sales of homes dipped from 32 to 28 in February 2018, while the $252,434 average price during the month was a slight downturn from February 2017’s figure of $259,706. Meanwhile, the $245,000 median home price was a modest 1.4 percent rise from this time last year.

en group, had the help of business partner Carl Eaves in the design and build of the cottage redo. Other features include original doors converted to sliders, bold wallpaper and eclectic antiques. Having learned from overopening up the rooms in his first project, Davis opted in the tour house to retain a bit of definition between the parlor and kitchen. Likewise, he kept the trim, windows and built-in bookcases that flank the fireplace. Among the tips from Davis for taking on a similar project is that “if you’re not doing an historical redo, you have to make it functional.” Meanwhile, be aware that removing plaster to reveal the underlying shiplap can make for a drafty interior. He recommends using wallboard beneath it. To share your renovation survival tale, contact Cynthia. Lescalleet@gmail.com.

David Colby tells The Leader that their plans changed a few months ago and they would be moving to a new location on West 18th Street in the Lazybrook/Timbergrove area. Monica Danna with Revive says that the entire west part of the building is filled but there is still some space available. “One tenant could take it all up, or we could split it up, depending on demand,” she said. Danna also has some good news for coffee lovers. “The Avid coffee truck is going to be parking in the old tire shop spot as they explore the idea of a brick and mortar,” she said. “As we search

crease amongst local neighborhoods. Median price was no slouch either, sporting a 10.6 percent rise to $199,000 before the month was done. Rice Military On the southernmost portion of the local area, only 63 home sales were closed

You’ve Got Maids cleaning homes and enriching lives By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Whether a part of the working world or not, house-cleaning can be seen as among the most tedious tasks in a home. But a new cleaning service here in the neighborhood is taking that burden off our shoulders by combining an atypical home cleaning experience, complete with a personalized touch from estimate to completion. You’ve Got Maids of Central Houston Co-founders Raul Wong and his wife Moylam found You’ve Got Maids after Moylam’s layoff from the oil and gas industry and several ultimately fruitless attempts to re-enter. During that time, they said, Moylam discovered a passion for cleaning, and tapped into her lifelong passion of helping others. She had also always desired owning her own business, so following several months of due diligence, the couple pulled the trigger on joining the national residential cleaning franchise. Since February, the Wongs and their crew have diligently worked out of 1431 North Durham to make each home they clean a happier, cleaner, and healthier environment. They simply don’t know any other way. “It’s just been a fantastic reception so far, and it’s a service everyone wants – you want to come home and have a clean house. You don’t want to spend your time cleaning homes when you have so little time left on the weekends,” Raul said. You’ve Got Maid offers topnotch cleaning services to all comers, ranging from the Heights out to Garden Oaks, Timbergrove, Rice Military and beyond. Their services are offered anywhere from a weekly cleaning to once a month – and everything in between – along with a one-time move-in and move-out cleaning. Included in a You’ve Got Maids special is both a deep clean and maintenance cleaning; and prior to any work being done, You’ve Got Maids provides prospects with an initial free estimate – so workers can adapt the experience to each individual customer’s cleaning needs. Auto Home service comes in an exclusive 52-point Spring Clean. During this inspection, maids scrub and clean virtually any available surface in a home, using only HEPA-approved home cleaning equipment and ECOfriendly products. With special focuses on the bathroom, kitchens, floors and dusting, workers will scrub, vacuum and shine their way through the home until customers are satisfied with the level of cleanliness. Cleaning time can range from three to eight hours, depending on square footage of the home, but will always be finished by end-ofday. Additionally, Raul added, many aspects of the 52-point inspection can be conducted by other professionals – but often at additional cost. However, at You’ve Got Maids, it’s all-inclusive. “It’s a very thorough, topto-bottom cleaning, and our maids crawl around your house on their hands and knees,” Moylam said. “Our clients literally breathe better air.” Following completion, the Wongs and You’ve Got Maids also offer a reduced rate for continued maintenance cleaning with regularly scheduled home cleanings. Primarily excluding weekends, maids can swing by at a customer’s scheduled comfort, regardless of work or home life’s schedules. “Time is precious,” Raul said. “Why spend it cleaning, when we can do it while you work or do whatever else you want to do? We can clean whether you’re there or not. It doesn’t really matter to us.” And the service doesn’t end there. Extending a helping hand You’ve Got Maids also partners with Cleaning for A Reason, a non-profit organization that provides the gift of free house cleaning for women
undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. Their goal is to let these women focus on their health and treatment while You’ve Got Maids focuses on, and takes away the worry and work of, cleaning their homes– free of charge. Over the course of the partnership, You’ve Got Maids is proud to have donated more than $115,500 in free cleanings to more than 28,000 women. And in just five weeks of operation locally, the Wongs have already conducted three such house cleanings. “We’re trying to do one or two houses per month – it’s a giving back thing that we want to do,” Raul said. No stone left unturned From a comprehensive training system known as Maid University, a vetting system which sees about 20 candidates interviewed for every hire and assigning personal on-site supervisors to using eco-friendly products and more, the Wongs also leave no stone unturned in hopes of taking the cleaning weight off of customers’ shoulders and ensuring every possible contingency is accounted for. “It’s really all about the detail we’re putting into it,” Moylam said. For more information on You’ve Got Maids of Central Houston’s services or to schedule an initial appointment, visit houston.youvegotmaids.com Once there, residents can submit their house information for a free estimate or call Raul and Moylam at 713-505-1613. /CTEJ Ĺą RO VKNN!! Photo by Eric Schell/Pride Portraits Jim Obergefell, pictured here, will be a special guest at the unveiling of the new Pride Wall in the Heights.
Pride wall open soon in the Heights By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader Heights-area artists recently teamed up with Jenni Tranweaver, owner of Jenni’s Noodle House located at 602 E. 20th St. in the Heights to create a new city landmark. On April 5, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., Houston’s “Be Visible Pride Wall will be unveiled on an outside wall at the Heights noodle house, and all are invited to the celebration. What’s a pride wall? For several years, a business in Montrose hosted a rainbow mural dedicated to Houston’s LGBTQ community. Sometimes called the “gayborhood, Montrose was a good choice, and the wall became a popular spot for photographs. Last month, the business painted the wall black. Noted Heights photographer and gay activist Eric Schell decided to find a new location to host an even better “pride wall. Schell partnered with Heights artist and visual designer Hugo Perez to execute a mural. Then Jenni Tranweaver offered her 64-foot by 16-foot, outdoor wall at Jenni’s Noodle House in the Heights to host the artwork. The landmark will feature a quote from LGBTQ hero Jim Obergefell, who will be the keynote speaker at the unveiling. Obergefell is the gay man who made history in 2015 when he took his fight for same
sex-marriage rights to the U.S. Supreme Court. He won, and from that day forward LGBTQ Americans could marry legally nationwide. Schell is the founder of a nonprofit agency called Pride Portraits and photographs members and allies of the LGBTQ community nationally. The prolific artist has 3,000 portraits in his portfolio including musician Melissa Etheridge, Congressman John Lewis, former Democratic house leader Nancy Pelosi, actress Alyssa Milano, and many others. “Our mission is to represent the LGBTQ community and its allies, one photograph at a time, Schell stated. “Because visibility is crucial to change, this new, free, public art called the ‘Be Visible’ Pride Wall will serve as a reminder for those who care to ‘Be Visible.’ Heights Artist Hugo Perez is the talent behind the new wall. He says the design will borrow elements from the LGBTQ flag blended with floods of light. “As a gay person of color, I am really excited about painting the wall and adding this symbol of love, kindness, peace and equality to our landscape, Perez said.“The wall is not finished yet, but people are already stopping and taking photos with it. The owners of Jenni’s Noodle House, Scott and Jenni Tranweaver, have four locations of their popular Viet-
namese dining spot, and are strong allies of the LGBTQ community. They are raising a son and feel that the pride wall will contribute to a better future for Houston’s youth. “We want to help young people feel comfortable to speak out about who they are, stated Jenni Tranweaver. “We love the Heights; it’s a very diverse, vocal community, and definitely more multi-cultural than Montrose these days. We think it’s the perfect location for the Pride Wall. To Jim Obergefell, appearing at the “Be Visible Pride Wall unveiling was a must. “It’s just as Harvey Milk said. We as a community have to come out, and to be known for who we are. It’s the only way things will change, Obergefell stated. ‘Today, it’s more important than ever. On Friday, June 26, 2015, when the ruling in favor of gay marriage was announced on the steps of the Supreme Court, Obergefell was moving through the crowd of thousands of cheering, crying Americans. Suddenly, he was fielding live TV news interviews with several networks. Just as he was wrapping up with CNN, a producer announced that Obergefell had a phone call, and she handed him a phone. Who could it be, he wondered? It was President Barack Obama. “Congratulations Jim. Love wins, the President said.

First pitch for area little leagues Saturday By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
While the World Champion Houston Astros may not kick off their season until next week, the local area has already caught baseball fever, with Opening Day Festivities taking place this Saturday. Oaks Dads Club More than 500 kids -- combined baseball and softball - from ages 4-14 have signed up to get the mitts popping at the Oaks Dads Club when festivities kick off this weekend. The annual parade and festival, which begins at Waltrip High School and makes its way down Sue Ellen to the fields, will start at 9 a.m. Following the parade, teams and coaches will take part in the opening ceremonies, which include a prayer, team banner competition and introduction of sponsors and board members. Around 10:30 a.m., more festivities await with concession stands opening along with inflatables and kids games until official first pitch between 12:15-12:30 p.m. “Every single year, both as a parent and being on the board, my favorite part is just seeing all the families there celebrating the same cause. It’s the moment they realize what they’re going to be a part

Timbergrove Sports Association Over in Timbergrove, nearly 900 kids between 4-15 years old will take part in baseball and softball in 2018 with the Timbergrove Sports Association. Following opening ceremonies at 11 a.m., attendees will be served a barbecue
lunch. In between lunch and festivities will be a carnival (from 12-4 p.m.) and silent auction (from 10-3 p.m.), with first pitch taking place around noon. “We’re a volunteer-led league, so [Opening Day] signals the culmination of everything -- skills assessment, ordering the uniforms, etc. -- that went into it. It’s a celebration of the start of the year and the fun part of what we do,” Timbergrove Sports Assocation board member Brent Schwartz
said. “For me, it’s all about seeing the players and families be come out to celebrate and have a lot of fun in a safe environment.” For a complete schedule of Opening Day festivities, visit the TSA’s home page at timbergrovesports.com/. Heights Norhill Little League The Heights-Norhill Little League (HNLL) organization will blast off their 63rd Base-
ball and Softball Season this Saturday with their annual parade beginning at 10 a.m. beginning and ending at Stude Park. The parade will include
a record breaking 32 teams ranging from Tee Ball to Senior-Baseball and Senior-Softball teams. Leading festivities will be local cheerleaders, dance groups, a Polka musical group, first responders on their fire truck and the famous Chick-Fil-A Cow. Opening ceremonies will follow to commemorate the multiple divisions that won the District 25 Championships as part of the 2017 Heights-Norhill All-Star Teams, the new 2018 volunteers, and the initiation of the 2018 season with the traditional first pitch. “HNLL has certainly been a growing organization over the recent seasons where families have brought their little ones who want to learn to play the game, make new friends and enjoy spending time outdoors,” Jesus Gonzalez said. “HNLL is inviting the community to share this season with them by coming out to Stude Park to watch and enjoy the grand parade while also supporting the kids and families.”

Panthers making waves as TAPPS meet looms By Mike Tenney For The Leader The St. Pius boys and girls track and field teams have some of the top student-athletes in the area and they have been on display in a big way the first few weeks of winter. Counting the Fort Bend Relays this Saturday, the Panthers have just two meets remaining before their TAPPS District competition in mid-April and from the results so far, they look ready to make a run, literally, at a possible district title. While most of the team did lay low during spring break last week, distance runner Charlie McIntyre, who recently signed a letter-of-intent to run at Austin College in the state capital, competed at the prestigious TSU Relays last weekend in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200- races, doing very well in both. He was 21st in the mile and his time (4:47.81) was just 18 seconds off the pace (4:29.29) as only two of the more than
60 runners in the field finished in under four-and-a-half minutes. McIntyre also had a solid time (10:28.51) in the 3,200 at TSU and again it was packed at the finish line with 49 runners starting in the preliminaries. Sophomore Rushil Desai, who was third at the Kinkaid Relays in the mile (4:43.48) before school let out for a week, along with sophomore Daniel Gerlach also ran the mile for St. Pius X at the TSU competition. Prior to spring break, the Panthers faced a few of the teams they will see at their district meet at the Kinkaid Relays and they excelled with a first-place showing in the 4x-400 relay and a number of second places individually. They won the 1,600 relay (3:28.45) by more than five seconds with Jay Waggoner, Trent Waggoner, Boobie Curry, and Chase Lane teaming up for the win. Waggoner, Curry, and Lane
were also part of a 4-x-100 relay team that was second in that race (43.05). Kaleb Ducros went first, followed by those three runners in the same order they ran in the mile relay. And just about all of those runners took the medal stand individually with each earning silvers in different events. Lane and Waggoner finished second (21.85) and third (22.56), respectively in the 200-meter dash for the Panthers. Curry was second in the 400-meter run (52.55) and St. Pius X did very well in that event with three of the top 10 finishers. Chad Graham was not far behind Curry with his time (53.92) and freshman Snapper Pharr was 10th in a large pack of runners. Junior strongman McKade Matteaur won the shot put (50-9.5) and was second in the discus (122-07) to highlight the Panthers’ efforts in the field events at Kinkaid. For the girls, they will be led by senior Chinwe Akuechiama,
who does a little bit of everything for her team and does it all well. She was a one-woman wrecking ball at the Kinkaid Relays, winning one event, placing third in two more and helping a pair of relay teams takes second place. Akuechiama won the triple jump (34-06) with the only jump over 34 feet in the competition. She was also third in the 100 (13.19) and third in the 800 (2:34.02) and fourth in the long jump (15-11). She completed a busy time by helping the Panthers take silver in the 4-x-100 (50.99) and 4-x-400 relay (4:17.53). Akuechiama went first on the 400 relay followed by Kelsey Scott, Tymberlin Griswell, and Jaiden Jefferson and in the 1,600 relay, Ana LeBlanc went first followed by Chinwe, Kaylee Moses and Babette Bright. Scott came in second in the 400 meter run for the Panthers (59.75) with the final time under a minute in the race.
Rams, Spartans track teams boast top runners By Mike Tenney For The Leader Several Waltrip track and field student-athletes are in the hunt for medals at the upcoming District 24-5A meet, which is scheduled to start Monday, April 2 at Barnett Stadium. The Rams’ schedule is winding down with just one more meet before the district competition, but they have a couple of boys and girls that are near the top of the league with what they have accomplished so far. Senior Tyrell Buard presently has the longest recorded throw in the shot put (44-11) and that appears to be the Rams’ best event overall with two of the top five recorded distances. Besides Buard’s heave of nearly 45 feet for the top spot, teammate Jacob Escobeda has the fifth best distance in the league (33-8.5). Buard’s throw is more than three feet better than the second best length of 41-8. The Rams also should have medal contenders in the 400meter run, the 1,600-, and a couple of different relays. Junior Caleb LaStrape, who ran in the elite TSU Relays last weekend, currently owns the second-fastest showing in the 400 (53.26), trailing only a runner from Houston Sterling (48.60). LaStrapes recorded that time at the Houston Relays to start this month. LaStrape was also the lead runner on the 4x-200 relay team that currently ranks third (1:33.70) among the district listings. Coley Barnes, Christopher Williams, and Cameron Boudreaux were the runners on the rest of the relay that recorded that sizzling time and they are less than two seconds off the pace currently set by four runners from Sterling (1:31.78). Beside LaStrape, Andrew
Mendez holds the second fastest time in the 1,600-meter race (5:14.71), trailing the district’s current leader from Austin by almost 11 seconds (5:03,22). Mendez is also making noise in the 800, where he is in the top five with his fifth place time (2:18.71) from his performance at the Houston Relays. While the time is fifth best, it is just eight seconds off the fastest recorded time (2:10.16) in the 24-5A so far so Mendez is hoping for a good showing in a couple of different events at district. The Rams also have a topfour showing in the 4-x-100 relay (45.44)), which they recorded at the Porter Spartan Relays. However, the 400-meter relay is a close one with Austin leading the way in the district (43.85) with a time that is just less than two seconds faster than Waltrip’s. The Waltrip girls also expect to do well at district in a few different events with the best time in the 400 relay and the fastest time in the 100-meter dash. Amber Johnson has the best showing in the 100 (12.51) and the second best in the 200 (26.40) so far in the 24-5A. She is the only sprinter in the league so far to finish the 100 in under 13 seconds as March winds down and her performance in the 200 is less than a
second off the fastest recorded time in the 200 (25.72). In fact, other than Johnson, the other four fastest times in the 200 are all from Sterling. The Rams actually have two of the fastest girls in the district with Ayana Fletcher currently sporting the fourthbest time in the 100 (13.66). Should Fletcher place fourth in the district, she would not medal but she would advance on to the Area Meet a couple of weeks later with a chance to get to regionals. Both Fletcher and Johnson play important roles in the 4-x100 relay that sports the lowest time (51.26) in the district. Kellee Senegal led off with Lillian Espinosa second followed by Fletcher and Johnson on the anchor leg and they recorded that district-leading time at the Aldine Relays just before spring break. That time is two seconds ahead of Furr, which is second (53.30) and Northside, which is third (54.24). Espinosa also excels in the 400-meter run, where she currently owns the second fastest time (1:02.55) behind a runner from Houston Wisdom (1:01.62). The district meet has its preliminaries races set for Monday, April 2 with the finals scheduled in all events for Thursday, April 5.
Scarborough runners on top pace A couple of Spartans are hoping to come away from the upcoming District 24-4A meet with at least a berth in the Area Round if not a medal or two. Junior Christopher Santos presently owns the third best mark (5:22.22) in the 1,600 and freshman Aldo Garcia is a dual threat in the shot put and the discus. Garcia presently has the second-longest throw in the discus at 87-1, which has him less than four feet behind the first place, which is held by an athlete from North Forest. Garcia is also fourth in the shot put after posting a 30-4 distance at the Houston Relays earlier this month. On the girls side, senior Alonda Vasquez is chasing a district championship in the 1,600-meter run (6:27.98) and that time is 17 seconds faster than the nearest competitor. Fellow senior Claudia Loredo has done well for the Spartans in the 800 and she presently has the third fastest performance in the district (2:55.19).) The leader from Wheatley is the only girl to have run under the 2:50 mark.

Celebrating the women of this community and helping the ones who need it most.
J
oin us on Friday, May 4, from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights as we celebrate the women of our community and the role they play at our homes and our offices. This is the second annual Women @ Work luncheon held by The Leader, and as last year’s attendees can attest, there is no event in the area like this.
About our Charity The Mission of Yahweh is a faith–based shelter that empowers, enriches and restrores the lives of homeless women and children and provides outreach services to low-income communities. Since 1961, The Mission has empowered our clients by providing basic life skills, education, job readiness, and spiritual enrichment. Our primary goal is to help with skills and education so residents can earn a livable wage as a path toward independence and permanent housing. We are able to house 125 women and children and on average 40% of that number are children. Right now, 25% of our residents are Harvey Evacuees.
20% of proceeds will go to the Mission of Yahweh!
About our Luncheon Speaker Susan Jadlowski is the Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. Before being promoted to the role in 2014, she previously served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer. She has guided the hospital to many prestigious honors, including recently receiving Magnet designation, one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can receive for excellence in nursing. Jadlowski and her husband have one daughter and one granddaughter. In their spare time, they enjoy participating in water sports.

The Leader means “community in every sense of the word. I have met many people at our front desk, some who are advertisers and have become friends, some I have known since high school and haven’t seen for 40 years! Our neighbors come by sometimes just to comment on something that we have run in the paper. Even though they may not always agree with us, when they comment we know they are reading us so we must be doing something right! I do know one thing about living in this neighborhood for almost 60 years: neighbors may move away during the course of their lives for various reasons but a really high percentage move back. I think it has something to do with a love for our community.

The Promise of Easter
It is no coincidence that the celebration of Easter takes place each year in early spring, commemorating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For Easter is a celebration of rebirth, and what better time to celebrate this than when the earth is springing back into life. The new life of spring reminds us that this world is eternally productive and creative. The apparent lifelessness of winter is only an illusion. Sleeping just beneath the surface, is life and more life, awaiting GodÕs gentle touch to reawaken it. In the same way, Easter reminds us that the death of our bodies is an illusion. Beneath it is life and more life. The Bible tells us that God so loved the world the He gave us His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. We will one day shed our bodies, as the trees shed their leaves and snakes shed their skins, and we will be reborn into life everlasting. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. New K.J.V. John 10:28
Easter brings New Beginnings Rev. Virginia Wall St. Matthew’s UMC 4300 N. Shepherd One of the holiest days of the Christian faith will be celebrated this year on April Fool’s Day. Yes, it’s not a practical joke or hoax, Easter is on April 1. On the first Easter in 1st century AD, Jesus’ disciples and those who followed the Crucified Savior probably thought it was some kind of cruel joke when his body could not be found. They had taken his battered corpse down from the cross on Good Friday evening and hastily laid Jesus’ body in the new burial tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. Jesus’ followers did not have time to prepare his body for a proper burial with ointments and spices because the beginning of the Sabbath was upon them at sun down. Since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, the task of properly preparing his body for burial had to wait until Sunday. The gospel of John 20:1-29 records the first day events of that first Easter Sunday. Resurrection or Easter Sunday as it is commonly called is about God writing another chapter in the divine salvation plan for humanity. The new chapter emphasizes living in relationship with God through the risen Christ on earth with hope for eternal life beyond earth. So, what is the significance of Easter for humanity today in the midst of our current
events? The significance today is similar to the hope that Jesus’ followers experienced in the first-century. Jesu’ death and resurrection offers believers hope that even though we are experiencing economic hardships, frustration, hopelessness, injustice, violence, oppression, death, and uncertainties in our world today, we can find peace in the midst of our storms, comfort in times of distress, courage and strength in times of hopelessness, and assurance of faith that new beginnings are possible and attainable, as often as we need it, through the resurrected Christ. Every year, we look forward to Easter Sunday and all the excitement it brings. The excitement is great because it is a celebration from death to life and from darkness to light. More specifically, it is about “Resurrection Life.” The new spiritual existence that is given to all who know the power of Jesus Christ’s resurrection (Phil 3:10) and who live in the light of this reality. As we celebrate Easter this year with all of the cultural trimmings of the eggs, candy, and Easter Bunny on April Fool’s Day, let us be encouraged that the day is not a hoax. Keep the focus on Jesus in the midst of the cultural celebration. We can truly experience living in the power of Christ’s Resurrection on earth as we trust God in all things and look forward to new beginnings and the fullness of Resurrection Life in eternity. “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19). He is Risen! Happy Easter!
