It took Heidi and Kevin Walton, both architects, nearly five years to remodel their little ranch house in Oak Forest to perfection. Just as that labor of love wrapped up, though, they fell hard for a mid-century home in Candlelight Estates. “It was a nerdy architect’s dream home,” she recalls of that first sighting. The house was somewhat of an anomaly in the area due to the truly mid-century design, she says. “I think because it was so different, and in need of so much work, most potential buyers couldn’t see what it could be and/or didn’t want to deal with it.” The retro property, on a corner across from Candlelight Park, was designed by M. Arthur Kotch, a prominent Houston architect of the period. The original plans came with the 1965-built home, which still has its mod doors, polished brick floors, window walls, open stairs and a unusual closet with dividers that’s cited in the blueprint as “party chair storage.” (The couple uses the latter for storing artwork not on display.) GOING WITH THE FLOW Still, as floor plans go, the 2,596-sq.-ft. home clearly had entertaining in mind, Walton says. The first floor has several living spaces that open into each other. Meanwhile, a second floor at one end of the house has two bedrooms sharing a play room, so children have their own space - and the adults theirs. This recently became more relevant; the Waltons have become firsttime parents. After purchasing the property a little over a year ago, the couple whipped up a wish list for restoring its ‘60s vibe. They’ve been renovating (and re-remodeling some previous updates) as their funds permit. “We’ve gone at it piecemeal,” she says. “As we’re able to,

we’ll do more.” Early on, they replaced the home’s HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, the roof, any Redwood siding that had rotted, and the double-wide entry door. They added a garage door to the carport to make it a fully functioning garage, polished up the original aluminum windows and refinished the mahoganyveneered built-ins. Fisher foresees vertical trend By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Terry Fisher never forgot where he came from, and that simple fact has been important to his success as one of Houston’s top builders. Fisher, the owner of Heights-based Fisher Homes, grew up in Iowa and worked construction jobs before becoming a homebuilder. Fisher is just as comfortable working on a job site, as he is discussing business with bankers and investors. “I like to frame, I like to pour concrete or hang drywall,” Fisher said. “I’m blessed to be able to do that.” Fisher moved to Houston after the national housing market crash. He lost everything he’d spent years working for and had only $2,500 to his name. Over the past five plus years, Fisher has built a successful company by understanding the market and providing customers with quality homes. He now proudly considers himself a Houstonian and says the city’s transplant population creates friendliness. “People are very endearing to people who have moved here,” Fisher said. Fisher sees the next trend in Inner Loop real estate being condominiums and town homes. See Fisher, P. 2B

Durham strip center being re-purposed By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

A series of businesses at 3017 N. Durham, near Loop 610, will be forced to relocate by April 1 because the property owner, U.S. Builders, has decided to re-purpose the single-level property. A representative from U.S. Builders said they won’t disclose what’s being built there at this time.

The current property contains Computer Wiz, a computer repair center, Murphy’s Deli, Budget Insurance, Boost Mobile phone sales and Pacesetter Personnel Services. Jonathan Lanz, owner of Computer Wiz, said he found a new location on Garden Oaks Blvd. “It’s a larger location, but we’ll miss having a retail presence,” Lanz said.

“People are leaving homes because of land value and tax value, and it’s the catalyst for Houston having to go vertical,” Fisher said. “Many of the greatest cities in the world are condo cities.” Morrison Heights, a 37-unit mid-rise condominium in the Heights, gives professionals with families an opportunity to pay $250,000-$300,000 for a home in a neighborhood where a regular home may cost close to $700,000. “This is an opportunity for people to live in these amazing inner-city neighborhoods that the City of Houston has created through gentrification,” Fisher said. As the hub of the Energy Industry, many professionals often travel and a condo is easier to maintain than a house. The condo is also ideal for empty nesters looking to downsize. In the Oak Forest area, Fisher is building Fisher Estates, which he described as 44 “standalone townhomes” at Oak Forest Dr. and Judiway. The average price of a regular new home in Oak Forest is $731,000, but the town homes will be priced between

$450,000-$500,000. “Residents get the benefit of being by a controlled community where there are great schools and crime is low,” Fisher said.

New home build across from Reagan High By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

The Reagan High School campus will soon have a new neighbor in the residence of 1405 Arlington St., across the street from the school.

The 3,227 square foot home was built by Design Tech Homes, and the architect was Javier Medina or Origin Architects. “It’s a craftsman style house,” Medina said. “The clients had specific things (in

carpet and linoleum found in the study, kitchen and TV room. And the paint palette calmed down from its colorrich scheme. A previous owner had partially upgraded the kitchen. The Waltons opted to gut the space while keeping most of the original cabinets. The former oven tower, for example, is now storage with exposed shelving. The old stovetop made way for a full range with oven. DEFERRED, NOT DETERRED Initial plans to overhaul the master bathroom have been on hold, she says. That leaves the secondary bathroom upstairs, “which is not terribly pressing,” and the upstairs HVAC system, which had been replaced more recently and isn’t used that often. Landscaping is another deferred project. It was cleaned it up a bit early on, but needs to be redone, including the koi pond by the bay window out back. And the fireplace also needs restoration before it can be put to use. “Maybe someday, if we win the lottery, we will also renovate the pool and patio area to bring it more up to date,” Walton quips in a written account of the project. The homeowners’ biggest surprise — so far, at least — was the collapsed sewer pipe they discovered the hard way when they hooked up their washing machine for its first load. They had anticipated sewer line replacement at some point down the line: “With sewer lines (in older homes), it’s ‘when’ not ‘if.” As timing goes, the Waltons wanted to have the heavy lifting, big mess and any chemical processing complete before starting their family. Their

son was born last month. Heidi Walton says patience is imperative when tackling home improvement projects. She admits to being one of those people who wants everything done now. “But often, it’s better to think things through before you jump in and do them. For example, it is driving us crazy that the master bathroom is still not done. However, the fact that it hasn’t has given us time to really think about what we want and also to save up some money. I think this will allow us to actually get the bathroom we really want, and not just one that is done.” They also learned how rewarding sweat equity can be. “I think it makes you value the whole experience more.”’ THAT RENOVATION LIFESTYLE While the Waltons treated living in a construction zone “as an adventure,” living without a kitchen for months in a house full of construction dust “and gross plywood floors” is not ideal, she notes. “Whenever I get frustrated about the progress of things, Kevin is always quick to remind me that this is just the first of many years that we will be here, so there will be plenty of time to get it all done. Their being in the construction and design industry brought them access to amazing subcontractors, she adds. “We really would not have been able to do this without their help.” Meanwhile, the long-delayed master bathroom overhaul apparently has become a more pressing project, she reports: “I was taking a bath yesterday, and when I let the water drain, it started coming out the wall. It drained all over the bathroom floor.”

the house has an open concept, but they tried to conform with the rest of the neighborhood on the outside. “The porch goes from side to side - it’s a welcoming environment,” Medina said.

The Scarborough High boys soccer team is ready for an encore performance. The Spartans (10-3-1) reached the third round of the UIL Class 4A playoffs, and they’ll try to duplicate that success when they face Fort Bend Willowridge in the first round of the playoffs next week. “I think we’re going to have to elevate our game,” Scarborough first-year head coach Jeff Keese said. “We’ll have better competition in the playoffs.” Scarborough finished third in its district behind Furr and Wheatley, respectively. The team graduated several seniors from last season’s team, in which it lost to Fort Bend Ridge Point in the third round. But senior goalkeeper Eric Castillo, who recorded shutouts in the first two playoff games, is one of about a half-dozen players who contributed on last year’s team. “We could make a run if we want to,” Castillo said. “Every-

one has to put in the effort. We know who we’re going to face and how the playoffs can be.” The Spartans have six seniors and start three freshmen, with a good mix of juniors and sophomores. Senior Victor Roa and freshmen Emilio Carrizales have been team leaders, and junior Brian Estrada is leading the team in goals. They competed in the Port

Neches-Groves Tournament earlier in the season. Even though they didn’t win a game, the experience made them ready for a playoff-type atmosphere. “We have good young players who put a lot of effort into continually improving, said Keese, who was an assistant at Magnolia High last season. The Scarborough girls are back in the playoffs, with first-

Reagan Boys to meet Friendswood

The Reagan High boys soccer team defeated Austin High, 2-1, in a tiebreaker game to qualify for the Class 4A playoffs. The Bulldogs will meet perennial power Friendswood in the first round, in a rematch of last season’s playoff opener. Reagan led the Mustangs 1-0 with three minutes left in last year’s game but lost 2-1 in double overtime. “We feel like we’re a better team now,” Bulldogs coach Robert Rivas said.

Waltrip alum returned to national tournament By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Sean Edwards spent most of his freshman season on the University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team’s bench. But it didn’t bother him at all. The 2012 Waltrip High graduate learned as much as he could from then-senior guard Travis Lampley, a 2009 Reagan High alum and one of the top point guards in the Red River Athletic Conference. “He played behind the #1 assist guard in the country at any level in Travis Lampley,” UST head coach Todd Smith said. “Sean had an opportunity to play against him every single PMday last year. He couldn’t help

but get better. Nobody plays harder than Sean on a daily basis.” Edwards’ apprenticeship has paid off, as he started every game for the Celts, who reached the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. They lost to Emmanuel College, 74-62, in the first round on Wednesday. “Travis was a good teacher as far as how to run the team and be able to help my teammates with what to do,” Edwards said. An Accounting/Finance major at UST, said his experience playing at Waltrip helped him become the player he has today. Edwards is capable of playing point guard or shooting guard, according to Smith.

Neighbors: Fite celebrates 92nd birthday By Elizabeth Villareal elizasgarden@outlook.com

Happy, happy birthday to Dan Fite who celebrated his 92nd birthday on March 14. Mr. Fite is our neighbor over in the Irvington Addition three miles from the Heights in North side on what was once a large plot of family land. Born on March 14, 1922, and named after St. Patrick in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Dan grew up in the Heights on Nicholson St. and attended Reagan High School, graduating in 1939. As a young man, Dan built his own home on the Irvington Addition property with the help of his father who owned half of the street. Although most of the land is no longer in the family, Dan still lives in the house he built for his own family. He joined the Coast Guard in October of 1942 for the duration of the war and was honorably discharged in 1945. He became an electrician in 1939 and retired at the age of 65. He has been a member of IBEW 716 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for over 65 years. He was married to Edith Burnett for 56 years and had two children, Daniel Lee and Dr. Kathy Fite, who has been a professor on the faculty at Texas State University for 40 years. Dan is a busy and active fellow who has been exercising for three years in the Silver Sneakers class at the Harriet and Joe Foster YMCA on 34th

Street. I was told that Dan has been an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life and enjoys telling hunting and fishing stories. Friends and family celebrated with Dan after the Silver Sneakers class on March 14, enjoying cupcakes and candy. Dan’s daughter Kathy said, “He is a great testimony to seniors exercising. He just got out of a month long hospitalization for an infection. He went immediately back to the YMCA. He loves it there!” Frank Black Middle School is excited about its third place win in the districtsponsored Name that Book competition. Principal Meilin Jao said, “I am so excited for both our students and our sponsor!” Schools participating in the competition were Briarmeadow Academy, Energized for Excellence, Energized for STEM, Grady Middle School, Johnston Middle School, Pin Oak Middle School, and T.H. Rogers Middle School. With a group comprised of one eighth grader, three seventh graders, two sixth graders and an alternate, FM Black’s team went to the semi-finals and placed second while Johnston MS was in first place. On the last day of the competition, FM Black’s team went to the finals where they were placed in a sudden death match against Johnston and won third place. On that day, Pin Oak won first place and TH Rogers won second place. Jao said, “The team is so ex-

cited that we can’t wait to get the reading list as soon as it comes out in May. This is the second year that we have competed in seven years. Last year, we did not make it to the finals.” Everyone had better look out for FM Black’s team next year. Go Panthers!

Our community is just popping with new businesses and energized neighbors hoping to make a difference. The brand new Oaks Business Association held its first general meeting on March 11 at St. James Lutheran Church with nearly 50 people attending. Topics included the creation of a board, nomination of board members, creation of by laws, community involvement goals and plans, and refining the mission for the organization. The Oaks Business Association logo and tag line were unveiled. The first networking event of the OBA was held last month at Plonk! and was very well attended with local business owners meeting and mingling. Business owners, businesses and community members in the Oak Forest and Garden Oaks area (including Mangum Manor, Lazybrook, Timbergrove, Shepherd Park Plaza, Candlelight, Shepherd Forest and more) are welcome to become a part of the group and attend meetings and networking events. Please “like” The Oaks Business Association Facebook page for more details.

Art a la Carte: 10 Years of awesome I kicked it around for six months, “what can we do special to celebrate 10 years?: One day, while sitting with Public House Heights co-owner Emily McReavy, I asked her if I could hang art on the walls of her pub. Many artists have been showcased since opening about two and half years ago. I did not expect the resounding yes to come so quickly! To answer the question then, to Mitch Cohen celebrate a 10 year Arts Columnist outdoor art show, we’re going to celebrate indoors. This is the first event of its kind for us, I hope you will join us. The artists are all listed on the website, www. firstsaturdayartsmarket.com. Thursday, March 20 10 Years of Awesome! An Art Salon, 6-9 p.m. Public House Heights, 2802 White Oak, Suite 100, 77007. For the first time in 10 Years, First Saturday Arts Market artists take their art indoors for a show and anniversary celebration. Friday March 21 You Can’t See the Forest For the Trees, 7-10 p.m. JoMar Visions, 902 Hardy Street 77002. The world of trees

depicted and explored by three phenomenal local artists, Linda Hardy, Deborah Hill and MV Poffenberger. There’s one thing Houston artists seem to have in common, working too hard, entering too many shows and stressing themselves out. The phrase “You Can’t See the Forest For the Trees” came up in conversation with these 3 ladies and what do they do? Yep, created an art show by the same name and stressed out more. View the fruit of their cumulative stress at this event featuring perhaps the calmest, stress free living thing on our planet, trees. Saturday, March 22 Watershed Market, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Watershed Market 2322 Polk St., 77003. I know what you’re thinking, “another market?” Yep — I’ve been hearing a lot about this one and can’t wait to check it out. This is from the official press release: Houston’s new urban marketplace, showcasing various local food and drink purveyors, artists, designers and innovators, is presenting its grand opening event “Urban Elements: Sights, Sounds and Flavors In EAst DOwntown Houston,” on March 22 and 23, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at 2322 Polk St., in the East Downtown District (EaDo). Watershed Market is a free event providing a family-friendly destination in a festive atmosphere while bringing attention to products and services focusing on innovation, education and

sustainability. Creation or Evolution— The Artists Journey An Artists Invitational, 5:308:30 p.m., Museum District Eye Center, 4704 Montrose Blvd. 77006. Nine artists will be showing a body of work spanning 10 to 20 years — Featuring Arthur Turner, Courtesy Moody Gallery, Patrick Michael Palmer, Peihong Endris, Ken Mazzu, Ellen Orseck, Claire Ankenman, Heather Westendarp, Antje Reitsch and Carolyn C. Garcia. Carolyn Garcia Gallery shows artwork of established and emerging artists. The Gallery hosts quarterly exhibits and artists receptions with a portion of the sales proceeds to benefit local charities. I met Carolyn Garcia while delivering plants for Buchanan’s Native Plants last summer and naturally, art came up in our short conversation. I love art in “other” spaces and am excited to introduce you to the Carolyn Garcia Gallery, located in her husband’s ophthalmology office. Platinum, 6-9 p.m., Gallery 3, 2101 Winter St. C3 Opening in conjunction with Fotofest. The Gallery 3 space at Winter Street Studios is run by artist Terry LeavittChavez, and it may be one of the largest spaces there. It is certainly fun to visit, the artists are always there to greet you and offer a beverage. The space doubles as a working studio for a few artists and Leavitt-Chavez. They are of course open on the second Saturday and by appointment by calling 713-501-0008.
