When Shirley Brown experienced chest pain, she knew she was suffering a heart attack. A long-time heart patient, she had undergone triple bypass surgery 11 years earlier and, since then, received several new heart stents. “Normally one nitroglycerin spray relieves my chest pain, but I took three sprays over 25 minutes and was still in pain,” says Brown. “So I called 911.” Brown was transported to Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, an Accredited Chest Pain Center, a designation of the Society of Chest Pain that is held by less than 400 U.S. hospitals. This accreditation means the hospital delivers a higher level of expertise when caring for patients who arrive at its Emergency Center with symptoms of a heart attack. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights consistently achieves the national gold standard of 90 minutes or less door-to-balloon (D2B) time between each patient’s arrival and undergoing balloon angioplasty to open blocked arteries.

Coordinated Heart Team Delivers Expert Care The chest pain program at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights emphasizes the importance of proven diagnostic and treatment protocols. These best practices provide more efficient and effective patient evaluation, as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of their chest pain and other heart attack systems. “We monitor patients from the time EMS reaches them,” says Seena John, coordinator of the hospital’s chest pain program. “This enables us to treat them more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of their heart muscle can be preserved.” “Everyone in our chest pain pro-

gram has a role, and they’re living up to it, while also trying to improve D2B times,” says Paresh Patel, M.D., an affiliated physician who is boardcertified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. “Based on the EKG results at the patient’s location, we can activate our heart catheterization lab and make sure our heart team knows the patient’s history before arrival at the hospital.” In Brown’s case, EMS confirmed she was having a heart attack. Upon arrival at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, she immediately underwent angioplasty to open her blocked artery and a stent was placed. Brown admits to having been complacent about taking her blood

SJMC to host 4th Annual Heart Health Luncheon For The Leader

Even with the Affordable Care Act in full swing, Texas continues to lead the nation in uninsured citizens. While the number of Texans without health insurance dropped last year to 19 percent – from 22 percent in 2013 – we still hold the dubious distinction of Number 50. What do those Texans do for healthcare? The Harris Health System often fills the need, and then some. A good example is Allan McDougle. When this Heights resident wanted

treatment for an earache, a terrible sore throat, and to get his winter flu shot, he discovered that it would cost more than he wanted to spend at the walk-in clinic nearest to his home. McDougle was smart – he tracked down one of Harris Health System’s same-day centers, the Sunset Heights Clinic. Harris Health System is a nonprofit agency operated by Harris County with the mission to keep its citizens safe and healthy. Now celebrating the Sunset Heights Clinic’s third anniversary, HHS operates six same-day clinics in Harris See Sunset P. 2B

The Women of Wellness (WOW) Program at St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) will celebrate the American Heart Association’s Heart Health Month with a health fair, partner expo and luncheon on Friday, Feb. 17. WOW is a health and social program to empower women as healthcare consumers by providing educational information and hosting fun, inspiring events that celebrate women’s roles in their own wellness. Titled “Tune Up Your Heart: Maintaining the Engine of Life,” the luncheon presentation features keynote speaker Jon-Cecil Walkes, M.D., a cardiothoracic surgeon and medical director of cardiovascular surgery at St. Joseph Medical Center. He will discuss controlling risk factors to prevent illness and death from coronary artery disease and how to recognize the signs of stoke. “Cardiovascular disease is the nation’s number one killer Dr. Jon-Cecil Walkes of both men and women,” said Dr. Walkes. “Most people don’t realize that one in four women die of heart disease, yet there are ways to control the illness.” Tickets for the luncheon cost $10 and attendees are encouraged to wear red. Proceeds benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women® campaign. The event takes place at the SJMC George W. Strake Building, 9th floor auditorium, at 1919 LaBranch Street. Complimentary valet parking is available at 1401 St. Joseph Parkway or attendees can self-park in the West Garage located at 1310 St. Joseph Parkway. The health fair and partner expo begins at 11 a.m. with the lunch and program at noon. For tickets and additional information on the luncheon, visit sjmctx.com/wow or call 713-756-5051.

thinner medication, which resulted in blood clogging one of her stents. Dr. Patel counseled the 66-year-old on the importance of her medications. “Dr. Patel and I had a good talk and I understand I must keep my doctor appointments and take my medicine,” says Brown. “I also appreciated the helpful heart education materials provided by a nurse. Memorial Hermann has always made me feel important.” To help Brown and other heart patients with their care, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights offers a monthly support group called Mended Hearts. The group meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the hospital. Their next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 14.

Sunset from P. 1B County. “I went to a drugstore walkin clinic, but the price for tests, a shot, and treatment would have been more than $200,” McDougle stated. “I knew there had to be a more affordable service. Then I found the Sunset Heights Clinic.” McDougle spent 20 minutes with a medical professional who tested him for high blood pressure, strep throat, flu, and diabetes, then wrote several prescriptions, and gave him a flu vaccine. The visit cost him $95. “I know it sounds strange, but I felt better almost right away,” McDougle stated. Located at 1623 Airline Drive, the clinic’s facility includes a spotless, 4,671square-foot building with eight exam rooms and two treatment rooms. It serves infants from 18 months old, to seniors. It is open 8 am. to 8 pm. ev-

ery day but Sunday. The hours help make healthcare available to school-aged children and working adults. While vaccines are available, that service is only one part of the effort. The clinic’s boardcertified professionals also provide treatment for minor injuries including those requiring sutures, as well as treatment for common illnesses, allergies and other health issues. “We are here to serve the public,” stated Jeffery Nwabeke, Senior Operations Manager for all six of the HHS’s same-day clinics. “The cost for a visit is a flat $95 and that includes treatments, shots, written prescriptions if necessary, and we have a small laboratory, so we can do lab work. It’s a real value. Many of our patients would wind up in an expensive emergency room if we weren’t here.”

If you are thinking that the affordable price must be a trade-off for a three-hour wait to be seen, think again. “There is no need for an appointment; walk-ins are welcomed,” Nwabeke continued. “We see most of our patients in 15 to 30 minutes of arrival, sometimes far less. It is a rewarding experience for us. We seek feedback from our patients and it is always wonderful to discover that they appreciate us. We know we are making a difference in the lives of local families.” The Sunset Heights Clinic accepts many insurance plans including Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP. In fact, this clinic treats more children than any other HHS same-day clinic. For more information go to harrishealth. org.

J

February 25, 1925 - February 4, 2017

ames Clarence Low Howard, Jr., beloved husband, father, and granddad, passed into the arms of our Lord on February 4, 2017. James was born in Milford, Texas on February 25,1925, to James Clarence Low Howard and Millie Idell Frederick Howard. James joined the Navy in 1943 where he achieved the rank of Aviation Radio Man, 2nd Class, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He married the love of his life, Annie, in 1944, and lived in Corpus Christi until his tenure in the Navy ended in 1946. James enjoyed sports as a student at Milford High School, where he was a star quarterback; and in college at North Texas Agricultural College and A&M at Bryan-College Station where he played running back, and was affectionately known as “James Steamboat Howard”. He and Annie enjoyed watching the Houston Astros and Houston Texans games together. After two children, in 1949 he hung up his cleats and became an employee of Gulf States Utilities. In 1951 he joined Magnolia Petroleum Company, later known as Mobil Oil Company. In 1962, James started his own business as an investor and Real Estate Broker. He was active in this business until December 2014 when he suffered a stroke. Survivors include his daughters Betty Shugart (Robert), Linda Bolton (Mac); sons Billy Howard (Connie), Jim Howard (Diana), and Paul Howard (Sheri); 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. James, also known as Jim and James Jr., was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie Louise O’Connor Howard, who was laid to rest on February 4, 2017; his parents; and two sisters, Jimidel Louise Howard Spring and Mari Elizabeth Howard Wood. Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home of Waxahachie, Texas arranged the grave side service held on February 5, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. Mr. Walter Buchanan officiated the service. Granddaughter, Tiffany Batchelor, read a prayer written by James on February 24,1980. Marcus Howard sang James favorite hymn, How Great Thou Art. Interment followed at the Milford Cemetery. A memorial celebrating the life of James will be held at a later date in Houston, Texas. Tributes may be made to a charity of your choice.

High-speed train reaches milestone in on-land option program For The Leader Texas Central, developers of the state’s high-speed train, announced today that it has marked a significant milestone in its land option program, the result of collaborative and ongoing engagements with property owners and stakeholders along the project’s potential route. The company said it has reached option agreements on about 30 percent of the parcels estimated to be needed for the bullet train’s route in the 10-county stretch between North Texas and Houston. Negotiations have resulted in option agreements in all 10 counties, including 50 percent of the parcels for the proposed route in Waller and Grimes counties. Grimes County is the site of a Brazos Valley passenger station, a midway stop on the 240-mile line between the state’s top metro areas. Texas Central’s option program compensates owners today in exchange for the right to acquire a parcel at a future date at an agreed price. The option offers are being made in select areas of alignments that are under review as part of the project’s environmental assessment. To date, options have been negotiated representing about 30 percent of the parcels estimated for the potential route. “This is a significant step in the progress of the high-speed train and it reflects the positive dialogue we have had with landowners along the route,” said Texas Central CEO Carlos Aguilar. “Texans see the many benefits of a system that will provide a safe, reliable and productive alternative to the state’s transportation demands.” Since the beginning of the project, Texas Central has pledged to engage in personalized, open and collaborative discussions with landowners,

listening to concerns, outlining the project’s benefits and answering questions. Texas Central so far has hosted 28 information meetings throughout the 10 counties, allowing for additional individual conversations with project managers and subject matter experts. In those few cases in which Texas Central sought a court decision to allow survey access, conversations with landowners later resulted in a favorable resolution reached out of court in a majority of these instances. Because of the positive collaboration with Texans along the route and the progress of the environmental assessment, Texas Central has withdrawn the remaining 17 cases to allow it to work with all landowners on an amicable approach for permission to survey. The Texas bullet train continues to progress every day with action on many fronts, including infrastructure engineering design, development of world-leading safety practices and rules, design of the interior of the trains, best practices for the customer/ rider experience, minimizing environmental impact and much more. “Earlier today, Texas Central, the group developing the state’s high-speed train, announced several critical milestones for this exciting project,” Texas Railroad Advocates said in a statement. “The announcement of land agreements in Waller and Grimes counties are particularly laudable considering the intensity of the campaign of misinformation aimed at the residents of those communities. Texas Rail Advocates will continue to support open, honest dialogue as our state moves toward a future that includes the option of high-speed train service for business and vacation travelers.”

Dear Planning for the Worst, One of the cruel realities of pet ownership is that we know-from the beginning--that we’ll very likely outlive our pet, but (thankfully) we chose to love and share our lives with pets anyway. The joy that they bring us greatly outweighs the sadness of watching them grow old and die. As your pet ages, it is important to consult your veterinarian for help providing the proper care for your senior pet’s changing needs. Every animal is different, so the senior life stage occurs at different ages in different pets. For instance, dogs are typically

taking care of themselves. Despite this change in mobility and physical activity, it is important to keep your dog and cat active to slow the progression of joint pain and arthritis. In addition, a healthy diet that adequately nourishes your pet is also key in reducing your pet’s risk for obesity, which can also contribute to joint pain. “The single most important aspect in helping your pet stay as happy and healthy for as long as possible is maintaining a healthy weight throughout their lifetime,” Eckman said. “A healthy weight should be coupled with regular exercise and activity.” Perhaps the hardest part about having an aging furry best friend is accepting when they are no longer happy in everyday life. It is never easy to let go of a pet, but in some cases, euthanasia is the most humane option. “Making the decision to euthanize a pet is a personal and difficult decision,” Eckman said. “The decision is dependent on what signs and symptoms the pet is showing or what disorder the pet is experiencing. When owners are questioning if they should euthanize their pet, they should discuss it with their veterinarian to help guide the decision-making process.” As much as we would love our pets to live forever, they grow old and need special care. To ensure your pet lives a long, healthy life, be sure to visit your veterinarian regularly. Do you have a question for Tabby? Email her at deartabbyquestions@ gmail.com

Dear Tabby, Just in the past year, it seems as though my 12 year old dog has gotten really old. She’s still eating well, but some of her old “spunk” is missing and some days she doesn’t feel well at all. How will I know when the time has come to start considering the end of her life? Planning for the worst in Woodland Heights

considered seniors at seven years old, but older dogs age quicker than smaller dogs. Cats can be considered mature at seven years and seniors at 11 years old. Breed and species aside, your pet’s genetics, nutrition, health, and environment will ultimately determine when your pet is considered a senior. One of the telltale signs of increasing age in pets is a decline in physical activity. For instance, previously active pets may not play as much and both dogs and cats may need assistance climbing on and off the bed or couch. In addition to a decrease in physical activity, older cats and dogs tend to develop more degenerative health problems. “Chronic degenerative disorders like heart and kidney disease are common in older pets, and so is cancer,” Dr. Stacy Eckman, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences said. “In cats, kidney, heart, and thyroid disease are the most common aging conditions. In dogs, different breeds are more prone to certain conditions. For example, some breeds are more likely to see a dramatic increase in cancers as they age.” A visit to the veterinarian every six months can help determine what is normal for your pet so that any changes in behavior or health can be detected early. Aging cats and dogs are also prone to arthritis, dental disease, loss of sight and hearing, and a decrease in mobility. Just like humans, pets may need more assistance getting around and

Elite youth baseball team rising fast in Independence Heights managed to go 49-11-1 in just their first full baseball season after coming together less than a year before. The Crush entered this year with a few new faces, in a new division, 10U Elite, and with a revamped practice field in Independence Heights, which was something that was hard to come by in the earlier days. “We have six original members from our team last year, and we’ve got a little bit of a different team, but we’re hoping that we can replicate the success of last year, Rollans said. While the achievements that the team has been able to rack up have been nice, Rollans said that finding a home for the ball club and being welcomed by the community has been a much larger feat. “A bigger accomplishment really was being accepted into that neighborhood in that area and having them look at us as a source of pride for the neighborhood, he said. “Independence Heights and the Independence Heights redevelopment district, they really embraced us and took us in and made us one of their own. To find out how the Crush made Independence Heights their home and what they are doing to help renovate the area check out next week’s issue.

By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader When Rob Rollans helped create the Houston Crush youth baseball team in July 2015, he wanted to give innercity kids, many of whom are underpriviledged, an opportunity to play the game that they loved at an elite level without having to travel to the suburbs to do so. “To be on a good team, you had to go to Katy or Spring or Pearland or wherever, Rollans said. “We knew we had some good players inside the loop and in (Independence Heights), so we put a team together. The Crush started with just four players, including Rollans’ son Ethan, but they quickly strung together a nine-man roster and were playing games by late September. It took a mere four months for the team to become a cohesive unit, and the Crush and its coaches began to recognize their potential. “In January of last year, we traveled to Beaumont and were in a tournament and were undefeated throughout the whole tournament going into the finals and then we lost to some gigantic team from Louisiana, a really good team, Rollans said. “Then we realized, ‘wow, these boys are pretty good.’ After that second-place finish, the team went on to win its

next tournament, and before long, they started rising up through the Texas ranks and continued adding to the win column. By June, the Crush were on the list of teams to beat in the Houston area, and by extension, the country, as they persisted to build a reputation in the nine-and-under select baseball world. “Houston is one of the best baseball cities in the country by far, Rollans said. “If you look at the nationally ranked teams in the top 20, four, five, six or seven may be from Houston. In fact, that spring, seven of the top 20 teams actually were from the Houston area, including the Crush at No. 15, ac-

cording to Nations Baseball. With their freshly minted image as one of the premiere teams in the state, the ball club traveled to Spring to compete in the Texas South Zone State Tournament in mid-June where they crushed all five of their opponents, outscoring them by 28 combined runs on their way to the state title. The team was then invited to compete in the Mid-South 9, 10 World Series where they were one of the favorites to win it all. Despite being favored, the Crush finished the tournament 2-3-1 and fell short of an even bigger title. Although the shortcoming was tough for the team, they

THE LEADER.

Put your paws together for Jasmine and Leonardo By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com The votes have been tallied and Leader area pet lovers have spoken – Jasmine the dog and Leonardo the cat and came out on top, even though their owners have long been convinced of their importance. For third grader Isabella Sterr it was love at first sight in November of 2004 when she accompanied her dad and brother to a soccer game on a wet, cold day and discovered Jasmine abandoned under the playground. “Jasmine found Isabella, said her mom Heather Sterr, who noted that brother Vincent got the naming rights. Jasmine settled in nicely to her new home. She discovered that she really liked Beggin’ Strips. The Sterrs learned that Jasmine was great at fetch. While both her fur sisters passed away last year, Jasmine is friendly and gets along with animals and people. When Isabella learned about The Leader contest, she went to the offices to enter her pooch in person. Heather

said that Isabella campaigned to her family, schoolmates and fencing partners to garner online votes. When Isabella learned that Jasmine had won, she gave credit where credit was due. “She was excited for her dog, not for herself, said Heather. Heather also says that Isabella is ready to add to their brood – “She would like to rescue a dog named Rose from Friends for Life so Jasmine can have a new sister. Feline Leonardo came from Friends for Life back in 2010, so it’s fitting he won since the rescue group is the beneficiary of The Leader’s contest this year. Karen Imas remembers when she and husband Walter Baker found their forever cat. “When my husband and I walked into Friends for Life Leo came right up to us in his cage, said Imas. “We went in to check out his brother, Davinci, and we fell in love with Leo right away. We decided to keep his name and add his brother’s name as his middle name. Watching Leo and his brother play in Friends for

Life, we noticed Leo letting his brother beat him up. I said to my husband, ‘Walter, look how calm he is! That’s the one for us.’ And that was it. He’s the best decision we ever made with adopting a pet. Leonardo was living the high life long before the Leader contest, snacking on salmon cat treats and yogurt and generally being chill. When he’s not listening to music and looking out the windows, he’s playing fetch with pipe cleaners in the shape of a circle or hair bands. “Leonardo is the most calm creature you will ever meet in your life, said Imas. “Sometimes I think he thinks he’s a dog because his demeanor is similar to a calm dog. He’s super friendly and loves to hang out for hours. He loves company whenever we have it. He’s not a ‘run away and hide’ type of cat. After Imas entered him in the contest, she put his picture on the Friends for Life Facebook page to help him get votes. The win was sweet all around, although Leonardo remains humble in victory. “We’re high school teachers and winning anything for my husband and I is an honor, said Imas. “We love Leonardo like he is our child. He means the world to us. In addition to the top vote getters there were also two photo judge winners, which were determined by judges at Friends for Life. Judges liked the looks of two pets in par-

ticular – Wolfie the dog owned by Jennie Rexer and Libby the cat, who belongs to Leslie Rogers. Prizes for the winners include treats for humans and pets. Eateries Ginger and Fork, 3 Brothers Bakery, and Olive Garden on 290 donated gift cards, as did pet connected businesses Paws Pet Resort, Polka Dot Dogs, Scoop Le Poop, Yuppie Dog, The Purple Cat Resale, Kriser’s Pet Store and C&D Hardware.

Healthy Pets Visit Vets

n recent years there has been a significant reduction in pet visits to veterinarians despite an increase in pet populations. Data shows common and preventable diseases in pets have been increasing. This shift from preventative care to reactive care typically costs more if pets are to stay healthy or alive. One driving force behind this trend, besides the recession, is dependence on the Internet. Pet owners often look online first if their pet is ill. This delay means pets are far worse off when they finally get to the vet, therefore costs are much greater, some cannot be saved and euthanasia rates are up significantly. Although reliable Internet sites can provide knowledge they can not deliver know-how, experience or action for quick and proper treatment. Soon, it will be puppy parvovirus season again. Thousands of the cutest puppies will die needlessly as they do every spring. This killer disease is easily prevented with basic vaccines. With increasing mosquitoes, thousands of cats and dogs will acquire heartworms despite available prescription preventatives. All pets deserve at least an annual veterinary exam and consultation on their individual basic health care needs. To understand optimal preventative healthcare for your pet visit: www.pethealthpartnership.org. If your pet is ill, do not delay. Make an appointment and then research online.
