Viula Torgerson has been promoting local businesses through her blog – The Heights Life – for almost ten years because she believes that they are what give character to any neighborhood.

“Small, local shops and eateries are what attracted us to the Heights over a decade ago,” she said. “At a local shop, you can get to know the owner and build relationships which strengthen the fabric of the community. The better question is why wouldn’t anyone support small and local businesses?”

As it turns out, Torgerson has a lot of company. Beth Williams loves the customer service she’s gotten from Branché, which recently moved into a new home at Revive’s Ella Oaks on Ella and

“I’ve texted the owner before about something I need to complete an outfit and she will even pull some things to try,” she said.

“They are the opposite of pressure sales. They want you to love it and feel great in it – otherwise,

it’s not a good buy.”

bring quality items conveniently to our area and those items have brought us lifelong friends already,” said Buss. “While making sales is a plus, of course, being able to interact with people from the neighborhood is my personal favorite part.”

“This type of support has also made us more conscious of keeping it local, because we’re all in this together,” echoed coowner Emily Moore.

Shawn Salyers, who purchased MytiBurger in 2012, says that owning a restaurant with a 51 year history means a lot.

“We know that to maintain that relationship, we have to continue to provide excellent quality and service to our customers, but with all the new competition moving in, we also have to remind our customers that our brand is still here and still part of our community,” said Salyers.

Some are so grateful for the support that they look for ways to pay it forward.

“I’ve served this area for fifteen years and totally stand behind the neighbor-supported business support,” said Alison Spencer. “My law practice is 100 percent referral only. This is why I recently opened an Art Gallery in the area as my gift back. I do not make any profit off the proceeds, it goes directly to the area artists.”

Susan Kostelecky said that as a small business owner, she wants to support other local businesses, many of whom also support area events and school fundraisers.

“When I began doing some major landscaping a few years ago, I frequented – and still do – Wabash Feed, Buchanan’s and Joshua’s Native plants for all of my purchases,” she said. “I know I can get personalized service and attention, and my purchases are benefiting area business owners and their families.”

For some, supporting local has more to do with small business versus big business/chain stores.

“Of course I’m going to support a great restaurant that happens to be close by,” said Andrea Catalano. “But I will also go out of my way to support an independent bookstore if I’m able, or drive to Southwest Houston

“I buy directly from [farmers] or at the various farmer’s markets,” said Cyrus Nasr. “I know where my meat and veggies come from. Much healthier that way too.”

Jenna Taylor and her husband are both entrepreneurs, who were raised by entrepreneurs too.

“To our family, supporting local means helping others provide dance, art and karate les-

sons to their kids; adding funds to mortgage and rent payments; and supporting the dreams, hopes, health and futures of our neighbors,” she said. “Basically, supporting local is about being a friend to everyone you meet and trying to leave a place, a neighborhood, better than you found it. Our neighborhood is so special because of generations of others who have done the same before us.”

It’s not your father’s neighborhood – but that’s alright

It could be something as simple as a song melody, or the smell of the perfect burger; the sight of the old schoolyard or a landmark commemorating what’s come before.

Any of these things can bring flashbacks to the days of old, while simultaneously offering glimpses of what’s to come.

From Garden Oaks and Oak Forest to Shepherd Park Plaza, and from the Heights to Timbergrove and Lazybrook, every Leader neighborhood has undergone massive shifts in culture, demographics, and more – and it’s been quite the sight for some longtime residents.

“I’ve lived around here my whole life – went Black, Waltrip, Garden Oaks Elementary, St. Ambrose, Stevens Elementary. I’m an actual, native Oak Forest person – not sure how

many of those there are left,” said former Oak Forest and now Shepherd Park Plaza resident Randy Klander, whose parents built his current home near 43rd and Rosslyn in 1962. “I remember being in Oak Forest when the buildings over in Shepherd Park Plaza were being built; when we moved over there it was only Chamboard and Curtin Street. I watched them build all those streets; I remember them building Candlelight Plaza and seeing all this new growth come in with everything.”

After a brief stagnation period, Klander said change has been getting re-energized again as time passes.

“The streets have widened, we’ve got all these new shopping centers coming in,” he said. “I remember going to Black and how big a place I thought that was. Things get smaller with time, then you

go back and realize it doesn’t look so big. I’ve enjoyed the area for a long time, and I’ve literally seen it built. I’ve roamed this area my whole life.”

And it’s not just commercial change. Lazybrook resident Sherri Sera has noted a distinct shift in home building throughout the neighborhood – especially on her particular block – as many of the areas have become Houston’s most burgeoning spots.

“When I first moved in, I was one of the few that was new to the block – a high percentage of folks had built those homes in the late 50s and early 60s,” said Sera, who has lived in Lazybrook for 21 years. “Now I’m one of the only ones left on my street who is an original homeowner – a lot of those homes have turned over at least a couple of times in the last 20 years.”

Both Sera and Klander

noted a love of the expanded dining options brought on by developments such as numerous options in the Washington Corridor not far from their own backyards.

“I think that’s been great for the area,” Sera said. “Washington used to be kind of scary, and not a street you wanted to be on after dark 2025 years ago. Now, it’s vibrant with apartment buildings, nice restaurants.”

And in Klander’s eyes, developments such as 33 1/3 @ Thirtyfourth have been much needed, and will continue to be as such – though he said the old reliables still hold their charm.

“I love these changes, and I think we even need a little more of what we have – we ‘ve got so many people moving back to the area. Me and my wife are looking for some new solutions to dinner time...I’m really a big fan of

the new stuff coming in these days, but I still also love a lot of the old standbys,” he said.

However, both are not without nostalgia for places such as the Mobil Station on West 18th and Ella – which has stayed around since Sera moved to Houston more than 20 years ago.

“When everything around you is changing, it’s nice to have a little continuity, and you want to support familyowned people in the neighborhood. They’ve always done right by me,” Sera said.

For Klander, that nostalgia for the old days is accompanied by just a touch of longing. Memories like riding a ‘51 Pontiac through the neighborhood; MytiBurger as a drivein complete with carhops ; of when 43rd Street was a twolane street, and the bridge over White Oak Bayou was a two-lane wooden bridge run through his mind as though

they occurred yesterday.

He still remembers the old Western Auto on 43rd, along with a old-time diner with a soda fountain and grill like at the old drugs stores. And right across the street – where a Kroger now sits – there used to be a Weingarten. It all comes rushing back in a blink. Though, the feeling of traversing the neighborhood he knows so well and seeing what it’s become usually dashes that feeling. And it just feels right, evolution and all “I still like driving around and seeing the old stuff while simultaneously seeing all that’s new. I remember the way things are, but I love seeing the way things are,” he said. “After visting other places, I could do a whole lot worse than this area here – I love it so much. I wouldn’t have it any other way, because I’ve evolved with it.”

Little Free Libraries cultivate love of learning

From Oak Forest resident Glen Pangle – who created the neighborhood’s first Little Free Library – to locations in the 1400 block of Candlelight Lane, 1000 block of Althea, 1300 block of Du Barry and more, Little Free Libraries have been taking the neighborhood by storm over the last several years as the community forges a connnection to further the love of learning.

Little Free Libraries are a spot for neighbors to take a book, drop a few off, and/ or return the one borrowed, and are popping up all over the United States as well as local neighborhoods. These creative, waterproof book stands are all part of a “Take a book, return a book” worldwide movement with the goal of helping neighborhoods build a sense of community.

Plans for building the little libraries are available online, you can buy one already built, or you can create one using your imagination.

For Oak Forest resident Ginny Ledwell, the inspiration stemmed from simple roots – her mother was a music teacher for 36 years; her grandmother taught English for 20. Meanwhile, her father

was on the school board in the family’s hometown while Ledwell was an English/ Spanish major taught school for ten years before deciding to become a Realtor.

“I guess you could say education runs through my blood,” she said. “I also know from years in the classroom that literacy and access to books is a key component in becoming a life-long learner, and that the more books a child has, the more the love of learning will grow.”

So, Ledwell and her family have created a space in front of their home in the

4000 block of Alba Road with a comfortable bench, a hammock, and the LFL as well as a place for people to leash up their dogs and a dog treat bin. And since the home is in a busy location on the way to the many restaurants and bars on Wakefield, it has become a frequent stopping point for anyone strolling down Alba. It’s not uncommon to see kids of all ages and adults hanging out perusing the selection.

“We want kids to have access to books, and for them to be readily available at any time,” she said.

And though not one of the aforementioned LFL’s, others like them have provided many an educational chance and relaxation opportunity for those such as Heights resident Courtnie Hays and her children.

“After returning home from the flood we found that two of our close by neighbors had put one up. Our kids absolutely love the little libraries and we go all the time,” said Hays, who frequents LFL’s on Queenswood and Shelterwood Lane. “The kids love sharing their books and looking through the available books. Thank you to the neighbors that have put the libraries up, we really appreciate them.”
