burbankca.gov/departments/parks-and-recreation When the City of Burbank’s Parks and Recreation Department was established in 1925, there were only two recreational facilities, ten parks and a budget of $3,000. Today, the Department manages forty-one parks and facilities; a public golf course; and has an annual operating budget of over $17 million. For ninety years, the Department has played a key role in creating a sense of community and has prided itself in well-maintained recreation facilities; offering a wide variety of classes, events, and programs for participants of all ages; and access to a variety of special–interest activities such as volunteering, hiking, and golfing. The Department has become the heart of the community by providing enriching opportunities through dedicated people, beautiful parks and inspiring programs.

To continue this tradition and to celebrate the Department’s 90th Anniversary, the Department is encouraging the community to Play More! Living in the twenty-first century, our lives can be consumed by smart phones, video games, laptops, tablets and countless other electronic devices. As a result, many of us have forgotten how to play. Studies have shown that the act of playing not only improves ones quality of life but, evident in the programming offered by the Department over the last ninety-years, playing also strengthens communities.

Youth Sports 1111 West Olive Avenue 818.238.5330 www.burbankca.gov Monday-Friday..........9:00am-6:00pm Field Conditions Hotline 818.238.1970 The City of Burbank is a member of the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) which advocates positive and safe sports and activities for children. Youth sports programs provide children positive instruction and build basic motor skills.

The National Standards for Youth Sports are used as a guide for operating youth sports programs. NAYS offers programs and services for everyone involved in youth sports experiences, including administrators, volunteer coaches, officials, parents, and young athletes.

YOUTH SPORTS LEAGUES The youth sports program provides various instructional camps, sports leagues, and special programs throughout the year. Recreational competition is provided for both boys and girls. Teams are coached by volunteers who share their time and talent with the participants.

YOUTH TEAM REGISTRATION Youth sports league registration is accepted on a “team basis.” Individual players’ names will be added to a Free Agent List. Players’ names are distributed to existing teams expressing an interest in adding new players or to new teams that are forming. For those players not contacted and placed on a team, their parents are required to attend a parent’s meeting. The purpose of these meetings is to recruit new coaches. Staff will make every attempt to recruit coaches for these players, however there is no guarantee of placement on a team. Individual players interested in playing these sports should contact the Sports Office.

Registration is accepted on a “team basis” only. Divisional classifications range from top-flight play to low-level recreational leagues in a variety of sports. The adult program offers play in basketball, roller hockey, slow-pitch, fast-pitch and modified fast-pitch softball, and volleyball.

ADULT SPORTS LEAGUES The City of Burbank is a member of the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF). The mission of SCMAF is to provide and promote sports training and competition in response to and conducted by its members. The City of Burbank provides opportunities to develop physical fitness and lifelong skills in a variety of team sports for persons of all ages and abilities. Our philosophy is to instill a positive attitude, good sportsmanship, sound fundamentals, confidence, and high moral standards. The City of Burbank and SCMAF seek to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and participation.

BASKETBALL The City of Burbank basketball league includes play for both men and women in the winter, summer, and fall. Men’s leagues play during the week. The women’s league plays on Sunday.

SOFTBALL The City of Burbank’s Softball program is offered in the winter, summer, and fall. Fast Pitch Leagues include men’s on Wednesday, women’s on Sunday, and modified on Friday. Slow Pitch Leagues include men’s on Tuesday and Thursday, senior’s on Sunday, and church on Friday (summer only). Coed Slow Pitch Leagues include open on Sunday and corporate on Monday.

VOLLEYBALL Leagues include women’s 6-player in the winter, women’s 4-player and co-ed in the summer, and men’s 4-player and reverse co-ed in the fall.

BURBANK ATHLETIC FEDERATION Since 1947, the Burbank Athletic Federation (BAF) has assisted the Department with fostering, promoting, and developing amateur athletics in the City of Burbank. The goals of the BAF include building good sportsmanship and character, citizen training, and physical maintenance for all participants as well as encouraging friendly rivalry, group spirit and team play.

All teams may register the first day of priority registration and will be charged the resident team rate at that time. Teams must submit all necessary paperwork, including residency verification by the paperwork deadline. Teams that do not meet the necessary residency requirements will incur an additional $25 non-resident team fee at time of paperwork submission.

All teams registering after priority registration will be charged as a non-resident team regardless of residency.

All teams that do not submit the required paperwork by the stated paperwork deadline will be removed from the league and all league fees less $50 will be returned.

DeBell Golf Club 1500 Walnut Avenue, Burbank, CA 91501 818.845.0022 debellgolf.com The 18-hole “DeBell” course at the DeBell Golf Club facility features 5,633 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71 . The course rating is 68.8 and it has a slope rating of 114 on Kikuyu grass. Designed by William F. Bell, ASGCA/William H. Johnson, ASGCA/(R) Richard Bigler, the DeBell golf course opened in 1959 as a bright, new addition to LA golf.

This club offers a regulation eighteen hole course and a par 3 course. The Regulation Course is very tight and hilly, yet still enjoyable for beginners. Its a great place for the whole family to play. The ladies often play from two sets of tees on this course, while the men play from the same tees. Reservations to play DeBell can be made up to 7 days in advance by calling 818.845.0022.

Artists’ receptions provide an oportunity to meet the artists. Each exibit is approximately three weeks. Come and enjoy the fabulous shows the gallery has to offer.

GALLERY SHOWS “FIRED BY JUNZO” June 5-25, 2015 “Fired by Junzo” is an eclectic exhibit of ceramics, produced by over thirty artists.

These varied works have one thing in common, they were all fired by Junzo Mori. Junzo operates the kilns at the Xiem Clay Center. He has fired literally thousands of kilns containing innumerable ceramic pieces. His expertise has affected, enhanced, and touched the work of many Los Angeles potters. This spring he will be retiring, from the studio, not from ceramics! He will now concentrate on his own work, examples of which will be included in this exhibit. “Fired by Junzo” will be a tribute to and a celebration of the effort and skill that Mr. Mori has dedicated to the local ceramic community. He is truly a treasure. Opening Reception: Friday, June 5, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

CARRIE OLSON “THE NINTH FLOOR” July 10-30, 2015

Art for Carrie begins everyday nine floors up. The view of the city is her inspiration.

Fiber is the foundation of her art. Using line, form, texture and color, she draws, paints, stitches and weaves to create her compositions. Opening Reception: Friday, July 10, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

CREATIVE ARTS CENTER INSTRUCTORS EXHIBIT August 7-27, 2015 The City of Burbank Creative Arts Center will host the “Art Instructors’ Exhibit” showcasing art instructors who teach pottery, painting, jewelry making and weaving.

Pottery will include a variety of techniques, featuring functional as well as sculptural forms. Paintings will consist of various media, including watercolor, oils and acrylics.

Jewelry will also include various materials and styles. Opening Reception: Friday, August 7, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

CHRISTINA RAMOS September 4-24, 2015

Christina Ramos is a nationally recognized artist from Southern California. Specializing in figurative realism, Christina was recently named by American Galleries as one of America’s Great Painters. Her work has been shown throughout the United States and has been honored with awards from Max Ginsburg, Dean Mitchell, Tony Pro, and Kristin Hoerth (Editor and Chief of Southwest Art Magazine). The show will be very eclectic, encompassing traditional as well as humorous and pop culture work.

The Fine Arts Federation is a non-profit organization who support arts within the community and is a valued supporter of the Creative Arts Center. The Fine Arts Federation helps support the Annual Youth Art Expo, Art Experiences Camp, and art classes and workshops held at the Creative Arts Center.

Membership includes announcements for monthly gallery shows, opportunity to participate in the annual membership show held in March, and the opportunity to participate in the annual holiday boutique. Membership dues are $25 for individuals, $20 for seniors, and are valid for one calendar year.

The Stough Canyon Nature Center, nestled in the Verdugo Mountains, has an exibit hall with educational and interpretive displays, small library, classroom and outdoor amphitheatre. Hiking trails start out from the Center. Free maps and information on trails and local habitats are provided.

MONTHLY HIKES AND ACTIVITIES Activities are 1 to 1/1/2 hours. Hike length and difficulty will vary. Hikers should bring water and wear appropriate clothes and shoes. Meet at the Stough Canyon Nature Center unless otherwise noted. Adults must accompany children under 10 years. Strollers are not recommended for hikes. Rain cancels hikes. Recreational Swim Refund Policy Refunds for the activity pool will only be issued in the event the area is closed within the first thirty minutes of the session. A pass will be issued in the event the activity pool is closed after the first thirty minutes and prior to seventy-five minutes of the session start time. Refunds for the competition pool will only be issued in the event the pool is closed within the first hour of the session. A pass will be issued in the event the pool is closed after the first hour and prior to the second hour of the open hours. Closure of the pool after the second hour will not be compensated for.

This high-energy progressive class contains a blend of several styles of Hip Hop. Dancers warm-up, are introduced to across the floor technique and build skills and vocabulary needed for higher levels of Hip Hop and dance.

Extreme “Jazz” Workshop

Designed to introduce and bridge dancers to level 2 Hip Hop/Jazz, evaluate new dancers and challenge continuing dancers. This workshop gives you the technique needed for jazz dance and works on the high energy showmanship needed to pop on stage. Dancers learn beginning/ intermediate jazz choreography, formations and floor work. The class will put on a mini show on the last day to showcase the dancers. A $5 music fee is due at the first class.

Hip Hop Dance Level 1 is a pre-requisite for this intermediate class. Continuing dancers are introduced to more advanced Hip Hop moves, add Jazz to their dance range and advanced across the floor technique. Sway your hips this way and escape to the Hawaiian Islands by taking this fun and educational class on the art of Hula, the dance of Hawai’i. In addition to a few dances, students will learn Hawaiian language and history as well as basic hula steps and hand motions.

Learning and perfecting across the floor technique is essential to excel in jazz dance. This class will include a warm-up, barre work, body placement, turns and at least 10 across the floor elements. Hand Sewing

Join us in an amusing and engaging journey into the fascinating Jurassic world while building challenging robot models of dinosaurs. Building these Dinorobots will introduce students to the fundamentals of robotics. Students will have the chance to experiment in archeological digs, in which they will study fossils of a variety of dinosaurs. *Students will take home every model built throughout the course. This class is for both beginning and intermediate students.

The beginning student will be learning the basic stitches, including two projects. Intermediate students will move on to more advanced stitchery and projects. Pottery, Wheel and Glaze

Students will be instructed on how to create functional and decorative pieces; vases, lidded boxed or free standing figurative sculptures, and how to incorporate extruded forms into their projects. Basic introduction in anatomy and proportion for sculpting the human figure, animal and geometric forms will be provided. Beginning students will start instructed projects designated by the teacher, while the advanced students may work independently. A $10 non-refundable supply fee is included in class fee. yoga Aroma Yoga This eclectic class combines several disciplines with a focus on breathing, strengthening and spinal flexibility practiced to the aroma of pure essential oils that can be calming or invigorating, depending on the oils used. It shares the same roots as Karate and leverages natural movement to achieve efficiency, fluidity and dexterity regardless of age, to achieve a happy, balanced and useful life.

All class registration will only be accepted through the second class meeting and all original class fees will apply.

Non-Resident fees apply to those living outside of the City of Burbank. Non-Residents must include an additional $5 per person, per class.

Mail-In registrations postmarked prior to the Resident and NonResident postmark dates will be processed last.

Programs are filled on a first come, first served basis.

All programs are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment numbers are not met.

If a class is full, students will be placed on the waiting list and payment will be returned. Students will be enrolled in an alternate choice if one is provided. If a fee adjustment is required, the student will be notified.

Enrollments from the waiting list will be made in the order in which the list was formed.

Class schedules are correct up to the date of publication, however may be subject to change without notice.

The City assumes no responsibilty for registrations not received.

Refund / Transfer Policy The City of Burbank strives to provide quality recreation classes and programs. If you are unable to attend or are not satisfied with a class, we will be happy to arrange a transfer to another class (if space is available) or process a refund if the following guidelines are met: • Class lasting 3 or more weeks - A request for refund/transfer must be given to registration staff a minimum of one business day prior to the second class meeting. A $10 administration fee will be assessed for each class refund. No refund/transfer will be issued after the second class meeting.

• Class or workshop lasting 2 or fewer weeks - A request for refund/transfer must be given to registration staff a minimum of five business days prior to the scheduled start date of the class or workshop. A $10 administration fee will be assessed for each class refund. No refund/transfer will be issued after this date.

• Material/Supply fees are non-refundable.

• Refunds issued by check will take between 3-6 weeks to receive in the mail.

Waiver For and in consideration of my use of any City of Burbank facility and/or participation in any program, I hereby voluntarily release, discharge, waive, and relinquish any and all actions or causes of action for personal injury, property damage or wrongful death against the City of Burbank or any of its officers, agents, servants or employees, whether the same shall arise by the negligence of any of said persons, or otherwise, occurring to me as a result of the use of any City facility and/or participation in any City programs/activities incidental thereto wherever or however the same may occur and for whatever period said use and/or programs/activities may continue.

I understand that this RELEASE, INDEMNIFICATION AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK AGREEMENT shall apply not only to me but also to my and/or their heirs, executors, administrators, next of kin, assigns, and successors.
