Fun Facts about November November is a month of seasonal change, as autumn leaves fall and temperatures begin to drop. It’s a time for Thanksgiving celebrations, family gatherings, pumpkin pie and preparing for the colder days ahead. Historically, November has been associated with harvest traditions, gratitude and the transition from autumn to winter. As the days grow shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, many animals begin preparing for winter, making November a month filled with interesting traditions and natural changes. Origins of November In Latin, “novem” means nine. November was originally the ninth month in the ancient Roman calendar when March was the first month. It is now the 11th month in the Gregorian calendar and has 30 days. In Old England, November was known as Blotmonath, meaning “month of sacrifice.” During this time, people followed special traditions and prepared their food supplies for the coming winter. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, these customs were an important part of life as the seasons changed. November was also called Windmonath, or “wind month,” in Anglo-Saxon traditions, reflecting the windy weather associated with the season. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, these early names reflected the importance of changing seasons and preparing for winter. Although the calendar changed over time, November kept its original Latin name. November’s Animal Mascot Think of Thanksgiving, and turkeys often come to mind. But there is more to these birds than their holiday connection. Wild turkeys are native to North America and are surprisingly strong fliers. According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, wild turkeys can fly at speeds of up to 54 miles per hour and sleep in trees at night to stay safe from predators. They also have excellent daytime vision and can communicate using a variety of different sounds. November is strongly associated with the turkey because of Thanksgiving, making this fascinating bird a recognizable symbol of the month. Seasonal Oddities and Astronomical Facts November’s full moon is traditionally known as the Beaver Moon, a name associated with the time of year when beavers prepare their lodges and store food for winter. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name is connected to seasonal changes and the preparation for freezing temperatures. The November full moon is also sometimes called the Frost Moon because frost becomes more common as winter approaches. The Leonids meteor shower, which peaks in mid-November, comes from debris left behind by Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. NASA explains that the Leonids are among the fastest meteor showers, with meteors traveling at approximately 44 miles per second. These meteors can produce bright streaks of light across the night sky, and occasionally the shower creates spectacular meteor storms. November is also known for Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month in the United States. According to the National Archives, President Abraham Lincoln established an annual national Thanksgiving observance in 1863, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation in 1941 establishing the fourth Thursday of November as the official holiday. Thanksgiving has since become a tradition associated with gratitude. Etymonline.com

NUTRITION Nourishing News Are Herbs Beneficial to Health? Herbs have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes. Herbs are from the aromatic leaves of plants such as rosemary, mint, basil, parsley, dill, sage and thyme. Research regarding the health benefits of herbs is ongoing and some studies show evidence of a potential positive impact on health. Although much of the research is not definitive, herbs are nutrient-rich and can enhance the flavor. Try adding herbs to your meals to enjoy the added health benefits that they may provide.

Health Benefits of Herbs Herbs contain substances that may have a positive impact on health. Here are some herbs with potential health benefits: Basil - may boost immunity, while decreasing bacteria, yeast and mold growth. Although the studies are small, basil may decrease blood sugar and reduce anxiety. Cilantro - possible benefits to brain health, reduces anxiety and lowers blood sugar. It has an antimicrobial compound that may help protect against infections. Dill– rich in antioxidants, may reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease and lower LDL cholesterol. Mint - may improve digestion, reduce abdominal bloating and pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Oregano - rich in antioxidants, may help fight bacteria, and could reduce the risk of cancer and decrease inflammation. Parsley - an antioxidant that is rich in Vitamin C and K. Vitamin K helps blood clot and supports bone health. Parsley may decrease the risk of stroke and chronic medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Rosemary - enhances memory and may reduce allergy symptoms and nasal congestion due to anti-inflammatory properties. Sage - may improve brain function and memory. Using & Storing Herbs Herbs add a variety of flavor to food without adding salt. If you substitute fresh with dried herbs, use 1 part dried to 3-parts fresh. It is best to start with a little and add more as needed. A little goes a long way! Here are some common pairings: • Basil, Cilantro, Parsley or Mint - add fresh leaves to salads. Mint can be added to water • Rosemary or Sage - pair with chicken, turkey, lamb or pork, mashed potatoes and butternut squash • Sage, Dill or Parsley - enhance the flavor of fish and potatoes. • Oregano or Basil - add to pasta or tomato salad. Store in airtight containers in a cool dark place. The shelf-life is 1-2 years depending on type, processing and storage. They can be used when past their prime; however, will lose most of their aroma and flavor.
