MAY UPDATES

Just like that, we’re leaving behind the April showers and looking forward to our May flowers! Even though our weather lately has been all over the place, there’s been a nice break in our California typical hot weather. With that being said, Summer is just around the corner and it’s time to fire up the BBQs and have some fun out in the sun!

This year also marks the start of the City’s 100 Centennial Celebration! Our lovely Parks and Recreation Department was established 100 years ago, and what better way to ring in a new year than with amazing events and merchandise celebrating our wonderful city! As the year unfolds, keep a lookout on our Burbank website for information on how we plan to celebrate our Centennial year, to learn more and to purchase some Centennial gear, visit our website: https:// www.burbankca.gov/web/parks-recreation/burbank-parkscentennial

Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in May. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone. If there is anyone out there missing daytrips - there may be a temporary fix for that travel want. The “On the Move” program holds trips every month right out of Joslyn. They take a group of people to places such as museums, art exhibits, outlet malls and so much more. Be sure to check out their ad on the “Joslyn and Tuttle” events pages to learn more about how to join in on their trips!

The Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Centers will be closed Monday, May 26th in observance of Memorial Day.

The History Behind Memorial Day

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

The Birthplace of Memorial Day and Early Observances

The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. And some records show that one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was organized by a group of formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

Decoration Day

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.

The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried there.

Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and reprised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. Southern states, on the other hand, continued to honor the dead on separate days until after World War I.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Indoor Chair Volleyball

Thursdays at Joslyn 12:45pm-1:45pm

Its just like volleyball, but in a chair using a beach ball. The game follows regular volleyball rules with some exceptions. The beach ball is larger than a regular volleyball so it is easier to control. There are many benefits to chair volleyball, such as reducing stress, improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing flexibility and toning muscles. This is a great way to enjoy some exercise and socialize. You don’t have to be a pro at volleyball, or know how to play, the goal is to get moving and to have fun while doing it. If you’re available, come by and join in on the fun!

Soulful Seniors

Fridays at Joslyn 2:00pm-4:00pm

The purpose of this group is to explore well-known religions, including Native American spiritual practices, and lesser known spiritual communities and their philosophies. Individual members volunteer to explore and present weekly topics. No one is expected to be an expert in what they present, but rather to share what has peaked their curiosity. Every meeting, a new speaker is chosen to bring in a topic they’d like to talk about, and gather the thoughts and opinions form their peers. This club is a safe space to bring in new ideas and have open, peaceful discussions with the purpose of educating their peers.

Painting

Last Fridays at Joslyn 10:45-11:30am T-Shirt

Come and create your very own wearable work of art in our T-Shirt Painting class with Virginia. All you need to bring is a pre-washed, light shade color t-shirt. All other supplies will be provided. You will be guided through the process step-by-step, then leave with your very own unique masterpiece. Aside from t-shirts, you can also paint on aprons, pillowcases, and cotton or canvas shopping bags. Class fee is $2. If you have any range of creativity and artistic ability, and have been wanting to make your own designs, this is the place to do it!
