The History of Independence Day The Fourth of July - also known as Independence Day or July 4th - celebrates the birth of American independence from the British Empire. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.

Designated as a federal holiday across the United States in 1938, Independence Day celebrations have existed as far back as the 18th century and even the American Revolution. Festivities range from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Fourth of July History When the initial battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain. Those who did were considered radical. By the middle of the following year, however, many more colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in the bestselling pamphlet “Common Sense”, published by Thomas Paine in early 1776.

One June 7, when the Second Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for colonies’ independence. Amid heated debate, the Congress postponed the vote on Lee’s resolution but appointed a five-man committee including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert R. Livingston of New York - to draft a formal statement justifying the break with Great Britain.

On July 2, the Continental Congress approved Lee’s resolution for independence in a near-unanimous vote (the New York delegation abstained but later voted affirmatively).

The following day, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, that July 2 “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that celebration should include “Pomp and Parade...Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.”

On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which Jefferson largely wrote. Although the vote for actual independence took place on July 2, from then on the Fourth of July became the day that was celebrated as the start of American independence.

Fourth of July Fireworks The first fireworks were used as early as 200 BC. The tradition of setting off fireworks on the Fourth of July began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during a spontaneous citywide celebration. A ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported: “at night there was a grand exhibition (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.” That same night, the Sons of Liberty set off fireworks over Boston Common.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Indoor Chair Volleyball Wednesdays & Thursdays at joslyn We 2:30pm-3:15pm I Th 2:15pm-3:15pm It’s just like volleyball, but in a chair using a beach ball.

The game follows regular volleyball rules however, you use a beach ball. There are many benefits to chair volleyball, such as reducing stress, improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing flexibility and toning muscles. This is a great way to enjoy some exercise and socialize. The goal is to get moving and to have fun while doing it. If you’re available, come by and join in on the fun! Please be aware that the Wednesday class is with Marsha, while the Thursday class is with Harry.

Crunch Time Tuesdays at Joslyn 10:30am-11:15am This workout class will focus on core work, both standing and chair exercises, and light weight workouts. Towards the end of the class, we will be incorporating some floor work. This class does not supply any equiptment, aside form the chair, so we recommend you bring a yoga mat and some light weights. Similar to our other workout classes, you can adjust the severity of this class, but floorwork is an integral part of the class. So be sure you’re prepared for that section of the workout class.

Ukulele Thursdays at Joslyn 12:00pm-2:00pm Joslyn Ukulele Group is a peer-led round robin jam session comprised of very friendly and forgiving players of all abilities. The emphasis is on fun, not perfection. We are not a teaching group, but any of us are happy to help newer players with any questions or tips and tricks to make playing more fun.

We play songs that cross a variety of genres, from simple two or three chord songs to much more challenging material. Members are welcome to participate as much or as little as they want, even if it’s just to sing along. Our July 2026 trip is scheduled twice for an art and architecture tour of historic Union Station. We will explore the building’s Mission Moderne architecture and diverse public art. One trip is on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 and the second trip is on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. The On the Move Riders Club will be traveling on the Burbank Bus (Pink Route) to Universal Metro Station. We will take the Red Line to Union Station. We will meet up with an Art Docent for a tour. Then, we will walk to Olvera Street for lunch. We are limited to the number of travelers we may take with us so sign up in advance is REQUIRED. Please sign up by July 10, 2026.

NUTRITION SERVICES HYBRID MEAL DISTRIBUTION

HOME DELIVERED MEALS PROGRAM

The City of Burbank Nutrition Program is practicing a Hybrid Meal Distribution. All three nutrition sites are now open for dinein! However, program participants may choose to take their meals to-go.

The City of Burbank Home Delivered Meals Program provides homebound individuals with: • 5 to 7 nutritious meals per week in addition to milk, juice, fruit and bread • Voluntary suggested donation is $3.00

• 5 meals are served each week: 2 hot meals, 2 cold meals, and 1 frozen meal alongside milk, juice, fruit, and bread.

• Tables are sanitized; disposable utensils are provided.

• Bringing a cooler or insulated bag is encouraged.

• Patrons must first enroll in the program

Lunch Pick-up

The HDM Program is currently accepting applications. To qualify, applicants must be: • A Burbank resident • At least 60 years of age • Evaluated by staff to determine need and eligibility For more information and/or enrollment, please call (818) 238-5366.

Effective October 2023, the Hybrid meal distribution program will offer dine- in meals on Monday through Thursday from 11:00- 12noon.,and Friday will receive frozen meals. Grab and Go meal distribution will remain the same, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11a.m. to 12:00.

The mission of the Elderly Nutrition Program is to improve the well-being of older adults and help older adults remain independent and in their communities by providing nutritious meals and socialization.

The menu writing specifications and requirements are developed by the County of Los Angeles Area Agency on Aging. This helps facilitate the menu writing process annually and encourages agencies and caterers to meet the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20202025. The menu is set for a six week cycle. The approved menu by the Los Angeles County dietitian assists us and our project dietitian in providing nutritious, appetizing, and high quality meals for our seniors.

NUTRITION Nourishing News: Tips to Support Brain Health Are you feeling forgetful? It could be due to a lack of sleep, lifestyle, environmental factors, or even activity level. It may be a medical condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes. However, there is no doubt that a healthy eating pattern along with healthful lifestyle choices can play a role in supporting brain health.

Brain - Diet Connection • Scientific evidence has shown that eating patterns such as the Mediterranean eating pattern and the MIND diet may be beneficial to the body as well as the brain. Both help to protect against cognitive decline, improve memory and improve alertness.

• The Mediterranean eating pattern is rich in vegetables, fish, legumes and healthy fats. The MIND diet is similar to the Mediterranean pattern.

• Certain nutrients are key in supporting brain health. These include omega-3 fats, vitamins B6, B12, foliate, D and choline, and antioxidants and phytonutrients. It is best to get these nutrients from a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and healthy fats.

• Saturated and hydrogenated fats, typically found in processed foods, are associated with dementia, as these foods promote inflammation and should be minimized.

• Changes in gut microbiome may also be related to inflammation in the brain. The gut microbiome contains both good and bad bacteria. Foods that feed the good bacteria, including fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sourdough and tempeh. These have been shown to improve the gut microbiome.

Beyond Diet - Maintain Your Brain Health Healthy lifestyle choices are also important when it comes to brain health, mental sharpness and reducing the risk for dementia.

• Challenge your brain with puzzles, games and reading.

• Stay socially connected with family, friends and your community.

• Keep physically active, as this will increase blood flow to the brain.

• Limit alcohol intake “Key Foods” for the MIND Dark Leafy Greens - spinach, kale, broccoli Berries & Cirtus - especially blueberries Whole Grains - oats, quinoa, kasha, barley Nuts - walnuts & almonds in moderation Beans & Lentils - chickpeas, black & pinto beans Protein - eggs, poultry, seafood especially salmon, tuna, sardines, herring Healthy Fats - especially olives oil & avocados in moderation

This presentation, "Aging in Place vs. Rightsizing: How to Choose What’s Best for You," is designed to help seniors make informed, confident decisions about their future living situation. We’ll explore the pros and cons of aging in place and rightsizing, debunk common myths, and walk through a simple decision framework to assess your home’s fit. Through real-life stories, practical tips, and a short reflective activity, you'll gain clarity on which path best supports your lifestyle, safety, and goals.
