JANUARY UPDATES JOSLYN ADULT CENTER
Happy New Year Everyone! Just like that, we have entered a New Year, and we feel honored to have you all alongside us on this journey. While 2025 was filled with uncertainties and possible hardships, it was also filled with friendship, laughter and new programs for us here. Every year we here at your adult centers strive to bring you new and improved activites, whether it be the return of our Day Trips, new and exciting classes, lectures and programs. We want to hear from you, the people actually participating in all the listed events, so if you have any ideas on a new class you want to see, or a recommendation for an upcoming trip, we want to hear it! Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in January. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone to look forward to. Not only do we offer “On the Move”, which takes trips to various places, Joslyn has also started their Day Trip program, so be sure to stop by the JAC front desk, or the BVP office to learn more. For more information about “On the Move”, be sure to check out their advertisement further in this newsletter! For the most up-to-date information on classes, events, and our monthly presentations, please visit Joslyn and Tuttle or check out our website: www.burbankca.gov/adults55 Thank you again for always showing up to the centers and making our days better each time, let’s get ready to start this new year off right! -Joslyn and Tuttle Staff Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Centers will be closed on January 1st in observance of New Year’s Day.

The Best Ways to Make (and Keep) Your New Year’s Resolutions According to new research, only 12% of people manage to stick to their resolutions over the course of a single year. The message is clear - change is hard, but not impossible! In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know to help you finally conquer your resolutions and start becoming the best version of yourself. Before we start, here are a few reasons why New Year’s Resolutions Fail: •
You set unrealistic and vague goals (Most New Year’s resolutions are vague and outcome-focused instead of detailed and process-oriented)
•
You don’t keep track of your goals (Because New Year’s resolutions tend to involved change that’s slow and gradual, we often can’t see it, that’s why it’s so important to keep a record of your progress)
•
You don’t have a purpose (Most people don’t spend enough time focusing on the why of the change they want to make)
•
You set too many goals (It may be tempting to set multiple goals at once, but research shows that this isn’t very conducive to success, to give yourself the best chance of success, don’t spread yourself too thin. Focus on one major goal and channel all your energy into that.
11 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions Create Micro-Goals Try setting the absolute smallest goal you can think of - just one tiny step toward your bigger goal. For example, let’s say your resolution is to read more, rather than jumping into a tough novel, maybe a micro-goal could be something along the lines of reading a chapter from your book every week or so. Once you accomplish that one micro-goal, start the next one.
Make SMART Goals SMART - a popular mnemonic for best goal-setting practices - stands for “Specific, Measurable, Acheivable, Realistic and Time-Based.” To start, be as specific as possible, instead of “lose weight”, how much weight do you want to lose to get to your target? How much time do you think it would take?
Find your Purpose Spend some time thinking about your desires and motivations. How exactly would your goal benefit your life?
Chase, don’t be chased Research has shown that approach-oriented goals (i.e., goals that involve actively doing something, such as going to the gym) tend to have higher success rates than avoidance-oriented goals (i.e., goals that involve not doing something, such as quitting alcohol). PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Ballroom Dance Thursdays at Joslyn 7:00-9:30pm
Come and enjoy live music every Thursday night at Joslyn from 7:00p,-9:30pm. Singles and couples are all welcome. This is not a class, but a fun activity for ballroom dancers and music lovers. T’ai Chi Chih Every other Monday at Tuttle 10:00am-11:00am The motions of T’ai Chi Chih are entirely centered on the cultivation of an ebergy known as Chi. Anyone can learn it, and it doesn’t require any particular level of coordination or physical condition. The emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual changes that can result from this practice are immensely beneficial. T’ai Chi Chih uses one stance and 19 moves to awaken our inner force. T’ai Chi Chih is regarded by many as a form of moving meditation due to its ability to relax the mind and relieve tension in the body.
