How to Give Back During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for joy, warmth, and connection, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to spread kidness and compassion. For many people, this time of year can be challenging, so giving back can make a world of difference. Acts of generosity, big or small, bring communities together and lift spirits.

Whether you’re looking to volunteer, donate, or simply brighten someone’s day, there are many thoughtful ways to help others during the holidays. The ideas below are simple to do but can make a lasting impact. From helping neighbors to supporting charities, here are a few ways to give back this holiday season.

Volunteer at a Local Shelter

Local shelters are often in need of volunteers, especially during the holiday season when more people seek warmth and assistance. Spend a few hours helping prepare meals, organize donations, or clean up common areas. Not only does this provide immediate support to those in need, but it also builds a sense of community. Many shelters welcome volunteers of all ages, so consider bringing family or friends. By giving your time, you help provide comfort and care to people who may be struggling. It’s a small commitment that leaves a big impact.

Donate Food to a Food Bank

Food banks are essential year-round, but the demand often increases during the holidays. Gather non-perishable items like vegetables, pasta, and boxed meals to donate. Many grocery stores even have drop-off bins, making it easy to give as you shop. If you’re able, consider donating fresh produce as well, as these items are harder for food banks to stock. Your donations can help families enjoy warm meals during the season. Food banks will appreciate your kindess, and you’ll know you’ve made a real difference.

Participate in a Toy Drive

Toy drives bring joy to children whose families may not be able to afford gifts. Check with local charities, schools, or stores that organize toy drives, and pick out some toys for donation. Focus on items that are safe and suitable for a range of ages, as well as toys that encourage creativity. Some organizations even let you buy gifts online and ship them directly. Knowing that your gift will bring a smile to a child’s face makes this effort all the more special. It’s a fun and meaningful way to spread holiday cheer.

Make Care Packages for the Homeless

Care packages can provide comfort to those experiencing homelessness, especially during colder months. Include items like warm socks, gloves, hygiene products, and snacks. Adding a small note or holiday card can make the package feel more personal.

Bake Cookies for Neighbors or First Responders

Baking homemade treats is a simple way to spread joy around your community. Pack up some cookies or treats and deliver them to neighbors, firefighters, officers, or healthcare workers.

Host a Holiday Gift Wrapping Party for Charity

Organize a holiday gift-wrapping with friends and family where everyone wraps gifts for charity. Many organizations accept donated toys and goods but need help wrapping them.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Genetics, Psychology, and Forensics

Wednesdays at Joslyn 3:00pm-5:00pm

Have you ever wanted to learn more about genetics? How about psychology or forensics? Well, we have a new discussion group starting at Joslyn covering all these topics and more! Come by and share with the group your questions and thoughts about any and all things related to genetics, psychology and forensics. Converse with others that share the same interests as you. We welcome all people, with all ranges of knowledge about these topics so please stop by! The group is facilitated by James L. Atwell, MA, author of How to Improve your Life: Dreams, Self-Therapy & Genetics.

Indoor Chair Volleyball

Thursdays at Joslyn 12:45pm-1:45pm

It’s just like volleyball, but in a chair using a beach ball! The game follows the same rules as regular volleyball, with some exceptions. The beach ball is larger than a regular volleyball so it is easier to hit and control. There are many benefits to chair volleyball, such as reducing stress, improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing flexibility and toning muscles. There is no experience needed, just stop by, and join in on the fun. If you’re looking for a fun way to socialize and work out, this is the epitome of perfection for you. If this is the first or only exercise class you do, this is the best choice so come on by and join in on the fun!

Kundalini Chair Yoga

Mondays at Joslyn 9:00am-10:00am

Kundalini Yoga is an ancient yoga that is referred to as the Yoga of Awareness. The asanas are based on moving the Kundalini Energy throughout the spine, enhancing brain function and intuition with movements and breath. This practice includes Reiki Self Healing Energy work as we check in with Self and then move back into balancing the mind, body and spirit. We end with meditation to open our intuitive self and re-wire our brain connections creating a deep sense of relaxation in our Central Nervous System. This yoga is intuitive and that means “TRUST YOURSELF”. No experience is needed for this class.

The menu writing specifications and requirements are developed by the County of Los Angeles Area Agency on Aging. This helps facilitate the menu writing process annually and encourages agencies and caterers to meet the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20202025. The menu is set for a six week cycle. The approved menu by the Los Angeles County dietitian assists us and our project dietitian in providing nutritious, appetizing, and high quality meals for our seniors.
