Fun Facts about August In the northern hemisphere, August is what we call the dog days of summer. The weather is gloriously warm, the gardens are lush with vegetables ready to pick, and the parks and beaches are packed with people enjoying the last few weeks of summer vacation. August is such a blissful month, isn’t it?

August is a time to relax and recharge for the coming seasons, but do you know what August is known for though? Well, with these fun facts about August, we’ll discover that August is just a little bit quirky too.

As a month, August has been put through the ringer. Its name has changed numerous times, its number of days has been switched up as well. Let’s find out what rare gemstone forged in lava represents August, and some other fun facts such as the theft of the Mona Lisa, and the invention of the sandwich for good measure.

August was once the 6th month of the year In the Roman calendar, August was known as “Sextilis”, the Latin word for 6. It wasn’t until 700 BC when January and February were added to the calendar, that August was bumped down to become the 8th month of the year.

How many days are in August?

The number of days in August has changed many times, first it was 30 days, and then 31. Once January and February came into the calendar, August got reduced to 29 days, which then Julius Caesar changed back to 31 days, and it has remained that way since.

While previously being named “Sextilis”, the month was renamed in honor of Augustus Caesar, the Roman emperor and adopted son of Julius Caesar. Eventually, Augustus was shortneed to how we know it today - August.

No other month with the same starting day Here is one of the more interesting August facts - in a regular year, no other month starts on the same day of the week as August. In a leap year, that other quirky month, February, will start on the same day of the week as August.

August is the month of...

Sandwiches! This makes sense because the sandwich was invented in August of 1762 when the Earl of Sandwich (yes, that’s a real guy) requested two pieces of bread with meat inside.

August is a good month for a heist The Mona Lisa was famously stolen in August of 1911 and wasn’t recovereed for two years.

In a more recent August heist, the Poly Network heist of 2021 stole over $600 million FunFacts.com worth of cryptocurrency.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Ballroom Dance Thursdays at Joslyn Th 7:00pm-9:30pm Come and enjoy live music every Thursday night at Joslyn from 7:00pm-9:30pm. Singles and couples are all welcome. This is not a class, but a fun activity for ballroom dancers and music lovers. Any and all experience levels are welcome; the overall point of this program is to come and listen to good music cash only ($10.00 cash with an active BSAC). The Thursday Night Ballroom Dance group hopes to see you there!

Basic Fitness Tuesdays & Wednesdays at Joslyn Tu 9:00am-10:00am I We 8:30am-9:30am This exercise class is designed for all fitness levels.

It follows a CD that instructs the group. There is no equipment needed for this exercise class. Only a chair is required, which is provided by the Joslyn center.

This class focuses on every joint, working your body from head to toe. This workout class is perfect for any and all exercise levels, whether you’re a natural or you’re looking to get back into exercising. This class can be modified to best support you, whether it be any type of mobility issue, or you want to challenge yourself a little bit

Wednesday Bridge Wednesdays at Joslyn We 11:00am-2:00pm The Wednesday Bridge club would like to welcome all bridge players to their friendly and social group. You can either come alone or with a group, they will find a table for you to come play. This is not an instructional class, you must know how to play bridge. All bridge players are welcome, and regardless if you come alone or with a group, our group will guarantee you’ll be able to play, we welcome all bridge players and hope to see some new faces to our group. Our August 2026 trip is scheduled twice for an art tour of the Craft Contemporary Museum located on the Miracle Mile of Los Angeles. Their mission is to reveal the potential of craft to educate, captivate, provoke and empower. The current exhibits are Tierra, Earthen Comforts, and Jackie Amezquita. We were graciously gifted complimentary admission. Our group will be given a tour of the museum.

Please bring a bag lunch so we can picnic on their patio.

One trip is on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 and the second trip is on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. On the Move Riders Club will be traveling on the Burbank Bus (Pink Route) to Universal Metro Station. We will take the Red Line to Wilshire & Vermont Station. From there, we will travel on the D Line to Wilshire & Fairfax. We are limited to the number of travelers we may take with us so sign up in advance is REQUIRED. Please sign up by August 8, 2026.

Requirements: - You MUST sign a Metro waiver form at time of trip.

- You MUST have a current Burbank Active Card w/a bus stamp and a valid Metro TAP card w/stored cash value.

- You MUST sign up by calling Barbara DeVall or emailing Maria Kerrigan to be included in this trip.

- Wear walking shoes and comfortable travel clothing.

- Bring a hat, snack and a bottle of water since we will be out and about.

HOME DELIVERED MEALS PROGRAM

The City of Burbank Nutrition Program is practicing a Hybrid Meal Distribution. All three nutrition sites are now open for dinein! However, program participants may choose to take their meals to-go.

The City of Burbank Home Delivered Meals Program provides homebound individuals with: • 5 to 7 nutritious meals per week in addition to milk, juice, fruit and bread • Voluntary suggested donation is $3.00

• 5 meals are served each week: 2 hot meals, 2 cold meals, and 1 frozen meal alongside milk, juice, fruit, and bread.

• Tables are sanitized; disposable utensils are provided.

• Bringing a cooler or insulated bag is encouraged.

• Patrons must first enroll in the program

To enroll in the meal program, call the location from which you would like to pick up. After submitting an application, a start date will be given. Must be 60+ to qualify.

The mission of the Elderly Nutrition Program is to improve the well-being of older adults and help older adults remain independent and in their communities by providing nutritious meals and socialization.

The menu writing specifications and requirements are developed by the County of Los Angeles Area Agency on Aging. This helps facilitate the menu writing process annually and encourages agencies and caterers to meet the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20202025. The menu is set for a six week cycle. The approved menu by the Los Angeles County dietitian assists us and our project dietitian in providing nutritious, appetizing, and high quality meals for our seniors.

NUTRITION Eat Right: Eating Right on a Budget Getting the most nutrition for your food budget starts with a little extra planning before you shop. There are many ways to save money on the foods that you eat.

Here are some budget-friendly tips for eating right.

Cook more, eat out less Eating out can be expensive. Many foods can be prepared for less money (and more healthfully) at home. Pre-packaged foods, like frozen dinners and packaged pasta or rice mixes can also add up when you calculate the cost per serving.

Find a few simple, healthy recipes your family enjoys and save eating out for special occasions.

Plan what you’re going to eat Deciding on meals and snacks before you shop can save both time and money. Review recipes and make a grocery list of what ingredients are needed, then check to see what foods you already have and make a list for what you still need to buy. When shopping with a list you will be less likely to buy things that are not on it. To “Create a Grocery Game Plan”, visit MyPlate.gov.

Decide how much to make or buy Making a large batch by doubling a recipe will save time in the kitchen later on. Extra portions can be used for lunches or meals later in the week, or frozein as leftovers in individual containers for future uses. Plus, purchasing ingredients in bulk is often cheaper.

Determine where to shop Check the local newspaper and online or at the stores for sales and coupons, especially when it comes to more expensive ingredients, such as meat and seafood. While at the store, compare prices of different brands and different sizes of the same brand to see which which has a lower unit price. The unit price is usually located on the shelf directly below the product.

Shop for foods that are in season Fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually easier to get and may be less expensive. Frozen and canned produce are also also good options and may be more affordable at certain times of the year. Look for fruit that is canned in 100% juice or water and canned vegetables that are labeled “low in sodium” or “no salt added”.

Watch Portion Sizes Eating too much of even lower cost foods and beverages can add up to extra dollars and calories. Use smaller plates, bowls and glasses to help keep portions under control. Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables and the other half with grains and protein foods such as lean meat, poultry, seafood or beans. This is an easy way to eat a balanced meal while controlling portions and costs. To complete the meal, add a glass of fat-free or low-fat milk or a serving of fat-free yogurt for dessert.

Quench your thirst with water Water from the tap is a low cost way to stay hydrated.

Substituting plain water in place of sweetened beverages not only saves you money but may also help you reduce extra calories from added sugars.

Make your own healthy snacks Convenience costs money. Many snacks, even healthy ones, usually cost more when sold individually. Make your own snacks by purchasing large tubs of low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese and dividing them into smaller containers.

For trail mix, combine unsalted nuts, dried fruit and whole grain pretzels or cereal; store small portions in airtight containers. Air-popped popcorn and whole fresh fruits in season also tend to cost less compared to pre-packaged items.

BURBANK BUS Burbank Bus Senior & Disabled Transit provides transportation service to Burbank residents age 60 or over or disabled (with doctor’s certification). This service transportation within the City of Burbank.
