Happy Spring!
After the last month being a mix of cold rainy weather to scorching hot weather, hopefully this month will bring more consistency with it’s ‘April Showers’. Regardless, this month celebrates Earth Day, so what better month than April to go out and spend some time in nature. Either by taking walks in your local park, gardening or just being in your yard.
As always, we here at the Joslyn and Tuttle Centers work to bring you the best of the best, whether it be services, activities, or fun events and performances. We want to make sure you enjoy your time at the centers. Make sure to check our schedule as we do have new classes coming to the Joslyn Center.
Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in April as well as health presentations, and class series; there is something for everyone to look forward to. Earth Day is more than just a date on the calendar - it’s a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect and cherish the planet we call home. Every April 22nd, millions of people around the world come together to advocate for a healthier and more sustainable Earth. But the truth is, the choices we make every day have a lasting impact. Whether through small personal changes or collective action, we can all contribute to a better future. Instead of viewing Earth Day as just another day for brands to push “eco-conscious” sales, lets use it as an opportunity to reflect, take action, and reconnect with the natural world. Continue reading for a few ways you can give back this Earth Day.

Stepping outside and grounding yourself by walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand helps you reconnect with nature. Studies show that “earthing” can reduce stress, improve sleep, and decrease inflammation in the body,
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans spend 87% of their lives indoors. Spending time outside improved mood, boosts immune function, and reduce stress. Even a short walk can be rejuvenating.
Planting a tree or a pollinator garden helps support biodiversity, clean the air, and combat climate change. Native plants and flowers provide essential food and shelter for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that keep ecosystems thriving.
reuse household items like milk cartons, pinecones, or mason jars to craft a simple bird feeder. This not only reduces waste but also supports local bird populations
Did you know light pollution prevents over 80% of people from seeing the Milky Way? Turn off outdoor lights, grab a blanket, and spend time stargazing.

compositng is a simple yet powerful way to reduce food waste and nourish the soil. Instead of sending food scrap to landfills, where they produce harmful methane gas, turn them into rich, natural fertilizer for your garden. Whether you use a backyard compost bin or a small indoor system, every bit helps reduce waster and support a healthier planet.

Chess is a game of strategy, ad if you’re looking for someone to compete against in chess, the Joslyn Center is the place for you. We have open hours for chess - but understand that this is not a class, nor an instructional activity. This is for those who know how to play chess, but may not have anyone to play with or any place to play at. While there are designated times for chess, our game room is open during normal business hours so you to play chess with your friend, or practice on your own. We have a few chess boards, as well as the pieces so there is no need to come with anything other than yourself!

Joslyn Ukulele Group is a peer-led round robin jam session comprised of very friendly and forgiving players of all abilities. The emphasis is on fun, not perfection. We are not a teaching group, but any of us are happy to help newer players with any questions or tips and tricks to make playing more fun. We play songs that cross a variety of genres, from simple two or three chord songs to much more challenging material. Members are welcome to participate as much or as little as they want, even if it’s just to sing along.

In this exercise class, Charleen will focus on the whole body which includes the cardiovascular system, joint mobility and muscle/vibe strengthening exercises. A 1-3 lb hand weight or a resistance band is needed. This class is great for those who are just starting to exercise and also those that exercise consistently. The focus of Full Body Conditioning is to increase mobility in the joints, increase heart rate, to strengthen the lungs and heart, and strengthen muscles that in turn increase bone density to increase overall function and balance of the body. All exercise classes can be modified for any range of mobility. **Follow at your own pace**
