The People Behind The Purpose!

Earlier this year, we kicked off our Centennial campaign, A Century of Community: Parks, People, and Purpose—and the celebration continues! This edition of the Recreation Guide honors the people who make Burbank Parks and Recreation so special. From volunteers and program participants to families and lifelong supporters, we’re celebrating those who’ve helped shape our parks and programs for 100 years.

Mary Alvord’s Lifelong Journey with Burbank Parks and Recreation

For Mary Alvord, Verdugo Park has always felt like home. Growing up just across the street, she and her three brothers were regulars—attending Tiny Tots, taking craft classes, and playing until the sun went down. At around ten years old, Mary even earned the title of Verdugo Park’s Hula Hoop Champion. Her connection to the park led to a part-time job as a teenager, which launched a remarkable 38-year career with the City of Burbank. Mary served in many roles, from Recreation Leader to Director of Parks and Recreation before, ultimately, becoming Burbank’s City Manager. Now, Mary continues to make Burbank Parks and Recreation a part of her daily life. “I currently take Aqua Trim five days a week. It is a wonderful way to exercise without negatively impacting your joints. It is also a great social opportunity, and I have a friend group that we refer to as "Mermaids!"

Mary’s story is a testament to the power of community and the lasting impact of recreation programs. From childhood crafts and softball games to leadership roles that shaped the city, she’s living the full circle of what Burbank Parks and Recreation offers.

In 2022, the City of Burbank honored Mary’s legacy by renaming the Verdugo Recreation Center to the Mary Alvord Recreation Center—a heartfelt tribute to the very place that inspired her lifelong dedication to public service.

Daira’s Story: Pushing Limits Through Adaptive Sports

Since moving to Burbank five years ago, Daira has found more than parks and programs— she’s found purpose. As an adaptive sports athlete, she was introduced to Burbank Parks and Recreation through the Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo and hasn’t looked back. Over the last two years, Daira has participated in parafencing, wheelchair tennis, and wheelchair rugby through the Department’s inclusive programs. “These programs are special to me,” Daira says. “They’ve helped me gain new skills, meet incredible people, and prove to myself that I’m capable of learning and doing hard things.”

For Daira and her family, Burbank’s parks are also a place for connection. During the summer, they enjoy spending time outdoors together, creating memories in the very parks where her athletic journey began. As Burbank celebrates 100 years of Parks and Recreation, Daira plans to keep showing up, and inspiring others through her passion for adaptive sports.

Pam's Story: Generations of Play

Pam has called Burbank home for nearly 50 years, watching three generations of her family grow up through Parks and Recreation programs. “We’re a sports-oriented family,” she says. “My husband coached our sons in baseball, and now I get to watch my son coach his son—just like his dad did. It’s something I’ll always treasure.”

After retiring, Pam found purpose through the Burbank Volunteer Program, helping twice a week at the Joslyn Adult Center. “Volunteering gives me something to look forward to,” she says. “I love making people feel seen—even just remembering their name can bring a smile.”

Nature Journaling with Teri

Teri’s connection to Burbank Parks and Recreation began in the late 90s, when she taught evening fitness classes at McCambridge Park. After retiring from a technical career, she discovered a passion for nature journaling through art classes at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center and Stough Canyon Nature Center.

In 2019, she started hosting small journaling meetups at Wildwood and Stough Canyon. After a pause during the pandemic, she returned in 2024 as a Burbank Volunteer Program member and now leads monthly Nature Journal Meetups.“I am so happy to meet so many people who are also drawn to nature and meet as a group to share our observations,” Teri says. Burbank’s parks have been part of every chapter of her life—from mountain biking on early dates with her husband to hiking with her children and now exploring nature with her grandchildren.

“My goal is to get people out into nature with my volunteer work and community service at Stough Canyon,” she says.

Congratulations, Andrew!

The Story Behind The Photo: George Izay Park in Burbank has a long history, and generations of "Burbankians" have enjoyed the many features including the tree scattered grassy open spaces, the tennis courts, the softball field, the children's playground and the center of it being the Olive Recreation Center with the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter being a great historic marker at the front of the park.
