Understanding IAD
What is IAD?
Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) is a condition that occurs when the skin is damaged as a result of exposure to urine (with a high pH) and/or faeces (with faecal enzymes). To prevent IAD ensure you use breathable continence products, cleanse the skin with a pH neutral product, and moisturise or protect the skin.
A skin assessment should be conducted on each individual prior to using products.

Performance Core
Consists of an Acquisition and Distribution Layer, long fluff fiber structures, and positioned Super Absorbent Polymers to ensure fast dispersion, high retention, absorption and a dry surface.
Dermatologically Tested
The Dermatologically tested symbol guarantees that a product has been tested for potential skin reactions by an independent third-party laboratory.
Wetness Indicator
Several ABENA products are designed with a wetness indicator that allows you to see how much capacity has been utilised and can be referenced in documentation and reporting.
The wetness indicator consists of a liquid-sensitive strip that changes colour or fades out to indicate when the product is fully utilised and needs to be changed.
Drop System
ABENA labelling uses a ‘drop system’ which serves as a guide to help choose a product with the right absorbency for individual needs. The more drops, the higher the absorption capacity.
1-3 Drops = Light Incontinence
4-5 Drops = Moderate Incontinence
6-8 Drops = Heavy Incontinence
9-12 Drops = Very Heavy Incontinence
pH Levels
Potential Hydrogen (pH) is the concentration of protons “H” in a solution. Different studies have found that healthy skin has a pH value between 4 and 5.9 depending on body position, health and age.
ABENA’s philosophy is to minimise or remove chemicals in products wherever possible. ABENA incontinence products have textile pH values of between 5.3 and 6.4 and will return to that state after urine is absorbed in the product core.

ABENA San Premium
ABENA San Premium is a range of anatomically shaped, high-performance incontinence products ranging from light to very heavy incontinence. Sizes 1 to 4 are thinner in design and fitted with an adhesive strip that secures the aid to underwear They are suitable for those who experience light to moderate incontinence. Sizes 5 to 11 have a higher absorbency capacity and should be used with fixation pants for moderate to high incontinence.
ABENA San Bariatric
The ABENA San Bariatric aid is designed for the larger individual. This aid is longer, wider and features high leakage barriers to provide greater security for all body shapes.
ABENA San Special
ABENA San Special is an anatomically shaped aid specifically designed for faecal incontinence. This aid will also provide effective absorbency for urinary incontinence.

One size fits all thin mesh fixation pants designed to support anatomically shaped continence aids. Made of 88% polyester and 12% elastane. Can be washed up to 20 times.

Fitted with 360° leakage barriers and curved elastics, this range is great for demanding situations and bedridden users. Features high quality combi tapes for optimum fit and repositioning.

ABENA Let Boosters
ABENA Let Boosters are anatomically shaped multi-purpose aids which can be used to boost the capacity of a primary continence aid or for faecal ooze. These boosters are equipped with a permeable backing to enable excess liquid to be wicked in the primary aid.

Covers every need in daily hygiene and care. Washing liquid contains only mild, active ingredients, as well as nourishing components that prevent the skin from drying out.
Wash without Water
A convenient alternative to soap and water. Hygienic and time-saving solution. Contains active ingredients that neutralise perspiration salts and body odours.
