venture out

We know you’re going to love your bunnyhome so much that staying in will always be a joy, but with so much on your doorstep at Bodmin you’ll want to venture out — occasionally!

Sustainable travel

Whether you’re going out and about for work, school or leisure, it’s in all our interests to use the most sustainable methods of transport we can.

As part of our beautiful county’s drive to meet sustainable travel targets, we’re doing our bit to help by creating this local travel information brochure, especially for our Watchmakers residents, to raise awareness of local services, facilities and sustainable travel options.

If we all change our travel habits even slightly by walking, cycling, using public transport, or even car-sharing or home-

working where we can, it will make a big difference to us personally, and to the planet:

• Reduce travel costs

• Increase fitness & reduce stress

• Lower carbon emissions = a cleaner environment

• Fewer jams — beat the morning traffic

• Improve road safety

Why not share your journey with a friend, neighbour or colleague?

The benefits of walking:

• It’s free!

• You can do it with friends & family

• Improves health & fitness

• Reduces stress

• Increases productivity

• Improves sleep

• No equipment needed

• Helps the environment

• Zero carbon emissions

cycling

Bodmin is well placed for both leisure cycling and commuting by bike Bike & ride

You’ve heard of Park and Ride, but have you ever thought about Bike and Ride? For commuting trips, even if you can’t cycle the whole way to work, perhaps you could consider cycling some of the way and using public transport for the remaining journey.

Access to the Camel Trail is available approximately 2.0km (1.3 miles) to the west, which routes along a disused railway line following the course of the Camel Estuary between Wenfordbridge, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow. The section from Padstow to Wadebridge and then Wadebridge to Dunmere forms part of the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 32. At Dunmere, the route forms part of NCN Route 3 which continues either east towards Bodmin or north towards Wenfordbridge. Have a look at the Cornwall Council Cycle Maps for inspiration :- (www.cornwall. gov.uk/environment-and-planning/ countryside/cycle-routes-andtrails/)

by bus

Why not take advantage of the excellent links that your local bus services provide?

The No. 11 service provides services (twice hourly) between Padstow and Plymouth whilst the No. 26 service provide regular services (hourly) between Bodmin and St Austell. The buses are accessible for people with mobility issues, comfortable and modern, and provide an excellent link to the surrounding areas.

There are many advantages to using local bus services. It allows for many people to share trips they might otherwise make individually by car.

Bus stops

Your nearest bus stops are less than a five-minute walk away and therefore a suitable distance for everyone, even people with mobility difficulties.

10

by train

For sustainable travel further afield, you can’t beat the train, and Bodmin Parkway is just under 4 miles away.

Easy access

Bodmin Parkway is the closest access point to the rail network located approximately 6.0km (3.8 miles) to the south-east of the site.

The station is managed by Great Western Railway (GWR) and is situated on the Cornish Main Line that extends between Penzance and London Paddington.

Reliable service

Relax in comfort when you travel on the Great Western Railway, knowing you’re taking one of the fastest, most direct, low-carbon modes of transport for your journey.

Tickets & timetables

You can buy single or day return tickets at the station ticket office, from a machine on the platform or book in advance online. For regular travellers, weekly, monthly or annual season tickets are available. Did you know you can save up to 75% if you book a few weeks ahead?

driving

On occasions when you have to take the car, how can you reduce your carbon footprint?

12

electric cars

Walking, cycling and using public transport might not work for all journeys, so why not go electric?

If you have to drive but you’re keen to get your carbon footprint down, an electric car is a great sustainable option, generating zero or reduced emissions. Apart from the obvious environmental benefits, running an electric car is a lot cheaper than a conventional car too.

At bunnyhomes we’re keen to help drive down CO2 emissions by providing charging points for electric cars and bikes at your

home at Watchmaker’s. While out and about, there are more and more charging points cropping up everywhere, from fuel stations to service stations. Just grab the ‘Zap-map’ app to see locations near you.

EV charging points

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be wall-mounted for houses and post-mounted for shared car spaces.

taxis & car sharing

Taking a taxi and car sharing are the most sustainable ways to travel by car.

Parnells Taxis Ltd is located on Cooksland Industrial Estate and provides a diverse fleet of vehicles. Online bookings are available via www.parnellstaxis.co.uk or their own app available on both Android and iOS.

It’s good to share

Cornwall’s own car sharing website (www.pastyconnection.com) links drivers and pasengers to share their journey and is also available to download as an app on both Andriod and iOS.

• It reduces the number of cars on the roads, resulting in less congestion, less pollution and fewer parking problems

• It provides a real solution to the transport problems of rural areas like Devon

• Opportunity to socialise

• Useful for people with mobility difficulties

• Reduced fuel costs

• Time to relax without driving stress

mobility

People with mobility issues who are unable to walk or cycle sufficient distances will be able to access services and facilities further afield by opting to use a scooter or powered wheelchair.

The roads and footways from the site towards Bodmin town centre and the local services and facilities within the area are suitable to accommodate scooters and powered wheelchairs.

Useful resources

• Information regarding all-inclusive leasing packages for scooters and powered wheelchairs through a mobility scheme is available from the Motability Operations Ltd.

get more miles for your money

You can save money and fuel, which in turn reduces carbon emissions, creating a cleaner, healthier environment by considering the following:

• Service your car regularly to maintain engine efficiency.

• Check your tyre pressures regularly (and before long journeys). Under inflated tyres use more fuel as they increase rolling resistance.

• Lose any unnecessary baggage. Extra weight, means more fuel.

• Combine short trips. Cold starts use more fuel.

Home shopping

• Drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid any unnecessary braking.

• Cut down use of air-conditioning. It increases fuel consumption at low speeds (the effects are less noticeable at high speeds).

• Stick to the speed limits. Faster driving uses more fuel.

We all love the social side of a shopping trip, but to cut down on emissions some shopping can be done from the comfort of your own home using online ordering, ‘Shop & Drop’ and ‘Click & Collect’ options.
