WATER WORKS

Welcome!

A showerhead upgrade can elevate your bathroom’s look as well as functionality. Make the switch from a small dripping rose to a multifunction wide sprayer in an afternoon, or hire a licensed plumber to retrofit a full rail shower set-up. Be inspired by these stylish choices.

R

ugs are one of your styling best friends. Brilliant multitaskers, they bring in colour, texture and warmth, help to define different zones in an open-plan room and protect your floors; it’s a lot easier to vacuum or shampoo a rug than it is to refinish scratched timber. To get the size of a rug right, measure your space carefully – perhaps lay a drop sheet on the floor to get a sense

of how it will look – before you head in store. For more tips, see Winter warming from page 13. With WFH, many of us may have turned a guest room over to a home office but, if you have a lot of visitors, you need a room that can be easily switched back. We’re sharing some ideas in From spare room to study, from page 22.

Weekend upcycle

Bunnings magazine reader Lois, from NSW, upcycled an old bike she had hidden away in her backyard, attaching five hanging planter boxes to create a delightfully decorative plant stand. The reimagined bike is now a sweet, quirky flower garden that’s easy to reach, maintain and replant with seasonal colour.

“If a rug seems too beautiful to stand on, why not use it as art?” Samantha Pointon, stylist

HANG A RUG TOOLS & MATERIALS nS afety equipment (eye and ear protection) n Handsaw n 2400mm length 25mm dowel n Tape measure n Level n Stud finder n Combination square and pencil n Two Zenith ‘SureHook’ 125mm 25kg timber frame picture hanging rails n Screwdriver n Masking tape n Scissors n 12mm high-bond double-sided tape n Staple gun with 10mm staples 1 To hang a rug on a plasterboard wall, use a handsaw to cut a length of 25mm dowel to match the length of the rug. Using a tape measure with a level, mask out where the rug will hang on the wall. Use a stud finder to locate any wall studs along the top, marking with a pencil.

BELOW LEFT 230cm x 160cm circular knit polyester rug in Beige with tassels, $129, I/N: 0339902. ‘Renaissance’ 230cm x 160cm polyester rug in Caspian, $99, I/N: 0229720. ‘France’ 230cm x 160cm polypropylene rug in Cream, $129, I/N: 0102816. Book, stylist’s own. BELOW Circular knit polyester rug in Beige with tassels and ‘Renaissance’ polyester rug in Caspian, as before. 230cm x 160cm circular knit polyester rug in Ivory, $129, I/N: 0339900. Cushion, Adairs. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

2 With a combination square and pencil, mark a line along the dowel. Centre the frame hanging section of the rails 400mm in from the ends, marking and pre-drilling the holes with a 2.5mm bit and securing the supplied screws with a screwdriver. 3 Position the wall hanging rails against the wall, 400mm in from either side, marking the holes 50mm down from the top. Install supplied anchors or pre-drill into wall studs and secure with supplied screws, checking the channel part of the rail is at the top. 4 To attach the rug, working from the back, run a length of 12mm double-sided tape along the top, then secure it along the dowel, with the edge of the rug running along the side of the rails with the holes. Staple along the edge of the rug into the dowel with 10mm staples. 5 Lift the assembly into position against the wall, with the hanging rails interlocked over the wall hanging rails. Check the rug hangs straight and push the bed into position. Tip: To hang the rug on a brick wall, use masonry anchors and screws to attach wall hanging rails, avoiding the mortar joints. Find out the weight of your rug to ensure the fixings are suitable for the load and your type of wall. Never place a rug over or near a heat source, nor above babies’, toddlers’ or children’s beds. Regularly check the rug isn’t pulling away from the dowel and at risk of falling down.

Place the grill on the barbecue, close the lid and preheat for 10 mins. 4 Cook salmon in covered barbecue for 1 hour using low indirect heat. Brush salmon with half the maple syrup. Cook for a further 30 mins or until cooked through. Transfer to a large plate. Brush salmon with the remaining maple syrup. Use a fork to coarsely flake the salmon, discarding the skin. 5 Meanwhile, cook rice following packet instructions on the side burner, adding snow peas for the last 1 min. Cool. Combine rice mixture, cucumber, bean sprouts, spring onion, coriander and chilli, if using, in a large bowl. Whisk vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil and caster sugar in a small bowl. Drizzle half the vinegar mixture over the rice mixture. 6 Arrange rice mixture on a serving platter. Top with salmon and drizzle with remaining vinegar mixture. Serve.

up to 75 days, depending on conditions. For larger areas, such as bathrooms and storage units, the disposable tub unit can absorb more than four litres of moisture over 12 months. For shelves, windowsills and pantries, the neat slimline unit will fit right in; it lasts up to 45 days and can be easily refilled.

Removing moisture and humidity will help keep musty bathroom smells at bay

Magnets for moisture Help keep mould, mildew and fungus out of your home with the DampFree range of moisture absorbers

P

reventing condensation and moisture from gathering around the home is easy when you let clever products do the work for you.

SUPER SOAKERS DampFree products are filled with moisture-absorbing crystals, made using a non-toxic and septic-safe formula. These moisture magnets soak up humidity and dampness, reducing mildew, mould and fungus, as well eliminating the musty odours they cause. As the crystals pull in moisture from the air, they simply dissolve, making them easy to discard and top up using the refill crystals or pouches.

SENSITIVE CHOICE DampFree products can also help reduce allergens that contribute to

asthma and allergies, and DampFree is an approved partner of the National Asthma Council Australia and Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ’s Sensitive Choice program. The ‘blue butterfly’ symbol shown on products indicates that they have been independently assessed and approved to be allergy-aware.

HIDDEN HEROES Ever gone to pack for a holiday only to find your favourite bag has been stricken by mould? It’s a common occurrence, especially in more humid climates. Luckily, the DampFree range comes in a range of shapes and sizes to let you cut the condensation in every corner of your home. The hanging pouch is perfect for wardrobes and other small, enclosed spaces. It’ll last

WINTER WARMTH

SNUG AS A BUG

Ceiling insulation

THERE’S PLENTY YOU CAN DO TO ENSURE YOUR HOME STAYS COSY THROUGHOUT THE COOLER MONTHS

Words KYLIE JACKES

Y

our home needs to deliver maximum comfort when the mercury drops. Build it in with these must-haves for a toasty haven.

Full of energy

Good insulation is one of the best ways to have a stable temperature inside your home, and improve energy efficiency year-round. “There’s a range of insulation products suitable for pitched roofs, ceilings, external walls, internal partitions and underfloor, which work as a thermal barrier to prevent heat escaping in winter and entering in summer, and provide acoustic benefits,” says James Bedford of Knauf Insulation (Earthwool). When choosing insulation batts, make sure you select the right product for the job and look at the R-value. “The higher the R-value, the better the insulation will perform at resisting heat flow,” explains James. Some products can be installed by a confident DIYer, but it’s essential to wear the correct protective equipment and follow safety instructions carefully.

Floor show

Before deciding on flooring, consider the material’s thermal mass – that is,

its ability to store heat and radiate it back. Low-mass floors, such as timber, tend to heat up faster than high-mass materials like concrete, tile and stone. But once they’re warm, high-mass floors retain heat longer. For tiled floors, an undertile heating kit lays the foundation for programmable heat at the flick of a switch, ideal in the bathroom on chilly mornings.

Window of opportunity

significant amount of a home’s heat A gain and loss is through windows, so if you’re building or tackling a major reno, plan orientation and window placement carefully. To maximise the benefits of winter sun, it’s often ideal to have the kitchen and living areas facing north, and include large windows and glazed doors where possible. To minimise heat loss, use smaller windows on south-facing walls and add double glazing throughout. “The benefit of double-glazed windows and doors comes from the sealed air gap, which sits between two panes of glass and acts as an extra barrier to help prevent heat escaping from your home during winter,” explains Sean Keogh of Hartman Group (supplier of Polar Eco-View windows and doors).

Assess your home and make changes – some DIY – to maintain warmth inside when it’s chilly out

Drape expectations

Consider full-length, quality curtains, roller blinds or plantation shutters you can open during the day to embrace the sun’s warmth. Closing them before the temperature drops outside will help create a cocooning effect. As a general guide, the thicker the window covering, the more insulation it provides. Underfloor insulation Cosy rug shutters are also wonderfully insulating. Martin Wilson of EasyAs Shutters explains, “Our plantation shutters, made from non-toxic PVC, have solid blades that help contain heat in a warm room, making them a great option if you’re looking to improve your home’s thermal efficiency.” If you want to go one step further, consider exterior shutters. “Aluminium plantation shutters with rotating blades can be installed as sliding

FIVE COSY FIXES

Dial up the heat in your existing home with these quick and easy tips. 1 Block draughts Identify gaps around windows, door frames and cladding. Attaching a door brush strip seal or placing a few draught stoppers where you need them is also useful to block chilly winds. 2 Rug up Choose area rugs large enough to run around the perimeter of your bed and anchor living room sofas and chairs. Lay hallway runners and add doormats to entries. 3 Reverse your fan Opt for a model with a winter setting. This changes the direction of the blades, so they turn clockwise, which helps push warm air back down towards the floor. 4 Shut doors Closing the door to unused rooms or zones like the bathroom and laundry will help heat the rest of your home more quickly and efficiently. 5 Upgrade insulation If you’ve got an older home, assess whether ceiling insulation could be topped up or replaced with batts with a higher R-value, to improve effectiveness.

Turn up the heat

There’s a wide selection of heaters, from woodburners to realistic gas log or electric fireplaces. Reverse cycle airconditioners have a thermostat to set the desired temperature, warming the whole room, plus you can use them for cooling in summer. When choosing, consider the size of the space you plan to heat, running costs, energy efficiency, heat output and requirements such as a flue and professional installation. Radiant heaters produce a direct heat that warms the immediate area, whereas convection models typically heat air and use a fan to redistribute it into the room – a good choice for larger areas.

ighting is a vital element of any home design, affecting not only functionality, but also mood. Get to know the different types, and what works where, for an interior that looks and feels the way you want it.

Plan your approach

Looking down

Downlights (also known as recessed lights) are an unobtrusive way to illuminate large living areas and, depending on their position, can also work as task lighting. Avoid using them for all your lighting needs, though – too many in one space can make it feel bare and uninviting. Mix it up with other forms and add dimmers to crank up the ambience.

Off the wall

“Sconce lighting [wall lighting] is huge right now, and they’re not just for hallways,” says Sharon Breeze of Brilliant Lighting. “Consider using them as bedside lights, a statement for either side of the fireplace or vanity, or on side walls for ambient mood lighting.”

“Avoid including pendant lights in traffic areas or above moveable furniture, as they tend to hang quite low and can become a safety issue” James Treble, interior designer

Keep in mind... n Hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie.

Adjustable wall-mounted lamps are a great choice for a reading corner

On any build or renovation, lighting placement must be considered early, says interior designer James Treble (jamestreble.com), not just because an electrical fit-out is much easier before the walls and ceilings are finished. “Creating a successful and practical lighting plan requires consideration of important issues such as how you will live in your home, and how each room will be used,” says James. “Most importantly, ensure you include a well-balanced mix of the different lighting types: ambient, task and feature (or accent).”

In this study nook, strip lighting under the shelf is supplemented by a desk lamp

Take it to task

Designed to aid specific activities, task lighting is brighter and more targeted, for cooking or reading, or for safety and security. Think lighting above the cooktop, under-cabinet strip lighting and downlights for kitchens to help prepare food, or step lighting for stairs. Task lamps are ideal for the desk in a home office, or for a living room reading corner – this is where a floor lamp comes into its own.

WARM AND COOL GLOBES Using pendants instead of bedside lamps frees up space in bedrooms

In suspense

Pendants (hanging lights) bring character into a home, says Sharon. “They can form a wonderful canopy, as well as task lighting, for your kitchen bench – fit with warm colour temperature globes for casual bench dinners or chats over a cup of tea,” she suggests. A statement pendant over a dining table creates an intimate atmosphere, while in bedrooms they are an elegant space saver. “I often incorporate pendant lights above

bedside tables – they not only add drama and class to a bedroom, but they allow the bedside tables to be left clutter free,” explains James. As long as pendants are not positioned close to water outlets, they can work well in bathrooms, too. “One pendant light to the side of the basin adds personality – it’s perfect for a powder room,” says James. “One on either side of a vanity mirror provides balanced lighting that’s perfect for applying make-up, shaving or pampering.”

Warm light creates a cosy glow, enhances a room’s atmosphere and is great for bedrooms and dining areas. White or cool light has a cleaner, cooler look and is said to help energise an area, so is ideal for a workspace. Bathrooms benefit from a mix: a cooler light near the vanity for shaving or applying make-up, plus a warm lighting option for when you want a relaxing soak. Light temperature is measured in kelvin (K), typically ranging from 2700K (soft, warm) to 6500K (cool daylight).

“Groups of three, five or even seven pendants hung at various heights always look fantastic in stairwells” Sharon Breeze, Brilliant Lighting

Accent lighting is used to emphasise and bring prominence to a specific feature or detail, making these pieces the focal point in the room, explains the lighting team at Mercator: “Details that are often highlighted with accent lighting include architectural elements like feature walls, framed pictures, artwork or ornaments,” they say. Accent lighting can help fill a style void in a home or boost the look of an existing space. “Accent or feature light pieces are the perfect addition in an entry foyer, above a stair void and above a dining table – the reason they work so well is that they draw attention to the space and elevate their importance, literally ‘highlighting’ them,” says James Treble. bunnings |

It’s all in the air

The Samsung air purifier is designed to operate quietly and not disturb sleep

Improve your home with clean air set to the perfect temperature, thanks to clever solutions from Samsung Use the Samsung air conditioner’s ‘Good Sleep Mode’ function to set your preferred night-time climate

C

reating a warm and welcoming atmosphere inside your home goes beyond placing fresh flowers in the hall. The most important element can’t be seen; it’s in the air. From allergens and pollutants to the temperature, the quality of air inside is key to a comfortable home.

BREATHE AND SLEEP EASY Pollen, pet dander, mould and exhaust fumes are common contaminators inside homes. But clearing the air is easy with a Samsung AX40T air purifier. A HEPA filter removes 99.97 per cent of ultra-fine dust and reduces the spread of certain captured bacteria*, while a four-colour indicator lets you monitor air pollution. Worried about asthma and allergies? The air purifier has been recognised by the National Asthma Council of Australia for its air cleansing potential, and has Sensitive Choice accreditation. It can also help support good sleep, with a Sleep Mode function that turns display lights off and runs at a quiet 20dBa noise level for peaceful nights.

indoor unit is designed to maintain your room’s temperature while using very little energy. The latest technology keeps your home toasty all winter long (while also cooling it fast on unexpectedly warm days). The Easy Filter Plus captures dust, while its

anti-bacterial coating helps to reduce certain airborne contaminants^. An auto-clean function dries off any moisture within the heat exchange to minimise the growth of bacteria inside and help ensure clean air is never compromised.

CLIMATE CONTROL As the seasons change, a split-system air conditioning unit can help keep your home comfortable in any weather. Lights

Smart lights and light globes let you set the mood by changing their colour, shade and brightness. You can also connect them to sensors and put them on timers so the house looks lived-in while you’re away. Smart assistants are clever enough to know which room your lights are in, so you can say “Turn off the lights” as you leave a room or “Turn off all the lights” at bedtime.

SMART MOVES

CHECK OUT THE TECH GIZMOS THAT CAN ACTUALLY IMPROVE YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE Words ADAM TURNER

T

he latest smart home gadgets are designed to genuinely make your life easier. From speakers and lights, to security cameras and locks, there’s a gadget for every room and every occasion. Here are our top picks for your shopping list.

1

Speakers

The real trick is uniting smart devices into a truly smart home, says Alex Kidman, co-host of the podcast Vertical Hold: Behind the Tech News. The modern home is built around smart speakers from the likes of Google, Apple and Amazon. These bring to life smart assistants like Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. If you already own Amazon Echo, Google Nest or Apple

HomePod speakers with a built-in smart assistant, look for compatible gadgets. “This way you’re not tied to a single brand of smart home gear – you can mix and match if it’s all compatible with your smart assistant,” explains Alex. “Think of your smart assistant like a digital butler which orders around your other smart devices, so you’re not constantly reaching for your smartphone – simply tell your assistant to turn up the music or turn down the lights, and it takes care of the rest.”

Sensors

Smart sensors notify you when something moves, or a door or window opens, and can be used for security or to trigger events, like turning on a smart device. It’s important to fine-tune the sensor’s sensitivity, says Alex. “While you definitely want to know if criminals are about, you don’t want your phone to ping every time a cat crosses your yard or a magpie flies through the carport!”

4

Plugs

Smart plugs turn any device into a smart device, so you can control it from afar. Setting them up is simple; for example, plug your bedside lamp into a smart plug, and the smart plug into the wall, and always leave the lamp and wall switch turned on. To control the lamp, ask your smart assistant to turn the plug on and off.

Security cameras

Smart cameras are an invaluable security tool, instantly letting you know when something is awry. They can be installed inside and outside, with battery- and solar-powered options for hard-toreach places. “You can see the view from your cameras on the smart screens around your home, or on your smartphone even when you’re out,” says Leigh Stark, editor of tech news site pickr.com.au. “Along with spotting uninvited guests, they’re great for checking on children and pets.” Many cameras have a built-in speaker and microphone, handy for giving instructions to couriers or tradies.

6

5

4

Doorbells

Smart doorbells send smartphone notifications when someone presses the button, so you can check who’s at the door and talk to them. Some can even tell you when someone leaves a parcel but doesn’t ring the bell. Doorbells may be battery-powered or wired in. “Choose with care, as you might need a licensed electrician,” says Alex. “Rechargeable smart doorbells are handy if you’re renting.”

7

3

Door locks

Smart locks can be retrofitted to your door. To get inside, you enter a code or simply wave your smartphone at the lock. “These clever locks don’t just offer the convenience of unlocking the door when your hands are full,” says Leigh. “Some let you securely share access to your home with other people, giving them a code to punch in, rather than a physical key. With a smart lock, you can check whether your loved ones have returned home safely, as well as know exactly when anyone else unlocks the door.” 42 bunnings.com.au |

Double vanities mean you’ll never wait for basin access again

Talk to tradies

A new bathroom or extensive remodel will require a plumber, electrician, waterproofer (in certain states), tiler and possibly a builder and/or carpenter. So it’s important to have a clear budget in mind and discuss it with your tradies. “Understand your current pain points – is the existing configuration and layout of your bathroom not working? Are the tiles and products simply outdated and tired? Do you have a style in mind and have identified some products or tiles that you like?” says Luke Di Michiel of Caroma. “Engaging early with a plumber will allow you to explore options and associated costs and timing upfront, better preparing you for decision making and to achieve the best possible outcome.” Impeccable planning also means having tradies in line and on time when needed, which helps prevent delays and increased costs.

Keep the layout

When renovating, retaining the same bathroom footprint and rough layout can save you big bucks. Keep load-bearing walls where they are, and try to avoid moving the location of plumbing or electrical fixtures. If you can keep all the plumbing fixtures to one wall, even better, as more walls with plumbing pipes means more cost to you. This is another area where talking to your tradies is invaluable, as they’ll give you a real idea of what your proposed changes might cost, and whether there might be workable alternatives.

A wall-replacement hack is to use V-groove wall lining, which can simply be painted, rather than having to be plastered first Keep in mind... Plumbing, waterproofing (in certain states) and electrical works must be done by a licensed tradie.

Big-ticket items will eat up a large portion of your budget – and can be worth it – but there are ways to cut costs, without compromising on style. Vanity If your vanity can’t be revived, this is an item to invest in. “Replacing your old vanity with a new one will instantly make your bathroom feel like it’s had a full renovation,” says Andy Grigor of Methven. “A wall-mounted floating vanity will also open up the feel of a small bathroom space by adding more floor area.”

FAST FIXES

If a full bathroom renovation is out of financial reach at the moment, try these quick changes. Replace your taps and shower “Choosing a shower and tapware that looks stunning will convert your bathroom into a room you can’t wait to use,” says Andy. Select the basin mixer first, and then your shower and bathroom accessories with complementary shapes to create a cohesive look. Tackle old grout and silicone Tatty, discoloured grout and silicone can really age a bathroom. If the tiles are in good condition, removing and replacing the grout will help to give the whole room a fresh, clean look. Accessorise! Splash out on chic soap dispensers, replace the shower curtain, buy a set of plush towels and add some greenery and candles – these all make a big difference.

Forme ‘What-A-Waste’ 110mm x 110mm floor drain tile insert, $39, I/N: 5003374†. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Tiles Give tiles a facelift, rather than a complete overhaul. Replace chipped, cracked or otherwise broken tiles and, if they’re in good nick but the pattern isn’t, consider painting over them. If they need to go, you could tile just the wet zones, such as the shower, around the bath and behind the vanity, and paint the remaining areas. For a wholesale change, ceramic wall and floor tiles are relatively affordable and durable. Inexpensive rectangular tiles can work harder if laid in brick bond, vertical or herringbone patterns, while a simple finish of coloured grout can lift the style factor of a plain white tile.

Electricals Focus on the practical necessities. Prioritise lighting options for daily tasks, such as shaving or putting on make-up. Always invest in good ventilation, which will help prevent mildew, mould and odours. If there’s room in your budget, a heated towel rail will help to dry towels and warm the bathroom. Toilet A quality loo is worth spending on, not only improving the look of a space, but also paying dividends in ease of living and water usage (look to the WELS star rating, which measures water efficiency; the more stars, the more efficient the product).

If the budget is tight, consider whether existing elements can be kept or reinvented to suit the new-look space. Revive the vanity If your existing vanity is structurally sound, it could be revamped with specialist paint and new drawer pulls. Or splurge on a new basin and countertop for a stunning modern makeover. Upcycling an old dresser or console as a vanity is a great idea and creates a one-of-akind statement. If you’re exploring this option, Andy Grigor cautions, keep in mind the size of the area and plumbing needs. Power of paint From the floors to the ceiling, the vanity to the bathtub, a coat of paint can transform the space. Make sure areas to be painted

are clean and free of mould and mildew, and choose specialist paint suitable for a wet space and appropriate for the surface.

Find the right floor

Ceramic tiles For an economical and hardy flooring choice, these can imitate luxurious stone – granite, slate and even marble – for a fraction of the price. Hybrid flooring (laminate flooring with a waterproof core) is a cost-conscious pick, and allows you to get the visual warmth and tactile beauty of timber floorboards in areas that normally wouldn’t allow it. Vinyl can imitate all sorts of high-end materials, from timber to concrete, stone and tiles.

KITCHEN SOLUTIONS

STRUGGLING WITH YOUR KITCHEN? HERE ARE A FEW TYPICAL DILEMMAS – AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT THEM Words HOLLY BYRNE

A Using both sides of an island bench can significantly boost your kitchen’s storage capacity

lack of storage is one of the main problems in kitchen design, but not the only one – among others are lingering odours and the search for a power source. “The most common dilemmas usually stem from planning,” says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. Here’s how to tackle those issues.

PROBLEM Cramping your style

PROBLEM Lack of lighting

Many older homes have small, gloomy kitchens, but there’s still plenty to work with in a renovation. “First, use light-coloured cabinetry to help open up the space,” suggests interior designer Sarah Comerford (homebybelle.com.au). Plus, “Avoid patterns in splashback tiles or bench accessories,” advises interior designer Amanda Wyeth (amandawyeth.com). “Pattern can make smaller spaces appear unnecessarily cluttered.”

“If you’re often preparing food in your own shadow or finding it hard to read package instructions and recipe books, it’s a sign of bad lighting,” says Amanda. It can also be a hazard with hot pots and sharp knives about. Task lighting is needed for reading and food prep; this could be LED strips under wall-mounted cabinetry to light the bench, and downlights, track lights or pendants (that cast a downward glow) over an island.

PROBLEM Short on storage

As a key component of a wellfunctioning space, storage requires good planning. “Start by utilising drawers over door cabinets where possible,” says Monique Parker. They are easier to organise and access. “Wireware is also a must,” she adds. Narrow pull-out baskets can transform gaps between appliances as well as cabinets into spice racks, and pullout shelves can revive a pantry. 54 bunnings.com.au |

4 PROBLEM Appliance overload

“There is so much choice for appliances, but not all kitchens have the space or layout to facilitate them all,” says Sarah. “Think about how you live and find the right balance on what gadgets to include.” Amanda advocates for multitasking appliances such as a compact combination microwave oven that can also bake and roast.

PROBLEM Rubbish underfoot

Getting your bin placement wrong can lead to a messy (and smelly) trip hazard. “Integrated bins not only clear up precious floor space, but they conceal odours and can be placed next to your sink for convenience,” says Monique. There’s an option for just about every size of space, including door mount, undersink swing bins and in-drawer styles.

9 PROBLEM Odour outrage

From fried garlic to burnt toast, some smells fill the entire home. “Do not underestimate the importance of a good-quality (low noise-emitting) rangehood,” says Amanda. “Positioning your stovetop to ensure your rangehood can be externally vented ensures cooking smells and fine oil particles are fully extracted and don’t gather and linger.” Consult your builder or kitchen installer about ducting and venting. For many, a recirculating rangehood is the only option. In this case, buy the best you can afford.

If you’re caring for potted herbs indoors, position on a north-facing windowsill for maximum winter sun

Garden smarter, not harder

Have you ever noticed pockets in the garden that are warmer than others? These microclimates may be naturally occurring, such as warmth radiating from a wall. For growing success in the cooler months, plant in one of these areas, perhaps in a sunny spot next to a brick wall, fence or shed. These surfaces absorb heat during the day but release it at night, so plants stay warmer than in the rest of the garden. Where possible, horticulturist BonnieMarie Hibbs (thegardenersnotebook. com.au) recommends rearing herbs in containers. “Growing herbs in pots allows you to have better control over their environment,” she says. “They can be moved indoors to a brightly lit area or under shelter where they are less likely to be exposed to cold elements.” Bonnie-Marie also advises watering less in winter. “As temperatures drop, plants naturally start to slow down and require less feeding and watering throughout the season,” she says. If rainfall is unusually high, move potted herbs to a more protected location.

Take it inside

Choose wisely

Many herbs are tolerant of mild winters, but in areas where the mercury really dips, they can succumb to cold damage. Choosing ones that are tolerant of cold conditions is a good start. “Tough perennial herbs such as rosemary, chives, sage, 60 bunnings.com.au |

oregano and thyme can be overwintered in the garden,” says Dana. Coriander, parsley, dill and winter savoury will also grow well in cool conditions. But don’t over pick. “Growth is slower at this time of the year, so spread out the harvest to help prolong the season,” adds Dana. In cold climates, it’s best to avoid planting cold-tender plants such as sweet basil or lemon verbena. Leave them for spring and summer, or try in a warm spot indoors.

bunnings

Move and protect

For cold-tender plants in established beds, provide some form of frost protection. “Cover them with frost cloth when a cold snap is expected,” says Bonnie-Marie. “This will help prevent frost from settling on the foliage.” If any plants are affected, she suggests gently hosing foliage with tap water before it is exposed to sunlight: “Doing this will melt the ice off plants, leaving minimal damage.” A thick layer of organic mulch can also help reduce cold damage. Apply it generously around plants, keeping it away from stems to avoid rotting, and rake it back during the day to allow the sun to warm the soil. Replacing it at night ensures the heat remains trapped, keeping the roots cosy.

Photography Getty Images. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

Herbs can also be successfully grown indoors for a short period of time. “Placing pots near a warm, bright window will keep them healthier and growing for longer,” says BonnieMarie. “Another solution is to invest in a greenhouse, where plants can be left to establish and thrive all year round.” Horticulturist Dana Bolton of Mr Fothergill’s suggests using an indoor hydroponic system. “With the flick of a switch, you can grow cold-sensitive herbs like basil during autumn and winter,” she says. The Veritable range by Mr Fothergill’s is equipped with everything you need, including an LED light and growing media.

Horticulturist Melissa King explains how to grow beautiful roses in pots

or sheer wow factor in the garden, it’s hard to beat roses, with their magnificent showy flowers, sweet perfume and hardy versatility. From flowering shrubs to groundcovers, miniatures, standards and climbers, there is a rose for every garden – and with a great selection of varieties now in store, it’s the perfect time to create your own Insta-worthy paradise.

the rose so that it’s planted at the same height as it was in the grower’s pot. Backfill with potting mix and water well.

A twice-yearly dose of Scotts Osmocote Rose, Gardenia & Azalea Controlled Release Fertiliser helps potted roses continue to thrive

WELL WATERED

GROWING IN POTS

Keep newly planted roses thoroughly watered for the first few months until they are well established. Roses prefer a regular, deep soak, rather than a light sprinkling. To reduce the risk of fungal disease, water your plants at the root zone, not over the foliage. Also, try to water first thing in the morning – water left to sit on foliage overnight can encourage fungal disease. Once established, roses are remarkably tolerant of dry conditions.

After you’ve picked the perfect pot (at least 50cm diameter), partly fill it with Scotts Osmocote Rose, Gardenia & Azalea Premium Potting Mix. This has been uniquely formulated with a slightly acidic pH and has boosted levels of iron and magnesium to produce lush, deep green leaves, while helping eliminate yellowing and the premature drop of rose buds. Then, dig a planting hole a little bigger than the root ball. Position

In early spring, give your roses a good dose of Scotts Osmocote Rose, Gardenia & Azalea Controlled Release Fertiliser to promote vigorous, healthy growth and masses of stunning flowers. Give repeat flowering roses another boost with Scotts Osmocote in late summer to promote wonderful autumn displays.

HERE COMES THE SUN Roses love to be planted in bright sunny spots – about six hours of sunlight a day is ideal. For beautiful, long-lasting displays, position them in an area protected from strong winds.

DO IT

GARDEN JOBS

Chloe also recommends spreading organic mulch over any bare spots. “This will help insulate the soil from the cold weather,” she says.

Search and destroy

Check the garden for any dead or dying plants. Their weakened state makes them more susceptible to pests and diseases, so remove and put in the compost or green waste bins. Also tidy up perennial shrubs and remove diseased plant growth, says Sue Edwards of Seasol. “Deadhead spent blooms and cut off foliage affected by black spot or mildew to prevent further spread,” she says. But don’t add diseased foliage to the compost.

Weed and reap

“Remove emerging weeds before they mature – ensure you take out the entire weed including the roots,” says Sue. “Hand weeding can be very effective for small areas, but large areas call for a garden hoe.” If weeds are numerous, consider an organic weedkiller spray – but take care when using around valuable plants.

Waste not, want not

Fruit and vegie scraps, cardboard, newspaper, fallen leaves, lawn clippings and non-diseased garden trimmings can all be added to the compost. To aerate it and improve the rate of decomposition, regularly turn the heap with a garden fork; if your compost is in a static bin, using a compost aerating tool might be easier. Rotating a tumbler often will help to accelerate the breakdown.

Mischief managed

“Now is a great time to take stock of your garden shed,” says Sue. “Remove old pots, empty bags of potting mix into existing garden beds and spread mulch around the garden.” Give it a good sweep so it’s ready for activity once warmer weather arrives. Compost is a great soil conditioner – dig it into garden beds when it’s become crumbly and dark brown

Go to ground

To cultivate a robust base, organic matter is key, says horticulturist Chloe Foster (@fosteryourgarden). “Top up existing and recently cleared garden beds with organic matter,” she says. This may be in the form of compost, blood and bone or aged animal manures. As they break down, they improve soil structure and moisture retention. Plus, nutrients are slowly released, giving plants a gentle feed.

Tackle your garden tools

“Use steel wool and methylated spirits to clean and disinfect your secateur blades,” says Chloe. Follow up with a whetstone or diamond sharpener to keep edges sharp, and spray moving parts – for example springs and blades – with a lubricating oil. To maintain larger tools, such as spades, shovels and hoes, remove dirt from surfaces and use a metal file to sharpen the edges. “Apply linseed oil to the handles as this will help extend the life of the timber,” adds Chloe.

Keep in mind... Always wear a mask and gloves when handling compost, mulch or potting mix. n If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. n Store all garden chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. n Take care when sharpening equipment with blades, and make sure sharp garden tools are safely stored where children can’t reach them. n

I

magine knowing exactly where your tools are, when you need them. If getting it all sorted seems too daunting a task, don’t despair – organising your gear takes just a few storage steps.

Peg to differ

Keep tools that are in regular rotation, like your hammer and screwdrivers, on a pegboard. Pegboard holes are arranged in either a diagonal or square layout, so think about which hooks and accessories are best for your needs, then make sure they are compatible with the board you pick. A workbench with an integrated pegboard can be a good combination. “When planning your pegboard layout, think of what tools or accessories you use most often,” says Andrew Derer of Pinnacle Hardware. “Try grouping your tools based on what they are used for, allowing you to easily access everything you need depending on the project. Another tip is to arrange tools in straight lines.” While you might be keen to maximise every inch of space on your pegboard, Andrew says be mindful not to overload it.

Bits ’n’ pieces

Tote boxes provide versatile storage in different sizes to suit hardware such as nuts and bolts, hinges and brackets. They are super simple to hang off a backing plate attached to the wall, and can be rearranged as needed. For even smaller bits and bobs, compartment organisers are ideal for items like screws, nails and driver bits. Larger versions are great for mediumsized stalwarts like drill bits, nail punches, pencils and marking tools.

IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO PUT UP A PEGBOARD, MAKE SURE THERE IS A GAP BETWEEN ITS BACK AND THE WALL SO THERE IS ROOM FOR THE HOOKS AND HOLDERS TO SLOT IN

Luck of the drawer

For collections of hand tools, such as sets of spanners and chisels, a chest or trolley might suit best. Drawers let you keep your tools neatly arranged and chests of drawers (especially ones on castors) can be easier to transport. “Review the size of the tools you’ll need to fit into your new tool box,” says Gary Schoch of Kincrome. “For example, hand tools will be easy to access in shallow drawers, whereas power tools require deep drawers.”

Behind closed doors

Lockable cabinets come into their own with power tools. “A lockable metal cabinet can be a more secure, clean storage solution,” says Andrew. “Also, locking up items such as paints and 70 bunnings.com.au |

cleaning equipment can offer peace of mind that these are not easily accessible to young children or pets.” The Ryobi hanging wall cabinet has a pegboard on the side for blades and attachments. You can choose a locking door or open shelves, and both versions feature hanging rails that let you slot in One+ tools for easy access.

Tall story

Storage rails are good for larger objects and get them off the floor. You can add compatible hooks and hangers for everything from bikes to ladders. Just slot the hook onto the rail where you need it to hang longhandled tools such as rakes and brooms. When mounted on the wall with the correct fixings, the system

should be sturdy enough to hold up bulkier items – even the lawnmower.

That’s my bag

Need to transport your kit? Try a tool bag. These are usually made from heavy-duty nylon and have pockets galore for tools, fasteners and other hardware. A solid toolbox with integrated sorters is also a great way to store your gear on the go. For larger jobs, or if you’re using your tools professionally, a stackable, rolling multi-box system gives you even more space and versatility.

Moving experience

Tradies who take their livelihoods out to job sites need an ambitious space allocation. “A ute tool box made from

If you’re hanging tools on a pegboard, spritz a rag with WD-40 and wipe all the exposed surfaces to create a protective coating that helps prevent corrosion durable aluminium checkerplate is the perfect choice,” says Ben Kissell of Rhino, adding that a 900mm-wide box fits neatly between the wheel arches of a styleside ute tray. Another durable option is a cargo case made from polyethylene plastic. Look for one with a weather-resistant seal, such as those from Rhino.

Try your lock

Give your tools the security they deserve when you’re on a work site by locking them up any time you’re not using them. Stow your gear in a heavy-gauge steel site box with a high-security locking system that encloses the padlock. For padlocks, choose one with a boron-carbide shackle that is almost impossible to cut. For tools that can be chained up, opt for braided steel cable; unlike ordinary twisted cable, this type tends to squash rather than snip cleanly when attacked with bolt cutters.

HOMEMADE TERRAZZO

CREATE STRIKING PIECES USING A CLASSIC TECHNIQUE MADE SIMPLE WITH MODERN MATERIALS Project, photography and styling NATASHA DICKINS

T

errazzo is traditionally made by adding marble chips, stone pieces or crushed glass to a concrete formula that is poured into a mould, left to harden, and polished. It’s used for tiles and flooring, but has become on-trend for homewares. We’ve used a plastic pot saucer as a mould to make this table, but you could use any shape mould. To adjust the volume of mixture, simply change the size of the measuring jug to suit bigger or smaller projects. For a deeper pink, add more red oxide with less white, and vice versa for a lighter shade. bunnings.com.au |

PINK TERRAZZO MIX Tools & materials nS afety equipment (disposable gloves, mask, and eye protection) n Round plastic basin n Insect mesh offcut n Large and small spatulas n Measuring jug n Mould (we used a 780mm x 365mm plastic pot saucer) n Rubber trowel n Spray bottle with water n Cloths n Small paintbrush n Off-white builder’s cement n Washed sand n White and red oxide n Bonding agent n Coloured crushed mosaic glass n 120- and 180-grit wet and dry abrasive paper n Natural-look concrete sealer

MAKE A TABLE

1 To make terrazzo mix, cover an old basin with insect mesh. Use a large spatula to sieve three parts off-white cement, one part sand and one part oxide (three parts white, one part red). Tip: To fill a 780mm x 365mm plastic pot saucer mould, use a 1L jug to measure the parts into a 16L basin.

2 In a jug, combine one part bonding agent with four parts water. Pour small amounts into the dry mix, combining until it has the smooth consistency of toothpaste, discarding any leftover solution. Tip: Pour 200ml bonding agent into a 1L jug and top with 800ml water.

3 To make the tabletop, sprinkle crushed mosaic glass evenly over the base of the mould. Use a small spatula to dollop concrete directly onto the glass, without moving the pieces. Tip: To make our table, we used a 135g box of Rose Quartz crushed glass.

4 When the base is covered, add another layer of concrete to fill the mould to 30mm deep, spreading it evenly. Agitate the mould to remove air bubbles, lightly smooth the surface with a rubber trowel and leave to dry overnight. Remove the mould and leave to cure for 24 hours.

5 Spritz with water and smooth the edges with 120-grit wetand-dry abrasive paper, sand over the top with 180-grit abrasive paper, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Brush with two coats of concrete sealer and leave to dry. Tip: The top of the table is the face formed by the mould.

6 To make the base, cut 9mm MDF panel to 710mm x 300mm, smooth the edges with 180-grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust. Spray paint the MDF and metal legs with light, even coats, leaving to dry after each. Centre the legs upside down on the MDF, marking them 100mm in from the ends.

1 To make the frame of the mould, use a handsaw with mitre box to cut 64mm DAR pine to make a 180mm base, 135mm side, 95mm top, 50mm top side, plus 85mm end and middle rails. From 12mm plywood, cut a 250mm-square backing.

2 Set out the frame following the placement in the image above. From the outside of each butt join, pre-drill two holes, 9mm in from the ends, with a 6G countersinking bit. Check the edges are flush and straight while securing with 6G x 30mm screws.

3 Position the frame flush with one corner of the backing, then pre-drill from the back, securing into the frame with a screw into each piece. Tip: Check your placement of the pieces with a combination square and use it to position the holes.

4 Use a 250ml jug to measure out parts for mix and bonding solution into a 4L basin. Sprinkle crushed glass into the mould, fill with concrete, sprinkle glass again and agitate the mould to remove air bubbles. Trowel the top and leave to dry overnight.

5 To remove the bookend, unscrew the backing and frame, gently tapping any stuck pieces with a rubber mallet, then leave to cure for 24 hours. Tip: Weather affects drying times, so leave for longer if the concrete still feels damp.

6 Spritz all over with water before smoothing along the edges and corners with 120-grit abrasive wet-and-dry paper, then sand all over with 180-grit. Wipe away dust, apply two coats of concrete sealer with a brush and leave to dry. bunnings.com.au |

sanding and spray painting, work in a ventilated area, out of the wind, wearing a dust mask, disposable gloves and eye protection. Cover bare skin to avoid irritation from airborne material. n Cement is a dry powder that is combined with other elements including water to create concrete. Choose a white or off-white cement, otherwise the concrete will be grey. n Use washed sand rather than builder’s sand, which contains clay that makes the concrete too sticky and heavy for this project. n We used store-bought crushed glass because it’s safer to work with than crushing your own glass or marble mosaic tiles. n Before spray painting, cover surrounding areas with a drop cloth to avoid overspray. n The terrazzo table is decorative only and not designed to be used as a seat. Lift it by supporting the leg plates. Table is designed for indoor use only. Avoid placing food directly on the table top – always use a serving board or plates.

2 Use a 3mm bit to pre-drill holes through the sides, 15mm down from the top edge. Smooth over with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove breakout, then wipe away dust with a cloth.

3 Apply two coats of water-based enamel paint all over using an angled paintbrush, leaving to dry thoroughly after each. Tip: Paint underneath first and leave to dry, then position the trays on offcuts to paint the rest.

4 Cut two 170mm side rails from 90mm x 12mm DAR Tasmanian oak with a mitre saw. Smooth with 180-grit abrasive paper, rounding over the edges slightly, and wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Use a small brush to seal with two coats of clear varnish, leaving to dry after each.

5 With the base tray flat on the workbench, position the rails against the sides, 175mm from the front, securing with 20mm button head screws through the pre-drilled holes from inside. Tip: Use white-head screws if you have them.

6 Turn the assembly on its side to position the top tray between the rails, 135mm from the front, securing with 20mm button head screws through the pre-drilled holes from inside. Tip: Use a combination square to check the measurements.

PLANTS

COMPACT VARIETIES

Little wonders Create an orchard in any size of garden with mini fruit trees

Dwarf peach

The sweet taste of a peach is best enjoyed fresh or in desserts and jams. Dwarf peach trees grow 1.5-2m tall and wide, and are great for containers and garden beds. Choose a spot in full sun with well-draining soil. Water regularly until established and stake when young to support heavy fruit loads.

Dwarf apple

As beautiful as their fruit is delicious, dwarf forms grow 2-3m high and wide. They prefer cool and temperate climes, but there are varieties that suit subtropical zones. You will need two different varieties (‘Gala’ and ‘Pink Lady’, for example) for pollination and fruit to set, so make sure you have room for both.

Dwarf peach

(Prunus persica)

Dwarf apple

(Malus domestica)

Thrives in areas with cool winters but, with the right varieties, can be grown in warmer climates.

Position the trees in full sun and dig in plenty of compost prior to planting.

Dwarf lemon

Dwarf plum

Dwarf lemon

Every backyard should have a lemon tree. The tangy juice enhances many sweet or savoury dishes. A dwarf form grows 1-2m tall and wide and is ideal for pots and small gardens. Grows best in a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil. Feed regularly year-round with a citrus fertiliser.

Japanese plums are a popular variety of dwarf plum, producing fruit that’s delicious fresh or bottled into a sauce. They grow in areas with cold winters and, like apples, require a compatible pollinating partner. Stake trees well to support heavy crop loads. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

(Citrus limon)

Most lemons prefer warm climates, but ‘Lisbon’ and ‘Meyer’ are tolerant of cooler conditions.
