Keep up with tradition and sow sweet peas on St

DAFFODIL

The trumpet-like blooms are the first spring bulbs to appear. Available in classic yellow, but can also be white or pastel pink.

Patrick’s Day (March 17). But don’t worry if you miss it – seeds can be sown until late autumn. Give the lawn a good feed to help it recover from all the summer activities. If there are bare patches, sow lawn seed to help fill them in and prevent weeds from invading.

TULIP

One of the world’s most loved bulbs, with a beautiful palette of colours and flower forms.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

The plot thickens Grow the lawn of your dreams with the innovative new seed range from Scotts Lawn Builder

H

owever much you may dream of a perfect stretch of cool, green grass on which to relax, play or even just stand back and survey with satisfaction, if you don’t have the right foundation, establishing a lawn that will work for you and your lifestyle will become a challenge. Kids and pets can take their toll, leaving you with bare patches. You might find the lawn looks more field than fairway, some way from the green carpet you really wanted. Or you may simply feel you’re spending all your time mowing, when you really want to be feet up in a hammock with a cuppa, admiring.

SOW SIMPLE

1 Scotts Lawn Builder ‘Tough’ custom grass seed, $17.98/1kg, I/N: 0335723. 2 Scotts Lawn Builder ‘Awesome’ custom grass seed, $17.98/1kg, I/N: 0335722. 3 Scotts Lawn Builder ‘Relaxed’ custom grass seed, $17.98/1kg, I/N: 0335724. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

The answer lies with Scotts Lawn Builder, who have developed a new range of Custom Grass Seeds to suit your lifestyle, giving you the choice to grow a lawn that’s right for you! Are you after a swathe of soft, dense grass to sink your toes into? Scotts Lawn Builder Awesome is the lush ‘trophy lawn’ you’ve dreamt of, with soft blades and a deep green colour. Scotts Lawn Builder Tough sets

the scene for pets, kids and backyard cricket and will deliver a harder-wearing lawn that can shrug off heavy foot traffic with ease. Or if you really need your lawn to be simple and low-maintenance, opt for Scotts Lawn Builder Relaxed – once established, it’s designed to need less time mowing, watering and feeding, so you can hit that hammock for longer!

LUSH PROSPECT Scotts Lawn Builder Custom Grass Seeds have been blended for your specific climate so, depending on your location, you’ll be purchasing a ‘Warm’ or ‘Cool’ variety, making sure your seeds have the best chance of survival. The seeds also have a unique coating that encourages faster germination and helps deter pests, like birds and ants. To make application easier, the inbuilt seed spout is perfect when repairing patches and a Scotts Spreader can be used to lay a new lawn or to improve a thinning stretch of turf. For the best chance of success, preparation and timing is key, so be sure to follow the instructions on the pack.

hen Chelsea and James purchased their home in Perth’s beachside suburbs, it was all about the location. “We bought this old house with the intent to pretty much gut it and redo it,” says Chelsea. First on their to-do list was the kitchen, which lacked storage and was closed off from the rest of the living space. Chelsea had picked up skills watching her parents flip houses, but DIY was all new to James. “Before he moved to Australia, he played football professionally and had never even touched a screwdriver!” says Chelsea. Still, the pair pulled off the reno with help from some tradies and her electrician dad – and managed to stick to their budget. 20 bunnings.com.au |

During Mapping it out

To make sure their DIY workload was manageable, Chelsea and James broke up the reno into smaller tasks. “We tried to do it so that we could use parts of the kitchen for as long as possible to make it easier,” says Chelsea. The process took around

Strip lights

11 months, beginning with alterations to the floor plan. The couple blocked off a door to the carport and a side window to allow for a fridge recess. “Then it seemed very closed in to have the island bench go all the way to the wall, so that’s when we decided to cut that off,” explains Chelsea. That next step delivered the stylish central island, and a more welcoming and open space. To fix the lack of storage, the couple turned a second walkway through to their front sitting room into a pantry.

Light the way

Chelsea and James wanted a way to delineate the cooking zone, which they have done by adding a drop ceiling. By raising a section between the island and the backbench and adding LED strip lights, they’ve also created the illusion of a skylight. Above the island, they opted for simple downlights over pendants. “We put a large pendant over our dining table, just to the left of the kitchen, so we didn’t want to have things hanging everywhere,” explains Chelsea.

bunnings 21

“We had finished the splashback area before we started the floor, so we went into Bunnings and took a couple of the samples to find a floor tile to match,” explains Chelsea, who chose the same tile in a rectangle shape. “That was the nicest tile because it had some light colours, whites and light greys going through it and that would help tie in the floor tile and obviously the gloss whites.” They used the same tile along the pantry wall. “We wanted to keep it all matching but we didn’t want to have a full tile in the scullery, so we cut them in half.”

Power moves

Cupboard love

For the new cabinetry, Chelsea opted for Kaboodle Kitchen’s Modern profile design in Gloss White. “We decided on the Kaboodle Kitchen range because we could put it all together ourselves, saving us on labour costs,” she says. Floor space in the new pantry was limited, so fitting it out required a little creativity. “Because we didn’t have much depth to play with, we actually used wall cupboards and just put them on the floor!”

ABOVE When storage is on display, limiting materials to just a few – such as timber and glass – keeps the look neat

Tile style

Light, bright and neutral was the colour palette the couple had in mind, and between the glossy cabinetry and the pale tiles on the splashback, oven stack and island, they’ve nailed it.

22 bunnings.com.au |

bunnings

There’s a lot to love about the new kitchen the pair have created, but for Chelsea there’s a standout feature. “We put a power point on each end of the island bench with two power points and two USB sockets,” she says. “So, if you want to charge your phone, you can just plug it in on the end of the island, or if you want to use a sandwich toaster or a food processor that’s stored in the cupboard, it’s easy to find power.”

Whether you choose a single-bowl, double-bowl or simple round-bowl sink, there’s a board to match. Opted for a double sink? Pick up a roll-out drying mat to make doing the dishes an easier process, or look for the board and colander set so you can chop and wash your fruit and vegetables all in the one spot.

hether you’re designing a dream kitchen from scratch or remodelling an outdated one, the key to achieving the perfect space for your style and budget is ticking off the nonnegotiable inclusions. These 10 must-have features cover beauty and brains – or form and function, as designers put it – for a kitchen you’ll love to look at and live in.

HEART OF THE HOME

Charcoal-coloured cabinet doors help camouflage black appliances, such as this Kleenmaid built-in oven

Ease-of-use height

1

Optimal layout

Consider your lifestyle and the way you use a kitchen to determine functionality that works for you, suggests Cameron Gray of Kaboodle Kitchen. “An optimal kitchen layout has everything readily accessible. The kitchen ‘work triangle’ concept – based on the three main work areas of the sink, refrigerator and cooktop – is a start but it’s not a hard, fast rule,“ he says. “The three work areas should be near enough to each other to allow for efficient meal preparation, but also not feel restrictive. Marking up a floor plan and plotting in cabinetry and appliances with masking tape on the floor allows you to walk around the space, and feel what your kitchen is going to be like.”

“People want prof iles that are less ‘busy’ to the eye, not just on the benchtop but on door fronts, too” Cameron Gray, Kaboodle Kitchen

2

Ace the appliances

Start with big-ticket items such as the oven, cooktop, rangehood, fridge and dishwasher to determine the budget left for cabinetry, benchtops, walls, floor and lighting. Danny Hamilton of Kleenmaid advises picking the oven first. “Take into account how much cooking you do to choose the oven size. Do you want it under the bench or in a tower?

Consider convenience and safety in terms of lifting and pushing trays in and out. Do you have children who could access the oven?” he says. “Once you’ve established the size and location of the oven, select the cooktop and rangehood next.”

3

The right profile

Cabinetry fronts set the tone of the kitchen. Choose a look that lends

workability to your design, and decide if you want it to complement the era and style of your home or deliver a contrast. Shaker-style cabinet profiles are a perennial favourite and work well in almost any home, from a retro charmer to a contemporary space. Modern flat-front cabinets are also popular, fitting with the trend towards minimalist, uncluttered spaces.

4

Storage ideas

Save space and gain better access to the things you need by utilising internal storage devices, like pull-out baskets for cabinets, drawers and pantry. Problem areas, like corner cabinets, can be solved with rotating baskets. “Drawers are a great accessibility solution – you don’t have to get on your hands and knees to get to the back of the cupboard,” says Cameron. “The general rule now is, install as many drawers as possible.” Plus, if you’ve got the height, use it! Maximise vertical space with overhead cupboards, or in a compact zone, open shelves for a less closed-in feel.

5

Best benchtops

“You want a benchtop space that has a good run so you’ve got a decent amount of space to work with,” says Cameron. “Also consider the benchtop landing space next to appliances.” Opt for the best quality material you can afford and be practical; if you’re on a tight budget, bear in mind that timber and easy-care laminate can be fitted DIY, but surfaces like engineered stone will need to be installed by professionals. Get more information at the Special Orders Desk.

6

Illuminate

Consider lighting in the early stages. Ambient, task and accent lighting all should be in a kitchen plan, zoned for separate duties. It needs to be functional – particularly in food prep areas – and to create distinct atmospheres. Safety is paramount, especially when dealing with sharp knives and hot pots. A mix of downlights and pendants will illuminate work spaces, as well as allowing you to adjust the ambience.

7

Nail the f looring

Tiles are affordable, easy to clean and available in a vast array of colours, patterns and finishes. Natural stone, such as marble, slate, granite and travertine, brings a luxury look, but requires more care than ceramic tiles. Engineered timber flooring lends warmth and is more forgiving under foot. For the look of stone or wood, vinyl is budget-friendly, hard-wearing and water-resistant.

For tapware, the key thing to think about, says Luke Di Michiel at Caroma, is how the kitchen is used. “If you enjoy cooking, tapware with a pull-out or pull-down retractable hose system is great for quick clean-ups and practical for big, deep sinks,” he says. “Additional features can provide streams for different tasks, such as

a gentle mist for washing vegetables to stronger water flow for removing cooked-on spaghetti from pans.” For the finish, Luke suggests looking to your appliances or door hardware; “Consider how the tapware fits with the rest of your kitchen. Be conscious of the metallic finishes, making sure they’re speaking the same language.”

5

9

Be sink savvy

Maximise benchtop space by choosing an undermount sink. “They give a clean look and are practical,” says Luke. “Printing out the size of your sink on paper is a great way to visualise how it will sit. There’s nothing worse than losing too much benchtop because you’ve underestimated the size of your sink, or choosing a sink too small for your needs.”

10

Keep in mind... Always engage licensed trades to perform plumbing and hardwired electrical work.

7

Style matters

White kitchens won’t date, but a bold finish might bring you more joy. “We’re seeing a trend towards woodgrain and timber-look cabinets paired with white, forest green or light-blue cabinetry,” says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. “Blacks and black woodgrains work well in larger spaces with natural light, whereas softer tones tend to work better in more confined settings to help open up the space.” Paintable cabinetry, like Kaboodle Kitchen’s paint-your-own doors, gives unlimited choice to express yourself. For impact without going too bold, look at the splashback; this can be equal parts functional and feature, especially in a small space. Slab splashbacks are a clean, modern look, while tiles come in myriad sizes, colours, patterns and finishes, including irregular texture for an artisanal feel.

The best basin

Your basin will determine the choice of taps. “The tap needs to complement the basin you select,” says Methven’s Andy Grigor. “Do you need a taller tap or a wall-mounted version to fit over the basin, or is the basin designed for a tap to be included?” There are many different types of basin. Wall-mounted ones are great for small spaces or powder rooms where storage is less important. They have no vanity attached and are hung directly on the wall. Some come with an optional half or full-height pedestal to conceal plumbing pipes. Tapware can be wall- or hob-mounted (fixed into the basin). Inset, recessed and under-counter models all sit within the vanity to different degrees – partly, with some of the basin or just the rim showing, or completely below the surface. Taps can be wall- or hobmounted. Above-counter/vessel

ABOVE Methven ‘Minimalist’ WELS 4-star 7.5L/ min basin mixer, $110.50, I/N: 5000602

basins sit on the vanity surface, with taps mounted on the wall or vanity. Check the height of your tap when choosing a vessel sink – the spout needs to easily clear the rim, but not be so tall it will cause splashing.

Decide whether you want a basin mixer or a three-piece set (hot and cold taps with spout). “Both types can be installed either directly onto the basin or partially concealed in the wall cavity in a wall-mounted installation,” says Luke Di Michiel. “Basin mixers are generally the easiest to install and update, whereas wall basin mixers can provide a more visually clean look.” For hob-mounted tapware, ensure you pick a sink with the right number of tap holes. It’s possible to find twin pillar taps, one for hot water and one for cold, but mixers and sets are more common, with a broader range of styles. Ensure you check the WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) rating; this scheme deals with water use, marking the water flow per minute with a star system. The more stars, the more water-efficient the tap.  bunnings.com.au |

pring is often when we ramp up maintenance around the house, yet crisp, sunny autumn days are also made for rolling up the sleeves and delving into some satisfying deep cleaning. Here’s a list of jobs to refresh your home inside and out before hunkering down for winter.

1

Washers, dryers and drains are in constant use, so regular cleaning is essential to prevent grime build-up

Bedding

Strip your bed and wash the lot. “Most pillows and duvets can be placed in the washing machine, but ensure you read the care instructions first,” says Adriana Aziz of Maid For You (maidforyou.com.au). If your machine isn’t big enough for the job, head to a self-service laundry. “Wash duvets and pillows on the longest cycle with cold water and a gentle detergent. Follow with an extra spin cycle or two before hanging out to dry,” says Adriana. For memory foam pillows and bed toppers, which can’t be machine washed, Adriana suggests a spot clean with a damp cloth, followed by a vacuum with an upholstery attachment.

2

Dryer, washer Drains

Soft furnishings

Take rugs and runners outside for a shake, address any stains with a spot cleaner and leave to air in the sun for the day. For professional results, hire a Britex carpet cleaning machine to give carpets and upholstered furniture a deep, revitalising steam clean.

3

Drains

Kitchen, bathroom and laundry drains are often forgotten until there’s an issue, but an annual or biannual flush out is a good habit to get into. Try a drain-unblocking liquid or pellets to remove odours and improve flow, or use an unblocking tool to blast away build-up. “A cup of cleaning vinegar tipped down the sink regularly will also help eliminate any odours and break down deposits,” says Richard Champion of Totally HouseProud (totallyhouseproud.com.au).

4

Give laundry workhorses some TLC. “Empty the lint filter to improve the dryer’s efficiency and use a mild dish soap and microfibre cloth to clean the inside of the drum,” says Adriana. To combat mould and bacteria build-up in the washing machine seal, Adriana suggests wiping the drum with white vinegar before running a drum clean or hot water cycle with a bit of detergent.

“Decluttering is a great way to clean bedrooms. It’s an amazing feeling to get rid of stuff you no longer use” Adriana Aziz, Maid For You 34 bunnings.com.au |

5

Aircon units

Before cleaning air conditioners, refer to the instruction manual and turn the power off at the wall. Adriana suggests wiping the outside of the interior unit with a cloth, then cleaning the filter with a vacuum or soft brush. If louvres can be removed, vacuum or wipe them. Brush dust and debris from around the exterior unit.

Aircon filters are designed to catch dust and need to be kept clean to maintain good air quality

Rangehood filters

6

Fridge and freezer

Grease traps

Banish kitchen grease. Start by removing rangehood filter covers and give them a spray with a degreasing cleaner, followed by a run in the dishwasher on a heavy duty setting. Match your cooktop surface with the right cleaning product (stainless steel or ceramic) and a microfibre cloth to gently wipe away cooking stains. Give oven racks a soak in a sink of hot soapy water and clean inside the oven with a targeted product. Use a scraper to carefully remove debris baked onto the oven door.

7

Being food central, the kitchen is one room you want to keep fresh and sparkling

Fridge and freezer

It’s the perfect time to take stock of your chilled and frozen contents. Empty the lot onto the kitchen bench and sort through it systematically. Give the fridge and freezer a thorough wipe out and remove crispers for a wash. Richard also recommends giving seals

a clean with a diluted mixture of bleach or vinegar. You could use an old toothbrush to get into the crevices. Before returning food items, check best-before dates, look for freezer burn on meat and consider ways to streamline storage. If decanting items or batch freezing, maximise space with square stackable containers.

Cleaning windows can be a big job, but the right equipment and a good technique makes the process much quicker. Start by cleaning out window and door tracks using a track brush, and vacuum the loosened debris. To clean the glass, Richard Champion recommends applying a solution of 50ml of dishwashing detergent mixed in a half bucket of hot water, prior to washing and squeegeeing off. “Finish with a light spray of streak-free window cleaner, polish with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and have a safety blade at the ready to remove bugs or stubborn paint drips,” he adds. 36 bunnings.com.au |

Make your next move plastic-free with Wrap & Move eco-alternative packing staples! Plan a move without the plastic with Wrap & Move’s range of paper-based products

M

oving house can be a plasticheavy exercise, but it doesn’t have to be. With Wrap & Move’s range of environmentally friendly products, all your precious possessions can be transported without it!

BUBBLE, BUBBLE Moving generally means using large amounts of bubble wrap, but while the kids may love cell-popping afterwards, eco-conscious adults will love Wrap & Move Honeycomb Paper Wrap more. It’s easy to tear and the interlocking design means you don’t need to tape it up. Business owners, this one’s for you too: the Wrap & Move Honeycomb and Tissue Paper Wrap Kit is ideal for wrapping fragile goods before shipping – the tissue is gentle on surfaces, the honeycomb provides padding, and the easy-to-use dispenser makes it so simple to wrap and go.

IT’S A WRAP Protective packaging is essential for transporting glasses and bottles, but while foam pouches and socks do a stellar job, there are other ways to avoid scratches and smashes. Try substituting foam for the Wrap & Move Kraft Paper Roll or Wrap & Move Butchers Paper – hot tip for families: give the paper a second life as drawing materials for kids! Wrap & Move Brown Tissue Paper is also excellent for wrapping, is acid-free for long-term storage, and can be scrunched up to fill excess space to keep items safely cushioned.

TAPE IT UP There’s a greener alternative to traditional plastic tape too. Wrap & Move Kraft Paper Packing Tape works just as well as the plastic equivalent to keep boxes secure, plus it’s easy to tear by hand and to write on!

CLEVER COATINGS

Gold comfort

Elevate walls and objects with the lustrous aura of gold. “Specialty effects paints like Dulux Duramax are perfect for decorative surfaces, shelving, wall hooks, furniture and accessories,” says Brittney Gardiner of Dulux. Available as a spray paint, you will need to apply it in a well-ventilated space, and use drop sheets to catch any overspray. “Mask off with a good-quality masking tape, and then mix your paint by giving the spray can a good shake,” says Brittney. Gold paint can also be brushed on in enamel form, and a more muted metallic finish can be brushed or rolled onto an entire feature wall. Specialised wall paints are also available in steel effect, tintable metallic and pearl sheen.

All that glitters

For a unique shimmering effect, try a glitter paint. “Incorporating glitter, metallic-sheen or pearl finishes into an interior will set the scene for a hotel-inspired space,” says interior designer Amanda Pocock (acpstudio.com.au). “The subtle light reflection created with these speciality finishes will evoke feelings of opulence and relaxation.”

ABOVE This feature wall was painted with Dulux Wash & Wear in Namadji, then given a coat of Dulux Design Glitter Effects in Rose Gold

If you want a stone-look pot, why not try a stoneeffect paint finish?

Kitchen and bathroom blitz

Transform tired-looking wet rooms with paint designed for tiling, benchtops and cabinets, like the Dulux Renovation range. To prepare the surfaces, remove all silicone, thoroughly clean using sugar soap, then apply specialised primer. Plan your schedule carefully because the primer must dry for eight hours. Mix the additive into the paint – which can be tinted to a range of colours – then apply it using the same size brushes and rollers as for the primer. You’ll need to apply at least two coats.

Set in stone

Turn ordinary earthenware into statement pieces using liquid stone paint. Available in a range of finishes including granite, sandstone and basalt, this makes inexpensive pots look like they were hewn from rock. It’s also a great way to give pavers a sleek new appearance. “Before applying a stone-effect finish, prepare raw terracotta and similar porous surfaces using a suitable primer such as Crommelin LiquidStone Primer,” says Dayne Watkins at Crommelin. “The finish should be applied using a standard synthetic multipurpose paintbrush.”

Pave it forward RIGHT A bathroom is given a new lease of life using the Dulux Renovation Range, with tiles in Lexicon and benchtop and vanity in Ticking

Need a safer non-slip surface outdoors, or a luxe look for a paved patio? Choose a lowsheen paving paint that improves substrate friction and makes a style statement. Today’s solvent-based options, such as Berger Jet Dry, are ready for recoat in two hours, and can be tinted to match Colorbond fencing or roofing. bunnings.com.au |

Before painting concrete, you will need to give it a thorough clean and, if water beads on it once it’s dry, scrub with an etching agent. Rinse off and check the concrete is fully clean with masking tape – if there is debris left on the tape when you peel it off, repeat the process.

Grungy garages

Give your concrete garage floor a showroom sheen with an interior epoxy finish. The Dy-Mark garage floor kit has everything you need for a striking result, including etch primer and colourful decorative flakes, and includes enough paint for a standard two-car garage. Once you’ve mixed the two parts together and waited for them to activate as per the instructions, simply apply by cutting in around the edges using an ordinary paintbrush. For the main part of the floor, it’s best to use a long-handled roller with an 8-16mm nap.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

Pedal to the metal

For steel garden features and furniture, try a hammered-effect metal paint such as White Knight’s Rust Guard hammered finish. It only takes one step to apply this dimpled coating to unprimed steel. Just use a wire brush and sandpaper to get rid of any flaking rust first. You can also upcycle metal objects by coating them in cold gal, like White Knight’s Rust Guard cold gal product. This is a heavyduty, zinc-rich coating that bonds to ferrous metals and prevents them from corroding, and can be painted over or simply left as is. 44 bunnings.com.au |

Mow smarter Meet the lawnmower you’ll fall in love with

The GARDENA SILENO Minimo robotic mower keeps the lawn in check and ticks a huge task off your to-do list

I

t’s time to get smart when it comes to keeping your lawn neat and tidy. With the GARDENA SILENO Minimo Robotic Lawnmower, you can take back your weekends without neglecting the yard.

SERIOUSLY SMART Bluetooth technology has finally reached the backyard. With the help of the GARDENA Bluetooth® app and your smartphone or tablet, you can now mow the lawn with a few taps of your finger, using the Bluetooth® automated SILENO Minimo Robotic Lawnmower. Set-up is straightforward, and once you’re connected you can sit back and enjoy a healthy, good-looking lawn.

MAKING SENSE The machine’s SensorControl function automatically adjusts the required mowing time, based on grass growth, while its highly responsive collision sensors make sure the mower operates safely with no accidents or damage to your garden. When the mower is lifted, another set of sensors makes the blades stop immediately to prevent injury. When it needs charging, it automatically returns to its charging station.

RAIN OR SHINE

$999

GARDENA ‘SILENO Minimo 250’ robotic lawnmower, I/N: 0346490.

Wet weather is no longer an excuse for an overgrown lawn – the SILENO Minimo Robotic Lawnmower will get to work whatever the weather. If the ground is frozen or too frosty, the robot will detect the conditions and pause its program until it’s thawed, for the health of your lawn. A boundary wire determines the mowing area, ensuring the lawnmower only works through the areas you’ve specified, up to 250 square metres.

WORKING HARD Tackling slopes of up to 25 per cent, the SILENO Minimo Robotic Lawnmower can handle most situations. The CorridorCut and SpotCutting features let it take on the narrowest lawns, tight corners and even places such as under trampolines or garden furniture, delivering an even cut every time. The best part? The robotic lawnmower cuts quietly, so you can truly relax while it works away. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Although the mower has a number of built-in safety features, it is still advised not to use the product when persons, especially children, or animals are in the work area. Keep your hands and feet away from the rotating blades. Never put your hands or feet close to or under the product when it is switched on.

FOR A GARDEN THAT KEEPS ON GIVING ALL THROUGH THE WINTER MONTHS, NOW IS THE TIME TO PUT IN THE WORK

VEGIES TO SOW NOW

Milder autumn temperatures make working in the garden pleasant, plus there’s less need for watering and bug patrol

T

he heat has retreated and the last of the summer vegies are fading – which means it’s time to sow cool-season crop seeds. You may be surprised to learn there are plenty of goodies you can sow now to harvest from late autumn through winter. Here’s what you need to do.

Clean and clear

Start by clearing garden beds. “Remove weeds, debris and the dried remains of your summer harvest,” says horticulturist Sharon Fairbairn of Floriana (floriana.com.au). Then use a fork to dig the beds over and enrich the soil with organic matter, like aged animal manure or compost. “This ensures the soil is fertile and well aerated, perfect for sowing or

planting,” says Sharon. A similar process applies to any vegetables grown in pots. “Remove old plants, scoop out a large portion of the existing potting mix, loosen the remaining soil and backfill with a premium mix,” says Sharon.

Go to ground

Try to stagger plantings to ensure a steady supply. Plus, mulching is a must to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. “This is an important task for every season,” says permaculture designer Laurie Green of Grow Gather Graze (growgathergraze. com). “Ensure mulch is kept away from stems as this can cause plants to rot,” she warns. You don’t need to fill every bed with vegies. “Let some beds rest by growing a green manure crop,” says Laurie. “The nutrients from these help to rejuvenate the soil and to feed and support next year’s crop.” Try Mr Fothergill’s green manure mix seeds.

Swiss chard Also known as silverbeet, with colourful varieties (above) referred to as rainbow chard, this is a stalwart of the autumn vegie patch. Its puckered leaves are robust, packed with vitamins and nutrients, and can be harvested for up to six months. It prefers a spot in full sun with well-drained soil. To harvest, simply twist and pull the stems from the base. Harvest: 8-12 weeks.

bunnings

Broccoli This nutritious brassica is a must-have for the autumn vegie patch. It doesn’t take up much room and is surprisingly productive; once the central head is harvested, small side shoots develop and can be cut for use. Grow Broccolini® or ‘kailaan’ (Chinese broccoli) if you prefer compact flower heads and crisp stems. Feed fortnightly with liquid fertiliser. Harvest: 16-20 weeks.

“Don’t forget the herbs! Now is a great time to plant dill, chives, rosemary, thyme and oregano – they will be ready in time for hearty winter stews”

Photography (vegies except rainbow chard) Getty Images; (opposite, top left) Gap Photos/Joanna Kossak.

Sharon Fairbairn, Floriana

Peas These crisp pods are delicious raw or cooked and are simple to grow in garden beds or pots. Snow peas and sugar snap peas can be eaten whole, but traditional varieties like ‘Greenfeast’ and ‘Telephone’ need to be removed from their pods before consuming. Choose a sunny, welldrained spot and provide a trellis for support. Harvest: 10-14 weeks.

Garlic Patience is required for garlic, says Sharon. “It takes up to nine months before it’s ready, but it’s super hardy and able to cope with cold winter conditions.” To plant, split the bulb into individual cloves and push them, pointy end up, into loose, friable soil. They should be just below the surface, spaced 10-15cm apart. Harvest: from 24 weeks.

Spring onions Depending on how you like to eat them, spring onions can be used as a ‘cut and come again’ vegie – snip the hollow green leaves as required – or harvested whole. Either way, you will still enjoy the mild onion flavour. Place in full sun and feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser. For a longer supply, sow successive crops every 3-4 weeks. Harvest: 8-10 weeks.

Cauliflower It’s best to get this cruciferous vegie in early as it requires a long growing season to develop the flowering heads or ‘curds’. “But it’s also important to wait until the morning and evening temperatures start to cool, as planting too early can cause the heads to flower prematurely,” says Sharon. Position in full sun and dig in plenty of organic matter. Harvest: 14-18 weeks.

Broad beans This bushy plant has large pods with beans that have a distinct nutty taste – perfect in soups or salads. Sow seeds direct where they are to grow and water in well. Avoid watering again until the first leaves appear. Use stakes or a trellis for support, especially once top heavy with pods. In warmer climates, delay planting until the weather cools. Harvest: 16-20 weeks.

Beetroot You don’t need a lot of space to grow this root vegie – it’s ideal for pots, containers or garden beds. Choose a spot in part shade to full sun, enrich the soil with compost and water regularly to ensure they’re tender and juicy. As the leaves grow, you can harvest the outer foliage for use in salads. Pick sparingly, though, as the plant still needs leaves to flourish. Harvest: 8-10 weeks. bunnings.com.au |

A patio next to the house means the kitchen is on hand for alfresco dining set-ups

A curved concrete bench seat softens this patio by Bunnings Workshop member ProjectPete

Firepits are also a popular inclusion, luring people deeper into the garden and turning the patio into more of a conversation zone. But for fire safety, don’t locate them in a covered area, and check with your local authority for regulations around their use.

… or far?

Locating the patio away from the house creates a destination zone within your garden, and can make an underused area work harder. Consider light (do you want a sun trap or a shady retreat?) and how the space will be used – say, as a private corner, entertaining space or teen hangout. There are many options for patio floors. A poured concrete slab is a functional choice for level areas. Bricks are easy care and recycled ones give a rustic look. Natural stone flags, like granite or limestone, look amazing but can be pricey and need maintenance. Pavers are relatively simple to install yourself, and can replicate more expensive stone.

Photography (left) Kate Claridge, styling Sophie Cocks and Jamie Prebble/thehomeduo.co.nz, (top right) Pete Wernicke/Kayu Design Co; (opposite, top) Adam Robinson Design, (opposite, middle) Brigid Arnott, styling Tilly Roberts, (opposite, bottom) Sue Stubbs, styling Samantha Torrisi. †Available to order online or at the Special Orders Desk

Interior designer James Treble (jamestreble.com) says the obvious place for a patio is off an open-plan living/dining space, if the house allows. “Many new homes come with a standard alfresco offering,” he says. “But it’s common to extend the slab out to the sides where you can, and to the rear, so it’s outside of the roofline. It just gives you more space.” A patio off the living/dining areas gives easy access to the kitchen, and if an outdoor kitchen is part of the plan, positioning the patio next to the house makes sense, says landscape architect Meredith Gleeson of Outdoor Establishments (outdoorestablishments. com). “You can connect to utilities and create an extension of the entertaining area from within a home, making a versatile ‘indoor/outdoor’ space,” she says.

Ceramic tiles usually need to be professionally laid over a concrete slab, but are simple to maintain. Both the appearance and the useability of the patio will be influenced by its flooring material. In a sunny area, paler pavers may be cooler underfoot than darker ones, but can be glary in very bright light. For homes on bearers and joists, or where you have different levels or uneven ground, a raised timber deck could be the answer. “It’s great for summer as it doesn’t make the space hot and you can hose it,” says James.

Surround sensation

Any patio – but particularly one set away from the house – will benefit from screening to give a sense of privacy. If your patio is in a corner of the garden, you’re halfway there; soften the wall or fence with greenery, such as lilly pilly, a fastgrowing native, camellias, which give a hit of colour through to winter, or fragrant mock orange (Murraya paniculata).

‘Stepping pads’ in this Sydney garden by Adam Robinson Design provide a path from the house RIGHT Mimosa ‘Reema’ aluminum corner lounge setting with height adjustable coffee table, $3,089, I/N: 0186804†. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

“Matching tiles in an alfresco space to those on the main floors helps to keep the same flow running from inside to outside”

Corner furniture can help to create a cosy zone in a large outdoor area

James Treble, interior designer

A fixed pergola will define the area and can be ‘walled’ with decorative screening and/or roofed with climbing plants, such as jasmine, for shade. A row of trough planters or large pots with tall shrubs is a simple screening fix, while a shade sail overhead will help keep you cooler in summer.

Style it up Loose pebbles deliver a casual look for a patio

The furniture should suit the patio’s function. A casual daytime retreat might need just a hammock or daybed

and a shade umbrella, while a full-on entertaining space will likely call for a lounge or dining setting, plus outdoor lighting and even heating, if you intend to use the area year-round. If you include an outdoor kitchen, you’ll need to add task lighting; for a conversation zone, keep lighting low, warm and ambient. For instant magic, James loves festoon lights. Hang around nearby trees or across the frame of a pergola to cast a cosy glow on the patio. 

elt-in-the-mouth tender, juicy and distinctively smoky – there’s barbecue and then there’s low ‘n’ slow. If you’re looking to impress, look to Oklahoma Joe’s. Their smokers are designed to deliver slowcooked gourmet perfection.

WHICH GRILL? If you’re serious about smoking, Oklahoma Joe’s ‘Longhorn’ offset smoker can upgrade your grilling game. Designed with a firebox to one side (so you can tend the fire without opening the main smoke chamber) and multiple adjustable dampers, the Longhorn gives you maximum control over the temperature of your cook. The main chamber is big enough to feed a crowd, but you can also use the firebox as a charcoal grill for quick cooking.

Oklahoma Joe’s ‘Judge’ charcoal grill, $969, I/N: 0190714†

Low ‘n’ slow tender meat is always worth the wait, but sometimes a quick-scorched steak is exactly what you fancy. For a grill that caters to every occasion, Oklahoma Joe’s ‘Judge’ charcoal grill features a height-adjustable charcoal tray. Use the handles to slide the tray up for red-hot burger-searing, or lower it for a slow-cooked brisket. If half the street comes calling when you’re cooking, Oklahoma Joe’s ‘Rider DLX’ pellet smoker is the best choice, with its tall body smoke chamber providing more than 1200 square inches of cooking space. That’s enough for multiple courses or 12 whole chickens! Rider DLX uses fuss-free wood pellets to deliver that rich, wood smoke flavour. If you’re after flexible cooking options, the Rider DLX gives great temperature range, from 80°C for slow-cooked meat, to sear mode at over 340°C.

1. Place a water pan in your Oklahoma Joe’s smoker, filled three-quarters full. Preheat to 135°C at the level of the cooking grate. Close the lid and preheat for 20 mins. 2. Place the brisket on a clean work surface. Combine the paprika, garlic and mixed herbs in a small bowl. Rub top of the brisket all over with spice mixture. Place brisket directly on the grill, rub-side down, and close the lid, adjusting the air vents for a slow cook. Cook for 2 hours. 3. Meanwhile, combine the bourbon or water, barbecue sauce, sugar and maple syrup in a small saucepan. Place over low heat and cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 mins or until the sauce thickens. Set aside to cool. 4. Line a large baking tray with foil. Transfer brisket to prepared tray. Brush with half the sauce. Wrap brisket tightly in foil and return to the barbecue. Cook for a further 4 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 96°C when a meat thermometer is inserted into the thickest part of the brisket. Transfer to a board lined with baking paper. Set aside for 20 mins to rest. 5. Use 2 forks to shred the brisket. Sprinkle with spring onion. Drizzle with the remaining sauce and serve with potato salad and spinach.

ABRASIVE PAPER

True grit

SANDPAPER IS A MUST-HAVE ADDITION TO THE DIY TOOLKIT, HANDY FOR A WIDE RANGE OF JOBS Words GUN ARVIDSSEN

T

he unsung hero of many DIY tasks, sandpaper will help you achieve a professional-looking (and splinter-free!) finish, whether you’re painting, woodworking or preparing surfaces to be glued. Here’s what you need to know about this smooth operator.

Grade expectations

The numbers on the back of the sandpaper refer to the paper’s grit rating. “The grit number is the number of holes per square inch in the sieve that sorts the abrasive material. The smaller the number, the larger or coarser the grain,” says Steven Hutchinson of Flexovit. For jobs such as shaping timber and removing paint, which involve sanding away large volumes of material, opt for the coarsest grits of 40 and 60. For general sanding jobs, 80-grit is reasonably rough while still giving you plenty of control and not gouging or scratching the surface. By the time you get to 120-grit, you’re moving into ‘fine grit’ territory, with 180-grit giving you a satiny finish on timber, as well as being great for a smooth-down after the first coat of paint on a timber workpiece. Although the details will vary depending on what you’re using it for, you generally start with a coarse-grit paper such as 60 or 80 and then progress through 120-grit and finally 180- or 240-grit for a smooth-as-silk result. It’s important to sand between coats of paint because some of the fibres on the

1

SHOP

surface of the timber can lift as they absorb the primer or first coat, creating a bristly surface. Giving your workpiece a quick once-over with 180-grit paper eliminates the bristling, while also ‘cutting’ the surface of the paint so that the topcoat can bind to it more effectively.

Rough and ready

Match the type of sandpaper to the particular job you need it for. Painter’s sandpaper is designed so that it does not accumulate

PRO TIP

YOU CAN FRESHEN UP A CLOGGED PIECE OF SANDPAPER BY GIVING IT A ONCE-OVER WITH A WIRE BRUSH, BUT WHEN IT IS NO LONGER ABRADING PROPERLY, THROW IT OUT AND GRAB A NEW ONE

Removing tired varnish from vintage furniture and applying a new finish is one of the easiest and most satisfying DIY tasks

When sanding timber pieces, work in the direction of the grain for best results

SHOP 1 paint dust that would clog ‘standard’ sandpaper intended for timber. Wet-and-dry paper won’t fall apart when saturated and is often sold in extremely fine grit ratings of up to 800 and beyond. “Wet-and-dry paper, which has a distinctive black appearance, can be used with a lubricant – usually water,” says Steven. “Typically made with silicon carbide grain, it is used to resurface or restore metal surfaces. The water assists by reducing clogging of the abrasive, helping achieve a high-gloss finish.”

2 3 4

Shape up

Ever wondered why sandpaper comes in such a bewildering variety of pre-cut shapes, rolls and sheets? Rolls of sandpaper are best used with a sanding block. Folding the paper back and forth ‘breaks’ it, allowing it to be easily torn. Sheets in the standard size of 280mm x 230mm can be divided into thirds or halves and clipped onto orbital sanders. Some are available in extremely fine grades and can be used for hand-sanding to a perfect finish. Discs usually come with perforations for dust extraction, to suit random orbital sanders. They are attached to the sander’s pad with hook-and-loop backing. Triangles and finger pads are pre-cut to suit standard shapes of detail sanders, for getting right into those tight spots. Rectangles with holes are designed for 1/3-sheet and 1/2-sheet sanders.

SAND AND DELIVER

From the humble sanding block to the high-performance belt sander, there’s a tool for every type of smoothing task. Sanding block Made of cork, it’s used by wrapping sandpaper around it for sanding flat surfaces. Sanding sponge This is better suited to rounded and contoured objects that need to be sanded, conforming to the curves and hollows of items such as furniture. into corners and other tight spaces. “When upcycling furniture using a detail sander, it’s always better to take the job slowly,” says Jason Salmon of Ryobi. “You don’t need too much downward force on the sander; let the tool and the paper do the work for you.” 1/3- or 1/2-sheet sander Uses precut sheets clipped to its base or secured using hook-and-loop fastening, and oscillates rapidly to power through sanding jobs. Random orbital sander “It uses an orbital action, while at the same time oscillating in a random pattern. This results in a highly

effective sanding, from fine to very coarse stock,” says Jason. Belt sander Removes more material than other sanders, using a belt tensioned between rollers. To change the belt, first disconnect the power or battery. “Release the belt tensioning lever to slide out the old belt and slide in the new, aligning the arrows on the inside of the belt with those on the sander,” says Jason. “Push the lever back and power up the tool. Holding it upside down, use the tracking dial to make fine adjustments so the belt tracks the centre of the base plate.”

1 Tap a nail into the centre of a 610mm-wide sheet of plywood (at least 300mm from all sides). Tie cord to the nail, measure to 300mm and use this to mark a circle with a pencil. Mark three more circles by measuring the cord to 170mm, 150mm and 20mm from the nail. Remove the nail.

DO IT 4 Use a ruler to mark the frames into thirds, pre-drilling centred holes with a 6mm bit without going all the way through. Twist in 75mm screw eyes and clip on the basket chain sets to check they hang evenly. Unclip the chain sets to complete the project.

5 On the large frame, mark a line 5mm in from the outside edge, using your fingertip as a guide for the pencil. Use a 4mm bit to drill 175 holes around the mark 5mm apart. Tip: Use a drill press if you have one.

n Safety equipment (ear and eye protection) n Scissors n Drill with driver bit n 2mm bit n 12mm coconut fibre rope n 340mm x 280mm rattan woven basket n 290mm round pot trolley n Four 4mm wire eye straps

6 On the small frame, use outdoor double-sided tape to secure a solar rope light box to the top. Wrap the lights evenly around the frame, twisting the end to hold it in place. Repeat with the second rope light and wire light sets.

1 Cut two 600mm lengths of rope, threading the ends through opposite gaps in the side of a large rattan woven basket, securing with knots around the top rim and pulling tight. Trim the excess with scissors. Tip: We allowed 12 gaps between the knots of each length to create handles. 2 Remove the supplied plastic liner and set aside. Centre the basket on a round pot trolley, checking the space around the sides is even. Position four 4mm wire eye straps over the base (as pictured), pre-drilling through the holes with a 2mm bit and securing with the supplied screws. Tip: Secure opposite sides first to ensure the basket remains centred. Replace the liner and add folded blankets and throws.

7 To cut the cord into 500mm lengths, tap the nail into the workbench to hold the roll of cord, mark two points, 500mm apart, then pull the cord and cut with scissors. We needed 175 lengths for our holes.

1 8 Thread each length of cord through a hole, knotting it at the top and pulling through. Neaten the top with scissors, reattach the chain sets and hang both frames from a large plant hook. Tip: Dab any frayed ends in water and twist to make a point that threads through the holes.

2 To make recessed joints for the side rails, on each leg, use a pine offcut to mark 42mm down from the top and a combination square to mark 10mm along the sides of the joint. On the same face, 150mm up from the base, mark either side of the offcut and 10mm along the sides.

5 Clamp the end frames sideways, positioning the front side rails between them, against the legs and lined up with the top and base rails. Secure with adhesive and screws into the legs. Tip: Attach one set of top and base rails, then flip the assembly to attach the other.

8 Position the top and frame upside down, with the backs flush and an even 20mm overhang on the sides. Evenly space two angle brackets along each side, securing into the top and rails with 15mm button head screws. Use a 4mm bit to pre-drill and attach pull handles to the top end rails.

9 Sand the cut end of the top with 180-grit abrasive paper, rounding over the edges and corners to match the rest of the panel, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Touch up the finish by using a clean cloth to apply food-safe benchtop oil over the raw edge, wiping away excess and leaving to dry.

Keep in mind... When cutting timber, always wear a mask, ear and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. n Always ensure that the finish you use on DIY timber kitchen furniture and accessories is food safe. n

3 Set the saw to cut 10mm deep, using an offcut as a test, then make close cuts within and along the marks. Clamp the legs to clean joints with a chisel. Tip: To ensure the blade makes the full cut, position an offcut against the saw fence, with the leg firmly against it, waiting for the blade to stop before moving it each time.

4 To make the end frames, set out the legs, with the recessed cuts facing up, apply adhesive, then position the end rails straight and flush with the sides. Prevent splitting by pre-drilling two holes into each with a combination countersinking bit, securing with 30mm screws so the heads sit below the surface.

6 Position the shelf panel over the base rails, with even gaps at the ends of about 10mm. Pre-drill and countersink holes through the panel, securing into the rails with 30mm screws. Position the backing panel 100mm up from the shelf, flush with the sides of the legs, pre-drilling and securing with screws.

7 Sand the frame with 120-grit abrasive paper, removing screw breakout and rounding over the edges. Fill the screw heads with timber filler, leaving to dry. Sand the frame with 180-grit abrasive paper, wiping away dust with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of water-based enamel paint with a brush, leaving to dry after each.

2 Clamp panel two to the bench, position panel one against it vertically and hammer in the nails. Position a brace flush with the ends, flat side facing out, and secure with 9mm pan head screws (the supplied screws will be too long). Tip: The braces create a solid base for the box.

5 Working on one panel at a time, apply a layer of premixed tile adhesive, spreading it evenly to the edges with a 4mm notched trowel. Position a sheet of mosaics flush with the top and sides, place cross tile spacers along the base of the sheet for even gaps, then position a second sheet.

6 Smooth over the tiles with a squeegee to push them into the adhesive. Run tape lengthways, from inside the box and over the top, to hold the tiles while flipping the box to repeat tiling the panels and top. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove excess adhesive, leaving to cure 24 hours.

3 Flip the assembly and clamp panel one to the bench. On panel three, tap in starter nails, apply adhesive, position it against the assembly, hammer the nails and secure a bracket. Flip and repeat to secure panel four. Apply adhesive along the remaining loose edge and secure with nails.

4 Apply adhesive around the top edge of the box, position the top piece with all sides flush, and secure with nails, wiping away excess adhesive and leaving the box to dry. Smooth all over with 120-grit abrasive paper to remove any breakout and wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

7 Working on one panel at a time, then the top, apply grout into the gaps with an applicator, then smooth it out with a squeegee, covering the gaps and squaring off the edges. Remove excess grout with a damp sponge, smoothing over the edges, leaving to cure 24 hours.

8 With a clean, damp sponge, wipe away the grout haze that forms on the tiles, rinsing after each panel. Smooth around the underneath and the base of the box with 120-grit abrasive paper and remove any grout from the braces. Wipe all over with a clean, damp cloth and leave to dry. 9 Seal the tiled surfaces with a matt, natural-look sealer. We used an aerosol applicator, holding it 200mm from the surface, applying two coats and leaving to dry thoroughly after each. Position self-adhesive slide glides on the braces to prevent scratching the floor or chipping the grout.

PLANTS

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMERS

Seasonal stars Make your autumn garden a blaze of colour with these flowering faves to plant now

Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’

A reliable succulent that has clusters of small flowers atop fleshy, green leaves from early autumn. They start as cream, open to pale pink and finish a coppery-red. It thrives in full sun – especially hot, dry spots – and well-drained soil, and copes with drought once established.

Tibouchina

Depending on the variety, this evergreen has masses of purple, pink or white flowers and ranges from a compact 60cm shrub to a 10m tall tree. Position in a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil. It does require frost-free conditions so, in cold zones, grow a smaller variety in a pot and move it to a protected area.

Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’

(Sedum spectabile)

Tibouchina

(Tibouchina spp.)

Plant in pots, en masse in garden beds, as a groundcover or as part of a mixed perennial border.

Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape. Feed in spring with a complete fertiliser.

Nemesia

Chrysanthemum

Nemesia

Chrysanthemum

For colour and cheer, it’s hard to go past this prolific flowering perennial, with blooms in almost every colour of the rainbow. Plant in the garden in full sun, or potted in a bright spot indoors. It grows best in cool to temperate climates but can also grow in mild subtropical areas. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants
