Let shades of purple reign in your garden this winter

Lavender

This sun-loving, compact perennial, with aromatic grey-green foliage and vibrant blooms, is a sensory delight. The flowers, which generally peak in the warmer months, are mostly purple, lilac or lavender, but there are white and pink forms, too. For a splash of cool-season colour, try the ‘Winter Lace’ range.

Daphne

Much loved for its clusters of fragrant pale-pink and white flowers and glossy green leaves, this evergreen shrub has a neat habit, growing to about 1m tall and wide. Native to cool climates, it is frost-tolerant once established. For warmer climes, try Daphne ‘Eternal Fragrance’.

Winter rose

A star of the winter garden, this low-growing perennial has masses of delicate, cup-shaped flowers on upright stems. The range of colours, forms and patterns is large and varied, making it ideal for adding interest to semi-shaded spots. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with compost.

Native violet

This native grows into a dense groundcover, producing small white/mauve flowers throughout the year that float above a sea of green foliage. Best suited to a shady spot, it spreads via stolons (horizontal, above-ground stems), so is easy to dig up and propagate.

Place in full sun with well-drained soil, prune after flowering and feed with slow-release fertiliser.

Prefers a spot in dappled shade with morning sun. Good drainage is essential as it’s prone to root rot.

For visual impact, plant en masse and mix with other woodland-style plants, such as hosta or brunnera.

Plant around pavers and stepping stones, underneath trees or in hanging baskets.
