The Youth League Women are thrilled to be back home playing at EDSC for this weekend’s round 9 clashes against the Diamond Valley Eagles and the Sandringham Sabres.
Last week, our group had a tough game against the Waverley Falcons. After a disappointing first quarter where we let the Falcons have complete control, it was great to see the girls regroup and get back within 3pts. Unfortunately, following some unfortunate foul trouble and Charlotte Nimmo’s great defensive effort, we just ran out of legs and fell short by 10pts. We were lead by Matilda Trout and Mia Tamburrini on the offensive end and a mammoth effort by Mia Kellock to keep NBL1 player, Liana Kinkella to 3pts for the final three quarters.
For this weekend’s double header we’re expecting two very tough games. Diamond Valley have some very strong talent in Aleisha Cadee and Lucy Oakford, who average 22.4ppg and 13.5ppg respectively, and will be two key matchups to look out for.
Sandringham are currently sitting tied 3rd in the Watson conference, with 7 wins, 4 losses.
Without a doubt, you’re all in for some close games here at the boombox! We’re all super excited to return to EDSC and play in front of you all today.

COACHES CORNER – PREVIEW FROM THE COACH
Welcome to the game, as we move deeper into the middle third of the season, it’s important that we continue to unlock our potential and there has been some noticeable progress in the last month which has been pleasing despite missing some faces from the lineup. Getting Matt Snow back last week was a step forward that will allow everybody to move back to their natural positions and when you consider we have missed backup PG Troy Schaeche who we hold in high regard since round 1, the collective have done a good job of navigating around this.
Last week we made the trip to Bundoora to face RMIT in what was a game befitting of it’s ‘game of the week’ tag. We started slowly trailing by double digits at half time but settled into the game beyond that point and made a big push in the fourth to take the lead in a hostile environment behind Kraig’s best game for the club with a dominant 29pts and 19rebs while Matt Fennell was consistent with 20pts and 9rebs.
Ultimately, we went down 89-81 after leading by 1pt with 2.56 on the clock which will feel will be a great learning experience for our group and one that will put us in good stead for the back end of the year.
Tonight’s match-up sees Gippsland make the trek to the city who are currently 4-4 but have only lost three of those games by 5pts or less which shows they are a genuine top 4 contender.
They are led by import Jalin Wimberly (20.6ppg) who loves to get to the cup and has a knack for drawing fouls but he is ably assisted by the local trio of Ben Barlow (16.8ppg & 6.1rpg), Joel Winderlich (12.5ppg & 7.5rpg) and Kody Tibbals (10.7ppg) who all average double figure points.
They are coming off a bye last week so will be refreshed and eager to get above the .500 ledger.

COACHES CORNER – PREVIEW FROM THE COACH
This week sees the Grand Final rematch between our Bulleen Boomers and the Wyndham Devils.
Both teams are coming off strong starts to the season sitting 7-1 entering round 7. The Devils are the best offensive team in the league posting a whopping 94 points per game, led by reigning MVP Amanda Paschal (28.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 6.9 assists).
On the flip side we are currently the best defensive team in the league holding teams to 53 points per game. This will be a battle of styles between the high-octane Wyndham and the methodical Boomers.
The key matchup for the game will be Amanda Paschal against star guard Amy Baum (8 point, 6 rebounds, 11 assists, 3 steals).
