COACHES CORNER – PREVIEW FROM THE COACH

We’re very excited to be playing in front of our fans this Saturday and we’re looking forward to the game vs Hume.
Our Boomers are coming off a great win last week at home against Camberwell (97-83), in a game we controlled and pretty much had the lead from start to finish. Special mention needs to be made to Marcel Haj’s 35-point performance which put him in the Big V Blue Carpet for Round 8, but the whole team played very well on both ends of the court, limited the influence of Camberwell’s top players and set the tone early on with its aggressive defence.

The absence of Josh and Jaime Uhr-Henry meant we had a shorter rotation of bigs but, even though Camberwell managed to get 27 offensive rebounds (51 in total), we did quite well overall with a smaller line-up.
Today we’re coming up against the top-ranked team in the league; the Broncos have won 9 of their 10 games in the league so far and they are certainly a team to look out for, as they have a lot of quality players in their roster.
Hume is averaging 96.1 points per game, which proves the team’s scoring capacity; more impressively, Hume is also averaging a whopping 58.1 rebounds per game (21.7 offensive, 36.4 defensive), meaning that defence and rebounding will be huge factors in determining tonight’s winner.
Corey Fiddes is the clear stand-out in Hume’s line-up and is arguably one of the top 5 players in the entire league, good for 20.7 points, 16.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game; it goes without saying he is the one who makes Hume tick and will be a major issue for our team.
Other than Fiddes, the Broncos get a lot of production out of Elijah-Taye Saifaleupolu (17.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg), Sam O’Toole (16.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Ben Galea (13.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg), so we really cannot afford to let any of these players find their groove offensively if we want a good chance at winning the game.
We know we have our work cut out for us and we can’t stress enough how important our fans’ presence and support will give our boys extra motivation to win another game. Our young team is progressing very well and we want to keep winning games while improving individually and collectively; only one win separates 2nd from 7th in the ladder, so it’s very important that we build a winning streak and we will do everything we can to win another game in front of our fans.

COACHES CORNER – PREVIEW FROM THE COACH
Welcome to all of our Boomers fans as we embark on a mission to clim b back up the standings and cement ourselves in top 5 finals contention.
Having only taken over the Men’s head coaching duties last Tuesday, it was a whirlwind week of resetting and galvanizing the playing group with minimal preparation prior to heading on the road to face a seasoned Gippsland team who won the Division 2 championship last year and has started the season 5-3 after being promoted to Division 1 in the offseason.
Internally there was a genuine desire within our locker room to start afresh and raise the bar with standards and team cohesion which put us in a great position in front of a vocal Traralgon crowd and to go into half time down 45-39 the belief was there that we were capable of not only competing but had earned respect from our opposition.
Ten minutes later it was that belief that helped us surge ahead to go into the final change with all momentum after holding them to 16pts for the quarter while we poured in 26pts ourselves and took a 4pt lead with one final push the only thing standing in the way of doing what seemed unthinkable a week prior.
As captain Evan Solakidis drained back to back threes and we extended the lead to 12pts with six minutes to play the fairytale started to slip as we tightened up offensively and the raucous crowd carried United as they made big plays down the stretch to win 87-80.
While it was hard to process for the guys in the moment, it was a line in the sand night where the team now believe a new season has begun and anything is possible from this point. It was special to see Solakidis lead from the front in both a playing and emotional sense with 26pts (6/13 3PT) while the Uhr-Henry brothers were rock solid with 15pts each and Riley Johnson played his best game for the club with 8pts & 10rebs holding down the paint.
Tonight we welcome the Coburg Giants, who are a veteran group coming in after two consecutive losses and will be eager to turn around their fortunes with an identical season record (3-6) to us.
French native Romaric Zaire (18ppg & 8.7rpg) has been busy since joining the team recently while Patrick McBrearty (16ppg) is a volume shooter who has the green light and veteran Mweemba Maluma orchestrates their style of play by doing a little bit of everything statistically.
We invite everyone to stick around after the game as the players will be happy to spend 10 minutes out on the court chatting to the fans and getting some shots up with kids after the final buzzer.
Thanks for your support.
