Welcome to our first game of season 2024 in what has been a busy offseason transform ing last year’s 9-11 roster with only five returning players.
Having taken over the team mid-season last year and having some solid results allowed me time to gauge what the future may look like and a core part of our mission to resurrect the Men’s program into being a D1 contender and ultimately returning to the Championship division revolved around adding experience and guys who have won. To be able to attract Matt Fennell and Matt Snow who have collectively won 9 BIG V titles was a major tick in that area and both arrive individually with a point to prove Secondly, reuniting with Kraig Shields who played under me at Sherbrooke in 2019 has been a full circle moment now arriving as a 28 year old with more life experience, and as was my first experience he’s been a pleasure to have at the club.
Our main focus has been building an inclusive culture that harnesses a close-knit environment and resonates with the wider community, as we intend to show a level of professionalism that extends beyond what you see on game night with junior engagement.
The pre-season was the most extensive I have conducted, commencing back in October and while basketball was high on the agenda, we have shared many experiences away from the court that has built camaraderie and pushed the guys outside their comfort zone including a team building camp, boxing sessions and mountain runs.
We were able to play eight pre-season games between December and early March predominantly against Championship division teams which was a great challenge and we had our share of success which bodes well for what’s to come. The team have shown that our depth will be an asset as the season progresses and the roster we have assembled has good balance positionally which will hold us in good stead, considering the league appears to have taken a step forward with the talent pool across the competition.
Lastly, on a personal level, I would like to thank Steve Brophy who has joined the group as my Assistant Coach this year and steps in even with a young family and heavy involvement in our VJBL program which speaks to his passion for the direction of the club and to my son Jordan who relishes the opportunity to coordinate the group as Team Manager thanks for your commitment once again.
To all the fans we appreciate your support, I hope you enjoy the day and spread the word as we would love to pack out EDSC throughout the season
