COACHES CORNER – PREVIEW FROM THE COACH

How time files; we are hosting Craigieburn in our last home game for the home and away season (hopefully we can get a home final and play again at EDSC), a season that has seen our team develop quite nicely in a year of rebuilding, to the point where a finals spot is well within our reach.

Last weekend we had mixed results; a bad defensive showing at Rowville saw us lose to Keysborough 105-81 on Saturday, but thankfully we managed to come back on Sunday at Coburg and won 95-89. The defensive pressure we showed in the second half of the Coburg game was the key factor in securing the win and this is the benchmark that we have set for ourselves for the rest of the season; we want to make opposition guards as uncomfortable as possible, make shooters work very hard for their shots and cause lots of disruptions in our opponents’ offensive sets, so we can create stops and reward ourselves with easy points in transition.

Jaime Uhr-Henry (16 points, 19 rebounds, 5 blocks), Jake Mawby (20 points, 9 rebounds) and Michael Hardman (18 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists) were fantastic against Coburg and it was also a delight to see Austin Foxwell from our U18.1s team play 20 minutes, score 13 points and make much older opponents very uncomfortable with his ball handling, shooting, playmaking and overall confidence; another proof that the junior program is filled with talent that we are hoping to nurture and base future YL teams on.

Craigieburn will be coming to EDSC determined to cause an upset as the Eagles are trying to get out of the bottom 4 and avoid having to fight for their position in the division in next season’s grading tournament.

We understand our opponents will be highly motivated, but on our part, we have to keep winning games because we want to finish as high on the ladder as possible and try to get a home finals game.

Last time we played the Eagles, we won 86-76 behind a great game from Jaime Uhr-Henry (23 points, 17 rebounds) and Sam Holland (17 points, 9 rebounds).

There’s only three rounds left, so there’s everything to play for and we need to be fully prepared, physically and mentally, for some very tough games; as mentioned before, our defence has to be full of intensity and cause opponents to take bad shots, make bad passes and get out of their comfort zone.

We know we can do this and the boys will be eager to show that on the court in every possession.
