COACHES CORNER – PREVIEW FROM THE COACH

Welcome to all of our Boomers fans as we commence the penultimate month of the regular season back at the Heartland of Bulleen Basketball for a rare occasion. With games against teams currently placed 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th ahead of us on the schedule, a finals berth is still well within our reach having won 5 of our last 6 games including a doubleheader last weekend

Having built a level of rigidity within our defensive style and framework since I’ve taken over coaching the team in round eight has allowed our offensive talents to flourish but most rewarding has been the smiles and self -belief elevate on a weekly basis built on hard work and discipline. For the month of June we notched a 4-1 win/loss record conceding just 76 points against in our wins and managing a healthy 91.25 points for.

The pleasing aspect has been the spread of scorers and night to night contributions being shared amongst the group. To have captain Evan Solakidis stand up against Warrnambool last Saturday then have a quieter Sunday afternoon and rookie Connor Makarounis light up the scoreboard for a career high 16pts is an example of what continues to keep us in the hunt for what many outsiders would have considered a write off six weeks ago.

On the home front a special congratulations goes to Peter Deng who was acknowledged by the league for his efforts in Round 12 being named to the Blue Carpet after a super consistent weekend.

Tonight we welcome the Shepparton Gators, who are another country Vic stalwart in basketball circles achieving significant success in the early 2000s at Championship level and arrive top of the table not having lost a game since May 7th against RMIT in Melbourne.

Led by import Derek Murphy (17.2ppg & 9.2rpg) who offers size at the three spot, they have a strong support cast with young NZ native Joshua Kooiman chipping in with 14.3ppg, Nick Dodd 13.75ppg and veteran combo guard Matt Bartlett continues to add value with 11ppg & 5.4apg.

We hope to hear the crowd rocking and invite everyone to stick around after the game as the players will be happy to spend 10 minutes out on the court chatting to the fans and getting some shots up with kids after the final buzzer.
