It’s an exciting time to be a part of Baylor University LHSON. We are on the verge of some monumental changes at the school, some of which are highlighted in this edition of Learn.Lead.Serve., and some of which we can only look forward to announcing soon.

For starters, we officially launched our Going for the Gold Gala 2014 fundraising event with a special invitation-only reception, hosted by our longtime partners at Baylor Scott & White Health. Baylor University President and Chancellor Ken Starr was on hand to encourage our supporters, announcing Olympic gold medalist and Baylor mom Mary Lou Retton as our keynote speaker.

The reception energized our support base and set a very optimistic tone for our upcoming gala event, which you will find advertised in this issue of the magazine. Save the date for May 3, 2014, as we plan to convene at the Omni Dallas Hotel downtown for an evening of merrymaking and Baylor pride, all dedicated to raising scholarship money for deserving LHSON nursing students.

The unmet student financial need at our nursing school is great, to say the least. A transformative Baylor education requires much resources as we strive for academic excellence and student engagement.

Of this past semester’s 360 undergraduate junior and senior nursing students, 173 (or about 50%) had unfunded tuition needs after all financial awards were distributed. The total unmet need for those 173 students came to $3.645 million, or about $21,000 per student.

Our Going for the Gold Gala is only one way we have to bridge this gap. However, it

does not solve all of our problems. In fact, if you took the $500,000 we raised at either of our last two galas, and earned a reasonable 5% on that endowment annually, you would only be able to impact the funding needs of one or two students at LHSON per semester.

I don’t mean to trivialize the impact of our event, but the magnitude of our mission is great.

That said, our spring semester is ripe with promise. I am pleased to say that at the October meeting of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program was granted an initial five-year full accreditation, extending to December 31, 2018. This accreditation effectively recognizes our program as meeting the highest standards in nursing education. We are also working on transformative changes in our graduate programs to better address our changing healthcare system and nursing practice of the future.

In addition, we welcome four new faculty members who joined us this year, each bringing in their unique strengths and areas of expertise. Please join me in welcoming Robin Caldwell, Renee’ Jones, Julie Millenbruch and Cathy Miller to the LHSON family. In this issue, you can read more about Dr. Millenbruch in the “Learn” feature.

As I suggested in my opening paragraph, still more is in store for the future at LHSON as we strive to address our vision for Pro Futuris.

Gala Continues to Generate Star Power 2014 KEYNOTE SPEAKER SHINES BRIGHT LIGHT ON ANNUAL FUNDRAISER Take an Olympic gold medalist, add in a heavy dose of Baylor green and gold, and you have the third annual LHSON Going for the Gold Gala, scheduled for May 3, 2014, at the Omni Dallas Hotel in downtown Dallas.

Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton has been secured as the event’s keynote speaker.

“We are thrilled Mary Lou Retton agreed to be our next gala speaker,” said Janis Kovar, LHSON’s director of development. “She’s an incredible example of dedication to a goal, and her daughter attends Baylor. I think Baylor people really rally around an event when Baylor people are involved.”

If the last two galas were any indication, raising more than $1 million in combined scholarship funds for Baylor nursing students, this year’s event should be another smashing success.

“Our need for scholarships is great, and without financial assistance, many of our nursing students would not be able to attend LHSON,” said Ms. Kovar.

The upcoming Going for the Gold Gala 2014 was launched with an invitation-only reception held on November 12, 2013, at the Belo Mansion, hosted by Baylor Scott & White Health.

In the invitation letter to gala supporters, Judge Ken Starr, president and chancellor of Baylor University, and Joel Allison, CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health, wrote: “We prayerfully hope that you will join us as we give of our time, talents and treasures to ensure that the gala continues to provide a golden opportunity to advance the Baylor name in the Metroplex.”

The reception, spearheaded by John McWhorter, president of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, celebrated the partnership between LHSON and Baylor.

Prior to their merger, Baylor Health Care System and Scott & White Healthcare both had long histories of supporting LHSON. “They have both been tremendous partners with the nursing school,” said Ms. Kovar.

The 2014 Going for the Gold Gala will raise muchneeded scholarship funds through a combination of named scholarship opportunities, table sponsorships and individual donations, as well as auction and event ticket proceeds.

In addition to being a Baylor parent, Ms. Retton catapulted to international fame by winning the all-around gold medal in women’s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, becoming the first American woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics. She also won silver medals for the team and vault events and bronze medals for the uneven bars and floor exercise events. Her five medals were the most won by any athlete at the 1984 Olympics. Today she is in great demand as a motivational speaker and travels the world as a fitness ambassador promoting the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise.

Dr. Claudia Beal Helps Women Detect Stroke FAST Claudia C. Beal, PhD, RN, assistant professor at LHSON, recently presented the results of her study “Delayed Hospital Arrival among Women with Acute Ischemic Stroke: Cognitive and Behavioral Responses to Symptoms” at the 2013 American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions. This year’s sessions, held in Dallas, Texas, were attended by more than 18,000 people from 105 countries.

said Dr. Beal. The council, a member organization within the American Heart Association, promotes excellence in nursing for cardiovascular patients and advocates integrating cardiovascular research into the AHA’s national research agenda.

For her study, Dr. Beal interviewed 80 women admitted to a large medical center for acute ischemic stroke, examining the cause and severity of the women’s stroke symptoms and their reactions to the symptoms. Of these women, only 25% who experienced numbness or weakness in their arm, leg or face correctly attributed those symptoms to stroke; only a third who had trouble speaking or understanding what was going on around them attributed their symptoms to stroke. “This finding is of concern because these are the most common stroke symptoms,” said Dr. Beal.

While 79 of the 80 women in the study had at least one stroke risk factor, such as hypertension, diabetes or preexisting cardiovascular disease, only about one-quarter thought they were at risk for stroke. Seventy percent did not know about a medication to treat stroke.

An intravenous medication called tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) has been shown to reduce stroke-related disability, but it must be given within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. Dr. Beal found that 55% of the women in her study arrived at the hospital more than three hours after they first noticed symptoms, too late for them to receive t-PA. There were differences between women who arrived at the hospital within three hours of symptom onset and women who arrived after three hours in how they responded to stroke symptoms. The women with later arrival were more likely to rest in response to symptoms, take a wait-andsee approach and try to hide their symptoms from other people. These behaviors may have contributed to later hospital arrival.

“More work needs to be done to educate women about stroke,” said Dr. Beal. “If more women are aware that a treatment exists, they may seek help sooner.” The AHA and American Stroke Association are promoting stroke awareness through the Spot a Stroke FAST campaign (FAST representing Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time to call 9-1-1).

In God’s Family, Anything Is Possible MEET NEW FACULTY MEMBER DR. JULIE MILLENBRUCH

I

t was a God thing,” said Dr. Julie Millenbruch, RN, CRRN, of her unusual path to full-time lecturer at LHSON. Indeed, it was a series of conspicuous coincidences that led her to the school from associate chief nurse for education and research at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, only a few months ago.

Dr. Millenbruch was deeply involved in a number of high-profile projects for the VA Medical Center when she decided to sell her condominium and move to a nearby community.

That was in May of 2013. Dr. Millenbruch had just purchased tickets to visit her son, Alex, daughter-in-law, Michelle, and one-and-a-halfyear-old granddaughter, Megyn, for Mother’s Day in Texas.

“Two years ago, I had visited my Dallas family around Easter and met with Dr. Martha Bradshaw, LHSON interim dean, as part of that trip,” Dr. Millenbruch said.

“Although I had already taken the job at the VA,

we had a nice visit and toured the school; that was the extent of it.”

Yet, unbeknownst to Dr. Millenbruch, the earlier visit to Dallas had grander repercussions.

Just before her visit in May, an offer came in on her condo. With plane tickets already purchased, the deal would have to wait for her return to close.

Then, she received an email from Dr. Linda Plank, RN, NEA-BC, LHSON associate dean of academic affairs, inquiring about her availability and interest in accepting a full-time faculty position.

“I had always wanted to live closer to my son and his family and be in a warmer climate,” said Dr. Millenbruch, “but I never thought it was actually going to happen. Now, here I was selling my condo, within a few days of leaving to visit Dallas, and a job offer comes in, based on a visit I had made two years earlier.”

Dr. Millenbruch agreed to meet with Dr. Plank. No commitments were made, but the door was now open.

After returning to Wisconsin, Dr. Millenbruch sold her condo and prayed for direction. Stirred by the offer and certain of God’s guidance, she called her son to inquire about finding a home in Texas. Her son called her with a reasonable option in Fairview, Texas, and Dr. Millenbruch put a contract on the home, sight unseen.

“I’m a plodder and planner,” she said, “not an impulsive person at all. I believe God was at work in my life, and I decided to make the move.”

She bought the home, called Dr. Plank to say she’d be moving to Texas and asked if the job offer still stood. It did.

On arrival, Dr. Millenbruch interviewed at LHSON; a day later, July 12—her birthday—she interviewed in Waco; within two weeks, she was offered the job and accepted.

Two years after signing on with Milwaukee’s VA Medical Center, Dr. Millenbruch was an LHSON lecturer.

Leaving on a High Note

D

uring her two years at the VA Medical Center, Dr. Millenbruch made a mark. As associate chief nurse for education and research, Dr. Millenbruch oversaw the education program for 730 RNs, plus nurse assistants and LPNs, at the hospital and its four outlying satellite clinics.

To strengthen the organization’s baccalaureate nursing workforce, Dr. Millenbruch and colleagues applied for a national Veterans Health Administration (VHA) grant to fund a post-baccalaureate nurse residency program. The grant would provide more than $1 million to fund a full-time program director and six nurse residents each year for three years.

The grant was funded and the program was instituted, one of 11 nursing residency pilot programs launched by the VHA to improve veteran-centered nursing nationwide.

The following year, she cowrote a grant to fund a nursing academic partnership with Milwaukee’s Marquette University to prepare baccalaureate nurses for specialized veterans’ care. That grant was funded, and in May, just before Dr. Millenbruch left for Dallas, the medical center received $5 million.

“Caring for veterans is a special business,” said Dr. Millenbruch. “Many are victims of war trauma and suffer from sensory deficits such as hearing loss due to blast injuries, multiple amputations and psychological conditions not common to civilians.”

Her work at the VA Medical Center also included coleading a team to design a $1.7 million state-of-the-art high-fidelity simulation lab, occupying one wing of the medical center’s 10th floor. The project was approved shortly before she left and went out for formal bid just before Christmas.

A Fresh Start in Dallas

W

ith her first semester teaching undergraduate leadership and management complete, Dr. Millenbruch looks forward to new challenges with LHSON. “The spirit of innovation is strong at Baylor, and our leadership is committed to turning out high-quality nursing graduates,” she said.

Dr. Millenbruch will again teach leadership and management this spring, expecting nearly 100 students to attend the hybrid course, which involves one-half of the curriculum presented in class, with the other half delivered via distance learning.

In addition to her class instruction, Dr. Millenbruch also expects to continue her association with the VA nursing community.

LHSON sponsored her to attend the “Joining Forces to Restore Lives” conference hosted by the University of South Florida in Tampa last October. The conference spotlighted nursing education and research in veterans’ health as supported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in Washington, DC. “I couldn’t be more delighted and privileged to be part of this faculty,” Dr. Millenbruch said.

Since coming to Texas in July, she is finally settling in.

“I’ve joined a Methodist church. I’m getting involved in some professional writing and research projects. I’ve continued my service with the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education… and best of all, I’m enjoying living in a warmer climate and being closer to my son’s family in Texas,” she said. “Of course, I miss my Chicago family very much, but I expect to be a frequent visitor!”

In addition to her Texas family, Dr. Millenbruch also has a son, Zachary, and daughter-in-law, Misty, who live in Chicago.

They have three children, Logan (4), Lorelei (2) and Adaline (2 months).

From Dr. Millenbruch’s perspective, God certainly has a way of looking after His family.

Baylor Nurses Stand Out, Generation After Generation Over the years, the names and faces have changed, along with the theories and practices of the nursing profession. However, one thing remains the same: a Baylor nursing education has always produced the best nurses in their time. Read on to review the legacy of nursing leadership that is the Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

The early 1900s

The class of 1910

The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing began more than 104 years ago as the Nurses’ Training School of the Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium. The sanitarium was the clinical facility for the Baylor University College of Medicine. The school enrolled its first class in 1909. Nurses during these early decades of the twentieth century would have cared for many patients suffering from bacterial infections and diseases such as rheumatic fever, measles, whooping cough and scarlet fever. Influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis were then the primary causes of death. From 1918 through 1919, the great influenza pandemic killed more than 500,000 people in the US alone.

The 1920s

In 1921, the Baptist General Convention consolidated the Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium and the professional schools—medical, dental, pharmacy and nursing. The hospital became Baylor Hospital, and the nursing school became the Baylor Hospital School of Nursing.

Nurses during this decade worked in a medical environment undergoing exciting change and scientific advancement. A partial list of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine laureates from 1920 to 1930 underscores the tremendous achievements during this decade: 1923 Frederick G. Banting, John Macleod for the discovery of insulin 1924 Willem Einthoven for the discovery of the mechanism of the electrocardiogram 1927 Julius Wagner-Jauregg for healing general paralysis by infection with malaria 1929 Christiaan Eijkman, Sir Frederick Hopkins for discovery of various vitamins 1930 Karl Landsteiner for discovery of human blood types 12

The 1930s

During the 1930s, the nursing school’s name changed again, to Baylor University School of Nursing. The Great Depression had settled heavily on the US, and the national income was less than half of what it had been in 1929. In several states, as many as 40% of the people were on relief. How to pay for medical needs was a big health concern, and Baylor-educated nurses would probably have cared for patients facing dire financial situations.

In the first three years of the 1930s, the leading causes of death were heart disease, cancer, pneumonia and Young Women’s infectious and parasitic diseases, including influenza, Missionary Auxiliary, 1933 tuberculosis and syphilis. Polio was a huge concern. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a polio victim, helped create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis’s March of Dimes campaign in 1938, which raised funds for polio victims and for polio vaccine research.

Penicillin, originally discovered by French scientist Ernest Duchesne in 1896, was rediscovered in 1928 by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming. In 1939, Howard Walter Florey and a team of researchers at Oxford University made significant progress in showing penicillin’s ability to kill infectious bacteria. This discovery eventually changed medicine forever.

The 1940s

Zora McAnelly Fiedler became superintendent of nursing and dean of the Baylor University School of Nursing in 1943. She accepted the position with the goal of establishing a baccalaureate school of nursing. Throughout the nation, nursing education was becoming more standardized and professionalized. The demands of World War II focused medical and research efforts, resulting in the increased use of the miracle drugs penicillin and the sulfonamides, new medical technology based on radioactive byproducts of the atomic bomb, better vaccines and improved hygienic measures. The reduction in infant mortality and deaths from infectious diseases caused a rise in the average age of the population. From 1940 to 1950, the percentage of the population over age 64 increased from 6.9% to 8.2%.

The 1950s

The first baccalaureate degrees in nursing were awarded from the Baylor University School of Nursing in 1954. Nurses were able to use new medications to treat a range of diseases, including infections, glaucoma and arthritis. New vaccines were developed that prevented dreaded childhood diseases, including polio. A person born in 1950 could now expect to live a full 20 years longer than one born in 1900.

Correspondingly, diseases of the elderly—cancer, heart disease and stroke— became more prevalent.

The 1960s

In 1964, the Baylor University School of Nursing became the first in Texas to institute an integrated nursing curriculum. The first full accreditation was awarded by the National League of Nursing, and enrollment grew to 200 students. Medical scientists developed equipment such as cryosurgical probes, used to remove or deaden diseased tissue by freezing, the home dialysis machine, used to treat patients with kidney failure and the portable electrocardiograph, used to monitor electrical impulses in the heart. The number of hospitals in Dallas continued to grow. Presbyterian Hospital opened in 1966, Children’s Medical Center opened in 1967, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas expanded. Dallas was becoming a national center in medical care and biomedical research, and Baylor nurses were in the thick of it.

The 1970s through the 1990s

Nursing students began a 30-year tradition of missionary service in Juarez, Mexico. That tradition of mission has now grown to encompass work throughout the world, including Africa, India, Vietnam and China. By the 1970s, the medical and health industry had become second only to the military industry in size and cost.

A deadly epidemic disease, AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, scarred the 1980s.

AIDS, first reported in 1981, is caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, which attacks selected cells in the immune system, leading to its inability to resist disease-causing organisms and certain cancers. By 1989, no effective cure or vaccine existed for AIDS. The Baylor University School of Nursing graduate school opened in 1990. It currently offers the Master of Science in Nursing for family nurse practitioners (FNP), neonatal nurse practitioners (NNP) and doctors of nursing practice for nurse midwifery (DNP). In 2014, the family nurse practitioner and neonatal nurse practitioner programs will transition to a DNP degree, and a new Master of Science in Nursing degree will begin enrollment for Nursing Leadership and Innovation.

The school was renamed the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing in honor of the ongoing support and $13 million endowment gift from 1992 Baylor University Alumna Honoris Causa Louise Herrington Ornelas. In 2009, the school introduced the FastBacc program, a 12-month accelerated bachelor’s degree. FastBacc provides non–nursingdegreed individuals a streamlined trajectory into a career in nursing and addresses the nationwide shortage of nurses.

Nurses now and in the future will benefit from the past decades of medical discovery and science, including the mapping of the genetic blueprint of a human being. The Human Genome Project, completed in April 2003, produced the first complete sequences of individual human genomes. The data is used worldwide in biomedical science, anthropology, forensics and other branches of science.

A Superhero Effort

The “Cape Project,” as it has come to be known, is the product of a simple inquiry to the fundraising office of Children’s Medical Center

by Steven Mallow, S2 class treasurer, regarding volunteer opportunities at the hospital. Mr. Mallow latched onto the idea when Sophia Sindalovsky, corporate engagement coordinator at the hospital, suggested making superhero capes for children staying there. Mr. Mallow presented the concept to Jordan Loetscher, S2 class president, and Cody Reynolds, S2 student life officer, who immediately bought into the idea.

“We all agreed it would be a fun project that could have a positive impact on the lives of kids facing serious illness or injury,” said Ms. Loetscher.

To generate class enthusiasm for the project, Mr. Reynolds spearheaded the production of a promotional video and posted it on YouTube and Facebook.

The video was aired the first day of school at convocation, creating an instant buzz among S2 class members.

“We originally wanted to dress up as superheroes ourselves and distribute the capes,” Mr. Reynolds said, “but hospital rules prohibited it. So we immediately got to the business of making capes.”

A production room was set up and equipped with donated sewing machines, multicolored fabric and Velcro ties. Each Monday for the next several weeks, students created capes using a simple, replicable pattern, emblazoned with a lightning bolt streaked across the center.

“The pattern was generic, so as not to infringe on any copyrights,” said

Ms. Loetscher. “The Velcro ties met the basic safety requirements.”

According to Ms. Loetscher, it takes about two hours to make one cape, so students often had to begin a cape only to finish it the following week.

The goal was to create 50 capes to present to the hospital by the end of November. To keep the production rolling, donation boxes were set out and money and materials flowed in from all directions, including students, parents, faculty and staff.

“I’ve never sewn anything in my life before,” said Mr. Reynolds. “It was pretty cool to see a cape come out of nothing. The experience was definitely rewarding.”

By mid-December, more than 30 capes were delivered—a superhero effort if there ever was one.

Joy to the World There are Christmas parties. And then, there are Christmas parties. One usually thinks of carols, twinkling lights, decorative food displays and party favors in relation to the traditional holiday celebration. But for LHSON faculty, staff and students, a different sort of Christmas party was held leading into the winter holiday—a “packing party” dedicated to preparing simple gifts for Operation Christmas Child (OCC).

Adopted by LHSON staff as a 2013 fall service project, OCC is an outreach of Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, a USbased organization that works to proclaim God’s love in needy communities around the globe. In 1990, a group started filling shoeboxes with gifts, both whimsical and practical, for distribution to needy children.

The outreach grew and today OCC reaches 130 nations, involving volunteers from everywhere, including LHSON. “OCC opened a processing center here in Dallas recently,” said De-De Henson, LHSON academic support specialist. “When we heard about it, we sent volunteers to the center to assist. But the bigger effort centered on creating gift shoeboxes to send out into the community.”

To open the mission to more students, faculty and staff, Ms. Henson and her team placed OCC collection sites around the school, where toys, hygiene items, school supplies and other sundries could be gathered, along with empty shoeboxes and similar-sized containers.

Monetary donations were also collected to cover the $7 shipping cost per box.

As the raw materials poured in, Ms. Henson scheduled a packing party for November 6.

Each packer was encouraged to insert a personally signed Christmas card with each box packed. In addition, photos of students holding “Merry Christmas” signs were included with the contents.

“The fun and fellowship we shared in packing those shoeboxes were contagious,” Ms. Henson said. “One faculty member and her daughter who had participated in OCC events at a church they once attended heard about our efforts and independently donated five completed boxes to the cause.”

By the end of the day, 69 shoeboxes were packed and ready to deliver to the processing center. Needless to say, a joyful time was had by all who attended the party.

Pure Nursing

Imagine a desert island in the middle of a booming city, where healthy food is in scarce supply. Is it possible? The answer is yes, according to the Dallas Coalition for Hunger Solutions (www.dallashungersolutions.org).

Interested faculty, senior lecturer Barbara Devitt, MSN, RN, and lecturer Marilyn Hightower, MSN, RN, acted on the opportunity offered

by Dean Shelley Conroy to partner with the Texas Hunger Initiative. The initiative strives to promote healthy nutrition options to these isolated islands in our city.

“Our goal is to educate citizens, primarily parents and school-age children, on proper dietary choices for healthy living,” said Ms. Hightower.

Ms. Devitt commented that increases in type 2 diabetes due to poor eating choices among adults, and more alarmingly among children, moved the LHSON Community Health Nursing and Pediatric Nursing faculty, along with nursing students, to partner with area schools and clinics to bring healthy eating presentations to parents and students in underserved neighborhoods.

“Kids with poor nutrition experience headaches, fatigue, sleepiness and restlessness throughout the school day,” Ms. Hightower said. “Kids who eat a healthy breakfast every morning tend to miss fewer days of school, score higher on exams and are better able to pay attention in class.”

Ms. Devitt and Ms. Hightower remarked that preparing students to address nutrition issues within the community exemplifies the mission of LHSON. Both Ms. Devitt and Ms. Hightower have observed that low-income families with

limited resources often make unhealthy food choices that may include high-fat and highcarbohydrate foods, such as sugary cereals, soft drinks, candy and fast foods.

“It is possible to feel hungry even on a full stomach,” said Ms. Devitt. “A highcarbohydrate diet may fill you up, but you soon crash. Smaller amounts of fat, more protein, vegetables and fruit would be much better choices.”

Last spring, Troy Aikman was a celebrity in attendance at an event at the Arapaho Classical Magnet School, a designated Healthy Zone School in Richardson, Texas.

The United Way of THIS IS WHAT Metropolitan Dallas, the Cooper LHSON IS ALL Clinic and Troy Aikman sponsor the Healthy Zone School ABOUT. Initiative. The initiative provides funding and resources to schools selected to become a Healthy Zone School.

Ms. Devitt said that in promoting the Healthy Zone School Initiative to prevent childhood obesity that may result in diabetes, nursing students emphasized healthy nutrition at the Arapaho Classical Magnet School, using food models and the “My Plate” diagram to demonstrate correct food serving portions. Games, in the form of exercise, were demonstrated to the children, and children were provided with healthy recipes to take home to their parents.

“This is nursing at its purest,” said Ms. Devitt. “Reaching the community in a proactive manner to teach and prevent disease is what nurses have always done.” This is what LHSON is all about.

After an intense spring semester of classes, study, homework and tests, nothing lets off steam better than an all-out, slip-and-slide, waterballoon war. Diadelagua, or “day of water,” is an LHSON tradition started a few years ago in response to the Waco campus’s Diadeloso, the day of the bear. With “The weather the nursing school in Dallas, was perfect: 85 located many students miss degrees and out on the annual sunny.” Waco celebration.

Diadelagua, which is an actual Asian holiday, gives them a day of their own to celebrate. About 90 students attended the affair.

“This year, our timing was a little off,” said David Kemerling, director of student ministries.

“We originally planned it for the last day of May, but the temperature had dropped to 41 degrees.

So we rescheduled for September, and the weather was perfect: 85 degrees and sunny.”

The Baylor University LHSON Parents Network donated a movie-style popcorn popper and helped serve food. Watermelon, hot dogs, popsicles, volleyball and Ping-Pong rounded out the day’s attractions. Many students, just getting out of class, dove into the action wearing scrubs and, while most faculty members simply came to cheer on the participants, Mr. Kemerling actually joined in, donning a Hawaiian shirt and black trunks.

Splash Down: Diadelagua!

Halloween with Ronald McDonald Leave it to LHSON nursing students to turn volunteer service into a fun event. The Baylor Student Nurses Association recently adopted the local Ronald McDonald House as a club service partner, collecting books and videos to share with children receiving treatment for serious illnesses or injuries at Dallas-area hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House provides affordable, temporary housing to families of children in treatment.

This Halloween, BSNA students participated in a fall festival and Halloween party on October 24. Club president Allison James and community chair Lacy Stone, along with faculty sponsor and lecturer Beth Hultquist, MSN, RN, CNE, led a contingent of students in costume to help run games, serve refreshments and assist with crafts. More than 25 students attended the event. The children and family members in attendance all had a grand time.

STUDENT LIFE

Community Nursing through Clinical Service One of the goals of a Baylor nursing education is to develop the character of a servant through regular community service. Each year, a number of local community health clinics benefit from the volunteer activities of LHSON students.

The Agape Clinic in Dallas is one of them. Dedicated to improving the health of medically underserved people, the clinic is located in the basement of Grace United Methodist Church, walking distance from the Baylor University Medical Center campus. Since the 1990s, LHSON students have volunteered at the clinic. Lauren Smith and Trenton Raff are just two current students who spend Saturdays working with refugees and assisting the medical staff.

QuestCare Clinic in Lake Highlands, an outreach ministry of north-Dallas–based Watermark Community Church, is another. Laura Trent, RN, class of ’13, manages the clinic, which is located in a mixed-demographic neighborhood where 49% of the children live below the federal poverty level. Since joining the clinic, Laura has

recruited several LHSON student volunteers to assist in welcoming patients, signing them in, performing general physical assessments and assisting on simple procedures.

Dallas Life is one of the very large housing and healthcare ministries that our students utilize for clinical rotations and volunteer opportunities, and a place to learn that many people are homeless and without convenient lifestyles. Robin Caldwell, new faculty member, is the clinical coordinator for Dallas Life. Last semester, the Community and Clinical students passed out hundreds of baggies to faculty, staff and friends so that the baggies could be filled with convenience items such as soap, hand wipes, lotions, socks and, of course, Bible scriptures, to be given to the homeless men, women, children and families of the Dallas Metroplex.

Along with learning the value of service, LHSON students promote goodwill on behalf of the school while putting some of what they learn in the classroom into actual practice. And so, the blessings travel full circle.

Champions in South Dallas Mallory Ramsey is the president of her senior class. Before coming to the LHSON Dallas campus to pursue her nursing degree, she attended school and ran cross-country for the Baylor Bears in Waco. Now, she runs to South Dallas several times a month to pour into the lives of lowincome children through Champions of Hope, a ministry that focuses on Christian mentorship, discipleship and leadership by building after-school relationships.

Mallory’s experience with the ministry has since moved her to encourage other students to join the program. Much as Paul took Timothy under his wing, Champions of Hope impacts lives through acts of service by students such as Mallory.

After graduating from LHSON’s rigorous 12-month accelerated FastBacc program and passing her nursing licensing exam, Melissa Wilson, along with her husband, was on a much-deserved vacation to Peru. Several hours into the flight, pandemonium struck.

One of the passengers, a woman, had fainted and fallen to the floor. People were frantically calling for a doctor or nurse. Ms. Wilson’s husband looked at her and said, “Melissa, you have to go! Go! Go! Go!” All of Ms. Wilson’s training took over, and she ran to the woman lying on the floor.

“The moment I jumped out of my chair and rushed to her side, not knowing what I’d be facing, I knew this is what I had been training for,” said Ms. Wilson.

Ms. Wilson immediately went into “go mode” and asked the onlookers to move aside. A flight attendant retrieved a medical kit. Ms. Wilson began going through the steps her nursing education had taught her. She checked the woman’s blood pressure and heart rate. Both were extremely low. The woman began waking up, so Ms. Wilson asked her to lie still while she checked for spinal injuries, head contusions or other injuries, as the woman had landed heavily on the floor.

Ms. Wilson gave the woman a bottle of water to help raise her blood pressure. Ms. Wilson asked about any medications the woman might be taking. The woman mentioned she had begun taking Diamox, commonly used as a preventative for altitude sickness, the day before in preparation for the altitude change in Peru. Diamox can also act as a diuretic, so Ms. Wilson asked the woman if she had been drinking more fluids. She replied that she hadn’t been good about drinking water.

“Bingo! I now knew the cause and how to treat her symptoms,” said Ms. Wilson. “I sat with her on the floor of that plane for nearly 45 minutes, encouraging her to drink water and not overexert herself.”

Eventually, the woman’s color came back, and her blood pressure and heart rate returned to normal. Ms. Wilson

walked the woman back to her seat and told her how she needed to continue taking care of herself.

In the meantime, the woman’s husband was an absolute wreck. “I was able to calm him down while taking care of his wife simultaneously, something we definitely learned in clinicals,” laughs Ms. Wilson. “I worked extremely hard during the FastBacc program, but I realize now that the faculty pushed us so hard for moments like these, moments when you know you made a difference in someone’s life.

And moments when you know God had this plan for you all along,” said Ms. Wilson. “I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be, and it’s because of the LHSON faculty.”

Emily Maddock Demonstrates Care for a Challenging Population Emily Maddock, an LHSON May 2013 graduate, recently won the Texas School Nurse Organization (TSNO) Poster Award based on her research, “Nursing Education and Culturally Competent Care of LGBTQ Students.”

The LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning) population is at high risk for suicide, homelessness, mental health issues, sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse and bullying. Ms. Maddock’s research, begun while a student at LHSON, focused on developing concrete suggestions for school nurses to implement in caring for this special population.

Her award-winning poster was on display at the TSNO annual conference, and Ms. Maddock answered questions and gave suggestions to other school nurses on care practices. “These students are often afraid to confide in a healthcare professional, so my most important suggestions concerned ways to make school clinics less threatening and judgmental,” said Ms. Maddock.

Ms. Maddock, now working as a school nurse at J. J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas, sees firsthand the special issues of LGBTQ students. She is involved with the school’s GayStraight Alliance. “One of my most important responsibilities to them is assuring them the clinic is a safe place to get reliable information,” she said.

Ms. Maddock has many other responsibilities as a school nurse serving a student population of 2,100 students. “It’s an intense environment.

I use all the things I learned in nursing school.

I treat students with anxiety issues, seizures, emergency injuries and various psychiatric issues,” she said.

Many students do not have health insurance and do not know how the health system works.

They are unaware the emergency room is not the first place to go for a sinus infection or other nonemergency health issue. A nearby clinic might be a better choice.

“Teaching is my favorite part of the job. I’m teaching young adults to be in charge of their own health,” said Ms. Maddock. “God placed me in this school for a reason. I love my job. It’s what I wanted to do.”

North Texas Giving Day 2013 a Great Success “LHSON’s third year participating in the North Texas Giving Day was a great success,” said Janis Kovar, director of development for LHSON. North Texas Giving Day, presented annually by the Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT), is an all-day event encouraging online donations to more than 1,000 North Texas nonprofits. Those donations are amplified by bonus funds and prizes provided by the CFT and its donors.

During this year’s Giving Day, held on September 19, LHSON raised more than $52,000 from Baylor donors, along with $3,284.80 in bonus funds and $1,000 in prize money from CFT. Such success did not occur by accident. The LHSON community worked together to encourage giving from the faculty, staff and students. Class challenges were set, and the winning class, J2, received a pizza and ice cream party.

“Not only did we meet the goals and challenges we had, we earned the Golden Ticket prize for the 9:00–10:00 pm slot. This is the first time we’ve received a prize, and it was an alum’s gift that gave us an extra $1,000,” said Ms. Kovar.

Seventeen Golden Ticket prizes of $1,000 were awarded hourly from random drawings of the nonprofits that received donations during that hour.

Haywoods Receive 2013 Baylor Parents of the Year Award

Kari and Steve Haywood were selected as 2013 Baylor Parents of the Year for exemplifying loyalty and service to Baylor.

“They are representatives of the ideals we hold so dear here at Baylor—Christian commitment to service,” said Judy Maggard, director of the Baylor Parents Network.

Student Level Challenge: The J2 class won the student challenge with a 39.6% participation rate.

FastBacc was second with a 29.2% rate.

Alumni Challenge: LHSON alums met a challenge from one of their own—a $1,000 gift for endowed scholarship funds for LHSON students, if at least 75 alums made a gift of any amount. The alums surpassed this goal with a total of 82 gifts.

Student Gifts: 62 of 254 gifts were from students or parents of students.

Faculty/Staff/Other: 42 gifts from faculty and staff, 4 from staff located in Waco, 10 gifts from the Tyler area.

The Haywoods were recognized at halftime of the Baylor football game during the fall 2013 Parents Weekend. They join a long tradition of dedicated parents; the Parents of the Year award dates back at least 40 years.

The Haywoods currently serve as liaisons for the LHSON chapter of the Baylor Parents Network. Both Mr. and Mrs. Haywood believe passionately in the work the nursing school is doing and, in particular, the school’s focus on teaching students how to nurture and care for the whole person.

“I am impressed with the way the nursing school is carrying out Baylor’s mission and teaching their students to give compassionate care,” said Mr. Haywood. “Excellent teaching and training in a nurturing Christian environment is a strength of the LHSON program.”

The LHSON chapter of the Baylor Parents Network functions with a unique challenge, since the nursing school students are not on the main campus. “We focus on creating a sense of community for the students and their families,” said Mrs. Haywood. “Our chapter is able to support our nursing students and faculty because of the generous donations and help from our wonderful nursing student families. We want all of our families to be a part.”

Among the chapter’s many activities are coordinating the monthly First Call to Prayer meetings, hosting a welcome cookout for new students and families, organizing an appreciation lunch for faculty and staff, having a beforefinals breakfast each semester and other activities such as providing Valentine goodie bags for the students.

Mr. Haywood’s father was a Baylor graduate and an orthopedic surgeon with Scott & White Healthcare, which has now merged with Baylor Health Care System to form Baylor Scott & White Health. “My father emphasized bedside manner and caring for the whole person, so I am glad my daughter is learning that, too,” said Mr. Haywood.

Their daughter, Britney, will graduate from LHSON this May. As in so many Baylor stories, it’s a family affair. Jenna, the Haywoods’ older daughter, graduated from Baylor in December 2011. Mr. and Mrs. Haywood are both Baylor graduates. In addition to Mr. Haywood’s father, his mother and Mrs. Haywood’s brother and sister also graduated from Baylor.

Dr. Angela Barron McBride, RN, FAAN, distinguished professor, university dean emerita at Indiana University School of Nursing, presented “Orchestrating a Nursing Career for Leadership” to LHSON students and faculty on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Dr. McBride’s presentation outlined five career stages: preparation, independent contributions, development of a home institution setting, development of the field and healthcare, and the “gadfly” (or wise person) stage.

“I encourage people to think about what stage they are in and how to carefully orchestrate a career for success,” said Dr. McBride.

In prior years, Dr. McBride focused on leadership development, particularly within a nursing career. She is the author of The Growth and Development of Nurse Leaders, which won the 2011 PROSE (The American Publisher Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence) award for the category “Nursing and Allied Health.”

“I emphasize that leaders are not required to have an administrative title. Leadership can range from individual performance and productive teamwork to inspiring higher performance in others and creating enduring excellence,” said Dr. McBride.

Said Barbara Camune, DrPH, CNM, LHSON graduate program director, “Dr. McBride emphasized the importance of becoming an expert clinician during stage one of a nursing career, which really reinforced what we teach our students.”

Dr. McBride also challenged the audience to sustain career optimism. “I tell people to be careful how they think about things. It’s easy to get discouraged by what went wrong, rather than stay encouraged by what went right.”

LHSON’s Eta Gamma chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the international nursing honor society, sponsored the program.

New Resources Lift Learning Resource Center Extended staff hours and new equipment are already making a great impact on the usefulness of the LHSON Learning Resource Center, according to LRC director Susan Bader, MLS, AHIP. “We are always looking for ways to increase our services to students and faculty,” she said.

With the arrival of Roberta Black, library associate, students working on their research projects now have help in the evening.

Ms. Black staffs the LRC until 7:00 pm on Monday through Thursdays and 6:00 pm on Fridays. “Our students are discovering our extended staffing hours and really loving them,” said Ms. Bader.

Ms. Black has a background in teaching. She has a master’s degree from the Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie and a bachelor’s degree from the Ozark Bible Institute in Neosho, Missouri. She most recently taught music and computer skills for students in kindergarten though seventh grade at the Advantage Academy in Waxahachie. “I’m looking forward to helping the nursing students with their research projects,” said Ms. Black.

The LRC also recently received a grant from the Lucille W. and George R. Pattullo Fund

of the Dallas Foundation to buy new equipment, a SmartDock unit and a Kodak i1120 Automatic Document Feed to upgrade the LRC’s existing DLSG KIC BookEdge Plus full-color scanner system.

The SmartDock allows students to scan materials such as journal articles or class paperwork directly to their smartphone or tablet computer instead of to a portable drive. The Automatic Document Feed allows the user to automatically scan a stack of loose pages instead of having to raise the lid, place the individual page on the glass, scan and repeat the process for as many pages as needed.

“Students have been asking for these improvements, and now we have them,” said Ms. Bader. The extended hours and technological conveniences are affording students more time to focus on what really matters: learning to become great nurses.

Dr. McBride also serves as a member of the Indiana University Health Board and chairs the board’s Committee on Quality and Patient Safety. Her leadership experience

includes serving as president of Sigma Theta Tau International (1987–1989) during the building of the International Center for Nursing Scholarship in Indianapolis. For her career contributions, she has been honored with many awards and designated as a “Living Legend” by the American Academy of Nursing. In 2012, she received Indiana University’s President’s Medal for “sustained academic excellence.”
