Making an Impact at Home and Abroad

our efforts to show our Baylor pride.

In fact, we were recognized in 2015 for 100% giving participation in “Our Baylor Faculty, Staff and Retirees Campaign.”

Generosity was also evident on September 17, 2015 from donors who helped make an impact on North Texas Giving Day. In our third year to participate, we raised almost $44,000 from 247 donors in 18 hours.

Continuing the momentum, LHSON hosted Salute to Scholarships on November 11 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. The event recognized endowed scholarship donors and Going for the Gold Gala sponsors.

The patriotic themed dinner held on Veterans Day included over 150 guests, honored donors and their scholarship recipients.

howered in blessings from the community both regionally and globally, we have a great deal to be thankful for at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. We hold firmly to a favorite Bible verse that we used in our recent Christmas card, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV). These words echo throughout LHSON faculty and staff in

The event also launched the countdown to our 5th annual Going for the Gold Gala scheduled for Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Dallas Renaissance Hotel. We will salute our military and nursing veterans with keynote speaker Noah Galloway, a wounded U.S. Army war veteran hero as well as a finalist on the popular TV program “Dancing with the Stars.” Saralinda Garcia, a 2010 graduate of LHSON, will give her compelling testimony, having served 18 years in the Navy and as a medic during a tour in Iraq. In addition, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams (BU ‘13) will be our special guest. Emmy award-winning meteorologist, Pete Delkus, will serve as emcee, concluding the evening with our own “Dancing with the Starrs.” I hope you will join us for a memorable evening.

Garner and Baylor University $652,800 to partner with Bangalore Baptist Hospital Rebekah Ann Naylor School of Nursing. Funding will support building a Simulation Education and Research Centre for Nursing Excellence and safe living accommodations for up to 48 nurses in Bengaluru, India. Additionally, we received a Nursing Innovation Grant Program for Transition to Practice from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This grant will provide unique geriatric-focused experiences for our students through two Designated Education Units – 6 Roberts at Baylor University Medical Center Dallas and at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation – Dallas campus.

Lead.Serve.™, the last six months of 2015 has kept me traveling often to promote Baylor’s commitment to academic excellence. Along with other faculty, I attended the International Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing semiannual fall conference in Washington, DC. Internationally, I traveled to Hyderabad, India to attend the 2nd annual IndoGlobal Healthcare Summit & Expo 2015.

I served as a keynote speaker and spoke about Global Nursing Research, Education and Practice Partnerships and gave other relevant presentations at the Marigold Hotel by GreenPark. I also traveled to Hong Kong with some of our Baylor nursing students and faculty and met with colleagues at our partner school, the Nethersole School of Nursing, Chinese University of Hong Kong. In addition, we visited Hong Kong Baptist University and HKB Hospital, and traveled on to Nam Dinh Nursing University in Vietnam.

The vitality of our nursing school is stronger than ever, with great promise for a banner year in 2016! On behalf of all of us here at LHSON, thank you for your sustaining support. May our work continue to be worthy of His calling.

In early October, LHSON hosted a memorable White Coat Ceremony at East Dallas Christian Church.

STUDENT LIFE LHSON recognized National Midwifery Week October 4-10. The week creates an opportunity to spread the word about midwifery and educate women of all ages about vital information that affects their health and well-being.

The 2015 summer included a Harambee Festival which was hosted at LHSON where students could learn about ways to get involved.

In August, LHSON hosted the Fall 2015 J1 Orientation. Students toured the nursing school and heard from the Dean, faculty, staff and student orientation leaders.

An MSN in Leadership and Innovation orientation was hosted in August for another dynamic group of students excited to start the online program.

LHSON research students presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research 2015 in Spokane, Washington.

LHSON welcomed Dr. Rebekah Naylor, a distinguished missionary to India and surgeon. Her special visit was a time of reflection with students and faculty who participated in the India mission trip over the 2014 Christmas break.

LHSON senior students presented their research on the Challenges of Nursing in India at the British Council on Undergraduate Research in Winchester, England. They also enjoyed an excursion to Oxford University.

Geriatric Competency Validation Toolbox for New Nurse Graduates

B

aylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing has partnered with Baylor Scott & White Health North and Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation to prepare an evaluation model for the achievement of geriatric competencies by undergraduate pre-licensure nursing students. Specifically, a tool to measure geriatric competencies will be developed, tested, and validated. The nursing students participating in this project will be both those engaged in learning within the newly developed Designated Educational Units (DEUs) and those learning on other units within the same institutions. In total, approximately 350 students and 160 faculty and hospital partner staff will participate in either the pilot testing or validation phases of this comprehensive project. The final product will be a geriatric competency tool kit available for utilization by other nursing schools throughout the state of Texas.

The opportunity to then share these tools, techniques, and measurement capabilities with all the nursing schools in Texas is exciting. Nursing Professional Development for Baylor Scott & White Health and Associate Dean for Academic Partnerships for LHSON. “With the aging of the Baby Boomers, the need for nurses with refined knowledge and skills in the care of the older population across the healthcare continuum is accelerating at an incredible pace.

Addressing this need will take strong partnerships between service and academia. As recipients of the THECB grant, Baylor Scott & White Health and the LHSON are able to highlight their joint commitment for preparing new graduates for their future practice,” said Dora Bradley, PhD, RN, FAAN, Grant Co-Project Director, Vice-President of Nursing Professional Development, Baylor Scott & White Health and Associate Dean for Academic Partnerships, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

In October, LHSON organized two DEU kickoff events for students and participating preceptors. The first DEU event was held on the sixth floor of Roberts at Baylor University Medical Center Dallas and the second was at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation Dallas campus. The preceptors also received a specially designed lapel pin and a lunch to thank them for working with LHSON students.

“The grant evaluating committee recognized the importance of the scope of work laid out by Baylor University. Based on the committee’s feedback on the grant proposal, we have high expectations that the grant results will help transform acute health care delivery for the state’s aging population,” David Gardner, Deputy Commissioner for Academic Planning and Policy for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

New Community Clinical Experience “Dodie’s Bedroom”

Students at LHSON now have the opportunity to utilize “Dodie’s Bedroom” as a new Community Clinical Experience.

The furniture and accessories were generously donated by the family of Dodie Beasley, a long-time LHSON supporter, who passed away in 2015.

Appropriately named “Dodie’s Bedroom”, the clinical set-up is located in the dorm basement of the nursing school. The room simulates a “home environment” that most likely will be for an elderly person living in an “efficiency” type of apartment.

The room provides students with the opportunity to learn how to maneuver a patient in a wheelchair, turn an elderly patient in bed and assist on a bedside commode. The student will also learn to assist patients in and out of bed, using a sink, microwave and even cook from a wheelchair. Since there are stairs right across the hall from “Dodie’s Bedroom,” students can also learn how to teach patients to walk up and down stairs with a walker and cane.

Dr. Shelley Conroy will serve as the vice-president and presidentelect for the Texas Association of Deans and Directors of Professional Nursing Programs. Ensuring that professional nursing education in Texas is proactive, TADDPNP serves as the combined voice of TOBGNE and TOADN for 114 RN Educational Programs in Texas.

LHSON congratulates Dr. Linda Plank, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for completing the 2015 Cohort of Fellows for the AACN/Wharton Executive Leadership Program. This program is designed to provide advanced academic administrators with skills that will assist in elevating them to a higher level of leadership.

Dean Conroy, Dr. Plank, and Dr. Sudia attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing conference in Washington, DC along with other Texas Deans and they visited Capitol Hill.

Dr. Leslie Payne, Dr. Lyn Prater and Dr. Johnanna Hernandez from LHSON along with Dr. Deb Maitre, Dir. of Nursing at Baylor McKinney presented papers at the Sigma Theta Tau International 26th International Nursing Research Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Marilyn Hightower and Barbara Devitt gave a podium and poster presentation on the Integration of Social Justice Into a Population Based Nursing Experience at the 2015 NLN Nurse Educators Conference in the Rockies held in Breckenridge, Colorado.

During the May LHSON faculty meeting we were pleased to welcome Dr. Janet Bagby (featured in the middle) who gave a presentation on Baylor’s VETS program (Veteran Educational and Transition Services). Special thanks to Dr. Julie Millenbruch (left) for arranging the presentation and Dr. Conroy (right) for her continued support.

LHSON is proud to have eight faculty members recognized over the years as DFW Great 100 Nurses including: Barbara Devitt, Cheryl Tucker, Beckie Phillips, Linda Plank, Becky Althaus, Mary Ann Faucher, Nan Ketcham and Renee Jones. The prestigious event was held at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

LHSON received the 2015 Leadership in Undergraduate Research Award from Baylor University Undergraduate Research & Scholarly Achievement, Office of the Vice Provost for Research.

The award was presented to Dr. Conroy (far right) and Dr. Garner (not pictured) on April 22, 2015. LHSON was recognized for initiating multiple individual and team opportunities for hands-on undergraduate research, including field schools and international projects.

LHSON celebrated National Nurses Week May 6-12. The faculty and staff were treated to a luncheon and special recognition for retiring faculty members Dr. Barbara Camune and Valerie Trousdale, and outgoing Chair of the Faculty Organization, Melissa Neathery.

North Texas Giving Day Makes an Impact After a third straight year of shattering community giving day records, North Texas Giving Day returned for its seventh year on September 17, 2015 with more than 2,000 nonprofits including the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

The day included $2.2 million in bonus funds and prizes, and Donation Station events in five North Texas cities: Arlington, Dallas, Denton, Fort Worth and McKinney. Donations $25 -$50,000 were made from 6 a.m. to midnight on Giving Day. LHSON raised almost $44,000 from 247 donors during the 18-hour giving day.

“Every gift to LHSON helps students achieve their dreams of a nursing education,” said Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, Dean and Professor, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. “Participation in this event builds upon our 106 year tradition of integrating faith and academic excellence in nursing education, enabling us to provide transformational experiences for our students to realize their calling to Learn.Lead.Serve.™” “North Texas Giving Day is a day of celebration here in North Texas. Certainly it is for the nonprofits, some of whose years are made in a single day from the generosity of tens of thousands of donors,” said Brent Christopher, president and CEO, Communities Foundation of Texas and North Texas Giving Day founder. “And the cheer and goodwill extend to the community, too. From friends donating over coffee or at concerts to strangers congregating at Donation Station events, everyone gets swept up in this tremendous drive to give back.”

LHSON Building Campaign Help support the new nursing school building.

Current Scholarship Fund Provides scholarship support for current LHSON students and is a perfect outlet for those who want their gift, combined with existing scholarships, to sustain today’s Baylor nursing students.

Named Endowed Scholarships Many donors choose to memorialize or pay tribute to a friend or loved one through the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund.

Endowments may be initiated with a gift of $10,000 and funded over a period of five years.

Funds are named when the balance reaches $50,000.

LHSON Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund Donations (of any amount) are combined with others to form an endowed scholarship that will benefit future LHSON students in perpetuity.

LHSON Excellence Fund Distributed at the dean’s discretion,this fund is used to provide training opportunities for faculty, supplies for students, campus building repairs or expansion and much more.

Missionary Family Nurse Practitioner Program This fund enables students to participate in medical mission efforts around the world by providing medical supplies, medicines, portions of airfare and more.

Good Samaritan Dean’s Fund This fund is used to cover unexpected situations that arise throughout the year, such as a student’s difficult circumstance that renders him or her unable to buy textbooks, or the need to replace daily-used lab equipment.

Lecture Series Endowment Fund This fund is designed to enhance students’ education by bringing distinguished leaders and keynote speakers to campus on a regular basis.

An annual lecture series is created with a gift of $250,000.

Endowed Professorship Fund This fund creates prestigious faculty positions and enables the school to attract and retain high-quality scholars. Increasing the number of professors reduces the student-to-faculty ratio and further improves the overall student experience. A fund is established with a gift of $1.5M. Planned Giving Options for planned or estate giving include a bequest in one’s will, naming Baylor as a beneficiary in an insurance policy or retirement plan, or through a life income plan such as a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or retained life estate. A planned gift does not have to amount to the entire estate; it can simply be a percentage or portion thereof.

Corporate Matching Programs More than 7,500 companies nationwide offer matching gift programs to their employees and some even double or triple the gifts made by their employees.

Passing of the Mantle Ceremony

LHSON and the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT), also known as Texas Baptists, hosted a Passing of the Mantle building ceremony on August 26, 2015 at the BGCT building located at 333 North Washington Avenue in Dallas. Attended by more than 100 people, this very special ceremony was symbolically adapted from 2 Kings 2:9.

The BGCT passed on the legacy and spiritual impact it has made in the community while housed in the 100,000 square-foot, four-story, east Dallas office building with prayers for its successor, LHSON. The event included recognition of three past BGCT executive directors and the network of retired staff as well as a BGCT staff testimony. Dean Conroy shared brief remarks on LHSON’s gratitude to the BGCT and vision for the future along with a testimony from a nursing school student. The event concluded with a song and prayer followed by a reception.

Missions

Domestic Outreach & Global Nursing The U.S. Agency for International Development awarded Dr. Shelby Garner of LHSON and Baylor University $652,800 to partner with Bangalore Baptist Hospital to build a Simulation Education and Research Centre for Nursing Excellence and safe living accommodations for up to 48 nurses in Bengaluru, India. U.S. Best practices in simulation and nursing education will be incorporated into the program to build nurse capacity with a goal to increase health outcomes in India.

In the fall, LHSON students and faculty met to learn more about all the exciting Baylor Missions opportunities.

Each week LHSON’s Mission Impact Groups go out into the Dallas community to make a positive difference. Student volunteers help out on Tuesdays at Cornerstone and on Wednesdays at BonTon Farms and at West End Grace Church.

LHSON faculty member Renee Jones traveled to Vietnam to visit Nam Dinh University teaching Evidence Based Practice to 30 students for their 1st master’s level course.

Dean Conroy traveled to Hyderabad, India to attend the 2nd annual Indo-Global Healthcare Summit & Expo 2015. She was the keynote speaker and spoke on Global Nursing Research, Education and Practice Partnerships. Dean Conroy gave multiple presentations at the Marigold Hotel by GreenPark and she and Dr. Marie Hastings-Tolsma from LHSON visited NICE Children’s Hospital in Hyderabad.

Dr. Lori Spies led a 2015 mission trip to Ethiopia with 5 graduate students from LHSON. The team worked along side Ethiopian and missionary health care providers in a rural clinic to provide health care.

LHSON hosted a 2015 mission trip to Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Baylor students and faculty enjoyed seeing colleagues again at Nethersole School of Nursing. The group also learned about TCM in a modern clinic affiliated with Hong Kong Baptist Hospital. They toured the campus of Chinese University of Hong Kong and enjoyed lectures, labs and clinic visits at Kwong Wah Hospital.

LHSON faculty and students traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam and Nam Dinh, Vietnam in 2015 and visited the Traditional Medicine Hospital and Nam Dinh University.

Dr. Shelby Garner traveled to Bangalore Baptist Hospital in Bangalore, India and worked on a research study, “Perceived Strategies to Increase Retention Rates Among Nurses in India.� She also did guest lectures on research for students and faculty at The Rebekah Ann Naylor School of Nursing. Dean Conroy and Dr. Marie Hastings-Tolsma joined her.

2015 Alumni Reunion Honors LHSON Anniversaries 30th, 40th and 50th

On Saturday, March 28, 2015, alumni gathered in celebration of their shared nursing education from the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

The day began with an Alumni Open House and brunch hosted by the Etta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. Current students also gave tours of the nursing school building.

Alums enjoyed touring Baylor University Medical Center and the Sammons Center led by Dr. Linda Plank, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at LHSON. The group reminisced about the times spent at BUMC as a student of the nursing school and enjoyed the opportunity to see the recent advancements and additions like the Sammons Cancer Center and T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital.

A continuing education class was also held at LHSON. Attendees learned about “Innovation in Nursing Through Sustained Research and Scholarship” presented by Dr. Tanya Sudia, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, Interim Graduate Program Director and Professor at LHSON.

This reunion provided fellowship with fellow Baylor alums and gave abiding support to Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

At lunch, more than one hundred alumni, family and friends gathered at the Baptist General Convention of Texas to honor the 50th, 40th and 30th LHSON anniversaries. Dr. Barbara Montgomery Dossey, a 50th anniversary graduate welcomed the crowd and provided an invocation. The keynote speaker was Karol Ladd, best-selling author of over 35 books including “The Power of a Positive Woman.” Alums also enjoyed hearing from a current nursing student, Meg Woodard, who shared her compelling scholarship testimony. Certificate presentations to the class of 1965 were given by Ellen Byrd. Dr. Plank awarded the Distinguished Recent Graduate Award to Emily M. Winn.

The Friend of Nursing Award was presented by Dr. Conroy to L. Wayne Tucker. She also awarded the Distinguished Alumni Awards to Dr. Barbara Dossey and Dr. Lisa Stepp. The luncheon concluded with a benediction given by Britney Haywood Cook followed by “That Good Old Baylor Line” led by the class of 1965 and students.

Ellen Byrd (BSN, 1964) was honored on May 14, 2015, at the 27th Annual Dallas Baptist University-Oak Cliff Good Samaritan Dinner. Ellen was honored for her tireless promotion of the nursing profession throughout her career which began in 1964 when she graduated from the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Laura Dunham Shook (BSN, 1985) has published a book, Forever Hope, Choosing Life Through Cancer and Recovery (Maida Vale Publishing, London, 2014), which chronicles her relationship with God through her battle with and recovery from Stage 3 colorectal cancer. The book has been called “a powerful playbook for getting through your worst days, whether you’re battling cancer or know someone who is” and is available at www. laurashook.com. After serving nearly a decade as a missionary in Mexico City, Laura returned to Houston, Texas, where she founded Community of Faith (www.communityoffaith.com) with her husband Mark Shook and three children. In twelve years the church has grown to over 8,000 people in worship and has been listed among the top 100 churches in the country.

Laura is a gifted speaker and teacher; and leads the international ministries of the church.

LHSON Student Elected to National Student Nurses’ Association Board LHSON is proud that the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) elected Johanna M. Bridges, Director of the southern area, to serve on the 2015-2016 Board of Directors.

This prestigious opportunity for Ms. Bridges, finishing her junior year at LHSON, is the first time the nursing school has had a student serve in a national role for NSNA. She also serves as president for the Baylor Student Nurses Association at LHSON. In addition, at a ceremony in Waco, the Baylor Student Nurses’ Association (BSNA) was honored as the Outstanding New Student Organization for Baylor University.

The Outstanding New Organization Award seeks to recognize one organization each year that has demonstrated true excellence among its peers within the University community. The office of student organizations at Baylor University recognized BSNA’s significant contributions to the local, state, and national level.

BSNA’s involvement at the local level in Dallas with the Ronald McDonald House, March for Babies, Dallas Life, as well as monthly professional development meetings made the organization distinctive. LHSON is also proud of its Texas state board members: Lauren Raffaele, Secretary/ Treasurer and Abby Stainback, Editor,

Continuing the awards and recognition for LHSON, Alexis Winchester, a LHSON Junior and Class President and BSNA Service Chair, received the 2015 Excellence in Student Involvement Award from Baylor University for her unique set of leadership experiences and contributions.

“The success of BSNA rests within its outstanding student leadership as well as every member. The individual contributions to BSNA’s

Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF) The LHSON chapter of Nurses Christian Fellowship holds weekly Bible studies in the Dorm Rec Room that includes lunch, a worship team, and Bible study.

Baylor Parents Network - LHSON Chapter The LHSON chapter of the Baylor Parents Network hosts great events throughout the year such as: 1st Call to Prayer on the first Tuesday evening monthly, student cookouts, faculty/staff appreciation events and much more.

The LHSON Parents Network hosted a fun Grill Out in August to welcome the new students to LHSON.

Baylor Student Nurses Association Nursing students and faculty from LHSON’s team of the “Baylor Student Nurses Association (BSNA)” represents LHSON in the community in a variety of ways such as: volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, participating in fundraising walks for the March of Dimes and St Jude Cure Childhood Cancer; hosting bake sales for a worthy charities plus attending BSNA meetings all over the state and country.

BSNA represented Baylor at Texas Nursing Students Association in Austin.

Launching the countdown to the 5th annual Going for the Gold Gala on February 27, 2016, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing hosted Salute to Scholarships on Veterans Day at Royal Oaks Country Club. The patriotic dinner welcomed over 150 distinguished guests, honored donors and their scholarship recipients.

by Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas to support LHSON. For three consecutive years, BUMC and Baylor Scott & White Health have been sponsorship catalysts in continuing the tradition of spotlighting championship efforts to raise scholarship funds for student nurses.

The vital need for nurses in healthcare and the significant difference of a Baylor nurse was expressed in an invocation given by Douglas Lawson, FACHE, President of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and President of the Central Division of Baylor Scott & White Health – North Texas. Echoing the remarkable value of a Baylor University/Baylor Scott

Continuing the legacy of giving, scholarship endowment plaques were presented to the following donors to recognize their trailblazing generosity: Jay and Jenny Allison Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing; The Barnabus Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing given by Anita Jones; Philipp and Kimberly Rossbach Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing in memory of D.A. Weckwerth and the Donald A. Weckwerth Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing, accepted by the Rossbach’s in memory of Mr. Weckwerth. Illustrating the positive impact of receiving a scholarship

was Kendal Glendenning, a current LHSON student.

The audience was captivated by a compelling multimedia presentation, “Let Them See Jesus” written and performed by Bekah Lemonds and Bethany (Gebhart) Hook and produced by Sandbox Productions, Inc. Before closing the evening, Judge Ken Starr and Alice Starr, President and Chancellor and First Lady of Baylor University, expressed their profound gratitude to those in attendance and the difference their support makes in the future of nursing students and the growth of the nursing school. Ushering out the evening was a riveting performance

by LHSON 2015 graduate, Katy Reiswig, a former opera singer, who sang a patriotic melody and breathtaking version of “God Bless America.”

LHSON added the industry’s most advanced birthing simulator, “Victoria,” Gaumard Scientific’s newest NOELLE® simulator, to the Don A. and Ruth Buchholz Simulation Lab thanks to a donation from The Discovery Foundation. Victoria™ was featured during interactive learning sessions at LHSON and at Baylor-Waco.

Northrise University in Zambia launched a baccalaureate nursing degree program in 2015. Northrise has partnered with Baylor’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing to ensure the programs at the newly opened campus in Solwezi will have the technical support and latest training methods.

Congratulations to LHSON for 100% participation in “Our Baylor Faculty, Staff and Retirees Campaign.”

Ms. Louise Herrington Ornelas received the Founder’s Medal at the meritorious awards ceremony at Baylor during Homecoming weekend. This was the highest honor bestowed at the ceremony.
