Message From The Dean

Continuing the Momentum of Growth Committed to Nursing Excellence Shelley F. Conroy, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE Inaugural Dean, Baylor University College of Health and Human Sciences Dean and Professor, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing What an inspiring time in the history of LHSON with so many exciting things happening to promote our future growth and development. As we strive onward I am reminded of the scripture in Psalm 100:5 “For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.”

This verse leads me to express my gratitude for the sustaining support LHSON received from our generous donors, volunteers, students and Baylor family at our Pre-Gala VIP Reception this past November 3 at the Belo Mansion, which was then followed by our 4th Annual Going for the Gold Gala on February 28, 2015 at the Hilton Anatole. We were humbled by the support of over 900 Gala attendees, breaking all previous records by raising more than $1.5 million for scholarships as well as gifts for the new building.

Punctuating the importance of the need for the special quality of care provided by Baylor nurses through their participation in the event included Heisman Trophy winners Robert Griffin III and Tim Brown, as well as former Baylor Bear NFL stars Mike Singletary and Neal Jeffrey. National Sports Anchor for Fox Sports Radio Deb Carson, also a Baylor alumna, moderated the evening’s festivities.

Benchmarking a new chapter for LHSON, the Gala also revealed a special announcement that our long-time champion Mrs. Louise Herrington Ornelas stepped forward again to give the School of Nursing a generous lead gift. This gift and other capital campaign donations will allow Baylor to purchase the four-story Baptist General Convention of Texas building located at 333 N. Washington Avenue, adjacent to the current Nursing School building and Baylor University Medical Center. This gift from Mrs. Ornelas (affectionately known to us as Ms. Lou) ensures that the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, already widely known for the excellence of its graduates, will be able to further expand its influence in nursing education and strengthen its preparation of future generations of nursing professionals.

In addition to this wonderful fundraising news, we also recently received funding from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Nursing Innovation Grant Program: Transition to Practice.

The new grant totaling $462,135 will fund Geriatric Competency Validation for New Nurse Graduates: Utilization of DEU’s and Collaborative Clinical Partnerships for Development and Validation. We will partner with Baylor Scott & White Health North and Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation for this project that will develop a model program to be replicated by other nursing schools throughout Texas.

Continuing the momentum of growth extends globally through LHSON’s collaboration with The Nethersole School of Nursing of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In November LHSON hosted six exchange students for three weeks and in December welcomed three distinguished visiting faculty members to discuss doctoral nursing programs. Outreach through study and missions abroad is an important pillar of our mission at LHSON. Emphasizing servant leadership to influence global healthcare outcomes through evidence-based practice, LHSON launched a new online Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Innovation degree program. In an effort to reinforce our competitive edge, the online MSN program robustly prepares nurses who serve in management roles to advance the “triple aim” of healthcare delivery.

On a personal note, this fall I am honored to serve as Vice-President and President-Elect for the Texas Association of Deans and Directors of Professional Nursing Programs. Ensuring that professional nursing education in Texas is proactive in addressing contemporary issues and trends in practice, TADDPNP serves as the combined voice of the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education (TOBGNE) and the Texas Organization for Association Degree Nursing (TOADN).

Through our commitment to nursing excellence, we believe that everyone at some point in his or her life needs a competent and caring nurse. At Baylor, we emphasize the nurse’s calling to Learn.

Grant Awarded to LHSON By Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

L

HSON is proud to report that in January 2015 it received grant approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Nursing Innovation Grant Program: Transition to Practice with funding totaling $462,135. The new grant will fund Geriatric Competency Validation Toolbox for New Nurse Graduates: Utilization of DEU’s and Collaborative Clinical Partnerships for Development and Validation.

“The grant evaluating committee recognized the importance of the scope of work laid out by Baylor University. Based on the committee’s feedback on the grant proposal, we have high expectations that the grant results will help transform acute health care delivery for the state’s aging population,” said David Gardner, Deputy Commissioner for Academic Planning and Policy for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

LHSON will partner with Baylor Scott & White Health North and Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation to prepare an evaluation model for the achievement of geriatric competencies by undergraduate pre-licensure nursing students. Specifically, a tool to measure geriatric

The nursing students participating in this project will be both those engaged in learning within the newly developed Dedicated Units and those learning on other units within the same institutions. In total, approximately 350 students and 160 faculty and hospital partner staff will participate in either the pilot testing or validation phases of this comprehensive project. The final product will be a geriatric competency tool kit available for use by other nursing schools throughout the state of Texas.

The opportunity to then share these tools, techniques, and measurement capabilities with all the nursing schools in Texas is exciting. With the rapid growth in our older populations in the United States, it is critical that our graduates be prepared to deliver the highest quality care to promote best outcomes for our services,” said Dr. Shelley F. We are committed to collaboratively working with them to systematically prepare nursing students for the comprehensive care needs of the growing geriatric population,” said Tanya Sudia, PhD, RN, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship Interim Graduate Program Director and Professor, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

“With the aging of the Baby Boomers, the need for nurses with refined knowledge and skills in the care of the older population across the healthcare continuum is accelerating at an incredible pace. Online MSN Program In High Demand Last summer LHSON announced its new online Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Innovation degree program. Distinguished by Baylor’s legendary commitment to excellence, LHSON is proud that this new program also emphasizes servant leadership and global aspects of healthcare and health administration.

Achieving a competitive edge, the program robustly trains nurses at the advanced level to forge ahead with pivotal skills such as: the ability to transform organizational behavior, implement evidence-based nursing practice, evaluate and improve the quality of patient outcomes, implement financial strategies, manage resources with stewardship and develop innovative models to improve healthcare.

The Baylor Online MSN also offers the benefit from courses developed in collaboration with practice partner Baylor Health Care System. Significant scholarships may be available to students who qualify for our Affiliate Partner Scholarship Program through their employer such as employees of the Baylor Health Care System. Students can complete the entire curriculum in 14-16 months totaling 36 credit hours with the tuition price of $51,732.

Our Team Of Talent

Staff News Cameron (Cam) Armstrong, PhD-C joined The Baylor University Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences (RCHHS) as Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Curriculum and Student Affairs. In her new position at RCHHS, Cam will support the mission by directing the student life and progression of the RCHHS. This position will foster the holistic development of RCHHS students relating to curriculum, recruitment, summer programs, retention, academic support, mentoring, education, scholarships/philanthropy, advising, and spiritual growth. Previous to RCHHS, she joined LHSON in September 2011 as Director of Student Services and her replacement will report to her at RCHHS.

Patricia H. Zuercher, joined LHSON in November 2014 as the contract Coordinator for the 2015 Going for the Gold Gala. She has been the primary contact person for the Gala Task Force Committee and served as the Gala Coordinator for this annual fundraising event hosted on February 28, 2015 at the Hilton Anatole.

Baylor University Fall Staff Forum in Waco, September 25, 2014 Faculty News Mary Ann Faucher, CNM, MPH, PhD, FACNM, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator, NM-DNP at LHSON, was appointed to the new ACOG (American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) task force on Collaborative Practice. She will be the CNM representative on the task force and the representative for the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

Shelby L. Garner, PhD, RN, CNE, Assistant Professor at LHSON was named Chair of the Health Science Division for the Council on Undergraduate Research, a national organization.

Faculty News continued...

Rebecca Meraz, RN, MSN, CCRC joined LHSON in fall 2014 as Assistant Clinical Professor. She teaches Health Assessment Lab, Professional Nursing Practice Lab, and medical-surgical clinical. Ms. Meraz also assists with the Designated Education Unit (DEU) project.

Kelly Rossler, PhD, RN, CHSE joined LHSON in fall 2014 as Assistant Professor. Dr.

Rossler entered into academia in 2006 as a Faculty Instructor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Rossler has over 23 years of experience working and teaching in the critical care hospital setting. She joins LHSON teaching simulation and holds the designation as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. Research interests include high-fidelity human patient simulation, interprofessional education, and transition into practice.

Marie Hastings-Tolsma, Ph.D., C.N.M, F.A.C.N.M, joined LHSON in fall 2014 as a new Professor. She is a nurse-midwifery scientist who teaches in the graduate nursing program and is engaged in full-scope nurse-midwifery clinical practice. A United States Fulbright Faculty Scholar, Dr. Hastings-Tolsma spent 2012-13 in South Africa, teaching and conducting research with colleagues at the University of Johannesburg where she continues collaboration as a Visiting Professor.

Baylor University 2015 Service Awards LHSON congratulates staff and faculty who celebrated a milestone anniversary in February 2015 for their loyal years of service working for Baylor University. They were honored at a luncheon in Waco at Baylor on February 25.

Student nurses were also challenged between classes based on participation and the number of students that gave any amount between the classes: J1, J2, S1, S2, FastBacc and Graduate School students. The winning student class with the most participation was FastBacc which will receive a celebration pizza party from LHSON administration.

North Texas Giving Day September 17, 2015 www.northtexasgivingday.org On Thursday, September 18, 2014, LHSON was proud to be one of more than 1,580 organizations that participated in the sixth annual North Texas Giving Day between 6 a.m. to midnight. Each gift of $25 or more went further thanks to matching funds from the Communities Foundation of Texas for donors who gave online through www.

NorthTexasGivingDay.org. More than 219 alumni and friends from all over the United States gave to LHSON during this one 18-hour giving day with total gifts received at LHSON of over $74,000.

LHSON showed its spirit on North Texas Giving Day by setting up a booth at Communities Foundation of Texas in Dallas along with other organizations. LHSON student nurses wore their green scrubs with LHSON patches and educated the crowd with information 8

New LHSON Simulator Joins SIM Lab

Thanks to a generous donation by The Discovery Foundation, in November 2014, Gaumard Scientific Company reported that LHSON added the industry’s most advanced birthing simulator, Victoria™, to the Don A. and Ruth Buccholz Simulation Lab. Victoria™ joins an extensive line-up of highfidelity simulators at Baylor Nursing School that includes other members of Gaumard’s family such as NOELLE® and HAL® products.

LHSON had its second annual Pre Gala VIP reception on Monday, November 3, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Belo Mansion in Dallas. This event continued the tradition of spotlighting championship efforts to help raise scholarship funds for student nurses.

The evening was generously hosted by Baylor Scott & White Health to support the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Welcoming over 160 distinguished guests was Dr. John B. McWhorter, III, Senior VP, Baylor Health Care System and President, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, in addition to Joel T. Allison, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, Baylor Health Care System and Baylor Scott and White Health. Extending thanks on behalf of LHSON and sharing the convocation was Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, Dean and Professor, LHSON and Inaugural Dean of the new Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences, Baylor University.

Giving a short keynote address were Bill and Tammy Simon who were the events honored guests and are Baylor parents.

Bill was U.S. CEO of Walmart from 2010-2014 and Tammy is a former Clinical Nurse Specialist in Obstetrics and Cancer survivor. The VIP reception included closing remarks by Judge Ken Starr, 14th President and Chancellor, Baylor University and Alice Starr, Baylor’s First Lady. In addition, a special video about the importance of nursing and nursing student scholarships was shown that included a message from the keynote speaker of the 2015 Gala, Robert Griffin III (RG3).

We have designed funds that specifically benefit our students and faculty so that you can make an impact in an area important to you.

LHSON Building Campaign Help support the new nursing school building.

Current Scholarship Fund Provides scholarship support for current LHSON students and is a perfect outlet for those who want their gift, combined with existing scholarships, to sustain today’s Baylor nursing students.

Named Endowed Scholarships Many donors choose to memorialize or pay tribute to a friend or loved one through the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund. Endowments may be initiated with a gift of $10,000 and funded over a period of five years.

Funds are named when the balance reaches $50,000.

LHSON Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund Donation (of any amount) are combined with others to form an endowed scholarship that will benefit future LHSON students in perpetuity.

LHSON Excellence Fund Distributed at the dean’s discretion, this fund is used to provide training opportunities for faculty, supplies for students, campus building repairs or expansion and much more.

Missionary Family Nurse Practitioner Program This fund enables students to participate in medical mission efforts around the world by providing medical supplies, medicines, portions of airfare and more.

Good Samaritan Dean’s Fund This fund is used to cover unexpected situations that arise throughout the year, such as a student’s difficult circumstance that renders him or her unable to buy textbooks, or the need to replace daily-used lab equipment.

Lecture Series Endowment Fund This fund is designed to enhance students’ education by bringing distinguished leaders and keynote speakers to campus on a regular basis. An annual lecture series is created with a gift of $250,000.

Endowed Professorship Fund Endowed professorship funds create prestigious faculty positions and enable the school to attract and retain high-quality scholars. Increasing the number of professors reduces the student-to-faculty ratio and further improves the overall student experience. A fund is established with a gift of $1.5M. Planned Giving Options for planned or estate giving include a bequest in one’s will, naming Baylor as a beneficiary in an insurance policy or retirement plan, or through a life income plan such as a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or retained life estate. A planned gift does not have to amount to the entire estate; it can simply be a percentage or portion thereof.

Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Raises More Than $1.5 Million at Gala The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) rolled out the “green and gold” at its fourth annual Going for the Gold Gala on Saturday February 28, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole. The spectacular event welcomed approximately 900 guests and raised over $1.5 million to support scholarships for nursing school students. This surpasses the fundraising goal of $1,000,000 for this year’s gala. Last year, the 2014 gala raised over $750,000. In addition to the incredible evening, a special announcement was shared that a lead gift was made to the new nursing school building campaign.

Heisman Trophy winners RGIII and Tim Brown as well as former NFL stars Mike Singletary and Neal Jeffrey attended the event, moderated by National Sports Anchor for Fox Sports Radio, Deb Carson, (Baylor alum, BA ’88).

Each spoke of the importance of quality nursing care.

As the program began, the welcome and introductions were given by gala event co-chairs, Donna Dee Floyd and Angela Bowman (Baylor LHSON alum, BSN ’87) They acknowledged the 90 member volunteer Gala Task Force, the 44 member LHSON Dean’s Board, and the 80 LHSON Student Ambassadors.

An invocation was given by Jay and Jenny Allison, 2014 Baylor University Parents of the Year, followed by words of appreciation by Dr. Conroy. Impacting the importance of the evening, a compelling student testimony was shared by

Adding to over 100 unique silent auction items, the gala held a live auction during the program of five outstanding items. Serving as auctioneer, Ken Stohner, attorney, Jackson Walker LLP (and Baylor alum, BBA and JD) encouraged guests to bid on these items to help support LHSON scholarships. As a bonus live auction item, a special football signed by Robert Griffin III with the inscription, “Dream Big...Live Bigger.

Sic’Em” went to the winning bidder, Megan Martin as her piece of Baylor history in the only fitting way – by catching a pass from RG3 in front of a ballroom of guests!

Continuing the program, Neal Jeffrey, Baylor University All-American Quarterback, Associate Pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church and motivational speaker shared about the obstacles he had to overcome to play football at Baylor and in the NFL. Tim Brown, former Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame and recent inductee to the NFL Hall of Fame, attended the gala in support of his son, who graduated from the Baylor Nursing School in December and is now a nurse with Children’s Medical Center.

Jeffrey introduced special guest Mike Singletary, NFL Coach and Pro Football Hall of Fame member. Singletary played football for Baylor in the 1970s and was later drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1981. Arguably the best middle linebacker in the history of the game, he led the Bears to a Super Bowl XX title. His revered career has included: Linebackers Coach for the Baltimore Ravens and for the San Francisco 49ers and Head Coach for the 49ers through the 2010 season. Advisor to the NFL Vice President of Operations in New York City. Singletary told RGIII that he will have his ups and downs in the NFL and occasionally get hurt. However he said the important thing is to “Finish! Finish! Finish! Finish Strong!”

Welcoming back to the stage, Singletary officially introduced keynote speaker, Robert Griffin III who exemplifies what it means to “Go for the Gold.” As Baylor’s All-American quarterback, RG3 earned the Big 12 Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year honors, and led the team to the Alamo Bowl in 2011, after becoming Baylor’s first Heisman Trophy winner. He graduated from Baylor with a Political Science degree in December, 2010 and pursued his Masters in Communications at Baylor but was drafted by the Washington Redskins before he completed the degree.

Suffering injuries in both college and the NFL, no one knows better the importance of compassionate nursing care. RGIII and his wife Rebecca Liddicoat Griffin, a Baylor graduate, also recently announced that they are expecting their first child so soon there may be an RG4 running around their household.

In his keynote address, RGIII shared that like Singletary and many of Baylor’s nursing students, he would not have been able to attend college without a full scholarship. He is thankful to Baylor for allowing him to play football and to obtain his degree. He talked about the helpful nursing care he has received each time he has been injured, and

he answered Singletary’s charge to finish strong by declaring, “Challenge Accepted!”

Reminding the audience of the important of scholarships for nursing students, closing thanks were expressed by Ms. Janis Kovar, Director of Development, Baylor University.

Anticipating a special announcement, she invited to the stage Judge Ken Starr, 14th President and Chancellor of Baylor University and Alice Starr, Baylor’s First Lady. The Starr’s acknowledged Richard and Karen Willis plus other Baylor University Regents and Executive Council members present at the gala and thanked the crowd for their support of LHSON and all the guests and volunteers that made the evening possible. Special thanks was also given to AT&T for the largest Gala corporate sponsorship, Northern Trust for their support of the Gala VIP Reception and Baylor Scott & White Health for their unwavering support in hosting the Pre-Gala Reception in November 2014.

Before concluding the evening and leading in song, “That Good Old Baylor Line”, the Starrs said, “we are moving forward with plans for a new home for our nursing students and we are grateful for those who have already stepped forward to support this important capital campaign. Louise Herrington Ornelas, has stepped forward again to give the School of Nursing a generous lead gift. This gift and other capital campaign donations will allow Baylor to purchase the four-story Baptist General Convention of Texas building located at 333 N. Washington Avenue, adjacent to the current Nursing School campus and Baylor Hospital.”

With this official start of a capital campaign, the Baylor School of Nursing will raise funds to renovate the building which will become its new home. Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, Dean and Professor of LHSON and Inaugural Dean of Baylor’s new Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences, stated that, “Everyone at some point in their life needs a competent and caring nurse. Louise Herrington Ornelas The Going for the Gold Gala joyfully celebrates the naming of Mrs. Louise Herrington Ornelas of Tyler, Texas, as this year’s Grand Golden Star Benefactor. For her transformational and longstanding commitment to the school that bears her name, Baylor University is grateful and gives heartfelt thanks for Mrs. Ornelas’ continued support of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Mrs. Ornelas grew up in East Texas and dreamt of becoming a nurse. Due to family obligations, her dreams were not realized, but she kept a passion for supporting others in this special field.

After a career in the cable television industry, Mrs. Ornelas retired and remains active in her community with her husband, Joseph. She is a member of Baylor’s Endowed Scholarship Society and was named an Alumna Honoris Causa in 1992. In 1999, Mrs. Ornelas received an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Baylor University, and Baylor’s nursing school was renamed the Louise Herrington School of Nursing in honor of her endless contributions to Baylor and the nursing profession in general.

The Louise Herrington School of Nursing’s faculty, staff, students and the Baylor University family give their enduring and heartfelt thanks for Ms. Lou’s enduring commitment to our future nurses and helping them realize God’s calling in their lives.

Linda and Harold Gilbert The Going for the Gold Gala is honored to welcome for a third year Linda and Harold Gilbert as Golden Star Benefactors. The Gilberts donated the gala sponsorship gift in honor of Harold Gilbert and Jim Oliver who previously established an endowed scholarship in honor of their wives, Linda Lou Shafer Gilbert, and Sandra Sue Shafer Oliver who are nurses.

The Linda Shafer Gilbert and Sandra Shafer Oliver Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing was established in 2006 by their husbands, Harold and Jim, to honor their wives and their nursing legacy. Their endowment has funded many scholarships in nursing at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

This year, Linda and Sandra wanted to honor their husbands who have supported, encouraged and made possible their more than fifty year careers in the nursing profession. For the third year, the Gilbert and Oliver families have chosen to support the Going for the Gold Gala. The two families believe this is an opportunity to honor members of their families who have set gracious examples going before them.

The Ginger Murchison Foundation The Going for the Gold Gala is grateful to the Ginger Murchison Foundation of Dallas, Texas, for their support of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing as a Golden Star Benefactor. In 2015, the Foundation established the Ginger Murchison Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing to support students who are enrolled at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing while also giving significant support for the school’s planned new building.

Virginia “Ginger” L. Murchison of Athens, Texas, was as well known for her philanthropy and generosity. As the mayor of Athens once described, she had “a heart the size of Texas.” Ginger was committed to her community, and her name can be found adorning buildings and attached to programs throughout East Texas. The legacy she leaves is one of giving both her time and her resources in community service.

Don H. Wills is the President of the Ginger Murchison Foundation and serves his community on several nonprofit boards three of which are Baylor Scott & White Health-related. He is still active in the banking and investment world, serves on the board of Liberty Capital Bank and continues his work in oil and gas. Don and his wife, Sue, have four children, all of whom are Baylor University graduates.

Tom A. and Suzanne Martin The Going for the Gold Gala is proud to have Tom and Suzanne Martin as Golden Grand Gala Hosts. For the second consecutive year, the Martins have chosen to support the Gala as sponsors. The Martins generously established the Peyton Colleen Martin Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing in 2015 in honor of their daughter, Peyton Colleen Martin. This is the second scholarship established by the Martins, of the Woodlands, Texas. Tom and Suzanne established last year’s fund in honor of their oldest daughter, Megan Elizabeth Martin., who graduated with a BSN in May 2014.

Tom and Suzanne Martin learned of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing through their daughter, Megan, who was drawn to the School as a way to answer God’s calling in her life. The Martins’ younger daughter, Peyton, answered the same calling at Baylor as a freshman this year.

Laurie and Mark Nielsen The Going for the Gold Gala is proud to have Laurie and Mark Nielsen as Golden Grand Gala Hosts. The Nielsens chose to support the Louise Herrington School of Nursing’s students by establishing the Laurie Kim Johnson Nielsen and Mark A. Nielsen Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing in 2014 in conjunction with this year’s gala. This generous gift is one of many given joyfully to see students succeed including their decision to place the school of nursing in their estate.

The Nielsens have given this scholarship in memory of Laurie’s parents, Rev. Isaac and Sue Butler Johnson, who sacrificed greatly so that Laurie (BSN ’78) could attend Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing. It is the hope of Laurie and Mark that this scholarship will honor the Johnsons’ legacy by giving future students the opportunity to enjoy the unique experiences, perspectives and blessings which Baylor provides future health professionals.

Mr. Weckwerth, who passed away in 2012, greatly admired the students of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing’s FastBacc program, and the Rossbachs chose to celebrate his legacy by supporting these future nurses.

Philipp and Kimberly Rossbach met and fell in love while students at Baylor University when Philipp became Kimberly’s German tutor. Philipp first came to the United States as a foreign exchange student, when he met Don Weckwerth who served as a father figure and mentor. Philipp returned to the U.S.A. to go to Baylor University with the help of a scholarship funded by Don.

Donald A. Weckwerth The Going for the Gold Gala gratefully acknowledges Donald A. Weckwerth, who generously provided support for the Louise Herrington School of Nursing through his estate and has therefore been named a Golden Grand Gala Host. Mr. Weckwerth, who passed away in 2012, was a World War II veteran, a successful banking executive and an Alumnus by Choice of Baylor University.

Don chose to invest in the Louise Herrington School of Nursing by establishing, through his estate, the Donald A. Weckwerth Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing after hearing the testimony of nursing students and how scholarships opened the door for them at Baylor University. Mr. Weckwerth had a special admiration for students of the FastBacc program, who showed courage in changing their career paths to enter the nursing program. His scholarship will help future FastBacc nurses realize God’s calling in their lives through this special program.

Baylor Nursing School Hosts Prestigious White Coat Ceremonies

romoting compassionate care, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) hosted its second White Coat Ceremony on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Baptist General Convention of Texas in the Presley Room. The prestigious ceremony included 53 first semester junior nursing students putting on their white coats symbolically for the first time and reciting LHSON’s “Nursing Pledge.” With family and friends in attendance to share in the special ceremony, the students also received a specially designed red and gold pin that LHSON faculty attached to each of the students white coats. The pins were provided

by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) and serve as a visible reminder of their pledge and commitment to the nursing profession to provide high quality, compassionate care. Sharing the keynote address was Claudia Wilder, DNP, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, Baylor University Medical Center of Dallas.

Baylor’s LHSON was selected last summer by APGF and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to participate and host White Coat ceremonies. LHSON hosted its inaugural White Coat Ceremony on Monday, September 8, 2014 with 98 undergraduate students. More Than $784 Raised to Fill Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes

From May 2014 through November 2014, LHSON staff and faculty collected items needed by 10 to 14 year old boys and girls to fill 100 Operation Christmas Child boxes. In addition to financial gifts to purchase some of the items needed, some of the many donations gathered for this worthy cause included: wash clothes and soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, brushes, combs, beanie babies, sunglasses, flashlights, jump ropes, balls, yo yo’s, pens and pencils, Chapstick, notepads, and Mission Highlights

Volunteers from the LHSON staff and faculty met at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center on December 4, 2014 and filled 112 shoeboxes with contents averaging $7 each, compared to 62 boxes LHSON filled in 2013. The boxes where shipped to children in Niger and Togo, Africa through the Operation Christmas Child program of Samaritan’s Purse International Relief.

LHSON Expands Global Collaboration to Hong Kong

ontinuing the momentum of global work, LHSON welcomed three distinguished faculty members from

The Nethersole School of Nursing of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in December 2014 to discuss doctoral nursing programs. They also met with LHSON faculty who conduct research in the cardiovascular, gerontology, and long term care areas, plus visited chronic illness care clinics operated by nurse practitioners, meeting with clinical researchers in these clinics.

“The continued outreach through study and missions abroad is an important pillar of our mission at LHSON,” said Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, Dean and Professor, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing and Inaugural Dean, Baylor University Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences. “The global need for highly qualified nurses is growing and it is inspiring to see the opportunity to immerse our students in other cultures to develop their awareness of global health nursing in other cultures and share the gift of Baylor with exchange students and fellow nursing colleagues.”

The exchange students enriched their education with the opportunity to attend LHSON lecture classes and the simulation lab, as well as spend time with faculty and graduate students. They visited healthcare facilities and community organizations in Dallas such as: Baylor University Medical Center, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Our Children’s House – Baylor Health Care System, Dallas Life Foundation, and Cornerstone Baptist

“We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to share strategies for expanding our research profile and to discuss potential collaborative endeavors,” said Dr. Tanya Sudia, Ph.D., RN, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Baylor’s global collaboration with Hong Kong was sparked in 2012 when the senior leadership of Baylor University traveled to Hong Kong for an exploratory trip.

In 2013 LHSON offered a faculty led May study-abroad trip to Hong Kong, China along with five students who completed Complementary Therapies and Traditional Chinese Medicine during their visit. The course was hosted

by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, with visits to The Nethersole School of Nursing, the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Hong Kong Baptist Hospital. In November 2014, LHSON hosted six exchange students from The Chinese University in Hong Kong for three weeks.

“We have had an outpouring of support by the LHSON faculty, the Dean’s Board, the clinical community and Baylor Healthcare System,” said Lori A. Spies PhD, RN, NP-C, Coordinator Family Nurse Practitioner Program, Missions 22

Church. Other highlights included: exploring the Dallas Arts District and Klyde Warren Park, traveling to Waco to tour Baylor University and attend a football game, relaxing at the private home of Baylor alums at Possum Kingdom Lake; enjoying dinner at Edgemere in Dallas with Baylor donors; and serving as the distinguished guests at a luncheon hosted by Sigma Theta Tau International on Global Health.

Additionally, the LHSON Global Health Care & Missions class hosted a special event for fellow students, faculty and prospective graduate nursing students with a guest lecture

by Gabe Hernandez, a missionary to Sierra Leone. The event included a presentation by the exchange students about nursing in China.

Partner News Baylor Student Nurses Association (BSNA) Dean’s Board The LHSON Dean’s Board provided a faculty/staff appreciation breakfast in early 2015.

Baylor University Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary

The Baylor University Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary hosted a lunch for LHSON J1 students in the fall and also assembled Valentine’s Day cookie bags for students.

Nursing students and faculty from LHSON’s “Baylor Student Nurses Association (BSNA)” get involved in so many ways.

Since Fall 2014 they have volunteered with the Ronald McDonald house for its Halloween party and pumpkin decorating contest, Family Bingo Night and Valentine’s card decorating; helped with a 5K Fundraiser for Graham Kormylo, plus attended a BSNA meeting in Portland and attended the Texas Nursing Students’ Association annual conference where 19 LHSON students attended.

Nurses Christian Fellowship Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas Special thanks to the Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas for hosting a beautiful brunch in the Anita and Dale Jones Foyer to honor the December 2014 graduating class of LHSON.

The LHSON chapter of Nurses Christian Fellowship holds weekly Bible studies in the Dorm Rec Room that includes lunch, a worship team, and Bible study.

Baylor Parent’s League – LHSON chapter The LHSON chapter of the Baylor Parents Network hosts lots of great events throughout the school year such as: 1st Call to Prayer on the first Tuesday evening of the month, student breakfast before finals, cookout for students, valentine student goodie bags, faculty appreciation grab n’ go and more.

National Nurse Midwifery Week Celebrated at LHSON In celebration of Nurse-Midwifery Week, October 6 -12, 2014, along with the American College of NurseMidwives (ACNM), and Our Moment of Truth Campaign (OMOT), the upper class of student midwives at LHSON and the midwifery faculty hosted public presentations to educate the community about midwifery.

“Midwife means ‘with woman.’ Through our activities this week, we will educate, inform, and empower women in the Dallas area,” said Mary Ann Faucher, CNM, MPH, PhD, FACNM, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator, NM-DNP, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. “National Midwifery Week is an excellent time to recognize the contributions midwives make toward women’s health within our community.”

As reported by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the high rate of cesarean sections, skyrocketing health care costs, and misperceptions about midwives and women’s health are among the reasons ACNM and its more than 7,000 midwife members observe National Midwifery Week each year. The week also highlights 80 years of midwifery care in the United States.

Midwifery Week is a chance for midwives and the women they serve to reflect on their experiences and midwifery’s contributions to women’s health care, including attending births and providing well-woman care. This annual event

brings women, families, and midwives together to empower women to make informed choices about their health care.

Nurse-Midwifery week created an opportunity to spread the word about midwifery and educate women of all ages about vital information that affects their health and well-being.

Talks by the student midwives covered a variety of topics presented to a diverse age group of young girls to adult women. The midwifery faculty presented summaries of articles recently published in a “Lancet” 2-part special issue highlighting the vital contributions midwives from around the world can make to save the lives of women and infants.

“Here at LHSON, our nurse midwifery (NM) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program provides the education to practice as a competent nurse midwife and help meet the unmet healthcare needs, particularly within the state of Texas,” said Dr. Faucher. “We are committed to the education of nurse-midwives in a unique Christian environment who are prepared to practice in concert with standards of nurse-midwifery practice as established by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Our students will also learn to manage the care of women and families using the nurse-midwifery process that includes a use of theory that is scientific in nature and current in content with an application that is family-centered in approach and reflective of the art and skill of nurse-midwifery.”

LHSON 4th Annual Going for the Gold Gala - RG3 Keynote Speaker [1/27/2015] Located in the heart of Dallas, the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing is set to host its fourth annual Going for the Gold Gala on Saturday, February 28, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole with a fundraising goal to raise $1,000,000.

Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Hosts 2nd White Coat Ceremony [1/26/2015] Promoting compassionate care Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) hosted its 2nd White Coat Ceremony on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Baptist General Convention of Texas in the Presley Room. The prestigious ceremony included 53 first semester junior nursing school students putting on their white coats symbolically for the first time and reciting a “Nursing Pledge” adapted from the original Florence Nightengale pledge and Gonzaga University School of Nursing. They also received a specially designed red and gold pin that LHSON faculty attached to each of the students white coats. The pins were provided by APGF and serve as a visible reminder of their pledge and commitment to the nursing profession to provide high quality care. Sharing the keynote address was Claudia Wilder, DNP, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, Baylor University Medical Center of Dallas.

Baylor Nursing School Expands Sim Lab’s Line Up of Scientific Products [11/5/2014] Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing has added the industry’s most advanced birthing simulator, VictoriaTM, to the Don A. and Ruth Buccholz Simulation Lab. The simulator has a lifelike delivery and birthing mechanism that births a life-like baby with sophisticated monitoring capabilities.
