Faith Building Milestones Strengthening the Future of Nursing Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE

Inaugural Dean, Baylor University College of Health and Human Sciences; Dean and Professor, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing

Throughout the late spring and early summer, milestone moments have been notably abundant at LHSON and at Baylor in Waco. We are truly appreciative of all the support and prayers. I am reminded of the scripture in Isaiah 43:19, “For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” (NLT) As many of you know, the Baylor University Board of Regents voted in May to establish the new College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) by uniting four existing health-related academic units and creating a forward-looking organizational structure to advance the University’s commitment to healthrelated education and research. The anchor units that will collaborate to form the College of HHS include, Communication Sciences and Disorders; Family and Consumer Sciences; Health, Human Performance and Recreation; and the Louise Herrington School of Nursing. All share a common purpose of improving the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities. The College of HHS will draw upon Baylor’s Christian mission and tradition in health care to prepare scholars and leaders who can translate theory into practice and advance knowledge of health, human behavior, and quality of life.

Forging ahead, I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve a two year appointment as the inaugural dean for CHHS while also continuing my leadership as dean at LHSON. The CHHS implementation team has been hard at work meeting, planning and building the foundation for the new college.

Temporary offices are set-up in Sid Richardson 230 and we have been transitioning into this new suite to have it ready by the opening of the fall semester.

As shared by Baylor’s Interim Provost, David E. Garland, “bringing these academic units together in closer conversation and partnership will provide

greater coordination and oversight of most health/human sciences-related programming, education, innovation, and research at the University. Curricula will be strengthened and opportunities for research, creative endeavors, and clinical experiences at Baylor should increase with a more coordinated effort as programs work together with external partners.”

Also adding to the excitement, I enjoyed along with Laura Curtis, 2013 DNP Graduate, the news of being accepted for a podium presentation for Laura’s DNP capstone project: Implementing the Promotion of Ambulation and Upright Positioning During the First Stage of Labor. It was presented at the July 2014 Sigma Theta Tau 25th International Research Congress in Hong Kong. What an inspiration to be part of the achievements of a pacesetter LHSON student like Laura. Her hard work and global recognition proudly resonates our LHSON motto, Learn. Lead. Serve.™ Continuing the momentum, this publication includes news of blossoming growth at LHSON. You will read about our successful 3rd Annual Going for the Gold Gala which raised over $750,000 in scholarship support, the launch of our new Masters in Science - Nursing Leadership and Innovation online program, and the announcement from the Baptist General Convention of Texas about our future move into their Dallas facility. Additionally, we feature faculty accolades, new staff introductions, and benchmarks from our students, alums, donors, and community partners.

Baylor University Online MSN Program Launched

T

his summer, the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing announced its much anticipated new online Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Innovation degree program. Students can complete the entire curriculum in 14-16 months totaling 36 credit hours with a tuition price of $51,732.

“Everyone at some point in their life needs a competent and caring nurse. Our students are drawn to a calling to learn, lead and serve, and we prepare them for professional practice, leadership and service to society within a distinctively Christian community,” said Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, Dean and Professor, Baylor University, Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Delivering a pacesetter program, this revered educational opportunity prepares graduates for the management and leadership needs across the healthcare continuum including outpatient agencies, home healthcare and hospice as well as acute care services.

Courses follow the rigorous Quality Matters guidelines and graduates will meet the competencies established by AACN, ANA, AONE and QSEN and will be ready to take the national exam and obtain the Nurse Executive-BC or Nurse Executive Advanced-BC national certification.

Distinguished by Baylor’s legendary commitment to excellence, LHSON is proud that this new program also emphasizes servant leadership and global aspects of healthcare and health administration.

Achieving a competitive edge, the program robustly trains nurses at the advanced level to forge ahead with pivotal skills such as: the ability to transform organizational behavior,

implement evidence-based nursing practice, evaluate and improve the quality of patient outcomes, implement financial strategies, manage resources with stewardship and develop innovative models to improve healthcare.

Fostering optimal results, the learning environment reflects the individualized attention for which our program is known within the community, the state of Texas and across the nation. The courses equip students with the knowledge required to succeed in the complex role of today’s nurse, manager, and leader; skills in human resource management, financial planning and management, strategic planning and management of patient outcomes.

The Baylor Online MSN also offers the benefit from courses developed in collaboration with practice partner Baylor Health Care System. Staff News

Tanya Sudia-Robinson, R.N., Ph.D. -

is the new Associate Dean for Research & Scholarship. She has more than 30 years of experience in higher education, administration, and nursing, and health care research.

Her new responsibilities provide the nursing school with research and teaching. In addition, some of her many contributions will include: developing and implementing policies and processes that promote and enhance research; mentoring and assisting faculty as they develop research programs; providing support and resources for faculty and student researchers including proposal development; grant administration and regulatory oversight, and much more.

Kristen Singletary -

joined LHSON on June 16 as the new Assistant to the Dean. Her position provides administrative support for the Dean and incorporates leadership, service, teamwork and maintaining an effective organization.

Stephanie Weishaupt -

joined LHSON on May 27 as the new Coordinator of the Pre-Nursing Office in Waco, Texas for LHSON. She will coordinate the function of the pre-nursing office of LHSON while advising current students on the Waco campus, talking to prospective students and parents, maintaining academic records, and compiling admission data for students for admission consideration to the upper level.

Elaine S. Lark, MLA -

joined LHSON in early spring as the Coordinator of Recruitment and Enrollment and works in Student Services. Her role includes visiting colleges, hospitals, attending conferences and implementing recruiting events for the purpose of cultivating relationships with potential students. She oversees the evaluation and processing of admissions for both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Ms. Lark is also the point of contact for prospective students.

Whitney Taylor Cortner joined LHSON on March 31 as the Director of Marketing and Communications. Her new position supports the mission of the LHSON by working as a member of the senior administrative team and being responsible for the development of marketing and communications programs that support the strategic goals of the LHSON and Baylor University.

TJ Neathery -

a senior at Baylor University, worked at LHSON this summer as an Intern helping with Marketing and Communications. He is getting his Bachelor of Arts at Baylor and is a University Scholar concentrating on writing and film. From June to early August, TJ produced marketing videos and worked on other communications projects.

Faculty News

Nan (Batten) Ketcham, M.S.N, CNE, Senior Lecturer & FastBacc Coordinator, was appointed in June as the Undergraduate Program Director at LHSON. In her new position she will work closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Dean regarding matters pertaining to the undergraduate curriculum, clinical experiences, and course faculty. In addition to ongoing program management, she will work on programmatic evaluation and reporting accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Texas Board of Nursing (TX BON), and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). LHSON also congratulates Nan as a new CNE. Dr. Dora Bradley, VP of Nursing Professional Development for the Baylor Health Care System & Associate Dean of Academic Partnerships at LHSON, was accepted for induction as a 2014 Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.

Lori Spies, Family Nurse Practitioner Program Coordinator and LynCoordinator, Prater, Ph.D., Seniorthe Lecturer and UndergraduMissions received 2014 Excellence in Nursing Award ate Clinical Coordinator, was elected to the for the Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care category. Dr. Board Shelleyof Conroy was a finalist in theMedical Leadership category, as well as Dr. Jane Nunnelee for Samaritan Outreach Ministries. the Geriatrics category.

Lynda (Lyn) M. Pesta, M.S., was honored for her retirement at the luncheon for National Nurses Week at LHSON. She spent 15 years in various hospital settings and 14 years in BHCS hospitals: 12 at BUMC, two at Baylor Garland and the last seven years at LHSON. She will be a part time faculty member in the fall.

Lyn Prater, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer and Undergraduate Clinical Coordinator, was elected to the Board of Samaritan Medical Outreach Ministries.

Vivian Gamblian, RN, MSN, Senior Lecturer & Coordinator of Simulation is congratulated by LHSON for selection into the National League for Nursing’s Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators.

Diana Kohler, was honored on Friday, May 16 at a Dessert Reception at Baylor in Waco to celebrate her retirement.

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 Florence Nightingale’s birthday. In the spirit of this special week in recognition of nurses, LHSON hosted a luncheon for the faculty.

New Dean’s Board Fund in Missions

At the June 2014 Dean’s Board Meeting, the Board voted to establish a new Deans Board Fund in Missions. The goal of Baylor and LHSON is to be more missions oriented; this fund will help make that possible. There are currently three endowed Missions funds. The new Louise Herrington School of Nursing Dean’s Board Fund in Missions will pay for medical supplies, transportation, and items needed for mission trips.

Current Scholarship Fund Provides scholarship support for current LHSON students and is a perfect outlet for those who want their gift, combined with existing scholarships, to sustain today’s Baylor nursing students.

Named Endowed Scholarships Many donors choose to memorialize or pay tribute to a friend or loved one through the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund. Endowments may be initiated with a gift of $10,000 and funded over a period of five years. Funds are named when the balance reaches $50,000.

LHSON Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund Donation (of any amount) are combined with others to form an endowed scholarship that will benefit future LHSON students in perpetuity.

LHSON Excellence Fund Distributed at the dean’s discretion, this fund is used to provide training opportunities for faculty, supplies for students, campus building repairs or expansion and much more.

Missionary Family Nurse Practitioner Program This fund enables students to participate in medical mission efforts around the world by providing medical supplies, medicines, portions of airfare and more.

Good Samaritan Dean’s Fund This fund is used to cover unexpected situations that arise throughout the year, such as a student’s difficult circumstance that renders him or her unable to buy textbooks, or the need to replace daily-used lab equipment.

Lecture Series Endowment Fund This fund is designed to enhance students’ education by bringing distinguished leaders and keynote speakers to campus on a regular basis. An annual lecture series is created with a gift of $250,000.

Endowed Professorship Fund Endowed professorship funds create prestigious faculty positions and enable the school to attract and retain high-quality scholars.

Increasing the number of professors reduces the student-tofaculty ratio and further improves the overall student experience.

A fund is established with a gift of $1.5M. Planned Giving Options for planned or estate giving include a bequest in one’s will, naming Baylor as a beneficiary in an insurance policy or retirement plan, or through a life income plan such as a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or retained life estate. A planned gift does not have to amount to the entire estate; it can simply be a percentage or portion thereof.

3rd Annual Going for the Gold Gala Hits Goal of $750,000 On Saturday, May 3, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) hosted its third annual Going for the Gold Gala at the Omni Dallas Hotel in downtown Dallas. The gala achieved its fundraising goal of $750,000 to support endowed scholarships for nursing students. The event included 91 silent auction items raising $52,000 of the impressive goal.

The evening’s festivities began at 6:00 p.m. with more than 620 guests in attendance. Bianca Castro, DFW NBC Channel 5 anchor (Baylor alum, BA’03) served as the emcee for the gala. Honorary Gala Chairs included: Judge Ken Starr, 14th President and Chancellor of Baylor University and Alice Starr, Baylor’s First Lady; Louise Herrington Ornelas, LHSON Lead Endowment Donor; Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, CNE, Dean and Professor of Baylor University LHSON and Richard Conroy; and Mary McCall, former first Lady of Baylor University. Special thanks was also given to Gala Event Co-Chairs, Donna Dee Floyd and Angela Bowman (Baylor LHSON alum, BSN ’87) and the entire 110 member Gala Task Force (which included 30 students) and the Dean’s Board.

“Superheroes” arrived when the gala began. Cody Reynolds, dressed as superhero “Coffee Man” and Jordan Loetscher dressed as “Bow & Arrow Girl” shared a video of their senior class project for the LHSON graduating class of fall 2013. Reynolds explained that every class gives a senior gift that varies from paintings to park benches or fundraisers for scholarships. His class decided to make capes for children in the hospital. The inspiration was that children are fighting their own super villains – or disease – and that makes each of them a superhero every day. Throughout the semester, LHSON students donated their time to make a cape from scratch, many who had

never used a sewing machine before but made them with love and that made them perfect. Once finished, “Coffee Man” and “Bow & Arrow Girl” delivered 55 hand-made capes to Children’s Medical Center.

An invocation was given by Reverend Walter Guillaume, Jr., Executive Pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas (Baylor alum, BA’69) followed by words of inspiration by Dr. Conroy. “Our students are drawn to a calling to learn, lead and serve, and we want to be able to help them attend our nursing school, knowing that for many of them, paying for their education is beyond their families’ abilities.”

Impacting the importance of the evening, a compelling student testimony was shared by Hope Nail-Bergin, a junior at LHSON and past scholarship recipient of the Michael Key Malone Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Nursing. Ms. Bergin said, “If it was not for this event and the caring of so many people, I would literally not be standing here. Your support of the nursing school has affected my life and ultimately the lives of many.” She shared her story of not being the traditional Baylor nursing student. She is married, a mother of three children and had a previous career in finance as a stockbroker. After undergoing treatments for Cancer when pregnant with her third child, her prognosis was grim. However, thanks to one amazing Baylor nurse, she was able

to get through that difficult time and is happy to report that the baby who was not expected to live is now a beautiful 9 year old little girl. Bergin said the experience inspired her to become a nurse. She said, “You all are part of this powerful connection of humanity, humility, and faith that is my definition of what it is to be a Baylor nurse.”

Reminding the audience of the important of scholarships for nursing students, Ms. Janis Kovar, Director of Development, LHSON, shared an endowed scholarship plaque presentation to Mike and Alison Malone and their family. She said, “So many of you that are here tonight helped to create this scholarship.” The Michael Key Malone Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Nursing was established from undesignated funds that were given in 2013 at the Going for the Gold Gala. “With your and the Malone family’s help, I am so proud to say that the endowed scholarship is now at the plaque level of $100,000. A plaque will be hung in the Hall of Honor at the nursing school and this one will be presented tonight to Mike and Alison from one of their scholarship recipients, Ashley Phillips,” said Kovar.

Festivities continued with a live auction of three outstanding items donated to benefit LHSON scholarships. Serving as the auctioneer, Ken Stohner, attorney, Jackson Walker LLP (and Baylor alum, BBA and JD) motivated the audience. With high-energy auctioneering talent, Stohner and his three assistants managing competing bids from the audience, helped raise $8,100 for a Grand Cayman Island Vacation House; $8,500 for two incredible American Airlines tickets; and $3,100 for a Baylor football suite package at the new McLane Stadium with Judge Ken and Alice Starr.

Sharing the evening’s special music was Holly Tucker from The Voice 2013, Season 4, NBC top 6 runner-up on Team Blake (and a current student at Baylor University).

She sang, “One Moment in Time” and a magnificent Benediction of “How Great Thou Art”. Tucker also sang “That Good Old Baylor Line” along with Dr. Randy Lofgren, Associate Vice President for Constituent Engagement, Baylor University.

Highlighting the gala was keynote speaker, Mary Lou Retton, America’s gold medal legend. The first American woman to receive an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, Retton also was the first American to win the Olympic All Around title. Retton shared a dynamic message about her distinguished journey in gymnastics, her family and most recent association with Baylor as the mother of a Baylor Bear.

Closing remarks were made by Judge Ken Starr and Alice Starr. They thanked the audience for their support of the LHSON and all the special guests that made the evening so special. Thanks was also expressed to Baylor Scott & White Health for their support with hosting the Pre-Gala Reception in November 2013. Also, thanks was given to The Omni Dallas for temporarily adjusting its multicolor outdoor building lighting to Baylor green and gold in support of the Gala.

Linda and Harold Gilbert The Going for the Gold Gala was honored to welcome Linda and Harold Gilbert as Golden Grand Gala Hosts. The Gilberts donated the gala sponsorship gift in honor of Glenda Gilbert Hickman M.D., their daughter who passed away on May 14, 2012, after many years of devoted medical care to her patients in pediatrics, internal medicine and Palliative Care.

The Linda Shafer Gilbert and Sandra Shafer Oliver Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing was established in 2006 by their husbands, Harold Gilbert and Jim Oliver, to honor their wives and their nursing legacy. Their endowment has funded many scholarships in nursing at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

This year both Linda Gilbert and Sandra Oliver celebrated their fifty year anniversaries as active practicing nurses and have provided many contributions to the lives of their patients.

Currently, Linda is employed at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Sandra is employed at Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In addition to their personal legacies to the nursing field, both of Linda’s daughters and one of Sandra’s daughters have degrees in the medical profession. Gay Lynne (Kara McIntyre) received her BS in Nursing from Baylor in 1981. Connie Oliver (Connie Chason) received her degree in Nursing from Baylor in 1987.

Dr. Glenda Gail Gilbert (Glenda Hickman) received her degree in Computer Science from Baylor in 1985, and her Master’s Degree in Computer Science, and then went on to receive her Medical Doctor’s degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas in 1997.

Tom A. and Suzanne Martin

The Going for the Gold Gala was proud to have Tom and Suzanne Martin as Golden Grand Gala Hosts. Through their generosity, The Megan Elizabeth Martin Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing was established in 2014 by the Martins of the Woodlands, Texas in honor of their daughter, Megan Elizabeth Martin.

Tom and Suzanne Martin learned of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing through their daughter, Megan, who was drawn to the school as a way to answer God’s calling in her life. Megan knew that she wanted to study nursing since the ninth grade, and attending Baylor only confirmed her passion for the field. Throughout her four years at Baylor, Megan met many friends and faculty who have inspired her. Even before her graduation, which she celebrated in May 2014, Megan has had the opportunity to serve as God’s hands and feet through a Baylor mission trip to Peru, where she was able to work as a team with other students to care for patients and show God’s love. She was also able to use her skills in nursing to bless and encourage patients during her clinical rotation, as part of her nursing courses.

The Martins’ youngest daughter, Peyton, will follow in Megan’s footsteps as she graduated this spring from The Woodlands College Park High School with plans to attend college and pursue a degree in Nursing. To prepare for this calling, Peyton has shadowed doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s hospital, leading her to the desire to work in Labor and Delivery once she has achieved her degree.

As committed Baylor parents, Tom and Suzanne have served to help further the mission of the LHSON. While they are not alumni, Tom graduated from the University of Oklahoma and Suzanne attended Sam Houston State University, the Martin’s have embraced the LHSON and its mission.

Suzanne has been actively involved with the LHSON Baylor Parent’s Network and through her work as a member of the Going for the Gold Gala Task Force. They are both thankful for Baylor and the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, as Suzanne has been able to see a difference in Baylor students and the impact the faculty and school have on their lives. There is a true passion that fills the school and it is their hope that this endowed scholarship fund will provide assistance to deserving students who are enrolled in the Baylor University LHSON.

During April 2-5 LHSON had six undergraduate students attend and present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2014 in Lexington, Kentucky. These students submitted abstracts that were reviewed by nursing faculty and some of the few chosen among more than 4,000 applicants around the nation. The NCUR acceptance letter to the students stated their abstracts significantly contributed to the discipline of nursing. Four students presented posters and two students did an oral presentation.

Washington Avenue. Currently occupied by the Baptist General Convention of Texas, on May 20, 2014, the Executive Board of the BGCT voted to approve to the sale of the building to the Baylor nursing school.

The Baptist Building will greatly enhance the ministry of Baylor’s outstanding nursing program, which is at capacity on its current campus, while strengthening our growing partnership with the Baylor Health Care System.

Prior to the trailblazing news, the Baylor University Board of Regents approved the purchase of the facility at a quarterly meeting on May 16.

Domestic Outreach & Global Nursing Vietnam Nursing Delegation Visits LHSON In early April we welcomed a visiting Vietnam Nursing Delegation.

LHSON signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing and Nam Dinh Nursing University in Vietnam to establish a relationship of cooperation in international health education.

LHSON Summer/Fall 2014 Service Project Operation Christmas Child - Staff Sponsored

The LHSON Service Project for Summer/ Fall 2014 is Operation Christmas Child. Each month, we are collecting items needed by our target age group of 10-14 year old boys and girls. Our goal is to fill 100 Operation Christmas Child boxes in November.

The collection of items runs from May through November 2014. Collection boxes are located on the first floor in the LHSON foyer and on the 3rd floor. National Nurses Week Celebrated with Distinction

S

ince 1991, National Nurses Week is celebrated annually. Festivities run from May 6, also known as National Recognition Day for Nurses, through May 12th, noted as Florence Nightingale’s birthday, the founder of modern nursing.

According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), “National Nurses Week is a time of year to reflect on the important contributions that nurses make to provide safe, high-quality health care. Nurses are known to be patient advocates, acting fearlessly to protect the lives of those under their care.

They represent the largest single component of the health care profession, with an estimated population of 3,100,000 registered nurses in the United States.”

Nursing for many is simply a vocation, a profession requiring special commitment and preparation. However, Christian nurses are called to care for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of their patients. In the spirit of National Nurses Week, the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) thanked its faculty and staff with a luncheon on Monday, May 5. Special recognition at the luncheon was also given to retiring faculty member Lynda (Lyn) M. Pesta, M.S., Lecturer, LHSON. 20

Also celebrating National Nurses Week, the LHSON Baylor Parents Network held its monthly, 1st Call to Prayer, on Tuesday evening May 6. This is a monthly opportunity for Baylor parents, spouses and friends of LHSON students, to come together to pray for students, faculty and administration.

Volunteer chapter liaisons, Kari and Stephen Haywood, received a Certificate of Recognition from Judy Maggard, Director, Baylor Parents Network, for their faithful and outstanding service to LHSON’s chapter of the Baylor Parents Network.

The ANA reports, “nurses are leading in the delivery of quality care in a transformed health care system that improves patient outcomes and safety. When nurse staffing levels increase, the risk of patient complications and length of hospital stays decrease, resulting in cost savings. Plus, nurses are experienced researchers, and their work encompasses a wide scope of scientific inquiry including clinical research, health systems and outcomes research, and nursing education research.”

2014 Alumni Reunion a Success On March 22nd, alumni from the classes of 1940 to the newest class of 2013 gathered in celebration of their shared nursing education from the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. The day began with the Etta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International hosting a brunch. Members gave presentations of their recent projects over good food and lively fellowship. A Continuing Education class was taught by Vivian Gamblian on Global Missions and Cheryl Riley on the subject of post-partum cord blood.

Following the class, alums toured Baylor University Medical Center and the Sammons Center. The group reminisced about the times spent at BUMC as a student of the nursing school and enjoyed the opportunity to see the recent advancements and additions such as the Sammons Cancer Center and T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital. At lunch, over 100 alumni, family, and friends gathered at the Baptist Building to honor the class of 1964 who received their 50th anniversary certificates. Dr. Linda Plank and Dr. Barbara Camume gave an informative presentation about Advanced Practice Nurse updates. Going for the Gold Gala tickets were among some of the many door prizes handed out. Dr. Shelley Conroy also presented the 2014 Alumni Awards to many distinguished winners. This reunion provided unequaled fellowship with fellow Baylor alums and gave abiding support to Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Dean’s Board The LHSON Dean’s Board met in June for a special summer meeting. We are so appreciative for their leadership and support.

Baylor University Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary This group of ladies generously and lovingly prepared and delivered over 70 Valentine’s Day cookie bags in February to LHSON J1 students.

Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas Special thanks to the Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas for hosting a beautiful brunch on May 13 in the Anita and Dale Jones Foyer to honor the spring 2014 graduating class of LHSON.

Baylor Parents Network – LHSON chapter The LHSON chapter of the Baylor Parents Network meets on the first Tuesday evening of the month for 1st Call to Prayer. This is a great time to pray and encourage each other as members of the Baylor family. A Certificate of Appreciation was also presented in May by Judy Maggard, Director, Baylor Parents Network, to Kari and Stephen Haywood for their faithful and outstanding service to the LHSON Baylor Parents Network.

Baylor Student Nurses Association Giving back to the community, 10 nursing students and faculty from LHSON’s team, “Baylor Student Nurses Association (BSNA)”, volunteered to walk and donate to the annual March of Dimes “March for Babies”. The event was held at White Rock Lake in Dallas on Saturday, April 12. The team raised $530!

Baylor School of Nursing Blood Drive Each year LHSON hosts multiple blood drives with the help of the American Red Cross. So far this year LHSON hosted blood drives in March and in July and invited the community to take part in the event. LHSON Students Minister at The Well

Yeah, the Baylor nursing students are here!” exclaims a member of The Well Community as nursing students enter Dallas’ Cliff Temple Baptist Church.

Members and staff from The Well welcome the LHSON students with smiles and handshakes as the aspiring nurses are introduced to a unique and innovative mental health treatment program.

Started by Baylor alumni Joel Pulis and Josh Pulis in 2002, The Well Community is a faith-based community outreach program focused on serving those with mental illness. Offering worship services, lunch, educational classes, 12-step groups, prayer meetings, Bible studies, social outings, vocational guidance, and residential programming, The Well is the only known ministry of its kind in the United States.

Through this programming, The Well aims to foster a community where those struggling with mental illness can feel acceptance and a sense of belonging.

During the second semester of their junior years, Baylor nursing students spend seven weeks in a clinical course focused on mental health nursing.

Since a majority of students’ clinical experiences occurs in inpatient psychiatric facilities, The Well allows students to observe and interact with people on an outpatient basis and thus better understand the continuum of care of mental health treatment. While at The Well, students participate in corporate worship, teach a psycho-educational class, check vital signs, serve lunch, join in program activities, and spend time getting to know The Well members.

The students’ main clinical course objective is to focus on spiritual needs of those struggling with mental illness, and The Well provides an excellent opportunity for students to understand the interrelationship between physical, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects of people’s lives. Student Lydia Toavs states, “Many of the members told me how much meaning, purpose, and hope The Well has given them. It’s not just a place where they can get a free lunch; it’s a place where their souls can receive desperately needed nourishment.”

Speaking to the relationship between Baylor LHSON and The Well, Josh Pulis, Program Director of The Well states, “The partnership between the Baylor School of Nursing and the Well Community has been a tremendous success. For several years, this relationship has resulted in a positive impact in the lives of The Well members and the students. The Well is grateful for partners like The Louise Herrington School of the Baylor Nursing continues to provide School of opportunities for students to Nursing!” develop holistic nursing skills, which will in turn prepare them to serve the needs of society as servants of Christ.

LHSON – In the News White Coat Ceremony – Fall 2014

LHSON is pleased to announce that it was selected by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to participate in a White Coat Ceremony. LHSON is honored to be among only 100 schools of nursing chosen nationwide to receive funding support to pilot White Coat Ceremonies. Launching this ground-breaking initiative focused on promoting compassionate care, LHSON hosted its first White Coat Ceremony on September 8, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. On this special day, 102 LHSON students gathered in Beasley Auditorium at Baylor University Medical Center, with guest speaker Jane Hall, National Director, Nurses Christian Fellowship.

Diadeloso (The Day of the Bear) is celebrated at Baylor University in Waco as an annual spring holiday for students. It began in 1932 when it was originally called All University Day, then it became Physical Fitness Day and was later termed May Day. In 1966 it officially became, Diadeloso and the tradition continues.
