2 2018-2019 LHSON DEAN’S BOARD
The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) is blessed with vibrant growth. During summer 2018 we moved into a contemporary new Academic Building providing a distinguished atmosphere of advanced learning conducive for developing the best and brightest next generation of Baylor nurses. The 100,000 square foot retro-fitted, four-story building is the result of a successful $28 million fundraising project for new space to house the majority of the LHSON’s academic functions. Our previous campus, just a block away, now focuses on clinical practice and simulation laboratories. Continuing our forward momentum, U.S. News and World Report’s 2020 Best Graduate Nursing Schools ranked our DNP program #41. Our online MSN Leadership and Innovation program ranked #42 of the 2019 Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs. Also, we welcomed our new online DNP in Executive Nurse Leadership. This program joins our other Doctor of Nursing Practice online programs including: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwifery and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. The need for caring and compassionate nurses has never been greater. In fall 2018 nursing enrollment reported 404 undergraduate BSN traditional track students, 73 FastBacc® students, 423 pre-nursing students, 43 graduate advanced practice students and 30 MSN online students. Total combined enrollment in fall 2018 was 973. Plus, LHSON students are revered for scoring significantly higher than the national average on standardized nursing licensure and certification exams, and many graduates have served with distinction around the world in all areas of the medical field, mission field, and branches of the United States Armed Forces. Building on our legacy, we take great pride in our strong tradition of integrating faith and academic excellence in nursing education. The LHSON is inspired by Baylor’s five year academic strategic plan, Illuminate and the nursing school serves as one of the pivotal anchors in its interdisciplinary areas of focus: Health, Data Sciences, Materials Science, Human Flourishing, Leadership & Ethics and Baylor in Latin America. Through impactful research and scholarship LHSON is giving light to new possibilities in nursing and other significant areas. Ultimately, Baylor aspires to become America’s preeminent Christian research university. Emphasizing servant leadership to influence global healthcare outcomes, we continue our ministry of Baylor’s nursing program through study and mission abroad outreach. Through the 2018-2019 academic year we offered missions trips to Zambia, Africa; Lima, Peru; Bengaluru and Hyderabad, India and study abroad trips in England and Vietnam. We remain active in teaching and research in Hong Kong, India, Uganda and Zambia. We are also fortunate to have an incredible faculty and staff that not only educate but nurture our aspiring Baylor nurses to fulfill their calling to Learn.Lead.Serve.® We truly believe that each new nurse makes the world a better place.

HISTORY
Baylor University is a private Christian university and a nationally ranked research institution whose mission is to educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community. Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas through the efforts of Baptist pioneers, Baylor is the oldest continually operating university in Texas. The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) located in Dallas was established in 1909 as a diploma program within Baylor Hospital in Dallas, which is now Baylor Scott & White Health’s Baylor University Medical Center. In 1950 it became one of the six degree-granting schools of Baylor University. The first Baccalaureate degrees were granted in 1952 establishing the school among the earliest baccalaureate nursing programs in Texas. In 1999, the School was renamed the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing after Louise Herrington Ornelas, a 1992 Baylor Alumna Honoris Causa, who made an endowment gift to the school. Accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education,* LHSON offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees through a Traditional program and FastBacc® (one year accelerated) program. RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP Faculty engagement in research and scholarship continues along an upward trajectory with ongoing funding from local, state, and national agencies and private foundations. Opportunities abound for undergraduate and graduate students to work collaboratively with faculty on projects conducted in the U.S. and abroad. LHSON has many diverse projects exemplifying our scholarly commitment at the nursing school to Learn.Lead.Serve.®
Research News Academic-Practice Partnerships to Reduce the Shortage of Operating Room Nurses Nurse Educator featured a video online with Dr. Linda Plank, LHSON and Karen Hammett, Baylor Scott & White Health about Academic-Practice Partnerships to Reduce the Shortage of Operating Room Nurses. As Nurse Educator stated about the video, “The operating room is a unique practice environment for nurses; however, many nursing programs no longer include OR nursing in the curriculum. This is unfortunate because ORs in the U.S. are experiencing shortages of nurses.” The video provided an opportunity to learn how LHSON offers learning experiences in the OR for students through an academic-practice partnership. Baylor Researchers Awarded Grant to Develop Diabetes Mobile Health App for Use in India An interdisciplinary team of Baylor University researchers – from nursing and business information systems to art and video game design – and physicians from Bangalore Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, India, were awarded a 21st Century Knowledge Initiative Grant from the U.S. India Education Foundation (USIEF). The grant will provide the opportunity to develop a diabetes mobile health app to boost awareness and educate those in India who are most at risk for diabetes. Healthcare Simulation Week - LHSON Virtual Reality Simulation Research Dr. Kelly Rossler is paving the way for simulation research at LHSON. She studies the effectiveness of simulation-based teaching strategies on improving interprofessional education and collaborative practice among nurses and healthcare professionals. Dr. Rossler completed testing for the effectiveness of a low-cost virtual reality system that allows nurses to realistically work with patients and equipment in a virtual environment. Currently, she is conducting a study to compare simulation teaching modalities to transition newly licensed nurses into practice. Dr. Rossler is also working with Ganesh Sankaranarayanan, PhD, Assistant Director for the Center of Evidence Based Simulation at Baylor Scott & White Health to develop studies on an immersive virtual reality-based experiential learning simulator to improve medication administration, on the use of virtual simulation technology for prevention and early diagnosis of skin cancer, and on the effectiveness of virtual reality simulation on fire safety skills among students. During National Simulation Week in late September 2018, Bianca Castro, anchor and health reporter with KXAS-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth reported on Dr. Rossler’s research and our simulation lab. The story was aired on more than 100 NBC affiliates throughout the country. LHSON Awarded Excellence in Educational Research by STTI LHSON is proud to share that on July 18, 2018, Dr. Shelby Garner and Dr. Erin Killingsworth were called to the stage at the 29th International Research Congress of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. They received the 2018 Excellence in Educational Research Award, awarded by the Sigma Theta Tau International, Melbourne, Australia. The award was given for an abstract and presentation entitled: “The Effectiveness of Simulation Education on Improving Self-Efficacy Towards Teaching Among Nurse Educators in India.” The entire team of authors included: Shelby Garner, PhD, RN, CNE;

Erin Killingsworth, PhD, RN, CNE; Leena Raj, PhD (c), RN and Martha Bradshaw, PhD. An open access article disseminating the full study was also published in International Nursing Review, the official journal for the International Council of Nurses. Also in attendance from LHSON were Drs. Tanya Sudia and Deborah Petty. Baylor Connections – Dr. Lori Spies Highlighted KWBU-FM (Waco/NPR), July 13, 2018 On the July 13, 2018 episode of Baylor Connections, host Derek Smith interviewed Lori Spies, Ph.D., R.N., assistant professor and missions coordinator at Baylor’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing. She was awarded a Fulbright Global U.S. Scholar Award to participate in global health research projects in India, Vietnam and Zambia. As she’s built and grown a missions program that has enabled Baylor Nursing students to serve around the globe, Dr. Spies shared how nursing, global health and service go hand-in-hand. Baylor Connections is a weekly radio program/podcast that introduces the people behind Baylor’s teaching, research and distinct role in higher education. Additionally, Dr. Spies was featured in BaylorProud and Nursing Notes published by Johnson&Johnson.
Current Fulbright Scholars Leena Lourdu Swamy, PhD(c), M.Sc. Leena Lourdu Swamy, Principal of the Nursing Institute at Bangalore Baptist Hospital in India, was awarded a 2018-19 Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship to serve as a Visiting Scholar at LHSON starting in August 2018 through May 2019. During her time at LHSON, she conducted research towards her PhD dissertation. Her research proposal is titled, Research on Developing and Integrating a Health Care Communication Skills Course into the Curriculum of Undergraduate Nurses for Better Patient Care. Lori A. Spies, PhD, RN, NP-C Dr. Lori A. Spies was selected for a 2017-19 Fulbright U.S. Global Scholar Award. RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP Funded Projects USAID/ASHA – Dr. Shelby Garner and Dr. Tanya Sudia The U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA) awarded Baylor University a $900,000 grant for Bangalore Baptist Hospital to construct a new Women’s and Children’s Healthcare and Research Center in Bengaluru, India. The new Women’s and Children’s Center will help cultivate positive relationships between citizens of the U.S. and India and improve health outcomes for women and children. University Research Committee – Dr. Marie Hastings-Tolsma Dr. Hastings-Tolsma received funding from the Baylor University Research Committee to partner with Baylor’s biochemistry and veterinary sciences departments to study, Effectiveness of Rubus Ideaus Consumption during Pregnancy on Gestation in Maternal Mice and their Offspring. Work from this investigation has the potential to further understanding of the biological mechanisms which promote successful onset and progression of labor in humans. US-India Educational Foundation – Dr. Shelby Garner Dr. Garner and a team of researchers and participants from Baylor University and Bangalore Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, India received funding from the U.S.-India Educational Foundation through the Indo-US 21st Century Knowledge Initiative. The two year project titled, Indo-U.S. Partnership to Transform Research Education Capacity in Simulation and Virtual Reality Simulation to Improve Community Health Education Outcomes in Karnataka, India, will increase mutual understanding between the people of both countries while equipping researchers to address non-communicable disease prevention and treatment. AABC Foundation – Dr. Mary Ann Faucher Dr. Mary Ann Faucher received a research grant from the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC) Foundation to study women’s perceptions on the use of video-calls in early labor. Women will be recruited from 3-4 different settings including birth centers to participate in focus groups led by Dr. Faucher and a collaborator from Yale University. The findings will be used to inform the development of an intervention study introducing video-calls in early labor care. Young Investigator Development Program – Dr. Lori Spies Dr. Spies was awarded a research grant through Baylor University’s Young Investigator Development Program. The study titled, Optimizing population outcomes in Uganda through bundled nurse-led hypertension interventions, will be carried out in Uganda in partnership with Clarke International University and the International Hospital Kampala. The study will determine the impact of the intervention on hypertension physiologic measures, medication adherence, and modification of lifestyle behaviors. University Research Committee – Dr. Elizabeth Perry Caldwell Through the Baylor University Research Committee, Dr. Perry Caldwell was awarded a grant titled, Health Literacy of Adolescents in Texas in 2018. The purpose of this study is to describe individual and family factors influencing health literacy levels in adolescents across Texas. Adolescents and caregivers will complete the Newest Vital Sign health literacy instrument, the Family Communication Scale, and a demographics form online using the Qualtrics online platform.

Undergrad Research & Scholarly Achievement – Dr. Shelby Garner Dr. Garner’s project titled, Building Health Champions Among Youth in India for Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Prevention, was funded in 2018 through Baylor University’s Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Achievement Small Grant Program. In collaboration with undergraduate nursing students and investigators at Bangalore Baptist Hospital and Baylor University, the study aims to develop and research an interactive health educational program on type 2 diabetes and hypertension in middle and high schools in a slum subpopulation in Bengaluru, India to build “health champions” among youth and to contribute to the prevention of NCDs in India.

Ceremuga, PhD, CRNA, LTC (ret), ANC, USA for receiving the 2018 Researcher of the Year Award presented by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Foundation. Dr. Ceremuga is a faculty member for LHSON’s United States Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing (USAGPAN). According to the AANA, the Researcher of the Year Award is named in memory of John F. Garde, a previous Foundation Trustee, AANA Executive Director and charter member of the AANA Foundation. The John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the practice of anesthesia through research. Dr. Shelley Conroy Named President of SREB, CCEN Executive Committee The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing (CCEN) named Dr. Shelley Conroy, Dean of the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing, the president of the SREB CCEN Executive Committee. ADVANCE 2018 Best Nursing Team Award Congratulations to LHSONs Simulation Team for being recognized by ADVANCE Healthcare Network as the 2018 Best Nursing Team in the “Initiatives” category. The winning entry focused on a new strategy for role assignment in simulation known as “TwoHeads-are-Better-than-One” (2HeadsR>1). The method of role assignment promotes critical thinking, clinical decision-making, teamwork and collaboration among participants.

Dr. Cheryl Tucker Received National Recognition Congratulations to Dr. Cheryl Tucker for being one of 30 faculty selected nationwide by The American Association of Colleges of Nursing to participate in the inaugural AACN-Apple Digital Innovation Bootcamp: From Content to Action, July 9-12, 2018 in Austin, Texas. Through a partnership between AACN and Apple, the Bootcamp experience provided faculty participants with the opportunity to refine their digital technology skills.

MILESTONE MOMENTS Statue Dedication The Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) hosted a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 of its new “Divine Servant”® statue donated by Dallas Baptist University. Created by Max Greiner, Jr. Designs based in Kerrville, Texas, the 1,200 pound life-size bronze sculpture symbolizes Christian servanthood, and depicts Jesus Christ washing the feet of Simon Peter. Building Dedication LHSON hosted a dedication ceremony on Thursday, August 30, 2018, for its new Academic Building at 333 North Washington in Dallas. To accommodate the growing nursing program, Baylor University purchased a 100,000 square foot, four-story office building in East Dallas. Formerly the home of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the building was retro-fitted for the Baylor School of Nursing as part of a capital campaign project. Celebrating Our Stars LHSON hosted an appreciation dinner for Gala sponsors and endowed scholarship donors themed Celebrating Our Stars, on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at The Joule Hotel in Dallas, Texas. The notable evening was sponsored by Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas to support the LHSON. For six consecutive years, BUMC and Baylor Scott & White Health have been sponsorship catalysts for the LHSON’s Going for the Gold Gala. Chapel Dedication LHSON hosted a chapel dedication ceremony on January 29, 2019. The event welcomed distinguished guests from Baylor University in Waco and Dallas Baptist University as well as members of LHSON’s Dean’s Board, Building Committee, donors, alums and other friends of Baylor. LHSON is grateful to John and Marie Chiles for their incredible generosity of the stained glass window and to Dallas Baptist University for gifting a kneeling bench. Sincere appreciation is also expressed for the sustaining support of Judge Ken Starr and Alice Starr for whom the chapel is dedicated. Going for the Gold Gala On March 2, 2019, LHSON, hosted 770 guests at its eighth annual Going for the Gold Gala. The spectacular event was held at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas – home of the Dallas Cowboys. Highlighting the gala were featured speakers, Dallas Cowboy Linebacker #50 Sean Lee and his wife Megan Lee who were interviewed by Dr. Linda A. Livingstone, President of Baylor University. Providing critical resources for the Nursing School and its students, this year’s gala raised over a half million dollars. Distinguished Nursing Lectureship LHSON hosted its Inaugural Distinguished Nursing Lectureship on September 7, 2018. The keynote speaker was Dr. Jean Watson, Founder and Director of Watson Caring Science Institute who spoke on “Preserving Caring as the Core of Nursing Practice.” Later in the year, LHSON hosted its 2nd Annual Distinguished Nursing Lectureship on April 5, 2019. The keynote speaker was Dr. Karren Kowalski, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, President/CEO of the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence. She spoke on “Building on the Past...Leading Into the Future.”

LHSON Alumni Reunion LHSON is appreciative for the alums and guests that attended the Alumni Reunion on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the new LHSON Academic Building. Together the group celebrated the legacy of being a Baylor nurse and enjoyed a luncheon and program with keynote speaker, Dr. Lori Spies, Assistant Professor & Fulbright Scholar, Missions Coordinator, LHSON. The nursing school honored the 50th, 40th and 30th anniversaries of the classes of 1969, 1979 and 1989 and congratulated the 10th year of our FastBaccÂŽ program. Additionally, LHSON acknowledged the following outstanding alums for their commitment and support of nursing: Distinguished Alumni, Dr. Jobeth Pilcher; Distinguished Recent Graduates; Anna G. Yoo and Keith Hatfield and Friend of Nursing Award, Dr. Kathy Tinius.

MISSIONS Missions
Continuing our ministry of Baylor’s nursing program, outreach through study and mission abroad is an important pillar of our missions at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). Emphasizing servant leadership to influence global healthcare outcomes, students are offered the opportunity to participate in missions. Through domestic and international missions students give back to the community with their nursing skills and spiritual heart.
Nursing Degree Program Growing in Vietnam Dean Shelley Conroy had the opportunity during summer 2018 to join some of the LHSON faculty in Nam Dinh, Vietnam where LHSON has been instrumental in the development of curriculum for the Nam Dinh National Nursing University. During her visit she was honored to provide advice and consultation regarding the potential for the development of a degree program for a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. She met with both the Deputy Minister of Health and three Vice Directors. Baylor University has a partnership with Nam Dinh National Nursing University whereby we consulted with them to start the first Master of Science Nursing degree in Vietnam four years ago. Every summer four to six faculty go to Nam Dinh National Nursing University to teach core courses in the MSN program. Their Rector requested that Dean Conroy come to Vietnam and speak to the Ministry of Health about developing advanced practice nursing in Vietnam with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree as preparation. LHSON Visits London, England LHSON offered a 3-credit hour course titled, “Nursing & Healthcare in Great Britain.” The course ran from July 6-August 6, 2018, and examined nursing within the British health care system including nursing education, nursing roles within the the healthcare system and health policy. Students had the opportunity to visit different types of public and private health care facilities, universities and clinics, learning from nurse experts in Great Britain. Team Bengaluru 2018 “Teach India” LHSON traveled to India in summer 2018 with six students and two team leaders, Dr. Lyn Prater and Dr. Shelby Garner. The destination was Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH) and the Rebekah Ann Naylor School of Nursing. The team stayed at the BBH guest accommodations and participated in devotionals and worship, led hospital Bible studies, shadowed hospital nurses and joined BBH on rural and urban community clinical site visits. The major trip focus was led by Madeleine Blunt, an honors student whose project, “Building Health Champions Among Youth in India for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention” was implemented with all Baylor students and faculty involved in a rural school identified by BBH’s, Assistant Director of Community Health, Dr. Carolin Elizabeth George. Anniversary Trip to Hyderabad, India LHSON’s 2018 summer mission team to Hyderabad, India was led by Dr. Mary Ann Faucher and Dr. Cheryl Riley. This was the 5th year for the trip for undergraduate students. This focus provided menstrual hygiene education to preteens in two government schools. Many girls miss one week of school each month due to their menstruation. In addition, LHSON trained the school monitor at each school to help sustain the program. At the Neonatal Intensive Care Emergencies (NICE) Hospital the team provided education to postpartum mothers on cycle beads to help with child spacing. Bound for Zambia, Africa in 2018 LHSON summer globe-trotters experienced a mission trip to Zambia, Africa to serve in Lusaka and Ndola, Zambia. LHSON partnered with Northrise University in Ndola, Zambia to serve the community. Dr. Lori Spies served as the team leader and Dr. Kristi Feutz and Monica Mullins were co-leaders. LHSON had 14 undergraduate students and one doctoral student join the trip and apply what they are studying at BU as they served in a medical outreach capacity. Students visited the local children’s hospital to learn more about the state of health care in the community. The team also worked alongside a dental team from Texas A&M Dental School.

Vietnam Faculty to Faculty Development LHSON visited its partner MSN program at Nam Dinh National Nursing University in Vietnam. Students were in our 4th cohort and enjoyed their courses with visiting LHSON faculty who came to teach for two week sequences including: Drs. Spies, Prater, Jones and Cotter. Dean Conroy taught nurses with Dr. Plank and Dr. Bradley at the Pediatric Hospital. LHSON also collaborated with the Rector and other key leaders about the next phase of our partnership. Medical Mission Trip to Peru Making a difference through global healthcare, during Spring Break, March 8-17, 2019 six students from the LHSON joined with 19 students from Baylor University’s Medical Service Organization and traveled to Peru on a Baylor Missions medical mission trip. The group worked with Operacion San Andres to offer a health clinic to the underserved populations in Collique, a shantytown on the outskirts of Lima, Peru.

DONORS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Daughters of Martha Sheeder
Smiling with heartfelt remembrance about her mom, Alison Sheeder said, “She was genuinely happy about everything. I think that happiness was infectious to everyone around her.” In May of 2012, Martha went back to school to complete the FastBacc® program at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). The following February she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “After she graduated from the LHSON, she went back to Texas Oncology where she had actually gotten her infusions,” recalled her daughter Lindsay Brown. “In fact, she started a tradition there now called ‘Martha’s Gong.’ Everyone that finishes their chemo treatment gets to ring the gong at the end. She had the opportunity to touch so many lives as a nurse,” recalls Meredith Sheeder. Then, in October of 2016, my sisters and I all got a phone call at about 11 p.m.,” shared Maury Sheeder. “Mom had been at dinner with her boyfriend and collapsed in the bathroom. She was rushed to the hospital. They did an MRI and quickly got the results back. The doctors put us all in a room together and explained that if there was white on the brain that it meant there was no brain activity. So, I remember we were all sitting there together and they projected the picture of her brain up on the screen and the whole brain was white. That was really hard for us. We all surrounded her around the bed, and prayed and then at 2 p.m. on October 20, 2016 we held hands and let her go be with God.” Martha’s legacy lives on because her daughters established an opportunity for other FastBacc® students who are struggling financially to be able to be a nurse. “We were able to get the scholarship endowed in record time,” said Lindsay. “To see hundreds of people come together to make this dream a reality to honor our mom was incredible.” “If you’ve gone to a hospital or doctor’s appointment and a nurse has touched your life and impacted it in a positive way, donate to the nursing school,” said Meredith. When you contribute to the education of these wonderful future nurses you are also helping every single person they touch throughout their career because one good nurse will do good 100 times over.”

Veronica Browne knew God was calling her to serve in the healthcare field. She just didn’t know where. As an undergraduate student at Baylor University, Veronica pursued a major in Biology, thinking she would go on to become a doctor. But God had other plans. After graduating from Baylor in 2014, Veronica took a position at Waco’s Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Hillcrest, where she worked with emergency room doctors as a medical records scribe. It was during that time working with both doctors and nurses at the hospital that Veronica decided God’s plan for her meant to return to school at Baylor’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing. “As soon as I stepped into the doors, I knew that this is where I was supposed to be,” Veronica said. “From every class and every lab and every clinical, I felt like I was where I needed to be. And I actually enjoy going to clinical, and I enjoyed going to class – even our eight hour classes – because I learned so much in that small period of time. I feel like God is calling me to this profession specifically.”
