An Artificial Christmas Tree?

I think that I shall never see

A thing as garish as this "tree."

Instead of needles soft and green,

It has a harsh. metallic sheen.

The branches fold, its trunk is square;

No bird has ever nested there.

No fragrance as of pine or spruce

Pervades the air throughout its use.

It never felt the gentle rain, The season's change on hill or plain, Or sensed the tender, loving care

Provided in plantations where,

Under the grower's watchful eve

The green trees thrive beneath the sky.

This thing of metal's not for me:

I want a green and fragrant tree.

Mark LASC Fall Conference at Palm Springs

Promptly at 8:00 a.m. on November 15 more than 25 members of the Board of Directors of the Lumber Association of Southern California convened at breakfast to formally open the l2th ar.rnual fall conference of the Association at the EI ]\lirador Hotel, Palm Springs.

This is the annual meeting of the board, and delegates to the conference were in' vited, but it seemed a little early for some.

Two hours later, following the directors' breakfast meeting, president of the Association Robert K. Leishman made his address of welcome, opening one of the most successful conferences held. Comments were also made by Kingston McKee, Bruce Donley and William D. Murdock before the meeting was turned over to chairman of the morning Edward R. Stoner, Jr.

For the next three days all meetinqs

moved with scheduled precision, including the Saturday golf tournament handled exclusively by Ken Dietel, despite high winds whipping the desert spa and much of Southern California.

Over 200 lumbermen and their wives registered for the conclave, and every leading lumber executive in the area took an active part in the panel discussions.

In spite of the tight schedule of business meetings, leisure time for golf and swimming was fitted in by the hard-working members.

Big entertainment event was the Board of Directors' Cocktail Party in the Starlite Patio, followed by the Bavarian Beer Festival in the Silver Palm Room. Food and grog were arranged by maitre d' Steve Stephens of the El Mirador, and everyone had a real mug-clinking time. So much

so that it was a chore for some of the dele' gates to attend their own hunt break{ast Friday morning in the cold and gray hours of eieht to nine o'clock.

H. N. o'North" Swanson was Conference chairman, ably assisted by LASC executive vice-president Paul Hollenbeck. The Conference committee included James W. Cooper, Richard Freeman, Wayne Gardner, Dennis Gilchrist, Ralph Hill, Ed Stoner, Jr., and Jim Williams.

Saturday at 7:00 a.m. Ken Dietel met the hearty lumberjacks at the Bermuda Dunes for the annual LASC golf tournament. Steve Freeman of Newport Beach as a wholesaler established a "first" by winning low gross and low net.

The meetings were informative and the social program, planned by King l{cKee, was highly successful.

Greetings from A. L. Hoover Co.

We were pleased, in the December I issue of The Calilornia Lumber Merchant, to prepare a bright and cheerful Christmas Greeting for the A. L. Hoover Co. of San Marino. In reconstructing the ad from a tear sheet of a previous issue, we picked up the address and telephone number from that ad' Only trouble is-the A. L. Hoover Co. moved during 1961 and acquired a new telephone number!

Oqklqnd Solutes "The Week"

Famous as a lumber port in pioneer days and more recently for the immense quantities of the products it uses in its recordbreaking corumercial and home construction, Oakland joined with the nation and Canada in its observance of Octoberis National Forest Products Week.

Vice Mayor Felix Chialvo acting for Mayor John C. Houlihan proclaimed the week in a beribboned message to the citizenry which cites lumber as America's oldest industry, dating back lo 1608 and_the shipment of clapboards from Jamestown, Virginia Colony. He further noted that the industry has gone unhera'lded through most of the intervening years and that Oakland and the nation owe it a great debt "for applying the material to build our homes, schools, churches, farms, towns and cities throueh three centuries of our history."

In the foreats of coastal British Columbia, the giant Red Cedar often survives centuries of time, wind and weather. Little wonder, then, that lumber cut from this naturally timeless wood will beautify and protect homes in the most severe climates for decades more.

ITS BEAUTY IS AGED.IN.THE.WOOD:

Cooperating in planning talks before service clubs and other events to point up the importance of forest products to the economy and daily living, were the Construction Industries Committee of the Oakland Chamher of Commerce, individual plants, labor unions, and the East Bay Lumber JACs (Joint Action Committee) of which L. A. .Iacobsen, chairman of the Oakland Chamber group, and Victor S. Roth were co-chairmen.

The promotion during the week spotlighted the various products embraced by the industry, including lumber, veneer, plywoo,l, hardboard, particle board, poles, split materials, wood puip and other items, and stress that these native products are woriable, functional, utilitarian, durable, economicai and decorative.

One of the special events of the week was a chartered bus tour by local members of the forest products industry to Ukiah to tour related plants in the area.

Los Angeles Council Posses Fire Retordont Meqsure

"Business is Good

toBusiness Is GoodBusiness Is Everywhere." This stated philosophy toward buiness and its implementation no doubt is the reason why Globe Internationol of California has just moved to triply-expanded guarters at 9059 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles 34.

F,stablished a decade ago, Globe International of California has each year grown at a rapid rate and today the name of Globe and its various exclusive brand names are well known throughout the world.

Specializing in imported products and emphasizing modern and creative merchandising, Globe has built its reputation as a leader in the plywood and hardboard market in America.

This fast-moving company is headed by I. M. Hoffman and Louis Massing. Closely associated with them is Mike Murphy, sales rloDag€r;

"Service is our most important asset," say the GLO-WOOD boys. ooOrders received by 2:00 p.m. are delivered bright and early

is Everywhere

next morning, and we have a huge local stock to draw from. We sell only to the wholesale and retail, and we believe that by selling through established wholesale sources we assure an orderly marketing program."

In the Globe office you'll find Sid Chattler heading up the trouble and aspirin department. IVhen you need a special product, Sid is the one to call.

Next, you'll find Betty and Larry on the phones and in charge of the Order Department.

Sid Rosenthal has done a tremendous job as sales supervisor of the Orange County area. Gordon Brault covers the San Gabriel, San Bernardino and Riverside area. and Sam Rifkin covers the Valley area "as far north as daylight holds."

Capable and pleasing Dorothy Stein is in charge of accounting and credits.

Cal Hacker, as supervisor of the warehouse, believes in the Globe idea of service, and carries out the Globe policy"The

Thus, with these policies of service and merchandising and with these people to carry them out, Globe International practices the philosophy that "there is no such thing as bad business-business is good, buiness is eaerywhere.

States Mr. Hoffman, ooThe decade of the sixties will see the biggest years this country has ever experienced, but we must learn to merchandise in the '60's rather than in the fashion of 1950. Don't underestimate your dealers and don't sell inferior merchandise. The dealers know grades and qualities and values far better than most suppliers give them credit for. Give a good value at a fair price together with the best service, and you will build many friends along the way.

"Protect your dealer and don't sell around him. This has been one reason why

,'On December 25th we celebrate the birthday of a certoin Jewish carpenter who lived, and worked, and taught, and laughed, and loved more than nineteen hundred years ago in that barren country that we now call oothe Holyland". What sort of a fellow was He, this young Hebrew who, by the time He was thirty-three years of age had done His great work, and gone home to His Father? Artists of the old school did the world a great disservice by picturing Him with both paint brush and words as a sad' looking 'oMan of Sorrows", so that many people even to this day, still think of Him in that wav.

Yet every open-minded student of biblical lore understands that He was indeed nothing of the kind. He was probably the most vivid, the most vital, the most nragnetic, the most thrilling man who ever walked the earth. How otherwise can you picture strong and busy men and women dropping everything that they had, to walk behind this young unknown Jew from the desert country of Nazareth, and following Him even to the cross? Tb get a mental picture of this magnificent young man, radiant with strength, vibrant with confidence, His face and form as appealing as His tremendous words were inspiring, would be a wonder{ul Christmas present for anyone who previously had failed to consider Him in this fashion. You don't think that the man who scoureed the money-changers from the temple in such manner that they fled

before Him like chaff before the wintry wind, was any peh, tired-looking, physical weakling, do you ? On the contrary, He was undoubtedly the most impressive and tremendous young inan they had ever seen, with eyes that flamed with indignation at the desecration of the temple of His Father; with muscles hard as steel.

Yes, sir, it would be a wonderful idea for eveiy thinking person at this Christmas season, to get a corrected idea of the founder of Christianity. Saul of Tarsus was a blood-thirsty ruffian whose business was seeking out, torturing and destroying the followers of Jesus. He had incited the stoning of the gentle Stephen, and held the robes of those who cast the stones. One day He was on his way to Damascus to ferret out and kill some more Christians. Saul of Tarsus was tough. The hardest, cruelest gangster you ever heard of was probably a gentle creature compared with Saul. And as he proceeded along the road to Damascus he met face to face a young man he had never seen before. To Saul, Jesus of Nazareth was only the name of a crucified Jew whose followers he was intent on destroying. Yet when Saul met the resurrected Jesus face to face that day on the road to Damascus, what did he do? What did he say? Vas he tough? Was he Saul, the killer of Christians? No. Saul needed but once glance at that young Man of Nazareth, and said: 'oW'hat wilt Thou have me do." That

was all. But for the remainder of his long life. Saul of Tarsus was Paul the Apostle, visiting the peoples o{ the civilized world and preaching and proclaiming the gospel o{ Jesus. One moment he was face to face with that incomparable Carpcnter; yet that moment changed the entire course of human historv.

Picture to yourself, {riend, what manner o{ man that must. have been that Saul of Tarsus saw that day on the road to Damascus. Can there be an iota of doubt in \-our mind that He was such a Man as never before and never since has walked this earth? Can you doubt that He was wonderful to look upon, that He overflowed with strength and r,itality. that He fairly flamed with life. and hope. and confidence, and with physical beauty and virility. in addition to His spirtual magnetism? W'hen we get that sort of a picture o{ this Jewish Carpenter. \r'e are started on the road to understanding what it was that happened to Saul. the killer, that day on the road to l)ama, scus. and to so great a multitude of other people who saw and heard Him; and we begin to glimpse the whyfor of His indelihk' impression upon billions of people who have <'ome after.

More than His physical magnihcence mu-st have heen the flaming light that shone from His countenance. A "man of sorrows" forsooth. Where do we find Him, a-" He proceeds on His mission of prea<rhing the philosophy o{ love and fellowship and understanding and forgiveness? Wherever happy people gathered together, there He was. At weddings. at friendly gatherings where men and women and little children were to be found. That He was a joyous companion seems undehatable. ['e find Him sa1 ing to His friends: "They call me a wine bibber. and a man gluttonous." We find Him changing water into wine so that the wedding feast might take place as planned. We find Him doins many things and going many places that indicate definitely thai He was a friendll . joyful. marr.elous conpanion.

Dromtic Seo Rescue from Lumber Ship

All 24 crewmen of the Alaska Cedar were saved on December 3 after a dramatic two-hour rescue from their grounded vessel amid breakers reported to be twice the height of the 2500-ton vessel. The 256-foot lumber ship was grounded Sunday in shallow water near the jetty ofr Coos Bay, Oregon, after losing power as it' put out to sea,

As huge breakers swept into the ship, a helicopter, hoverin$ low enough to be hit by a wave, dropped a line to crewmen. Coast Guardsmen anchored the 200-foot line and the sailors were brought off the ship one by one in a basket rig.

so many dealers like to deal with Globe," Hoffman concluded.

It is reported that manufacturers and exporters {rom Japan, Korea, Formosa, the Philippines, Sweden, Norway and other countries frequently fly in for a few days to consult with Hoffman and Massing to determine future market trends and sales programs. The factories often have oddsized panels or cancellation orders, and through the Globe leader department spec' ializing in distress or sub-grade materials, a huge American market has been devel' oped.

Recognizing a developing market for prefinished panels and the many problems that were encountered with foreign finishes, Globe took a new approach. After long negotiation, a constant supply of premium grade, deluxe hardwood plywood panels

were arranged for. Following months of experimentation Globe developed special types of finishes that are reported to im' prove with age.

States a company spokesman, "If you can visualize Technicolor on a panel-this is it. With the skill of Old lVorld craftsmen, Globe is producing and prefinishing a unique color-toned panel in a wide range of decorator colors."

Inasmuch as most of their sales are in this local market, Globe is prefinishing at its Los Angeles plant.

Topping off this American success story, is Globe's recent move to 9059 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles 34, California. Telephone numbers and International cable address remain the same.

The new home of Globe is approximately three times larger than the previous quarters, and will be {ully air conditioned and illuminated with the latest devices, with the most modern mechanization systems being installed.

Each room will be panelled in a difierent decor in decorator prefinished panels, so that the dealer can use them as display rooms for his customers.

Recently Globe has been appointed as authorized distributor for the Masonite Corporation, and a full line of Masonite products will be stocked at the new warehouse.

States Lou Massing, "We look forward to our biggest and most successful year yet. Many new and profrtable dealer products will be added to our large inventories at our new location. Timber Engineering Company, affiliated with the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, is nationally known for its engineering and research activities serving the lumber industry since 1933. It is probably best known by its trademark ooTECO" which identifies its many construction devices for use with lumber, and the "TECO TESTED" quality control mark appearing on the plywood, particle board, and glued laminated products of the growing number of mills to which it supplies independent quality control services.

TECO general operations headquarters is in Washington, D. C., and its extensive quality control operations are centered in Corvallis, Oregon.

Portlond lumber Compony Conlinues Growth

While other lumber firms bewail the loss of markets to Canadian imports, North

Pacific Lumber Company continues to advance steadily, if unspectacularly. Latest personnel acquisitions, one each in three divisions, are Gordon C. Johnson, Donald R. Campbell and Jorgen Oast Jacotrsen.

Johnson, who attended Oregon State College and was graduated from Montana State University with a BA degree in 195I' takes over account executive duties in the firm's Construction Lumber Division after lI years as sales manager for various Inland Empire lumber firms.

The rapidly expanding Export-Import Division has absorbed D. R. Camphell, a 1955 OSC graduate in Business Administration with a background of lumber grading gained through completion of grading classes conducted by the West Coast Lumberments Association. A native of Portland, Oregono Campbell is a member of the Portland Chamber of Commeroe World Trade and Shipping Committee. He comes to North Pacific after four years as plywood and lum'ber buyer for Wilcox-Hayes, Portland.

Jacobsen, a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, comes to the Portland lumber firm after five years with lumber companies in Copenhagen and Victoria, B.C., as well as buying and inventory control work for lumber distributing yards. He holds a BA degree from the University of Copenhagen.

Housing Slqrls In October 1962

During October 1962, the number of privately owned housing units started (nonfarm and farm) was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of I,497,W0 units, up 17 percent over the revised September L962 rate of 1,278,000 units and up 4 percent over the revised October 1961 rate of 1,443,000 units, according to preliminary estimates of the Bureau of the Census, U. S. Department of Commerce.

Part of the increase in October may result from the relatively ^,hrg" number of working days in October 1962. As indicated last month, part of the September 1962 decline in housing starts may have resulted from the relatively small number of working days in September. The housing starts series does not now include a special adjustment for working days. When sufficient experience with the current series accumulates, such an adjrrstment may be adopted.

Construction was begun on 131,500 privately and publicly owned housing units in October 1962, compared with the revised totals of 114,200 in September and 129,900 in October l96L The 129,100 privately owned units begun in October 1962 were up 15 percent over the revised total of II2,700 in September and up 3 percent over the revised October 1961 total of 124,800 units.

Nonfarm housing units totaled 128,600 units in October 1962, up 15 percent over the revised September total of 111,60O units, and only slightly higher than the revised October 196I total of l27,4OO units. Private nonfarm starts of L26,200 in October 1962 were up 15 percent over the revised September level and 3 percent greater than the October 196l total. After adjustment for seasonal variation, private nonfarm starts were at an annual rate of 1,463,000 units, up 17 percent over the revised September rate of 1,25O000 and 4 percent higher than the revised October 196l rate of 1.413.000.

El Monte, Colifornio

Private housing starts in October 1962 were higher than in September in most regions. After adjustment for seasonal variation, private starts were up 33 percent in both the South and the North Central regions, up 8 percent in the West, but down 14 percent in the Northeast.

Building permit authorizations for new privately owned housing units, on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, were down 2 percent in October 1962 from the preceding month. In October, the 10,000 places with local building permit systems authorized the construction of 106,312 new private units, equivalent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of l,169,fi)0 units. In Septcmbe5,;"1 these places authorized the construction of 95,937 new irivatii l'' units, equivalent to I,192,000 units on a seasonally adjusted annual rate basis. The seasonal adjustment of the building permit statis= tics takes into account the number of working days per month.

nel are ideally suited to market the Contropress Senior and Contropress Junior machines made by Litzler for the woodworking industry.

The Litzler Contropress Senior upgrades inxepensive wide panels, by surface cleaning, adhesive coating and laminating finishing films in one continuous cycle through the machine. The machine makes it possible for plywood particle board, chip board, special fiber boards and other panel stocks to be upgraded into a broader range of application, such as in furniture and cabinetry, pre-fabricated homes, commercial buildings, mobile homes and other uses only limited by the imagination of architects, designers and craftsmen.

The Contropress Junior functions exactly as the Senior Model only on narrow width stock for trim, decorative edging, and on other similar products.

The Coe field sales engineering organization has had long experience in providing technical assistance to firms in the woodworking and related fields.

Products in Action

How can building products, as well as architecture, be shown to best advantage in photographs? Julius Shulman, one of America's best-known architectural photographers, advises manufac. turers to photograph their products "in action." o'Always photograph a building material in its working environnrent," Shulmah said.

Lumber, for example, should be shown as it is used as a structural member, as flooring or as panelingi and it should be shown

ffi' An exhibit of Shulman's work demonstrating the technique he tr. employs in photographing structures and materials is on display at the Building Center, 7933 West 3rd St., Los Angeles, from December 3 through December 31. The Center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.*.

Over l0O photographs representing a quarter of a century of architectural photography are included in the exhibit. These photogaphs, many of which were taken from Shulman's new hook, Phongraphing Architecture and, Interiors, Whitney Li brary of Design, N.Y., trace the birth and development of modern architectule in the United States.

OBITUARY

H. Y. Simpson, 65, for seventeen years executive vice president of West Coast Lumbermen's Association, died at his Portland home, Sunday morning, November 25, of a heart attack.

'Simpson was internationally known as a lumber sales expert and merchandiser. Follobing his graduation from the University of Oregon in 1923, he entered the lumber business after a brief experience at banking, and he spent the next 40 years in various key executive posts in the lumber industry both here and abroad.

Simpson was born at Ashland, Oregon, July 18, 1897 and, when World War I started, he left the University for a tour of duty in France in the artillery, and returned

'Washington, D.C., office, where Simpson

served with distinction during the war years. In 1946 upon Greeley's retirement, Simpson was named as executive vice president.

Under Simpson's direction WCLA moved from a war to a peacetime footing, and he started a national advertising and promotion program which has become outstanding in the nation's lumber industry. He first advocated the use of full color and full page magazine advertisements to sell west coast lumber, Under his leadership WCLA used every modern mass communications media to tell the story of this region's lumber. Even though his national budget was limited, the quality of the merchandising and promotion material was so outstanding the WCLA advertisements and literature have won all manner of national awards for excellency in the past seventeen years.

Under Simpson's direction a general overhauling of west coast lumber grades was successfully undertaken, the first major change in 50 years. Grade numbers were changed to more realistic names, Simpson also took a leading role in the highly successful promotion of lower grades of lumber, a real problem in this industry where much of the ripe timber develops a high percentage of lower grades.

Upon his retirement from active leadership of WCLA on June 1 of this year, he was named vice president and retained in a consulting status. He had been in ill health for nearly a year. He is survived by his widow, Mable; by a son Robert, Portland; a daughter, Mrs. Jane O'Donnell, Lafayette, California; a brother Glenn, of Ashland; and five grandchildren.

Relief Through Shipping

i.. Northwest lumber shippers interested in reviving Puerto Rico ;! 1 ' ol". are urged to file ai soon as possible their petltions for permits to use foreign ships-a service that promises to slash shipping expense by more than one-third.

Several major cargo shippers, including Georgia-Pacific Cor-

poration, Simpson Timber Company and Dant & Russell, Inc.,

have taken this first step toward breaking Canada's present

monopoly in Puerto Rico's lumber market.

These lumber firms have applied formally to rle U. S. Mari-

, time Adrninistration for exemptions to the Jones Act require-

ment that they must use American ships when transporting to

any port in the states and U. S. possessions.

The first hearing under the Neuberger amendment. booked

November 27 in Washington, D.C., involves only Georgia-Pacific's

request, but the maritime agency has indicattid several subse.

quent petitions might be heard together, and that such a hearing

could be held in Portland.

G. Cleveland Edgett, executive vice president of the West Coast

Lumbermen's Association, urged that lumber shippers who de-

sire permits for use of lower-cost foreign bottoms to Puerto Rico,

file immediately, and ask for their hearing in Portland.

Edgett pointed out that the need for an immediate start is

heightened by the time limitation of one year from enactment,

l set in Senator Maurine Neuberger's amendment to the Jones Act.

Her bill was enacted in October.

".' Lumber concerns filing thus far for relief under Public Law

87-877 report rhat the cuirent rare filed by established U.S. ship-

ping lines is $56.94 per thousand board feer, compared to a

world rate of about $35. British Columbia sawmills enjoy an

advantage o{ more than $20 a thousand on shipping costs alone to

Puerto Rico.

F,' West Coast mills have been squeezed entirely out of this mar-

ket for two years. British Columbia shipped 73,000,000 feet of

Iumber to the Caribbean island last year, and the 1962 volume

, will exceed that. Ten years ago U. S. mills supplied 70 percent

of the Pacific area lumber sold in Puerto Rico.

In preparing their statements for the Maritime Administration,

both Georgia-Pacific and Simpson found that the only two domes-

tic lines with Northwest service decline to offer space for lumber to that destination.

Canadian shippers are able to move deckloads to Puerto Riro' on the same ships that haul their lumber to the United Kingdom or U. S. east coast, thus assuring full cargoes for the foreign fli$ bottoms they engage.

Northwest mills do not expect to be able to ship full cargoes while rebuilding their own sales on the island, but they hope to muster up to a deckload at a time, up to some 7fi),000 feet, Edgett pointed out.

Several foreign flag ship operators have expressed interest in this type of business from the cargo mills of the region

The Old Ploce

The old, old lady and the old, old man, both bowed and decrepit with age, were having a reunion. They had been kids together, had lived side by side, had gone to school together, and now after many years they were having a wonderful vicil re-living the past. They talked of the old farm, the old schoo$ their old homes, their old friends, and o'Do you remember this?t' and "Do you remember that," held the center of the stage. The old lady was quite deaf, and she was only getting part of what he said, but she was doing her best. They had just been talking of her lovely old home, when suddenly the old man changed the subject. He said:

o'You know, I used to take you across my knee and spank you when you were a kid."

And the old lady said:

"You wouldn't know the old place now."

"Grand Canyon - South Rim," a colorful scene of an indian family around a cookfire at the edge of the Grand Canyon of Arizona, is the title of Santa Fe Railway's 1963 calendar.

Reproduced from an original oil painting by the late E. L Couse of Taos, N.M,, the 1963 calendar is the 24th issued by the railroad which has carried a painting by Couse. Indian scenes have been featured since 1914. with the exception of 1915, when a picture of the San Diego Exposition was used, and 1919-20, during which years the railroad

industry was nationalized.

The railroad annually distributes more than 450,000 of the calendars. Illustrations are traditionally chosen from a collection of more than 600 southwestern paintings which are displayed throughout the road's ticket and executive offices.
