It is said that when William Jennings Bryan asked for the hand of the daughter of John Baird, he quoted from Proverbs: "Whosoever findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor, of the ":tU..

Baird was a Bible student himself and he replied by quoting Paul, who said: "While he that marryeth doeth well, he that marryeth not, doeth better." Randolph Churchill said during World War II that a British soldier is a better fighter than a German soldier because the Britisher fights with a laugh, while the German fights with a scowl. Tqhoe l illwork Co. Brings Deolers to the Product To Give'em the Profit Picture First-hond

From June to November isn't very long, as the shifting sands of time tell us, but it was long enough for an energetic Tahoe Millwork Company staff to build a solid dealer organization of 83 outlets for the Morgan woodwork line it distributes in California. Starting from scratch, Tahoe has moulded a hustling retail marketing organization in amazingly short time.

Bruce \Malton, Jr., is president, and Henry M. Alsaker is general manager of the two Tahoe organizations : Tahoe Forest Products Company and its subsidiary, Tahoe Millrvork Company. Kenneth D. Gordon is sales manager of Tahoe Millwork Co.

Mr. Alsaker states that a superior product, plus a wellorganized and integrated sales promotion program, have had a major share in quick dealer acceptance.

"Our complete line of Morgan Woodwork fills an important need for most retail lumber dealers," Mr. Alsaker declares. "It gives them a high-quality woodwork line that is competitively priced. And even more important, it backs them up with a great volume of colorful merchandising and sales promotion material that makes selling easier.

"Included in the merchandising material made available to our dealers are full color counter cards, kitchen planning kits, showroom displays, colorful folders and booklets, ad mats, as well as one of the industry's most complete and beautiful catalogs," he added. The Morgan catalbg is 350 pages, mostly in color, and dealers declare it is a powerful selling tool.

Tahoe maintains close liaison with its dealers by holding frequent sales meetings at the main office and warehouse in West Sacramento. One such meeting was held in October, and top sales and merchandising executives of the Nlorgan Company attended and helped present the dealer sales orientation program. More than 150 dealers, architects, builders and contractors attended last month's week-long meetings.

Meetings are held in the large display room at the Tahoe warehouse. The display features two kitchen exhibits, as rvell as folding doors, louvered doors, entrances and other products distributed by the firm. The display room is available to all Tahoe dealers for showing Morgan products to tl-reir prospects.

The Tahoe headquarters are strategically located on Highways 40 and 99, principal routes radiating from Sacramento. It is just a few minutes from downtown Sacramento on the busy highway to San Francisco. The main office building, containing the display room and warehouse, is lo-

BRUSH INDUSTBIAT TUMBIR COMPANY

Losr Goll for the Big Deqler Show ln Ghiccgo; Exposition to Show Bigger Profits in Reroil Yord Operotion Through Soles Aid

"You asked for it" could be the appropriate preface to the program of dealer meetings and.features coming up next week at the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association's 1958 Building Products Exposition in Chicago, November 22-25, says Exposition Program Chairman Diyo W. Johnson. Building material dealers throughout the country have shown a decided preference this year for subjects in the field of merchandising, Mr. Johnson indicated. '

"For this reason," the Program chairman said, "the NRLDA Exposition at Chicago will concentrate on a subject close to the heart of every lumber and building material dealer from coast to coastgstgs."

-"Prosperity Through Salesmanship" will be the subject of a pace-s_etting talk at the opening event of the four-day program. Scheduled f6r 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 23, at the International Amphitheatre is an unusual and interesting session dealing with personal management in which both serious and amusing situations will 5-e dramatized in the manner of a courtroom procedure. On Monday morning the dealer will be able to select from three concurrent pro- gtams the sales subject in which he is most interested. l'Hgr.y.to Makq Buyers Out of Farmers" will feature a panel ingluding tlree building material dealers who specialize in selling the farm market.

"What's Cooking in Kitchens," will relate some of the unsuccessful as well as the successful features of kitchen merchandising operation in a metropolitan market area. The bread and butter business of home improvement and spe- cialty selling will get the "positive" treitment from a panel ot home improvement specialists.

The new-"Sales Huddle" features will be scheduled each afternoon in the merchandising area at Exposition Hall and will include questions, answers, and disiussions on sales stimulation for many product and market classifications. Th9s.e qT."ll, specialized gatherings represent literally a multi-million dollar merchandising consultation service which the Elcposition is providing t-hrough the cooperation of participating exhibitors and alre free-to everyoine who attends the Expositibn.

Designed to handle only about 50 dealers at a. time in order to give them individual attention, the Lu-Re-Co huddles will be repeated several times during each of the four days Saturday through Tuesday. A major feature of each huddle session will be the liberal exchange of questions and answers on merchandising mefhods and devices between attending dealers and participating manufacturers' sales experts.

Taking part in the merchandising discussions will be Dan Sedgwick, merchandising director for Douglas Fir Plywood Association; Dave R. Norcross, manager, product sales, of Timber Engineering Company, and Raymon H. Harrell, executive vice-president for Lumber Dealers Research Council.

Caloric is expected to cover in a short presentation what the "merchandising people at the top of this in-

Hoosier Humorist Herb Shriner will headline the sparkling entertainment bill lined up for the most festive social event of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association's four-day Building Products Exposition in Chicago this month. Sharing top honors at the Exposition's fifth anniversary Ball will be dark-eyed and beautiful Maria Neglia, Italian-born violin virtuoso with an engaging wit.

The gala evening, which will climax the Exposition's social occasions, will get under way in the handsome, crystal-chandeliered Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hilton hotel at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24. All Exposition visitorsdealers, exhibitors, wives, and guests-are invited to attend. Business suits and cocktail frocks will be as "correct" as more formal attire. Guests will enjoy a carefully chosen menu of banquet fare, following which Exposition General Chairman Phil Creden will introduce the program of music, dancing, and high good humor. Bud Dinwiddie's orchestra will provide a tuneful background of continuous music throughout dinner and swingable rhythms for late evening dancing.

Lom-Loc Chorocter Woods Add Decorqtive Accents Inside ond Out

Lumbermen who are concerned about the declining use of wood construction and want to do something about it can take a note from the Ed Fountain Lumber Co., Los Angeles, which has captured the imagination of the building industry with Lam-Loc Character Woods, a line of decorative wood paneling designed to take advantage of trends in the use of textured material for interior wall coverings and attractive accents for exteriors.

Lam-Loc Contemporary Cedar is an attractive peckytype cedar paneling wtricti is guaranteed to have an overill pecky design and eliminate the common problem of backing-up pecks which go all the way through. These unusual characteristics are obtained bv careful selection of 1" cedar

The paneling is then reduced to a fu" thickness by plan- ing the back-up boards and the pecky surface is sandblasted to remove fungus particles, or the paneling can be left rough sawn with decay particles in place where a more rugged appearance is desired. ural or finished in popular Driftwood, Desert, Clay, White, etc., contemporary colors. Designers are using Contemporary Cedar for an elegant touch in living rooms, for an appealing atmosphere in dens and find it highly adaptable for highlights,in lanai areas and for creating interest centers on exteriors.

The laminating process is the same as used for producing Lam-Loc Beams. Waterproof glue is used and boards are laminated under uniform pressures of 150 lbs. per square inch in a special heat and humidity controlled atmosphere.

Lam-Loc Frontier Wood is the name of a livelv westerntype paneling which features several of the wlst's most famous' cattle brands. This paneling uses the same background wood as Contemporary Cedar, but it is hand'branded with designs occuiring in a random pattern about 12" apart. To make sure Frontier Wood is authentic, Ed Fountain employed the famous old blacksmith at Knott's

.tlfr. Dealer-

Berry Farm to forge the irons. Word has it that Ed Fountain had his horse-hair rope all loosened up and a roarin' campfire for processin' the new wood, but modern methods prevailed, so the brands are heated on a gas stove and ap- plied by a California contemporary (illustrated above).

_ Of course, cradle cowpokes are the biggest boosters of Lam-Loc Frontier Wood, but the older set find it interesting for dens, special accent walls and to put the WEST in ranch-type homes. Cattle barons and Texas oilmen even find it necessary for proper office decor, according to Fountain.

The promotion of these two interesting panelings is another phase of the story worth telling. First, Fountain employed a group of manufacturer's representatives to handle sales contacts. Reynolds, Buker and Associates tell the Fountain story to architects, builders, interior decorators and several other groups likely to influence the use of Fountain's Charactei W6ods.

Regular Fountain salesmen contact lumber dealers, who sell the paneling to customers. All prospects are referred to local lumber dealers by the sales organizations. A program of publicity, displays at trade shows, a permanent display at the Los Angeles Building Center and beautifully illustrated brochures are all part of a coordinated program to inform prospects about Fountain Character Woods.

Lumber dealers throughout the country are contacted

Fountain reports the new character woods are being enthusiastically accepted by all members of the building industry and indications point to the desire for other types which are now under consideration.

It's interesting to note that Fountain has priced these panelings so there is a good profit for the lumber dealer and yet the price is very appealing to customers.

Fountain has oroved wood is a vital element in creative building, and thiough imaginative approaches like this, its use will undoubtedly reach new levels of importance in all types of structures.

The Retort Discourteous

When the history of famous retorts is writtenand what a wonderful book that would make-close up to the top of the list will be ranked the retort made by a famous Frenchman to a still more famous Frenchwoman. The woman was the scintillating and much-loved George Sand. The man was one of her great loves, Jules Sandeau.

The love of Jules was growing cold. One day the famous Frenchwoman charged him with infidelity. Briefly he acknowledged his guilt. She struck a tragic attitude and exclaimed in a voice heavy with pathos:

"Sir, My heart is a grave !"

"A grave, Madam?" said the suave Frenchman. "It's a cemetery."

Lewis Silvera, president of Silvera Lumber Co. in Antioch, is not trying to keep his location a secret. Located two blocks from the main intersection of town, Dealer Silvera beckons the consumer trade with this smartlooking advertising sign which is kept ablaze with lights during the night.

Lewis Silvera, who is right up there at the top when it comes to running an up-to-date shop, recently remodeled his yard and added to his showroom (CLM, 9/15/57) for the convenience of Antioch's do-it-yourself trade. Since that time, he has enjoyed the numberone position as Antioch's leading one-stop center for all home improvement and remodeling business.

Billboard or sign advertising such as this can really pay off big when yard is located off main thoroughfares (which more and more yards are today).

Then he came upon an elephant standing in the shade of a tree. He stalked up to the elephant, snarled, showed his big teeth, and demanded to be told who was the king of beasts.

The elephant wound his trunk around the lion and threw him up in the branches of the tree, from which he came

"Well, you don't have to get mad just because you don't know the answer."

For he was a dumb lion who just wouldn't learn. There are men like that. too.

ager Frederick H. Kranz of the retail yard in the beach city. The promotion was through the combined efforts of the local lumberyard and United States Plywood Corp., and showed the varieties of hardwood plywood produced by U.S. Plywood.

The retail yard donated the space inside the booth to the Santa Monica Kiwanis Club to sell their Christmas dates for the boys' work in the area. More than 10,000 people attended the three-day show, which is the year's big trade show in Santa Monica and includes all major manufacturing companies of the Bay area. It is sponsored by the Industrial division of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce.

"We were very pleased with the results and good publicity resulting in sales of plywood, and particularly with the excellent promotion of the Kiwanis charity program," says Dealer Fred Kranz. "I believe this shows how this type of civic activity not only helps the retail lumberyard but serves a community purpose as well."

Two large reforestation projects on two ranger districts of the Lassen National Forest have been completed with planting of 68,000 ponderosa pine seedlings on 80 acres in lhe Almanor district. Willow Creek (Humboldt County), Calif. -Construction workers building an access timber road in this "last. frontier" of the Old West were carrying rifles last month and traveling in pairs, convinced that "Big Foot," a California version of the "Abominable Snow Man of the Himalavas." is real and not a hoax, reported The Sin Francisco Examiner.

Contractor Ray Wallace, in charge of the project, said he was convinced the huge, human-like footprints were genuine after finding blood on the trail. He said he first thotrght it was an abnormally large grizzly bear like he'd hunted in Canada but gave up the idea when the prints showed no claws, but stubby toes. He added a grizzly print would have showed all fours, but this creature walked upright.

Senqtor Arnold Speoks On lumber Economy

Susanville, Calif.-Directors, supervisors and road commissioners of nine counties met here last month for a regular session of the Northern California Sufervisors Assn. Senator Stanley Arnold, one bf the speakers, said the essentials for a stable lumber economy are sound taxation, careful cutting and planned reforestation. He declared that in the counties of Lassen, Modoc and Plumas, nine mills have closed since 1950, resulting in virtual abandonment of three towns, serious loss of employment and serious loss of taxes in others.

Heading the new division, Joe Wilson, an experienced young lumberman, has proven his sales and administrative abilities as manager of Chase Lumber Company, San Jose, for the past eight years.

An Air Force pilot during WWII, Colorado-born Joe came to California during 1945 to work as a lumber salesman in a San Jose retail yard. A strike in the yard soon left Joe a lumber salesman with no lumber to sell, so he went to work unloading cars for Chase. In a short time, he progressed to a steady yard job-then into office work and inside sales. In 7949 Joe was named assistant manag'er, and, in 1950, manager of the Chase operation at San Jose.

A Good Debtor

A good debtor is one whose applied earning equipment, whether it be property, muscle or brain, indicates sufEcient income to take care of the line of credit desired, and whose known inclinations warrant that in a case of temporary failure, his honor will remain intact.

Above the Clouds

When an airplane strikes a bank of fog or clouds that dims the vision of the driver, he turns the nose of the machine upward and fies above the clouds. So do thinking men in all their problems of life. There is always a sky above the cloud and fog.

She Understood

An employer tvas interviewing an applicant for a secretarial position, and asked: "I suppose you understand the importance of punctuation?"

"Yes, sir," she said, "I always get to work on time."

The House by the Side of the Rood

There are hermit souls that live withdrawn

In the place of their self-content;

There are souls like stars that dwell apart

In a fellow-less firmament;

There aie pioneer souls that blaze their paths

Where the highways never ran,

But let me live by the side of the road

And be a friend to man.

Let me live in a house by the side of the road, Where the race of men go by,

The men who are good and the men who are bad, As good and as bad as I;

I would not sit in the scorner's seat

Or hurl the cynic's ban,

Let me live in a house by the side of the road

And be a friend to man.

I see from my house by the side of the road, By the side of the river of life-

The men who press with the ardor of hopeThe men who are faint with strife;

But I turn not away from their smiles or their tears

(Both parts of an Infinite Plan), Let me live in a house by the side of the road And be a friend to man.

Let me live in a house by the side of the road, Where the race of men go by; They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong, Wise, foolishand so am f. Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat, Oh hurl the cynic's ban?

Let me live in a house by the side of the road And be a friend to man.

Self-Esteem

When the brilliant Englishman, Oscar Wilde, visited New York, he reported to the customs inspectors that he brought to this country "nothing but my genius."

Good Advice

Jean Cocteau is quoted as telling a highly intelligent friend: "Never associate with idiots on their own levels, because, being an intelligent man, you will try to deal with them on their level, and on their level they'll beat you every time."

Stonley on Work:

"I don't believe that an unemployed man, however amiable and otherwise respectable, was ever, or ever can be, really happy. As work is our life, show me what you can do, and I will show you what you are. Love of one's work is the best preventative against petty anxieties, and the annoyances that arise out of indulged self-love."

Tahoe supplied the exhibit space and installed an attractive birch kitchen. Dealers were invited to help man the booth, and sales leads were turned over to the dealers for followup. A large number of sales resulted.

The exhibit was a big success and attracted much interest from homeowners. Although three other kitchen exhibits were featured at the Fair, dealers were convinced that the distinctive Morgan flush type, contour-styled cabinets had the greatest public acceptance.

Tahoe also exhibited at the Yolo Countv Fair in WoodIand and experienced good consumer reaction.

Mr. Gordon says: "Even greater effort will be expended next year in home shows and county fairs, and we have ordered space for a booth at the State Fair that will be 150/o larger than this year's exhibit. We have found that Morgan Kitchens will sell themselves when the public has a chance to examine and compare their quality with other kitchens. We plan to stress this kind of proven sales promotion during the coming year,"

In addition to these efrective sales promotion activities, Tahoe backs its dealers with regional advertising in newspaper and radio. Television is planned for a later date.

Dealers are invited to call on Tahoe sales and merchandising experts for assistance in specific sales problems and presentations. Ed Frye, kitchen consultant, heads up the Tahoe merchandising staff, which is being increased to keep pace with the rapidly expanding distribution pattern. Morgan woodwork products are offered exclusively to retail lumber dealers and kitchen specialists.

months, but feels that the surface has just been scratched. Further dealer expansion will be pushed and, along with this expansion, additional merchandising manpower will be added to help dealers do a better sales promotion job.

"Many important dealer territories are still available," Mr. Alsaker maintains, "and we will open them as quickly as we can cover all the bases. We have stressed building a close-knit dealer organization here in the Sacramento Valley and Northern San Joaquin Valley where we can work closely with our dealers. This area is now pretty well firmed up, and we're about ready to open other areas, and it will be our plan to work closely with our dealers in these ateas, too."

And judging by the methodical way Tahoe has progressed this far, they will !

Located across the front, or west side of the main building, are 2400 square feet of modern, sound controlled, aircoi'ditioned offices, which serve as a "showcase" for the many products distributed. The plywood displayed is not in the iorm of sample-racks, or diipiay sectioni, liut is used in a typical application on the basis of "one kind. pe1 1o-omr" All flb-ors ar6 -covered with wood-grain tile, which blends with the one painted wall in most rooms, and the windows are all covered with Venetian blinds which blend with both the floor and wall color.

The general business office is in Antique Birch, and the credit office adjacent to it is finished in American Cherry, with furniture to match.

Another office has incorporated Blond Ash as the wall paneling, and the manager's office has used American Walnut.

A large room has been designated as the salesmen's room, and thd plywood used in tfiis is llarbor's own product, Harborwave, the sculptured panel.

An auxiliary entrance half is done in Rustic Birch,- and the main access hall leading to all offices has utilized another Harbor product, Harborite, an overlaid fir plywood (originated by Harbor).

Harbor's aim is to constantly improve the service rendered their customers, and to continue their sales policy of selling on a strictly wholesale basis.

They believe the Dealer is an important link in the chain of distribution, and is entitled to whatever protection is possible against encroachment in his legitimate field of endeavor.

Protects lumber, wallboard, other materials from sun, rain, dirt. Covers are tough with extra reenforcing along edges and corners. Call or write for information on many standard sizes and low cost.

Because of this policy, customers need have no fear of sending in their o*n retail customers to visit the Harbor warehouse, and to discuss their plywood problems with any member of the Harbor staff. (Visitors are most welcome any time between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.)

Uling a fie6t of modern trucks, Harbor Plyrvood is now seiving the greater part of the general Los Angeles trading area on a 24-hour basis.

Increasing efiort is exerted to improve the handling_.of will-call orilers to eliminate any unnecessary delay. With the'excellent geographical location, uncongested access roads, and prompt attention to telephone orders, customers should experienct little delay in picking up stock at Ha_rbor.

John R. Northam, having been associated with the Harbor organization since it was formed many years ag'o, was established as manager of the Los Angeles operation six years ago. He is ably assisted by Lou Bishara, who has served in not only the sales department but also in a promotional capacity throughout the United States.

The inside sales department, the coordination of orders and g,er.reral office supervision is expertly handled by Pat Carroll, well known in the Los Angeles area and long associated with Harbor.

Earl Blackledge, recently transferred from the Harbor plant at Riddle, Oregon, serves as the branch accountant and credit manager.

\Varehouse and delivery supervision is delegated to another experienced man, John Bonner, who hai been with Harbor for many years.

The outside sales staff, which is clue for immediate expansion, includes G. P. Van de Lester, H. D. Bacor.r, David Brant, Rex Little and Will LaRusch. An exDansion in the promotional department is also imminent.

LDRC's Ray Harrell will outline briefly Lu-Re-Co's new certification and quality seal program for lumber dealers. Extra features of the Lu-Re-Co sales huddle will be demonstrations of new methods and ideas in modular building and a showing of new construction components. Among the latter will be a new intermediate truss that eliminates loadbearing beams for L, T, and H shaped houses. Another recent development to be demonstrated is DFPA's new box beam now being utilized for floor and roof beams, garage door openings, school buildings, and other commercial installations.

Securing increased profits through reduced operating costs by effective utilization of materials handling equipment was the theme of recent Association meetings held in Bakersfield and Fresno. and shortlv to be announced in other Northern California areas. Retognizing that labor costs have risen faster than manhour output, and that such costs can be expected to continue theii steady rise, the dealers were told that it is in the area of handling costs that they must look for increased efficierrcy-for a reduc-

tion of $!000 in operating.expense will normally yield as much additional profit as a $20,000 increase in volume.

The more than 90 employes and dealers who attended the meetings were shown an outstanding materials handling film produced for the retail lumber industry by the U.S. Gypsum Company, which dramatically demonstrated recommended handling procedures. Reduced labor costs cannot be achieved solely by "cleaning up the yard-even though this is often an excellent beginning," the dealers learned, but yard operations must form parl of a co-ordinated program with warehousing, yard layout, movement engineering and planned ordering.

_ Commenting upon the film, Jack Wright of the Hyster Corporation, who participated in the Fresno meeting, noted that many dealers could earn increased operating profits .!-ply by using smaller lift trucks as well as workihg more closely with mills and suppliers and urging them to-divide their load to fit li{t capacity. Among several ideas, he also

noted, as did Hal Berg of Hyster Corporation, who participated in the Bakersfield meeting, that in many operations dealers could profitably use optional fork lift attathments, such as the end-loader and wide swivel.

Management Seminar

The Lumber Merchants Association will sponsor a management seminar in Palo Alto, January 78-23, under the direction of Arthur Hood. The program, which will be limited to managers and owners, will include extensive review of managerial practices affecting the modern retail yard as well as presentation of thought-provoking ideas, discussion of industry trends, etc. Registration is expected to be heavy and advance application is suggested.

CATIFORIIIA BUILDING PBRMITS FOR SEPTEMBER

Western light construction continues ahead of. L957, with dwellings particularly strong. T.he picture in September, as gathered by Western Building, is based on figures from 384 areas for total permits, 357 areas for dwelling.

Dwelling units are ap 29.9/o, from 1(338 to 21,C64l. valuation is up 2B/o, from $172,549,897 to $221,083,495.

Figures on the very healthy Western dwelling construction industry show that permits are up more than valuation. The general pattern in recent years, during the steady climb in housing star,ts, has been valuation up more than fotal permits. The ratio shown in September's figures has generally existed for several months and possibly ,indicates some firming of housing costs. Every state reported dwelling activity up,
