Fame doesn't always bring financial fortune. Take the case of the immortal Edgar Allan Poe. The highest pay he ever received was $800 a year in salary, and that was more than the income he got from the ten famous books he wrote. Great writers and jntll"l" often live on a thin diet.
"I am a little thing with a big meaning. I help everybody. I unlock doors, open hearts, dispel prejudice. I create friendships and good will. I inspire respect and admiration. Everybody loves me. I bore nobody. I violate no law. I cost nothing. Many have praised me. None have condemned me. I please those of both high and low degree. I am useful every moment of the day. I AM couRTESY."
Immanuel Kant, one of the acknowledged great thinkers of all time, wrote: "'We are told that 'man is the noblest work of God.' But, since no one has ever said so except himself, we should accept that statement with a grain of salt.t' ,. :F *
Adversity is the state in which a man most easily becomes acquainted with himself, for it is then that he is free from fatterers.
It was Emerson who said: "With consistency a gicat soul has absolutely nothing to do. Speak what you think today with words as hard as iron balls, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradicts everything you said today."

There are all sorts of men in the world who have been praised for all sorts of things-but the first prize, the blue ribbon, honorable mention, and likewise three cheers, for the man who always keeps his word.
There is one thing certain about business: it can wait for you just as long as you T" X"tj for it.
The five cardinal principles of business are: to properly equip yourself to supply your trade; to get the orders; to deliver the goods; to keep down expenses; to collect the bills. {. * rl.
A business argument that belongs in the age of flying horses and hairy mastodons is-"It isn't what my tradg wants" when something new comes along. Your trade wants all that is best, and it is up to expert merchants to show them what's what. George Washington didn't want an automobile, either. O1U t*o"*Onow why.
A very well-dressed and very drunk young man sat down in a hotel lobby and fell asleep. A friendly wag noticed him, and slipped a little package of limberger cheese inside his coat. The drunk rose, sniffed, and walked out of the lobby. Soon he returned and sat down again, as he remarked: "The whole world smells bad."
It's all in the way you look at it. It is an ordinary human fault to judge the whole world by their immediate situation. ***
Lincoln said: "From this day on, f mean to do the best I can. If I am right, time will prove it. If I am not right, then all the angels swearing I am right will not make itso." * * *
Always laugh when you can, it is cheap medicine; merriment is a philosophy not well understood. It is the sunny side of existence.-"otd ?tt;".*
"Books," wrote Henry D. Thoreau, "are the treasured wealth of the world, the fit inheritance of generations and nations. Books, the oldest and best stand naturally and rightfully on the shelves of every cottage. They have no cause of their own to plead, but while they enlighten and sustain the reader, his common sense will not refuse them. Their authors are a natural and irresistible aristocracy in every sociity and, more than kings or emperors, exert an infuence on mankind."

What IS 'QraLity Control'l
By Frederick H. KRANZ Monoger, Golden Stote Lumber Co. Sqntq Monicq, Colifornicl
(Ed,itor's note: The recent October 7 front-cover ad'vertisement of The CALIFORNIA I-UMBER MERCHANT caused Dealer Kranz to rezlrite a speech he was scheduled to deliver at a local business school on the su,biect of "Quality Control." Believing that other reta'i,I lumbermen zai'il be interested in MrKranls talk, it is reported here.)
On October l, 1956, the cover of The CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT showed an advertisement for White Brothers which had in large red letters, QUALITY CONTROL. Then in black-"What it is-Shipping the proper grade, selected by experts from properly cared for inventories at proper moisture content with quick and efficient service." This is only part of Quality Control.
The Quality Control department's objective is to receive and ship that quality of lumber that will yield the maximum profit to the company. The term "Quality'Control" indicates those decisions and actions used throughout an organization to control quality.
The problems and concepts of industrial quality control are brought to life by the basically different view points of the buyer and the seller. The buyer demands quality of a specific level and a low price. He demands protection against his acceptance and use of items that will result in rejection by the building inspectors. The seller demands a specific quantity level and markup. He demands protection against the customer or building inspector rejecting a good item.
As a result of the conflicting view points of the buyer and seller, a third party is often required to decide their dis-
pute. The third party most often used in quality disputes is the West Coast Lumbermen's Association. However, the best method of preventing disputes is for the lumber company to have a good quality control section.
Quality control is one of the family of controls used in industry today. It is part of the team with inventory control, production control, budgetary control, etc. It is not only a member of the team but, if it is to work effectively, it must be a first-string player and a real sixty-minute man. The quality control section should include one resident grader and have the cooperation of every department in the business.
It would be nice if quality could be added to lumber like a paint job. Since it can not, the quality control section must carry the ball in each operation.
Contractors specifications should be checked. Purchase order specifications should be set. Incoming lumber should be checked to see that it conforms with the purchase orders. Outgoing lumber should be checked for grade. Machine tolerances should be set. Loaders should be watched to see that they follow instructions.
The entire olreration should be quality conscious and work with the quality control men.
A brief history of quality control will show its current importance to all branches of industry.
In 1924, Walter A. Shewhart introduced the quality control charts which now bear his name.
In 1926 to 19D, Dodge and Romig worked on acceptance sampling for the Bell Telephone System.
In 1934, General Leslie E. Simon worked on acceptance sampling for the U.S. Army.
In 1945, A. Wald published the statistical relationships used in sequential analysis.
1942 to 1946 brought the most important developments in quality control as they were then installed in most of the industries supplying the U.S. Government during the
1950, Mil-St.-105.4' specified the sampling procedure be used by the government.
Now Mil-Q-5923 states the conditions for suppliers

the U.S. Government. Certain quotations from this paper will show the importance that our government places on quality control:.
"The contractor shall develop and maintain an effective and economical quality control system. The quality control system shall assure that adequate inspection coverage is maintained throughout the entire process of manufacture, including packaging and shipping. Evidence of required inspection shall be provided by the contractor prior to submission for acceptance. Objective evidence will be evaluated and verified by the consumer representative."
It is important here that it is up to the supplier to develop, maintain and prove this system of guality control. The word "economical" is used and implies a system of acceptance sampling or control charts.
Acceptance sampling is used to determine as economically as possible whether material is of acceptable quality. There are many kinds of sampling all based upon mathematical statistical theory, but requiring only a knowledge of arithmetic by the inspector using them. Perhaps the simplest is described in Mil-Std-105A. Sampling serves as the best compromise between lW/o grading and an educated guess, as it gives a calculated risk.
Control charts are used primarily to determine if a machine or process is producing as it should. These charts are useable only on long runs. Control charts were devised by statisticians but are quiie simple to use and have many applications in business and industry. Perhaps the best description of their use is the Grant's book.

Hundreds of lumber and building materials dealers are cashing in on the popularity of CTq[veras qriality cements. Calaveras. givee you a full line of cements under one brand name, from a single solrrce of supply:
The quality control system is a system for making decisions relative to the quality status of a product. Trvo important parts of a quality control system are the acceptance sampling and control charts. These aid in achieving the objective of the quality control system, this is the prevention of defective merchandise.
A successful quality control department will prevent the delivery of such low-grade lumber as will lose customers, cause excessive complaints or rejected material. It will also prevent the delivery of a grade too high for its use.
If the system is properly set up and working as it should, it will give warning of anticipated trouble in customers relations, show the underlying cause of wasteful production, lower the costs of reinspection, lower the amount of scrap and rework.
It will also yield a more uniform product, give quality assurance, promote a more efificient use of material and give better customer relations.
Top qualiff Calaveras products give you another advantage-rapid delivery to all parts of Northern California (and in the case of Calaveras white, throughout the eleven Western states). Start stocking Calaveras today!

Georgio-Pocific Gets Vclst Hommond Lumber Co.
Georgia-Pacific Corporation announced that it had purchased October 22 all the assets of Hammond Lumber Company, a Delaware corporation with principal places of business in San Francisco and Samoa, California, and Chicago, Illinois, for a total consideration of approximately 75 million dollars. This follows the granting of .an option to Georgia-Pacific on these properties about five months ago, and is said to be the largest financial transaction ever recorded in the forest products industry in California.
The assets include in excess of 4 billion feet of old-growth standing timber, and the timberlands, predominantly California redwood, regarded in the trade as one of the finest stands in existence and believed to be more than l0% of all the commercial redwood. Also included in the purchase are approximately $27,300,000 in current assets, all plants, facilities and related equipment and inventories, along with 33 retail lumber yards and building supply stores and accompanying real estate located largely in the Los Angeles area. fn commenting, O. R. Cheatham, president of GeorgiaPacific, said that arrangements were being made to sell off some of these properties unrelated to the Hammond Redwood operations for about $10,000,000.
The principal Hammond timber holdings in Humboldt county, and main plants at Eureka and Samoa, California, are adjacent to the Georgia-Pacific major holdings to the north at Toledo and Coos Bay, Oregon. All are deep water ports and connected by rail, waterway and highway. In total, the purchase brings the Georgia-Pacific timber holdings in the area to more than 12 billion feet.
The Hammond operations and properties, it was said, will be integrated into Georgia-Pacific's diversified forest products operations.
Various improvements and incieases in utilization are being studied, including the ultimate utilization of the waste and salvage materials from the Hammond mills by the paper and chemical industries. Mr. Cheatham emphasized that it is anticipated that it will take until well into 1957 to complete this integration and before GeorgiaPacific begins to reap any.substantial benefits from the acquisition.
He said that Georgia-Pacific Corporation welcomes the addition of lfammond because redwood commands a more constant price, year in and year out, than almost any other wood, and redwood has a wider application of use than any other. "Combined with our reserves of other prime species, this new resource adds a depth and balance to GeorgiaPacific timber holdings that is expected to be reflected in annual yields and increasing values for the years ahead."
It was pointed out that within one year it is planned to increase the annual rate of harvesting the Hammond timber to approximately 150,000,000 ft. It is believed that the property has a current annual growth of about 100 million feet, but after more of the mature timber is harvested, giving the younger timber more growth potential, the annual growth should increase materially. The overall program will be pursued on a sustained yield basis.
Hammond Lumber Company is one of the largest and best known of the redwood companies. It was

The "typical" retail lumber dealer realized a net profit of $3.47 before taxes on each $100 worth of lumberyard sales during 1955, Dun & Bradstreet showed in its latest cost-of-doing-business survey. initially founded in 1903 and has a highly successful record. Its 1955 sales were about $48,000,000 and its net profit after taxes was in excess of $3,500,000.
In announcing the purchase, Georgia-Pacific officials stated that the acquisition had been financed by long-term (n-25 year),borrowings of $48,500,000 geared to harvesting of the timber, from The Prudential Insdrance Company of America and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; from the use of part of the $15,0@,000 net proceeds of the recent public offering of the company's common stock, and by the issuance of about $15,388,000 of Z0-year subordinated non-convertible debentures to the Hammond stockholders. It was disclosed that upon completion of the financing, Georgia-Pacific had a net working capital position in excess of $4O,000,000, of which more than $20,000,000 is in cash.
fn commenting further, President Cheatham emphasized that the same high quality and standards heretofore practiced by Hammond would be continued; that the products would be merchandised in every state through the existing Hammond outlets and through Georgia-Pacific's national chain of wholesale warehouses as well as for export. Operations will be conducted under the name of a wholly-owned subsidiary, Hammond-California Redwood Co., of which Earl B. Birmingham, formerly president of Hammond Lumber Company, has been elected president.

Ray Sedall was born and raised to the lumber business in Minnesota. He has been identified in sales since graduation from school and has been with Jim Newquist for over five years, handling distribution to retail dealers in this area. He comes from a long line of Minnesota pioneer lumbermen.
H. E. "Brownie" Markstrom, another member of this progressive sales staff, joined the Newquist family over three years ago. He was born and raised in the big timber country in the state of Washington. He gained his experience at the sawmill level prior to entering the sales encl of the lumber distribution business in Southern California.
"We intend to continue to build a hard-hitting sales organization and we represent reliable shippers in the Patrick Lumber Company of Portland, and the Timberlane Lumber Company of Eugene," Jim said. The new suite of offices are open for inspection and dealers are invited to drop by and say "hello," he continued.

Sun-up in Hell
The trouble with hell is that when you get there you have to stay so long. Bob Ingersoll used to tell about a preacher who explained to his congregation how long a man would stay in hell, once he got there. He said: ..Suppose you were standing down by the seashore. As far as you can look in every direction everything is sand. Sand, just sand, and still more sand. Well, now, suppose a little bird flies down and picks up a single tiny grain of sand and flies away with it. Now, a million years later, another little bird flies down and picks up a grain of sand and carries it away. And in another million years another little bird flies down and Jricks up a grain of sand, and flies away with it. Well, brothers and sisters, by the time the little birds carryins away one grain of sand every million years have carried awav all the sand on the seashores in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, well, dearly beloved, by that time it wouldn't be sun-up in hell yet."

Governments ond Mqn
It has been thought a considerable advance towards establishing the principles of freedom to say that government is compact between those who govern and those who are governed; but this cannot be true because it is putting the effect before the cause; for, as man must have existed before governments existed, there necessarily was a time when governments did not exist, and consequently there could originally exist no governors to form such a compact. The fact therefore must be that the individuals themselves, each in his own personal and sovereign right,
entered into a compact with each other to produce a government; and this is the only mode in which governments have a right to arise, and the only principle on which they have a right to exist.-Thomas Paine.

Good Advice for Anyone
William E. Gladstone, The Grand Old Man of England, gave the following advice to a class of students:
"Be assured that every one of you has his place and vocation on this earth, and that it rests with himself to find it. Do not believe those who too lightly say, ,Nothing succeeds like success.' Effort, gentlemen, honest, manful, humble effort, succeeds by its reflected action, esn, ecially in youth, better than success, which indeed too easily and too early gained not seldom serves, like winning the first throw of the dice, to blind and stupefy. Get knowledge- all you can; and the more you get, the more you breathe upon its near€r heights their invigorating air and enjoy the widening views, the more you will know and feel how small is the elevation you have reached in comparison with those immeasurable altitudes that yet remain unscaled. Be thorough in all you do and remember that though ignorance often may be innocent, pretension is always despicable."

All Former M&M Operotions Integroted Into Simpson Logging Go. Nov. I
.Thos. F. Gleed, president of the Simpson Timber Company, announced that plants, sales, and timberlands of the former M&M Wood Working Company in Oregon were placed under management of the'Simpson Logging Company on Nov. 1. Simpson's operating program for the Oregon plants will soon be announced to customers and plant communities by C. H. Bacon, Jr., of Shelton, Wash., vicepresident and general manager of the Simpson Logging Company, Gleed added.
Simpson's purchase of M&M, one of the nation's leading plywood and door manufacturers, was completed in August. Oregon plants located in Portland, Albany, Lyons and Idanha have continued normal operating schedules since the sale. Consolidation of Simpson's production at Shelton and McCleary, Wash., with the M&M production will create a monthly capacity of 32 million feet of plywood, 3/S-inch basis, and 160,000 flush and panel doors.
With its Oregon additions, the Simpson organization founded at Shelton, in Mason county, 61 years ago will be operating plants and timber holdings Coastwide for the first time. The parent company, Simpson Timber Company, maintains executive and central staff offices in Seattle. Operating companies include the Simpson Paper Company at Everett, the Simpson Logging Company at Shelton, and the Simpson Redwood Company at Arcata, Calif.
The Simpson organization now embraces 2O plants and offices employing approximately 6,300 people in a dozen

NRLDA Seeks Chonges in Federql Tox liens qnd Mechcrnic's lien Lqws
During the 84th Congress there was legislation introduced to clarify the status of Federal tax liens as opposed to Mechanic's liens. Although the National Retail Lumber Dealers Assn. urged action on this legislation, the Congress took no action prior to adjournment. The Joint Committee on fnternal Revenue Taxation has asked its stafi to study a number of proposed changes in the tax laws, one of which is the question of the validity of a Federal tax lien as against Mechanic's liens where no notice of such tax lien has been filed.
Below is a letter the NRLDA has sent to Senator Harry F. Byrd, chairman of the Committee, placing National on record in support of Legislation to require the Federal government to file notice of a tax lien, before it can be valid as against the holder of a mechanic's or materialman's lien:
Honorable Harry F. Byrd, Chairman
Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation
Room 1011, House Office Building Washington, D.C.
Dear Senator Byrd:
It has come to my attention that one of the fifteen areas to be covered by a stafi study ,by the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation is the relationship of Federal tax liens to mechanic's liens. The.present law on Federal tax liens has caused a great deal of confusion and resulted in many inequities never intended by the Congress.
At present,'the Federal law provides:
"(a) Invalidity of Lien Without Notice-except as otherwise provided in-subsection (c), the lien imposed by Section 6321 shall not be valid as against any mortgage, pledgee, purchaser or

You will note that holders of mechanic's and materialmen's liens .are not included in the above law.
Thousands of lumber and building material dealers, mechanics and others are daily furnishing material or labor for construction .or home improvements which enhance the value of the property. Under the piesent Federal law, the tax lien attaches to property of the person owing the tax at the time the assessment is received in the Director's office.
A lumber and building materials dealer has no way of ascertaining the existence of a tax lien from public records in the county where the property is located. If he knew of the existence of a valid tax lien he could act accordingly and take the necessary precautionary 'measures before furnishing materials to impiove the property subject to the tax lien.
Under the present law a dealer may furnish materials to enhance the value of the property and later find that the property is sold to satisfy a tax lien, which bars the dealer from recovery for the cost 'of the improvements. In this way the government is being enriched .by the enhancement of the value of the property at the expense of
the dealer who furnished the materials in good faith. This creates a situation where the materialman or mechanic is forced to indirectly pay the tax or part of the tax of the property-owner owing the Federal tax.
We believe that this inequitable situation should be corrected by amending the present tax law by placing mechanics and materialmen in the same category as mortgagees, pledgees, purchasers or judgment creditors in so far as requiring notice of the existence of a tax lien is concerned.
We are confident that the Congress never intended that the tax laws should be used to permit the Federal Government to become unjustly enriched at the expense of an innocent third party acting in good faith in improving the taxpayer's property where the materialman or mechanic could not, by using reasonable diligence in examining the records, learn of an existing tax lien.
We, therefore, respectfully urge the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation to consider an amendment which would provide that a Federal tax lien would not be valid as against the holder of a materialmen's or mechanic's lien unless notice of such tax lien is filed as presently required for mortgagees, pledgees, purchasers and judgment creditors.

Tremendous Fire Nov. 3 Destroys Americqn Hordwood Co. Plqnf
Complete loss of stock was suffered in the four-alarm fire which destroyed the plant of the American Hardwood Co. at 15th and Alameda streets in Los Angeles late November 3. More than LOO firemen fought the flames and stubborn embers into the morning of November 4 as they still spewed smoke into the air 18 hours after the fire started in the yard's office. Three other businesses were wiped out along with the prominent wholesale lumber concern. Two firemen were injured when they jumped off a 1Gft. pile of lumber to escape being crushed when a higher stack started falling on them. A watchman turned in the alarm at 6:45 p.m. after seeing flames in the office and firemen had it more or less contained by 9:15 p.m.
E. M. Taenzer of the firm said that the only things saved in the fire were the company records, which were in a vault. The very day after the fire, however, all of the other local hardwood lumber companies were on the phone to the Taenzers offering them the use of their yards and inventories to fill the American Hardwood Co. orders. Meanwhile, the company was conducting "business as usual" and looking confidently toward early rebuilding.

A two-month tour by three men representing the Japanese plywood industry to observe the distribution and use in the U. S. of Japanese plywood was brought to a successful close the end of October in Louisville, Ky.The committee of three was comprised of M. W. Iwakura, president of the Japan Plyu'ood Exporters Assn.; T. Kuniyoshi, vice-president of the Japan Plywood Manufacturers Assn., and Y. Ohtomo, chairman of the Japan Plywood Trade Promotional Committee.
The tour, which was coordinated by the Imported Hardwood Plywood Association, fnc., was held in the interests of acquainting the Japanese plywood producers with the distribution methods employed in this country, and with the end use of Japanese plywood and lumber products. With evergrowing competition in practically every line of manufacturing, IHPA also stressed the importance of maintaining the present high standard of production in Japan.
Prior to their departure, the three Japanese representatives noted: "We leave with the impression that our mission in coming to the United States in order to study all phases of selling, distributing and promoting Japanese plywood has been highly successful. The knowledge we have gained in going through various factories, and in being able to sit down and discuss subjects of mutual interest with the members of IHPA in different sections of the United States, shall be taken back to Japan and utilized toward the achievement of better trade relations between the United States and Japan."
The tour began in mid-September when the three Japanese

October Figures Show L. A. Headed for New | 956 Building Record
Construction in the city of Los Angeles is certain to set a new record in 1956, General Manager G. E. Morris of the Building and Safety Department predicted earlier this month. City figures for October showed. 5365 permits totaling $37,433,124. City building in the year's first 10 months totaled $404,996,25, compared to a l2-months total last year of $433,455,885.
County Engineer John A. Lambie rvould not make similar forecast for Los Angeles County but did say that construction is mounting rapidly again. County figures for October were 4079 permits at $D,124,834, compared to $22,236,7W in the same month of 1955. $r.

but this is the only chonge
After operating for over a decade as Forest products Sales Company, direct mill lumber wholesalers at 8104 Crenshaw Blvd. in Inglewood, the principals of this firm have decided to change the company name to Clay Lumber Company.

"The foremost reason for this change is quite simple,', says Chuck C1ay, who started the companl, "and stems mostly from the confusion which has resulted from names of others in our business being so similar." It was pointecl out that when the name Forest Products Sales Company was first used it was quite different from most, but now that there are others like it, identification is difficult for both customers a.cl mills.
"We should make it clear who we are, rather than continue to confuse.the issue for all conccrned, including those having colnpany names quite like our own who, rve feel sure, will also benefit by our move," Clay continued.

became effective November 1, the name Forest Products Sales Company will also be retained for a peiod of time to insure proper handling of in-process matters among all the people with whom business is done. This can easily be done, Clay points out, because the structure of the company has changed in no way whatever.
Sometime ago the company was incorporated and total ownership continues to be held among the following directors: Charles E. Clay, president; Walter W. Kuck, vice-president and secretary; Cornell M. Norby, treasurer, and Robert L. Williams, director.
All the above men are actively engaged and spend their full time working for the company. All of them are experienced lumbermen. Walt Kuck spent more than ten years, prior to World War II, in the lumber business in Arizona and California, and held key positions during the war in various defense plants. He came with this company in early 1947.
Cornell Norby, .a native Minnesotan was discharged from the Air Force in 1945, spending the following year in a redwood milling operation in Southern California. He then worked in retail lumber yards at Chino and Claremont, California, before joining Forest Products Sales Company in 1949.
Bob Williams had 14 years' retail lumber experience in west Texas prior to entering the service in 1942. After a threeyear tour of duty in the South Pacific he spent several years with a retail yard in Southern California before starting with Forest Products Sales Company in 1949.
Chuck Clay went directly from the University of Oregon to Timber Products Company at Medford, where he spent ten years with that mill in just about every department. During

these years he also worked closely with an associated company, Western Box Distributors. After a hitch in the Navy as a lieutenant dirring World War II, Clay came to Los Angeles and started Forest Products Sales Company. The co'mpany has gradually grown in size and coverage. In June of this year Chuck was elected a director of National-American Wholesale Lumber Association at the Vancouver, B.C. annual meeting, following Ed Fountain, whose term had expired.
Frances Miller is the girl with the friendly voice answering the phone at Pleasant 3-1141. She has been in this office for four years and capably handles a great variety of duties.
There will be no changes in company policy, plans or personnel, it was made known. All four principals express the hope that the decision to use the name Clay Lumber Company will prove a wise one, and that their supporters-both mills and customers-will find it easier to do business.
It can't be too bad an idea, coming from these four lumbermen whose combined industry experience totals 84 years !

While returning from a mill trip through southern Oregon and northern California, they "merged" with another car (appropriately being driven by a Long-Bell Lumber Co. employee) near Weed, Calif. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but it did require two trucks to terminate the highway merger.

Lumber manufacturers called on the Administration last month to remove the present 4l per cent interest ceiling on government-backed home loans. The action was requested by the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, spokesman for the nation's lumber producers, in a letter to Housing and Home Finance Administrator Albert Cole.
Leo V. Bodine, executive vice-president of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, said flexible interest rates are necessary to increase availability of private mortgage funds and bolster the sagging rate of housing starts.
"Ne$r home construction is one of the principal markets for lumber and the substantial decline in home building this year has caused a drop-off in lumber production," he reported.
Referring to Cole's recent statement that the Executive Branch is not inclined to raise the interest rate on FHAinsured home loans until Congress acts to boost the interest ceiling on VA-guaranteed home mortgages, Bodine continued:
"We recognize the difficulties involved in changing the statutory limitation on the interest rate on VA-guaranteed loans and that such change should occur in unison with FHA. Regretably, this denies immediate attention to a change in interest rates.
"We respectfully suggest, however, that allowing the law of supply and demand to operate in the mortgage money market is the best assurance of a sound national financial structure as well as a sound and adequate housing program. Only in this fashion will the bidder for housing

Bodine also forwarded to Cole the following resolution adopted by the Executive committee of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association:
"The present authorized rate of interest on FHA and VA insured loans is inadequate to attract the mortgage money necessary to malntain a high level of home building throughout the country.
"We urge that steps be taken to assure the availability of,mortgage money by permitting realistic interest rates in the light of existing economic conditions and removing other arbitrary limitations which discourage home buildittg."
Boyd to Open in Uplond in JqnuqrY
Occupying what is reported to be the largest lumberyard area east of Los Angeles, the Boyd Lumber Co. will open for business in Upland, Calif., early in January, according to Charles F. Jenkins, one of the owners. A lGacre site, south of Arrow Highway east of 14th Avenue, is being prepared for the yard's transfer from its former, long-established location in Alhambra. Most of the buildings to be used by the firm were already up last month, with paving of the yard and other facilities to be completed.
"Our facilities in Upland are larger than will be needed at the outset but we are looking to the future development of the Southland and expect all of the area will eventually be in use." Dealer Tenkins said.

Goldwell of Curron Yord Wins Hi-Fi First Prize in Zeesmon tSeriest Contesl
"Luck had nothing to do with it," says Russ Caldwell, purchasing agent for the Frank Curran Lumber Co. in Santa Ana. "My winning score in the Zeesman'World Series' contest was a scientific computation based on an old algebraic equation, modernly known as the biological curve."
Of course, with a system like that, Russ won the first prize-a beautiful Packard-Bell Hi-Fi set with AM and FM radio included. A semi-pro musician himself, the Hi-Fi set is a very welcome addition to the Caldwells, music room. Russ is leader of a group known as the "Old Masters," five men who play for service clubs and other groups around the county. They include accordion, banjo, bull fiddle, guitar and violin, and specialize in oldtime music. This, of course, is a hobby for Russ, who works full time for the Frank Curran Lumber Co. (with time ofi for winning baseball contests, naturally !)
The second-prize winner, Walter W. Kuck, sales manager of Clay Lumber Co. in Inglewood, is having a little difficulty with his prize. It seems he has a L2-year old daughter who likes his clock-radio just as well as he does ! Oh well, maybe it will mean he won't have to get up quite so early to wake the family if they use his prizet.
The third-prize winner, Gwendolyn S. Hunt, was somewhat further afield-she is with North-Robbins Plywood in Seattle. Wonder if they get a chance to use outdoor barbecues in the far north ? We certainly hope so, because it came complete with hood and motorized spit I
Winners of the "ten additional prizes" were E. T. Cryer, Gordon-MacBeath Hardwood, Oakland; J. D. James, Morris Plan Company, San Francisco; L'ester A. Johnson, Jolly Giant Lumber Co., Arcata; N. J. Bowers, Better Homes Industries, Riverside; A. L. Dreger, Simpson Logging Co., Shelton, Wash.; J. L. Johnston, The Robert Dollar Co., San Francisco; E. D. Then there was the little matter of the "Booby Prizet" And we must say Charlie Garcia of Mox Wrecking Co. in Los Angeles was a real good sport about it. By the accompanying picture you will see that he "got the bird" and seemed to enjoy the whole thing!
There is only one question remaining-who enjoyed this contest more-the winners of the prizes, or Norman Zeesman and Jack Baser of Zeesman Plywood Corp., who had the happy duty of presenting the prizes ? Norman Zeesman says there is only one way to find out-hold another contest next year!
NoGol Mill Employmenf Low
Arcata, Calif.-With most of the mills now operating on a 4O-hour week basis-or less, and with very few night shifts still working, the employment picture in Northern California "is not hopeless but it definitely is below any period in the past 10 years," said C. J. Clarke of the Clarke Employment Agency OcL 25.

Dubs Breqk Gourse Record During 97lh Tournqmenl
A new course record, thanks to Ernie Pieper's sparkling 67, was registered at the 97th Dubs, Ltd. tournament, October 19, at the Castlewood Golf and Country Club. Host for an excellent day of golf and low scores was Gran Geisert, genial Dubs president. Excluding Pieper's record shattering round, scores for the day went something like this :
First flight, low net, Fred Ziese (80-11-69) ; second low net, Charlie Larsen (79-8-71); and third low net, George Monnier (80-674). Low gross winner of the tournament was Del Travis who racked ap a 77 on the long, flat 18.
In the second flight, it was Lloyd Swiger on top (88-22-6), with a three-way tie for second low net between Art Bond (88-18-70), Paul Gaboury (89-19-70) and Jim Rossman (86-1G70).
Third Flight winner was Bill Johnson with an 85-23-62 tally. Second low net winner was Charlie Beacom (91-34-63) and third low net position was taken by Bill Ingram (92-28-e).
In the guest flight division, a young fellow ( a golfing great of 30 years ago) came out of golfing retirement to show the older boys how it's done: "Doc" White of Christenson Lumber Company, with an 84-20-64 score card, playing his third game after 30 years away from golf !
Dubs will hold the scheduled 98th tournament on November 16, at the San Francisco Golf Club. Dinner will be at Rickey's Red Chimney in Stonestown. In addition to the

Arrowheod Lumber Co. Mqrks 5 Yeors' Growth; It's o Big Boy Now
The Arrowhead Lumber Co., a bustling baby of the business in Southern California, is celebrating its fifth birthday this year. No words can sum up the policies of this energetic San Bernardino youngster in our industry as well as the letter the officials themselves sent out to their many customers for the occasion:
Gentlemen:
We are celebrating our Fifth Anniversary. It has been a successful five years and we want to thank you for the excellent relationship we have enjoyed. If it were not for fine friends like you, we could not have had the success that you have made possible for us. 'We have great plans and hopes for the future. We will strive in every way to continue our policies of good service and fair dealings and improve them wherever possible. We look forward eagerly to serving you for many, many years ahead.
Yours with appreciation,
ARROWHEAD LUMBER COMPANY
The original three at the start of the wholesale firm on July 1, 1951, were George W. Gibson, his brother C. Dungan Gibson, and R. F. (Bill) Ilelbron, who was in charge of sales. The Gibson boys had come on west from Colorado in 1931 and bought the San Bernardino Lumber Co., a downtown retail yard there, and operated it successfully for N years.
After discussing it with their friends in the sawmill industry in the Northwest, the Gibsons decided to devote the major part of their time to a wholesale and distribution yard operation, and that's how the Arrowhead yard was born. "We feel our growth has been due to our friends," George Gibson says these five years later.

for the Arrowhead firm by a steady growth until its present sales territory today encompasses Southern California from the Tehachapis to San Diego and Mexico, Las Vegas and Clark county, Nevada; Arizona, and Albuquerque, N. M. Sonie growth !
"We enjoy ir ver;/ happy relationship rvith both our customers and competitors," George Gibson declared. A look at that sales area proves it ! Many of the yard's original retail yard accounts five years ago are still its friends and customers.
Arrowhead's first few months of operation were primarily out of the distribution yard. Carload sales were started early the next year, in 1952. "The desert area around us was really 'serviced' in those early years," said Bill Helbron.
Today Arrowhead Lumber Co. makes "scheduled deliveries." This super service includes not only the Pomona Valley but Yuma, Arizona. The firm has several good accounts in old Mexico.
The by-then booming business lvas moved to its present yard and office location on a busy highway, Waterman avenue, in May 1953. By February of this year more property was needed-and added-and the yard now covers 3rf acres and employs three lift trucks.
"Arrowhead Lumber Company is a team and works as a team," George Gibson said. "We attribute our success to teamwork and hard work !" This team of Arrowhead employes are stockholders in the company, too. Besides George and Dungan Gibson and Bill Helbron, the Arrowhead Lumber Co. "team" today consists of Kent Hayden, who came from the W. M. Dary Co. in 1952; and

early this year. After five years the plywood distribution warehouse was formed and located just across the highway for pickup sales. The plywood inventory is maintained direct from Arrowhead's fine mill connections, and the business in this specialty has kept increasing until at this end of its first year Arrowhead is listed as a plywood jobber by the D.F.P.A.
"We feel we have a number of the finest mill connections in the West," Bill Helbron pointed out, and the yard would have to have to keep up the balanced inventory it boasts. Arrowhead Lumber Co. stocks fir, ponderosa and sugar pine, cedar, Engelmann spruce,'redwood, plywood, finish, and pine and fir uppers. It also handles shingles, redwood and fir lath, allied softboards, gypsum products,

"We do a substantial business in squares and longlength dimension through 3?-inch, and carry a complete stock of these items," Helbron added.
And it goes without saying that Arrowhead Lumber Co. also carries a complete stock of goodwill and a full inventory of satisfied dealer customers to have attained its solid reputation and almost reached its majority as it lit the fifth candle on the birthdav cake this summer.

lmproved, Cheoper, Founloin Porloble Lumber Lids
Following up their original idea of a portable Lumber Shed that could be moved to the pile to be protected, the Ed Fountain Lumber Co. has now come up with a much-improved ,cheaper model that can be constructed in almost any lumber yard at nominal cost. The new improved model is cheaper to build and much handier to use, and seems to give just as good protection to Dry lumber as the former model.
In many respects the Fountain Portable Lumber Lids are more flexible and convenient than conventional sheds. The lids are picked up with

shed to the lumber, the big problem of getting the load that always seems to be at the back and the bottom is eliminated.
Fountain Portable Lumber Lids can be constructed from low-grade material that normally collects around lumber yards and can be put together by almost anyone who can use a saw and hammer. The basic element is a low price laminated timber that runs down each side. If you are interested, the Ed Fountain Lumber Co. will be glad to send you particulars.

Neir Slide-q-Fold Inlerior Door ldeq A "Decorolor's Dreqm"
Leading decorators who have previewed the idea say that the new Slidea-Fold interior door principle is likely to become .the "decorator's delight" of. 7957 and years to come because it gives home-owners and new home builders a versatile multi-purpose door style and a far wider range of choice in door materials than ever before.
Slide-a-fold doors of two or more panels of any height, from small cabinet size to complete floor-to-ceiling dividers, for home, office or institutional interior use, may be made from solid wood, plywood, hollow plywood, woven wood strips in wood frames, plantation shutters. West Indies screens Plexiglas, Fiberglas, glass itself, or any fabric that can be framed with wood or other materials. Freedom in color and material selection makes this "decorator dreamstuff."
The door panels may be of any width desired, but standard sizes probably will be in greatest demand. Standard two-panel, Slide-a-Fold doors are sized f.or ljl-f.oot, Z-foot, Zft-foot and 3-foot openings, and four-panel Slide-a-Folds
are sized for openings of 3, 4, 5 and 6 feet.
The beauty of the Slide-a-Fold door is that it provides complete accessibil-
amazingly simple upper and lower endfittings.
The Slide-a-Fold door principle was developed for home-owners, builders, decorators, and institutional applications by the American Screen Products Company, makers of Har-Vey sliding door hardware.
Aside from the cost of materials for door panels, cost of the Slide-a-Fold hardware is astonishingly small. The aluminum track and fittings for a twopanel door covering a lfu-foot opening sell at retail for only $3.98. Slide-aFold Har-Vey hardware for a fourpanel standard 3-foot opening lists at $6.59, and a four-panel door covering a 6-foot opening can be outfitted with Har-Vey Slide-a-Fold hardware for only $9.59.
ity (to closets, for example) without requiring the floor and wall space of the conventional hinged swinging door. Slide-a-Fold doors do not require heavy-duty hinges between door and jamb, nor do they require large conventional knobs and costly intricate locking mechanisms. The rvhole principle is made possible by two-lightweight aluminum tracks and a few
No lubrication is ever required for Har-Vey Slide-a-Fold door hardware, because there is no metal-to-metal contact between the aluminum track overhead or on the floor, and the pre-fixed end bushing fittings and pivots. This is made possible by accurately fitted nylon sleeves over bushings and pivots.
An entire Slide-a-Fold door may be installed in 20 minutes with no tool other than a screwdriver, oncd the panels have been provided by decorator or woodwork supplier. Complete instructions are furnished with each set of Har-Vey Slide-a-Fold Hardware (Type SF 1 for two-panel doors, Type SF 2 for four-panel doors).
