How Lumber Looks National Lumber Trade Barometer showed shipments of 500 reporting mills were 8.6/o below production for the week ended October D; new orders were 16.2/o below and unfilled orders were 36/o of stocks. For the year to date, shipments were 0.4/o above production; new orders were O.7/o below. Compared with the previous week ending Oct. 22, production was 3.5/o, shipments 2.6/o and new orders 6.9/o above.

West Coast Lumbermen's Association reported for 161 operating mills in the week ended October 29: production, 122,671,225 feet; shipments, 108,881,N4 feet (112% under production); orders, 95,3O7,630 leet (22.3/o under production). For the year to date, shipments were 0.3o/o and orders 2.4/a under production.

Western Pine Association reported for 113 milis in the week ended October 22: production,92,643,W feet; shipments, 81,835,000 leet (11.7/o below production); orders, 70,326,000 feet (24.1/o below production). Orders were 4.4/o below the previous week. For the year to date, production was 3,584,977,000, orders were 3,616,864,000, and shipments were 3,623,631,000 feet above the 1954 figure.

California Redwood Association reported for 20 mills during September: production 61,457,ffiO feet; shipments, 60,989,000 feet. Production was 747,0N feet and shipments were 4,260,@0 feet greater tl.ran September 1954, but both were below August 1955. For the first three quarters of this year, production u,as 46,014,@0 feet and shipments were 57,636,000 feet above the first nine months last year.

Orders on hand September 30 were 92,609,W feet, compared to 63,856,000 feet last year.

Douglas Fir Plywood Assn. reported production of lO2,574,0N feet in the week ended October 29 was slightly belorv the previous week b:ut 7.9/o above the like week a year ago. It r,vas higher than new orders for the fifth straight week and 9/o above in the current week, while orders werc l2.l/o below the 1954 period. The unfilled order file was 521,000,000 feet. Zeesmon Awords Handsome Gifrs in 'World Series' Plcly to West Coost Winnerg

Zeesman Plywood Corp., Los Angeles, hosted a luncheon

at the Nikabob restaurant October 22 lor the winners of the recent Zeesman "World Series" contest. The first prize, a General Electric portable, clock-controlled television set, went to Glen Johnson, Johnson Lumber Co., Inc., of Cloverdale.

Prize-winner Johnson said in a letter, "My eight-year-old diabetic son will enjoy this television very much in his room. When he catches a cold he has to stay in bed until he is better, so he will enjoy it very much."

Second prize, a pair of tickets to the Tournament of Roses football game, went to Ralph E. Strayer of the Betts-Sine Lumber Co., Culver City. Third prize, an Emerson transistor radio, was won by Clarence Hendrickson, Foothill Lumber Co., Fontana.

Eleven additional prizes were presented, the ladies receiving attractive gold-colored wallets, and the men handsome Beau Brummel pocket secretaries.

The Booby Drize, a fireman-red folding road flare, went to Bob West, United States Plywood, Los Angeles, who picked some of the highest scores but chose the wrong team to win! l$ames of the additional winners are: Ron Hopkins, Geo. Jim Forgie Succeeds Boris Kufner As Snqrk of los Angeles Hoo-Hoo

At a directors meeting of Los Angeles Hoo-Hoo Cltfi 2 on October 26, Boris Kutner, recently elected president of the fraternal organization, presented his resignation, which was regretfully accepted.

The meeting was called by Kutner at the University Club to explain he was leaving the wood products industry to become sales manager of the tile division for Gladding, McBean & Co., Los Angeles, and that he would not be able to head the lumbermen's club during the 1955-56 fiscal year.

Jim Forgie, vice-president, was immediately named acting president and Snark of the Los Angeles club and assumed the responsibility of scheduling and planning all events, for the ensuing Hoo-Hoo year. Jim will retain his title as vice-president of the largest Hoo-Hoo club in the world until election of officers next September. All other officers and committee chairmanships remain unchanged.

Congressmen Eye Timber Sqles Redding, Calif.-Federal timber sales policies .ivere to be probed here November 14 by a joint congressional commit-

tee with Sen. J. E. Murray (D., Mont.) and Rep. Earl Chudoff (D., Penn.) as co-chairmen. Committee Counsel Robert Redwine said 15 to 20 witnesses would testify at the hearing, and the committee would consider forest access roads, small sales of federal timber, appraisals of the quantity of timber offered in sales, and recreational uses of

national forestland in a fact-finding inquiry toward future legislation to bring about wider and more economic use of timber resources.

Cotchots Open Orongevole Yqrd Roseville, Calif.-Albert and Jerry Catchot, father and son team, have opened the Catchot Lumber Yard in Orangevale, Calif., on llazel avenue near Greenback Lane.

The elder Catchot was in the lumber business in South Carolina before World War II and the family moved to Quincy, Calif., in 1945. Jerry Catchot left the air force in July. The yard will carry everything in the building materials line.

Webb Promofed by Hoyword Yqrds Jim Webb, brancl-r manager of the Homer T. Hayward Lumber Co. in Watsonville, has been promoted to supervisor of that area. Neil Keefer, formerly at the Paso Robles lineyard for Hayward, has been named to Webb's old job.

Predicts $600 Billion in Building in Next Decqde During the next ten years the American economy will pour some $600 billion into building materials and construction labor and services. In the same period, sorlewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000,000 to 13,000,000 new housing units will be built. These predictions were made at the annual fall meeting of the Producers' Council, Inc., in Detroit by Dr. George Cline Smith, economist for F. W. Dodge Corporation. The Council is a national organization of manufacturers of building materials and equipment. Dr. Smith estimated that $450 billion would be spent for new construction in the con.ring decade and that, although adequate figures on the present level of maintenance and repair construction are not available, $150 billion seemed to be a minimum estimate for that category. "This forecast," Dr. Smith said, "is conservative. It does not anticipate any construction boorq but simply a normal growth in line with the expansion of the nation. Most people have difficulty realizing the rnagnitude of that expansion," he said. "In the next ten years, our population will grow enormously. By the most conservative. estimates, the increase will be greater than the present combined populations of Canada and Australia. But growth is not the only important aspect of population. Arnericans are traditionally restless, and they will continue to move about. In recent years, eight or nine million families have moved their homes annually, and about a million and a half of these have moved t,r different states. llome-building should continue at a high rate. Some 300,000 to 400,000 housing units are estimated to be withdrawn from the market each year. Nonfarm household formations should begin to rise substantially after 1960. While many other factors influence housing demand, the pressure of these household formations combined with the disappearance of existing housing through demolition, destruction, and conversion should provide a basic annual market for 1,200,000 to 1,300,000 housing units a year during the decade. Obviously, this forecast does not envision a major war or depression during the decade, because there seems to be little basis for expecting either. On the other hand, it does not assume a runaway boom, but actually would allow leeway for a mild recession during one or two of the ten years."

Mutuql Plywood Elects Officers

Eureka, Calif.-Officers and directors were elected recently at the annual meeting of the Mutual Plywood Company. C. W. Whisnant was re-elected president, Harry Holt, vice-president; George Johnson, secretary-treasurer, and S. R. Barry, assistant secretary. The annual report sl-rowed Mutual sold more than 100,@0,000 feet of plywood last year to become the second largest manufacturer in the U. S. The company has purchased 70,000,000 BF of timber to insure future operations.

Orange, Calif.-An all-time building record was set here in September with permit valuation ol $1.,9'44,445 for the month. The previous record of $1,607,916 was set last February.

Edgar Froover in the opening paragraph of this piece, the nervly elected president of the American Legion, in his acceptance speech before the recent annual convention in Miami, said: "The threat of Communism comes not alone from Communist party members. The more immediate danger comes from

S. withdrawal from the United Nations, the defenders of UN heard that organization both criticized and condemned as having caused "irreparable harm to our republic and endangered our fundamental rights." x * * Years ago someone asked what was the difference between a Communist and a Nazi. Roundup General Chairman Hugh Pessner stated that the 9 Club owed a special vote of thanks to Jack Dollar, Bill McCubbin and Barney Bates, who all did a splendid job of pre-Roundup publicity work.

The 9th annual ltounclup day (and nite) started off at ll:29 a.m. at the Peninsula Golf Club. Frecl Ziese was in charge of the tournament, ably assisted lty 13ob Bonner.

Some 65 golfers played the lvell-organized tournament, $.hich again featured the San Francisco Hoo-Hoo Club Perpetual -Irophy.

Customers Were Waiting at 10:00 a.m.

Dee Caspary's advance planning for the shritt. n'as so u,ell handled that a line of ckr-it-yourselfers u'as u'aiting at 1O a.rn. to get into the st()re on the first day of the shot,, rvhich lan till 5 p.m. both days. They san' product-app1ication demonstrations by '{0 hand-picked manufacturers' representatives, u'ho furnished the samples, sour-enirs aucl door prizes as n'ell as giving useful information and advice to the thousancls <;f hcimeorvners in attendance.

There were exhibitions of wood finishing, insulation, etc., by the suppliers who included Johns-Manville, Celotex, Filon, Thompson Glass, Black & Decker and United States Plywood.

In its daily operations, outside of special customers events such as the annual do-it-yourself shorvs, the Atlarrtic Lrrr"nber Co. lias to have a personnel compieureut ol 32 regttlar employes. Mr. Caspary, Sr., is president of the colxl)a11y and his rvife, Emma T. Caspary, is vice-president. Another

son, Tom Caspary, was in the yard until September in charge of hardware and mechanical equipment but is now in another business for himself. O. G. Oliver heads the accounting department.

As general manager, D. T. Caspary, Jr., is successfully carrying on the many fine ideas and sultstantial background instilled in him early by his father. His management reflects the advanced thinking of the successful retail lumberman and building materials dealer in these times.

Such modern . gimmicks in retail lumbering as Serveyourself, women in the lumberyard, Sunday operations, etc.. are all part of today's operation.

"I regard the main competition of the lumberyard today as TV, automobiles and swimming pools, but you needn't worry about them if your thinking is tuned right," says Dee Caspary.

"I leave every man to his orvn department in the store; I learned that from the Navy," added the general manager.

Young Caspary has installed a tote board for prices prominently posted in the store, and a huge public address system will call an employee to the phone, deliver a message to a customer, or make announcements of general interest when the store is full of customers (as it generally is!).

Women Customers in the Yard "I have the girls who work for us take a periodical count of the women customers who are coming into the lumberyard personally to do their 'shopping' these days, and we have found that there has been an increase in the numlter

of them every recent vear, so don't sell r,vomen in the lumberyard short," the junior Caspary pointed out.

The Caspary men have recently bought up some houses and stores adjoining their Atlantic boulevard yard on the north. Besides providing an additional rental income for the yard, it rvill afford them parking for 30-50 more cars. fn the additional yard space also provided, they are moving the rental units to the front display; this, incidentally, has proved a profitable sideline worthv of a later, separate story.

The Sunday operation at the Atlantic Lumber Co. is also a separate story but it should be noted here that this yard on Sundays accomplishes a business equaling 7 5o/o of its Saturday volume with a full crew, although it uses only one-third of the crew of employes on Sundays. Atlantic is open only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, which many operators in busy Southern California regard as a "must" business day.

On the subject of Self-service in the lumberyards, Dee Caspary believes it rather starts itself. "It either ltecomes or doesn't become part of the operation," he stated. "If it comes, it comes gradually; here it started with the contractor customers serving themselves and just grew from there."

The Atlantic Lumber Company has been operating in the suburban Los Angeles area since D. T. Caspary, Sr., set up business Feb. 16, l9D. The remodeled store and yard were opened June 1, 1951, in an all-out merchandising effort

The yard maintains a carpenter rvho rvorks on his own out of the u.arehouse to install products if rvished, and the no-charge milling service is available to cttstomers. Product displays at the yard quote prices u'hich rvould show the cost of a typical room finished rvith the materials being contemplated.

Many merchandising gimmicks are used to bolster the rvalk-in trade; for instance, a monthly prize drarving has been held in which the custotner needed only sign the register each month. Music is played for shoppers about 13 out o{ every 15 minutes. A large display table holds a supply of comic books rvhere the kids can be parked while the folks browse for building materiais, and the Casparys believe a Coke machine is a "must" in the retail store.

The Motor Ccrr in Our Economy Every person who can add two and two and come up with a total of four, realizes that this terrifically high economy that prevails in the U. S. today depends on everything staying in high altitudes. Wages, and salaries, and profits, and spending must remain higher than any cat's back ever was, in order that the Government may have the tax income

that can only come from a mountainous tide of business and finance, and thus be able to meet such expenses as this or any other Government has never known before.

For which reason every person needs to know about some of the things that are doing most to make and keep this mountainous economy at present levels. And one of the most important things on which we now depend for this tremendous tide of business prosperity is the motor vehicle industry. This mighty force reaches out into every nook and corner of our national operations, and affects every human being who lives in America. If a vote of thanks is in order from the American people for this present mighty tide of business prosperity, certainly the motor vehicle industry is entitled to such a vote.

According to a statistical resume which has been released by the Automobile Manufacturers Association, this is the giant industry on whose shoulders the business world largely rests. The United States produces and owns 73 percent of the world's passenger cars; there are 61 million registered motor vehicles in this country; we have 72 million licensed drivers; and they are driving something like 560 billion miles a year. Taxes account for 24 cents out of

every dollar spent in buying an automobile, and special taxes paid by U. S. motorists total more than 6 billion dollars annually. The industry is still growing, and it is estimated by the experts that registrations will increase 33 percent in the next 10 years. That would necessitate the building of more than 100 billion dollars worth of roads in that decade, to keep traffic moving.

It would be most interesting to know how many people are employed directly or indirectly in the operations of the motor car industry. The materials that go into these multi-millions of cars we are manufacturing come from all parts of the nation, and the world. The producers of these materials alone are a vast army. Then a multitude of people are directly employed in manufacturing the vehicles, cars, trucks, etc. Then additional armies of people are engaged in selling, servicing, repairing, insuring, and operating these vehicles. And still mightier armies of workers produce, and refine, and distribute, and sell, and service the motor fuels a.nd motor oils that are necessary before a motor can turn over. Most of the products of our great oil industry are consumed by the motor vehicle industry, and millions of people are engaged in the oil industry itself.

If you would search the record you might dig up scores of other activities that employ great numbers of people directly or indirectly in the motor vehicle industry. For this high tide of American economy is based on rubber tires.

So, as we watch this highly painted automobile industry

Home Builders Plqn lorger Gonvention A major expansion of its annual convention ancl exposition, to be lreld in Chicago January 22-26, is announced by the National Association of llorne Builders. The Chicago Coliseum will add some 200 extra exhibit spaces and a meeting hall accon.unodating 2,500 persons to the show's facilities, which also occupy all available meetir.rg rooms and exhibit space in the Conrad Hilton and Sherrnan hotels. The expansion will make it possible to provide exhibit space for a greatly increased number of manufacturers of building materials and home equipment.

Exhibit highlights will include new displays of light construction equipment ancl power tools. Addition of the Coliseum facilities will make it possible to increase the number of convention meetings-panel discussions, general sessions, clinics, clernonstrations and other events-to be conducted at all three convention centers.

Emphasis throughout the five-day meeting will be on financial problems, merchandising ancl building research. Action programs and how-to-do-it demonstrations will also be stressed.

The increased number of activities and the exposition of building materials and home equipment are expected to attract a record attendance of builders, contractors, architects, engineers,

building supply dealers and others connected with home building.

He explained a whole block of homes would be painted

to demonstrate what can be accomplished by paint alone in improving a declining neighborhood.

Jol-rn R. Doscher, executive director of Operation Home Improvement, told about plans for starting that program

early in 1956 rvith the slogan : "'56 is the Year to Fix Your Flome." He urged dealers to cooperate br- using the Operation Home Improvement seal in their arlvertising and promotional materials and described OHI a:; a program that will hand extra sales volume on a sih-er platter to every lumber dealer who ties in.

Doscher added that full dealer cooperation u-ould enable manufacturers to urge the public in their adlertising to "See the lumber dealer who displays this seal; he \yants to help ,v*ou improve vour home."

Norman Mason, commissioner of FHA and a fornrer president of NRLDA, said that the problem of irnproving America's housing is being attacked on all fronts norn' that modernization of homes is receiving strong attenti,n.

With respect to credit terms, he said that the recent restrictions had been care{ully considered and that the tightening r.vas not a matter of putting on the brakes l:lut rather of taking the foot off the accelerator. He said that FHA watches carefully for signs of overbuilding and is prepared to act when and as needed. He expressed the opinion that mortgage funds will be ample and can be piped to any place where required.

Mr. Mason added that FHA is studying three problems: (1) possible revision of Minimum Property Requirements so as to make them more readable and give credit for quality building, (2) how to provide better housing for senior citizens, and (3) how to make FHA work better for smaller builders and individuals.

Another past president, Henry J. Munnerlyn. reported on his work as an advisor to the Voluntary F{ome NIortgage Credit Committee and explained that to date VHNfCC has arranged for 4700loans totalling $4,000,000 in outlying areas and to minority groups. He said the program is r,vorking well but that relatively few lumber dealers have been seeking its assistance.

John Alexander, Jr., chairman of the Committee on I-abor Relations, restated the committee's recommendation that NRLDA concern itself with all major labor legislation, not just that directed specifically to the retail lumber industry, and urged dealers to r,'i'ork closely r,vith other employers in their communities.

Dealers Will Need Aid on Merchandising The chairman of NRLDA's Committee on Nlerchandising and Public Relations, Russell W. Nowels, raised the question of horv far the association should go in providing merchandising assistance to its members. He pointed out that the trend toward store merchandising raises large ne'iv problems on which dealers will need help and guidance.

Erectecl in recorcl time by McDonald Engineering Company of San Francisco, the silos will more than double the company's storage capacity for finishecl cement.

The additional storage capacity permits the accumulation of

celxent inventories during the rainy season.

The silos are the first rnajor unit of a $4,000,000 expansion program rvhich will include installation of a fifth kiln and related equipment at the San Andreas plant.

Judd Greenrnan (left) has been in lurnber manufacturing operations in Colorado, New Mexico, \Vashington and Oregon for more than 50 years. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, October 12, 1885, Greenman joined the Burns-Biggs Lurnber Companv at Edith, Colorado, in June 190,1 and then lvas sent to the same company's operations at El Vado, New X{exico, where he remained until December i910. He carne west in January i911 to Union Mills, Washington, u'here he was employed by the Union I-urnber & Shingle Con-rpany until Nlarch, 1925, at whicl-r time he joined the Oregon-American Lurnber Corporation in Vernonia, as superintendent. Ten 1'ears later he was electecl vice-presiclent ancl, in 1947, becan.re president of the cor-r.rpany.

When Long-Rell purchased tl.re controlling interest in the Oregon-American Lun.rber Corporation on N{ay 29, 1953, Greenman became the general manager of the property wl-rich has since been knor,r.n as the Vernor.ria Division.

In addition to his cluties and responsibilities in \rernonia,

Greenman's interests l.rave extended to the conservation at.rcl protection of the forests and the overall welfare of logging and lumber mannfacturing. He is a director in the N.W. Ore-

gon Forest Protective Association. A mer.nber of the \\'est Coast Bureau of Lurnber Grades and Inspection for almost 30 years, he is also a trustee of Columbia llasin Loggers :rtrcl Columbia Rasin Sawmills as well as of the Lltmbermen's Industrial Relations Committee, Inc. Active in the \\-est Coast Lumbermen's Association, he has been treasurer, 1942-1945; vice-president for Oregon from 1946 through 1953, clistrict clirector, 1953 ; ex-offrcio director and West Coast Lurlrbermen's Association representative on the National Lttmber Manufacturers Association Board for 1954.

In the NLMA, Mr. Greenman was fronr 1951 to 1953 a member-at-large of the board of directors. For i95,t, he rvas elected first vice-president, ex-offrcio director and a member of the executive committee. In November 1954 he l'as named president for 1955.

The Greenmans will reside at 9911 S.\\r. Lynwood Terrace, Portland, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Greenman have a son, Hale, in Medford, Oregon, and a daughter, N'Irs. Charles Burrorv, living in Portland.

As a result of hearing the ninutes of the Redrvood Seasoning Association, there r,vas held a discussion in regard to salting. It seems the SCLSA group had experienced the same results as the group up there.

Charlie Lakeman of E. J. Stanton & Son asked if anyone had had any experience '"vith Cedro, a Spanish Cedar from Guatemala. He had put some o{ it through three di1{erent charges, but the stock was still wet at the core. Charlie Beckman, Beckman Lurnber Service, expressed his opinion that it seemed as though it rvere Pachote, rl'hich is almost impossible to dry. The only way in rvhich Pachote may be dried is to boil it out with high humiditv and, if using a 4/4, it r,r,ill take from three to four tveeks. Also, it .n'as stated that even when this is done, during machining it may be observed that everywhere a sticker has been placed, "there rvere wet spots in the wood.

The question as to what various operators had clone u,.ith Douglas Fir during the hot weather was brought up. All seemed to have had similar experiences-that it popped open regardless of what they had done.

The Chart outlines in a step-by-step manner, all the phases of the building trades

'lhe chart covers Blueprint Reading, Carpentry, Masonry, Ilouse Planning, Remodeling, Carpentry Mathematics and Estirnating for the Building Trades. New Report on Fire-domoged Trees

Berkeley, Caiif.-.\ prelimir-rary report on hor,v to juclge if fire-danraged trees are likely to survive u'as released October l3 by the California Forest and Range Experiment Station of the U. S. Forest Service as an aid to foresters and timber owners in the state. It outlines n.rajor results from a study jrrst completed by Dr. Willis W. Wagener, forest patl.rologist on the station staff. An earlier report, by Dr. James W. Kimmey, described the time available for salvage of trees killed outright by fire. The report states that mairy trees n'hich appear to be badly injured are able to survive.

However, lvhen a strike is called the sal:rries of the union <lfficials continue ancl their income does not stop-thus making it a very profitable venture to call strikes, supposedly for the benefit of the men. . . . the rvriter's suggestion u.ould be that if the men or rvorkers rvould lvake up to the fact that the only ones lvho profit through the medium of a strike against indnstry are the labor leaders rvhose incomes do not stop, and, if the men or rvorkers rvould insist that the labor leaders' incomes stop at the same time that theirs did, it is my firm belief that the country rvould sull'er feu'er strikes.

At the present time, the truck drivers of the sand and rock industrv have been called out on strike by their unior.r.

Management has granted pay raises but the question of ir pension plan is holding up any settlement. The Teamsters Union is playing for big stakes for, if the pension plan is approved here, it Nould then spread natior.rrvide-rvith approximately 300 million dollars income to the union ; this rvithout supervision or any accounting.

The local strike is in its fifth rveek and is affecting thousands of people in addition to those on strike. It can be safely estimated there are in excess of 700,000 people, as well as hundreds of allied industries, practically doing nothing while someone gloats over anticipation of the spoils to

America's Western Pine lumber resources-already in an excellent state of 'lvise use and grorvth on nearly 6,000,000 acres of Western Pine Tree Farms-added new depth July 30 in a record-breaking Tree Farm dedication held near Potlatch, Idaho. The certification of 116 new Tree Farm units broke the previous high of 106 for the number of units to be certified at one time in the United States set last year at Kamiah, Idaho, uncler the auspices of the Kamiah Grange. Approximately 55,000 acres of forest lands-much on forests contained tvithin farms and ranches in the area-lvere brought under the Tree Farm banner.

Fred Landenberger, field representative for the California Redwood Association and the Redu'ood Region Conservation Council at Eureka, has been named assistant secretary of the Redrvood Region Logging Conference, reports Conference President Henry K. Trobitz of Klamath. Landenberger assumed the part-time duties September 1 as assistant to Logging Conference SecretaryManager Emanuel Fritz, rvho is anticipating retirement.

The RRLC is an entirely separate organization from the CRA or RRCC. Fritz said, but the purposes are so closely related that the appointment shouid be mutually beneficial.

The purposes of the Logging Cor.rference, Fritz outlined, are largely irr.rprovment of loggiug and forest utilization practices in the redrvood and Douglas fir forests of northrvestern California. The principal medium is the annual conference and logging equipment sholr held in May. The Conference rvas founcled in 1935 by Fritz as the Iledrvood Logging Conference ; in 1919 it u'as reorganized to include the Douglas fir interests and assrrmed its present name rvitl-r Waldron Hyatt of Haurmond Lumber Company as first president. Attendance has grorvn from 5O to more than 600.

The next Redu-ood Region Logging Confcreuce will be helcl at Ukiah May 25 and 26, 1956. Prepitrations are already ttnderway for the program and eqnipment shorv.

Current officers of the Conference are Henry K. Trobitz.

Dickerman, executive director of the National Association of Home Builders. "This report should bc read by all Americans as a record of outstanding public service by an agency that has been assigned one of the most difficult and essential tasks ever undertaken by our Government," Dickermah said in connection lvith the release of the VA's Decennial Report on the loan guaranty program rvhich has been in operation since 1944.

The report contained the prediction that an estimated additional three million veterans of World \\rar II and the Korean War rvill obtain GI loans before their respective programs end. The World War II program ends on July 25, 1957:- Korea veterans have a later time.

"The GI loan program has enabled approximately 3.5 million veterans to obtain homes and thousands of others to purchase farms and business," Dickerman said. I{e noted that more than 92/o of the veterans applying for GI loans do so to acquire homes and said that if this rate continues, it r,vill provide a market perhaps for 3 million homes before the programs end. He also called attention to the fact that VA losses have been less than one-half of one percent of its primary mortgage home loans.

This is a story about a plucky family who went to Southern California about ten years ago and settled in the dairy and truck farming district near Artesia. That is the present site, surrounded by cows, chickens alld farms, u'here the plant of one of the most progressi\-e and fastest-grorving door nlanufacturing concerns is locatecl.

It rvas back in 1930 that trfanny Toraya, president of the Artesia l)oor Co., Inc., first came t() "sunny California." For se\reral years he \\'orked in the r,voodrvorking industry but in time becanle lonesome for his family, n'ho were all in Nerv York and Spain. Early in 1940 he returned east to spread the u'ord to his relatir.es of the oppor-

tunity that existed in the Golden State.

NIanny gathered the family together, explainecl about the tremendous grou'th that u'as then getting underrvay, and

exactly what he anticipated rvould happen rvhen people started migrating ri'estx,ard. During \\rorld War II all <rf his predictions came trlte, so late in 7916 the clan headed 'n'est and settleti in the midrlle of a con- pastrlre.

Immecliately upon arrival in Artesia (it had lteen 11etermined in advancc tliey l.ould scttle in this particular area). this pioneering group openecl zr restaurant and all pitched in to feed Artesians and, in so doing, feed thenrselves. Belier-e it or not, this rr,as the first step tou'ard

Following the estaltlishment of the restarlrant the men folk left the operation of the enterprise to the r,ornen folk of the farnily ancl started an active se:Irch for a loca-

tion to launch their door operation. This rvas not too easy because they n'ere definitelv in tl're center of an agricultural district.

What happened then started the trend toward building industrial plants in the outlying areas of Los Angeles county. They acquired a three-acre tract in the middle of a truck patch, erected their modest building, searched for the very best in equipment, and they were in the door business.

Today this r.nodern plant occrlllies a manufacturing area of 50,000 sqrlare feet, has just completecl a neu- \\'arehorlse to carry a full inventorv of doors for immediate delivery, has 45 units of procluction equipnrent and or'er 55 employes to turn out in exces.i of l2W doors Per shift, and it takes six rrnits of mobile erluipn-rent to keep materials and finished products moving irito and out of the plant.

In just eight years this familv has accoutplishecl something that rvould gcnerally take a lifetirrre. In 1947, rvhen the door business l'ts u'ell underu'ar., the girls disposed of the cafe and joined the manufacturing c()ncern. They presently nln the office ancl general accounting departrnent.

Raymond Haven Thayer, 72, retired secretary-treasurer of E. K. Wood Lumber Company, San Francisco, died October 19 at San Rafael General Hospital after a twoweek illness. He was the son of the late Clarence Allen Thayers, pioneer San Rafael residents. He leaves his wife, Laura, of the home at 86 Culloden Park, San Rafael, and three sisters. Services were held at the First Presbyterian church, where Mr. Thayer had been president of the trustees for the past 28 years.

Clement W. Nelson, Jr.

Clement W. Nelson, Jr., 46, lumber mill owner, died October 31 of a heart attack at Sierra Madre Lodge, Pasadena. Funeral services were conducted in Van Nuys and the body sent to St. Louis, Mo., where he was born, for burial. Mr. Nelson was a California resident 20 years and maintained his home in Sherman Oaks. He was a member of the Jonathan Club, Shrine, Masons and Knights Templar, and of the Sons of the Revolution. He leaves his wife and a daughter.

Jesse E. Harvey, 66, pioneer in the rock and gravel business in the Los Angeles area, where he started in l9O7 and continued 40 years, died there October 19 . . . Marcus

D. Fitzsimmons, 63, Southland real estate leader and 1951 president of the Los Angeles Realty Board, died October 17. In 1953 he was arvarded a trophy as outstanding realtor Everett Thurman, 43, head grader at the of the year .

Pacific Coast Company mill at Willits, died early last month . . . Mrs. George Allen, wife of the superintendent of Holmes-Eureka logging operations in southern Humboldt, died there early last month . . . Frank B. Long, 53, master mechanic for Southwest Lumber Mills, Flagstaff, Ariz., died October 11 at a hospital in Cottonn'ood. He was an Alabaman and had worked in the sarvmill industry most of his life, in Flagstafi since 1944 after prior work at Southwest's McNary, Ariz., operations . . . William J. Larsen, 74, president of the Larsen Construction Co., Los Angeles, died at a rest home in Santa Monica November 1 after a short illness. Mr. Larsen was responsible for much of the development-promotion of the Wilshire-Robertson business area and widely known as a real estate developer in the Culver City, Inglewood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and West Los Angeles areas. lle leaves his son, Lt.Commdr. Willard J. Larsen, and a grandson.
