TARGET YOUR EFFORTS...SAVE MONEY AND MANPOWER

Fountain Bull's-Eye ServiceThere are many tasks you can lay-off on us which would require additional staff or working everyone in your organization to a frazzle if you go it alone. Take buying lumber for instance. You contact us... just one phone call, and we can give you a rundown on availabilityat-leading mills in the best production areas. On top of this, the item you want may be in transit or in our Los Angeles distribution yard. Whether it's a mountain of decking or a mole-hill of pecky cedar, we can supply the answers, fast/

Once ordered, we do all the scheduling and checking if it's coming from the mill. We pay your freight bill so your bookkeeping department doesn't get all tied-up with diversion, dunnage and demurrage. You are billed for freight and lumber at the same time, so you don't have to put out money to the railroad before you get the product. And, everyone knows that a few days delay in paying any bill is money in the bank!

Then, there's the matter of technical services. we have people who are specialists in all phases of construction involving lumber, laminated timbers, decking and paneling... plus, they are active on building code committees to increase the use of lumber. Add to this the fact that you can save up Io 2"/" per month by letting us control your inventory and you have a service which can hardly be ignored.

Next time you need decking, dimension lumber, laminated timbers, pecky cedar or any standard or special product in West coast softwoods. call Fountain first!

New Source of Business

A LL TOO OFTEN in the past months we have fa heard the all too real complaint that business is ofi, down, decreasing, or just plain lousy. In most cases the lament {or lost business is a reflection of the sad state of the housing industry.

On a national basis, single family starts are expected to slip four to six percent below last year. And last year's final tally was below what had been anticipated. Treasury Secretary Henry Fowler has been quoted as referring to housing as one o{ the areas in the generally booming U.S. economy that is "sputtering."

Next year, if the forecaster's focus on the crystal ball is good, the housing industry will start to pick up as new federal laws on housing and finance plus more marriages boost the home buying urge.

But for the present, the lumber and building material dealer and wholesaler must face the fact that he has, in effect, lost a major market and hence must look elsewhere for this year's business.

An easy thing to propose, but tough to put into practice, you say? We couldn't agree with you more. But we'll bet that the chances are good that in your town there is just such a market and that you, like many others, have overlooked it. We speak of the new urban renewal market that has been created in the last two years by new laws passed by federal, state and city governments.

This new market has an estimateil potential of ; $50 billion. Yes-billion, and that puts it at twice the size of the present market for housing and hence well worth the efiort. And no less an authority than George V. Stein, National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association first vice president, has stated that "there appears to be little risk involved."

Under the Housing Act of 1965 additional lowcost financing for remodeling, repair and rebuilding of both commercial and residential properties has been added to previous laws. The Housing Act of 1964 (under section 312) provides grants and three percent loans and the act is the vehicle for the dis-

tribution oI some $100 million durins the next four years. Both laws will work in sectio'ns defined by the cities involved as urban renewal areas.

According to NLBMDA, the way to get on the trail of all the business is: locate the Local Public Agency (LPA) in your town that has jurisdiction over urban renewal. As they take manv forms. i.e.. city departments, separate agencies anh what have you, the easiest way would be to first contact a regional office of the Housing and Home Finance Agency-now a part of the new Department of Housing. For Arizona, California, Nevada, southern ldaho, Utah and Wyoming the office is at 450 Golden Gate Ave., P. O. Box 36003, San Francisco, Calif. 94102. For the rest of the West: 909 First Ave., Seattle, Washington 98104.

When you locate your LPA, get in touch with the executive director and find out from him the rules of the game. He will have the necessary information on your city's plans and projects and will be able to tell you the tactics to get the big ticket sales.

If your market area has no present plan for federally-assisted urban renewal it is not outside the scope of probability that you could be the generating {orce for getting one started. Remember this: the government has got all that money to be given, granted and loaned and if you don't get it someone else will. Get in touch with other businessmen and sketch out a plan and then contact city officials. There is too much at stake to let this one slip by for want oI efiort.

These federally-subsidized rehabilitation plans appear to many to be the key to profits that have been lost this year. We agree and join them in urging you to investigate this new business source.

qOMETHING NEW for wholesalers gets under- *"y in late November, early December. The National-American Wholesale Lumber Association will present a program to seven difierent regional dinner meelings of the Lumber Merchants Association. (See page 57 lor d,etails.)

'W'e shall follow closely, for if successful, this is a project that could be developed on a national basis for the good of the cause. Another example of the continuing trend of cooperation between ihe various segments of the forest products industry.

Successful Dealer-Builder Predicts

Big Rise in Component Construction

II-UBBARD & JOHNSON Lumber Co., ll one of California's laigest lumber merchants, has just celebrated its 20th anniversary by being named a northern California architectural specialty dealer for Weyerhaeuser Company laminated wood products.

ooOur firm has made many advances over the years," comments Wesley otBud" Hub. bard, "but we look upon the Weyerhaeuser laminated products tie-up as perhaps the most important. It means a new concept in selling by us, and we believe it will be a major factor in our future growth in the construction industry."

Hubbard envisions a "tremendous swing" to component construction where dealers will provide insulated wall panels in long lengths to contractors who will merely cut door and window openings and tilt them into place. Glulams will be placed in position and roofing panels lowered to them to enclose the structure.

"It's the only answer to today's labor factoro" says Hubbard, toand we are convinced that builders will demand this type of material in the future."

Hubbard predicted that during the years ahead the sale of Weyerhaeuser products by H & J will increase tremendously. In terms of dollar sales" it will run from $5 to $10 million.

Hubbard, like many other construction leaders, predicts the reduction of onsite labor to ,the point where a home will go up in two or three days, thanks to panelized floors, walls, roofs, glulams, prefinished panels and structurally-rated framing lumber. "It will still retain flexibility of design, but considerable time and waste will be eliminated."

"'We know that we will have to rely more heavily on automated concepts at the mill level if we are to continue as ma-

jorifactors in the distribution phase of the construction industry," explains Hubbard, whose family has been dealing in lumber since the 1880's.

"The market for glulam members has yet to be scratched," he commented, otand its future for lumber dealers is unlimited. With local inventories on hand. architects can more easily specify these products for fast delivery and installation."

In order to promote the use of laminated members in all types of construction, Hubbard & Johnson has formed a subsidiary organization-Hubbard & Johnson Laminated Structures, fnc.to both sell and erect beams and decking.

"This organization enables us to combine technolog'y, materials and labor in a single package and sell glulams as 'in-place items' throughout northern California," explains Carl J. Henoch, president of the subsidiary. o'We will emphasize the use of structural wood systems and function as I sub-contractor," he added.

Representative of the "systems" jobs already undertaken by the firm is the San Lorenzo Park Shopping Center in Santa Cruz, a complex occupying a nine-acre site in the downtown area.

The first two buildings now under construction have a combined square footage of ,X4,000 feet and approximately 95,000 bd. ft. of Weyerhaeuser glulams in 18 different dimensions.

Hubbard & Johnson Lumber Co. was formed in 1945 when Bud Hubbard and Chet Johnson left McElroy Lumber Co. and opened a small yard in Los Gatos. In 1958, the firm moved to EI Camino Real in Mountain View for retail business and moved its wholesale operation to the Port of Redwood City where it operates today.

The firm now has 100 employeeso and the Laminated Structures subsidiary has 10 employeesquite a growth for just 20 years, but Bud Hubbard and Chet Johnson are counting on even bigger and better growth in the immediate future!

OI|-SIIE HAllllllt{G of glulam beams was accomplished with a fork lift op erated by Gordon Cady, H&J's field superintendent. ERtGTl0l{ CREW drilled holes and installed hardware at the job site. The glulams were then lifted into place and secured with bolts. +fiCTORY-WRAPPEO laminated beams were installed at the San Lorenzo Park shopping center by Hubbard & Johnson. Some 225 glulams totaling approximately 95,000 bd. ft. of lumber were used. CARI J. HEil0CH (center), president of Hubbard & Joftnson Laminated Structures, Inc., checks slulam member details with his sales minager Al -Arens (right) and L. E. Boyd, Weyerhaeuser- architectural market representative. ':. ffi PIACEilEIIT of Weyerhaeuser laninated beams atop steel columns was done with a fork lift truck and scaffolding.

Hoo-Hoo's Annual Convention is a Smash Success

TfHERE'S S0illETHl\C about a Hoor Hoo convention that warms thc cockles of everyone's heart. We think maybe it's because nobody is selling anybody anything (Well, hardly anything). And when one combine-. this atmosphere of friendly fraternalism with the Salt River Valley Club ft72, the result is pretty hard to beat.

'Wc arrived under cover of darkness on Friday evening, and instead of kicking the gon€{ on arrival as usual, went quietly to bed in preparation {or the important meeting on Saturday.

Beginning with a rump group in exr', utive v.p. Bob Holder's room at ten a.m. through to about six p.m., a few dedicated

The Fore.st Products Promotion Cortncil (rcported on last month ) was born by absorbing the Hoo-Hoo Advisory Committee into the r.ren' organization, while at thc same time letting the National Wood Council die a natural death.

Minton's Newesf Refoi/ Outlet

ls Modern Mqrketing of its Besf

-LYr vued its new Saratoga branch operation with a rousing three-day grand opening October l-3, marking another step {orward for the 54 year.old firm. based in Mountain View. Calif.

The new branch operation located at 1505 Saratoga-Sunnylal" Road tHighway 9) is patterned after Minton's Mountain Vierv "Pink Room" (CLM, May, 1964), a departure from the usual retail building material concept.

Like its "Pink Room" at Mountain View, Minton's new two-acre branch is 100/6 retail, and completely self-service. The usual garden supplies. power tools and heavy hardware departments are missing. Instead, the branch {eatures greatly expanded inventories of hardwood and so{twood plvwoods. mouldings and trim. floo. and ""il- ing tiles. packaged and ornamental hard-

ware, paints and paint supplies, garden redwood and kiln dried construction lumber.

The "Lumberteria" is open seven days a week and is adequately staffed by just three employees and part time weekend help because of its sel{.scrvice nature. Everythins is made doubly simple for the do-it-yoursel-f shopper with all departments plainly marked, all inventory priced, with carts available for large and small purchases. The larger shopping carts will easily hold several sheets ol 4'x8' plywood-enough material, in fact. to panel and finish an entire room-and they can be wheeled direcdy

Portable check-out stand is pressed into service during busy periods.

ENIRAT{CE of showroom at Minton's, A "lumberteria" in the true sense, the store carries extensive inveniories of hardwood and softwood plywoods, mouldings, trim, floor and ceiling tile, paint and paint supplies and many other building materials.

out to the customer's car for loading.

A veritable sign painters paradise, all de. partments are clearly identified as to the product, its usage and its price. With the exception of o'garden" redwood, all lumber is kiln dried and labeled only in the sense of its usage (shelving, paneling, etc.). Industry terms such as construction, standard & better, shop, etc. are avoided.

Minton's is also unique in another respect, that being the fact that the company is the largest millwork house of its type in northern California. Naturally, the accrual of shor:s, plywood and plastic trimmings and odd pieces of mouldings is immense

and both the Mountain View 'oPink Room" and the new Saratoga branch ofier a perfect outlet for what otherwise would be millwork waste.

Minton Lumber was established 54 years ago when Owen Minton's dad, Earl, purchased the old Parkinson Bros. Lumber Co. in Mountain View. Owens, who now heads the firm, has been connected with the business his entire life and has been instrumental in the building of both the millwork and retail ends of the operation.

Minton's millwork division has shipped material to every corner of the globe and has done work on everything from missile

bases to ski resorts at home.

Somewhat newer, Minton's retail division was established in 1955, followed by the construction of a new, modern hardware and building supply outlet a block away from the mill in 1957. Enter Lyle Schafer, former South Bend, Indiana, retailer in January 1960, who along with Minton devised the self-service o'Pink Room" lumberteria at Mountain View, and now at Saratoga.

With further expansion plans for the retail division on the drawing board, Minton's o'tail" just might be oowagging the dog" one of these days!

Plywood Rigid Frame System puts you in the packaged building business without adding athing to your inventory.

)bu can sell the basic shell for cabins or farm buildings for less than $100 per square foot, including all labor.

With this new system from the American Plywood Association you can compete with any franchised metal building system on the market. It costs less, goes up faster and you get a better building.

You-or your customers-can use the rigid frame system for all kinds of structures. Barns and poultry houses. Factories and. warehouses. Shops and offices. Even churches and classrooms.

And in the second-home field, a

new rigid-frame cabin plan just introduced by the American Plywood Association is a runaway best seller. (If,s called the Sportsman's Cabin. If you don't stock this plan, maybe you should-see coupon.)

Key to the system is a rigid frame that consists of four straight pieces of lumber tied together with plywood gussets to form a giant arch. In effect, it's a combination of studs and rafters in one easy-to-use practical building component. When frames are set up in series and covered with plywood you have the basic shell of a tight, strong building-often for less than $l/sq. ft.

The system can be used to get buildings wii,h a clear span of from 2L to 48 feet wide, and any length -with 40 per cent less labor than ordinary cpnstruction

Best of all, you can get into the rigid frame business without adding special hardware, special fastenings or anything else to your existing inventory of plywood and lumber.

The American Plywood Association's new Rigid Frame Design Manual tells all about it.

Send for yours today.

VERY NOW AND then I meet some gruff spoken, stiff necked, big headed, grouchy fellow, who knows no opinion but his own, gives no thought to the other fellow, acts like a czar, and looks upon himself as something exceptionally fine that the Lord has turned out, and I think that that must be the sort of bird that Bobby Burns had in mind when he said:

"Oh, would someone the gift would give us To see ourselves as others see us."

Isn't it both strange ""d;"""; the perspective that this sort of person gets concerning those characteristics that go to make bigness and grealness. For this sort of man always thinks he is a great manat worst a BIG man.

The thinkers ot th" *ori n;" ; agreed upon one fact concerning greatness, which is, that great men are invariably kindly, gentlemen'

Trace the history of the world and you will find that this is true. Trace the history of our nation and the fact is forcefully driven home.

The fact is that men who travel much, see, hear and do much, have discovered this very pertinent factITITTLE men are hard to get to, and BIG men are easy of approach.

If you are in New York and have some business you would like to transact with the biggest banker there, you send in your card and the next thing you know this busy man is shaking hands with you.

But you meet more little men, the world over, who are "in conference" and can't see you, or whose secretary makes you tell the story of your life, who you are, what you want to see this business colossus about etc., before you can possibly be ushered into the august presence.

Just as you meet socially unfortunate people who think that the way to demonstrate that they are some deal is to "snub" somebody on every occasionthus demonstrating their woeful ignorance of what "gentleman" or 'ogentle.woman" really means, so in business you meet a great percentage of mental lightweights who become obsessed of the notion that they must demonstrate their station by an unusual show of pomp and power.

Wood Mqrketing, Inc. Holds Annuql

All subscribing members of Wood Marketing, Inc. will have an opportunity to review and evaluate both short and long-range promotion programs at their first stockholder meeting. This meeting has been scheduled for November 11, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Wood Marketing, Inc. is a new organization designed to create increased sales opportunities for the products and services of its members and to increase the total market for quality graded lumber and other wood products.

Promotion progriuns to be presented to the members for their consideration have been developed over the last several months by the steering committee of WMI, with John L. Robins, vice president-marketing, Simpson Timber Company as chairman. Robins has indicated that the proposed programs are based on a concept that will work nationwide, but will be carried out at the local market level. He has emphasized the point that the programs would be new, dynamic and flexible and tend to complement current programs of other lumber industry groups.

Other activities at the meeting will include the election of officers and a board of directors for the forthcoming year. WMI chairman of the board, Leonard K. Floan, of Potlatch Forests, Inc. has stated that this first annual meeting will be open to all lumber and wood products companies interested in WMI programs, and that their attendance would be most welcome.

"The structural laminating grades of redwood referred to in the standards were developed from extensive surveys and special studies relating to their use in structural glued laminated timrber," explained Peter Johnson, CRA's manager of technical services. "The working stresses for the grade combinations are the result of a statistical analysis of this study. For this reason, the stresses apply only to mem, bers laminated from California redwood, manufactured from timber grown within the area defined in the Standard Specifications for Grades of California Redwood Lum,ber of the Redwood Inspection Service."

The new data sheet contains four tables for easy reference, and is illustrated by a number of photographs showing the varied uses of glued laminated redwood.

f MA has come up with a real winner-its Top Management L Corrf"r"r,ce which was held late in September at Lake Tahoe' From all indications, this will become an annual affair for our association. ***

Upwards of 50 persons participated in the program which featured four speakers over a two-day period. Chet Nortz, mountain states executive officer flew in from Salt Lake City, Bernie Barber joined the group and Art Hood sat in on the sessionall in addition to the top management dealers from northern California.

Observing today's retail lumber dealer at a function such as this was most illurni' nating. There wasn't a man in the group who was willing to just sit back and listen. Every man not only left the conference with a well-filled notebook of ideas which he can put into practice, but he also went home with the ".r.*"r, to some of the questions which have been bothering himperhaps for manY months.

Each speaker told his audience to interrupt him at any time to ask a question related to the subject matter and boy, did the ques' tions ever flv back and forth.

"This type of meeting is one of the best I have ever participated in." one dealer told me, while still others said it gave them ideas which more than paid for *the time and expense of participating'

Each person attending the Top Management Conference was given a critique sheet on which he could record his opinion of the i"ndividual speakers, subject matter, location and meeting facilities, etc.

Comments were excellent, and I'd be pleased to share them with you the next time you are in the office. Just ask me, they are exleilent readittg uttd wiil quickly convince you that if you missed this conferenci, you won't:niss the next one!

As this column goes to press, LMA is engrossed in another most important educational ptogrum in eoop, eration with the California ani N"uada state higlway patrols. Meetings are being held in various cities throughout northern California in an effort to ac' quaint drivers and oiher yard personnel with highway regulations, defensive driving tactics, loading techniques and other matters'

One of the real benfits of membership in LMA is the increasing number of such meetings which are being brought to the individual dealer's area. ThesJmeetings are generally held after business hours to permit maximum attendance.

If you are not a member of LMA, drop me a note and I will be pl"us"d to call on you and give you dozens of more reasons why we think you should join with us and make our industry even more successful.

Contilevered Floors

Timber Engineering Company has announced the availability of a free folder on cantilevered floor framing in light construction. Describing the use of Teco Line-A-Joist connectors for "inline" joists, the folder explains how to use smaller size joist

members when utilizing cantilever design teehniques.

Engineered to transmit vertical shear forces from one "inline" joist member to an adjacent joist member, the LineA-Joist connector is manufac-

Unlike conventional floor framing where joists are either lapped or buttcd together over a central support, the Teco Line-A-Joist system calls for one of the joists to be cantilevered beyond the central support and joined to a short joist through the use of the Line-AJoist connector. The long joist is referred to as the "cantilevered joist" and the short joist is referred to as the "supported joist".

Shingle Burequ Feles "First Fifty"

Although there was an appropriate, even nostalgic, ceremony commemorating the jj first fifty years of the Red Cedar Shingle i;. & Handsplit Shake Bureau at the association's 50th annual meeting in Seattle last month. the assembled mill owners and managers displayed a noticeable itch to get on with the business at hand.

Few, if any, of the 300 celebrants were around when the Shingle Branch of the :-West Coast Lumber Manufacturer's Association, forerunner of the bureau, opened its doors in 1915, but to a man they are deeply involved in today's expanding market for red cedar shingles and handsplit shakes.

Stewart Ferguson, elected to his second term as president, keynoted the recurring

theme of growth by urging all segments of the industry, including. retail and wholesale dealers, roofing contractors and manufacturers, to t'unite in creating an even better, even larger market." P. L. Whitall, of Vancouver, 8.C., was elected vice-president.

To bolster the optimism, secretary-manager Virgil G. Peterson, re-elected to his eleventh consecutive term, pointed to an impressive 23 percent increase in production over the past five years, placing the industry in its best position in recent memory.

However, Peterson tempered his enthusiasm by listing potential stumbling blocks, notably the "increasing aggressiveness of our competition in promoting some of the negative aspects of our products." Also listed by Peterson was the need for in-,.creased efforts in the buildine code field.

NAWTA Urges Joint Acfion

The president of National-American Wholesale Lumber Association has called upon all levels of the lumber industry to unite in what he refers to as o'the kind of cooperative efiort necessary if we are to remain in the housing market." Bruce F. Harris, Pittsburgh wholesaler and NAWLA president, says oothe facts indicate- the urgency- of a crisis we are facing in marketing lumber products, and we'd better realize that we are going to hive to do something about it."

"Only 17 percent of the consumer disposable income is spent on housing, _a figure which is decreasing steadily. The building materials industry is not in tune with what the people want, anJ there is little feed-back of information from the retail level through the wholesalers to the manufacturer in the lumber industry. There is no question as to the demand in our own country for housing units in the future, only a question of what form thesl new units will take," Harris says.

Harris states that his associaiion is asking manufacturers, associations and individual firms to include wholesalers in their annual meetings, marketing conferences, and at discussions where sales plans are made.

Government Kills Wolnut Controls

_ Stunned by Commerce Secretary John T. Connor,s third and latest refusal this year to reimpose export controls on black warnut logs, the American Walnut Manufacturers, Association has vowed not to give up the fight. At press time manufacturers were asking Congress to add the export controls they sought from the Commerce department.

In announcing his latest decision, Connor conceded. in effect. that in-10 or ll-years the U.S. may run out of veneer grade walnut logs. But he insisted that export controls would do little to stem the tide, that more elements of the American economy would be hurt than helped by such action, and that the only eifective way to stretch supplies would be to slap restrictions on domestic use, a move requiring congressional action.

We 6re not giving up the fight," the AWMA,s Donald H. Gotr said.

Western Wood Design Center

A unique, full-time "design center" for the design, construction and photographing of a continual flow of new design ideas using western woods in all available species and products has been established in Portland. It is a joint venture of the W'estern Wood Products Association, Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, and Western Wood Moulding Producers, according to D. Donald Lonie, Jr., whose Lonie Company handles various phases of product publicity {or each of the three associations.

Believed to be the first full-time design center for the creation of new end uses for wood ever established in the country, the new venture will be known as the Western W.ood Design Center.

The wood design center will operate under the direction of Lonie and will employ a full-time shop and superintendent. The center will utilize the talents and furnishings of Design Center, Inc., a Beaverton, Oregon home furnishings firm, to help plan and accessorize some of the sets.

Among the kinds of end uses of western wood products which will be constructed and photographed during 7966, arc outdoor decks, storage structures, fences, outdoor entertainment centers, basement remodelings, attic remodelings, new paneling designs, rcom dividers, childrens' bedroom additions, built-ins, western red cedar siding applications, use of mouldings in design and decoration, and many others.

Christmos Tree Monogemenl

California forest land owners, by managing their young natural stands of firs and pines, could supply all of the Christmas trees sold in the state each year.

They have a big potential market. California is now growing about 900,000 Christmas trees a year but buying another three million trees from other states.

That is the message to land owners in a new publication of the University of California Agricultural Extension Service, o'Manag' ing and Marketing California Forest-Grown Christmas Trees." The 20-page booklet, illustrated with photographs of natural Christmas tree stands and drawings shows methods and tools of tree management and is designed to help land owners make the most of their land.

Wood Kitchen Cobinets: The Chomp

A major steel producer has decided to quit the manufacture of steel kitchen cabinets, because of declining markets and increased production costs. Republic Steel Corp. has announced their kitchen cabinet production will cease January 1.

Since the early postwar period, wood kitchen cabinets have gained a virtual monopoly in new home construction. Recent surveys estimate wood's share of the kitchen cabinet market to be upwards of 80 percent.

Overheod Tihing Door for Goroges

A new type of overhead tilting door for residential and low garag:es, introduced recently in Holland, incorporates a novel mechanical system and weight boxes both of which are designed especially to prevent delailment of steel cables as well as accidental collapse of the door and subsequent injur.'ies.

According to the manufacturer, Robot Inschuifbare Vlieringtrappen-Kanteldeuren, of Goirle, The Netherlands, its standard size door is 5 ft. 11 inches high by 7 ft. 10 inches wide. Made quite attractively of paneled wood internally, the new door is comparatively easy to install and offers longterm service,

At the top and bottom cornels on the inside of the door, there are wheels which move or1 bearings along round tubes. The

horizontal tubes arranged within the garage.

In the process of opening the door, the bottom part moves upwards along the vertical tubes. Simultaneously, the top of the door is carried backwards along the horizontal tubing.

When it is being opened or closed, the dool is always in equilibrium, regaldless of its position. This is achieved by securing a cable to the bottom corners of the door and suspending rveights enclosed in boxes from the cable. Providing extremely stable balance, the weight boxes are an additional safety measure to prevent the door from falling precipitously. The boxes can be placed either at the flont or the rear of the garage.

New Royoloote Cherry Pqnels

A new type of sharp, rich grain adds visual depth to two new cherry panels just announced by Masonite Corporation as additions to its popular Royalcote paneling group.

Both Mount Vernon Cheny, a more for-

mal, darker tone, and New Honeytone Cherry, a warm medium-toned successor to Masonite's long-popular Honeytone, feature a new "in depth" graining process greatly adding to the three-dimensional fine cherry effect.

The new panels have color coordinated random matched grooves and long wearing surfaces. Like other Royalcote panels, they are dent resistant, easy to apply, and maintained by occasional damp wiping.

Both new cheny grains are introduced nationally in 4 ft. widths and in lengths of 7, 8, and 10 ft.

An introductory offer to dealers includes a free portable displayer, with two full size panel inserts, and, a free case of cartridge adhesive.

(Continu,ed, lrom Page 13 ) time visitors have vowed to return. This was the day that the magnificent arrangements of Jay O'Malley and his hard-working crew became most evident. The cooler mornings were left free for golfers, swimmers and sightseers. We chose to look at Taliesen West, Frank Lloyd Wright's legacy to desert architecture. Built of native stone, redwood and glass, the complex now housing the Wright Foundation, is a fascinating example of form and functional-. ism equalling beauty.

The wives left for a luncheon and later bridge with Dottie Davis, Jane Wright and Patti Johnson; the gentlemen to be entertained, and we mean entertained, by [.es Oliver, tribal chief of the White Mountain Apaches. The afternoon was deVoted to business meetings. The evening at nearby Pinnacle Peak featured whiskey and steaks and gunfights and whiskey, and music and whiskey and whish-.

CONVENTION ROttS ON

Tuesday found us busy with committee meetings in the morning. The girls went shopping in Scottsdale and lunched at Trader Vic's. The afternoon par.rel moderated by Marty Wist, oolVhat Makes a Club Go," was outstanding. Edward Clifi, chief of the U.S. Forest Service, gave a very enlightening talk at lunch. Pete and Mary Jane Van Voorhis. a most charming couple, entertained a few of us for cocktails at their home. If Dick and Isabel Scott had not thrown in the cocktail sponge and parted for dinner about nine we might still be there. Dick and Isabel Scott did -we say? Yes, that's right!

Wednesdayah, Wednesdaythere is a day to remember! W'e slept late, had a short session with Bob Holder; heard o'Jocko" Conlan, that great retired National League umpire, bring down the house with his anecdotes at lunch; we sang our swansong; clapped loudly and enthusiastically as new Snark Brad Dempsey and new Vice President Jack Mitchell were formally

elected; shed a real tear when that fine gentleman, Glenn Ross, who has done so much for the order, was embalmed; listened to a charming, warm man named Barry Goldwater, tell us some fascinating things about his Indian neighbors in Arizona, and then did what we never domade an evening of it on the last night of a convention. We know better than this, but our bride went to bed early, Mary Jane Van Voohris danced with us, the stars were out, the music good, and $l bought a gigantic drink.

California Lumber Merchant Dear Mr. May,

Of all the publications we receive The Merchant is the one we enjoy the most and feel it is a must to read. In our opinion it is our only source of factual information concerning wood products. Eighty percent of our business is dealing in west coast wood products, consequently we refer to your publication for suppliers and new product ideas.

In our opinion the wood producers have given the fence industry very little consideration and almost no assistance in promoting wood fences. The fence industry is over a billion do lar a year business, nationwide, with a fair share going to the wood industry. Our California way of living is expanding and I believe the privacy fence market has only just been scratched.

I have been asked by the president of the International Fence Industry Association, Mr. Frank Zechter to help inform everyone connected with our industry in any way of our purpose. 'We have the 4th annual convention and show to be held Dec. 2-3-4-5 at Miami Beach, Florida.

Our small company has intentions of purchasing booth space at the IFIA show. Partially due to the fact that the lumber producers haven't come up with any suggestions or new ideas and products. Union L'umber Co., Williamette Valley Manufacturing Co., and Frontier Fence Co. have engaged booth space and we are grateful for this. This keeps it from being a metal fence show, which would not be a true pieture of the fence industry.

Re: California Lumber Merchant, Sept. 1965 issueLMA News and Views by Bob McBrien, the purpose of our or-

ganizalion is along the same lines and some of us know the fence industry is past due for an upgrading. Yours trulv, K. C. "Abe" Willis Charley's Fence ComPanY, Inc. Baldwin Park, California

Gibson [umber Promoles Dellinger

Virgil Dellinger has been promoted to manager of Gibson Lumber Company's

retail yard at Indio, Calif., according to Harry C. Bleile, president of the southern Calilornia firm.

A lS-year lumber veteran, Dellinger was formerly with the Home Lumber Co." Las Vegas, before accepting a position with Cihson-Indio in 1963.

"Gibson-Indio is featuring a new selling concept, catering to the homeowner and small businessman," says Dellinger. "We are no longer pursuing sales of trat'ts and large developments," he added. The yard will place special selling emphasis on {encing, cut plywood, hardware and special service items.

Nqtionql-Americon Soles Troining Course hos Money Bock Guoronlee

A new, nationwide sales training program for wholesale lumbermen and millmen will be launched this month by the National-American Wholesale Lumber Association.

A money-back guarantee, believed to be the first of its kind in the industry, is a unique feature of the sales training program. Persons taking the course will receive their complete enrollment fee back if they do not show definite sales improvement.

The new program represents a departure

from the prior format in that enrollees will participate simultaneously all over the country by correspondence rather than through attendance at one-day seminars as was done in the past.

Enrollees will receive sales training material in 10 installments throughout the year. An interesting feature of the course is an o'immediate playback" wherein lumbermen taking the course are asked to send in one example each within three weeks following receipt of a given installment on how the lesson learned in that installment helped improve sales.

Wholesale and manufacturing firms whose sales people participate in the course are
