"How I sold $160 worth of Weldwood Paneling 0n the first try"
By JOHN CRABTREE
"It was so simple I didn't think it was possible. After all, I'm not very experienced and I had been working at my uncleis yard for only two weeks (Crabtree Lumber Co., Jacksonville, Florida ).
"One of the features in the showroom there is the new Weldwood Panel Parade display. And one night we had a meeting of every employee (even the yard men and the janitor!) to discuss how this display could help us sell more high-profft Weldwood Paneling. One of the points mentioned was that if a customer didn't want to panel a whole room, we could suggest an 'accent wall'of wood paneling. Like for a ffreplace wall.
"The very next day a woman came in looking for paneling. Showing her the large samples on the Weldwood display, I sold her 8 pieces of mahogany Planktex!
"Then - remembering from the night beforeI suggested an 'accent wall'for her ffreplace. She not only liked the idea, she bought I sheets of preffnished walnut! An extra $75 sale!
"I'm glad we had that meeting. Because it's convinced me that with the right training, the right display and the right product, anyone can add extra profft to a sale."
John Crabtree's experience can be repeated in your yard. High-
profit sales are the rule-rather than the exceptionwith Weldwood Paneling. For Welclwood backs every dealer upall the way! First, with a national advertising program in LIFE, Better Homes & Gardens, and other top magazines. Next, Weldwood aids like signs, booklets and newspaper mats let you tie in. Then, Weldwood's new Panel Parade display plan-adaptable to any size space in any showroomshows dozens of woods in big sizes that customers like, and buy!
And, on top of all this, Weldwood is readyat no expense to youto train your salesmen horo to sell Weldwood Paneling and those other high-margin items you'd love to move.
Don't miss your chance to get a share of this profftable market. Get on the phone and call your Weldwood representative today. Make him prooe what Weldwood can do for you. He uill!

The Colifornio Lumber tlerchont Wins 'Top Story' Aword
On August 14, The CALIFORI{IA LUMBER MERCHANT was notified by telegram that it had been selected to receive a "Top Story" Award at the 1956 Cal.ifornia State Fair and Exposition, and last month, on the evening of September 1, the handsome plaque illustrated at the right was presented to your lumber and building materials trade journal by Governor Goodwin J. Knight in Governor's Hall on the State Fairgrounds at Sacramento at a dinner honoring the state's Press-RadioTelevision facilities.
The "Merchant's" top-story entry this year was its coverage of 'the devastating Northern California floods last December just before Christmas. Through day-by-day reporting from his contacts on the scene, this magazine's Northern California representative, Max M. Cook, gclt the details of the tremendous flood havoc in the mill area to the Los Angeles editorial offrces, where, in rapid-fire order, they were compiled in a running commentary and rushed into the January 15 issue while the damage was still being tallied and fresh flood warnings were being posted.
The State Fair committee reported a record-breaking number of entries this year from the state's leading newspapers of all classes, radio and television stations, and magazines. One of only three "Top Story" winners among all of the many entries in the trade journal field, the Award to this publication read:
..TOP STORY AWARD_THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT, Los Angeles, for 'Flood Disaster.'-For intelligent and lively use of a semimonthly periodical to supplement daily news on a catastrophe of major interest to an industry."

Government Eqses Home-building Money to Spur log in Construclion, But Builders, Lenders Soy lf's Not Enough
The government took four steps late last month to spur lagging construction by easing up the "tight money" market but spokesmen for the building and savings and loan industries only called it "a step in the right direction." Albert M. Cole, boss of the Federal Housing Administration, lowered some down-payment requirements to ease the flow of mortgage money and said the governmental action "r,vill be very helpful in stimulating the mortgage market."
FHAdministrator Cole said the effect would be felt immediately but predicted that the "biggest impact" would not come for a couple of months.
Some of the mortgage bankers criticized the government's actions as "inflationary" and Willian, Levitt, pres-
Socol Home-building Record
Willard Woodrow, National Ffome Month chairman for the Home Builders fnstitute, said on the occasion of National Home Week last month that sometime during this Fall the industry will start construction in Southern CAlifornia of the 1,300,000th home since 1946. "This unparalleled record of construction achieved in just 11 years has truly been a "o111s1stqn€ upon which prosperity for all industry has been built in this area," he said.

ident of the giant construction firm, called the steps "most inadequate."
The four steps announced by the White House-all effective immediately on deals which are not actually closed -would:
Lower to 5/o from 7/o down pavment on homes appraised at less than $9,000 under the Federal Housing Administration's mortgage insurance program. There would be no change in the down payment requirement on F. H. A. homes appraised at more than $9,000.
Membei savings and loan associations of the Federal Home Loan Bank system will be able to borrow up to I2%% of their share capital, instead of. only l0/o.
Sellers of F. A.-V. A. mortgages to the Federal National Mortgage Association will be required to buy the association's common stock in an amount equal to 1/o-instead of. 2/o-of the mortgages they sell.
The F. N. M. A. also will increase to 94/o from 92/o the price it pays on advance commitments to buy F. H. A.V. A. mortgages at a later date.
These moves, the White House said, will "encourage home builders and home buyers to plan ahead with greater assurance of adequate financing." In particular, the Administration said, the credit relaxations would help the constrtrction of lower-price homes. Housing Administrator Cole added his personal prediction that housing starts, now running at an annual rate of about 1,100,000 units, might yet reach 1,200,000 units this year.
For the first eight months of the year, housing starts

have been running at an anirual rate of about 1,100,000. Earlier in the year, Mr. Cole had forecast housing production of 1,300,000 units for 1956. Mr. Cole admitted this prediction was "out the window," but said 1,200,000 starts this year still represented a "very sound housing rrlarket."
The White I{ouse announcement clirnaxed months of campaigning by the home building industry and some mortgage lenders for Federal help. Earlier last month, the National Association of Home Builders told its 39,000 members, in effect, to pare home construction to a minimum unless the Government took some action to ease the mort' gage money market (CLM, Page 24, LO/l/56).
"The Government's move to relax some of its restraints on the flow of mortgage credit for home buyers and builders is a step in the right directiori," said Joseph B. Haverstick, president of the National Association of Home Builders. "It would be premature, however, to attempt to predict at this time how effective these measures will be. Much will depend on the willingness and ability of mortgage lenders to increase their investment in new home construction on these terms," he added.
In Los Angeles, Joseph Crail, president o[ the Coast Federal Savings and Loan Assocation, one of the country's biggest, predicted "a burst of enthusiasm in home sales and increased requests for loans right away" as a result of the credit-easing steps.
A spokesman for another savings and loan institution in Southern California said he expected home loan activities to pick up somewhat, but doubted the reaction would be strongly felt right away.
Commissioner Mason of the FHA challenged what he
called "the common misconception" that there are very few homes now being built in the $9,000 or less price range. He declared there is probably very little change this year from FHA's 1955 figures that Tl/o of all new homes financed under the agency's mortgagd-insurance program were in the $9,00O and less class, and that 231/o of. all homes, new and existing, financed with FHA-insured mortgages, were in that range.
The commissioner said FHA is reviewing its minimum property requirements for several of its programs in the $9,000 and under price range to see if reductions in standards might be made without advi:rsely affecting the value to the buyer. In addition, he said FHA is studying specific cases of construction in key areas to determine where local requirements might be causing increased costs.
SCRTA Conference Getting Close
The Program committee of the Southern California Retail Lumber Assn., under the chairmanship of Hal Brown, has had its preliminary luncheon meeting to map the plans for the SCRLA's seventh annual Retail Lumber Dealers Conference at Palm Springs, which will be held at El Mirador hotel this year, November 14-16. Executive Vice-President Orrie W. Hamilton says it is going to be the best and one of the most helpful conferences the association has so far held.
Questionnaires were sent out after last year's conference to determine their likes and dislikes and, now that the dealers have made known what they want, the 1955 Palm Springs meeting will be tailored to the specifications of the majority.

A fundamental value of the modern luncheon club is the fact that men who meet together, eat together, talk, laugh, sing together, carry away a softened spirit toward the gang they just visited with. Animation, good cheer, and enthusiasm are very tangible and practical assets of modern business. Other good things are found in these clubs, but those mentioned alone make them highly valuable.

The CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT sincerely regrets any embarrassment that may have been caused to the Carter Lumber Company, of Oakland, California, through a reference to it in an article in the June 15, 1956, issue regarding the Carter Mill & Lumber Company, of Los Angeles. In writing up the Carter retail yard of Los Angeles, a reference was made to the "former Carter Lumber Company of Oakland." The wording was intended only to mean the business formerly personally conducted there by Morris B. Carter, now operating the Carter Mill & Lumber Co. in Los Angeles. However, it was not so construed by the principals of the present Carter Lumber Company in Oakland and, in case any other readers
mistook an inaccurate wording, we hasten to make restitution of the facts and report that there is not only now (and has been for'several years) a present Carter Lumber Company in Oakland 6ut that it is operating very successfully under the ownership of Mrs. F. D. A. Meglen.
Mrs. Meglen declares that her Carter Lumber Company of Oakland is still very much in business, as it has been since 1940, and that, furthermore, it is going out FOR business not out of business. Mrs. Meglen brings to our attention that the lumber company of the same name in Southern California is not and never has been connected with her long-established, progressive yard in Oakland.
The Carter Lumber Company, one of the Bay area's foremost retail yards, is located on a S-acre corner at 400 High St. in the heart of industrial Oakland. It has long been known as a keen competitor for both the industrial and contractor trade. and in recent months the firm has been undergoing a refitting for the walk-in trade as well. The physical assets of the yard include 60,000 sq. ft. of under-cover storage area, five trucks, carriers, lifts, spur-track facilities and all of the other equipment a modern building materials yard needs.
The office and showroom alone occupy more than 11,000 sq. ft. of building space fronting on High street. Recently, Mrs. Meglen has further diversified the (Continued on Page 10)

Architects and builders are no longer limitedby local conditions of climatein their selection of the finished toofing mateiial. For any type of sructure and any pitch of roof, ltr?'ilson Air-cor provides the dependable roof decking.
126 days of testing by the Engineeting Research Department of a leading State University demonstrated "the feasibility of actually drying a wet roof of the Air-cor rype by weather air ventilation." The published report recognizes the impracticality of a perfec! vapor barrier. Vith STilson Air-cor, there is no need for a perfect barriet.' The revolutionary principle of ventilation embodied in Wilson Air-cor Roof Decking ovelcomes the severest conditions of humidity arid temperature. Extensive research and actual use prove that Wilsoo Air-cor makes condensation a problem of the past.
The description of this remarkable product in the Homasote Handbook begins: "The panel consists of 2 x 2 wood members 12" o.c. nailed and glued between two pieces of 75,62" Homasote. On the lower inside of the Vilson Air-cor Panel there is /{' of batt type insulation, with a vapor barrier on the bottom side, and a ventilated

Ait enters at the roof edges-where a rake mold is nailed on f(" blocks over screen wire-and insect-free air circulates the length of the roofing.
The Handbook continues with specifications, test data, and building insructions. For example, you may be surprised to learn that the problem of ridge and filler has been taken care of with the Wilson Air-cor Ridge Panel. You will be happy to 6nd that Wilson Air-cor is actually a Enished ceiling-with three beautiful under-surfaces to choose from (or even Sote Asbestos Board). Accurate tables and complete diagrams give the rigbt information, from width of ridge required for any number of courses, even to pre-drilled nail holes - just one more example of the tnow-how of the Homasote Handbook.
The new 68-page Homasote Handbook has the right answers to 99 other building problems-answers backed by 46 years'experience in the making of quality materials. !fle are proud of this book, and have confidence in its basic value to every architect, builder, and dealer. The great electrical engineer, Steinmetz, was asked how a young man might best achieve success, and he said: "Don't try to see how fast you can make your machine run, but try rather to see how perfectly and smoothly you can make it operate, and then the speed will take care of its.elf.,,
I was just a kid when I heard a school teacher tell a class a story that impressed me so much that I told and retold it for years. It occurs to me that it might find a lot of interested readers today. He said:
"You take a bushel basket and fill it nearly full of potatoes just as they come from the hill, big, little, great, and small. You shake that basket, and do you know what happens? The big potatoes shake to the top, the smallest potatoes shake to the bottom, and the others take rank close to top and bottom just according to their size. Mix them up again any way you want to, but every time you shake the bushel the same thing happens. Exactly. The big potatoes come to the top, the little ones go to the bottom, and the rest stop just according to their size.
"And men are the same way. You shake the bushel of humanity and the big men come to the top, the smallest men go to the bottom, and the others just take their places in between. Rearranging them won't change the thing in the least. Whenever you shake the bushel of humanity, that's what happens. Now and then some little potato will complain and say-'I never had a chance. I,m always down where I cannot show my ability. put me on top with those big potatoes and I'll show you what kind of a potato f am.'
So you reach to the bottom and pull him up and put him on top of all the potatoes in the bushel. Then shake it, and watch him go down until he hits bottom, just where he was before. fs there a moral to this story? Certainly. The moral is that a man or boy should go to work to build himself big, not on the outside, but on the inside. And when he d,evelops and grows, he will find a place nearer to the top of the bushel when it is shaken. With men, big means great, not taller or heavier, but stronger, and wiser, and more able."
If the teaching of that old gentleman impressed all his listeners like it did me, then he was a mighty teacher, for I consider it one of the very best lessons I ever listened to.
Al Frosf, Sr. Wriffen Up
Albert Frost, Sr., founder in 1911 of the Frost Hardrvood Lumber Co., San Diego, was pictured and rvritten up in a recent issue of San Diego Business as he supervised the unloading of choice lumber he purchased in Japan when it was transferred into the B Street Pier at San Diego recently. The senior Frost was in Japan this May and June to visit his daughter, Dr. Helen Tinsley, M.D., a member of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission.
While there, Mr. Frost bought 100,000 board feet of Philippine mahogany, Japanese birch and oak and some plywood, and it made up the largest shipment of lumber ever sent from the Orient to San Diego. It was unloaded late in August from the President Taft.

Winter's on the way! And with it, the annual spate of church bazaars.
While the seasonal activities of the local place of worship may seem a long way from those of a lumber yard, one Tacoma, Wash., retail lumber dealer has come up with a unique i-dea ihat ought to fit into the operations of scores of other dealers interested in building do-it-yourself sales volume ai Christmas.
And the Douglas Fir Plywood Assn. has come up with a new approach to merchandising fir plywood for outdoor Christmas decorations which ought to eliminate any bugs which may have limited this kind of sale in the past.
The dealer, Robert Spencer, owner of Spencer Hardware and Lumber, simply worked out a cooperative arrangement with the ladies of a nearby church under which he supplied patterns for fir plywood Christmas cutouts to a church bazaar in return for r,r'hich customers were directed to his yard for plywood.
Spencer points out that he not only increased his fir plywood sales as an immediate result but he also built good will among a number of people whom he had never seen before, and he paved the way for other cooperative projects in the future that could be even more profitable.
The mechanics of the project are so simple that any alert lumber dealer should be able to set up the same type of thing with local church groups or benefit sales in his area. The project stems from the full-size, full-color paste-on patterns for Christmas decorations Douglas Fir Plywood Association is offering to retail lumber dealers.
Says W. E. Difford, association managing director:
"For several years, dealers have asked us for Christmas sales helps but the old-fashioned plans and patterns required too much artistic ability and know-how from the potential customer that drastically reduced the sales potential. The new approach licks this problem nicely."
This year, the association is offering dealers a merchandising kit keyed to full-size, four-color paste-on patterns for several outdoor decorations. The most ineffectual duffer couldn't go wrong with the new patterns even if he tried. All he does is glue the pattern on a panel of plywood and cut around the edge.
The association's 1956 Christmas merchandising kit is built around three sets of patterns-a jolly six-foot Santa Claus figure, a set of two four-foot angels with a lightecl candle, and a set of three four-foot choir boys.
'5:,t
I
In addition, each of the three sets which are designed to be made from one piece of fir plywood allows enough space for bonus figures to utilize any leftovers. For example, there is room on the 4x8-foot panel after the Santa Claus is cut out for a wreath ; rvith the angels, a candle and a star may be included; and a music scroll can be obtained along with the choir boys.
In all, three sets gives material for cluite a Christmas decoration motif, whether it is for the larvn, front porch, patio area or, as some do, for the roof.
Spencer offered members of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Church on the Prairie, a suburban, community-type small church in the southern section of Tacoma, the paste-on patterns at his cost-25 cents per set. The sets, all done in beautiful 4-color and realistic figures, were sold by the

hard-working auxiliary members at their "Christmas Fair," along with their regular cakes, jellies, handmade aprons and other gift items which are normally made at home and sold for profit. Profits of the bazaar go to finance Sunday School operations. The price was fifty cents a pattern; the ladies sold enough to make the whole thing worthwhile for all concerned.
Tlle auxiliary set up a regular booth decorated with Christmas cutouts and a sign inviting those purchasing the paste-ons to Spencer's for plywood panels.
The association recommends fu-inch exterior-type Plyshield, or thicker, depending on where you will place your figures, and emphasizes that while the operation is simplicity itself, the paste-ons must be glued firmly to the plywood with a water-resistant glue.
With each set of paste-ons, the association sends to dealers complete instructions on cutting, assembling and making the final touches to what should be an interesting outdoor display for the Yule season.
The patterns, now being featured in many national maga-
zine advertisements, are available to dealers at 25 cents per set, thus giving the dealer opportunity to make profit on the sale of the pattern as well as on the plywood, or any other equipment he may sell along with it. Dealers may buy a few of them at a time or in quantities at $2.50 per dozen.
The association is offering several other Christmas promotional ideas.
New point of purchase material for use in merchandising the patterns is free. This includes two L6'x42" in-store displays picturing all the patterns, one and two-column ad mats and lull color 4-page envelope stu, ffers.
In addition, the association offers train table plans for 50 cents a hundred for free distribution to customers and 500 free envelope stuffers covering the train table plans. Dealers interested in securing the material can order by letter from the information above or write for additional details to Douglas Fir Plywood Association, 1119 "4" St., Tacoma 2, Wash.

The Troinmqn's Proyer
An old railroad man was converted at a religious revival, and when they asked him to lead the congregation in prayer, he did this way:
"O Lord, now that I have flagged Thee, lift my feet off the rough deck of life and plant them firmly on the deck of the train of Salvation. Let me use the safety lamps known as prudence, make all couplings on the train with the strong link of Thy love, and, fleavenly Father, keep all the switches closed that lead off the sidings, especially those with.a blind end. O Lord, if it be Thy pleasure, have every s€maphore blocked along the line; show the white light of hope, that I may make the run of Life without stopping; and, Lord, give us the Ten Commandments as a Schedule. And when my train shall have pulled into the great, dark station of Death, may Thou say with a smile: 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant ! Come up and sign the payroll, and receive your check for eternal happiness !' "
Personol Note

Recollections
I remember, I remember, Ere my childhood flitted by, It was cold then in December, It was warmer in July. fn the winter there were freezings, In the summer there were thaws, But the weather isn't now at all Like it used to was.

"Is there anything worse than to be old and bent?" asked a philosopher, watching an aged male figure passing by.
"Much worse," answered the wayward youth. "Take being young and broke, for instance."
Work
The young freshman was half asleep when suddenly the professor's voice said:
"Mr. Jones, what is work?"
The freshman rubbed his eyes, hesitated a moment, and then answered:
"Sir, everything is work."
"What? Everything is work?"
"Yes, sir.t'
"That desk you are leaning on-is that work?"
"Yes, sir. Woodwork."
When rhe Wild Geese Fly
Every year when the grass grows gray, And the sun hangs low on a soggy day, When the late rose lifts a faltering head
To the summer days that are almost dead; Every year when a mellow note
Floats down from some squadron-leader's throat, Faint and clear through the gun-room runs, A rustle of boots and a whisper of guns.
A whisper of guns. A memory lifts
And out of a rain-torn curtain drifts
A rushing sound from ordered wings, As a phantom legion wheels and swingsWhaels and swings on an airy track, Now faint, now clear, now beating back. Feathered troops from a fog-drenched land, Ruled by the beck of a Master's hand.
Ah, gallant geese of the misty dawn, What age-old instinct leads you on? What voice from some soft summer sea Calls out, and, winging wild and free Your mighty pinions beat the air, To bear you, all unguided, there?
No man may know ! but a spirit sings And a heart beats high to the rush of wings.
Bod Monners
The colored preacher was loud in h,is praise of the brown and juicy bird his host had served him generously for dinner. Finally he asked:
"Mistah Gre€n, Whah did you get sich a fine goose?"
Mr. Green looked much disappointed in the preacherman. He said:

rEstimqting Lobor R.equirements' New NRTDA Guide for Deolers
A Dealer Operating Guide chapter entitled "Estimating Labor Requirements" has been sent to members of its federated associations by the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association. The new chapter is a companion to one issued earlier entitled "Estimating Materials Requirements." It should be helpful to any dealer interested in computing the cost of complete jobs and in taking active part in Operation Home Improvement.
The chapter contains tables showing either the number of hours normally required to put in place a stated quantity of listed materials, or the amount of each item that normally can be put in place in one hour.
In addition, the chapter contains a check list of items to be taken into account when figurine the total cost of a job, whether new construction or rnodernization work. The list contains 72 items, including land, tree removal, clean up, equipment rental, architectural fees, blueprints, surveys, permits, insurance, wrecking, etc.
Estimating data is given for typical lumberyard items such as lumber, mill'lvork,' insulation, insulating board, gypsum board, roofing, and siding. Data for nails was published previously in a D. O. G. Chapter entitled "Nails," in Section III of the Guide.

Cedqr-lined Closet Proiect Booms Sole of Homes ond Mclteriol
The cedar-lined closet project started rvhen the firm's partners, Robert Patton and William Dressler, sarv a cedar closet in a home in which they were installing insulation. They reasoned that cedar closets installed in model homes in building projects lr'ould interest prospective home buyers in having cedar closets built into their homes in the development.
Cedar-lined closets in display homes in builders' subdivision projects have been unqualifiedly successful. Over 52,000 board feet of aromatic red cedar closet lining has been used to line an averag'e of four closets in each of the homes built in the subdivisions.
The average cedar-lined closet costs the builder $32. Patton and Dressler ofier a package deal on the average linen closet, cedar-lining it for only $19 compared with the plastering cost {or the same qloset of about $21.
Patton and Dressler have the installation of cedar closets dor.vn to a scientific, assembly-line basis. The dimensions of each closet are measured in advance, then the tongued and grooved cedar boards are custom pre-cut to fit the individual closet. Using the pre-cut .ivood, one carpenter can line three average closets in one eight-hour day. Measurements; cutting and installing are so accurate that there are no wasted materials. Even the cedar sawdust is. used. It is sold to pet supply manufacturers, rvho fill dog bed mattresses with cedar sawdust to repel fleas.
The cedar closets in model homes are promoted and merchandised through a co-operative advertising campaign rvith the builder. Sales of cedar closets through model homes in the high, medium and low-priced ranges, Patton says, indicates that closets lined rvith aromatic red cedar closet lining are desired by families in all financial planes.

Employes of the Peoples Lumber Company's yard at Santa Paula and their families enjoyed a barbecue at the Steckel Park shelter, Saturday, Sept, 8, with Melvin Harrington as the chef. The party also honored Mrs. Jack Cline, wife of the manager of the lineyard for her September birthday with a gift and cake decorated: "Happy Birthday to the Boss's Wife." Also surprised with a gift were the newlywed John Thompsons.
Jack Bailen salesman for E. L. Bruce Co., has, contracted polio and was in an iron lung at Fresno Community hospital late last month. Fellow members of the San Joaquin Hoo-Hoo Club 31 could not visit him the first few days but he was expected to be out of the contagion ward by
norv and would be happy to see his friends, said Bud Barber, Jr.
Harry Whittemore, general manager of Los Angeles Lumber, Inc., is back from a survey trip to Eureka, San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley.
Lloyd Hecathorn of Arcata Redwood Company's San Francisco sales office, spent a late September week at the mill to see some new production innovations.
Charles S. White, owner of the White Lumber Company, San Francisco, and his wife were honored at the Cliff House recently on their Golden Wedding anniversary. Present were their children: Anthony and Tommy, who run the retail yard at 22nd and Noriega; Charlie, who has charge of a branch yard in Daly City, and Evelyn, the daughter from Cincinnati, as well as eight grandchildren. The senior Whites were given solid gold remembrances, a grandmother's bracelet for Mrs. White, and a pocket piece for his key chain for Mr. White, who loves to reminisce and very vividly recalls his wedding soon after the great earthquake and fire and his first White Coal and Lumber Co. yard on Clayton street, when he sold more than 100 carloads of coal every season. The White yard has expanded its lumber and building materials line and a few years ago added a hardware and housewares store in connection with the lumberyard. "Grandpa" White, who has lived 49 years at 1565 22nd Ave. in the Sunset district, still oversees all activities at the yard.

Several new lumber products will be featured in the 4th Annual Western Do-It-Yourself Show at Oakland Exposition Building, Oct. 18-28, according to show producer Ted Bentley.
The show, held annually for the Greater Bay area, opens almost a full three weeks earlier than previous years. "With the October dates, we'll miss the rainy season and visitors will have a better opportunity to purchase and apply materials and products while the weather is still good," Bentley informs. "This of course, will result in increased sales by exhibitors."
One of the many new lumber products expected.to receive wide attention at the show will be displayed by Neall Pressed Products Company of California, whose Ced-O-Board decora-

Some of the party departed directly from llureka for other destinations in the west, the principal party returning to San Francisco by chartered buses on Saturday, with a stop at the Asti Winery of the Italian Swiss Colony for a tour and souvenir gift.
This is the first visit of Hoo-Hoo International to the San Francisco area since 1910 and the sponsorship of the "Lumber Hospitality llouse" at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. All agree that one of the highlights of the current convention was the "post-convention tour to the Redwood Region."

Joponese Plywood Men See Use of Their Products in Southern Colifornin Visir
"It is the desire of the Japanese Plywood Exporters Association to explore every possibility of cooperation with the Imported Hardwood Plywood Association," said Y. Ohtomo, chairman of the Japan Plywood Trade Promotional committee visiting the Los Angeles area late last month accompanied by M. Iwakura, president of Japanese Plywood Exporters Association, and T. Kuniyoshi, vicepresident of the Japan Plywood Manufacturers Association.
Mr. Ohtomo continued, "Through the splendid sales efforts of the members of the Imported Hardwood Plywood Association in Los Angeles, Japanese plywood manufacturers have enjoyed constantly increasing outlets throughout the United States. The fluctuation in the domestic demand in Japan, as well as the variations in construction and seasonal factors in the United States, have resulted in
a situation whereby some form of constant cooperation and collaboration between our associations is necessary in order to preserve a constant volume of business."
On arrival in Los Angeles September 22, Messrs. Iwakura, Ohtomo and Kuniyoshi were met by Seiichi Nobe, president of the Pan-Asiatic Company, and John R. Osgood of the Robert S. Osgood Company, as members of the board of directors of the Imported Hardwood Plywood Association. During their stay in Southern California the Japanese representatives visited distributors, contractors, cabinet shops, door manufacturers, new residential tracts and all forms of construction rvhich are now using plywood manufactured in Japan.
A conference was held during their stay for discussion of various problems affecting the Japanese industry,-as well as the sales promotional and distribution problems of the Imported Hardwood Plywood Association members'

T\TENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY
As repo*ed in The California Lumber Merchant October 15,1931
President }loover has called a conference of prominent home builders from throughout the nation to meet in Washington December 2 to 5, to discuss promotion of more home building.
The California Lumbermen's Council was organized at Santa Cruz, September 19, to handle trade promotion activities for the building industry, in cooperation with the California Retail Lumbermen's Association. George N. Ley of Santa Cruz was elected president.
Roy Hills, who with "Duke" Euphrat owns and operates the Wendling-Nathan Company, San Francisco, predicts

Building log Hits Mill Areos
Redding, Calif.-California's homebuilding industry has been dragging its feet and the lag is being felt in Shasta and Trinity county lumber mills, The San Francisco Examiner reported September 30. Lumber is the economy rvhich holds up these two counties and between 400-500 loggers, sawmill workers and lumber truck drivers are affected.
Big mills such as U. S. Plywood Corp. and the Ralph L. Smith plant have cut their production to four days a week. K. L. Morrow, general manager of U. S. Plyrvood, said, "It is just possible that the new homes that were not started this year will be added on top of the normal starts next spring."
A. B. Hood, general manager for Ralph L. Smith, said, -We decided to curtail operations now in hope we can keep running through the winter. Any time we shorten the work week we don't feel good about it." W. C. Lorenz, Lorenz Lumber Co., said, "You can't have Christmas every day; we expect things like this when we set up big, longrange operations."
Employes of Fortuna Sawmills, Inc., went back to work Sept. 17 after one week's general shutdown due to oversupply of Douglas fir, particularly in the Los Angeles area market.
Cqloveras Buys Into Five Firms
A majority of the stock in five transit-mix and gravel producing companies in California's Central Valley has been purchased by Calaveras Cement Company in a $500,000 transaction.
The companies are Standard Materials Co., Inc., Modesto; River Rock, fnc. and Concrete Supply Co., fnc., both of Merced; Merced Sand & Gravel, Inc., Atwater, and Standard Rock Co., Inc., Escalon.
All five of the companies are in the transit-mix business, the gravel producing business, or both. No important changes in sales, personnel, suppliers, banking connections or other policies are contemplated.

Plumqs Lumber Co. Hqs Modern Operotion on Feqther River Wifh Moore Kilns
At the head of the famous Feather River Canyon in California is the Indian Valley and on the south side of this valley is located the town of Crescent Mills. About two years ago the Genesee Wood Products established a modern lumber manufacturing plant. Last June this growing operation was purchased by John and Frank Crawford and is now operated as Plumas Lumber Company.
A planing mill was first constructed at this site by the old Genesee Lumber Company, and several months ago three new Moore Cross-Circulation Kilns were added to the facilities. Two of the kilns are single track and one is double track, each 66 feet long. Like the rest of the plant, the kilns are geared for production. Grouping of the boiler and kilns is compact and convenient, giving minimum travel for the lumber from green to dry.
To get production there must be convenience. This is secured from the latest design, completely automatic, oilfired, lorv-pressure Cleaver Brooks oackage boiler, which is capable of handling several additional kilns when the need arises. Added effectiveness and convenience is provided in the kilns by automatic fan reversal, automatic vent control, and automatic temperature and humidity control, all accomplished with the Moore Autographic Controller.
For long usage the buildings are constructed ol l2-inch concrete block walls with incense cedar roofs.
Operations are under the direction of veteran lumberman Art Lund.

This brand new product has many uses such as room dividers, screening sections, linen closets, etc., and is in great demand, he continued.
For the past four years, Charlie Strait has been vicepresident and general sales manager for the Ostling Manufacturing Co., also in El Monte, California. Since last March, when he acquired the Davies Door Company plant, he has been devoting all of his time to develop this new concern. All of the employes of the Davies organization were retained and today more than 30 people are working in production and sales, according to Strait.
"We now carry an inventory in excess of 15,000 doors for the trade. The doors are available in all standard sizes and finishes, which assur€s immediate delivery," Strait said.
Charlie Strait is one of the pioneers of the flush door industry in Southern California. It was he who introduced rotary-cut Philippine Mahogany doors in this area over eight years ago. He also is credited with the first importation from Japan to California of plyr, vood cut to door sizes. He started his door-manufacturing career in Manila at the close of World War II when he was released from a prisoner-of-war camp in the Far East. He has been identified in the lumber and wood products manufacturing industry for the past 10 years, and prior to that time was engaged in the importing and exporting business in the Orient.

Fire Destroys Temeculo Yqrd
Flames which gained great headway before being discovered destroyed the Temecula Valley Lumber Company September 4. Every part of the business was lost, including the fences which surrounded it. The yard was owned by Steve Hathaway of the Oceanside (Calif.) Lumber Co., but has been operated for a number of years by Charles Watson of Temecula. The loss was serious to residents of the district hill country because Temecula is a natural shopping center because of its distance from Hemet.
State Forestry headquarters at Perris received report of the fire at 12:33 a.m., Sept. 5. Seven State Forestry trucks rolled on the fire from all neighboring stations. The fire was visible as far away as the Menifee valley. "How the people of Temecula slept through it is a mystery," said a spokesman. It rvas reported by a passing motorist from a Temecula cafe finally, after the fire probably had an hour's headway.
In addition to the yard building and office, several truckand-trailer loads of lumber stacked in the yard and lumber in the racks was lost. Two trucks were also destroyed. Firemen were still working at the scene at 8:00 a.m.

Winfree & Tynon Formation Ends Winfree rR.etiremenl'
Henry Winfree ended a short-lived, 15-day "retirement"
October 1 when he announced the formation of Winfree & Tynan, a wholesale lumber operation which will represent Dant & Russell. Inc. and the Coast Pacific Lurnber Com-
pany at Eureka, throughout Northern California. The partnership, which includes former Dant & Russell salesman Pat Tynan, will also do business with several other better known Northern California independent mills to further round out its operation.

A native of Oregon and a Navy veteran of WWII, Tynan graduated from Oregon State College in 1950 and began a career of lumber with the Mt. June Lumber Company in Springfield, Oregon, shortly after graduation. After a year at Springfield he joined Dant & Russell at Portland, was transferred to its San Francisco sales offices on January l. 1954, and has since been representing Dant & Russell in the San Joaquin Valley.
To facilitate working with Dant & Russell, Winfree & Tynan will continue to occupy the old D&R lumber division offices at 214 Front Street, San Francisco. However, the phone numbers for the new partnership have been changed to YUkon 6-5392 and 93.

Rcprerenting in Southern Calilomir: The Pacific Lumber Conpany-Vcndling-Nathrn Co.
Enfire Lossen Mill Town Sold
The town of Westwood, once a thriving lumber community in the Lassen county mountains, has been sold lock, stock and barrels to two Los Angeles auctioneers, The San Francisco Examiner reported September 30. The town and box plant, covering about 750 acres, was sold by the !'ruit Growers Supply Co. The buyers said they intended to develop the spot as a resort town and bring in industries.
More than 500 families still remain in Westwood and commute to jobs in lumber mills in surrounding Sierra communities. The area has been generally logged off. The town was bought in December 1944 from the Red River Lumber Co. It had been built almost overnight in 1913 with a railroad expansion to expedite lumbering. Fruit Growers Supply Co. branched out from boxes to pine plywood panels and in 1954 switched to production of a single plywood called "Craveneer.' From 12 million to 15
million feet of logs were put through the plywood plant each year to make about 30,000,000 sq. ft. of plywood. The sawmill and green lumber department shut down this May and the dry kiln dperation closed in June.
The Los Angeles developers now plan to utilize the surrounding hunting and fishing areas, mountain parks and lakes, as Westwood is on the through route of the Western Pacific, and the Southern Pacific railroad has it as a terminal branch.
How Lumber Looks
(Continued from Page 1) will probably approximate 1740 million teet, l0/o under the same 1955 quarter."
Production and shipments of the 20 mills reporting to the California Redwood Association during August were 61,645,000 feet and 59,016,000 feet, respectively. August figures showed a seasonal increase over July in production, shipments and orders, but a decrease of 4,154,000 feet in production and of 12,913,00O feet in shipments compared with August 1955. Orders on hand August 31 were 60,570,000 feet, compared with 96,278,000 feet on the 1955 date.
