Boost Profits on Remodeling Soles

Do-it-yourselfers are beginning to look ahead to the fall season and the various remodeling projects left over from last year. That means now is the time for lumber dealers to make plans for merchandising easy-to-use bnrilding materials and specialty items which spur impulse buying.

Specialty items such as cedar closet lining, for example, are becoming increasingly profitable for dealers who sell the material as part of a larger remodeling ttpackage."

New Frome-Fit Insulqfion Blonket

A new 48"-wide Balsam-Wool Frame-Fit insulation blanket has been announced by Wood Conversi,on Company.

Unlike conventional insulatio,n, the Frame-Fit design features recessed longitudinal strips spaced 16" ot 24" on center that fit over the bu,ildingis framing merrnbers. T9ris allorvs the thick insulation mat to lay snugly between framing.

More area can be insulated in less time and with few staples. Since the continuous blanket reduces the number of joints, heat loss can be kept to a minimum.

Two Balsam-Wool Frame-Fit insulations are availablel a regular, asphalt-impregnated liner type and a reinforced, polVethylene-coated liner product. Both are available in one and two inch thicknesses.

The regular liner type is ideal for application in ceilings, floors, pre-fab constructions, and as sound deadening material in partition walls. Sheets, pre-cut to 7' L|Yz', Iength, are easily laid over framing and spot stapled. Sheathing, in the case of tiltup panels, or rough flooring, is applied directly over the insulation. One of the nervest products to be added to the rapidly expanding line of Timber Engineering Company has contributed to a major breakthrough being made in the marketing of wood siding. The product is an ingeniously designed concealed fastening device for use in attaching beveled wood siding that has been prefinished in the mill. First producer to specify the use of the Teco fastener with its producl is The Pacific Lumber Company u'ith its nel'Palco prefinished 3A" x 10" siding.

Consisting of a lz" wide, 51" long galvanized metal strip on which are mounted a series of combination teeth and retaining tabs, the Teco fastener is designed to completely eliminate face nailing. In addition, the product minimizes paint failures caused by moisture condensation betu'een walls and siding by providing an automatic vent space between siding course,

To apply, the fastener strips are nailed vertically at stud locations either over sheathing or direct to the stud. Siding courses are then positioned against the retailing tabs and over the teeth. The tabs provide automatic alignment, thus guaranteeing: the prescribed 1" overlap. With a white .rubbel hammer being used to prevent damage to the paint fllm, the siding is tap- ped into place against the teeth of the fastener. Upon entry, the teeth spread and anchor the siding solidly.

When applied with Teco Concealed Fasteners, prefinished wood siding offers the advantages of (1) improved and longer lasting paint finishes through "in-the-mill" paint application under quality control conditions and (2) reduced "in-place" costs. Job studies show that, compared to conventional siding with prime and one coat applied on the job, there is a labor saving of 10 man hours per thousand squar.e feet

Calling for the attachment of roof trusses to cen- ter poles spaced 8' on center, the design features both a single and double type shed with roof spans of !4' and.28,, respectively.

Detailed in Teco's desiga are suggested fabricating and assembly methods including proced-ures for erecting trusses on poles. 'Western Wood Presewers Institute, a division of American Wood Preservers Institute, has issued a new parnphlet giving specifications for strapping Western species, pressure treated piling, and discussing how such strapping minimizes driving problems and allows more driving energfy.

The four-page leaflet discusses type o{ strap, type of clip, tools required, method of applying, location of strapping and when to apply. It reprints letters from several engineering and contracting firms relating their successful experience with banded piling under hard driving conditions.

Anchor Increoses Wind Resislonce ln Soufhern

A special framing anchor manufactured by Timber Engineering Company (Teco) is available to provide increased resistance to uplift resulting from winds blowing against roofs. Called the Teco Ty-Down, the pmduct is available in two sizes. Ty-Down Sr., is 1-9,/16" wide and 70Yeu long and is used for rafter to plate to stud anchorage where rafters or roof truss€s fall in line with the wall studs. Ty-Down, Jr., also measures l-9/16' in width but only 5%,, in length and is used in conjunction with the larger Ty-Down where the'rafter or truss does not fall in line with the stud.

Manufactured from 18 gauge galvanized steel, Teco Ty-Downs are supplied with special Ly2" long,.185" diameter hardened spiral shank nails for maximum shear value and resistance to withdrawal.

Two lengths of color-matched nails for use with Royalcote and Marbletone panels have been made available by Masonite Corporation in one-pound boxes.
