Crow's Lumber Price Index trounced up again in the period ending Aug. 22, reflecting the strong demand for hoards, dimension and studs in the past two weeks. Green Douglas fir, kiln-dried fir and western pine region species all shared in the rise. Plank and tim, bers were firmer. Many species have ,become scarce for prom'pt shipment and mills are booked well ahead with orders. Latest s'tatistics on production and orders indicate the market strength is based on heavy demand rather than lack of production, although logging shutdowns in western Oregon and Washington are a factor. ,Crow's said a current freig'hrt-car shortage, though not acut€, could add to the market strength fr'om buyers needing prompt shipment . Some producers of plywood sheathing are on a price-at-time-of-shipment basis for September and later.

Shipments of 472 rniils reporting to the National Lumber Manufacturers Assn. in the week ending Augus,t 16 were 1.7/o above produc, tion; o'rders shot 15.9/o above. National production o,f lumber in the year's first half totaled 15,443,000,000 board feet, estimated the NLMA. This is a decline of 9/o f.rcm t,he same 1957 period. Shipments were 7/o and orders 8/o below the same 1957 span. Gross mill stocks on hand were 6/o below year-ago levels. June 1958 production was 3/o below the previous June, with softwoods down 6Vo while hardwood output galned, l4Vo over June 1957 . . . Orders of 125,522,763 feet were 15.4/o above 'produc'tion at 155 mills repo, rting (141 operating) to the West Coast Lrmbermen's Assn.,in the week ending Aug. 16. The weekly avfrage of Douglas fir region sawmill production during July was 128,264,AAO feet; orders averaged 175,433,000 feet and shipments 149,459,000 fee,t S.hipments of 95,9'40,000 fee't were S.l/o above production at 119 mills reporting to the Western Pine Association in the week ended August 9; orders we,re 2.9/o above . Orders of 25,6,46,O00 feet were 24.35% above production at 9,4 mills reporting to the Southern Pine Association in the week ending August 16; shipments were 12.777o above.

IN THIS COLUMN many years ago there appeared a paragraph that caused a multitude of laughs and appears to justify its reprinting at this time. It said: "High authorities oppose the toothpick. But they also oppose grabbing both ends of an ear of sweet corn, and eating peas with a spoon, both of which are common-sense, comfortable practices. It may be that etiquette arbiters do not use toothpicks in public but indulge in them in the privacy of their own bailiwicks. It is cheerfully admitted that toothpicks can be dangerous and the user should employ judgment as he prods and searches for strings of ham and pot roast. Perhaps one shouldn't put both elbows on the table as he campaigns among the caves and crevices. It hasn't happened yet but any day now there ought to be a plastic toothpick on the market. Then a man could carry it in his vest pocket and have it ready whenever a*situation needs clearing up."

IT IS RELATED that an Englishwoman moving her home from London to India sent for a native electrician and gave him the job of wiring her house. She said to him: "Just go ahead and use common sense." And he gravely replied: "Madame, common sense is a rare gift of God. All I have is a technical education."

fn the year 1601 a thinker named Gracian wrote these wise words: "A shrewd man knows that others, when they seek him, do not seek him but seek rather their advantage in him and by him." * * *

And Ben Franklin said: "When you assemble a number of men to have the advantage of their joint wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those men all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests and their selfish views."

Richard Mansfield's reason for loving children is somewhat different from that of most folks. He said: 'iI love children. They do not prattle of yesterday, their interests are all of today and tomorrow. I love children !" {<X.*

PLENTY OF TALK about rackets here and there are found in the press these days, bringing to mind the famous four-liner: "In vain we call old notions fudge, and bend our conscience to our dealing; the 10 Commandments will not budge, and stealing will continue stealing."

A real smart guy named Seneca once said: "If we wish to be judges of all things, let us persuade ourselves of thisthat there is not one of us without fault: no man is found who can acquit himself ; and he who calls himself innocent does so with reference to a witness, and not to his conscience,"

AND THEN THERE WAS the proprietor of a local store who got a letter from a customer that read: "You have a big sign in your store that says 'We Aim to Please.' Well, all I've got to say is that you ought to spend a lot more time at target practice." ***

And then again there was the beauty parlor with a sign in the window that read: "Don't whistle at a girl leaving hsls-shs may be your grandma." ***

The late Lewis Browne, gifted lecturer and author, was blessed with the gift of fine phrases. In his great book, "This Believing World," he wrote of the various forms of religion old and new, and declared all this effort at religious education to be "A mighty draught for a mightier thirst." *!F*

Phillips Brooks left this fine thought for humans to mull over: "The ideal of life is in our blood, and never will be still. Sad will be the day for any man when he becomes contented with the thoughts he is thinking and the deeds he is doing; where there is not forever beating at the doors of his soul some great desire to do something larger, which he knows he was made and meant to do."

AND, IF YOU Sppf lo, " r**" in the facts concerning human ambitions, read over these words of that great thinker, Robert Louis Stevenson:

Dick Allen, a well-known lumber personage to Northern California retailers and wholesalers alike, celebrated the opening of his own retail yard-Allen's Lumber & Building Materials-with an open house for northern Marin county residents on Friday, July 25. The new yard is located at4142 Redwood Highway 101, just across the highway from the Terra Linda turnoff.

Dealer Allen selected the 3/4-acre site with a weather-eye to the Terra Linda tract settlement of some 8,000 people, all of whom must pass in front of the new yard when entering or leaving the subdivision.

More than 75 Bay area and Northland lumbermen braved the Ukiah Valley 100 degree-plus heat on Friday, July 25, to take in the Black Bart Hoo-Hoo Club's annual swim-golfbarbecue meet, held this year at Hollow Tree President Bill Moores's spacious Ukiah home. Club President Bud Crofoot, head of Crofoot Lumber Company, Ukiah. termed the evertt a huge success and a real boost to clrrb morale.

Crofoot paid special tribute to Committeemen Jim Hennessy, Jim Maher, Ed Gillespie, brother John and Elmer (Olives) Paclula for their hard work in coordinating the event.

At the top of the credits list was Bill Moores for generously turning'over his beautiful hillside grounds for the enjoyment of the gathering.

Earlier in the day, the more ardent golfers played a wringing-wet tournament on the Ukiah Golf and Country Club course, but after the first nine holes X4oores's "Swimming Hole" took on an adcled charm. Holvever, after a few hours of treating the external shell in Moores's pool and the inner self with an application of libations, everyone reviverl in line style. A barbecued steak dinner with all the trimmings rounded orrt the successful outing.

New U. 5. Plywood, Son Frqncisco Brqnch ls Showcqse of Fine Woods

Unitecl States Plyrvood Corporation has movecl into its rernarkable new San Francisco distribution center-a verv model of modern materials handling ancl, to the conrr, risseur of fir.re rvoods (what man who cleals in u'oocl is not?) ar.r installed display to which he ancl his cust<-rmers u'ill react like a live-year-old boy to a candy corlnter.

J. C. (Jack) I(aefer, Unite<l States Plyu.ood's San Fralrcisco manager, says the clecision t() rnove from the old building on Army street and builcl the new one at 100 Paul Avenue was made for two reasons :

1. To git'e customers the benefit of the very latest methods in speed and convetrience of handling orders; and ^

of the varicrus species of harrhvoocl plyu'oocl. Tl-rese racks are entirely_machine loarled, as opltosecl to liand loading in the fornter location.

2. To provide an ap1>ropriate showcase for the company's nne woocls.

Dealers are urged to bring in or send in their prospects. The United States Plywood inside sales staffthoroughly trained in the complete Weldwood line-is prepared to give prospective buyers a complete tour of the remarkable installation and provide them with literature and samples which will help the dealer make the sale.

The ner,r' clistributiorr center. covering 50,000 sclu:rre feet, was two years in the planning. Looking into the vastness of the 33,000 square-foot warehouse, the lirst thing r.vhich may in-rpress olcl customers of U.S. Plyu,oo<l's San Francisco branch is that it holds a substantially larger stock than the olrl builcling. New provisions have beer.r macle to stock certain items which are in particular demancl.

Tl-re old building, for example, clid not contain convenient provision for stocking long lengths. This has been solvecl by irrstallation of 220 feet of tree racks-an unusual feature in rvarehouses of this type-which will carry lengths np to 40 feet. In addition, the operation is ecluippecl u'ith 200 lineal feet of completely acljustable steel racks containing all

accustomed to the old warehouse: the entire operation is on ground level. There is a 10,000-foot truck ramp operations area, but if necessary the customer may drive his truck right into the warehouse.

Even the railroad loading platform is on ground level. This has been made possible by depressing the spur track to meet this elevation.

The added area has made possible a more convenient arrangement of stock, enabling the powerful fork-lift trucks to pick up and load the customer's order with substantially more speed and convenience.

The two-story office building attached to the warehouse was designed as a display of how United States Plywood paneling appears when installed. The woods which have been used range from the very finest and most exotic to the least expensive.

When the log was sliced the fli, tches were numbere{so that, when installed, each pdnel matched its neighbor. The paneling was especially manufactured at U.S. P1ywood's famed mill at Algoma, Wis.

Southern Cqlifornio Heqds for $3 Billion in t 958 Building

Southern California appeared headed for an almost certain new building record of $3 billion in 1958 as July building permits reached new record highs in both Los Angeles city and county. Permits for new county construction hit $165,072,000 in the month, a 20.4/o increase over the previous record hit in March 1956. A total of 5135 duplexes and multiple dwelling units were authorized in the county, and total residential valuation was 59/o above the same month last year, including increases of 61.5/o in new dwelling units, 2I.5% in single-dwelling units, and 86.1/o in duplex and multiple units, reported the L. A. Chamber of Commerce. The city's July total of. $79,751,579 was more than $13 million above the prior March 1953 peak. The July monthly figure this year topped any entire year's figures between 1930-38.

In 1958's first seven months. 79 Southern California cities launched $921,493,690 in new construction$138,783,349 above the same span last year. The 11 counties' unincorporated areas launched another $341,493,698 of new construction in this period. The grand total of $1,89,126,494 is the Southland's seven-months result.

Corporation's Weldwood prefinished paneling: "Feel the Difference."

The new promotion will be sparked by a display for lumber dealers' showrooms featuring a woman's hand of plastic moving back and forth over a surface of Korina wall paneling. The legend on the panel reads: "Feel the Difference. The Weldwood Furniture Finish protects its beauty." Current for the motor which moves the hand is piovided by an ordinary flashlight battery. R. S. Lowell, U. S. Plywood director of advertising and promotion, pointed out that the impulse to test the feeling of beautiful hardwood finishes is almost irresistible, although largely unconscious. "But we know for sure," he said, "that the sense of touch as well as his sense of sight can tell the customer that he is buying a superior product."

Roger Mockin Assigned to Hallinon Mqckin's Eoslern Scrles

In line with the expansion of its eastern sales department, Hallinan Mackin Lumber Co., Inc., has added Roger Mackin to the division to assist L. J. "Larry" Owen, manager of eastern sales at San Francisco.

Mackin, a Stanford graduate and Ray Mackin's oldest son, was transferred to San Francisco headquarters from Hallinan Mackin's Los Angeles office, where he had been active in outside sales. Prior to joining the organization, Mackin served two years in Germany as a lieutenant.

E. J. Stonfon & Son to Hold Red Tqg Exponsion Sole-Open House

Stan Swafford, vice-president for sales of E. J. Stanton & Son, Inc., Los Angeles wholesale lumber firm, announces a four-day Open House will be held at the Vernon plant starting September 3 and continuing through Saturday, September 6, to reduce the hardwood and softwood inventory prior to the move to the new concentration yard at Dominguez Junction near Compton.

"In our effort to make this a trulv worthwhile sale to our customers and friends, we have purchased the quartermillion dollar stock of Tropical & Western Lumber Company, and these choice hardwoods will be included in the stock we offer," Swafford declared.

The Stanton firm intends moving during December and January and will try to sell all lumber on hand at the Vernon yard prior to that time, it was said.

Invitations are now in the mail for the four-day Red Tag clearance sale, during which continuous entertainment will be scheduled, along with beautiful hostesses who will serve refreshments and buffet lunch to the guests. At that time announcement will also be made regarding the branch yard locations E. J. Stanton & Son intends to open in the greater Southern California trade area.

This pioneer wholesale concern has plans to open service yards for both hardwoods and softwoods in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and other southland cities and communities, according to Swafford.

Participation in the immense "Food Comes First" exhibit at the California State Fair and Exposition, August 27 through September 7, has spread from food and allied industries to lumbermen. According to George Randall, University of California visual aids specialist and display coordinator, The Pacific Lumber Company of San Francisco contributed 4,000 board feet of l-reart stock redwood toward the building of the exhibit.

The display, designed by University of California Architecture Professor Philip Thiel, occupies over 10,000 square feet in the Merchandise Mart building and is composed of a series of walk-in, free standing redwood screens and booths, with a large central stage ancl kitchen for demonstrations, a central informatior-r booth, and a garden rest area.

The Insulation Board Institute, Chicago, announces that perforated insulation board tile sales to retailers in the first quarter of 1958 rose l5/o above the comparable 1957 cryarter, wlrich had soared 33/a above those of the previous year. Last year's increase came at a time when sales of homebuilding materials in general declined 1.2o/o becatse of fewer housing starts.

Production figures of all types of insulation board (sheatl-ring, building board, shingle backer, decorative interior tile and plank, roof insulation and insulating roof deck slab) show a 9.8/o decrease in output from 1956 to 1957, reflecting the decline in tl-re housing market, but recent monthly shipment reports indicate industry production now is on the increase.

Your Lumber Journol

Ever think of this-as you sit down and prepare to read the latest issue of your lumber journal?

If you should get but one good suggestion, if you should receive just one good idea from your lumber journal in the course of a whole year's reading, 24 issues; if you should get the germ of a single thought that resulted in helping you or your business in any way-you would be well repaid for your year's reading and the subscription price. bonds of common interest that hold together those engaged in the same line of business. And if you grab and hold just one useful plan or idea in a year's time, then your lumber journal has paid its way.

AS A MOUTHPIECE FOR THE INDUSTRY, the trade journal holds a position second only to the regularly organized associations in the industry, and likewise vocalizes those associations.

AS A NEWS MEDIUM, /our lumber journal eliminates all matter foreign to your industry and to the territory served, and gives you the selected news of your fellow lumbermen and of the industry at large.

AS AN ADVERTISING MEDIUM, your lumber journal concentrates in its pages the business notices of sources of supply from which you can draw your goods and supplies.

So your lumber journal grows better and more useful as the industry grows older, and plays an ever-increasing part in the lumber drama.

San Francisco. The Southern Pacific R. It was declared that the discriminatorv rates were set up in 1954 to attract Northerir California business away from truckers but they did not reverse the declining rate of intrastate traffic, which dropped by 8,600 cars a year between 1954 and 1957 as Oregon shippers turned more and more to truck and ship. Truckers were also expected to present testimony against the proposed freight rate changes as the hearings continued into press time.

[u-Re-Co Building System Goining New Deqler Members Sreodily

Details on the licensing agreement for manufacturerdealers of the Lu-Re-Co system of homebuilding and the important new Federal Housing Administration engineering bulletin are incorporated in an informational folder just released by the Lumber Dealers Research Council. Copies of the folder have been mailed to over 1300 current Lu-ReCo members and to 13,000 "prospective members," according to Council President Clarence A. Thompson of Champaign, I1l. The folder, which also is being sent to all regional F.H.A. offices, incorporates important decisions reached at the May meeting of the Lumber Dealers Research Council directorate in Washington, D. C.

The Lu-Re-Co system of manufacturing modular building components has been gaining new members steadily among retail lumber dealers throughout the

country. The new agreement licenses lumber dealers for the manufacture and sale of Lu-Re-Co components (exterior wall panels, interior partitions, and roof trusses), in three categories. These are: manufacturerdistributor, manufacturer-dealer, and dealer.

The F.H.A. Engineering Bulletin, published recently, details firm standards of quality in determining the accept- ability for mortgage insurance of houses constructed in accordance with the Lu-Re-Co system.

"All Lu-Re-Co comoonent units must conform to the F.H.A. Engineering Bulletin standards," says Mr. Thompson, "to receive the Lumber Dealers Research Council's Shield of Approval." This means assured quality for manufacturers, dealers and customers, with jobi which will pass F.I{.A. and other requirements, including local codes, with much greater speed."

The Lu-Re-Co Service Association will handle all details in the licensing of retail lumber dealers as Lu-Re-Co dealers and the distribution of the identifying Shield of Approval which will be attached to every component which meets the standards set forth. The association will also disseminate information concerning research and development in reduction of housing costs and will promote the use of improved methods in housing construction.

Demqnd Puts Mosonite Sunline Siding On Msrket Two Yecrrs Aheod of Time

A striking new pattern for exterior walls, which appea-r-ed experimentilly inlhe research house sponsored by t1t9-N?tional Association of Home Builders at Kensington, Md., is being. introduced west of the Rockies by Masonite Corporatlon. ^

Masonite Sunline siding-an industry first, that is distinctive for the preformed integral ribs that appear in the panels at either 4' or 8" intervals-generated much favorable comment from builders and architects who observed it in the NAHB research house.

In addition to the vertical ribs at {' intervals, as they appeared in Kensington, Masonite Corporation is providing the 4-foot-wide panils also with rib spacing of E'. There is no differential in price between the two styles of rib spacing. The first style has ribs l3f" wide on 4.265" centers, or 11 ribs to a panel. The other style, considered more conservative, has ribs 2" wide on 8' centers, or six to the panel.

Thickness of both panels is 5fI6", with f" thickness at the ribs, raising them 3/16'above the surface of the board.

Completely liidden joints are a feature appealingrto builders and prospective homeowners alike. They fall adjacent to the ribs and are shiplapped to provide a weather-tight joint. Inside corners of the iibs have a small fillet, while outside corners are slightly rounded. These features are reported to give top applarince and provide excellent paint-holding characteristics.

Masonite Sunline Siding may be applied directly to studs on 2{' centers. Installed in that manner, without sheathing, the ribbed hardboard siding has racking strength .*ssgd'ing the minimum requirements set by the FHA. Extra vertical strength is given these panels by the ribs.

Long an accepted exterior style, vertical lines heretofore have had to be installed on the job as battens in a time-consuming, expensive application. In Sunline siding, company executives observed, this popular styling is available in strong', durable and uniform panels that can be erected quickly at a saving in application costs. The FHA has accepted the product.

Sunline siding may be applied vertically or horizontally over sheathing or directly to open studs. Lumber dealers will have it in lengths of 7' to 16'.

Masonite Corporation executives said their interest was so pressing- that the original product was refined and readied for production ahead of the intended 1960 date.

Winton lumber Compony Building Plywood Plqnt qt Martell' Cqlif.

The Winton Lumber Company, Martell, California, broke ground August 6 for the construction of a plywood plant. This plant will produce Douglas fir and western softwood plywood. It is estimated that the plant will be completed late in the spring or summer of 1959. This is one more move by the company to better use the resources of the forest in a broader and more intense way and, at the same time, to develop a wider list of forest products to serve the company's customers.

The plant is being designed, built and will be managed by Jack Rushton, former superintendent of the plywood division of the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company at Longview, Washington. In this work he is being assisted by Merle Dodd, who formerly aided in the planning and de-

signing of the U. S. Plywood Company plant at Roseburg, Oregon.

Rosenbeny Steps Down ot Winton

The directors of Winton Lumber Company announced August 7 with great regret that John M. Rosenberry is leaving the organization after 26 years of service. Rosenberry had been manager of the company's Idaho operation, executive vice-president and director of Winton Lumber Company, and president of Winton Lumber Sales Company (Calif.). His leaving was called a significant loss.

For a number of years Tohn Rosenberrv had wanted to develop his own activity bul continued under persuasion and a sense of duty to Winton Lumber Company. The directorsownersemployes of the Winton Lumber Company wished him success in something he has wanted to undertake for some time. He will continue to act as a director and vice-president of Winton Lumber Company.

NRLDA Regionql Associqtion Xlonogers Will Rein 1958 Erposition Progroms

Eight critical areas of dealer interest are slated for discussion at the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association's 1958 Building Products Exposition to be held in Chicago, November 22-25.

"Every session of the program will be sharpened to point directly at the heart of the problem under attack," Program Chairman Deyo W. Johnson announced following a meeting of the 1958 Exposition Committee in Chicago. Setting the theme for the four-day program at the traditional "Kick-off Breakfast" on Saturday, November 22, opening day of the Exposition, an address by one of the industry's topJevel executives will emphasize today's need for more aggressive merchandising by the

retailer to expand and strengthen building material markets.. Other sessions following the same vein will cover the "howto" of better creative salesmanship, merchandising kitchens and related items, how to sell more home improvements with the accent on positive selling points to keep this business from being pirated by fly-by-night applicators, case histories of successful competition against prefabs, and how to step up sales to farmers.

A new method of program development is also being utilized in the organization of dealer meetings of the 1958 Exposition, Chairman Johnson revealed. At the invitation.of the Eiposition committee, executive secretaries of eight state and iegional associations are assisting the committee as program managers of the various sessions.

"Our Federated Assn. managers constitute a tremendous resource for efrective organization and management of dealer meetings," Mr. Johnson said. "It has been our feeling for some time that this wealth of experience and knowhow should be put to work for the benefit of all our members throueh the programs of our National Exposition

,

"In past meetings dealer chairmen have willingly shouldered the burden of program management along with the demands of chairmanship, often at the expense of their responsibilities to their own businesses. Benefits of the new svstem are alreadv in evidence because Program l\{anagers, woiking with NRLDA headquarters, have been able to relieve Dealer Chairmen of many problems by resolving in advance details of organizing and coordinating Exposition programs."

Jack Pomeroy, executive vice-president of the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California, San Francisco, will handle program arrangements for a Sunday "family brunch" which will feature one of the nation's most dynamic speakers on creative salesmanship.

Charged with setting up the program on kitchen merchandising is Edwin F. Sembell, secretary of the Illinois Lumber and Material Dealers Association. The session dealing with how to sell more home improvements is under the management of Horace G. Pierce, managing director of the Northeastirn Retail Lumbermen's Association, Rochester, N. Y. The program based on case histories of successful competition against prefabs is being developed by Charles E,. Benson, executive vice-president of the Ohio Association of Retail Lumber Dealers. Robert L. Craft, executive secretary of the Indiana Lumber and Builders Supply Association, is developing a new and effective format for the program on personnel management. Donald J. Moe, secretary of the Michigan Retail Lumber Dealers Association, is setting up the session on the outlook for the building materials industry, and a sales-centered program to take advan-age of the present strong farm market is under development by G. Kenneth Milliken, executive vice-president of the Southwestern Lumbermen's Association, Kansas City, Missouri. 'fheodore I. Hunsaker, executive secretary of the Lumber Trade Association of Cook County, Chicago, is progra- manager for the Saturday rnorning Kick-off Breakfast.

cated pool. These side panels, the National Lumber Manufacturers Association points out, keep costs of installation down.

Initial material costs have been cut and high labor charges eliminated through the use of prefabricated units and the wood side panels. All parts and fittings for the pool, including pump, filter and a supply of chemicals, come with the kit.

When installed, the pool measures 16 feet by 32 feet, twice the size of the average living room. In five easy steps it can be readied for swimming. After the excavation has been dug, the first step is to assemble and bolt together the lumber side panels in position around the pool.

When the panels are in, grade the bottom of the pool from 3f feet at the ends to 7l feet at the center for diving purposes.

The third step : install a vinyl plastic liner and then connect the pump and filter. Before filling the pool with water, backfill the pool sides.

Then fill the pool with water, dive in and enjoy your swim. Later they can add an umbrella, table, chairs, terrace or wood deck, diving board and ladder to provide an indi-

CRA Stqrts New Lumber Groding Series of Redwood Schools in Stqte

Cal-Pacific Redwood Company. Other schools will be presented throughout the Redwood Region as requested by interested companies subscribing to the Redwood Inspection Service.

Company grading schools are conducted by RIS inspectors as a, part of their regular services to subscriber mills. The schools consist of four or five evening classes, ea"ch two hours long. The classes are designed as a refresher course for graders, trimmermen, edgermen and sawyers, Talvola said. Purpose of the schools is to raise quality standards and to integrate grading policies of redwood lumber companies.

The company refresher grading course is an offshoot of the community grading schools sponsored in the region for several years by redwood mills and the California Redwood Association.

Socromento Box Compony Closed

A new series of redwood lumber grading schools is being conducted for subscriber companies by the Redwood fnspection Service of the California Redwood Association, according to Ralph Talvola, RIS chief inspector. Erio Giuntini, member of the RIS inspectors staff, is conducting the first of the company grading schools at the Blue Lake yard of

5,OOO June Housing Stqils

The preliminary estimate of 115,000 new nonfarm dwelling units started in June is 15,100 units more than June a year ago, and 10,000 units above the May figure. The 530,400 units started the first six months of itriJ year is 16,800 units more than the same six months last year, reports the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association.

June Nonfarm Housing Starts

Highest for Month Since 1955

Secretary of Labor lames P. Labor James P. Mitchell said that, according to preliminary estimates of the U. S. Labor Departmentt Department's

Bureau of Labor Statistics, the June figure was I5/o above a year earJ!,e_r and was the highest total for any month since August 1955. Privately owned starts alone -increased 7Vo from May !o 104,500 in June-the best monthly figure in two years. Seasonally adjusted, private starts in June were at an annual rate of 1,090,000, the highest since August 1956, and was 19/o above the 9- JO, an(] was ry"/o aDove tne y-year low ot last -hebrua

At the end of the first half of 1958. the total of 530 February. 8, of 530.400

new houses and apartments put under construction was 3Vo more _than the 513,600 units begun in the comparable l95Z period. This year's private total (494,400 units) was about 2/o above_the figure for the first half of 1957. Housing begun with Government-backed mortgage assistance hai been accounting for the stronger activity in private starts during recent months, although for the first six months as a whole, conventionally financed units in 1958 accounted Ior 7O/o of the private total, or about the same as a year earlier.

Final figures for the first three months of 1958 show a continuation of the upturn in the number of units begun in multifamily buildings, for which the trend was generillv downward from 1950 until1957. The number of nJw ^p^ri- ment u-nits begun in the first quarter of 1958 ,epres&ted 17/o of the^starts-t^otll compared with I2/o in the first quarter of.1957, and9/o in the same period of'1955 and 1956.

M. C. "Doc" Whire Ends Four Deccldes In Lumber Wifh Refirement

One of the western lumber industry's better-known lumbermen, Millard "Doc" White, general manager of Christenson Lumber ComDany in San Francisco. announced his re-, tirement August -15.- Succeeding him as manag'er of the Christenson yard will be Hugh Vella, who joined the Christenson organization many years ago from the J. R. Hanify Lumber Co.

Millard, better known as "l)oc" to his many friends, is a true lumberman of the first order. A native of Denver, he received his start over four decades ago with Hallack & l{oward Lumber Co. there. He later went to work for McPhee & N{cGinty Lumber Company, a large Wyoming lineyard outfit, but in 1923, like a lot of other young men, "Came West" to San Jose, where he became assistant auditor of Sunset Lumber Company. After several years with the Sunset organization and its successor, Tilden Lumber Company, Doc went to work for McElroy-Cheim Lumber Company. Ile remained with that firm until the mid-30's when it became two separate operations-McElroy Lumber Company and Cheim Lumber Company.

Doc then moved to Oakland to take over as assistant manager of Bay City Lumber Co., Inc. He remainecl with that concern over eight years until, one day during the war

years, he was offered the Christenson Lumber Company managership.

Besides being a top-notch lumberman, Doc has excelled in his hobbies (golf and breeding dogs) too ! A current low handicapper and director of Dubs, Ltd., the Bay Area lumbermen's golf organization, Doc has a roomful of trophies he captured in his younger years-among them trophies for winning the Wyoming Open in 1921, and the Denver City Championship in 1916 and 1917. His other hobby (breeding fine dogs) has earned plenty of trophies for those shelves, too. Doc's canines have won ribbons and trophies in numerous shows throughout the Western states. At present, he is especially interested in raising Scottish terriers.

So, between raising dogs and playing golf (both strictly for pleasure .9*), tending t-o his Oakland home and devoting an increasing amount of time to the securities market, Doc will still manage to work a full day, and then some, just as he has done all his life.

TfT Finds lt's All in the Rules

The 386th Terrible Twenty tournament was held at Wilshire Country Club, July 22. Dewey Reeder was our host and kept a very close watch on all dice boxes. We had a large turnout, with eight guests. It was a big day.

Dewey Reeder was also the day's winner in the lower bracket with 77-9-68, and Curt McFadden was low man in the higher bracket with 90-17-71. The 2-stroke penalty for each win has been extended to winners of the current year rather than the past six months, to get a better distribution oI pflzes.

Harry Whittaker presided at our dinner meeting and Frank Berger distributed the loot for last yeat's annual prizes-silver chafing dishes, silver trays, silver candelabras -goneare the goblets and ash trays (along with two dollar green tees).

The Most Terrible announced that from now on, in our tournaments there is no two-stroke oenaltv: for out of bounds-one stroke. I think he is going to lei us lift out of sand traps-some of them have Monterey sand and some don't, and it's unfair ! In fact, Harry should publish his new U.S.G.A. rules immediately and we hackers can all have fun.

Monterey Tournament Planned

The 387th Terrible Twenty Tournament was held at Virginia Country Club, August 8. Rex Wall lvas our host and he brought up a light breeze for the afternoon but had the rough grown up so high it was murder. There were no low scores and the wailing was terrific. The winners for the day were Wall, even with his penalty handicap (78-72-74), and a three-wav tie in the lower bracket between Bohnhoff, Clary Morris, and Virg Oliver, all with net 76's. Burt Galleher, a former member, was a guest of Wall.

Our October tournament at Monterey is set tentatively for Thursday and Friday, October 23 and 24. Cards will be sent out for reservations. Guests and wives, as usual, with the ladies playing at Pebble Beach. Please return them promptly, even if tentative.

The penalty strokes for winning monthly prizes was established to extend for twelve months, with two strokes for each prize, effective next month.

Our next tournament will be at Bel Air, set for Thursday, September 11, with Falconer as host.

In applications as jois,t hangers for framing floor and ceiling joists to headers, the anchor grips both ,headers, provid, ing a stron'ger connection. Both plates are also gripped in anchoring roof rafters securely against high velocity winds. Used in wall fra, rning, Du-AlCl'ips provide a rigid joint tyin'g he entire structure together against racking and upli,f,t forces.

A special "p're-firt" projection on the tr'iangular flange of the fram, ing c,lip speeds installation by permitting the anchor to be "tacked" in place prior to nailing. Du-AlClips c'ome complete wi,th special nails, and require no bendin,g or twisting before being put to use.

The framing cli,p eliminates toe-nailing, strap hangers, ndtohing and ledger stripping, and is economical for roof, floor atrd ceiling and wall framing, as well as stud to concrete connections.

Of popular redwood style, basket-weave ty,pe, th'i,s fence is unique in that sect'io'ns are fabricated from /s" thick exterior-type plywood, 4 1 $l panels. agreed upon a full-scale, national promotion campaign. -

-"This million dollar effort will spearhead and tie together the various species and brand-name merchandising programs now being conducted by our regional associati-ons ind individual maanufacturers at a cost of some $5 million annually," Doyle added.

Climaxing a two-day meeting in San Francisco, the committee approved policies and budgets for the program to include:

1. Advertising in national consumer and trade publications.

2. Preparation of special booklets, product publicity and other promotional material.

3. An expanded technical promotion field staff to work with architects, engineers, building code officials, contractors and other bulk consumers of lumber and wood products.

4. A special effort to encourage increased promotional activities on the part of wood product and equipment industries closely allied to the lumber industry. The ultimate objective of this project would be to have all elements of all'industries dep6ndent upon the sale of lumber and wood products join in one unified national promotional effort.

- Advertising and promotional material will stress wood's many advantages over competitive materials, including its strength, beaufy and versatility. This theme will be directed toward persons who design, specify, build and buy structures and products made of wood.

Stepped-up technical promotion will be designed to-s.timulate lncreased interest and a better understanding of lumber and wood products among the building trades. Another objective will be the removal of building code restrictions against wood.

-Other phases of the technical promotion effort will involve ths development and distribution of technical literature and data on the performance of wood, and the education of student architects and engineers.

Operating under the full 35-man National Wood Promotion-commiltee is a special nine-man Executive committee and three subcommittees. Hood is chairman of the Executive committee. Johnson-Floherty Custom-Designed Storoge Rqcks lnstolled ln New Horbor Plyvood Worehouse, U.S. Plywood Bronches

New Equipment Finds R.eody Acceptonce With Distributors, R.etoil Deolers

The most recent addition to the Johnson-Flaherty, Inc., custom-designed storage racks have been installed-in the new warehouse facility of Harbor Plywood Corporation at 2800,Supply Ave., T e5 Angeles. John T. Northam, manager of Harbor Plywood's Southern California branch, said iegarding the installation :

"We at the Los Angeles branch of Harbor Plywood Corporation, were first introduced to the >oration, the Tohnson-Flahertv tree rack' about two years ago. I felt this was not onl| v an innovation, but was truly the answer to the terrific storage and handling problems we all face, in the wholesale distribution of plywood. A number of units were installed in the three-level type and they have exceeded all of our expectations. Last month we moved to our new building located in the eastside industrial district, adiacent to thE Santa Ana Freeway, and we have increased our inventory capacity by the installation of the four-level type Johnson-

Johnson-Flaherty, and their engineering help in adapting proper racks to our ideas and requirements has been excellent," Smales declared.

Don Braley, Southern California district manager for U.S. Plywood, adds this about these all steel units: "We certainly would not hesitate to recommend JohnsonFlaherty to any of our friends who have requirements for storage racks, because we know from experience that Jack Flaherty is a man who knows his business."

And, "In today's selective market, we are able to furnish the proper storage racks to do the proper job for the plywood and lumber industry," declares Jack Flaherty.

It was in 1946 that Luke lohnson and I. M. "Tack" Flaherty established their manufacturing .oi..rtt for the

Flaherty racks at this new location. These custom racks simplify storage, increase 'floor space,' reduce cost of handling, minimize damage and, of greatest importance to our customers, permit the correct storage of materials."

According to Fred Smales, vice-president and western re-

nccorqrng' ri reo )mates, vlce-preslcent anq fegional manager of United States Plywood Corporation, his firm has installed Tohnson-Flahertv tree racks in ware- installed Johnson-Flaherty tree racics warehouses at Eugene, Oregon; San Francisco, Santa Ana, San Diego, Glendale, Culver City, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, Arizona.

business, received his start in the business back in Chicago with the Alexander Lumber Company during early 1945. In 1946, Allen and his growing family moved to Napa, California, where he took a job with Hammond Lumber Company in its purchasing department.

During the following ten years he was with the Hammond organization, Dick rose to managerial capacity and, finally, was put in charge of purchasing for the big retail chain ooeration.

When lfammond Lumber was sold to Georgia-Pacific Corp, and the northern retail division subsequenlly resold to Henry F. $,q,Lng IDEA$ HOIIDAY HOUSE O " o new vocotion home-on-wheels

For $30 worth of materials, a pattern, and a.few weekends' work-anyone can build a traveling vacation home. Called the "Holiday House," 'this new mobile dwelling is not a tent, not a house-trailerbut an easv-tobuild bunkhouse to be mounted on a pick-up truck or trailer. It's ideal for weekends, for hunting and fishing trips, and even for cross-country traveling. This modern version of the covered wagon has all the comforts of a housekeeping unit.

The Holiday House is made of Homasote Building Boards and lx2 lumber-with the help of Easi- Bild Pattern *594. All materials are listed on this building pattern -and all materials are standard lumberyard items.

The pattern simplifies construction with full-scale patterns of angled and curved saw cuts. The pattern is specifically designed for the amateur builder, from the drawings to the instructions. Homasote Board forms a weatherproof "skin"which also insulates against heat and cold.

One'of the surprising features of the Holiday House is that it can be knocked down into five component parts for easy storing when not in use. It takes only 45 minutes to assemble and mount on a pick-up truck or trailer. This feature makes it economical to rent a trailer for a short trip, if a truck or trailer is not otherwise available. The Holiday House is designed for various truck bodies and trailer sizes, so that construction is not a makeshift proposition.

More money is spent in vacation buying than at any other time of the year, except Christmas. The Holiday Ifouse offers the ultimate in economy to today's cautious consumer. When all the features of this mobile dwelling are seen it sells itself twin side bunks, side windows, curved roof, combination back-door and full canopy.

Lumber dealers can build models of the Holiday House and feature the Easi-Bild Pattern #594. Materials already in stock are sold with each pattern. Truck dealerships and trailer rental agencies can use Holiday }Iouse for promotional purposes and for profitable rentals.

Pattern #594 may be ordered for $2.00 direct from Easi-Bild Pattern Company, Pleasantville, New Yor!' A complete 64-page catalog of F,asi-Bild Patterns showiig more ihan 300 do-ityourself projects is also available for 35c.

The new Four Directional Electric Tiering Truck designed to transport lorng loads through a wide main aisle and rnove sideways into a narrow storage aisle is d'escribed in a new bulletin now being distributed by The Raymond Corporation. Conplete specifications, suggested applications and photos showing the truck in use are included in the literature. W.rite to The Raymond C,orporation, 76168 M.adison Street, Greene, New York, for free copy.
