The interest and concern of science regarding the fire problem were indicated when the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council conducted a four week study in 1961. Engineers, scientists, and fire experts assembled at the National Academy's summer facility at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. An outstanding group of urban and forest fire specialists presented a one week briefing to the fulltime participants. The findings of studies like this will continue to reveal more about the phenomenon of fire behavior. Fire prevention will continue to keep pace with the population growth. Had these men not recognizld forty years ago that forest protection was the first essential step towards the establishment and Dreservation of our natural resourcas. we could not now look forward with confidence to receiving a fuller enjoyment and greater prosperity from the wildlands of California.

May the next forty years be even more fruitful.
