78 Plants on Pacific Coast Producing Record Amount of Plywood

As this special Plywood Issue of THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT goes to press, 78 plywood plants on the Pacific Coast, under pressure of a "mighty thirst" for the product, are making plywood at a rate never before dreamed of. As one manufacturer reported, the mills are cutting every foot they can possibly produce, fitting their production plans to the market, and turning out a maximum quantity of most favorable items.

The Douglas Fir Plywood Association estimates at this moment that the 1950 production lvill reach a grand total of.2,200,000,000 square feet, as compared with 1,899,000,000 square feet for 1949, 1,9@,000,000 for 1948, and 1,630,000,0AO for 1947.

There are 10 plywood plants in operation in California, and one under construction and nearly ready to start. Four are Pine plants, one produces both Fir and Pine, 5 are strictly Fir producers, and one more Fir plant is under construction. There are 35 Plywood plants in Washington, 25 in Oregon, and 8 in British Columbia. Two of the B. C. plants are very small, one started just recently. British Columbia production for the past year totaled 312,458.000 feet.

Redwood plywood is being made at only one plant, that of the M and M Wood Working Company, at Eureka, California.

One interesting California plywood development is shown by the report of Shasta Plywood Inc., at Anderson, (Post Office at Redding) that it is now making a large part of its board from California Sugar Pine. Heretofore only incidental quantities of plywood have been made from that tree.
