In the things r read ;J ,l* , keep on discovering that this man J. Edgar Eloover is more than a great detective; he is a splendid thinker and philosopher. The other day I read an article he recently wrote about human conduct, and the above from the*Bible was his text.

In his writing he said in the simplest words that the essentials of human decency and good conduct are three: justice, mercy, and humility. That, with the scriptural text above, seems to make "**t*tnat fine little sermon.

Of his three essentials it seems to me that the third is the foremost-humility. For unless a man possesses that, he is unlikely to be highly merciful, or unusually just. Humility. is certainly one of the brightest stars in the crown of human virtues.*

No man ever is truly great who is not humble. Without it, his other useful characteristics will be of lesser value. Vanity and egotism can find no place where humility lives. The chief reason why every world thinker has listed Lincoln among the world's all-time great, is because he was the most humble of men. It was his unbelievable egotism and immeasurable vanity that made me so thoroughly dislike Roosevelt.

Words of practical wisdom fell recently from the lips of Emil Schram, president of the New York Stock Exchange. Ffe was speaking to a western audience, and he said: "The United States cannot live by bootstraps alone. Someone must make the dollar to give someone else for social benefits. And the government is a very poor businessman, as well as a very poor middle*:".;

ffe was trying to give sensible advice to people who look more and more to the government for everything, and who fail to understand that the government produces nothing. When he said that the government is a poor businessman, he sure said a mouthful. In all its invasions of business, government has proven inefficient, impractical, wasteful. and unsucc.""t;t. * *

Unemployment lists are growing, according to government reports. But don't forget THIS; unemployment doesn't always mean what it did during the early thirties. In those days an unemployed man was generally a man

willing and anxious to work, who couldn't find decent employment to feed himself and his family. IIe wasn't choosy. He was hungry.

*

To a very large extent the unemployed we see listed today are in no such desperate straits. The unemployment figures are taken mostly from the unemployment compensation rolls and listings, and a large part of them are not desperate, hungry, or willing to take any decent employment. They, perhaps, haven't folrnd exactly the kind of work they are accustomed to, and with unemployment pay available, they are not forced to take what comes. Tens of thousands of men on the unemployment rolls are driving their own cars, and living well. I know lots of such. This is NOT a criticism. They are complying. with the law, and would be foolish not to take the compensation. But the word "unemployment" doesn't necessarily mean a hungry or desperate man as it often did in days gone by.

Brannan has declared bluntly that unless we spend the money to keep the farmers prosperous we will have the doggondest depression in this country that anyone ever heard of. Thinking this, he feels that no sacrifice on the part of the rest of the population for fattening the farmer and keeping him fat, is too great, and should be accepted calmly and dutifully. "Our great productive power makes possible the biggest surpluses, the most colossal waste, and the greatest economic crash the world has ever seen," he is quoted as saying. * * *

Let us pass the question of whether or not Secretary Brannan is to be accepted as a qualified prophet or authority on depressions. Taking him at his own estimate' we find that a new and entirely self-appointed prophet has arisen in our midst crying "Hear Ye ! Hear Ye !" Mayhap, like the seer in Scott's "Lady of the Lake," something unknown to us "gives him mystical lore, and coming events cast their shadows before." ***

At any rate, we hear him propounding an entirely new philosophy of economics that is startling in its sirnplicity. The long and short of it is that the rest of this nation must dig into its pockets to fatten the .farmers and keep them fat, regardless of how deep or difficult or painful that digging may become. One thing we must admit with regard to his theory; it's the simplest doctrine of economics ever preached. You don't need trained economists to handle it. Any apple-cheeked farm boy can do it. The fact that furnishing Cadillacs for the tillers of the soil may have the

effect of putting the rest of the nation on foot, is something that seems not to enter into this prospectus.

{<{<*

There are a million good objections to this plan of Mr. Brannan-together with all the smaller plans includedbut the chief and strongest one is that if we went through with it, shortly thereafter there would be nothing but farmers left in this country. Would anyone be sucker enough to follow any other calling? And thus we would soon adopt as our national anthem that dear old ditty"The Farmer's Life is the Life for Me," and quit straining our voices trying to reach the high notes of "The Star Spangled Banner." The day his plan is adopted would be hey-dey and holiday for the makers of overalls and rakes. We'd all buy 'em.

And now farewell for the time to Pied Piper Brannan, and return to Mr. Schram, whom I quoted earlier in this piece. He says that this country cannot live by bootstraps alone. But there are evidently many millions of Americans who are willing to try, and to hell with what happens next, and "the devil take the hindermost." A New York businessman, Mr. Robert Byfield, recently opened up and spoke a mouthful when he said in a public statement:

,kd<*

"The hue and cry for the welfare state is being stepped up week after week to a crescendo, but, of course, if the rich are going to carry the poor, the well carry the sick, the young carry the old, the landlords carry the tenants, the employed carry the jobless, someone is going to have to foot the bill. As the British experience is definitely proving, the high bracket taxpayer simply cannot carrv the load. Social welfare inevitably costs more than was estimated in advance, and there is no one to carry the man with venture capital except the sheriff and undertaker."

President Roosevelt rtJq"J",fl used the term "the forgotten man" to describe the man at the bottom of the economic ladder. That term was invented in 1883 by Proi. Wm. Graham Sumner, of Yale University, and the statement of which it is a part should be immortalized. Right today it should hang prominently on the walls of Congress. Here is what Prof. Sumner said:

"Wealth comes orly fi**prld.r"tion, and all that the wrangling grabbers, loafers, and jobbers get to deal with comes from somebody's toil and sacrifice. Who, then, is he who provides it aU? The Forgotten Man, delving away in patient industry, supporting his family, paying his taxes, casting his vote, supporting the church and school. But he is the only one for whom there is no provision in the great scramble and big divide. Such is the Forgotten Man. fle works, he votes, generally he praysbut he always pays. All the burdens fall on him or on her; for the Forgotten Man is not seldom a woman."

Wouldn't it be a -t"uJrr,i iJ"" ir we could have a big banner made and get it hung prominently in the front of both the Senate and the llouse in Washington, bearing the words of Prof. Sumner, and reading something like this: "Remember that every dollar you are planning to waste 'COMES FROM SOMEBODY'S TOIL AND

SACRIFICE.'" I make that as a motion. Do I hear a second?

As this is written they are wrangling in Washington over the number of billions of dollars of taxpayers' money we will give Europe for recovery for the coming year. Some want to start cutting it down-this huge giveaway that asks not even an IOU in return. The government objects to saving a nickel in this direction. With no intent of arguing either side of the controversy, let me offer THIS suggestion with which, I believe, you will agree: that whenever we DO start reducing the Europesn €X. pense account, it will be over the same stern objections and objectors that are in evidence today. Neither next year nor in the years to come will Britain, or France, or any other recipient of our bounty ever agree that they can get along with less. Neither will our spenders in Washington ever make a move to reduce it. Of those things I am dead sure. Some day we MUST start taking the nations of Europe-and the rest of the world-off the sore backs of the American taxpayers, and when we succeed it will be after we have won a stern battle. These things, like bureaus, never change, never reduce. So, don't let the fact that loud cries against cutting down the Eirropean expense account rend the skies affect your judgment of the matter. It's always going to be that waY.

And so, to follow c.orl" ir. lon"rr'. wise injunction to "always leave them laughing when you say goodby," let us tell a swell little story about a great American, the late General Pershing. At the end of world war one he was b,esieged with offers for making money in many ways. A vaudeville agent offered him a fortune to appear on the stage. He put it in writing. Then he called on the General and asked: "Have you entertained my proposition?" Pershing grinned and replied: "No, but your proposition has certainly entertained me." Real people never sell theit positions for money.

Accident Prevention Campaign Getting Results

Extracts hom address by Derby Bendorf, president of the California Lumbermen's Accid ent Prevention Association at the recent Redwood Region Logging Congress.

"Your Accident Prevention Association has only one purpose and that is to provide its member companies with accurate information regarding the causes of accidents in this industry in order that we, ourselves, can do something about removing the causes. We approach the problem in what we believe is the only practical way. We do not believe it is a job for anyone but ourselves to put our house in order' We do not believe that accident causes cin be effectively legislated or policed out of existence, nor do we believe that the shopworn practice of giving lip and eye service to accident problems through the medium of safety first slogans and the plastering of safety posters and danger signs all over our operations is going to play any great part in the removal of the causes of accidents within the logging and lumber industrv.

"\Me do believe that before we can take our place as one of the least hazardous of all industries, we are going to have to get down to fundamentals. We are going to have to bring the responsibility for accident prevention down to the direct supervisory and workers'level, accept it as an every day job level responsibility, with top management giving the matter the same close attention and scrutiny given any other production problem.

"In any accident prevention campaign it is of utmost importance to have the facts constantly before us. Our Association is prepared to supplement the facts you have, regarding your

own accident causes with those covering the entire industry. We have been analyzing causes of accidents in the industry ever since 1923.

"The California Lumbermen's Accident Prevention Association is very proud to report to you that in 1948 the accident frequency of its member companies totaling approximately 100, was l4/o lower than that of the balance of the industry outside its membership.

"It should also be interesting for your group to know that in 1948 in the logging and lumber industry a little less than 1O per cent of all accidents were from causes which might have been prevented by mechanical safeguarding. Over 90 per cent of the total involved unsafe practices and other human failures. We find that in 1948 the logging and transportation section of our industry (this includes only members of our Association) had 128.38 accidents causing injuries involving lost time per one million hours of exposure.

"Again and finally, accident prevention is a job level, every day production problem. If top management, supervisors and workers alike are made to understand this, and if each gives his whole-hearted co-operation, the logging and lumber industry can and I firmly believe will, within a few years take its proper place among the least hazardous industries in California."

J. Harold Cyr, who for the past seven years has been Puget Sound representative for Pope & Talbot, fnc., has joined the sales staff in the company's San Francisco offices.

Mr. Cyr, with an extensive background in the lumber industry, has a host of friends all along the Pacific Coast. He started with Pope & Talbot in 1934 at their Port Gamble mill and in 1936 was connected with the sales division at San Francisco, going to Seattle in 1942.

Optifornia Oontinues To Be Outstandins Giant Of Plyrvood Oonsumption And IDeaIer Sales

It seems fair and proper that once each year THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT should print and publish a special PLYWOOD ISSUE.

The reason is that few people in the building, or even in the plywood industry itself have a full understanding of tl-re vital importance of California to the softr'vood plywood industry. 'We find that true even with the plywood manufacturers themselves.

For California is the one great and outstanding giant among the various states of the union when it comes to building r,vith plywood.

And r,vhen it comes to lumber dealer sales of plywood, California outranks all other states to an even greater degree than in just plywood consumption.

Figures of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association show that somewhere between 53 and 60 per cent of all Fir plywood produced is sold tl-rrough the dealer. And in California the percentage is still greater than that general average. This for the reason that several of the other states which consume great quantities of plywood, use it largely for industrial purposes.

Just to illustrate horv dominant a part the State of California plays in the plywood game, get this, and let it sink in:

In 1948 California consumed approximately as much Douglas Fir plyrvood as all of the following states combined: Vermont, Nerv llampshire, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Texas, Iqwa, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, I{ansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexico, Arizona, Colo- ' rado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Kentucky, and Connecticut. Twenty-seven states.

Folks shake hands with the plyr, vood champ-California.

And it has been that way from the very beginning, for California started out to be the biggest consumer and buyer of Fir plywood from the very inception of that industry in the Northwest, and with every year that passes this prominence grows.

Most of the other large building states of the nation were slow to take up the use of plywood for general building uses. Dealers were slow to buy and boost it, preferring to follorv the old-timey method of building broad wooden surfaces out of small boards. It was California that developed many of the bountiful and innumerable values of plyu'ood for ALL building purposes, and rvith every year that passes it creates and improvises more n'ays for cutting, and sa'iving, and nailing plyrvcod into building shapes.

In 1948 California consumed 309,800,000 square feet of Douglas Fir plywood. The second state in plyn'ood con-

sumption was Washington, which consumed 244,400,000 feet, the preponderance of which was consumed by the many great door and millwork plants of that state. Oregon was likewise a big consumer, ranking fourth in the nation with 139,400,000 feet, also consumed to a very large extent by great industrial plants. The third state in plyrvood consumption was Illinois which took 147,800,@0 square feet, using much of it in door and milhvork factories. New York rvas next rvith consumption of 128,600,000 feet, while Pennsylvania follorved with 115,000,000 feet, and Indiana was next with 112,600,000 feet. These seven states, California, Washington, Illinois, Oregon, New York, Pennsylvania and Indiana u'ere the only states that consumed more than one hundred million feet of Fir plywood last year. Ohio r,vith 76,400,0N, and Massachusetts rvith 68.400.000 deserve honorable mention as next in line.

In the South, Texas consumed 42,200,000, which put

Plywood Production Reqches Huge Proporlions In Wesl ln 1948

The same Power that in the beginning said-"Let There Be Light"-must have said, at the beginning of 1948--"Let There Be Plywood." For truly there WAS plywood last year. Under the propulsion of apparently insatiable demand from the time the late war was started, the production of plywood in general and Douglas fir plywood in particular has been continually bulging right up to the present moment, and has reached proportions that even the most optimistic booster could never have dreamed of a few years back.

The plywood industry, as such, was born just 24 years ago, and it came unheralded and unsung, its voice heard by few during its earlier years. The writer of this piece recalls spending a day in 1926 at Longview, Washington, in company with the late R. A. I-ong. They inspected the recently completed biggest sawmill on earth, ate in the commissary, made speeches to the key men at the plant, and talked at length about the future of the lumber business. Mr. Long, a man of great mentality and vision and in some ways a prophet, outlined his views of the future of the fir industry in the Northwest. He spoke of the things he expected to make out of logs, of lumber done into many new fashions, of pulp mills, of board mills, of prefabricating activities, of shop and cut-up departments to make use of all of the log.

But he never mentioned plywood. It had really just been born, and it played no part in the thought of that forwardlooking man. The great industry that was destined just 2, years later to make over t$,o billion feet of clear, beautiful, useful, and practical lumber of new character in just a year's time, was not part of his prophecy; or perhaps that of any other man.

THE CALiPONNTE LUMBER MERCHANT hAS Attemted to make the closest possible estimates on plywood production for 1948. The Douglas Fir Plywood Association, of Tacoma, Washington, estimates that the total of all Douglas fir plywood produced last year was 1,900,000,00 square feet,

as compared with 1,600,000,000 feet in 1947. CLM figures on the production of Ponderosa pine plywood made in four California and two Oregon mills, indicate a production of 172,000,000 feet. Which makes a total of 2,072,000,000 square feet of softwood plywood manufactured on the Pacific Coast in 1948. To arrive at Pacific Coast totals, add an estimated 275,000,000 feet manufactured in British Columbia, Canada, and we find a total of 2,347,000,000 square feet; a truly imposing volume.

Plywood production increased tremendously all along the Coast, in Washington, Oregon, California, and Oregon. A year ago today our published list of Douglas fir plywood plants in Washington totaled 24, whereas today there are 32; our last year's total in Oregon was 15, while our present list shows 24; there were 4 plywood plants in British Columbia, whereas today there are 7 ; pine plywood plants in California were 3, and there are now 4; Oregon had one pine plant, and now has 2; there were 5 fir plywood plants in California a year ago, and today there are 7.

Plywood is now being manufactured from redrvocd, the big new plant of the Eureka Plywood Company, at Eurelca, making 60 per cent fir and 40 per cent redwood board. This manufacturer is highly optimistic about the future of redwood plywood, claiming it has many characteristics that make for high quality and usefulness in the form of board.

For the first part of 1949, The Douglas Fir Plywood Association makes the following report: for the first 22 weeks of the year, Douglas fir plywood production totaled approximately 700,000,000 square feet, which is approximately ten per cent less than the 1948 production for the same length of time. Production for January and February was comparatively light, and it is expected that figures for the summer months r.nay be off, due to the vacation season, and the expected closing of r.nany big mills for seasonal repairs and renovation of the mills.

lighter, split-proof, stronger. Because of its cross-lamination, plywood is strong, yet light. Its smooth surface is receptive to any type of finish. All of these advantages make plywood a better product-one that's easier to sell.

Douglas fir plywood is manufactured in trvo basic types with appearance grades within each type tailored to fit customer wants. This means that you sell plywood specifically developed to meet individual building problems.

Following is a brief discussion of each of the major plywood use fields, suggesting ways for you to build profits by building merchandising around a product that has been called by the editors of Architectural Forum "the building material that can do more different building jobs than any other-and do them better."

Housing

A recent analysis of total plywood sales shor'vs that the market breakdown is approximately 40/o for housing, I5/o for heavy construction and 45/o for other uses, usually referred to as industrial but including everything from lawn furniture, tool chests and boats, to signs, truck bodies and railroad cars.

For retail lumber dealers who are now "stocking trp" on sales ideas to bolster business and profits for the months ahead, here's a one-word lead to plyrvood's part in effective merchandising.

It's versatile !

Useful for more building jobs than any other single item and for a host of non-building applications as well plywood gives dealers, in effect, a single egg that can be put in any one of several baskets. Major among the many plywood uses that mean profit-building transactions include new horne building, remodeling of all sizes and types, commercial construction, industrial uses, boat building, and farm uses.

Any one of these categories offers a fertile sales field for the building supply dealer. Put them all together and you have a blue chip bonanza that can spread in any one of a dozen directions determined by the push you put behind it to capture the business at hand in the territory vou serve.

All are agreed that sales effort salesmanship again is writing the pay-off with the buyers once more in the driver's seat. And here again plywood shows the way because the panels react to promotion. Dealers and builders have made plywood a staple for the retail yard, it's true, like sheets for a dry goods store. But, like department store "white events," plywood is a merchandising material because it meets everybody's needs contractor and pick-up customers alike.

Plywood Is Easy to Sell

The many sales advantages of Douglas fir plywood are literally built right into the product. Douglas fir plywood is real r,r'ood in panel form. Real wood made larger,

Outside of those building prefabricated units, the average home builder last year used about 400 square feet of plywood in each of his houses. IIowever, this figure probably would have been substantially higher if plywood had been readily available everywhere during the year.

With adequate selling, the amount of plyv,'ood used per house can be increased substantially and this has been proved repeatedly by builders who are using as much as several thousand feet of plywood per house.

In such application as roof sheathing, u'all sheathing, and subflooring, the superiority of plywood construction

For store lixtures or complets store inieriors, the suitcbility oI plywood is denonstrcled over cnd over cgqiIr. Light stcrin linishes, which retcin tbe ncrtursl wood becuty, bring estcblishments oI distinction,

is a matter of test record. The resultant house is better where the big panels are utilized. Dealer dollar sizes and dollar profits are up and the resultant time-saving in plyrvood application brings overall economy of construction.

Sell building contractors on the idea of using plywood for subfloors and underlays for smoother, tigher, fasterlaid platforms. This big field is entirely apart from the tremendous sales that you can build by selling Exterior plywood siding, somts, gable ends, fences, and exterior trim. And modern design virtually dictates use of plywood for inside walls, partitions, storage walls, cabinets and built-in furniture.

Remodeling

In the field of home remodeling, plywood is a standout friend of contractor and amateur builder alike. The large panels are easy to work and install by week-end carpenters making their own repairs. A home owner finishing an attic or basement, who might be discouraged by looking at an assembly of other remodeling materials, can do the job easily with plywood panels.

The same holds true of building additions, new rooms, garages. Plywood is easier to sell because the home owner can look at the material and visualize the finished job. Plywood looks easier to work to the home orvner, and the fact of the matter is, it is ! Not only will the panel material permit easier installation, it will actually do a better job.

Extra closets, built-ins and bookcases go up like magic when the big panels are used. And in such projects, often sizes other than 4x8 panels are the easiest, quickest, most economical answer. Remember, Douglas fir plywood norv is offered in these stock sizes: Lenths-60, 72, 84, 96. 108. 120 and 144 inches. Widths-30. 36. 42 and 48 inches.

Concrete Forms

Today, plyr,r'ood is a preferred material for concrete form work because forms are easily erected and result in smooth, fin-free concrete surfaces that save time irnd money by reducing time spent on rubbing and finishing.

Plywood forms are easily stripped and given reasonable care, they can be used time and time again. Plyform is the grade especially manufactured for re-usable concrete form panels. Acceptance of architectural concrete construction during the past two decades is hinged upon broad, smooth surfaces. Plywood panels are the answer.

Another tremendous market to cash in on is store and warehouse building. Modern, smooth, curved surfaces that are so popular today with builders and orvners of modern stores and warehouses are easily built r.vith Exterior plywood siding. A quick-check of your community will no doubt show there are many business men thinking of building new stores or remodeling old ones. The job, then, is to point up the architectural possibilities with plywocd, the structural advantages, the economy through speed of construction.

Another sales prospect for volume use of Douglas fir plywood, whicl-r is an incidental part of construction and remodeling in business districts, is the use of plywood for temporary fencing during building operations.

Signs and Displays

Local commercial and business firms present an always fertile sales field for plywood. Their problem, like yours, is to sell merchandise. Statistics have proven time and time again attractive displays sell more, and plywood is a natural material for building all types of signs, displays, and display pieces. The size of the panels, the ease with which they can be worked, and the natural affinity of plywood for all types of attractive finishes and the panels' natural strength all combine to answer the needs of the display man.

Plywood builds better outdoor signs, too. The large, king-size panels are stronger, present a smoother, more paintable surface. You will find that people in the outdoor sign business lend a willing ear to vour salesman when he explains that plywood allows them to dispense with the conventional supporting border, letting them concentrate all eyes on the sign's illustration and sales message.

pairs and additions at such plants go on constantly, and plywood performs here rvith distinction no matter whether it's a contract job or done by the plant maintenance man. And items such as mock-ups, templates, jigs and stock or special containers mean potential plywood sales.

fn recent years, food preparations and storage have taken on added importance. The lumber dealer will find both the simple equipment built by home-owners and large-scale commercial refrigeration construction of frozen food lockers, constitutes a good market for plywood as rvell as other materials.

The ever-grorving number of home craftsmen represents another source of constant plywood customers who will be with you a long time. The wood-working hobbyist's individual purchases may be small, but they add up. Important, too, the plyrvood sales here-in big panels or smaller pieces-can lead to tie-in sales such as paint, hardware. tools.

Farm Uses

Eventually, the farm may prove to be the biggest plywood market of all for many retail lumber dealers in farm communities. For the big, easv-to-use panels are a natural for farm buildings of all sizes and types. They are harrdy for Tarmers or rural builders alike, no matter whether the job at hand is construction of a grain bin, relining a barn, building portable production buildings such as hog houses, or making more livable farm homes.

It's just that plyrvood properties add up to answer farm needs. Big, rigid, puncture-proof sheets that can be cut and fitted with ordinary carpentry tools. Panels that provide tight structures which are sanitary because insectharboring cracks are eliminated. Panels that are easily painted to provide sparkling, sanitary, easy-to-keep-clean surfaces in milk houses, for instance.

Right now, in many areas grain storage is a smacking big problem to farmers as bumper crops come in with carry-over at record highs. Plywood has been proved ideal in many grain bin designs, plans for which are readily available from Douglas Fir Plywood Association at Tacoma 2, Wash., or at agricultural schools.

Prefabricated farm structures represent another farm field for building supply dealers. This is especially true if the current trend of prefabricated small farm buildings in lumber yards continues. Many a retailer has found sales soar when plyrvood panels are merchandised into prefabricated farm units.

Many farmers keep small stocks of building materials on hand at all times. Exterior type fir plywood has a real place in such preparedness because it can help the farmer do so many different jobs easier than he's ever before done them.

Marine Construction

The Exterior type Douglas fir plywood, bonded with completely waterproof phenolic resin adhesive is now the accepted material for all types of marine uses. The problem of joints, the boat-builders' chief headache, is minimized with large panels of Douglas fir plywood. Plywood is used for almost every conceivable type of marine construction, such as plywood skiffs and dinghys, sailboats, power boats, work boats.

Plywood is the cnswer lo the cmateur boqt builder's need, especiclly tor lightweight, rugged craft such cs shown here. Simple conattuction oI dinghy requires no ribs cs siillness ol plywood is utilized lully. Pcrddleboard, too, ig ol plywood.

Many dealers have found they can get sizable orders for plywood from school shops building boats and other projects from plywood.

The recent development in production of extra-length plywood panels serves as well to extend the plywood sales opportunities in marine construction. These oversize panels are the express answer to many a boat builder's problem, amateur and professional alike, as single panels rvill cover from stem to transom. Most popular lengths are 16, 20, 24-foot sheets for outboards, sailboats and small cruisers. But manufacturers can make any desired length sheets by the recently perfected scarf:jointing method, shipping facilities being the deciding factor.

There are many other plywood uses, of course, which stand out as ready sales builders for dealers for it is the retail lumber dealers who have jointly played so important a part in making plywood the wood of 1,000 uses. But, important, too, is the two-pronged program of plyrn'ood manufacturers dedicated to ever broadening ac'centance of Douglas fir plywood.

The first is quality. Integrity of product is a bywood with fir plyrvood manufacturers with industry performance standards and industry grade marking of product a part of overall marketing. Under the new U. S. Cqmmercial Standard CS455-48, established by the industry through the U. S. Bureau of Standards, glue-line performance requirements are at an all-time high. Appearance grades within both the Exterior and Interior types are tailored to use requirements in order to make the most useful, versatile panels possible from the raw material.

Constant, aggressive advertising and promotion constitutes the second point. A substantial phase of this is devoted to preparation of basic use booklets designed as sales-builders through showing how to capitalize fully on plywood's inherent properties. In addition, sales helps available to retail lumber dealers include folders and leaflets for their customers and their mailings, counter displays, wall hangers, boat plans, advertising mats, etc.

Such materials are available upon request from the industry trade-promotion organization, Douglas Fii Plywood Association, Tacoma 2, Wash.

The Back Business Keeps 0n frrowing

Whoever wrote the line that "Big oaks from little acorns grow," could have had in mind Bill Back, of Los Angeles, or J. Wm. Back as he is formally called.

Here is a brief run-down on the series of events that make him today one of the most successful panel rrien in the State of California.

About 45 years ago his father, J. C. Back, a Los Angeles businessman, bought some property at 36th and Maple Avenue and put some store buildings thereon. Long afterward, in 1931, Bill Back rented one of the store buildings from his father, and started in the panel and plywood business. There was 800 square feet of floor space in his first panel plant.

A year later, the business showing growing pains, even in the depths of depression, he bought a lot adjoining his place of business and built his first real panel warehouse. The business grew right through the depression years, and, since Bill Back did most of the work it must be assumed that he did some hustling. To build and grow when nost of the business world was falling like crumbling bricks around his ears, was something of a triumph.

But he outgrew this enlarged place of business, and in 1937 he made his first big move. He bought two lots on the site his business now occupies on East 32nd Street, and on this built a new office and warehouse. He had 100 foot frontage and 17,500 square feet of warehouse space, and now he went into the panel business for certain with much enlarged and more varied stocks of both soft and hardwood panels. The place was modern and the offices attractive.

But even these essentials were not keeping up with the growth of the Back Panel Company, so in 1946 he replaced

Hardwood Plywood Institute

The National Lumber Manufacturers Association, Washington, D.C. reports that its board of directors has recently approved application for membership of the Hardwood Plywood Institute, whose offices are at 600 South Michigan Ave-

these buildings with a new and modernized office and warehouse set-up that is something to be proud of. It is a steel and concrete two-story building, with extremely handsome interiors, many private offices, etc. The warehouse space is now 30,000 square feet. It is served by a private railroad spur that handles five railroads cars at the same time. There is 20,000 feet of black-top yard space in the rear for loading and unloading, and likewise a winter unloading unit, where materials may be handled even in the rainy season. There are three and one-half acres all told included in their buildings and yards.

Their equipment consists of three lift trucks, and fottr delivery trucks.

In the year 1940 Mr. Back got extra ambitious and branched out. He created The J. Wm. Back Lumber Company, and opened a wholesale hardwood and softwood lumber yard right next door to the Back Panel Company plant. The lumber company has offices in the building of the Panel Company. Here large stocks of hardwood and softwood lumber are carried in stock, and sufficient sheds were erected to house the lumber requiring protection. This separate Back business has thrived and prospered from the day it started, and is one of the orvner's proudest possessions.

No attempt shall be made here to give further details about the Back businesses, the stocks carried, etc. This story simply goes to show what can be done in spite of panic and depression by a man who was too interested in the hard work he was doing to worrv abottt economics. Rill Back is a quiet, thoughtful, courageous man of business, who talks little, works hard and intelligently, and gets things done. His rock-ribbed integrity-never questioned-is the backbone of his business success.

Exterior and Overlaid Plywood

California is becoming an increasingly important market for exterior plywood and overlaid plywood. For example, out of the total of California shipments in 1948, 27 per cent was in sound one side exterior, and 3g per cent in sound two sides interior. Industrial uses for overlaid account for a substantial portion of that tvpe of material that moved into the State.

Overlaid or so-called plastic-faced plyrvoocl has come to be recognized as a superior concrete form material. It is used particularly on those jcibs calling for multiple re_use of the panels, and/or where a superior cast on the concrete face is desired.

There .are two principal types of overlaid plywood on the market, the principal difference being in the percentage of resin content in the overlay faces. Both types of panels are used for concrete forms. However the lower resin content panels are reported to have sufficient form_liner effect as to impart a harder finish to the concrete by reason of the suction created.

This effect has been likened to case-hardening of metals -a desirable feature to increase weathering qualities.

Some Time in Los Angeles

Wayne I. Rawlings, manag.er of Harbor plywood Corp. of California, with warehouses in San Francisco and Oak_ land, is spending a good deal of time at the George E,. Ream Co., Los Angeles, of which he is vice presidenq and is active in the affairs of that firm. The San Francisco and Oakland business, like the Los Angeles business is a subsidiary of the Harbor Plywood Corporation, with mills and administrative offices in Hoquiam, Wash.

N{. S. Munson, manager of the George E. Ream Co., u,ill shortly establish a home in Los Angeles, as Mrs. Nlunson joined him last rveek. Coming from Grays Harbor in Washington State, rvhere the annual rainfall approaches 100 inches, he finds the Southern California climate a pleasant contrast to that to u'hich he is accustomed.

It is reported that the large majority o{ plyu, ood mills of the Pacific Coast will close during the summer months for varying periods. Nfost of them rvill make their annual summer repairs and renovations, and many will take vacation periods of idleness. Some of the periods of idleness will start around lulv first.

Panel Makers Continue to Up-Grade Product Quality; Introduee New Grades, Sizes to Meet Users'Needs.

The story of the phenomenal growth of the Douglas fir plywood industry is told with a simple syllogism: greater quality means more uses more uses mean more users . more users mean greater production.

Not to be overlooked is the underlying fact that a component part of product quality are the inherent properties of the material itself-large panel size, strength, rigidity, splitproofness, etc. These desirable physical characteristics have all contributed to plywood's widespread acceptance and demand.

Today, the quality of Douglas fir plywood surpasses that of the 1905 product just as today's 1,000-plus uses shade the first fir plywood's single use as a drawer bottom. Production, oT course, has been increased proportionately to supply ever growing usefulness.

Industry Quality Minded

Quality of product, consistently maintained and repeatedly improved to meet new performance standards, has brought plywood the widespread recognition of versatility and dependability.

And today, because of industry devotion to betterment of product, plywood is manufactured in accordance rvith more stringent performance requirements than ever be'NTERIOR.TYPE

fore. Such are the panel prerequisites in the nerv Commercial Standard CS45-48 effective November 1, 1948. Under the new standard, plywood is, more than ever before in its history, manufactured in types, grades and sizes tailored expressly to meet the actual use requirements in its myriad applications.

New Grading System

Of special interest to lumber dealers is the new, simplified grading system called for by the standard. Under this system the outer or face veneers are known by simple ABC appearance designations. The A veneer, logically, is the highest quality. The B veneer is a new quality; it afiords a smooth, solid surface only somewhat lower in appearance than the A. Small defects such as tight knots and circular repair plugs are permitted in the new B veneer.

C and D quality veneers are structurally sound, although they have certain appearance defects such as restricted knot holes. Such veneers are intended for panel backs or for both outer plies of structural plywood such as sheathing rvhere appearance is not important.

Four New Plywood Grades

The introduction of the new B veneer makes possible trvo new appearance grades of plywood with both Interior

The nen' appearance grades rvithin the Interior type are Interior A-B and Interior Pl1'Base (I3-D). The former (A-B) is suitable for all inside applications requiring one surface of highest appearance quality (A) and opposite side solid and smooth (B). Interior A-B may be used as an alternate for A-A for cabinet doors, fixtures, displays, etc.

PlyBase (B-D) is the interior grade developed as a base for floor ccverings such as linoleum or s'all to rvall carpeting, backing for rvall tile and many other utility uses. One PlyBase face is smootl-r, solid B veneer rvhile the back veneer (D) for economy permits limited wood defects such as knotholes t'hich do not affect serviceability.

The ne wappearance grades within the Exterior type are EXT-DFPA.A-B and EXT-DFPA Utility (B-C.) The Extericr A-B has the same veneer characteristics as the Interior A-B discussed above. It has been developed for all permanent outdoor, marine and refrigeration uses requiring one surface of high appearance the other solid and smooth. Can be used as an alternate for EXT-DFPA.A-A.

EXT-DFPA.Utility is the second nerv Exterior grade. Sanded on both sides this grade meets use requirements for all permanent outdoor applications u'here one solid, smooth, "utility" surface meets appearance needs, such as farm structures, roadside stands, construction buildings and the like. The back is of C quality veneer.

In accordance with the new standard, Interior type Douglas lir plywood is now manufactured with improved glues several times more durable than previously. This higher performance is added insurance against any deterioration such as rain or moisture that might conceivably be encountered during construction. It should be used exclusively for inside applications or such structural parts as roof and wall sheathing, subflooring and underlayment.

Plyform Performance Boosted

Plyform, the multiple re-use concrete form grade that falls within the Interior type now is manufactured u'ith both faces of the new B quality veneer described above. Plyform continues to be of special inner-ply construction for added strength in the rugged job for which it is intended, and continues to be edge'sealed and mill-oiled unless otherwise specified.

New Panel Sizes

Of interest to plywood retailers and users alike is the fact that plywood panels are now manufactu:'ed in new stock sizes which reduce the total number of sizes manufactured by about 25 per cent. The largest volume of fir plywood is produced in panels 4'x8'. Standard sizes include widths of 2f', 3', 3%' and 4' and lengths of. 5', 6, 7', 8'. 9', LU and lV.

Because of its large size, plyrvood makes possible savings of up to 50 per cent and more over ordinary lumber in handling and labor costs. Extra long plywood panels are available in lengths of from 16' to 24'. Even panels as long as 50' can be manufactured and shipped.

Quality Control

Additional evidence of the plywood industry's quality mindedness and proof positive to consumers that the plywood they buy lives up to the rigid specified standards is the statistical quality control program calling for systematic random sampling of productibn.

Under this program, a corps of inspectors constantly circulates among the mills choosing plywood samples that rvill be tested in one of the two industry-owned laboratories

Dealers Selling Giant Panels

Giant panels of Super-Hartjord plywood are now a stdple item in the distributing stocks of the George E. Ream Co., Los Angeles. These panels, available from stock in various thicknesses and in lengths up to 20 feet are on hand for the dealer trade. Such panels. once a curiosity, now seli more consistently to the trade. They are used for boats, truck bodies, signs, certain architectural features of homes and other buildings, and particularly for uses where cantilever type overhangs or canopies are engineered to take advantage of plywood's lhenomenal strength.

Greater length panels are available on special order, and in any length possible to include in railway car shipmeni

The Ream Company's parent organization, Harbor Plywood Corporation, are the manufacturers of these outsize panels, and are reported to have rnade numerous shipments by rail in lengths up to 49 feet, 6 inches.

Cclpellcr Plywood Compcrny Opercrting Improved Plcrnt Full Time

Mr. Adrian Levy, of San Francisco, president of the Calpella Plywood Company whose plant is located at Calpella, California, reports that their mill is now operating full time, after being closed for a while to permit the installation of new equipment and machinery. They have recently installed an entire new conveyor system, new boiler house and boilers, and a new Coe ten-section dryer. A new Coe lathe and their latest semi-automatic clipper had been previously installed. The capacity of the mill is now 2,000,000 square feet of finished )/s" plywood per month.

The general offices of the company are located in the Mills Building, 220 Montgomery Street, San Francisco 4, California.

Mr. Levy reported that the product of the new mill, whiclr has been in operation since May first, is of the highest possible quality of Douglas fir board.

-one in Tacoma, \Mash., the other in Eugene, Ore. These laboratories make over one quarter million tests each year.

As a result of this program, the glue line performance of the wood and glue sandwich is the highest in the entire history of plyrn'ood manufacture.

California Lumber Dealers Calilornia Outstanding Giant Selling Hardwood Plywood

Lumber dealers in California in the past few years have taken an increasing interest in stocking and selling hardwood plywood. They are selling this to carpenters, hobbyists, local cabinet shops, and also for interior decoration in new homes and for remodeling old ones.

Dealers can now get display racks, brochures on installation and finishing, as well as other literature of general interest to the ultimate consumer, from the various manufacturers and distributors.

When dealers sell hardwood plywood to homeowners they are creating new business, because they are usually replacing a product which they do not handle. They find that an installation of hardwood plywood is its own advertisement, as it often results in bringing other customers into their stores.

There is an almost infinite variety of hardwood plywood available today to suit every taste and purse. This includes cabinet hardwoods of rare beauty from all over the world. The increased demand has permitted manufacturing economies, as the result of which some manufacturers are offering certain species of hardwood plywood such as oak, walnut, and korina, formerly considered in the luxury class, at very reasonable prices.

Low cost, flush type doors are also available in the various species of hardwoods to match the walls. And dealers are taking full advantage of this.

her far ahead of all the Southern states, North Carolina coming next with 25,400,000 feet.

In no other state is plywood as well distributed as in California. There are plywood warehouses and wholesalers everywhere, and no retail lumber yard is so remote as to be more than the shortest time away from a prompt and satisfactory source of plywood supply. No other building material is better merchandised. What coffee and toast and eggs are to the average breakfast table, such is plywood to the California building trade.

And it will probably always be that way, for the building tendencies are all in that direction. The beauty, the versatility, the practicability of plywood have from the beginning found understanding and welcome in California. That's why it remains the plywood champ; without challengers.

A Double Scoop

A certain small town newspaper cares very little for national or international news, but its enterprising editor is bedeviled by an all-consuming ambition to scoop the only other weekly paper in the district on local events of importance.

One week he accomplished a minor victory by being first to report a certain disaster in another small town in the county. The following week he printed the following: "We were the first newspaper to announce the fire that totally destroyed Perkins Paint Store last week. We are now first to announce that the report of the fire was entirely without foundation."

The Green Eyed God

There's a one-eyed yellow idol To the north of Khatmandu, There's a little marble cross below the town; There's a broken-hearted woman Tends the grave of Mad Carew, And the yellow god forever gazes down.

SaIest

St. Francis of Assisi said: "Only a weapon challenges a weapon, and might challenges might, while that which cdres not for worldly protection is the safest and lasts the longest."

I Believe

I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity an obligation; every possession a duty.

I believe that the law was made for man, and not. man for the law; that government is the servant of the people, and not its master.

I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.

I believe that thrift is essential to well-balanced living and that economy is a prime requisite of a sound financial structure, whether in government, business, or personal affairs.

I believe that truth and justice are fundamental to an enduring social order.

I believe in the sacredness of a promise; that a man's iryord should be as good as his bond; that character-not wealth or power or position-is of supreme worth.

I believe that the rendering of service is the common

duty of mankind and that only in the purifying fire of sacrifice is the dross of selfishness consumed and the greatness of the human soul set free. I believe that love is the greatest thing in the world; that it alone can overcome hate; that right can and will triumph in the end-Edwin Markham.

A Recl Gent

A man passenger on a crowded bus was seen to suddenly lean over against the window and bury his head in his hands. The man next to him was concerned. He asked:

"Are you sick, Mister? Can f help?"

"Nothing llke that," said the other, his face still covered. "I just can't bear to see a lot of old women stand."

Could Be

The personnel manager was interviewing a man who wanted a job.

"Ffow long did you work at your last place?" he asked.

"Sixty-five years," said the applicant.

"How old are you?" the employment man wanted to know.

"Foity," said the applicant.

"FIow could you work sixty-five years on one job if you are only forty?" was the next question.

And the man answered: "Overtime."

Lord Byron Wrote:

So, we'll go no more a roving, So late into the night, Though the heart be still as loving, And the moon tre still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath, And the soul wears out the breast, And the heart must pause to breathe, And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving, And the day returns too soon, Yet we'll go no more a roving, By the light of the moon.

On The Run

Half the joy of life is in little things taken on the run. Let us run if we must-even the sands do that-but let us keep our hearts young and our eyes open that nothing worth while shall escape us. And everything is worth jts while if we only grasp it and its sign-Victor Cherbuliez.

plywood produced here is recommended for interior use only. Grading and construction are accordin! to the standards set forth for Ponderosa and Sugar'Pia,g plywood in the U. S. Department of Commerce Commercial Standard No. T5-4681.

The plywood produced. here is exclusively it \OOP Yo"derosa Pine ,construction throughout. Concentration of the .management is focused principally upon the manufactureof 3, 5, and 7-ply Sound 1 Side, Solid Back Panels in t/4", f" and fu" sanded thicknesses respectively and designed primarily to meet the needs of the cabinet maker and fur-'niture manufacturer, although other grades are manufactured to a limited extent. The exclusive and important advantage of the Ponderosa Pine panel to these particular buyers lies in the fact that the grain will not raise to destroy the fine appearance of an otherwise perfectly manu-' factured piece, and it was felt that this virtue could .be turned to best advantage among a trade where lasting appearance is of paramount concern. Accordingly, the moisture content of the finished panels produced here is very carefully controlled to insure ease of working and finish painting.

Visitors are always lvelcome at this small but complete plywood mill. In this respect, it is worthy of note that the plant is located in the heart of the 49'er Mother Lode gold mining area made famous by the pens of such early-day writers as Bret Harte and Mark Twain. Near San Andreas, California, on U. S. Highway 49, it is also within an hotlr's drive of the wortrd'renowned Calaveras Grove of Big Trees an{ thereby a,point of more than casual interest to the outof-state visitor. ''i

New Medium-Priced Hcrdwood ?lytruood Panel

Development of a new, medium-priced hardwood plywood panel, known as "Weldwood Craftsman Grade," was arinounced by Lawrence Ottinger, president, United States Plywood Corporation. It is designed especially for home bwners and cabinet manufacturers at a price substantially lower 'than has been possible heretofore, Mr. Ottinger said, adding:

"This new product is the result of many years of research culminating in the erection of a large new plant at Orangeburg, S. C., which is highly mechanized and employs many novel techniques to produce a better product at lower cost.

"The Craftsman grade will be made in walnut, oak, korina, birch and gum, all in \/a inch thickness. It supplements the hardwood plywood produced at our Algoma, Wis. plant-the largest of its kind in the world."

and has a complement of 19 men. Particular cognizance slrould be given her draft which is 9'6" fully loaded and only 4l' light. Consequently, she u'ill be navigable in practically any waters on the Pacific Coast.

The Vessel r'vill be able to carry 525,000 bd. ft. of rough lumber or 650,000 bd. ft. of surfaced lumber, which is a capacity cargo, and is a very desirable cargo. It does trot overtax the mills or the yards and obviates filling up yards rvith unsold inventory.

It will take an estimated 6 hours-plus to load and 6 hours-minus to discharge her. ller running time rvill be, Coos Bay to San Francisco 30 hours; Coos Bay to Los Angeles-56 hours.

The M. S. "C-Coaster" is indelible proof that when a situation becomes critical, such as the Pacific Coast lumber shipping business, someone invariably offers the industry the knorvledge of their life-long experience and establishes a nerv. streamlincd. modern method.

\\r. R. Chamberlin, president of the firm that bears his name, has been associated r'vith the lumber shipping business since 1900 and has orvned, operated and chartered vessels since 1916. The firm was appointed general agent for the War Shipping Administration throughout the rvar, and its entire staff has been working since hostilities ended to design a particular type lumber vessel that could compete in every sense with the railroads, trucking firms and other u'atcr-borne carriers.

After spending considerable money and time on research, it r'vas decided that a Landing Ship Medium (LSM), properly converted, r,vould meet present requirements.

In November, 1948, W. R. Chamberlin & Co. purchased an LSM and arranged 'ivith the Commercial Ship Repair, Inc., to make the conversion. It .is estimated the reconverted vessel will cost at least $180,000.00 before sailing on her maiden voyag'e to Coos Bay, Oregon, the middle of this month.

The M. S. C-Coaster is a trvin screw, 3,600 h.p. Diesel powered vessel with an expected operating speed of approximately 12 knots. She is 203'6" over-all and has a 34' beam,

Advantages of shipping by the M. S. C-Coaster are Speed, Navigability, Quick Loading and Discharging, Packages or Bundled Lots, and Competitive Rates: She will compete with other rvater carriers and her rates are lower than railways or trucking firms.

She will be able to offer to the lumber industry speed in the delivery of special orders, enabling lumber yards in Los Angeles or San Francisco to take delivery of special orders within three days after placing those orders with the mill. There is no other form of transportation that can offer this speed of service in transit for lumber.

She is the only contract carrier that can take full lumber loads out of ports on the Pacific Coast r,vhose controlling depth is as shallow as 10 ft.

Insurance is included in the tariff and less than cargo lot loads are accePtable.

There is no gear on her converted decks as she loads and discharges entirely by shore-side or floating cranes. Loading and discharging is strictly a "Package Operation." Prior to ioading, the lumber will be assembled in stacks of equal lengths and widths, pref erably strapped securely with either steel strapping or wire. However, unstrapped slingload lots will be acceptable. The approximate maximum size of such a package will be 3,500 bd. ft.

The vessel will carry about 70O rvire rope slings, by which packages will be loaded aboard. Once in place, sling and

package remain as is until the completion of the discharging operation, at which time the slings are re-loaded aboard the vessel for the next southbound voyage. It is contemplated that packages in excess oif 12 ft. in length will be lifted by two slings, thus decreasing possible dam. age to the cargo and danger in the loading or discharging operations.

By this method, the necessity of handling separate pieces of lumber by hand (which has been customary) is eliminated, resulting in time saved and reduction of vessel operational overhead. This saving of port time during loading and discharging operations is passed on to the shipper or consignee in the form of quick turn-around voyages, which will result in a greater ease in fitting the ship into production schedules at the mills, while maintaining continuing rapid delivery to the yards.

In addition to other modern safety precautions taken, the ms C-Coaster is equipped with Westinghouse marine radar, and is also equipped with R.C.A. ship-to-shore telephone.

The vessel is powered with two Fairbanks-Morse Diesel engines, rated at 1,800 h.p. each. She has completely new water systems, electric water heaters, pumps and piping; one for washing and one for drinking and culinary purposes.

She isequipped with two Westinghouse 440 Volt 100 Kilowatt generators, powered by two G. M. auxiliaries. Each of these generators can completely supply the power requirements of the vessel.

The vessel is also equipped with two electric systems, A. C. and D. C., enabling her to completely shut down her plant and draw power from the dock to facilitate maintenance of engines.

Vessel has been completely re-wired in accordance with Coast Guard specifications; fire hydrants and ventilators have been re-located and re-piped, so that a maximum of vessel's deck space could be used for lumber, and at the same time conforming with Coast Guard, A'8.S. and Public Health Department requirements.

Vessel's gross tonnage is 739 tons, net 359 tons.

Charlie Buckner A Plywood "Tophand"

There is a good book tl-rat says that "A prophet is not without honor save in his own country." In a lot of cases that is probably true as scripture. In fact it IS scripture. But in the case of Charlie Buckner the Biblical remark just doesn't hold water. For Charlie IS a prophet in the plywood business. And his friends in the industry seem to be generally of the opinion that he is WITH honor; a prophet who has earned the respect and admiration of everyone connected with that industry.

It was 23 years ago to be exact that the writer of this piece first met Charlie Buckner. It was in Portland, Oregon, and rve grinned, shook hands, and sat down for a friendly chat. That chat lasted all the remainder of the day. And, as is most unusual in the case of this writer, he did nothing much but listen. Charlie Buckner, with a bit of needling, did the talking. In those days salesmanship was much on the mind of this u'rjter. He spent the majority of his time going around the country talking, selling and merchandising and stuff like that. And in Charlie Buckner he met a deep and interesting reservoir of what seemed like practical i<leas. For this was a salesman who was packed full of selling thoughts, and liked to tell about them.

Unlike most of the sales experts who talk much on that subject at lumber conventions, what this man said sounded genuine and practical. And this writer listened. And learned. And remembered. And often in the few years that follorve<l he sat while Charlie Buckner talked salesmanship. It wasn't long before Buckner's chief subject was plywood; plywood of the Douglas fir variety. When he got hold of plywood it opened for him a whole world of delightful sales possibilities. The things Charlie predicted to us about plywood about cover all the great improvements and advances that plywood has

nade since. IIe was dead certain that there were no lirnitations to its future possibilities and greatness. He would have you unclerstand right then that yc'-r cculd builcl anything u'ith it except blow-torches, and he was not entirely sure you couldn't do that.

All the great forward movements in the affairs of uran are rracle through fellows like Charlie Buckner-dreamers. Ancl Buckner has been dreaming and working on the possibilities of plywood now for more than twenty years, and most of the things that can-re out of his active imagination, have come true, ancl proved practical. He got to where plywood for railroad cars was the serious business of his life, and now see what has happened. Huge quantities of the product are now being successfully used for such purposes, and more every year.

\\re single out Charlie Buckner for a gentle pat on the back at this tin-re because he looks like a man who has grandly earned the approval of the industry he has follorved so devotedly. No living man ever had a higher opinion of plywood than Charlie, and no other man ever worked harder to prove that his opinions deserved respect. Many dreamers fail because they rvon't back their inspiration up with perspiration. Not so tl-re very modest subject of this sketch. He is a worker from away back, and never so happy as when trying by the sweat of his brow to prove the strength of his theories.

The plywood industry owes much to Charlie Rircliner, ar.rcl to all the others like him in the industry; if, indee<l, there be others. Fortunate would be the business that was lvell supplied with sucl-r men.

llorace E. Wolfe, \,Vest Coast representative of N{arquart l\'fillu'ork Co., Oshkosh, Wis. left Jrne 7 on a trvo months' business trip. He u'ent by rvay of Arizona, Texas, and Louisiana to the East Coast, and n'ill spend some time at the factory at Oshkosh. He is making the trip by automcbile.

National-American Directors Elect Officers

The board of directors of the National-American Wholesale Lumber Association elected the follou.ing officers to serve in tl-re corrring year, at their-convention in Chicago, Jur-re 7 and 8:

I'resider.rt, I{obert R. Cor'r,1es, Carlos Ruggles Lumber Co., Sprir.rgfield, Mass.; first vice president, Edrvard W. Conklin (re-elected), Nlixer & Co., Buffalo, N. Y.; second vice president, Roy NI. Janin, Roy N{. Janin Lumber Co., I'ortlancl, Oregcn; treasurer, Frank McNally (re-elected), S1-rermar-r Lumber, Inc., Nerv York, N. Y. ; secretary-directing manager, Sid L. Darling (re-elected), Neu' York, N. Y. Assisiant Secretary C. J. Fisher, and \\/estern Manager Paul C. Stevens, Portland, Oregon, were reappointed.

The convention rvas attended by over 200.

Resolutir.rns, unanimously adopted, opposed S. 1820 (Forest Practices Act) submitted by Senator Anderson, and any legislation providing for compulsory health insurance.

The resolutions also favored legislation to create a Senate Committee on Small Business as rvell as a petition to Congress that it enact specific and clarifying legislation permitting the quoting of a delivered price and the absorption of freight, u'here deemed avisable by the seller, rvithout sacrificing the prir-rciples and purposes of the AntiTrust larvs.

By resolution the West Coast Bureau of Lumber Grades and h-rspection tvas recluested to change the length provisions <-,f Rule No. 14 so as to conform u'ith previolrs practice rrncler Rule No. 12.

Accorcling to repcrt from the Northrvest it is probable that there l'ill be little change in sawmill rvages before next April. It is understood that the International Woodu'orkers of America, CIO, has completed negotiations rvith sar, vmill employers rvith that result. Requested increased pay up to 3O cents an hour, a health and welfare fund, a six-hour day and other benefits rvere not allowed. Negotiations still continue in other fir, pine and plyrvood areas, 'rvith both CIO and AFL.
