NEW CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS SHOW BIG INCREASE New construction contracts placed with Pacific System Homes, Inc., I-os Angeles, during April exceeded any similar period in the past nine years, according to company executives, who stated that the dollar value of residential building contracts for owner occupan,cy alone exceeded $200,000.

Company officials report a record number of visitors to the new exhibit rooms recently opened at 5800 South Boyle Avenue.

PURCHASE COTTON COMPRESS SITE

AT PINEDALE Cecil White. Mildred White and P. H. and Bertha Bottoms have purchased 67.96 acres of land and six buildings formerly used by the Sugar Pine Lumber Company at Pinedale and plan to convert the property into a 100,000 bale capacity cotton compress.

The new owners say this will be the largest compress west of Texas. They will start operating this fall.

In addition to the purchase price, a large sum of money will be invested in machinery and equipment.

How Lumber Looks As a result of an agreement made May 7 between loggers and operators to arbitrate their differences, striking^log^gers of the Columbia River distri'ct resumed work May 10. Saw-

mills of the district, including Portland mills, idle because of lack of logs resumed operalion as quickly as they could get a log supply.

An arbitration board of seven, three employers, three

union men and a neutral, started immediately to tackle the questions in dispute. John F. Geisler of -Westport was appointed to be supervisor of the hiring hall.

Including the sawmill workers, 13,000 men were idle when the strike ended.

171 mills reporting ,r .;. i".1, a""r, Lumbermen's Association for the week ended May 1 produced 119,869,149 feet. The industry produced 76'l per cent of its average weekly cut during-1926-1929. New business reported taken for thl week r,r'aJ1 32,747,7O4 feet, and shipments rvere 145'409,311 feet. The unfilled order file at these mills stood at 765,118,349 feet.

The Association reported that total production for the week showed the first effects in a loss from the previous week due to lumber mill closures in the Columbia River area which followed the shut-down of logging operations. >F*t

The Western Pine Association for the week ended May 1, 110 mills reporting, gave orders as 69,939,000 feet, ship-

ments 71,108,000 feet, and produ'ction 74,241,0@ feet. 'Orders were 5.7 per cent below produ,ction, and 1.6 per cent below shipments. Shipments were 4.2 per cent belorv production. Unfilled orders on hand at the end of the week totaled 288.915.000 feet.

The California Redwood Association for the week ended April 24 reported production of 13 mills as 9,146,0@ feet, shipments 10,482,000 feet, and orders 8,548,000 feet. Orders cn hand at the end of the week totaled 78,577,@O feet. **'k

The Southern Pine Association for the rveek ended May 1, 103 mills reporting, gave orders as 31,837,000 feet, shipments 35,167,000 feet, and production 34,223,ffiO feet. Orders were 6.97 per cent below production, and'9.47 per cent below shipments. Shipments were 2.76 per cent above production. Orders on hand totaled 78,513,m0 feet, equivalent

to 3,739 carc.

The Douglas Fir, Pond.r.* nr"", Sugar Pine and Redwood markets showed very little change during the past two weeks. The mills report a good volume of business and prices are firm.

Building operations continue active in California. Lumber arrivals at Los Angeles harbor for the week ended May 1 totaled 21,051,000 feet as compared with 28,086,000 feet ' I the previous week.

By Jack Dionne A friend with whom I enjoy many friendly word combats, recently debated with me over our lunctr, the comparative dumbness of two politicians with whom we were both well acquainted. Each of us rnade potent and eloquent pleas presenting the dim-wit characteristics of our respective champions. I thought I had my nominee for dumb-bell honors mighty well on the road to victory when my wofthy opponent pulled one that entirely floored me. He said: "Listen ! That bird I'm backing in this d.im-wit race WAS TWELVE YEARS OLD BEFORE HE LEARNED TO WAVE BYE-BYE." That one got me.

Talk about a business that has come to life ! The scrapiron business seems to head the list of businesses that have reached the boiling point. During the depths of the depression the time came when you couldn't give away scrapiron. It had absolutely no value. Today the highways and

the byways of this entire land are filled with trucks picking up and delivering scrap-iron. If you drive much you must have noticed them. They are eveqrwhefe, and the accumulations of the non-value years just makes the rush to get and deliver so much more enthusiastic. The stuff goes abroad in great ship-loads, and the demand outruns the supply. {3*r&

Yes, the mad hatters of Europe, with their thirst for power and their lust for blood, have sent an army of men scurrying to all parts of this peaceful land accumulating metals that shall be made into weapons, and tools, and ammunition with $'hich they will destroy one another. Scrapiron does not classify under {'munitions,,of,.qrrar," so it goes peacefully on its way. But when the European factories and forges finish with it-what a difference that will make ! *!F!r

Yes, Man ! Fear is the most potent of all propagandists.

Neither love of food, drink, clothing, transportation, shelter, or any sort of luxury on earth, furnishes the urge to spend that FEAR does. Love of these things is a potent pull at the purse strings; but fear of pain and death is a hundred times stronger. They'll rush to the drug store much faster than to a hat shop. Thus the 850% dividend.

Next time I live I'll know what line of business to follow.

It looks as though the "sit-ilown" strike germ is dytttg in this country, thanks to a public opinion that even the thickest scull could scarcely misunderstand. Trespass, violent seizure, and defiance of law is something we are not quite ready for in this country as yet. We may safely expect Washington to come out against it soon, now that public opinion.has condemned it.

advertising genius and student extraordinary, and whose historical correctness I am prepared to gamble on blindly, says that even George Washington learned that you've got to play politics if you want to be successful politically. He says that the Father of Our Country, the first time he ran for membership in the I{ouse of Burgesses of Virginia, refused to take the regular routes to victory, and was defeated 27O to 40. The next time he ran for the same office he was elected, but he had spent nearly forty pounds for campaign money, and had bought and served 118 gallons of liquor and ten bowls of punch. And it's that way*yet.

* The depths of the depression caused much decentralization in industry. Naturally factories and industries sought places where they could get lower rent and other helpful things to keep them going. Statistics show that in the years 1931, 1932, and 1933, no less than seven thousand business establishments left New York City plants and offices and moved into outlying districts. The same thing in proportion is probably true of the other cities of the country. Now that things are hustling industrially the question is, what will these folks do? Will they stick to their new but less convenient locations, or will they swing city-ward again?

roads everywhere, improved transportation facilities, improved living conditions and conveniences in the outlying districts, it would seem that industries and commerce would continue to fill our rural districts in good times to an even greater extent than they did during the dark days.

*** I sort of scratch my head every day now at the things I hear and read about present conditions. You would think we had reached the halcyon days of milk and honey, and that golden nuggets cluttered the business streets. It is true that there is much building all over the country and that there is a tremendous demand for lumber and other building materials. But nearly all the folks I know in the lumber and building game are in the same fix that I am, myself, to wit: it's going to take a string of years with things at least as good as they are to today to get me back to where f was in 1929. Most of the lumber folks I know are in the same fix. They are making some money' but likewise they bear the cross of accumulated indebtedness that must be lifted before they understand the enthusiasm that seems to abound on the front pages of many newspapers.

Torn Dreier warns business men against getting on their "high horse" in business ways, instead of just acting natural in their business as in their private affairs. He says: "Even the biggest business men are only human beings. They may be the heads of great corporations. They may hold high official positions. Their names may be on the honor list.

But, no matter what their positions, they never escape from being human beings. They get married, become fathers, play games, go fishing, tell stories, eat food, travel, romp with children, fondle dogs, have love affairs, read books and magazines, experience hunger and thirst, have heartaches, and experience moments of ecstacy. Therefore, we argue, always appeal to people as fellow human beings, and not as customers and prospective customers." Not bad advice. tt<*

We hear and read the words "home economics" very frequently these days, and most folks have little real understanding of what it means. You ask the average man or woman and the answer is "that's Where they teach girls to bake a pie." It's a whole lot bigger than that, so I discover, somewhat to my own surprise. For instance, f discover that there are over 17,000 home econo'mics teachers in the United States today, and there are about one and one-half million girls and boys studying home economics in schools and colleges. In addition to that there are another million and a half studying home economics outside of schools, in night schools, 4-H clubs, under the direction of women's clubs, and in various places and ways. A total of three million American boys and girls engaged in this interesting occupation. d<{<*

And what are they learning? To "bake a pie"? Yes. And to select properly the materials from which that pie should be made. Also they learn scientific and practical dressmaking, house furnishing, house decorating, selection of materials for all those things, selection of houses and other buildings, of automobiles, refrigerators, and home equipment of all sorts and kinds. This has been going on with constantly increasing intensity for the past ten or fifteen years, to the end that we may have an intelligently consumer-conscious public which we never had before; a public capable of intelligently judging real values in consumer purchasing. The skillful graduate of a home economics school learns to differentiate between VALUE and PRICE' and by so doing is enabled to get the greatest value for the most reasonable price. By reason of applied home economics the consumer emerges in our national life as a definite and determined FORCE, that kno.nrs how to select, how to buy, and how to use practical eyeryday things.

Arizona Dealcrs Hold 22nd Annual Convention H. S. Corbett Elected President H. S. Corbett, J. Knox Corbett Lumber Co., Tucson, was elected president of the Arizona Retail Lumber & Builders Supply Association at the twenty-second annual convention held at the Hbtel Adams, Phoenix, on May 7 and 8.

The retiring president is Claude A. Hayes of the Prescott Lumber Co., Prescott.

Louis Jennings, Jennings Lumber Co., Safford, was

elected first vice-president and C. J. Killen, Foxworth-Galbraith Lumber Co., Yuma, rvas reelected second vice-president. Chris Totten, Phoenix, was reelected secretary-manager.

Preceding the executive session Friday morning, President Hayes called the convention to order. Governor R. C. Stanford addressed the meeting, referring to the housing shortage in the state and he congratulated the dealers on their efiorts to increase building. Jack Ivey, Red Cedar Shingle Bureau, Seattle, Wash., showed the Bureau's talking motion picture, "The Home of the Wooden Soldiers."

The Knot-Hole Club stag dinner rvas held in the main dining room of the hotel Friday evening. A buffet supper was served on mezzanine floor of the hotel for the ladies attending the convention after whi'ch they attended a theater party.

The annual golf tournament rvas held at the Phoenix Country Club Saturday morning. The closing event of the convention was the annual dinner dance in the main dining room of the hotel which rvas largely attended.

ATTENDS ARIZONA CONVENTION Jim Farley, assistant Western sales manager, The Pacific Lumber Company, is back from attending the 22nd annual convention of the Arizona Retail Lumber & Builders Supply Association, held at the Adams Hotel, Phoenix, May 7 and 8.

He m'ade the trip by automobile and went by way of Las Vegas, Nev.

On a recent visit to the plant of the Boorman Lumber Company, 10035 East 14th Street, Oakland, a representative of this paper noted that the company's yard stick department was running overtime. According to the president, B. J. Boorman, they are shipping yard sticks from Alaska to Mexi'co, and as far east as Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, and Great Falls, \{ont. They have made application to have the freight classification on yard sticks changed from 3rd to 4th class. This would enable them to ship over a much wider territory.

One of the items made in th'is department is valve stem holders, a very convenient article around garages or whereever valve grinding is done. They were working on an order for 30,000 of these to be shipped all over the United States and Canada.

Other articles manufactured by this company include head rails, bottom rails and tilt rails for Venetian blinds, for whi,ch they use Port Orford Cedar, Sugar Pine and Incense Cedar. They also make picture frame mouldings, paint paddles and walking canes.

A new Yates-American high speed moulder has just been installed. This is a splendid addition to the equipment of this modern wood-working plant.

The very interesting trend during these years has been in the item of windows. From the old reliable double hung window hung on weights and cords, and accompanied by wide inside casings, home owners turned to various kinds of hinged windows. Many problems faced the occupants of these buildings because of the difficulty in waterproofing, ventilating and interior decorating.

The development of the Acme sash balance has aided materially in the return to double hung windows, because all the admitted advantages of this type of window are retained and the objections eliminated. The rather recent adoption of the idea of windows in the extreme corners of rooms has raised the question of what type of sash balance should be used. Because of the very nairow mullions, when these corner windows are in pairs, it is impractical to use the popular type installation, so that the Acme balance has been slightly redesigned to use in the top of the windor,v frame. The performance and cost of the overhead balance is the same as the well known side type and permits the builder to dse the Acme on all his windows, regardless of location.

Built-ln Fixture Firm Grows Steadily Paramount Built-In Fixture Co., with factory and display rooms at 1805-9 East 12th Street, Oakland, has now been established four years, and has made a steady and substantial growth during that time.

In the factory the company is now using 40,000 square feet of floor space, which indicates a recent nerv addition.

Considerable new equipment of the most up-to-date kind has been added, in,cluding a new'high speed router, a Billstrom glue clamp and an automatic glue jointer.

A number of inquiries for built-in equipment have been received from Eastern states, and the firm is gradually extending its sales territory, necessitating increased volume of output. The plant is 100 per cent unionized.

Charles G. Murra, who has had many years of experience in the manufacture and sale of built-in equipment, is president and general manager of the company. Louis J. Follini is sales manager, and S. R. Reha is factory superintendent.

Paramount invites dealers to make use of its planning department, asking them to send a rough sketch, for instance, of a kitchen that is to be modernized, giving dimensions of room and location of present sink, windows and doors, and height of ceiling from floor. This department will then prepare a detail plan for the dealer's customer.

National-American \(/holesalers Annual

The retirement of W. B. Dean, general manager of The Diamond Match Company, Chico, Calif., effective May 10, as the executive head of the company's California timber and logging operations, was announced by President W. A. Fairburn of New York on May 3.

Mr. Dean's decision to withdraw from the active leadership and responsible management of this important branch of the company's operations was due to ill health. It was at the personal request of the management of the company that this change has been delayed {or some time so that Mr. Dean, before relinquishing the reins of leadership, would have the honor and splendid record of having completed fifty years of active service with The Diamond Match Company and its predecessor companies. Mr. Dean will still be associated with the Company in an advisory capacity.

Mr. Dean has grown up with the timber and lumber business of Sacramento Valley, which has developed into an important part of the business activities of the company, and with his continuing years of service he has gro'*'n in capacity and gained the respect and esteem of the company's executive management.

John R. Gray, manager of the company's Northwest timbe and lumber operations, in addition to his present duties and responsibilities in the state of Washington and Idaho, will assume, as general manager, the executive leadership of the California timber and lumber operations. Mr. Gray is an old resident of Chico, and was an important member of the company's California organization during the years 1906-1916, since which time he has oc,cupied executive positions with the company in New York and the Northwest.

Mr. Gray is familiar #ith the established policy of the company in California; and the organization which has been developed under Mr. Dean's management will continue as in the past, with no changes made or contemplated, except that certain leading men may be asked to assume a somewhat greater measure of responsibility in the future.

The 45th annual convention of the National-American Wholesale Lumber Association will be held at Atlantic City, N. J., M"y l9-fr. The Ambassador Hotel will be the official headquarters.

Among the speakers who will address the convention are: President Max Myers; I. N. Tate, vice-president of the Weyerhaeuser Sales Co., his subject being, "Where Goes Lumber from Here?"; A. S. Boisfontaine, Southern Pine Association; Henry P. Fowler, attorney of the United States Chamber of Commerce; specialist in Federal legislation; D. Theodore Kelly, the Association's counsel; Bruce Wilson, Federal Housing Administration; W. W. Woodbridge, Red Cedar Shingle Bureau; Roy A. Dailey, manager of the Association's offrce at Seattle, and Secretary-Manager S. L. Darling.

Hearing Starts in Lumber Case

Opens Los Angeles Office

The Federal Trade Commission began a hearing in San Francisco May 5, into alleged unfair trade practices of six lumbermen's associations of Northern California.

Named as respondents are the California Lumbermen's Council, the Coast Counties Lumbermen,s Club. the Central Valley Lumbermen's Club, the Northern Counties Lumbermen:s Club, the San Joaquin Lumbermen's Club and the Peninsula Lumbermen's Club.

The hearing is before Judge Charles F. Diggs, trial examiner. It will probably last several weeks.

Southland Lumber Co. of Aberdeen, Wash., wholesale lumber distributors, has opened an office in the Petroleum Securities Bldg., Los Angeles, with J. H. (Jim) Pack in charge. Mr. Pack was previously connected with the Seattle office of the Blanchard Lumber Co. of Boston.

A. C. Tebb is president of the company, and will make his headquarters at their Aberdeen office. The company will operate the lumber vessel S. S. Alice Tebb, formerly the Forest King, between Grays Harbor and Los Angeles.

Listen In on Union Pacific's Radio Program on Lumber The Union Pacifi.c Railway is conducting a campaign of institutional advertising. It is the purpose to include in these programs educational and promotional presentation of the principal commodities produced in the territory served by the Union Pacific. The first of these commodities is lumber.

Union Pacific's "Build With Lumber" radio programs may be heard May 16 over Station KHJ Los Angeles from 4:N-4:15 P. M., Station I(GO San Francisco from 2:002:15 P. M., and Station KOL Seattle from 4:45-5:00 P. M. The program is listed in the papers as "Romance of Transportation." The first broadcast was on May 2.

These broadcasts deal u'ith home building, logging and sawmill operations, and rvill invite the prospe,ctive homebuilders to contact their local lumber dealers. They rvill be heard over 26 western broadcasting stations.

This campaign in'cludes not only a radio program but also newspaper advertising. These will appear in every newspaper in the territory served by the Union Pacific Chicago and west. Look for this advertisement in your paper.

Demarest has been elected to membership of the Board of Dire'ctors of the United States Chamber of Commerce, representing the Department of Natural Resources and a three-way congratulation is in order including the lumber industry, the "Chamber" and "Demmie."

As a lumberman, Mr. Demarest has a varied background of experience. He is president and owner of the Pacific National Lumber Company rvith general offi,ces at Tacoma, Washington; he is a past president of the West Coast Lumbermen's Association (1934-35) ;a member of the board of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, and of the Douglas Fir Exploitation and Export Company in which organization he served as chairman of the board of directors in 1935.

During NRA days he served as a member of the Lumber Code Authority and of the Control Committee.

His business experience is practical and sound. Beginning with a first job as messenger at the Chase National Bank of \ew York in 1898, carrying throught to the important position of mail teller in the bank's large department servicing out-of-town banks, he made his decision in 1903 to go into business. At this time Mr. Demarest became associated rvith the W. W. Wheeler Lumber Company of Des Moines, Iowa; where he learned timber buying and gained a thorough knorvledge of the quality and type of timber growing in different locations.

Woodbridge, N. J., where he was born in 1881, rvas his home city through childhood and high school years. He married in 1906, Estelle Hawley of Nashville, Tenn. His daughter is Mrs. C. B. Hurley of Tacoma, and his granddaughter is Anne Demarest Hurley' The Demarest home is at Gravelly Lake, adjoining the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

The union scale is: Lumber handlers and pilers, 87f cents an hour; 'clerks, $7.70 per day; clerk's helpers, $6.50 per day. Clerks and helpers going to work in the morning must be retained for a full day.

Apprentices are to be hired in the ratio of one to three men. Apprenti'ce clerks start at $5.0O per day and are increased 5O cents a da1' every six months. Not retroactive to present number of apprent:'ces.

The dealers are not satisfied with this clause. The inconsistency of taking on a green boy to teach him the business at this wage is at once apparent, and will possibly result in the employment of very few young men.

The controversial point now between the dealers and the union has to do with the insistence of the dealers that the time to adjust is prior to a strike. and the dealers are positively demanding arbitration.

A conference board for adjusting disputes has been set up of two employers and tr.vo employees. This can be enlarged by the board.

The union is not agreeable to arbitration, although its parent body, the District Council of Carpenters, is committed to this policy.

A Reports Large First Quarter Gain

Washington, May 8.-Larger gains in the volume of home financing under the Federal Hbusing Administration were recorded during the first quarter of 1937, it was announ,ced today. During January, February and March of this year mortgages accepted for insurance by the F. H. A. totaled $102,997,500. an increase of 64 per cent over the

first quarter of 1936.

In March the gain rvas especially large. A total of $43,790,560 in mortgages accepted for insuran,ce was reported last month, a gain of 98.8 per cent over March, 1936.

The rising residential building volume is further emphasized by the fact that 59 per cent of the mortgages accep_ted for insurance during the year's first quarter rvere for nervly constructed homes.

The National Housing Guild plan of consumer selling launched slightly more than a year ago by Johns-Manville will be introduced to building materials dealers of Pacific Coast states during May at special dealer merchandising clinics to be held in Los Angeles, San Fran,cisco and Seattle, Franklin Shuey, regional vice-president of Johns-Manville Sales Corporation in charge of Pa,cific Coast operations,

Fred Dollahite has been appointed manager of the Whiting-Mead Company store at East San Diego. For a number of years he was manager of their store at Oceanside. Vincent Lewis succeeds Mr. Dollahite as manager of their Oceanside store. Mr. Lewis has been connected with the

of the country are invited to attend either one of these three merchandising clinics at whi,ch P. A. Andrews, vicepresident of Johns-Manville in charge of building materials, and other New York representatives of the company including Arthur A. Hood, founder and director of the National Housing Guild system, will be present to explain this complete plan of consumer selling, which enables the retailing of "packages" of the building industry's commodityshelter.

The Los Angeles clinic will be held at the Biltmore Hotel on May 18.

The San Francisco clinic will be held at the St. Francis Hotel on May 21.

The Seattle clinic will be held at the Olympic Hotel on May 25.

In addition to Mr. Andrews and Mr. Hood, others who will appear on the clinic programs during the day will include H. M. Shackelford, Vice President in charge of sales promotion and advertising, and Gus Meissner, Co-Director of the Housing Guild Division' Each clinic will provide a complete explanation of the Housing Guild system and plans will be outlined for the holding of l2-day Training Courses for retail salesmen and sales managers which have been scheduled for San Francisco from June 1to June 12,and for Seattle from June 15

to June 26.

At these Training Courses in June, Johns-Manville will

provide for building materials dealers and their personnel a complete course of training-even to estimating and financing-which is designed to equip Housing Guild salesmen to sell completed jobs of home remodeling and new house constru,ction to all types of prospects.

Similar L?-day courses of trainirig have already been sponsored by Johns-Manville this year in New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and New Orleans.

Attendance at these schools has averaged more than 200 students per course.

Since the Housing Guild plan was launched by JohnsManville in 1935, nearly 1,400 lumber yard owners, sales managers and salesmen have completed this regular'course of merchandising training.

IJnder the Housing Guild plan, as explained by Director Ilood, the retail building material dealer be'comes the sales headquarters for the various industry factors in his community. By coordinating the services of contractors, architects, realtors and financing agencies, the Guild dealer is able to ofier the home owner a complete package service.

HEAVY CONTRACTS GAIN OVER LAST YEAR New York, May 8.-Ehgineering construction contracts awarded in ihe rUnited States last week totaled $'10.264,000, as reported today by Engineering News;Record. This was a gain of 6 per cent over last year. Private construction rose 104 per cent above the 1936 week and 7 per cent over last

week, while public contracts fell 32 per cent from last year and 23 per cent from last week.

GEORGE GORMAN TAKES SKY ROIUTE George W. Gorman, general manager, Trans-Pacific Lumber Co., Port Orford, Ore., was a Los Angeles visitor

last week.

Mr. Gorman flew his own plane from Port Orford to San Francisco on May 2, and. after making an air trip to Sacramento, made a round trip by the air route to Los Angeles' His plane is a three-pla'ce Fairchild cabin monoplane, with a top speed of 135 miles an hour.

He rvent to high school in San Luis Obispo, and later when he came to live in Oakland, took a number of University Extension courses to round out his education.

His first job in the lumber business was with the San Luis Mill & Lumber Company, San Luis Obispo, where he was assistant to the manager for three years.

He came to Oakland about 11 years ago and worked for some time for the Tilden Lumber Company. From there he went into the manufacturing end of the business for a while being associated with the Swayne Lumber Company, California Pine manufacturers, of Oroville, working in the sales department.

When T. P. Hogan, Jr., took over the business from the Tilden Lumber Company, about eight years ag.o, he returned to Oakland and went to work for the Hogan Lumber Company. He was in the selling and estimating departments for a period, and for the last six years has been buyer and sales manager of this progressive concern.

Mr. Carter was married in 1928, and they have two daughters. They live in Piedmont.

He is active in the Oakland Junior Chamber of Commerce as chairman of the Commercial Relations Committee. He is a member of the Athenian Nile Club and of the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club.

His favorite sport is basketball, in rvhich he takes an active interest as a fan.

He is one of the directors of the Hogan Lumber Company.

As a result of his good work for the Oakland Junior Chamber of Commerce Mr. Carter has been chosen as a delegate to the National Convention of Junior Chambers of Commerce to be held in Denver next month. At this convention the Oakland delegation will attempt-successfully they believe-to secure the National Convention for 1938 for Oakland.

Naturally, as an earnest Junior C. of C. member, he believes the East Bay cities are destined to become great manufacturing as well as great residential cities, and that they are now in a period of steady growth.

Los Angeles Foreign Trade Week I feel that we lumbermen probably have a much keener appreciation of the value of our port to Los Angeles than possibly do other business men rvho are not so closely tied to the waterfront. But that is all the more reason why we should enthusiastically support and go out of our way to advertise Foreign Trade Week to our own friends, particularly to those outside our industry.

Every citizen in Los Angeles benefits from the new rvealth that comes to us each year from the more than $100,000.000 excess of exports over imports, but no industry has been or is more closely or vitally tied to our harbor.

After the turmoil had quieted down, Ed Culnan slipped from the room and soon returned with the real wedding present, consisting of a beautiful silver tray and cocktail shaker, which he prqsented to Bill. The gift that Pete had dropped on the floor was purchased at Woolworth's-and cost the huge sum of $1.10.

Just like in the movies the party had a h"ppy ending, but they are still talking about the joke that Pete pulled.

STEAM SCHOPNER TRI.NIDAD LOST One life was lost when the steam schooner Trinidad. operated by Sudden & Christenson, San Francisco, ran aground about three miles from Willipq, Harbor entrance, carrying a full load of lumber. ' The ship struck on the evening of May 7 in afumile gale, and twenty members of the crew, including Captain Ingvald Hellesto, were brought ashore by Coast Guard surf boats.

Second Mate Werner Krapf, of San Francisco, was washed overboard and drowned before the Coast Guard boats

arrived.

FATHER DIVINE COMPANY BUYS LUMBER MILL IN CALIFORNIA Bob Trailor, follower and associate of Father Divine, Harlem "god," has purchased the six acre tract upon which the McKee sarvmill is located, just south of the town of Willits, Calif.

Father Divine is reported to be investing money in commercial businesses all over the country. The operating companies are incorporated in New York, it is said, and the one which has purchased the Willits property is known as the International Lumber Company.

Employees of the company state that the management intends to double the capa'city of the mill, which now is about 2O,O0O feet daily.

All trucks and automobiles of the company have a large sign on the side rvith the lvord "Peace," the slogan of the Divine organization.

HOBBS WALL BUYS BRUNSWICK Purchase of the steamer Brunswick by Hobbs Wall & Co., San Francisco, was announced by this company, April 30.

The Brunswick has been placed in servi,ce between San Francisco and Crescent City, making a total of three vessels now being operated by the companv. The other two are the Elizabeth and the Santa Monica.

Marlow of the Southern California district, the Federal Housing Administration has accepted from lending institutions, as of May 1, mortgages for examination and valuation covering construction of new homes totaling 8482 cases w'ith a dollar value of $39,694,492, and for the purchase or acquisition of existing properties, or the refinancing of present home liens, 10,811 cases with a dollar value of $41,637,O31.

Mortgages have been accepted for insurance covering construction of.7164 nerv homes with a dollar value of $32,3@,7W, while 8971 cases, totaling $34,155,1M, cover the purchase or acquisition of existing properties, or the refin' ancing of present home liens.

New residential building in 1936 attained the highest volume of any year since 1930. About 27O,W families were provided for by new nonfarm construction. This number was approximately double that in 1935 and exceeded the combined totals for the three years, 1933, 1934 and 1935.

About 25 per cent of the one-family houses which accommodated some 190,000 of the family units in the 1936 total were financed with Federal Housing Administration insured mortgages.

The actual effective demand for housing expanded by an amount substantially greater than that represented by the new construction. This rvas evidenced by the reoccupancy of large numbers of vacant quarters. Residential vacancies reached a peak in 1933 and have been steadily diminishing since that time.

These and other considerations call for a substantially g'reater volume of home building in 1937 and succeeding years than in 1935.

FAULTY CONSTRUCTION EFFECTIVELY CHECKED BY FHA STANDARDS Washington, May 8.-Construction standards and pre' liminary review requirements set up by the Federal Housing Administration, with which all projects to be financed by private capital under the insured mortgage system must comply, will have a definite effect in checking careless and faulty construction, it is believed.

Fox, chief engineer of the county's department of building, who announced today that 156O building permits, valued at $1,981,233, were issued during April, registering a sharp gain over the figures for the corresponding month last year, as well as running well ahead of March, 1937.

As in many months past, the bulk of the April building operations was represented by single-family home construction, about $1,250,000 being claimed by this important cate' gory.
