In Korea today we see millions of home-loving people being despoiled and outraged, their homes given over to the flames, their property to the plunderer, their women to the ravisher, and their throats to the knife. C. D. Johnson Lumber Corporation Makes Huge Lumber Shipment to L. A. Harbor Laden with 4,000,000 board feet of lumber from the C. D. Johnson Lumber Corporation of Portland and Toledo, the

SS Betsy Olson arrived in the harbor of Los Angeles on February 20. According to the statistics available this appears to be the largest shipment ever loaded by ong mill on a single vessel bound into the harbor of Los Angeles. The stock was sold by Stephen G. Freeman & Co. of Balboa, Calif., representing C. D. Johnson. The Shipment was delivered to five or six consignees. A truly prodigious operation, and far from a newcomer in setting production statistics, is that of the C. D. Johnson mill at Toledo. In 1950 the mill shipped 171,000,000 board feet rail and cargo. Of this quantity 103,000,000 was shipped by water on 53 different vessels. This production figure was surpassed only in l94l when 190,000,000 feet were shipped. Perhaps not generally known is the fact that the mill's production and shipment is the largest of any single mill in the state of Oregon. Johnson's shipments into Southern California have come down in a more or less steady flow. Directly before the present cargo 1,500,000 feet were delivered by water into Los Angeles and San Diego. Closely following the Betsy Olson a further vessel discharged 2,000,000 feet at the two cities. The schedule has been regular as a result of the integrated efforts of the mill in allocating and readying the sizable shipments, the selling program in southern California coordinated to that schedule, and service from the steamship company in the proper time arrivals.

Happy? Of course--

he just received a shipment from Zeesman. His trucks were loaded up in jig-time with quality Douglas Fir Plywood, Doors (3-panel, flush and combination) and Hardboards, accord. ing to his order.

Industrial ClubrMeets The Industrial Club of Southern California held a meet-

ing at the Industry Club, Los Angeles, Friday evening, March 9. There were about 100 present including company executives, key personnel, salesmen and guests. President E. G. Thi" fitt" soft, wood is one of the Associated Woods produced by member mills of the Western Pine Association. It is finetextured, and although light in weight, is very strong for its weight. Caryenters like it because it is easy to work, nails without splitting and holds nails and glue firmly. Engelmann Spruce is suitable for many building uses such as sheathing, subflooring, framing, ceiling and siding. It works up satis" factorily for interior finishing, mill work, industrial boxes and crates. The tight knotted boards are often used for knotty paneling particularly where a wood of light color and rather inconspicuous knots is desired. tentative name of Wood Window Institute according tb a report by Russel Bjorn, manager and director. Mr. Bjorn has done considerable work in Southern California and has been told by a dozen leaders in the industry there that they favor a statewide organization under the name of Woodwork Institute of California. A meeting was to be held March 28 in Los Angeles, to which 40 firms were invited to send representatives, to consider whether the Southern California group favors a single statewide organization. The meeting was sponsored by Harry l-ibby, John W. Koehl & Son; T. M. (Ty) Cobb, T. M. Cobb Company, and Francis Hanson, West Coast Screen Co.

At a directors meeting of the northern group, held in

the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, March 14, additional funds were subscribed bringing the group's commitments to approximately $25,000. of which half has been paid into the treasury.

"It looks very encouraging to me for the statewide plan," Mr. Bjorn concluded. "Everyone I talked with in Southern California feels it is the only thing to do. The advantages and benefits are obvious, such as more mileage out of 'dues dollars,' a better and broader program, and a stronger organization with more weight and prestige when appearing before government officials and legislative bodies, or other groups."

Liquid Redwood Survives Mogt Rigid Tests Liquid Redwood, a California Redwood stain, manufactured by Gilbreath Chemical Co., 383 Brannan Street, San Francisco, is now on the market, following exhaustive tests under the most severe actual weathering conditions. This stain has taken four years to develop, test, and compare with other redwood stains. One test site is located on a dry lake bed in Mojave Desert, 50 miles south of Death Valley, and the other was constructed near San Mateo on San Francisco Bay. These weathering tests are being continued in an effort to improve the product still further. This company predicts as a result of the tests that Liquid Redwood will become a very large seller all over the country.

It is packed in quarts. gallons, and five gallons. It will not be packed in drums.

Al Frort'Sclb Intcrat In Sen Dicgo Lumbd Cornprny The sale of hig intercst in thc San Dicgo Lumber Company was announced in Fcbruary by A. A. (Al) Frost, pioneer San Diego lumberman. Al has retained only the San Diego Lumber Company real estate and buildings. The owners of the San Diego Lumber Company now are Harry C. McGahey, Olin S. Easterly and'Orville B. Wilson. This move consolidates all of Al Frost's lumber interests in the Frost Hardwood Lumber Company at Market and State Streets, San Diego, where he and his two sons, Gordon end Albert Jr., are engaged in the wholesaling of hardwood lumber, flooring, plywoods, Ponderosa pine, insulation boards and Formica. Al Frost came to San Diego in 1895. In the summer of 1911, after completing his junior year at Stanford, he organized the Frost Hardwood Lumber Company at the foot of 9th Street. In the fall, he placed a capable man in charge of the business and returned to Stanford where he graduated with the class ot 1912. Then he returned to San Diego and took over the management of the business which has gro\r'n and prospered under his guidance for the past 40 years.

He finds time to take an active part in hardwood association affairs, is a member of Hoo-Hoo, a past Snark of the San Diego district, and a past member of the Supreme Nine. Al is a successful businessman and enjoys the friendship and esteem of the entire Southern California lumber in-

The rerined silkincrc of pine' The birch'r uatin, rlick and fine, The dancing durt, the golden motes' Thc fragrant yellow cloud that foate Above the hickory and oak, While men sweat in that golden smoke To cut, saw, plane, trim, bevel, ahaPe From wood the eager heart'g e$aPe. Strange, how a aimple pile of wood,

There Are Two Secrs There arc two rear in Paleetine. One ir frerh, and firh are in it. Splaehes of gtcen adorn its banks. Treeg epread their branches over it, and etretch our their thirtty roots to eip of its healing water. Along its shores the children play.

The River Jordan makes this gea with sparkling water from the hiUs. So it laughe in the sunshine. And men build their houses near to it, and birds their neEts; and every kind of life ie .happier because it is thcrc. The River Jordan fows on south into another sea. Here is no splash of fish, no futtering leaf, no Eong of birds, no children's laughter. Travelere choose another route, unlces on urgent business. The air hangs heavy above its waters and neither men nor beasts nor fowl will drink. What makes this mighty difference in theee neighbor eeas? Not the River Jordan. It empties the eame good water into both. Not the soil in which they lie; not the country round about.

This is the difrerence. The sea of Galilee receives but does not keep the Jordan. For every drop that fows into it another drop fows out. The giving and receiving go on in equal measure. The other sea is shrewder, hoarding its income jealously. It will not be tempted into any generous

impulse. Every drop it gets, it keeps. The sea of Galilee gives and lives. This other sea gives nothing. It is named the Dead Sea. There are two kinds of people in the world. There are Bruce Barton. two seas in Palestine.

The conductor was fairly spluttering. The Pullman car ladder had disappeared. He stormed: "Who in hell would want to steal a Pullman ladder?" From an upper berth a little old lady stuck her head out between the curtains. She said: "Conductor, you may use mine if you like. I won't need it until morning."

A Blind Mcn s PrcYer Thou who never canst err, for Thyself art the Way; Thou whose infinite kingdom is fooded with day; Thou whose eyes behold all, for Thyself art the Light; Look down on us gently who journey by night. By the pity revealed in Thy loneliest hour,

Forsaken, self-bound, and self-emptied of power; Thou who, even in death hadst all heaven in sight,

Look down on us gently who journey by night.

Wood Strange, how a simple pile of wood, Can strike an answer in our blood,

Can start a passion in our hands To build a sturdy house that stands Against the wind and world and weatherA house that binds our hearts together:

On the road to Emmaus, they thought Thou wast dead, Yet they saw Thee and knew in the breaking of bread. Though the day was far spent, in Thy face there was light, Look down on us gently who journey by night.
