CALL ON ARIZONA TRADE Warren B. Wood, vice-president, and Percy Merithew, in charge of wholesale lumber sales, E. K. Wood Lumber Co., Los Angeles, have returned from a week's trip to Arizona.

With Francis W. Pool, Arizona representative, they called on the retail lumber trade. Mr. Pool accompanied them to I-os Angeles, and spent a day at the company's office before returning to Phoenix.

How Lumber Looks Seattle union -sawmill workers and employers reached an agreement March 20, calling f.or a 7l cent an hour increase, and seven mills closed almost three weeks resumed operation March 22. The union had demanded 10 cents an hour increase and it was agreed to continue negotiations for the extra 212 cents. Everett and Bellingham workers also accepted the compromise terms.

Tacoma sawmill workers voted 5 to I March 21 to accept similar terms and 4,00O members of local unions went back

to work March 22.

Sawmill workers of Aberdeen and Hoquiam voted March 21 to reject the 7rl cents hourly wage increase offered by the operators, and voted 2O to 1 for continuation of negotiations for lO cents hourly wage increase. They also voted to empower the union policy committee to declare a strike should a deadlock develop.

Portland sawmill operators have oftered a raise in wages of. 7Yz cents an hour, but the local union is standing firm for 10 cents hourly increase. The unions also demand preferential hiring of "men who have made lumbering their life work," and a free union-operated employment bureau.

Production of 1W,243,395 board feet of lumber reported for the week ended March N by 171 down and operating' mills to the West Coast Lumbermen's Association is still less by 7,000,000 board feet than the weekly average estab-

lished in October just before the marine strike.

The volume of orders although increasing during recent weeks, is still less than the business which came to the industry last fall.

New business taken by these 171 mills for the week was 119,854,371feet, and shipments were 104,606,ffiZ feet. The unfilled order file at these mills stood at 762,3M,973 feet.

The Western Pine Association, 122 mjlls reporting, for the week ended March 20 gave orders as 72,463,W- feet, shipments 7L,947,W feet, and production 60,195,00 feet.

Orders were 20.3 per cent above production, and .7 per

cent above shipments. Shipments were 19.5 per cent above production. Orders on hand at the end oi the week at these mills totaled 317,793,00 feet.

The California Redwood Association for the week ended March 13 reported production of 13 mills as 8,822,00O feet, shipments 10,077,W feet, and new business 8,708,000 feet.

Constrrrction activity ,ri al,rrlr"ia continues to show a steady increase. Building permits in Los Angeles for the first twenty-four days of l\Iarch totaled $4,398,626 compared rvith $3,649,733 f"or the corresponding period in 1936. Home building is responsible for the gain.

The Douglas Fir market is very firm, and the mills report a heavy demand from all sections of California for general construction purposes. The mills have orders booked from 45 to 60 days ahead with plenty of new business being offered. The Fir industry is still handicapped Py ttte lack of steamship lumber space, all available space having been booked well in advance.

The Ponderosa Pine, Sugar Pine and Redwood markets are very firm and the mills have big order files. Inventories are low. The California demand for Western Red Cedar shingles is good and prices are firm.

The inbound lumber movement at Los Angeles harbor was heavy for the week ended March 21 when 27,172,W feet.arrived during the seven-day period, surpassing the previous week by almost 6,000,000 feet.

budget, monetary infation is a very grave and great danger.

There are very, very few non-controversial subjects now_ adays. Such things are on the shelf with the cold pie. We live right now in the most thoroughly controversial era known to mankind. But Mr. Eccles hit on one subject on which all belief, sentiment, fact, and opinion are on one side when he says that we must either get our books balanced or get our money unbalanced.

bureau on bureau, expense on expense, and where, Oh, gentle reader, do these expensive chickens come home to roost? I ask you, Oh, I ask you! *t<*

Where else in all this dizzy universe but right smack on top of the cost of whatever is made and sold by those who_ either willingly or otherwise-accept these burdens? t< ,f

and needs badly, to enjoy a period of prosperity and money-

making. And right now looks like the land and time of milk and honey that they have been praying for as they wandered through the wilderness of depression.

This morning, over my coffee, I read an advertisement of a sporting goods concern that warned all fishermen and prospective fisherman that whatever fishing paraphernalia they need this spring and summer they had better buy now, because every single item of such stuff is soon going skyward. And you can use that self same argument with regard to practically everything we trade our dollars and wages for. *,F*

The other day it was triumphantly annotrnced that Labor Czar Lewis had achieved the greatest triumph in history for the working man. He had made a deal with Big Steel with regard to wages, hours, and union recognition. This in the face of the oft-heralded report that Big Steel would be the final battleground of the open shop, and that untold millions and every ounce of opposition would be arrayed to beat Lewis. **,1

Why? Why? Why? asked the newspapers. Seems simple enough, and the opinion is now spreading like a ripple on a placid lake. Steel has had a desperate six years. ft needs,

Their domestic consumption is booming. Their natural foreign markets are rapidly increasing. And right on top of that come the definite plans of the old world of a race toward rearmament and battleship building, the like of which was heretofore unknown. The whole world is crying in stentorian voice-"GM US STEEL." j8:**

And so steel finds itself threatened on one hand with a year or mo.re of desperate conflict, curtailed and even eliminated production, expense that would run into figures that would read like an lckes-Hopkins budget; and on the other hand with unlimited orders at their own price, cash on the barrelhead. Did they hesitate? They did not. They dealt with Lewis. {<**

In the next few years the steel industry will make the fortunes of o,ld King Midas. They will fill in the gaps caused by the years of depression. They will put themselves in the most enviable shape in their history. And then, strengthened and renewed in health and stature and the world demand for steel satisfied, then will be time enough to take up other matters, such as Mister Lewis.

The biggest laugh f n"l" n"U ," a year comes from the propaganda that now fills the newspapers and magazines of how it happened that Big Steel and Big Lewis made friends.

Lewis, so this fairy story goes, was stomping in his accustomed fashion about the lobby of a hotel, and the handsome wife of the head of Big Steel saw and admired him, and said to her husband-"f want to meet that man." **'f

She met him, says the illustrated story, and liked him, and her husband began conferring long and privately with Lewis, and they made a deal. Now honestly, isn't that a

swell tale? And thus they furnish Mr. Lewis with a perfectly good excuse for dealing with him; and they remove the one huge obstacle that stood between Steel and the mighty world market of this and the next few years. Truly, gentle reader, the pen is still mightier than the sword, and the propagandist is mightier than both. I wonder if Lewis really swallowed that?

Then what did Steel do? Simply raised the price of steel, automatically and immediately, to cover the increased cost of producing steel. And that added cost spread like a wave through all the seven and seventy seas of steel consumption; and Mr. Consumer will find it added to the cost of all his steel product purchases. I{e won't find it itemized; but it will be there.

It will be like the traveling salesman's fur coat. He said he got it into his expense account-a hair at a time.

*** Mr. Lewis wins his fight. Big Steel steps to the front

of the money-making line. And the man who sells fishing poles and iron skillets advertises to his custorners to come and get what they need before the price raise ripple created by the Lewis-Steel trade-reaches town. :8**

Yes, fellers, a guy by the name of Jones; he pays the freight, just as he has always done, just as he always will do. He may admire Big Steel for its decision to cooperate, and Lewis for the force that brought him success; but when the expense check comes in he will find the name of Jones signed to it. The signature may be in invisible ink; but it will be there.

And that same sort of iipiru irom a thousand difierent sources is today seeking him out. Most of the Jones boys

are making much better money than they were a couple of years ago, and most of them have jobs, and all that. But this

money and these jobs are going to pay the bill. Every strike, no matter how it ends, costs Jones money. And if this infation that Chairman Eccles warns about, should become serious, Jones would be the greatest sufferer.

That brings us back to'where we stafted; to Mr. Eccles.

As I stated in the beginning, no intelligent human will disagree with his declaration that the rapidly increasing cost of living brings the threat of inflation, and that only balancing the budget will avert that danger. But prompt and enthusiastic disagreement comes when he states his remedy for the situation. He says we must balance the budget by raising taxes to cover. ,1.**

Just between us girls and not to be repeated under any circumstances, how do you employes who find that dollar missing out of every hundred you earn since the Social Security Act started working, feel about a few more little subtractions like that one to help balance the budget?

That's what it would take, just a few more like that one.

The new budget-balancing taxes might be less direct than the Social Security tax, but they would be just as definite, and just as much out of your Pocket.

Don't let anyone divert your mind, Mr. Jones-who.paysthe freight, from the fact that new taxes, regardless of what they are or who they are directly assessed upon, come to YOU for payment. Don't let anyone kid you into believing

that they will tax the rich man to get it. The only tax that actually taxes the rich and is not handed down to the ultimate consumer, is the income tax. And the income tax racket is being pretty well worked now. No income tax could balance our budget.

The Southbay Lumbermen's Club has voted to join the California Retail Lumbermen's Association as a group, and the president of the Club will serve on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Division of the State

Frank H. Watson has been appointed sales representative in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys for Hobbs, Wall & Co., Redwood manufacturers. He previously represented the Meadorv Valley Lumber Co. of Quincy, Calif., calling on the California retail lumber trade. He is well known in California lumber circles.

NEW USE FOR REDWOOD A new use for Redw'ood has been found by a novelty manufacturer in the East, who is making adjustable stilts from this wood which he calls "Our Gang" stilts. The name is used by courtesy of the Hal Roach Studios, and the stilts are going to be used in one of the new Hal Roach "Our Gang" comedies.

The manufacturer chose Redwood because it is one of the lightest softwoods.

"M.tking" lmported Lumber Washington, March 17.-The National Lumber l\{anufacturers Association announced today that the Bureau of Customs in the Treasury Department has arranged a public hearing for Monday, April 12, in connection with the proposed change in the present practice of not requiring individual pieces of imported lumber to be marked to indicate the country of origin under Section 304 of the Tariff

Act of 1930.

The Lumber Association requested a change in the present practice because imported lumber has been used frequently in the filling of government contracts in violation of the Domestic Origin Act which requires that only articles produced in the United States shall be purchased or used by the government.

The original request was made on July L, 1936, and has been followed up by several supplementary statements and conferences betu'een Treasury officials and Lumber Association representatives. Several of the regional associations of lumber manufacturers have participated in the negotiations.

The National Lumber Manufacturers Association has made an outright demand for enforcement of the law in re-

spect of lumber. And it is understood that protests to the contrary have come from certain quarters. The outcome was a call for the open hearing so that the issue could be threshed out in the open. It is asserted by the lumber manufacturers that there is no valid reason why a law designed to protect American industry and labor and to main-

tain high standards of technical and commercial practice in the lumber industry should not be strictly enforced.

The hearing is to be held in Washington on April 12, which falls in the week following the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association. There is to be a meeting of the allied Forest Conservation Conference in the same week with the Association, and it is expected that the Conference will take some notice of the hearing, as foresters now lay much stress on the economic aspects of forestry.

The Tariff Act of 1930 provides that every "article" imported into the United States, and its immediate container and the package enclosing it, shall be marked, stamped and branded in legible English words in a conspicuous place.

The Secretary of the Treasury is given considerable authority in the details of marking. In case, at the time of importation of any article, it is not marked in accordance with the law, a punitive duty of 10 per cent of the value is imposed, and no such article will be delivered until it has been duly marked or stamped. There is a further penalty of a fine of $5000 for defacing, destroying, altering, etc., any mark.

The argument that lumber is a bulk product which cannot be classed as an "article" and is therefore not subject to the marking provision of the Tariff Act, is not accepted seriously by the lumber manufacturers. They say that the same argument would apply to practically everything irnported into the United States if it applies to lumber.

The purpose of this cffice is to provide the trade with detailed information and direct contact with the mill and factories at 'Westwood to facilitate the placing of orders and servicing deliveries.

Mr, Smith has been connected with The Red River Lumber Company at the mill and on the territory since 1913.

For the past five years, he represented them in the Middle West and Southern States, and prior to that covered California and the states west of the Rocky mountains. He has an intimate knowledge of Red River production and general sales pollcies.

Miss Berdine F'ord is Mr. Smith's secretary in the Los Angeles office. For the past year and a half, she was connected with the Saginaw & Manistee Lumber Co. at Williams, Ariz., and previous to that was private secretary to the late W. A. Pickering, of the Pickering Lumber Company, Kansas City.

Lumber Consumption Increasing Washington, March 17.-One of a book of 47 impressive and informing charts issued today by the National Lumber Manufacturers Association graphically records the fact that softr'vood lumber consumption per capita in the United States increased from 79 feet in 1932 to 148 (the latter item being partially estimated) in 1936.

At the olfices of the lumber association here it was said that there could be no more subst'antial proof of industrial recovery. The softwood figure is well supported by the hardwood consumption graph, which shows that the consumption per capita in the United States in 1936 was D feet as against 15 feet in 1932.

Another outstanding chart is one on Southern pine exports, which shows that they rose to 893,000,000 feet in 1927 and fell to 345,000,000 feet in 1936. The comparatively small Republ.c of Cuba took 153,000,000 {eet of Southern pine in 1924, descended to 18,600,000 feet in 1932 and got back as far as 43,400,000 feet in 1936. Another chart shows that Douglas fir exports got up to 1,450,000,000 feet in booming 1929 and down to 496,000,000 feet in depressed 1932.

Forest products contributions to car loadings were up as far as 42,500,000 tons in 1935, having been as low as 33,200,000 tons in 1933. These figures compare with 97,000,00O tons of car loadings in 1928. Total freight carried of

forest products was 222,ffi,W tons in 1923, 96,4m,n0

tons in 1936 dnd 79,500,000 in 1935.

These figures compare with 767,W,000 tons of products of mines carried in 1935, 380,300,000 tons of manufactures and miscellaneous in the same year and L43,26,000 tons of the products of agriculture.

Looking for a line on the industrial figure played by the lumber industry, the book of charts notes that lumber production was at its highest in 1906-9, at 4O,00O,00O,00O to 44,000,000,000 feet. Some authorities, the book says, think productron will go up from the recent low figure of 10,000,000,000 a year to between 25,000,000,000 and 30,000,000,000 feet, and can be sustained at that amount indefinitely.

Present sawmill capacity is given at 53,458,000,00O feet as compared with actual production of 10,151,000,000 feet in 1932 and 23,500,000,000 feet in 1936.

Among other data are: Total forest area 495,000,000 acres, of which 188,645,000 is saw timber acreage; of the latter, publicly owned is 62,38O,000 acres, and farm woodlands 35,640,000 acres.

The book of charts, described as "a panorama of essental lumber facts," provides an almost inexhaustible mine of information regarding the forest industries.

The annual report, released yesterday by William Wallace Mein, president, shows that the company's business improved substantially last year, with net sales totaling $1,370,667 as agarnst $804,179 in 1935. Earnings, before provision for depreciation and depletion, totaled $357,694.

During 1936 the company paid 911 per share dividends on the preferred stock, leaving $8 cumulative dividends at the end of the year. The dividend arrearage figure is being further reduced and the current dividend met with a $Z per share payment being made on the preferred March 31.

The company's balance sheet shows total assets at the end of 1936 of $2,732,852. Current assets totaled $846,039, of which $3n,232 was cash, as against current liabilities of $19O,4O8.

Shadow Shak€s---N ew Siding Arouses Enthusiasm

of Buildins Folks Whoever says "there is nothing new under the sun" just hasn't seen Shadow Shakes, the new Bear Brand product, manufactured by the Pacific Timber Company of Everett, Wash. George Bergstrom, president of the company, who was a recent California vtsitor says they have aroused more enthusiasm atnong building folks he has showed them to than any building material he ever saw.

Shadow Shakes are used for sidewalls, and are made from big Western Red Cedar logs. They are neatly fashioned on one side by machine process like the old hand-split shakes made by the early American pioneers. Evenly sawn on the other side, they lie snug and close.

They naturally lend themselves to the styles of early American, Colonial, Cape Cod, or English homes in their various typcs.

Shadow Shakes are manufactured in 16, 18 and 24 inch lengths, and are given a very wide exposure to the weather.

Short Lengths lrom the Retail Yards Tom Hambey Lumber Yard, Soledad, has moved from its old site on Palm Avenue to a new location at the corner of Front and Kidder Streets.

Goehring Lumber Company, Wilmington, are now located at their new site at G Street and Laguna Avenue where many improvements have been installed. Former location of the yard was at Alameda and Anaheim Streets.

Richard Goehring is the owner.

Linn Bros. Lumber Co. are su,ccessors to the Service Lumber Co., Long Beach. Fred R. and Roy L. Linn are the owners.

John Hardin, Yancey Lumber Co., Newman, was elected president of the Tres Rios Lumbermen's Club at its annual meeting. Other ofRcers elected were: James Gartin, Stanislaus Lumber Co., Modesto, vice-president; W. O. Mashek,

The Western Lumber Company has modernized the main office at their San Diego yard, and also the offices of their

branch yards, La Jolla Lumber Company and Coronado Lumber Company.

The main office at the San Diego yard has been lined with U. S. Gypsum tile insulation on the ceiling. The walls of one office are finished with U. S. Gypsum planked insulation; Fir-Tex insulation is used in another office, and ArtPly plywood has been installed in the main sales office.

The exterior of the office has been brightened up with a new coat of paint.

Jim Wisnom, Wisnom Lumber Company, San Mateo, left recently on a trip to Australia and New Zealand. He expected to be away three or four months.

H. H. Spaulding, Hemet retail lumberman, has been appointed a member of the committee which is perfecting plans for the fourteenth annual production of "Ramona," the historic play of early California. The 1937 performances

Wendell T. Robie, Auburn Lumber Company, Auburn, was one of three new members appointed to the State Board of Forestry by Governor Frank F. Merriam, March 9. Mr. Robie succeeds Swift Berry, Michigan-California Lumber Company, Camino, on the board.

The other new members are U. B. Tyler, Red Bluff, and Arnold Kunody, Los Angeles.

A fire destroyed a garage and building where building materials were stored at the Consolidated Lumber Co., Torrance, on IVIarch 11. The loss was estimated at $1,000, which was covered by insurance. The fire was caused by a back-firing truck.

D. A. Draney has been appointed manager of the FoxWoodsum Lumber Co. yard at Colton.

Pelton Lumber Corporation, 715 North San Vicente Boulevard, Los Angeles, has been succeeded by the Sherman Lumber Company.

K. R. Courter has been appointed manager of the FoxWoodsum Lumber Co. yard at Rialto. He was previously with the John Suverkrup Lumber Co. at San Bernardino.

Frank Redling is receiving congratulations from his many friends, the occasion being the arrival of a baby boy at his home on March 19. Frank is with the Fox-Woodsum Lumber Co. at Glendale.

George C. Burnett was re-elected president of the San Joaquin Lumbermen's Club at the annual meeting held at Fresno. Other officers re-elected were: S. P. Ross, vicepresident; Roy Clotfelter, treasurer; and Bernard Barber, secretary. Kenneth Smith, Lumber and Allied Products Institute, Los Angeles, addressed the meeting on "Grade-

Marking and Identification of Lumber." Ben Maisler was master of ceremonies.

A meeting of the stockholders of the Graves Co., Los Angeles, will be held at the company's offices on April 6. This will be the first stockholders'meeting of the new company.

California Redwood Association Has Attractive Display at Los Angefes

One of the outstanding displays of the lumber industry has just been completed in Los Angeles in the combined office and exhibit of the California Redwood Association on the ground floor of the Architects' Building, Fifth and Figueroa Streets.

This space, which embraces the entire Figueroa Street frontage of the building, combines the natural beauty of Redwood rvith practical application. It serves not only as headquarters for the activities of the Association, but as a working exhibit of the products of the Redwood industry.

Carroll T. Morton, for the past three years engaged in promotion of the use of Structural Grades of Redwood in

Southern California, has been named manager of the new office, and with an augmented staff, will direct all activities of the Associatron in the Southern area of the State.

L. L. Witty, field representative, and L. B. Graham, wood technologist, will also have their headquarters here. Mrs. R. F. Collins, office secretary. and Geo. C. Chatfield, complete the present organization.

ern Plumbing and Heating Journal was a paper entitled "Private Sewage Disposal Systems," which Max E. Cook, agricultural engineer with The Pacific Lumber Company, San Francisco. read before the annual convention of the Plumbing Inspectors, held at Hotel Oakland, recently.

Mr. Cook is a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and is recognized nationally as an authority on this subject. He is the designer of the Palco Redwood Sectional Septic Tank, now being widely used in private sewage disposal systems.

WITH CROCKETT AND RODEO YARDS Ralph D. Gorman, now associated with the Crockett Lumber Company and Rodeo Lumber Company, has had an interesting career in the retail lumber business. He worked for four years for the Security Lumber Company, a line yard concern with 45 yards in Saskatchewan, Canada; operated his own yard in Shawano, Wisconsin, his native state, for three years, and then sold out to go to war. When he returned from France he helped form the Penokee Lumber Company, a line of five yards with headquarters at Ashland, Wis., becoming secretary-treasurer and general manager for the company. He sold out these yards in 1928 and moved to California and for a number of years was connected with the General Tire and Rubber Company in San Francisco. He recently decided to get back in the retail lumber business.

April, 1937 , Edition of Red Book Ready During the past six months 2,@9 individuals and concerns are reported to have started in some division of the lumber business. These new concerns, it is said, can be divided into three distinct classes: dormant operations coming to life-old operations separating, making one or more additional establishments and-the brand new business.

The number of operations starting during the past six months is, however, almost offset by reason ol 1,719 individuals and concerns going out of business during that time.

The figures quoted above are taken from statistical data furnished by the Lumbermen's Credit Association Inc., and reflects some of the industry changes noted between the publication of their October, 1936, and April, L937, Credit Rating Books. fn commenting on the April, 1937, edition, Mr. Clancy, Jr., general manager, says : "The new April, 1937, rating book is not merely a revised list of industry names, but reflects 3,717 credit rating changes made during the past six months. It also contains the names of 2,W new industry traders who ventured into business since the publication of the October, 1936, book and in this same period there were deleted 1,719 industry traders who are no longer in business."

Quoting further from figures furnished by the Lumbermen's Credit Association Inc., it is interesting to note that during the past six months, 119 industry fires of size were reported to subscribers and 159 deaths made known in time to be of service to creditors. Also during this period 71 insolvency cases were called specifically to the attention of creditors.

A general idea of the vast amount of work and detail involved in operating a specialized Credit Reporting Service is indicated to some extent by the number of rating book changes the Lumbermen's Credit Association Inc., made during the past six months, these changes running better than 15 per cent of listed industry names. This percentage of change, large as it is, does not in any way, so we are advised, take into consideration the thousands of regular investigations and paying habit researches made by the Association that result in no change of rating, nor does it include the thousands of delinquent unpaid accounts items which voluntarily 'come to the Association by way of the monthly delinquent unpaid accounts reports which are assembled and published each month by the Lumbermen's

Credit Association Inc., for co-operating members of regional lumber producing and woodworking associations.

It is quite evident, from figures quoted by Mr. Clancy, that the Lumbermen's Credit Association fnc., keeps its records revised and up-to-date and as the industry's own specialized credit and sales service, continues to fill its important niche in the lumber and woodworking industry.

LUMBER INDUSTRY'S ONLY MOVIE STAR Arthur Twohy, Los Angeles wholesaler, who rates as the lumber industry's only moving picture star, appeared in the picture "Maytime" which stars Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.

Arthur's hobby is buying ancient automobiles and he has a fine collection. These old machines are in demand when the movies are making pictures that require old-time atmosphere. In "Maytime," Arthur appears at the wheel of a 1905 model, dolled up in his linen duster, cap, etc. Arthur is getting to be quite a movie actor.

CALLS ON HARDWOOD MILLS J. E. "Ted" Higgins, Jr., vice-president of J. E. Higgins Lumber Company, San Francisco, left about two weeks ago to visit the hardwood producing centers of the South and Middle West. He traveled by air to Los Angeles and by rail from there. He will leave New Orleans by boat April 12, to make the return journey by way of the Panama Canal.

OBITUARIES JOHN R. WOTRTNG John R. Wotring, who was associated with the lumber. business on the Pacific Coast for many years, passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home in Long Beach on March 10. He had been ill with influenza lrom which he had not entirely recovered.

Mr. Wotring was born in Nashville, Michigan, in 1878' He entered the lumber business at an early age in his home state, and later moved to Alabama. The opportunities of the Northwest called him to Montana in 1908, and he sold lumber for the old Northwestern Lumber Co. and Eureka Lumber Co. until 1916.

In that year he associated himself with Thos. Baird, William Harper, and George Harper to form the Baird-Harper Lumber Co. of Warland, Montana, with Mr. Wotring in charge of sales. Later the ownership changed somewhat, and the business lvas conducted as the Warland Lumber Co. until they sold out in the fall of. 1926 to the J. Neils interests. Mr. Wotring then came to live in Long Beach, Calif., where he looked after his various investments and interested himself in the affairs of the fine Long Beach rnunicipal recreation parks.

For the past three years, Mr. Wotring was manager of the City golf courses, to which he applied with his usual success his effi,cient business ability. IIe sponsored many juvenile golf tournaments for both boys and girls, assisted many young people to get started in the game' and in general put his chosen sport on a popular basis in the city.

Since 1926, when Robert W. Baird moved to Carlsbad.

Calif., and opened The Home Builders Store, Mr. Wotring has been interested with him in the business. Previous to his coming to California, Mr. Baird was in the lumber busi-

ness itt Motttana where he knew Mr. Wotring for many years.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ethel Wotring; a daughter, who is a senior at Stanford University; and a son, Ellsworth Wotring, lumber sales representative for Weyerhaeuser Sales Company, with headquarters at Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.

J. R. JOHNSON

J. R. Johnson, manag'er of The Diamond Match Company yard at Ukiah, passed away at his home on February 19.

He was ill only three days, succumbing to lobar pneumonia.

Mr. Johnson was born in Iowa in 1879 and had been a resident of California for the past eight years. He is sur-

R. W. MEADE pioneer Santa Ana business man' passed R. W. Meade, away at his home Sunday, March 14. He was 74 years

of age.

Coming to Santa Ana 44 years ago from Washington, Iowa, he had an active part in the development of the city.

In 1894, Mr. Meade and S. H. Pendleton formed the Pendleton Lumber Company which they operated for some time before selling out their interests. He was also identified with the citrus industry.

Mr. Deats was a native of Galveston, Texas, and had been a resident of Los Angeles for forty-three years.

He is survived by his widorv, Mrs. Rachel Deats; four sons, Levin S., Marshall H., John S., Jt., and Thomas S. Deats; and one daughter, Mrs. Rachel Parker.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, March 27,

FHA Drive to "Build Now"Opened in L. A More than 100,000 industrial and commercial workers in Los Angeles now lenting can afford homes in the $20@ to $3000 price range.

This is the estimate by the Federal Housing Administration, now conducting a campaign of education and publicity to interest these prospective home owners in the advantages of "building now."

In a bulletin to members on March 27, Kenneth Smith, secretary of the Lumber and Allied Products Institute, outlined the proposed F.H.A. program and urged co-operation.

He points out that the Institute's campaign for extending the use of grade-marked lumber is especially adaptable in connection with building lower-priced homes.

The Institute also announced that its licensing arrangements rvith the West Coast Lumbermen's Association for local grade-marking has been continued by the manufacturers for another year.

ERECTS MODERN OFFICE BUILDING Santa Cruz Lumber Company, Santa Cruz, has started construction of a new office building on the site of the old one, which has been moved and will be used until the new structure is completed.

Charles H. Haviland exhibited the sound picture of the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company showing the making of glass at their trvo big plants in the East. He also gave an interesting demonstration of the company's new casehardened plate glass, and answered a number of questions regardrng the differerrce bctlveen this and safety glass used in automobiles.

"Development of the Pan-American Airways" was the subject of a talk by Robert C. Hallett, traffic representative of the Pan-American Airways System. Mr. Hallett traced the development of the system through the ten years of its existence. He told of the start made with one Ford seventon plane in October, 1927, comparing this with the present day 25-ton Clipper ships, and hinting at 75-ton ships to be built in the near future.

Bert Bryan, general chairman for the Reveille to be held Aptil 23 at Hotel Leamington, Oakland, predicted success for this year's meeting.

1937 Clean Up-Paint Up Displays Ready

San Francisco, March 3.--California Redwood railway ties in service more than L7 years have outlived the usefulness of the rails they served in the streets of San Francisco and now, with the rails torn out, these untreated ties will remain as a solid foundatlon to the resurfacing of two important feeder streets to the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

The office of the City Engineer of San Francisco reports that redwood ties embedded in concrete in Gough and Sixth streets in 1919 and I9N were in such excellent condition this year that it was necessary. to remove only the rails to prepare the streets for resurfacing. Because of this several thousand dollars were saved in labor and materials in the street improvement program, it was reported.

California Redwood ties have been used by both the Municipal and Market Street railway systems in San Francisco since their inceptron and are still a standard specification for replacements. The records of the two transit systems show many instances of fuyear service for redwood, with the great bulk of ties embedded in street surfacing and tunnels, both severe tests to any species of timber.

Washington, March l4.*Approximately 50 per cent of all home mortgages insured by the federal housing administration amount to 76 per cent to 80 per cent of the appraised valuation of such properties. Analysis also reveals public preference for the long-term mortgage, particularly for new construction. The average term of an insured mortgage is slightly over 15 years, with the largest number trf mortgages written for l9r/2 years.
