Deadly Blast At OSB Plant

One worker was killed and a second injured by an explosion and fire at Louisiana-Pacific's OSB plant in Olathe, Co.

According to the Montrose CountY sheriff's office, a small blaze broke out near the plant's paint room at about l:30 p.m. Sunday Oct. 3. Employees continued working after the fire was extinguished, but 40 minutes later an explosion in the same spot caused a bigger fire. The body of worker Gary

Thornton, 53, was found near the source ofthe blast. Cause ofdeath has yet to be determined.

A 43-year-old employee was in stable condition after being treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital.

The plant was severely damaged.

Depot Pays MayoralAide

In hopes of securing a store in the city, Hope Depot has paid over $330,000 to the top political consultant of San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

City documents reveal the chain paid the money to Jack Davis, Brown's senior campaign adviser and presently a lobbyist. Brown has been lambasted for allowing big box retailers into city neighborhoods.

In refusing comment, Davis, who also served as Brown's 1995 campaign manager, referred calls to Home Depot, whose spokesperson said Davis was paid to "help find sites in San Francisco."

Brown said he could not recall speaking with Davis about the retailer's plans to build a 107,000-sq.-ft. store on a lO-acre site in Visitacion Vallev.

Hawaiian Panel Plant Coming

Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., Maui, Hi., manufacturer of reportedly over 60Vo of the state's sugar, plans to construct a $10 million composite panel board facility near its Puunene mill.

Set to open next fall, the facility will produce Compak premium composite panel boards made from bagassee (cane fiber), a sugar byproduct.

HC&S plans to annually produce 15 million sq. ft. of the light, moistureresistant board, and sell them locally and in the western United States and Canada.

Deck Cleaner Recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled around 420,000 bottles of Olympic Deck Cleaner, claiming ill-fitting caps.

According to the USCPS, air pressure build up inside the jugs can be expelled once the lids are removed, leading to eye damage or skin irritation.

The recalled product was sold in land 2.5-gallon, green-capped containers. Beige-colored capped jugs were not affected.

Sold between June 1998 through June 1999, the recalled deck cleaners have batch codes beginning with 06C through l2C, and 01D through 06D. For further information, call PPG. (888) 774-7332.
