Western red cedat for fabulous fences

r r r ESTERN red cedar fence proUU jects offer a dealer an opportunity to merchandise and promote not only cedar, but other items such as nails, hardware and finishes.
Fencing designs and styles are virtually unlimited, thanks to the variety of western red cedar fencing products available. And, because of its natural phenol preservatives and cell structure, western red cedar will provide your customers with years of durability and good looks.
Story at a Glance
Ways to sell more fence mate rials.. various designs for display. benefits to point out to shoppers . . . cross merchandising's part.
You can recommend western red cedar fencing products in either clear or knotty grades. Clear cedar offers a fine appearance, with limited characteristics such as knots and other markings. Knotty cedar features the same durability and workability as the clear products, but at a lower cost. Knotty products provide a more rustic look.
Samples of various fence designs will help your customers determine the style they wish to build. Panels of various designs or photos should be located near the fence materials. Cross merchandising of nails, hardware and finishes will complete the project selling concept.
One of the more popular fence designs you can showcase is the traditional board fence. This fence uses standard dimension cedar lumber for framing, and one-inch boards placed vertically for slats. Since boards are
available in widths ranging from four to 12 inches, the possibilities for the look your customers desire are greatly expanded.
For a variation, the boards can be installed horizontally. This design, which requires longer board lengths, provides an interesting look.
The addition of cedar lattice panels and decorative posts dresses up a fence. Pre-constructed framed lattice panels, placed at the top of the fence, are good suggestions for builders and do-it-yourselfers alike. Sheets of lattice can be cut and sized to individual needs. Or, your customer may have his own cedar lattice design in mind.
Ordinary posts can be modified to provide a professional look. The tops can be beveled, or cut at a 45-degree angle. Post caps can be created by attaching squares cut from cedar boards which are smaller or larger than the post.
In its natural state, western red cedar's color features warm brownred tones. If left to weather naturally, it will gradualiy turn to silver-grey. While western red cedar is naturally resistant to decay, application of stains or paints should be suggested to provide a longer service life and complement the color of the home exterior.
Western red cedar fences and other outdoor accessories, such as benches, planters and decks, offer profitable opportunities for additional sales and cross merchandising. Nails, hardware, cement, paints and finishes are essential to anv cedar outdoor project.
ls Douglas fir all it's cracked up to be?
URING 1988, 10.4 billion board feet of Douglas fir lumber, with a wholesale value of $2.68 billion, was produced in the West - enough lumber to build more than 800,000 single family residences.
Those are big numbers, but they're not confined to this country. Douglas fir is coveted in Japan where it is used both in Japanese traditional post-and-beam construction and U.S.-style 2x4 "platform" home building systems. In Australia and the United Kingdom, where Douglas fir lumber is often referred to as "Oregon pine," it is also prized. In Europe, the species is frequently chosen for millwork, providing a good market for clear grades.
So just what is it about Douglas fir lumber that gives it a multi-billiondollar market across the United States and around the world? Why has a lumber that was first commer-cially produced in 1828 at a small Oregon sawmill built by Oregon pioneer Dr. John Mcloughlin become so popular, so widely used?

To begin with, there is the material's amazing versatility. Consider the number of ways Douglas fir can be used in a typical house.
First, it's used for framingfor posts, beams, joists, studs and rafters.
Then it's used for sheathing and subflooring and concrete forms.
Additionally, it can be used as siding, which is both attractive and durable, meeting the records of virtually every other wood species commonly used in contemporary home building.
Moving inside the house, Douglas fir is used for cabinets, doors, door frames, windows and window frames, interior trim, mouldings and furniture. It also serves as a popular and serviceable softwood flooring, and can be finished, painted or used under linoleum and carpeting.
Story at a Glance
Outdoors it's used to build ladders. lattice work. decks. fences. storage sheds, arbors, gazebos, doghouses, retaining walls, planters and sandboxes.
Moving beyond the house itself, there are the heavy Douglas fir structural timbers used as railroad ties, in mines and in some buildings, Douglas fir posts, beams, stringers, joists, bracing, flooring and decking, rafters and roof decking make up trusses for factory and warehouse roofs.
On the farm, it's used for barn cornices, siding, boards and battens, chicken houses and feeders, cribbing, barn flooring, flumes, pens, gates and fences, chutes, granaries, troughs, hog houses and sheds.
But the question remains, why Douglas fir? What is it about this wood that makes it so incredibly widely used, so popular and, above all else, so versatile?
Begin with its strength. The wood is, pound for pound, one of the strongest of the softwoods, and its load-bearing capacity equals that of many mild steels, while being considerably lighter in weight. Douglas fir's strength makes it the nation's first-line wood for structural purposes.
It holds nails well. It holds paint. It has an exceptionally long life, even under conditions which foster decay. It glues well and is treatable.
Beyond these qualities, the wood's straightness, stiffness, ease with which it can be worked, and availability in a wide range of sizes and grades are each a good reason to value the wood highly. When they're combined in a single species, you have the reason(s) the wood is so universally prized and widely used.
There's one more reason. It's beautiful. The inherent beauty of Douglas fir makes it highly prized for virtually every kind of finish work.
That's why Douglas fir has been and continues to be a universally popular form of lumber. Customers can cut it and shape it and work it, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, they can get the size and grade they want where and when they want it, they can nail it and paint it, it can be treated, it's strong, stiff, durable, and looks good.
Worldwide, multi-billion-dollar market is based on wood's remarkable performance, not hype. working qualities and appearance put it at or near the top of softwood favorites.

usually provide faster construction time and lower installed costs than conventional stick-built lumber construction or steel bar joist systems.
An estimated 850/o of all housing in the United States contains some type of plant fabricated truss, joist, wall panel or other building component. Reasons for the upsurge in the market range from practical to aesthetic.
In addition to speeding up construction and lowering costs, the engineered products fill a need in
Engineered wood building components are not new. Glulam beams have been in use for more than 30 years. However, more of the manufactured products such as engineered floor and roof beams, headers, joists, rafters and purlins are in use today than in previous years. Growth of the market is not expected to stagnate or taper off. Weyerhaeuser predicts its component sales volume to triple in the next five years.
Field contacts and research conducted by Weyerhaeuser break increased demand into seven categories, according to Michael S. Cohen, Weyerhaeuser Engineered Components Business marketing administrative manager.
. Engineered wood components
o With increased demands for higher quality construction, builders and designers prefer the strength and stability of engineered building components (such as floor beams) to reduce customer complaints and callbacks.
o The industry's raw material mix is changing. Future supplies of old-growth timber are limited bY available resource and forest setasides, creating a declining supply of solid wood timbers and framing lumber in wider widths.
o Increasing preference for open interiors has more designers specifying exposed ridge beams and cathedral-type ceilings.
o More builders are diversifying, going beyond single family construction into markets such as multi family, remodeling, and light commercial construction where components are widely used.
o Pressure is increasing on manufacturers to provide more specialty, custom products designed to meet specific customer needs, as opposed to conventional commodity products.
o Builders and designers have become more confident about engineered wood components because they can, in many applications, carry higher loads at longer spans than conventional framing materials.
Engineered building components represent a big profit opportunity for home centers and retailers. Builder and contractor customers who are turning to custom homes, offices, restaurant, schools, shopping malls and other light commercial building need them to fulfill the design requirements of architects. Even remodelers will use them in building additions or updating to more current architectural designs.

Western woods fill the bill

111l HATEVER the needs of your UU customer, they can probably be satisfied with a western wood.
The principal lumber producing states of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Montana grow 30 species suitable for commercial use. Some of these 20 softwoods and 10 hardwoods are better known than others, but all have marketable qualities.
Western softwoods are suitable for construction, appearance and remanufacturing lumber. Several species such as Douglas fir and lodgepole pine are good for all three uses.
Many western softwoods are grown, harvested, manufactured and marketed together as dimension lumber because of similar performance properties which make them interchangeable in use and grading. Douglas fir-larch includes both species. Hem-fir is a combination of western hemlock and true firs (noble, white, grand, Pacific silver and California red). The white woods designation includes Engelmann spruce, true firs, hemlocks and pines. ES-AF-LP includes Engelmann spruce, Alpine fir and lodgepole pine.
Western alder is the best known of the l0 western hardwoods. Some of its uses are fine furniture, cabinets, upholstered furniture frames, veneer, pallets and chips for paper products. Tan oak, California black oak, madrone, chinkapin, Oregon

They equal or surpass woods produced elsewhere in the United States. For this reason, western woods are considered to be among the finest for construction and dimension lumber including engineered products. millwork, paneling, plywood, pallets, fencing and furniture.

Fingeriointed studs: efficient use of wood
6r TUDS 9 ft. long that stay ! straight under mosr condirrons can be a reality, not a dream, with fingerjointed studs manufactured from western woods.
Using multiple pieces of Doug fir, hemfir, Englemann spruce or lodgepole pine, the engineered product has superior dimensional stability because it uses lumber dried to 19% or less moisture content. This means it will stay straight with no warping, an advantage in hot climates. lt will also yard well.
Since the stud is engineered, it can be manufactured in any trim up to 120". Strength is another benefit. Glued joints are considered to be stronger than the original wood. Accepted by the model building codes and national building standards, fingerjointed studs are recognized as having the same characteristics as full length solid sawn lumber of the same grade and species and are graded accordingly.
Good for any stick construction, fingerjointed studs are gaining popularity in southern California and Texas with some used in Florida, Virginia, the Carolinas and other states with hot climates. They are not
a new product. Joe Belknap, sales manager at Trumark Industries, Spokane, Wa., says his company was a pioneer in fingerjointing studs l5 years ago. With the present concern for more efficient log utilization they are seen as filling a need. Solid material is not always available to meet special long length requirements.
Retailers and wholesalers who inventory the product say it sells fairly well although there are several negatives to overcome. Framers have a reputation ofobjecting to the appearance. However, an informal field study showed most of them like the performance, especially the strength and straightness.
Lonnie Goolsby, president, John E. Quarles Co., a Fort Worth, Tx., retailer, compared the acceptance of fingerjointed studs to that of OSB. "As the consumer becomes more accustomed to the product, more will be used," he commented.
His company inventories fingerjointed studs in 8,9 and l0 ft. lengths. "We have to have them," Goolsby said. They're not a big profit item, nor a premium item in the present Texas economy, just a close
margin with a normal markup, he added.
Acceptance has been slow in the Southern California nrarket. according to Randy Jackson, lumber buyer, James Lumber, Ifuntington Beach. "The guys who use them, like then1," he said. "lt's a personal preference. "
Bill Sullivan, (iolding Sullivan Lumber Sales, a'I'ustin, Ca., wholesaler, has had some problems. "lf they're dried right, they're okay," he explained. "lf not, you get problems."
Strict product certification requirements and hourly in-plant quality control are specified for structural glued dimension lumber products which include fingerjointed studs. Design values are the same as for solid sawn lumber of the same size. grade and species.

Fingerjointed studs gradestamped "Stud Use Only/Cert Glued Jnts" are assembled with an exterior type adhesive or water resistant adhesive conforming to special strength and durability requirements. Intended for use as a vertical end loaded member in compression where no sustained bending or tension loading conditions are present and where the moisture content of the wood will not exceed 19%, glued joints meet design requirements for short term bending loads for lateral forces such as winds, earthquakes or impact. The product is manufactured to meet the performance capability of end loaded bearing studs.
Glued product rules, sizes and specifications including mill certification, quality control and reinspection are under the auspices of the American Lumber Standards CommitteeIn the west, the Western Wood Products Association is the rules writing and quality control agency.

Western pressure treated woodts citing market potential
f f OST homeowner customers lfl know about pressure treated western wood because either they or someone they know used it to build a deck, fence, a retaining wall or a walk border.
Out beyond the backyard, you have potential customers in architects, engineers, and contractors who know pressure treated wood as foundation piling, dock construction material, sill plates, and much, much more. Pressure treated wood has become one of the construction industry's most essential building materials.
The wood the professionals rely on for its decay and termite resistance and long service life has been treated under pressure in a closed cylinder, or retort, just like that sold to d-i-yers and home builders. Chemical preservatives or fire retardants are forced deep into the wood cells, to protect it against fungi, insects, or fire.
Engineers familiar with pressure treated wood's high strength to weight ratio know that it is highly resistant to short duration loads that occur when earthquakes or hurricanes strike. Wood is resilient enough to resist battering by the ocean and docking ships, and is naturally resistant to the destructiveness of salt water. Specifiers know it won't rust or spall, and is significantly less affected by corrosion. That is why, historically, it has been used for constructing terminals, marinas, bulkheads, and dolphins, both in fresh and salt water.
In coastal waters where marine borers such as teredo, pholad, or Limnoria tripunctqla are present, industry standards require that wood in the water must be pressure treated with a preservative that will resist the local borer hazards. This is often a combination of creosote and a waterborn preservative.
In commercial buildings, pressure

treated wood is specified for foundation piling, foundation sillplates, exterior decks and railings, and for application in fertilizer storage facilities. Where wood is permanently exposed to the weather, building codes require either naturally resistant or pressure treated wood.
Architects and designers specify pressure treated wood for a broad range of recreational applications in parks, golf courses and playgrounds, for bulkheads, gazebos, observation towers, light standards, play structures, and benches.
The inherent structural efficiency of pressure treated pole frame construction for resisting wind loads makes this method of construction popular for warehouses, bulk storage, equipment storage, and industrial buildings. In buildings such as those used for bulk fertilizer storage, pressure treated wood successfully resists the corrosive action ofthe fertilizer.
Fire retardant treated woods are another market for a building material dealer to pursue with professionals. Engineers like the life saving features of fire retardant treated (FRT) wood. Chemicals in these treatments react in the event of fire to form a protective char which prevents wood from igniting, minimizes flame spread and reduces smoke development.
These are but a few of the opportunities to sell treated wood. If you're just concentrating on sales to homeowners, you're missing a chance for some big orders.
Wood preservers sentenced in counterfeit gradestamp case
ln ULMINATING over three V years of investigation and legal work, Judge Charles Simpson sentenced Vince Escue, Harvel Escue, Alvin Escue and the Escue Wood Preserving Co. (EWP) on a charge of trademark infringement on July 7, 1989, in Louisville, Ky.
All four defendants (three individuals and the corporation) had earlier pleaded guilty to one felony count of trademark infringement based on their misuse of a Timber Products Inspection, Inc. (TP) gradestamp, according to C. Cleve Gambill, the First Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

The three individual defendants were sentenced to probation for a period of -three years. As a special
condition of probation, they are required to actually serve 90 days in a federal facility. In addition, all four defendants were required to forfeit $25,000 (a total of $100,000) to the United States through the U.S. Attorney's Office Asset Forfeiture Fund.

Universal Buys Oregon Plant
Universal Forest Products has purchased Willamette Industries' Industrial Wood Products division, Woodburn, Or.
The sale includes buildings, equipment, inventory and 8- I /2 acres of land. Bobby Hill, vice president of manufacturing operations for Universal's Far West Co., Huntington Beach, Ca., will administer the property. Five division sales persons will remain under the new ownership.
The Oregon remanufacturing acquisition makes Universal "truly continental," says Universal c.e.o. William G. Currie. "We now operate from l7 states plus Canada, ranging from Massachusetts to Southern California and Florida to Oregon. The Woodburn plant will continue to serve its region through manufacture and distribution of all kinds of forest products."
Weyerhaeuser To Close Plant
Weyerhaeuser Co. will sell or close an I-beam plant in Albuquerque, N.M., as part of its refocusing effort.
If a buyer is not found, the plant will be closed about Dec. l, according to Michael Cohen.
The company will continue to supply engineered building components to residential and commercial construction markets and is developing alternative sources of supply.
West Feels Hunicane's Effects
The devastation of Hurricane Hugo has caused rising prices and strong demand for plywood reaching as far as the West.
"We're having to find new suppliers from across the country to meet the demand," says Stacy Hardee, Buck Building Supply, Charleston. S.C.
SCR, Inc., Lake Oswego, Or., recently sold two cars of fir plywood into Charleston. "lt's the first time in about l5 years we've shipped sheathing plywood in a CD grade into the Deep South," said Tom Crabtree.
The hurricane's Sept. 2l attack on the Carolinas caused up to $4 billion in insurance claims and downed about 6.7 billion board feet of timber, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Whatever happened to . . .?
Bv Matt MoulderThe summer of 1989 was characterized by more bad news than qood news for the lumber industry. There was much talk of mills ihutting down permanently and much worry about a supply of timber ade-quate to sustain the mills remaining. Perhaps it would serve a purpose to reflect on some of the less serious things that took place.

In July there was the Mosquito Festival held every year in Paisley, Oreqon. Strange though it may seem, they really do have such a celebration in the"small faiming community located near Klamath Falls in Southern Ores,on. Paisley has more than its share of the pesky little insects and thEy apparently have a light hearted attitude towaid the problem. In conjunction with the festivities, a queen contest is held and, are you ready for thisthe winner is given the title Ms. Quito.
Our Yuba City correspondent, Randy UcNally, tells us that the peach and pear harvest there was a big success this year. The annual harvest festival included a beauty cont6st and competition to find the qrower with the bis, gest pear. Interestingly, one lady farmer won both Eontests. Randy aliS advises that the iearby community of Cridley has put up a sign on the highway throug,h town proclaiming to all passers by that"Cridley is th"e sister city of te puke, New Zealand. Now there is an image building P.R. gimmick if I ever saw one!
Money Magazine,"followingithe leiad of Randy McNally, recently came out with their list of the best and worst places to live in the U.S. We are sorry to report that Yuba City made the bottom ten on this one also.
El Dorado County, the county that we reside in, was not without its share of notoriety last summer. One of our County Supervisors made headlines in newspapers all over California by being convicted of growing marijuana on his ranch near Placerville. He was a well resfected-and vbry popular member of the community. He will be goihg off to prison soon for a few years and some of his friends in the area are planning a going away party for him. Naturally, it will be a pot luck dinner.
The North Coast area of Northern California is buzzing about Louisiana Pacific's recently announced plan to build a wobd products reman. plant in Mexico, between Ensenada and Tiiuana. Creen products will be shipped by barge from L.P.'s mills in the Eureka, Ca., area and will be dried and proceised at the Mexico plant. The only observation that we wish to make, and we are sure you agree, is that it would be a terrible oversight if the new mill does not come out with a siding called "pattern Tijuanaleven." Agreed?

BILL FISHMAN Bill Fishman & Affiliates 'l'1650 lberia Place San Diego, Ca.92128AVERY successful magazine pubfrl lisher once told me that the first lesson he was taught in the publishing business was "subscriptions are sold one-at-a-time!" I think of that often and frequently apply it to situations in the lumber and building material business.

This is a lesson that has even more meaning when trying to sell big users.
As a consultant I am challenged to increase the sales volume for a retail lumberyard. Typically, I first strive to expand the d-i-y business by:
(1) Selling more ol the existing assortments
(2) Expanding the geographic pull
(3) Increasing the merchandise selection to enlarge the size of each ticket
Then I advise my client to solicit new business lrom the professionals!
The prolessional user of product cate-
gories carried by home centers and building material dealers is a mixed bas including:
o Purchasing agents at large & small industrial companies
. Property managers
. Contractors
o Commercial oflices
o Sign companies
. Architects
o Etc.
The second best way to get a message to these prospective customers is by direct mail. In many markets mailing list houses can isolate these businesses bv SIC codes.
The best way to make contact with these big users is by phone. When I moderate focus groups of professionals, I ask two questions that almost always get a "No" answer: "Did you ever get a phone call from any dealer asking you to allow him to be your lumber and building material supplier?" and "Would you object if you did get such a call?"
The second "No" is usually followed with a "l'd welcome it and all things being equal I would give them all the business I could."
Interestingly, the current United Airline tv commercial, "Our oldest customer just fired us," brings home the same point. A bit of personal attachment does much to bind a relationship and make it less vulnerable to low price competition.
Extra service keeps your customers your customers. Sometimes extra service takes unusual forms. West Buildins Material Cenrers in Arlanta once boastel the longest lunch counter in town. A pot ol grits was constantly warming on the stove and the large sign behind the counter read something like, ',lf your company account is up-to-date, enjoy breaklast and lunch FREE at West's!" Guess where the contractor's trucks went when the drivers were sent to oick up some additional material for a ionstruction job.
lf the price is right if you're just a little friendlier and show you care if you deliver a little extra value your customers will drive right past your competition to get to you. If your competition's customers know about your price, and that you care about them. and about your "pot of grits" they too may drive on by the competition.

EECENTLY a group of us went to a fI local eatery for dinner. We had reservations, arrived promptly and, although no one was ahead of or behind us, we were asked to wait until a table could be readied. Very typical of restaurants, particularly on the weekend.
After we were seated, our waiter came ceremoniously to the table, introduced himself and suggested we might like our favorite libation while considering all the menu possibilities.
Immediately after taking the orders for drinks, even before he had dispatched them to the bar by portable computer, he asked if we were ready for
dinner. When we replied that a moment or two after the drinks arrived might be a better time, he stormed away, certainly thinking that here was a group he would rather not have had to wait on.
The treatment we received was annoying. It affected our feeling about the restaurant, reduced the total sale and hence lowered the waiter's tip.
The latter fact didn't seem to phase him, but the size of the gross sale might have made the owners feel better had it been another $30 to $50.
How many times have we all experienced this in different establishments, be they restaurants, department stores, or even lumber or home centers? I recall one instance where a firm did not make a $1000 cash sale, because of a sales clerk's "hurry up I have other things to
do" attitude. Three days later, I found what I wanted at a store with helpful sales personnel. They made the $1000 sale within a matter of minutes.
What are we talking about? Service attitude toward the customer. Dealing with a wide range of people with different skill and knowledge levels makes being in the lumber and building material business more challenging than a lot of other businesses. We need to train our workers to ask the right questions, be quick and be helpful, but not last and uncaring.

Inattentive service can reduce the size or totally eliminate the sales of the moment and sales in the future. Customers quickly shy away from any business that isn't courteous and helpful unless the price is very low. And the newspaper lists those low priced firms every Monday morning, under bankruptcies.
Although we may think it's the lumber and building material business, we are in the people business. Call it service, customer awareness, employee awareness or whatever, it's a necessity if your business is to survive.

Application. Use plywood, lumber; flakeboard orfiberboard sheathing and a continuous vapor barrier. Install redwood siding with quality hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum or stainless steel nails that penetrate 11/2" into the stud, and/or stud, and solid wood sheathing. Do not use finish or casing head nails.

Finishing. A brush applied finish is recommended for best performance. Stains, paints or water repellents can be used with good results. Semi-transparentstains or water repellents work best on saw-textured surfaces. DO NOT use shake and shingle paints or lowluster alkyd paints or varnishes. Detailed application and finishing instructions are included in siding packages and will also be sent upon request. 'ff f 35:T H::!11ff:?; 1: J:::t?: :J'[:ilTfff:y;f :lu::

OPERAIING OPPORTUNITIES
WALLY LYNCH Paid Associates PO. Box 741623 Dallas. Tx.75243I N AUGUST and September, this colI umn discussed Art Hood's 20 things to do before cutting prices. The response has been enormous, as letters and calls continue to pour in. And the number one question concerns the twentieth item on the listoffset a concession, which mentioned compensatory pricing. Compensatory pricing means that other sales must be made at a sufficiently higher-than-average markup to offset profit loss on sales leading to slippage or leakage of net profit. The loss of profit could have come from discounts, meeting competition, under pricing or providing uncompensated services to the customer.
The formula is simple and direct. Combine the percentage of profit desired with the cost of doing business as a percentage of sales to calculate the required
gross margin. For example: DESIRED PROFIT COST OF DOING BUSINESS 210lo GROSS MARGIN NEEDED 300/o Slippage and leakage is what we call today the difference between planned and realized (or maintained) margins. When you budget 300/o gross margin and price for it without factoring in slippage and leakage, you will come up short of your target margin and profit. The idea is to measure the differences identified in previous years and include it in the formula. It now looks like this:
DESIRED PROFIT 9olt NET PROFIT LEAKAGE 5o/o COST OF DOING BUSINESS 2I% GROSS MARGIN NEEDED 35o/o
An additional ingredient in compensatory pricing is a varying price point for the same item depending upon the service costs involved in selling that item. Also, margins are varied from the average for all items depending upon services required to complete the sale.
Full service dealers will recosnize
shingles and wallboard as classic examples of like items requiring multiple prices. One price is for take with, another price for delivery and still another for custom placement. Yet it doesn't end here. It also seeks to recognize pricing requirements for carloads shipped direct at one extreme and a twelfth of a dozen for cash taken with by the customer at the other extreme.
FREE OFFER
Art Hood's list of competitive services and ways competitors can chisel and skimp on them is available to those who send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to WallY Lynch, Paid Associates, P.O. Box 141623. Dallas. Tx. 75243
The specific pricing by item approach, after these preliminaries, is similar to today's variable pricing. In a lesser known yet more sophisticated vein, compensatory pricing is also much like direct profit profitability pricing (DPP) widely used in grocery retailing.
Art Hood was not only ahead of his time in our industry, he probably also provided the rationale for many dealers to abandon unprofitable activities for money making substitutes.

Mike Huycke, Westem Lumber SalesTemporary Timber Compronrise
With a long term solution still to come, forest industry spokesmen welcomed the interim compromise reached by Congress on the Pacific Northwest's timber supply crisis.
"lt's a very tenuous solution," John Hampton of Willamina Lumber Co., chairman of the Northwest Forest Resource Council, said. "The environmentalists got everything they asked for in the way of safeguards for the spotted owl and for old-growth timber, It's up to them now to make a good-faith effort to
see that the agreement is implemented."
Bill Shields of Willamette Industries, chairman of the American Forest Resource Alliance, paid tribute to what he called the "Herculean effort by the Northwest's congressional delegation to hammer out a compromise acceptable to both houses of Congress." He said much credit should go to the thousands of Oregonians and Washingtonians in timber dependant communities who worked hard to make their voices heard.
"The delegation had difficult
The Merchant Magazine

choices to make in trying to satisfy the concerns of all sides," Shields said. "ln the negotiations, the preservationists tried to impose terms so harsh that they would have literally shut down many of the region's timber dependent communities."
"At the very least, the debate in Congress has awakened a greater awareness of the importance of this region's timber resource in supplying the long term wood products needs of our nation," Hampton said. "At a time when the American dream of affordable housing is becoming more remote, Congress must somehow assure this region a secure supply of federal timber for building homes for a future generation of Americans."
Pointing to the fact that the national forests hold half of the nation's softwood timber supply, he said after the Sept. 29 vote, "it is time to get common sense and reason back into the way the federal lands are managed."
Yard Burglarized 3 Times
A selective thief who takes only "very expensive" oak boards is being sought for a recent string of robberies at Chula Lumber, National City, Ca.
During a six-week period in June and July, Chula Lumber was burglarized three times under identical circumstances, according to the StarNews. The culprit used his dual-tired truck and a chain to pull a heavy gate beam to one side, drove into the yard and loaded a certain amount of the same choice lumber.
About $2,500 to $5,000 in wholesale lumber has thus far been stolen.
Chula Lumber operators suspect the thief was surprised in his latest robbery, since he left behind a portion of his load and his flatbed truck's removable wooden sidegate. Since the July 14 burglary, no further incidents have been reported.

Earthquake
p.m., driver George Donovan first saw the freeway before him buckle. He and his rig dropped 25 feet to the level below, the truck landing on its windshield. The tractor broke into three pieces, bursting the gas tanks and causing the battery to explode.
Despite hand and face cuts and two fractured vertebrae in his back, Donovan freed himself, grabbed the fire extinguisher and started to put out the fire. When his extinguisher went dry, he borrowed one from another truck and finished dousing the blaze.
Ignoring his injuries, he worked diligently helping others escape their vehicles and administering first aid. Ordered off the damaged structure by the California Highway Patrol, Donovan hitchhiked back to White Brothers' nearby yard to see what else he could do to help. He didn't go to the hospital until the next morn-
ing, and he is recovering satisfactorily.
Says White Brothers'owner Don White Jr., admiringly, "We're talking about a Medal of Honor-quality individual here."
Many firms reported only a short surge in business, as residents scrambled for plywood to patch shattered homes before a storm moved in the following weekend. "We were busy the first couple of days, especially with plywood," says Mike Butcher. San Lorenzo Lumber Co. "We went through all our batteries and flashlights, and sold out all our generators in the first 20 minutes."
Businesses expect to feel the demand for long term repairs in the coming months.
For now, the most widespread effect is traffic with main transportation arteries impassable due to buckling or collapse. "We have to find out which roads are open, reroute our shipments and avoid rush hours. It all, of course, increases time and cost," said Joe Casella, Casella Transportation, San Leandro.

Counterfeiters Jailed

the unauthorized possession and use of TP gradestamps, as well as the creation and use of counterfeit TP gradestamps. A written corporate admission and stamp creation records were obtained on May 14, 1986. Subsequently, TP cancelled its AWPB Quality Marking Contract with Escue Wood Preserving Co.
TP made a concerted effort to locate and correct substandard lumber in four states, alerted the FBI to the violation of the Federal Trademark Act, and participated in an FBI search and seizure at the EWP facility in Millwood, Ky.
"The counterfeit stamps were used at least from 1985 to 1986," Sibert said. Lumber found bearing the counterfeit marks was significantly below grade. It is estimated that between 500,000 and 3,000,000 board feet of lumber was fraudulently gradestamped. "The majority of the illegally stamped material appeared to have been sold to an innocent purchaser, and was discovered in locations in lllinois, Indiana and Kentucky," Sibert added.
Sibert praised Scott Cox, the Assistant United States Attorney in Louisville, and Gary Perkins, of the FBI. for their dedicated efforts to bring this case to justice. "TP has successfully used the 1984 Trademark Act numerous times since 1986, primarily in the Southeast, but also in the Southwest regions of the USA," said Sibert.
He added "TP's aggressive pursuit of any trademark infringement, and our successful prosecutional track record, coupled with the criminal aspect of the fraudulent acts and the potential for treble damages, should be strong deterrents to those who contemplate the unauthorized use of either the Timber Products Inspection (TP) trademark or any American Lumber Standards Committee agency logo."

Alaskan Oil Spill's Side Benefit
In addition to its effect on the environment, wildlife and fisheries, the Alaskan oil spill also disrupted the local construction industry, creating an unprecedented demand for wood products.
Many retailers and wholesalers worked 16 hour days to meet the need for lumber, structural panels and other building products used during the clean up to construct ramps, bins, shacks and oil booms, notes the American Plywood Association.
While injecting a sudden $500 million into the slowly rebounding local economy, the sudden demand created supply problems for builders and remodelers dependent on a steady source of wood products.
Window Gertification Label
The American Architectural Manufacturers Association has revised its certification program for new construction and replacement windows.
Special periodic quality control testing and a gold and black certification label applied to all certif ied products are the key changes. John Gurniak, AAMA technical director, says, "Now, with these revisions to the program, the AAMA label is more than ever a visible positive assurance of performance quality."

Since the predominant home construction in Arizona is concrete slab, the building codes require redwood or pressure treated lumber for plates and ground treatment spraying.
I hope the pest control industry will clean up their act. I also urge the governor to place a wood industry representative on the Structural Pest Control Board, since wood is the main target lor termites. That representative would be a valuable addition.

PRESSURE TREATED WOOD ANALYSIS ASSURES ITS QUALITY
Require AWPB certification on each piece.
Not all pressure treated wood meets industry standards. "Treated to Refusal" means it probably does not meet recognized standards.
Specify that each piece must bear the AWPB mark-your assurance that the material has been produced under triple tiered quality control:
r Internal plant quality control
r Certified agency inspection
r AWPB overview inspection and laboratory analysis.
