Too Busy for What?

n N ONE OF OUR periodic field survey V trips, we happened to encounter three times in one day that particular irritant to the serious shopper: the clerk too "busy with business" to give adequate attention to the paying customer.

It would be less surprising if these minor moments in life occured in run-down, second rate stores. Such was not the case. Each time, they were in home improvement stores that would be considered top notch in any neighborhood in the country. None was a discount operation where excellent service is not really expected.

Certainly what is important here is not the few moments of minor irritation. but rather that otherwise (apparently) well run facilities have so misordered priorities that paperwork, inventories and even, in one case, an employees' meeting, resulted in floor salespersons "too busy" to help the serious buyer. It was a disturbing thing to encounter as we had recently heard reports of an increase in such inattention to customers.

This sort of thing is bound to happen once in awhile in the best run stores. But employees

of more than one major Western retailer tell us that paperwork and other non-sales related work has increased noticeably. Good employees, who really care about the calibre of customer service they perform, are especially put off by this type of sloppy management thinking. It is occasionally heard that top sales people finally depart in frustration for firm's which truly appreciate the value of an excellent sales clerk. Management's attitude is even harder to understand when you consider how scarce and valuable are productive sales people, wherever they are in any organization.

Some people think the decline of service reflects a downturn in employee attitude toward the customer. We doubt it. Rather it looks to us that in most cases the unacceptable actions of sales people are more often the result of bad practices and attitudes coming down from the top of the organization. If the boss doesn't give a hoot, will anyone else?

Thorough sales training, with full, continuing followup and a commitment to.make certain bad practices don't reoccur is still the best way to make sure the customer buys this time and returns to buy again.

Redwood Promotion: Natural QualitY, Durability

California Redwbod Association's new four-page ad telling retailers, wholesalers and home center dealers about redwood's special natural qualities that have made it the longtime favorite for decks, trellises and outdoor projects and the premium product for paneling and siding.

Just part of the CRA's new redwood promotion program for 1980, the full color insert will appear in national and regional trade publications with the message that redwood's natural qualities and longterm performance make it one of the most demanded, marketable and profitable specialty products.

All heart redwood's natural resistance to decay, redwood's resistance to warping, checking and splitting and its low maintenance and natural beauty gives dealers many marketing opportunities for successful high profit, high volume sales.

The CRA's 1980 promotions will also continue to build a steady, pre-

sold demand for redwood with an extensive advertising program that will reach architects, builders and specifiers as well as consumers.

For specifiers, the CRA will continue to run its two-page color ad on the variety of redwood grades and applications in major specifier publications. A new ad for builders on using redwood garden grades for multi-unit amenities will appear in national building trade publications.

Also, two new consumer ads on redwood clear and garden grades will appear in publications such as Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, House & Garden, Popular Mechanicsand Woman's Day ldeas.

Newspaper and magazine publicity will continue to feature ideas for using redwood garden grades for decks, trellises, and outdoor living environments. For the fourth year, spring publicity will feature CRA's successful Redwood Design-aDeck Plans Kit, a complete do-ityourself deck design package. Over 90,000 kits have been sold as gasoline costs and shortages increase consumer interest in home improvement and stay-at-home outdoor living. Fall publicity will feature ideas for using redwood clear grades for paneling, siding and quality remodeling projects.

To support the increasing demand for redwood design ideas and sales aids, the CRA will introduce an eight-page color booklet on using redwood garden grades for spa, pool and hot tub environments, adding to a growing library of design and technical information, do-it-yourself construction tipsheets and sales aids that are available to dealers.

The promotions are timed to give dealers an early start on planning, buying and inventorying redwood lumber products for successful promotions andtie-ins that coincide with the spring building season. For a free sample package ofthe sales and design aids, dealers can write California Redwood Association, Dept P-80, One Lombard St.. San Francisco. Ca.94111.

1980 newspaper and magazine publicity by CRA will continue to feature ideas for using redwood garden grades for decks and outdoor living environments. To support increasing demand for redwood design ideas and sales aids, the association will introduce an 8-p. color booklet on using redwood for spa, pool and hot tub environments.

So, You Think You Are Running Your Business!

f t is probably accurate to state that most businessmen I have a thorough understanding of the income statement relative to their business. After all, the income statement measures performance: the type of performance we want, sales and income. The income statement is watched very closely in most businesses. Are sales increasing? Are expenses in line with volume? Are gross margins holding with product mix, competitive situations and inventory levels? Is operating profit where it should be? Does all of this sound familiar? You bet!

If an equivalent amount of time was spent analyzing the balance sheet (you know, the document that Iists assets and liabilities). most businessmen could avoid financial difficulty or forecast the problems ahead and act to lessen the impact. There are varying degrees of knowledge of the balance sheet and unfortunately, it is too often left to the accountants to manage that part of the profit equation.

Yes, the balance sheet is part of the profit equation! Your net income could grow 1006 this year and that may be satisfactory, but if your inventory also grows 100h, your cash flow could be less and your return on

investment could go down. Sound familiar? In too many businesses, it is all too familiar.

When a business is started, two important considerations are prevalent. How much do we have to invest to make a reasonable and acceptable return and will we have enough cash flow to meet our obligations and sustain operations? As the business grows and develops over several years, we must remember these initial considerations and establish and monitor objectives for both.

To successfully manage a business for the long term, we must constantly review and manage both the balance sheet and income statement. They are interrelated documents of information and measurements of performance.

Let's take a hypothetical company, which we will call Building Materials Corporation. Management reviews the income statement and makes the following observation:

how

The income statement reflects impressive results for the current year. Net income has increased 280/o on a sales increase of I lol0. Reviewing the balance sheet for the same periods adds another dimension.

The Merchant Magazlne
Sfory at a Glance lmportance of the balance sheet as part of the profit equation.
it can forecast cash needs. strategy and tactics to apply to cash flow problems relating to inventory, accounts receivable and gross margin.

Why was it necessary to increase inventory 260/o and receivables 1906 to achieve a sales increase of 110/o? The maximum increase for these two balance sheet accounts should have been l106 - equal to the sales increase. But at the same rate of increase as sales, inventory would show no turnover improvement. If the additional sales were achieved at the same inventory level as the prior year, turnover would have improved significantly. A closer examination of inventory and receivables reflects some important changes.

While sales and income performance was excellent, cash flow was negative requiring a reduction in the previous year cash balance.

Managing the balance sheet can solve cash flow problems. Let's examine what could have happened to the cash balance as a result of the changes in inventory and receivables.

Reduction in cash balance last year to this year Cash would have increased if, Receivables collection period remained unchanged $12,000

If the balance sheet had been managed carefully and both inventory and receivables had been maintained at the same ratios as the prior year, the result would have been $59,000 more cash available. Rather than a decrease in the cash account of $21.000. cash would have increased $38,000.

If the additional sales this year of $300,000 were achieved at the same inventory level as last year, further improvement would have occurred:

Many businesses do not prepare a Statement of Changes in Financial Position, which simply explains the sources and uses of cash or the flow of cash from the income statement to the balance sheet.

Ifyour business does not use this accounting document in conjunction with the income statement and balance sheet, you should start including it in your financial information package.

Awareness of the impact of balance sheet changes is vital to successfully managing your business. The income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement report on history: what happened last year, last month. Of even greater importance is the necessity to project what may happen next month, next quarter or next year.

A business with a growing sales volume and satisfactory warehouse inventory management should be able to consistently improve inventory turnover. Thus, if the additional sales were achieved at the same level of inventory as last year, $80,000 less cash investment would have been required. The turnover improvement factor would have added $33,000 to the $59,000 cash availability.

Using the information presented, let's determine what happened to cash flow.

Readers desiring .further, detailed information on cash.flow and return on investment can obtain excellent booklets on these sub.jects.from the Certainteed Corp., P.O. Box 889, Waco, Tx. 76703. Include $4 to cover printing and postage; make checks payable to Certainteed Corp. - ed.

The importance of cash requirements planning cannot be underestimated. Careful attention paid to this often overlooked detail can be very rewarding. Rewarding in the sense that the expenses can be controlled and frequently reduced, inventory purchases can be targeted to meet cash availability, better judgment can be made on receivables policy regarding both collection effort and individual account sales and probable trouble areas can be identified in advance.

Preparing for successful Holiday Season selling

llt ITH Christmas season sales

UU bringing in as much as 200/o of a store's yearly total, it makes sense for a retailer to develop a holiday sales campaign rather than fall into a hit and miss program.

NOW is the time to finalize your plans and ready the store for the onslaught of customers.

Holiday preparations are easier when you follow a theme. A single idea tying store decoration, sales and advertising together makes the merchandising job more enjoyable and presents a unified image of the store to your customer.

Some stores seem especially suited to the country approach to Christmas. Others adapt well to the modern theme with lots of silver foil and crisp displays. Other theme ideas are back-to-nature. holidav songs, Santa's workshop, adveni calendar, l2 days of Christmas or holiday greeting cards. Color is important to a theme. Utilize your corporate colors if appropriate or the traditional holiday tones.

Whatever theme you select, begin at the front entrance with window and door decorations and continue through each department using decorations to highlight merchandise, point out ideas for gifts, and lead the customer from section to section.

Key your store music, if it is not programmed from the outside, to the holiday. Make use of the p.a. system for announcements of special offers or activities within the store. Invite community singers or school groups to provide musical entertainment.

Organize your special holiday services and make the public aware of them. Decide on extra shopping hours. Check the supply of gift cer-

tificates and order more if necessary. Work out a systemized lay-away procedure, set up a larger than usual area to house it, and plan for someone to man it. If you offer gift wrapping service, arrange for the supplies, location, and personnel. Provide a special shopper service to aid those unable to shop for themselves or take care of long lists of gifts purchased by companies. Establish your services, locate signs throughout the store announcing that they are available, have clerks mention them to shoppers, and include them in your advertising. People need and want special service to help them through the busy season. It can be a strong point for your store.

Guide to holiday selling...time to plan decor, services, employee training. .. clean-up for end of season.

Although all the store will be decorated and keyed to supplying gift and holiday needs, it is necessary to have a special section where trim-a-home items are grouped with holiday cards, gift wrap, artificial trees, paper and plastic party goods. Remember the ordinary, but necessary items such as extension cords. Assign clerks to this area who are imaginative and

helpful. They can bolster sales by suggesting add-on items and guiding customers who are unsure of their needs.

Merchandise the season in every department. This is the time not only for gifts, but for last minute repairs to spruce up the house for the holidays, and purchase of items for entertaining. Party essentials such as punch bowls, glasses, super-size turkey roasters sell as well. New faucets for the bathroom. fresh towels for the kitchen. or a new doormat become important as the homeowner readies for guests.

Spark gift ideas in the tool section. Hang stockings bulging with small items such as tape measures, hammers, and screw drivers. Displqy power tools with bright gift boxes to put across the idea that they are giftable. Even a snow shovel can be merchandised in the company of a jolly snowman. A tree hung with an assortment of hardware will decorate and remind customers of needed items.

Small appliances and houseware sections are naturals for gifts. Display them with accessories to sug- gest add on purchases. Set up model tables, gift corners. vignettes to spur sales.

The garden section comes alive with trees, poinsettias, wreaths, !olly, and.plants wrapped in shiny foil for gifts. Pets, too, are remembered at Christmas. Prepare your animal section with gift suggestions.

Don't neglect a single department. Each has possibilities for sales. To be sure that your customers get the message, post a gigantic Christmas list in a promi-

A widespread variety of reactions in the industry followed the Federal Reserve Board's Oct. 6, prescription ef credit tightening to aid the U.S.'s inflation sickness. .. they ranged from "especially severe" future developments; to"let's wait and see'." to the Westshoutd be "largely immune" to much of the downturn. .

The cost qf $$ soared immediately: the prime rate to a record l5tAo/r,, the prime mortgage rate to l4oh and T-Bills broke the lloh level for the lst time. two of the biggest s&ls in the West made drastic cutbacks in home loans as predictions of a credit crunch (sharply curtailed availabilitv of $$) increased.

Wholesalers and retailers generalfy began immediote reduction of inventory to reduce their financing costs; firms closely tied to new home construction have been more severely affected than others with industrial/commercial and d-i-v customers.

U.S. home builders, figuring that once again they are taking the brunt o.f ./bd. onti-inflotion measures, set Nov. 7-8 for a summit conference in Washington. D.C.. to seek a solution to tight credit problems.

Housing starts in Sept. (latest available) were stronger again than many expected: up 4.2olt from Aug.; at 1,881,000 units 0n a seasonally adjusted annual basis the 2nd healthiest in '79.. single family starts were up slightly to 1,249,000; multis r0se ll.7o/o to a 632,000 rate. starts rose in the West and bldg. permits moved up 506, the highest level this year. .

While the figs. don't reflect latest fed. moves, demand is still strong and the thrifts have a record volume of commitments for future lending, a whopping $22 billion: thus some economists think the real impact of gov. credit tightening will be postponed until early '80.

A union-approved study in British Columbia, Canada, of the dangers of wood dust showed no signi/icant e//bct on n'orkers.. construction contracts in Sept. fell for the 3rd consecutive mo., to put them 60[ behind a year ago.

Wider market penetration by sized lumber is foreseen by the Western Wood Products Assn.: improved technology allows sized lumber to be sawn so accurately that little or no planing is needed to achieve a uniform size.

t\ F GREAT concern to us is Section V:tS oi H.R. 3875 legislation, The Housing and Community Development Amendments of 1979.

This section passed by the House of Representatives contains a provision exempting masonry construction from thermal energy performance standards promulgated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Senate-passed ver-

sion contains no such provision. As the legislation is before the House-Senate conference committee, we oppose Section 318.

Because wood and masonry are the two main building products for home construction in Arizona, they are very competitive. With this unreasonable exemption lor masonry block from the HUD thermal energy standards, the standards apply only to wood. Although we firmly support energy saving standards, we feel that such an issue does not belong in the political arena of Congress.

With these thoughts in mind, we

asked Joe Hobson, v.p. of the NLBMDA, to contact the Honorable John Rhodes of Arizona. minoritv leader of the House, to protest this exemption on our behalf.

The following letter is the reply lrom James R. Feltham, administrative assistant to Congressman Rhodes.

Thank you for your letter dated Sept. l8 with respect to the provision in Section 318 oi the HUD amendments of 1979, exempting masonry construction from thermal energy performance standards that were recently promulg-. ated by HUD. While Mr. Rhodes supports this exemption, he is not doing so to place masonry construction at an unfair competitive advantage over wood frame construction.

This exemption only came about because of HUD's intransigence with respect to the standards it issued. Had they been reasonable, and taken into account the effect that warm weather (Please turn to page 24)

DEGINNING in September, inves- El tigators from the U.S. Department of Labor are selecting approximately 18,000 firms across the country for spot checks of compliance with minimum wage, overtime pay, child labor and other Fair Labor Standards Act regulations. You may want to check your operation to make sure you are in full compliance just in case you are one of those unlucky 18,000.

TheTax Reform Act of 1976 contained a provision which changes the basis for calculating the capital gain on inherited property. This provision was so controversial that Congress post-

poned its effective date. However, unless it is repealed, it will go into effect December 31. If the "Carrvover basis" becomes la1il, an heir witt Ue required to use the value of the property at the time it was acquired by the deceased, rather than at the time of death, in computing capital gain. The "Carryover basis" provision does not change federal estate tax requirements or state inheritance taxes. The law is significantly more complicated than this description indicates, but even this brief description emphasizes the potential of requiring survivors to liquidate the property just to pay taxes.

However, HUD refused to adopt standards that took into account these varying climate conditions, or rules that truly reflected energy saving insulation benefits for homes constructed out of masonry and block in states like Arizona. Because of this, the action was taken by the House of Representatives.

I take issue with your characterization of the House bill as "inequitable, discriminatory, and contrary to the national need for increased energy conservation." Moreover, your letter fails to mention the significant market dominance of wood frame construction nationwide. Furthermore, you evidence a complete lack of understanding of the history of this controversy with respect to the HUD and Farm and Home Administration insulation standards.

I should emphasize that this is only a temporary measure that was taken by the House of Representatives because of HUD's position. If the agency had come up with thermal performance standards based on irrefutable technical data, we believe the merits of the (Please turn to pase 75)

Forest Center at Cal Expo

Following the lead of other western states, the California Forest Protective Assn. has developed a year-round Forest Center at the Cal Expo State Fair grounds in Sacramento, Ca.

Built for approximately $50,000 (contributed by the forest industry over the past seven years) the center was visited by more than 13,500 persons during Cal Expo this fall. Considered a showcase example of a private industry funded exhibit on the state fairgrounds, the facility will remain open to the public all year.

A one acre site with lagoon, running stream, pathways and bark-covered ground, the center features over30 forest species native to California soil. An octagonal, open-air pavilion houses an exhibit explaining the business of forest management and its public benefits.

CFPA plans a sustaining membership program, set to begin early next year, that will allow companies and individuals to subscribe for a nominal annual fee, to help in the countinued development of the center.

HardwoodFlooringSchool

Strong evidence of the renewed interest in hardwood floors was demonstrated by a full class of 5l students attending the second Hardwood Flooring Installation School in Memphis, Tn.

The school is sponsored jointly by the American Parquet Association and the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association.

With students from 25 states.

lllt0S 0t session of laying out and nailing a strip oak floor is lab work for students at

enrollment was almost double that of the first session held this year. Included were representatives of fl ooring manufacturers, distributors, dealers and installation firms. Job titles ranged from business owners through managers, sales personnel and floor installers.

Claude Taylor, director of sales for Memphis Hardwood Flooring Co., and school committee chairman, commented, "This big tur-

nout is extremely gratifying. It is quite evident that people in all facets of the industry are aware of the growing demand for hardwood floors and the need to know proper installation techniques. "

The school was organized to help overcome the shortage of experienced flooring installers which has become more pronounced with the renewed demand for wood floors.

He is a five year Navy veteran of World War Il and Korca. Sam worked at various sawnrill jobs until he becanre a PLIB lumber inspector.Due to his

UsuryLid Cuts Loans

As a result of the tight money policies adopted by the Federal Reserve Board, mortgage funds will be virtually unavailable in nearly half the states beginning in January with the worst coming in February and March.

States with usury ceilings (usury is exhorbitant interestpaid or charged) will be hard hit because they have laws limiting mortgage rates to l2oh or less. Five states in theWest are among those where it will become unprofitable for banks to lend mortgage money because they must pay higher interest rates than they can charge borrowers.

Thomas Parliament, an economist at the U.S. League of Savings Assns., identified Washington with a limit of 720h as one of the states which will be mortgage dry come 1980. He also predicted particularly steep interest rates for California which has no fixed ceilins.

Other western states with fixed usury limits are Arizona, 12oh; Hawaii, l2olrr; New Mexico, 100/ol Oregon, 120ft.

Down payments of 20oh are expected to become common with banks refusing mortgages when carrying costs exceed 2501, of the homeowner's income.

A SQUARE RIGGED KETCH la full of kids mav not be evervbody's idea of fun, but Steve Freeman, a Newport Beach, Ca., office wholesaler of western softwood, loves it.

Several tiines each month he sails the Argus, a Sea Scout vessel, out of Newport Harbor with a crew of young people handling the wheel, sails, and climbing the rigging. He is one of four designated skippers for the colorful old 90' tops'l ketch.

Built in Denmark in 1908. it

once served as a Danish coastal freighter, and has been registered to the Boy Scouts for the past eight years. Freeman was active in a community drive several years ago to raise funds to support the ship.

A Merchant Marine Master since World War II service, he has continued sailing in civilian life aboard freighters, tankers and a transoceanic towboat. His voyages include a stint aboard the Alaska Spruce, the last of the lumber schooners, and a trip across the Pacific on the Henry Fosstowing the

huge Pacific Hawaiian lumber barge KoKo Head from the Pacific Northwest to Hawaii.

He also is a writer of sea tales and stories about the Merchant Marine. in addition to operating Stephen G. Freeman & Co.

Record Lumber Load

Marquart-Wolfe Lumber Co., Orange, Ca., has received the largest single lumber load ever shipped by the Southern Pacific Railroad on a single flatcar.

Weighing in at 181,600 lbs., almost one ton over their previous record, the car was.loaded at the Mountain Fir Lumber Co. mill, Independence, Or. The load, containing more than 83,766 board feet of unseason Douglas fir extra length ridge beams and similar dimensional lumber, surpasses the previous record of 75,000 board feet of lumber on a single car. It more than doubles the average size lumber shipment of 85,000 lbs.

If the lumber in the shipment

were cut into other dimensions, the bulkhead flatcar would contain suflicient lumber to build approximately l9 moderate-sized dwellings of 1,500 sq. ft. each, according to Jim Martin, Mountain Fir's sales mgr.

Thomas E. Kelley, Southern Pacific's district sales mgr. at Salem, Or., explained the car moved to destination under the open-end rate concept pioneered by SP in the Northwest in 1975.

Based on a minimum load of 85,000 lbs., the forest product shipper gets a break on a progressively declining scale for every 100 lbs. he loads over that basic minimum. The rate concept is applicable to all basic forest products - dimension

lumber, studs, boards, plywood, particleboard and hardboard.

Kelley explained that loading more lumber per car cuts shipping costs through better equipment utilization, less switching and cr handling on a unit basis during transit. These cost savings benefit both the railroad, the shipper, the receiver and ultimately, tHl. consuming public, he said.

Martin estimated this particular shipment - 96,600 lbs. over the minimum - would save his firm $839 in freight costs.

The lumber was loaded onto a new 65-ft-long Cotton Belt bulkhead flatcar with an inside payload length of 60'6" and a width of l0'6".Cotton Belt is aSP subsidiarv.

Cardwell Turns Three

On Nov. l, Cardwell Forest Products put a third candle on its birrhday cake. The company, which was founded in 19'16 by Ralph Cardwell, has grown from a modest organization of three to eight employees today. Sales have increased in the three years to more than $19 million plus this year.

Cardwell says that he is grateful for the confidence the mills and loval customers have siven him which have made this gr<iwth possible.

The wholesale firm, which specializes in framing lumber, studs and plywood, is located in Fullerton, Ca.

Prior to establishing his company in November, 1976, Cardwell had been active in wholesaling in California since 1952. He is currently the president of the Lumber Association of Southern California. the trade association comprised of 250 retailers and wholesalers in the Southern California area.

ICBO OKs Code Changes

The International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) has given final approval to several forest industry-supported changes in the Uniform Building Code.

Among the changes are provisions for preservative treatment of glulam timbers exposed to the weather; a new standard sponsored by the American Hardboard Association for hardboard siding and its use as structural siding: use of 2x6 studs spaced 24 inches on center when supporting not more than a floor, ceiling and roof load; and a new appendix chapter establishing minimum requirements for large-area covered malls, allowing them to be of sprinklered wood construction.

Speed Up Collections

Collection of accounts receivable speed up if you follow these simple procedures.

Bill each shipment separately. Ganging shipments into one invoice may save paperwork, but it slows down collection and increases risk.

Issue periodic bills for work in process.

Process all invoices quickly with special emphasis on high-dollar accounts.

Special delivery invoices for very large sums to emphaiize the need for speedy payment.

Record cutoff dates for bis customers and send invoices in time to assure prompipayment.

All-Coast Ghanges Hands

Agreement in principle has been reached between Hampton Affiliates, Portland, Or., and Daryl Bond for the acquisition of the assets of Hampton's All-Coast Forest Products Co. at Chino, Ca.

The purchase price was not announced.

All-Coast Forest Products' operations comprise one of the most modern facilities in Southern California for lumber distribution and remanufacture. The 2O-acre complex is strategically located in the path of California's building development, according to the company.

All-Coast was formed four years ago as a division of Hampton Lumber Sales Co. of Portland, Or., with Bond as president. Gordon J. King, president of Hampton Lumber Sales, and Bond initiated a growth plan which will bring sales for the current year to $50 million from direct rail, truck and trailer shipments, distribution yard, remanufactured products and cargo.

The division began cargo shipments from Doman Industries, Ltd.. Duncan, B.C.. Canada, to Southern California and has represented Doman exclusivelv in the California market.

Hampton Lumber Sales intends to maintain its supplier relationship with the new company on an armslength transaction basis, a continuation of a four-year old policy, insuring Hampton Affiliates' annual production of 135,000,000

Thol's How lt Goes!

board feet access to the important Southern California market through all traditional competitive customers.

The primary motivation for the sale was "an offerwe couldn't refuse," according to John C. Hampton, chairman of Hampton Affiliates. "Daryl Bond has offered us an attractive price at a time when our company is committed to a major expansion program."

Hampton recently announced plans for a new $9 million facility at Willamina, Or., to add a small log mill and a veneer mill to existing operations.

"ln addition, we see other opportunities for growth in sales, distribution and remanufacture in the Pacific Northwest where the proceeds from the sale can be deployed," Hampton said.

HOLIDAY SELLING

nent spot with suggestions for all, from Aunt Lil to Fido.

Enlist the help of your employees. Put them in the spirit of the season with decorating contests for the sections. Set the theme, supply the materials, and let each section do their own end cap displays, gondola arrangements, vignettes. and decorations. You will find that they have fresh ideas to showcase their special wares.

Arrange chalktalk sessions to brief them on sales techniques, alert them to shop lifters and seasonal problems, emphasize special services and housekeeping. These meetings are especially important if you have temporary holiday help who must be informed on store policy and procedure.

Some stores have success in encouraging employees to get into the action by wearing Santa Claus hats, elves'aprons, or other type of costume to add to the festivity and identify them as clerks.

Sales, promotions, and advertising should be planned now. Most operations are swamped and slow at holiday time. Be prepared by completing arrangements for shopping circulars, newspaper ads, tv or radio spots as soon as possible. You'll get better service and be relieved ofthe responsibility when your store needs you.

Now is also the time to plan for the end of the year clean-up. The day after Christmas is not the time to organize this. Arrangements for handling returns, sale of left-over holidays goods, storage of decorations, and housecleaning should be detailed before Dec. 25. with responsibilities assigned.

Don't let the season catch you unprepared. Your customers, your employees, and your cash register will benefit from your pre-planning.

198O Construction

Construction contracts in 1980 will total $169.5 billion, 2oh more than this year's anticipated level of $165.5 billion. But after accounting for the impact of inflation, the actual volume of next year's construction will be down by 80ft, McGraw-Hill Information Systems has forecast to over 600 executives attending the annual Building Products Executives Conference in Washington, D.C.

George A. Christie, the company's v.p. and chief economist, said that "on the surface, you couldn't find much evidence of recession in the construction industry in the fall of 1979. But in the 1979 months that still remain. all the risk is on the downside."

The economist warned that as the Federal Reserve Board seeks "the ultimate rate of interest" to deter inflation, the housing market will stagnate. "As the fiscal 1979 budget gives way to the fiscal 1980 budget, public works spending will be a prime target for restraint," explained Christie. "As the recession deepens in the quarter ahead, commercial and industrial building will be curtailed. And that's the way things will remain," he said, "until there's a fundamental change in the economic environment."

He expects nonresidential buildine contracts to total $48.3 billion ne-xt vear. a 20i decline from this year's estimated $49.3 billion; residential construction will come to $75.9 billion , a 3oh increase over this year's $73.7 billion; and nonbuilding construction, expected to total $42.5 billion this year, will increase 706 to $45.4 billion.

Heat Loss Rating

Under the new Door Insulating Systems Index that combines energy loss through a door and from infiltration. a standard Benchmark entrance door system provides an efficiency rating of 1.5.

Based on test results by an independent laboratory, the 1.5 rating translates as a loss of 1.500 BTU's per day.

In developing the new total insulation rating, the Insulated Steel Door Systems Institute set a maximum rating of 8.6 allowable for door systems.

Tests were made on a standard 3' x 6'8" insulated steel door pre-hung in weather-sealed frame with frostbreak threshold. The ratings have also been calculated for Benchmark's double doors and Vista patio door systems.

The rating was developed to give the trade a single index number that is easy to understand and use for comparison of insulating values. Since the one number is easily converted into a BTU loss per day, this loss can be related to the BTU output of the heating system.

The 316 WlZ, Act ll

"The Wizard of Ruf-Sawn 316" continues the Showtime '79 program launched earlier this year by Simpson Timber Co. It features the Ruf-Sawn 316 overlaid plywood, the first incentive program centered around this product since it was introduced five years ago.

The new campaign is designed to capitalize on the recently concluded successful redwood plywood siding sales event. The program kicked off September 15, and will end December 15, with redemption of points earned until February 28, 1980.

The Showtime theme is carried throughout all elements of this promotion. Listed as a Paint/Holdin Production-an accurate description of

the product capabilities-the star of the show is Dorability, assisted by The Woodman. who has a Ruf exterior but who is pure ply; Wearcrow, whose weatherability is outstanding in his field; the Colorful Lion, prefinished or unfinished, color him versatile; and the Crunchkins, tiny but tough, they keep Ruf-Sawn 316 from checking and peeling. Theme song of this Act II production is "Over the Ruf-Sawn."

Designed to motivate stockins orders oT Ruf-Sawn 316, the incentivE program has been planned so customers, regardless of size or type of operation, can participate and make use of the advertising and promotional elements which will be available for this major selling event.

The incentive program will allow

bonus points, based on orders for Ruf-Sawn 316 or Stucco 316 panels. Points are awarded on monthlv orders with 100 points for each 7st' panel and 20O points for each s/a" panel. The prizes earned are redeemed from more than 900 gifts itemized in the Showtime catalog. There is no limit to the number of points/awards that can be accumulated. One difference is being added to this program: the dealer/distributor can cash in his earnings for product if he so desires, based on the same points per panel award structure.

Some additional grand prizes have been included in "The Wizard of Ruf-Sawn 316" campaign: A Mercedes Benz, a Ford pickup, a Uniflite boat. and a 24 carat diamond.

mate will parallel actual requirements and after a few months you should achieve an accuracy range of 20ft to 501,.

How do you solve your cash flow problems? First, a management approach must be developed and employees must be aware of your policy. Second, an operating strategy must be developed to deal with each identified cash flow problem. An approach and strategy to solve some of the most common problems followj:

MANAGEMENT APPROACH

Determine objective - (7 to 8x)

Analyze slow moving products on quarterly basis

Analyze turnover reduction and carrylng cost

Determine products consistently damaged, establish clean warehouse policy. Use rotating stock plan.

If turnover objective cannot be met - eliminate or reduce to meet objective.

OPERATlNG STRATEGY

Measure performance of major selling products by using turnover and gross margln.

Use local wholesaler as inventorv stocking source: promote out quarterly overstocked products: Mdse. "front end" plan.

Ifdirect purchases turnover is less than 6 (X) annual (holding period over 2 months) - Buy from local wholesaler as required.

Train employees on handling: Watch level ofinventory: Rotate stocks by using: alternate bins: Sell as identified. do not stock pile.

Determine who buys and why and necessity ofcarrying.

CASH FLOW PROBLEM

o Fear ofproduct pruning

. Lack of merchandising

MANAGEMENT APPROACH

Policy established on slow-moving or problem-oriented products.

Merchandise new products, high gross profit items and stage location to feature what you want to sell

OPERATING STRATEGY

Review product pruning candidates at least annually and dispose of low R.O.l. products.

Keep displays clean & fresh, change frequently, watch T/O "Front End" items, feature your winners - and losers (until out ofstock).

Failure to properly use wholesaler

. Don't know product gross profit rate

o Don't know product turnover

. Don't know product R.O.l.

o The "bargain" buy

Use wholesaler inventory as your own - keep stock to overlap delivery schedule of wholesaler bv 2-3 (X).

Determine rate for all products and use replacement cost markup on cost rncreases.

Establish turnover sheet by product and evaluate quarterly.

Determine gross profit on average inventory investment using annual data as initial information.

Determine why it is a bargain and length of time it will probably be in inventory.

Accounts Receivable

o Collection period increasing

a New customers

Determine objective based on tgrms - (35 days goal).

Establish criteria for approving credit and credit limit.

Have wholesaler work with you to achieve T/O objective.

Make monthly cycle checks on selected products to verify performance.

Merchandise and promote slow movers - reduce purchasesmonitor sales.

Reduce purchase of low R.O.I. items or eliminate if required.

Promote and sell. Review customers consistently paying beyond objective - call and frankly discuss the problem and advise customer of policy.

Make certain credit is evaluated and obtain references extending beyond one year. Keep within credit Iimit.

CASH FLOW PROBLEM

. Payment trends

Push for sales

o What customer buys

o Special terms

. Customer profitability

MANAGEMENT APPROACH

Review payment trends of selected accounts and analyze reasons for changes.

Set reasonable sales goals based on existing customer base and new customer potential. Review profitability by customer based upon products sold.

Caution! Grant special terms if margin is high enough to cover carrying cost or if vendor terms offset. Keep abreast of changing customer financial position. Visit customers periodically and observe activity.

OPERATING STRATEGY

If external factors (i.e. weather) causing slowness, monitor carefully: If other factors seem present - contact accounts for explanation.

Keep customers within prudently established credit limits - Do not oversell customers ability to pay. ll customer buys low margin items and pays beyond terms, influence customer to buy other products carrying higher margin. Calculate affect on profit on each situation considered.

Be prepared to adjust credit limit and respond to unusually large orders based on knowledge of customer operation.

o Lagging collection effort

o Fear of shutting off

Gross Margin

o Margin declining

o What is mark-up required

. Product sales mix

a Expense control

o Accounts payable

Examine methods in use, change style and type of effort. Don't hesitate to use personal type letters.

Establish credit cut-off policy and enforce!

Set margin objective based upon R.O.l. goals.

Establish R.O.l. goal and determine mark-up required for achievement.

Achieve proper mix to get R.O.l objective by sales emphasis, advertising and merchandising.

Justify on payback basis all controllable expense additions.

Pay vendors within discount period if discount rate justifies. Il not, pay on net terms.

So you think you are running your business! You should be! But, your suppliers, customers, employees, accountant and banker are all part of the variable relationships that must be dealt with and you determine the outcome. Whether the business problem is one of cash flow or low return on investment, you can usually trace the source to lack of balance sheet management.

In summary, let me leave you with this basic overvlew:

Cash flow and return on investment are a function of to whom you sell what you sell

If you watch to whom you . . .get sufficient price

gross margin

sell, you will to make a satisfactorv

Change approach occasionally to avoid the "familiarity syndrome." Inform owner when his effort is required.

Treat customers the same under cut-off policy. Provide for continued cash purchases with override to clear old balance.

Monitor all major product sales monthly. Make sure prices are being increased to olfset cost increases and maintain margin.

Analyze mark-up on products and determine if grouping (i.e.. hardware) is on target.

Monitor sales and if mix changes, act immediately to stabilize so low margin products won't become primary sales. Look for cost reduction, efficiency improvement. Do not add cost unless other options aren't available. Watch vendor terms. Negotiate special terms if possible. In inventory increase periods, time deliveries to maximize cash and extend payment time.

collect your accounts receivable achieve your sales and profit goals

If you watch what you sell, you will provide proper service and substantially control out-of-stock problems

. . keep your investment in inventory low and at a practical level increase your inventory turnover.

Those two rather simple statements, watching to whom you sell and watching what you sell, can make the profitable difference in your business.

So, you think you are running your business! You will be if practical controls are in use and sufficient information is available to plan for future periods and monitor performance against planned objectives.

The Past Presidents' luncheon set a record for the greatest number of former chiefs in attendance (fifteen); the period represented covered 1937 to the present. Entertainer Louis Nye was the luncheon speaker.

Other speakers included Robert Herbst of the Western Wood Products Association who presented that association's audio-visual show on the plen-wood system called, "The 200/o Difference." He urged the more than 500 dealers present from all parts of the country to sell it to their contractor dealers. PlenWood is the system that promotes the use of wood joists in residential foundations, utilizing the crawlspace as the conditioned-air distribution chamber, instead of metal ductwork.

Strong repair/remodel market

Structural additions will make up some 40Vo of the $38 billion U. S. "remodeling and repair" rharket next year, according to Morris Robinson, director of the Bureau of Marketing Research, Chicago.

Repair and remodeling is picking up steam as new house costs climb, enticing homeowners to stay with what they have but to reshape it to fit their changing needs. Every five add-on rooms are often considered equal to one new housing start in terms of lumber and similar building material requirements.

Advertising Pays Otf

Holding the line on advertising is important during a recesslon.

Studies show that when a company cuts or stops its advertising program, the competitors' advertising becomes more prominent and gains a bigger share of the market.

The companies holding the line on advertising expenditures in a recession achieve higher sales and new income in those lean years and the years following.

Redwood Paneling Sales Tips

Although redwood takes and holds finishes better than other woods, redwood lumber paneling requires no finishes on surfaces away from grease, moisture and dirt. Left unfinished, redwood paneling will gradually darken in color. A clear sealer can help protect the wood in high traffic areas.

Store Philosophy Pays Off

The family philosophy which Dave Thoesen and Dick Hallett apply to their building supply business, Build 'n Grow in Irvine, Ca., is paying off.

Prospects for a No. 2 store have become a reality with construction on an almost 26,000 sq. ft. establishment in Heritage Square, also in Irvine, underway. Target date for completion is in l0 to l4 months.

At that time, the two owners will move a nucleus of the staff at the present store over to open the new Build 'n Grow. Some 450/o of their employees have been with them since they opened six years ago, according to Dave. When he talks about them, it is easy to see why. 'Professional is one term he applies. He considers the employees the finest and well deserving of the exceptional treatment they receive. Profit sharing is part of the store philosophy. Good fringe benefits and an atmosphere of interest, warmth and trust help to build

employee loyalty.

The togetherness feeling continues after working hours with the employees and owners playing basketball, taking trips to baseball games, and special events. EmPloYees who play together, stay together becomes a reality for the company, he feels.

Customers are part of the sPecial feeling, too. They seem to sense that they are valued and imPortant and reciprocate by being interested in the store and its peoPle. An example of customer involvement is the excitement of the customers, as reported by Owner Thoesen, over a recent newspaper article featuring Build 'n Grow.

Build 'n Grow is the result of two friends wanting their own businesses. Since both had backgrounds in hardware and building suPPlies, the final choice of involvement was a natural. Dave worked for Bourget Brothers in Santa Monica for eight years and Dick was employed by Sears and Ole's.

Tentative plans include a third store which will be in the neighborhood.

Beetles bugging your hardwood?

IA' ITH TH.E INCREASING

UU importation of hardwood from tropical countries, losses in recently seasoned lumber and semi-manufactured products from damage done by the powder post beetles in the family Lyctidae is in the millions of dollars annually.

Although the problem can exist with the domestic species as well as imports, tropical climates such as Africa, Asia and South America are ideal breeding grounds for the pests. Detection of the beetles which attack the wood while it is stored unprotected in the open prior to processing and shipping is extremely difficult because there is no outward sign of infestation for at least a year or more.

Infestation occurs when the female beetle inserts her eggs into pores below the wood surface. These become larva within one to three weeks and the damage begins as the tiny larvae eat through the wood creating a series of wandering tunnels of gradually increasing diameter as they grow. In several months or sometimes as long as a year, the mature larva makes the transformation to the pupal stage near the wood surface. Within two to three weeks, it becomes an adult beetle and chews a small circular hole to emerge from the wood.

The length of the developmental process is dependent upon the starch content of the wood, moisture and temperature. Hardwoods are prime targets because

the sapwood has high starch content. Since little or no growth occurs in wood with less than 3olo starch, softwoods are immune. Starch content drops as wood ages, thus making new wood in storage, manufacture or transportation most susceptible.

Since the eggs enter the wood through pores, ring porous hardwood such as ash, oak and walnut with Iarge-diameter pores are readily infested. Large pore tropical hardwood such as banak, obeche and lauan/meranti also are vulnerable. Diffuse-porous hardwood such as basswood and maple are generally immune.

Cargo containerization complicates the problem because it restricts quarantine inspection at ports of entry. The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) considers the lyctid beetle to be either established or impossi- ble to quarantine and allows infested wood to enter the United States without treatment.

Infestation is rarely discovered until the adult beetles emerge leaving small circular-flight holes on the surface. Other possible indications are piles of borer dust (frass) from larval activity. Sighting of adult beetles at lights and on the wood also is indicative. When infested wood is sawed, frass-filled larval tunnels are exposed.

Incoming shipments of hardwood lumber, plywood, and unfinished products should be inspected for beetle activity. Shipments with known or suspected infestation should be rejected or treated. Hardwood kiln-dried according to kiln-dried schedules should be requested when new stock is ordered. Precautions taken during storage should include semiannual inspections for wood in open storage and more often for wood in heated buildings.

Additionally, first in/first out stock rotation and the use of softwood piling sticks and pallets will reduce danger of attack. High standards of cleanliness are essential since piles of hardwood scrap can

become breeding grounds.

Control of active lyctid beetles is possible with kiln sterilization or fumigation. Heat sterilization is effective for wood not yet manufactured while fumigation is preferred for wood products. Since neither

lyctid beetle

offer protection against reinfectation, it is sometimes necessary later to treat the surface with aPplications of liquid insecticides.

Withtwo other beetle groups responsible for damage in recently seasoned hardwoods, it is necessary to identify thelyctid beetle. Ambrosia beetles (Scolytidae and Platypodidae) attack dying trees, drying logs, and green lumber. Their larval tunnels are made before wood is milled and are cut at variable angles during processing. Since lyctid flight holes are made after milling, they are always perpendicular to the surface.

The false powder post beetle in the family Bostrichidae attacks bamboo and lays eggs in wood with attached bark, although some tropical bostrichids bore into bare wood. Their holes and tunnels are larger than the lyctid's and their frass is coarser and more tightly packed into tunnels.

STEAM SCHOONERS

The Merchant Magazine July issue containing Gage McKinney's dandy story on the old steam schooners (see p.l4) was received with much pleasure.

I have read a lot of material on steam schooners, and even written a few items myself. It is a rare thing to pick up something new in the way of information, as a rule, so I was pleased to find your article providing the exception.

This is the first time I have encountered any reference to Captain John W. Gage and I gather that you are a descendant. I have encountered only scant reference to the Beda and had assumed that she was built as a steamer in 1882. That is the date given in Ships qf the Redwood Coast and might be the date of conversion.

"The First Steam Schooner" is something I won't argue about but I know it wasn't the Newsboy in 1888 because by then all kinds of them had been built. I do know that both Celra

and Surprise were launched as steam propellers in 1884 on the basis of photographic evidence and feel pretty certain the Laguna was likewise in I 882.

The Newporl, built in 1875, was a freighter with a shelter deck that could provide protection for general merchandise and carried very little exposed to the weather. When I was a small boy I remember the Newport rotting away on the Alameda. Ca.. mudflats near Barnes and Tibbett's shipyard. She may have been sold to some trusting souls during the early stages of World War I.

In l9l7 I saw a little shelter decked freighter being refitted at Hanlon's shipyard in Oakland. Her name was Hattie Gage and I wonder if you know anything about her, in view of the name.

Built in 1889, she was a cute little thing about 85' over all and only 80.82 gross tons. Hattie had, been sold to some South or Central American parties and the last I saw ofher was offthe coast of Central America in rather sloppy weather, plugging along with a couple of steadying sails to check some of the rolling.

Only in recent times I learned that she was employed in the San Francisco to Eel River run back in the days when there was some hope of competing with Humboldt Bay for the shipment of farm produce out of the fertile Eel River valley. A chancy business.

WEST COAST CARGO

We enjoyed the recent article on the Pacific Coast lumber trading schooners Gee The Merchant Magazine, July, p. 14) and found it of extreme interest.

Relative to this subject you may find a similar interest in the introduction into this trade of our new specially designed vessel M. V. Douglas Fir.

Lifting 4.3 million board feet (net) of packaged lumber on her southbound trip and 45,000 barrels of

California Bunker'C' oil for the coastal pulp mills of British Columbia, this vessel is providing efficient service for lumber exporters from British Columbia into the Southern California market. She makes one round trip every l8-21 days. The usual port ofdischarge is Long Beach and Los Angeles while the oil cargo is loaded usually at San Pedro. The vessel has, however, made one trip into Port Hueneme,Ca., for Chandler Lumber.

This latest development in a historical trade is interesting in that possibly for the first time a unique vessel has been designed and built for this trade.
