Insulation Tester

To measure flammability of attic insulation materials, U.S. Testing Company, Inc. has a Radiant Panel Apparatus. It meets requirements of Federal specifications for cellulosic and wood fiber loose-fill insulation and for mineral fiber loose-fill and blanket insulation.

The heat energy imposed on the test sample simulates solar radiation levels that impinge on the upper surfaces of installed attic insulation. The apparatus permits rank ordering of materials in terms of critical radiant flux at flameout.

Mapes Industries' AddOn insulated window panel system substantially cuts heat loss in older school and institutional bui-ldings, the firm claims. Addition of insulated panels to cover the top sash of a typical, older wood frame window blocks escaping heat and presents a pleasing building appearance that is also resistant to vandalism, the firm reports. Panels come in a wide range of colors to match or contrast any building facade.

Gas Sentry, a new LP and natural gas detector designed for residential use, has received UL approval.

It is said to detect LP gas and natural gas far below levels that would cause explosion, asphyxiation or flash fire. The unit also detects a number of other dangerous fumes and gases, such as gasoline, paint and flammable cleaning materials.

It uses a semiconductor sensor which changes electrical resistance in the presence of low levels of noxious gases. The change in resistance is detected by an electric circuit, which then sounds the alarm. Retails for under $35.

Glued To lt

American Olean has AO 1700. a synthetic latex adhesive that is nonflammable and non-combustible.

It is for use in areas requiring prolonged water resistance, and is water cleanable while it is still wet. No flammable cleaning solvents are required. It spreads easily, has good initial tack and (reportedly) superior bond strength, and stain resistance.

Replacement Baths

Corl Corp. has Corglas 28, new fiberglass bath and shower replacement units that are 28" wide and have a tough, one-piece design narrow enough to fit through most inside doors.

Includes 60" tubs, and 48" or 36" showers. Available in colors to match those of the major fixture manufacturers.

Non-Shrink Grout

A new non-metallic, non-shrink grout, Sealtiglrt 588, is new from W.R. Meadows, Inc. It is a high flow grout designed for ease of use and simplified field application.

Placed by pouring, rodding, pumping or vibrating, it offers a wide range of application consistencies and excellent workability.

Non-corrosive and non-gaseous, it reportedly offers high density, high flexural, and high compressive strengths. No protective cover is required. It is designed for either wet or dry conditions, or hot or cold conditions, and is ideal for both interior and exterior use.

Polystyrene Boards

Holland Industries, is launching a diy program for three of its Thermco products: Panel-Pak, Ceiling-Pak, and Multi-Pak.

The polystyrene boards prevent heat loss or gain by trapping dead air space with interlocking expanded polystyrene beads, according to the firm.

New Joist Design

An innovative new joist design has been introduced to the residential building market by Trus Joist. Residential TJI features better load carrying performance and lighter weight, according to the Boise, Id., firm.

That combination enables Residential TJI to deliver 16" on-center performance wlth 24" o.c. spacing. This can mean up to a 3O% savings in material.

It uses the firm's exclusive Micro= Lam for the top and bottom | 314" flanges. The web is 3/8" plywood. TJI is available in lengths to 56' for continuous, multiple spans.

While a typical 26' joist weighs less than 50 lbs. and can be easily handled by one carpenter, it is 3O% stiffer than I I select dense structural Douglas fir solid sawn 2 x 10.

TJI frames faster than conventional lumber, the company avers. No special tools are required and it saws and nails like solid sawn.

Jiffy Offices

Get This Brick

Marlite brand exterior brick panels can be applied as quickly and efficiently as siding, and eighteen "bricks" can be installed at one time, according to the firm.

A patented watershed interlock reportedly seals weather out on all four sides and covers the nail heads as well. Panels are pre-mortared to further reduce installation time, and are made from crushed stone reinforced with fiberglass. They weigh 4 lbs, and saw smoothly with an ordinary hack saw or power saw.

Round Celling Diffuser

Lima Register Co.'s Round Ceiling Diffuser and Round Damper are factory attached to a filler panel, for T-Bar layin installations. Round duct or flexible duct can be attached directly to the damper, eliminating the necessity of square to round transition.

A major benefit is that the installer does not have to cut or fit the diffuser into the ceiling tile himself. Instead, he can order a diffuser and damper already centered and mounted in a filler panel that has been cut to fit the T-Bar spacings. Then, he replaces the entire block with the factory assembled filler panel, diffuser and damper.

Drying Rack

American Stove Co. has Firelron, a new concept for making an existing fireplace into an efficient fireplace heating system.

It is 95 lbs. of rugged, heavy duty cast iron and will replace an existing fireplace basket or log holder. There are six dual-pass heating tubes of l/4" iron wall thickness that retain heat long after the fire subsides.

An airflow system pulls air from the room into the manifold and through the upper six directional ai nozzles at floor level, for the ultimate in comfort.

The Firelron will reportedly increase fireplace heating efficiency up to 6O%, burns wood or fireside coal, is easily installed and carries a five year warranty.

Tough Doors

E.A. Nord Company's laminated wood door panel has reportedly been exposed to extended weathering with excellent results. It is said to eliminate the problem of split panels that can occur in extreme climates.

Advance Color Corp. has Instant Vinyl, a new transparent adhesive which quickly mends tears and split seams, and patches holes in vinyl, leather and fabric, according to the firm.

It is applied directly from the tube, dries quickly, requires no heat and reportedly holds permanently. It is flexible, though and waterproof, and can be machine washed and dried automatically.

Each tube is blister-packed on a three-color 3-3/a" x 7" card with a hole for hanging on pegboard displays. Step-by-step instructions for use are printed on the back of the card. A free display rack is included.

New Cedar Panel

The bold character of cedar paneling has a new look with the introduction of Mark X Westbrook Cedar interior paneling from Oregon's Roseburg Lumber Co.

Random face veneers have been toned and protected with an alkyd urea finish to accent the inherent beauty of the wood. New, artisan "V" grooving and cross-scoring give a handsome, wood-plank effect.

The rugged 7116" thick, five-ply construction of Westbrook Cedar allows it to be applied directly to studs with no prior preparation of the wall required.

Double-wall Log Building

A double-wall system of building homes with Pan Abode pre-cut logs has an insulation R value of 9.6, and can be increased to R 25.6 with only 2" of rigid foam insulation between the walls.

The double-wall system of solid Western red cedar 3" x 6" logs, separated by a 4" ai cavity, takes advantage of the natural insulation properties of cedar combined with the insulating air space in the walls. By adding insu- lation in the cavity, total R value will exceed the most stringent energy conservation requirement.

Because of the thermal mass of the wood logs, a home built with the double-wall system reduces temperature variations in winter as heat cycles on and off or as doors are opened and closed, and eliminates cold downdrafts off the walls. In summer, the massive timbers reverse the procedure.

From an aesthetic viewpoint, the interior walls are single and can often be stopped at the inside edge of the outside walls, reducing the number of breaks in the wall.

Forced Air Wood Stove

A new forced air wood stove. utilizing an efficient secondary combustion chamber, is new from Baker Hydra-Fork Co.

It has a rear fan and heated air discharge to provide evenly radiated heat flow. Capable of heating an entire home by connecting the discharge to the house's forced air ducts, it reportedly will help reduce substantially the average home heating bill and could eliminate the use of home furnace in some instances.

Defender 3100, from Hampton Paint Mftg. Co., deals with problems of cracking, peeling and mildew that even the best conventional paint systems can't solve and, also, as a cinder block coating for institutions. etc.

This durable, soil resistant, estheticaly pleasing coating will bridge gaps, cracks and hollows in a single application and is an invaluable aid when covering cinder block, old wood, or previously painted surfaces, according to the company. It is for use on cinder block, masonry, shingle, composition or wood siding and even directly to galvanized metal. It reportedly bonds with the surface to form a protective film over 4 times the thickness of conventional paint.

Greening of the Patio

The diy'er can now enjoy a transluxent patio roof or backyard fence in a delightful new stripe pattern called Spring Green, reports Vistron Corp.

It can best be described as a pairing of fresh outdoor greens with bands of cloud-like white. It is the newest (and fifth) pattern of Filon-Stripes, the line of multi-colored earth tone translucent fiberglass reinforced plastic panels.
