Hands Off, Uncle Sam
I f VOU think recent graduates of our I nation's school system have some pretty fuzzy ideas about economics and the government's role in business and the marketplace, you're not alone. And the fault doesn't necessarily lie with the students, but rather the teachers, according to a man who should know.
T. Marshall Hahn, president of the GeorgiaPacific Corp., and president emeritus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, recently told a major educators meeting in Portland that "students need to develop a healthy skepticism about the decision making ability of government, particularly economic decisions. This is not to undermine confidence in government but to develop more realistic expectations of results it can achieve."
It's refreshing to hear a top business leader say what needs saying. Only we wouldn't restrict it to students. All segments of the population need a better understanding of the
marvel that is American free enterprise and why it functions best unfettered.
Hahn cited a typical example of federal problem solving: in attempting to cope with the energy shortage (if, in fact, there is one) the government has blossomed forth with a cabinet level extravaganza with 20,000 federal employees and a $10 billion budget, exceeding what is being spent in drilling and exploration for new oil supplies.
He points out, correctly, that neither business nor government have perfect records, and a good economic education should include that fact, plus that the free marketplace has to date proven the best economic system yet devised for workers and consumers.
With yet another round of wage and price controls (albeit voluntary), it's time again to tell all our people, not just the students, that unwarranted government intervention in the economy is what causes the problems, not solves them.

Earl Butz keynoted the convention with a well received talk on the importance of profits as an incentive to maintain America's high standard of living.
Sprinkling one-liners and a number of well rehearsed jokes in with his more serious thoughts, Butz warned of the dangers of increasing government interference in our lives. "The government is your senior partner," he noted, when observing that 380/o of the Gross National Product goes to support government at all levels.
The first afternoon of the convention was devoted to a Product Show, in the ballroom of the Marriott. that featured several hundred

Dealer business is on the beam
THE County Lumber Co. in I Santa Barbara, Ca., says it is winning the repeat business of general contractors by helping them plan their construction projects around glue laminated beams available from inventoried supplies.
Officials of the seven-year-old firm attribute such cost and time saving suggestions to gaining a greater share of the general contractors' market in the three counties they serve.
"When a contractor calls to order a beam, we try to direct him to a size in stock," said John Locke, County Lumber dispatcher. "It's a matter of getting him in the habit of calling ahead of time."
The firm further assists builders by having available a large selection of laminated timber in stock. The firm orders exclusively from Standard Structures Inc., Santa Rosa, Ca., makers of Standard Lam and Quick Lam.
"Standard Structures keep their word on delivery dates, and that's what counts in our business," said Greg Gartrell, president of County Lumber.
Employees of the lumber yard are quick to point out that use of laminated timber, rather than a large solid sawn beam, results in material savings, according to Locke. In addition, the walls supporting the beams don't have to bear as much weight as they

would if conventional beams were used in the same situation.
Glue laminated beams are engineered, stress-rated timbers comprised of wood sections securely bonded together with adhesives. Laminations may be made of pieces end-joined to form any length, pieces placed edge to edge make wider ones, or pieces bent to a specified curve during gluing.
The County Lumber Co. operates a bulk lumber yard in Goleta, outside Santa Barbara, and a retail lumber yard in Santa Barbara. A third location designed for the do-it-yourself market is scheduled to open in Santa Barbara this month.
Gartrell and the other three owners are an integral part of the firm's daily operations, keeping their fingers on the pulse of the building community they serve. Other owners are Al Topping, v.p., Ron Barker, secretary, and Dick Owen. treasurer.

Pacific Northwest sales circus
Ll OW TO set records year after year, to keep the I I enthusiasm up, to bring out aQ many customers as possible, is a constant challenge for the Palmer G. Lewis Co. annual buying show committee.
"It takes good planning, an interesting and exciting theme . .but most of all it's the drive and enthusiasm from our salesmen that makes it bigger and better each year," says Dick Lundgren, PGL executive v.p. and chief operations officer, and the buying show director.
According to Dick and his assistant Charles Lauber, PGL's v.p. for public relations, the 1978 Show was the greatest ever. When you look at some of the statistics you can see why:
o Sales approached 1.2 million dollars for the one day show.
. More than 1,200 people from five western states were in attendance: customers and spouses, suppliers, guests and PGL'ers.
o Supplier participation and cooperation was never better. Individual orders were larger.
Something which added a unique flavor to the September l7,Sunday show held in Auburn, Wa. at PGL headquarters, was the unexpected opportunity to hold the event in a brand new "tent." the recentlv com-
pleted 52,000 sq. ft. addition to the Auburn warehouse. There was twice as much room as before.
The circus theme was prevalent throughout for the sixth annual show. Mailings to customers, signs and decorations, the half dozen clowns of various sizes and shapes, and hot fresh popcorn all smacked of the "big tgnt. "
The grand prize drawing winner was Valley BestWay of Spokane, Washington. This company received a $1,000 savings bond and 20 shares of PGL stock.
Over 150 supplier reps were on hand attending their booths, many coming from the midwest and Canada in addition to local sales specialists.

From the ground uF, new distribution facility reflects careful planning
lf lstronS to the new All-Coast t Forest Products facility in Chino, Ca., are quickly struck with how far the industry has come in a relatively few years to today's stateof-the-art lumber distribution plant.
If you still tend to think in terms of dusty yards, pot holes and four man office shacks, you just haven't been paying attention. All-Coast's new plant cost nearly $3 million, sits on 20 acres and is literally designed from the ground up to perform its function.
Of its 20 acre site, 14 acres are paved, graded and planned to handle the heavy rains that periodically plague Southern California. More than $500,000 has been spent for soil preparation, grading and paving alone.
A low, 6,000 sq. ft. office building sits along the front side of the property, capped by a shingled,
Mansard roof and sporting diagonally placed cedar boards to accent the slumpstone columns placed periodically around the building.
Typical of the planning that went into the layout, the office building has all its plumbing and rest rooms at one end, so that a "flipped" or reverse version of the same building plan can be added later to tie into already existing plumbing at that end of the present structure. A 20,000 sq. ft. dry shed in the yard is similarly designed to accomodate an identical shed being added next to it.
A central area within the office building has the capacity to handle up to 10 l.c.l. salespersons and the office staffers to back up their efforts. Presently, there are l0 in the office force.
There are five, partially-open executive sales offices along one
side of the building. They are occupied by the All-Coast Forest Products management staff, which consists of president Daryl Bond; Joe Tidwell, vice president; Jack Berutich, sales manager; Mike Tidwell, redwood division manager; and R.E. "Bud" Byard, a recent addition to All-Coast, who will be providing his considerable expertise to the firm's redwood sales and purchasing.
Other officers include comptroller Leon Lauderbach, who handles finance, office, credit and related activities. Bill Sharp is the operations manager and Don Merrick heads up a crew ofeight as yard superintendent. Inventory control and timber sales are handled by Warren Haskins and Richard Del Real.
All-Coast switched over to a larger capacity computer recently as their old IBM Systems 32 could only handle sales up to $40 million.
The new hardware, IBM Systems 34, will handle sales up to $100 million per year, a figure Daryl Bond expects the company to hit by 1979 or 1980.
The company maintains a large inventory of Canadian lumber and has a 1979 Canadian cargo goal of approximately l3 million feet per month or nearly $160 million on an annual basis. The cargo inventory breakdown runs approximately 500/0 green Douglas fir, 400/o green hem-

The primary sales thrust of the facility is in timber sales, saw sized, rough and surfaced, from 3x6 to 18x20, up to 40 feet long. The bal-
ance of sales is projected to be in redwood and cedar fencing; "California Red,t' a redwood substitute made of mixed species that is pressure treated and colored; fascia items, and green Douglas fir yard items. The company also manufactures its own pine and spruce starterboard and decking.

A NB of the oldest retail lumber v companies in the West'has been taking note this year of an important milestone, their 100th year in business.
The Modesto Lumber Co., in the Central California town of the same name. is also remarkable for the fact that ownership is still in the same family as it was in the firm's earliest days.
Also very much intact is their century-old business philosophy.
According to one of the firm's top men, Clarkson Bradford, Jr., "We are strictly a service oriented operation, where personal attention and

The company employs around 50 people, does a mix of d-i-y, commercial, agricultural and contractor business. They are the only retail operation in their area that still has a planing mill. Operating primarily within Stanislaus Country, the firm also has yards in the small towns of Salida, Ceres and Turlock.

New redwood promotion
wood plywood dealers and builders, is currently being introduced in the California market area. The program, which captures the lure and excitement of the gold rush era, is a departure from the more traditional promotions utilized through the years by Simpson Timber.
The sales promotion is threefold: it is designed to affirm the current and the future availability of 5/8" custom redwood plywood; to communicate the advantages of the product to builders and architectsi to re-state Simpson's commitment to quality.
The program, effective through December 15. enables distributors to earn prizes valued up to $3500. Incentive points of 200 per 5/8" panel will be the basis for purchase of prizes.
Backing up the three month red-
wood plywood rush, Simpson Provides slide presentations, direct mail pieces, and other sales materials to customers to assist in each firm's own Promotional efforts.
A Simpson Timber mill was the first to successfully manufacture redwood olvwood.
1977 Lumber Production Up
The l2 western states in Western Wood Products Association's territory produced over 21.5 billion board feet of lumber during 1977. Overall this was a 4.30/o increase from 1976. Oregon led all states in production, producing 7,509,000,000 board feet of lumber. Oregon was followed by California, Washington, Idaho, Montana and the rest ofthe l2 states. The largest increase in production (by board feet) came in Washington with 370,000,000 more board feet of lumber produced in 1977 than in 1976, according to WWPA's 1977 Statistical Yearbook, just published.

USTRALIAN Hospitality is spelled lA
with a capital H.
During a 2l day tour of the South Pacific and the Down Under countries, 60 LMA members found the warmth and friendship of the New Zealand and Australian timber dealers was overwhelming. Very few US dealers realize the close alliance dealers in Australia feel toward the United States. They maintain close observation of the American scene, whether it be building materials or politics.
Proposition 13 is a common phrase in Australia and we were continually requested to explain it in detail.
The primary purpose of our visit was to attend the lOth All Australia Timber Congre Congress. Max Hayman, a frequent visitor to the US, chaired the Timber Congress and is to be commended for a highly professional and informative session. Among the various dignitaries making presentations at the Congress was Terry Mullin, Terry Building Centers, Tarzana, Ca., who presented a paper on retailing in the US.
Our group began the memorable trip on Sept. 13, with the first stop being Nadi, Fiji for a tour of local residential construction. From there on to Auckland. New Zealand, for the warm hospitality of the New Zealand dealers and a look at the retailing and manufacturing techniques.
The next stop was Melbourne and a most memorable visit with the Melbourne timber merchants. Of particular interest in Melbourne were the visits to Bowen's Home Center and Parsons Home Center. Both facilities are located in former warehouses which have been modernized and converted into spacious home center operations. Parsons is unusual in that it is a drive-through operation; the customer prepares his own ticket for merchandise he loads into or onto his car. A cashier reviews the ticket and collects for the goods while outside the store gates preclude customers from leaving without a vehicle inspection. Security is apparently adequate. Owner Geoff Parsons stated that this system, although different from the conventional store, has not caused great concern about customers with a tendancy to remove merchandise without paying.
In Sydney, the group was privileged to attend the Timber Congress, which was well orchestrated; a demonstration ofhow exciting a seminar of this type can be. Dealers also visited timber operations in Sydney while attending the Congress.
Australia is currently on the down side of building material sales and housing starts. As they state, they are in the trough at the present. During attendance at the Congress I found that the problems faced by the industry in Australia and New Zealand are identical to those we face in the US. Were it not for the accent of the speakers you would feel you were attending a US seminar. We all share very closely related industry problems.
We in the US should feel fortunate in not being required to carry the variety of dimension lumber that New Zealand and Australian dealers must carry. Those countries are on the metric system, which is enough of a problem, but lack of a uniform building code has caused each community to develop its own code. In many cases each requires a different size of dimension lumber for studs, trusses and joists. The lumber dealer, in many cases, must cut to size after the home owner or contractor submits his order.
The Australian dealers stated that 800/o of their timber is imported and that 800/o of that figure is imported from the West Coast of the US. The timber is shipped green in cant form and is remanufactured in Australia and New Zealand. They are faced with a problem in the port because most unloading is from ship to litter to dock rather than directly olTloading onto docks.
After a very enjoyable stay in Sydney, and a special Lord Mayor's reception and luncheon, the group headed for Tahiti for an inspection of the residential building material market potential in Papeete. Prices are approximately three times as high in Tahiti, which is under French rule.
From Tahiti it was off to American Samoa and Pago-Pago. It was a welcome relief to get back to a country where the American dollar was used and we could readily determine what price we were paying without the mental gymnastics. American Samoa gave us the opportunity to review our visits and get our notes together before the long trip back to the US via Hawaii.

Dr. Yamahiro stressed that while individuals might reject others' beliefs and behaviors, it was a mistake to reject them as people. After the second half of the product show that followed, G. Robert Claypool, group v.p. and controller of the building materials group of the CertainTeed Corp., presented an excellent working seminar on cash flow management.
Management must manage the balance sheet and should beware of becoming overly sales oriented, he said. By forecasting cash needs, as Claypool demonstrated with a series of slides in conjunction with work books provided the dealers, a business can put more money into its owner's pockets.
He said that basically, cash flow was a function of two things: (1) To whom we sell; and watch that, he added and (2) What we sell, and make it a good, profitable inventory, he stressed.

An additional sales and buying office is maintained in Grass Valley, Ca., staffed by Elmer Lewis and Bill Novak.
A comprehensive mill building, centrally located in the yard, includes an office, saw filing room and a lunch room. Machinery includes a 16x24 bull sizer (for timbers); a 6xl5 planer matcher; a 7" line-bar resaw and a center split resaw. An ingenious fence machine makes a series of cuts, then moves the pieces to alazy Susan for sorting and eventual assembly.
Approximately 3.5 million board feet of timbers can be stored in the yard, under a system ofwater pipes that ensures complete sprinkling.
There are currently 3 new White Freightliners (and 6 trailers) sporting the blue and white All-Coast colors parked in the yard, within eyeshot of the White Freightliner
plant across the street. But appearances are deceiving, because All-Coast didn't buy the trucks across the street, but rather in Vancouver, British Columbia. It seems that through some transactions involving Canadian dollars, AllCoast was able to save $7,500 a rig by buying in far-off Vancouver with Canadian dollars, rather than from the plant across the street.
MORE SERVICE
All-Coast, which is a division of Hampton Lumber Sales Co. in Portland, plans a big expansion in the service phase of their business which includes purchase of l3-15 new tractors and 25-30 trailers. Their geographical distribution area includes California. Nevada. Arizona. Colorado. Utah and West Texas. Present national selling encompasses railcars of cedar and pine, but will soon include mixed car shipments going to eastern markets.
All-Coast is not alone. incidentally. in the small framing community of Chino, some 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Parr Lumber Co. is building a distribution yard
and International Forest Products has had a facility there for several years. Barr Lumber Co. has l0 acres and Santa Ana Lumber Co. also has property; both reportedly plan retail operations. Rumors abound of other forest products companies planning to build.
With All-Coast's seasoned team of professionals and their sophisticated sales and distribution facility, it seems a fair bet that we're all going to hear a lot more from the little town of Chino.
L-P's New Sonora Division
Louisiana-Pacific Corp. has sold to Itel Corp. for $2.2 million its long term lease on the former Fibreboard Corp. headquarters building in San Francisco.
Sale of the lease was made possi- ble by Louisiana-Pacific's reorganization of the Fibreboard operations into four new L-P divisions. Fibreboard's forest products operations, heart of the merger, have been formed into the new Sonora division of L-P, headquartered in Standard, Ca., just outside of Sonora.

A new hardwood importation company, called Sumwood, Inc., is being formed by Jim Summerlin, who recently resigned from Robert S. Osgood, Inc. of Los Angeles, the MacMillan-Jardine subsidiarv.
"I have always felt that the importation of hardwoods," notes Summerlin, "is a very personalized business and to be done properly it must be purchased and sold by the same person, Sumwood is being created to work within this framework of personalized service," he said.
Expected to be operational by early December, Sumwood's mailing address is P.O. Box 45822, Los Angeles 90045.
Summerlin has spent the past 11 years in wood product import/ export.
SUPPORT MERCY KILLING OF OLD TREES
"How would you like to be eaten alive by bugs? Support mercy killing of old trees! A noble giant of the forest. ruler of his domain for several hundred years deserves a more honorable death than to be eaten alive by insects!
"And you sawmills can go a step further and give these proud trees a dignified memorial service by selling the clear lumber to us. We will make mouldings and door jambs from the lumber which will be sent to the Deep South where they love to apply a natural finish rather than hide the beauty of the grain with (ugh) paint.
"Really now, does a 300 year old tree deserve to be converted to plywood and be covered by a rug and walked on? Or be covercd with vinyl and be put on a wall, made to look like ash or fruity pecan?
"We will treat your trees with the reverence and respect that they deserve. "

Continued strong plywood demand seen
Members of the American Plywood Association heard the good news at their Fall Meeting, in Biloxi, Ms., that the plywood industry is in the midst of its third consecutive record production year.
And while a home building decline will impact the 1979 plywood market, strong demand from nonhousing applications should hold next year's production to a level only a quarter billion square feet below the anticipated 19.5 billion feet of 1978.
For 1980. the outlook is for resumed industry growth, with production expected to go over the 20 billion foot mark. . given continued promotional effort.
The importance of promotion as the key factor in protecting and enlarging today's diversified
plywood markets was stressed by APA Board Chairman Frank V. Langfitt, Jr., a Georgia-Pacific v.p.
He pointed to an expected home building decline as the main reason why the plywood industry's string of record production will undergo a "pause" in 1979.
"Higher interest rates and a tighter supply of mortgage dollars will take its toll on home building," he said. "It now appears there will be at least 150,000 fewer singlefamily housing starts next year, or roughly 1.15 million units. Multifamily construction should hold its own or show a slight increase." (Total starts this year are estimated at 1.85 million units. The estimate for 1979 is 1.7 million total units.)
Langfitt commented that in the past, a l2o/o deuease in single-
family housing starts would have caused a similar decline in plywood production. "Thanks to our industry's highly successful market diversification program, the American Plvwood Association is forecasting a drop in next year's production of less than 2ol0," he a of advised.
Among markets compensating for the housing falloff, Langfitt cited the "booming" residential repair and remodeling sector, likely to consume nearly 4 billion sq. ft. of production next year; industrial applications, expected to require about 3.2 billion feet; nonresidential construction, targeted as a 2.5 billion sq. ft. market in 1979; and exports.

The APA board chairman had encouraging news of solid headway and greater rewards just ahead as a return for the industry's many years of investment in promotion beamed at Western Europe.
"Our program to develop international markets is battling back from the recent recession in Europe and the trade disadvantage we experienced when the value of the Canadian dollar took a nosedive last year," he noted. "During recent months, APA has made real progress in overcoming code obstacles and promoting the acceptance of American-made plywood in several nations. This is the first step toward tapping the tremendous market potential of Western Europe."
The trend toward increased plywood consumption in Europe could eventually lead to a l0 billion sq.. ft. market, Langfitt suggested.

New Joist Design
An innovative new joist design has been introduced to the residential building market by Trus Joist. Residential TJI features better load carrying performance and lighter weight, according to the Boise, Id., firm.
That combination enables Residential TJI to deliver 16" on-center performance wlth 24" o.c. spacing. This can mean up to a 3O% savings in material.
It uses the firm's exclusive Micro= Lam for the top and bottom | 314" flanges. The web is 3/8" plywood. TJI is available in lengths to 56' for continuous, multiple spans.
While a typical 26' joist weighs less than 50 lbs. and can be easily
handled by one carpenter, it is 3O% stiffer than I I select dense structural Douglas fir solid sawn 2 x 10.
TJI frames faster than conventional lumber, the company avers. No special tools are required and it saws and nails like solid sawn.
Jiffy Offices
CleCon In-Plant Offices, a full line of economical, modular, demountable office structures, complete with 4' X 9'panels, doors, windows, metal framing, electrical hookups and ceiling deck, light fixtures and tiles, is new from CleCon,Inc.

The usercan readily change the size or shape of the office, and can demount. move and remount the entire structure. The modular structures are ideal for in-plant enclosute such as supervisory offices, cafeterias, laboratories, quality control and master gauge rooms, and comPuter enclosures.
Get This Brick
Marlite brand exterior brick panels can be applied as quickly and efficiently as siding, and eighteen "bricks" can be installed at one time, according to the firm.
A patented watershed interlock reportedly seals weather out on all four sides and covers the nail heads as well. Panels are pre-mortared to further reduce installation time, and are made from crushed stone reinforced with fiberglass. They weigh 4 lbs, and saw smoothly with an ordinary hack saw or power saw.
Round Celling Diffuser
Lima Register Co.'s Round Ceiling Diffuser and Round Damper are factory attached to a filler panel, for T-Bar layin installations. Round duct or flexible duct can be attached directly to the damper, eliminating the necessity of square to round transition.
A major benefit is that the installer does not have to cut or fit the diffuser into the ceiling tile himself. Instead, he can order a diffuser and damper already centered and mounted in a filler panel that has been cut to fit the T-Bar spacings. Then, he replaces the entire block with the factory assembled filler panel, diffuser and damper.
Drying Rack
More than 27 lineal feet of laundry drying space are offered on a new rack requiring less than 3 sq. ft. of floor space, available from Putnam Rolling Ladder Co.
Compact, accordion-fold rack is made of kiln-dried hardwood. The doweling and frames are smoothed to a snag-free finish, and the zinc finished steel locking mechanism is rust-proof.
Product Mover
Bargain Bin is a novel approach in merchandising to maximize product turnover, new from Ajax Hardware. The attractive corrugated board merchandiser holds slowest-selling, close-out items. Easy-to-assemble, it is 70" hieh and requires only 2' of floor space. It can be divided into either five or ten separate compartments. Each section has toom for a sample piece on the front panel and can hold up to 100 pieces of poly-bagged hardware. Customers can thus examine items on the bin front without having to open the packages.

Random Plank Paneling
Eliminating the fastidious and slow job of piecing together short random lengths of redwood paneling to achieve the proper random plank look, with its shared amounts of cinnamon tones and creamy sapwood, Simpson Timber Company has Random Plank LaHonda paneling.
The 3/8" thick planks of clear grade redwood have been finger- jointed essentially into single boards and multiples to make quick-to-put-up lightweight 8', l0' or I 2' lengths.
They are tongue-andgroove for perfect fit; reversible, with one face, rough textured and the other smoothj They are easy to install with panel adhesives, nails or staples.
Recommended for new construction and remodeling, the new lengths rapidly transform walls, cathedral entryways and ceilings in a fraction of the time originally needed, the firm says.
Apply planks vertically, diagonally, or horizontally to achieve a distinctive pattern. Use in a small area as an accent or backdrop. Design possibilities are limitless. In areas not sub- ject to soiling, panels may be left unfinished. Otherwise a sealer or lacquer is recommended to preserve the natural beauty of the wood. Packaged in 4" and 5" widths.
Mending Hardware
Leigh Products' mending hardware category includes l2 popular sizes for household use, including T-Plates, Corner Irons, Corner Braces and Mending Plates.

New Cedar Panel
The bold character of cedar paneling has a new look with the introduction of Mark X Westbrook Cedar interior paneling from Oregon's Roseburg Lumber Co.
Random face veneers have been toned and protected with an alkyd urea finish to accent the inherent beauty of the wood. New, artisan "V" grooving and cross-scoring give a handsome, wood-plank effect.
The rugged 7116" thick, five-ply construction of Westbrook Cedar allows it to be applied directly to studs with no prior preparation of the wall required.
Double-wall Log Building
A double-wall system of building homes with Pan Abode pre-cut logs has an insulation R value of 9.6, and can be increased to R 25.6 with only 2" of rigid foam insulation between the walls.
The double-wall system of solid Western red cedar 3" x 6" logs, separated by a 4" ai cavity, takes advantage of the natural insulation properties of cedar combined with the insulating air space in the walls. By adding insu- lation in the cavity, total R value will exceed the most stringent energy conservation requirement.
Because of the thermal mass of the wood logs, a home built with the double-wall system reduces temperature variations in winter as heat cycles on and off or as doors are opened and closed, and eliminates cold downdrafts off the walls. In summer, the massive timbers reverse the procedure.
From an aesthetic viewpoint, the interior walls are single and can often be stopped at the inside edge of the outside walls, reducing the number of breaks in the wall.

Forced Air Wood Stove
A new forced air wood stove. utilizing an efficient secondary combustion chamber, is new from Baker Hydra-Fork Co.
It has a rear fan and heated air discharge to provide evenly radiated heat flow. Capable of heating an entire home by connecting the discharge to the house's forced air ducts, it reportedly will help reduce substantially the average home heating bill and could eliminate the use of home furnace in some instances.
It accepts unsplit logs over 9" in diameter and burns them completely. The large firebox and outstanding heat retention qualities of the firebrick and refractory lining make it easy to heat a large home completelyovernight and longer-with proper draft/damper settings.
Straight & Narrow
A versatile light weight diy Line and Surface Level, measuring just 3" ('7/z mm) long, is new from Macklanburg-Duncan Co.
It uses a single vial which can be read from the top, bottom or either side, or from the end when the level is used as a plumb-bob. When the level is suspended on a line to align masonry or plumbing, line sag is negligible for maximum accuracy. It is also Vgrooved for leveling pipe and other round surfaces.
Building Surface Saver
Defender 3100, from Hampton Paint Mftg. Co., deals with problems of cracking, peeling and mildew that even the best conventional paint systems can't solve and, also, as a cinder block coating for institutions. etc.
This durable, soil resistant, estheticaly pleasing coating will bridge gaps, cracks and hollows in a single application and is an invaluable aid when covering cinder block, old wood, or previously painted surfaces, according to the company. It is for use on cinder block, masonry, shingle, composition or wood siding and even directly to galvanized metal. It reportedly bonds with the surface to form a protective film over 4 times the thickness of conventional paint.
Greening of the Patio
The diy'er can now enjoy a transluxent patio roof or backyard fence in a delightful new stripe pattern called Spring Green, reports Vistron Corp.
It can best be described as a pairing of fresh outdoor greens with bands of cloud-like white. It is the newest (and fifth) pattern of Filon-Stripes, the line of multi-colored earth tone translucent fiberglass reinforced plastic panels.
The panels are in crisp, modern ribbed design with alternating stripes of two shades of green on a cool, white ground. The pattern complements shrubs, trees and lawns, providing homeowners with the opportunity to return to the natural look in outdoor design and home improvement. It transmits a cool, diffused light from the sun, to filter out 7O% of the solar heat, to make for cool and colorful outdoor living, the firm reports.

Noting that many manufacturers no longer honor bulk orders for hinges, nuts, bolts, drawer pulls and knobs, Bradford says, "There are only a few of us around these days who still carry hardware items in bulk. The time may be close when the bins will give way to racks of packaged items."
The third oldest business in town, the Modesto Lumber Co. officially was born in 1890 of two earlier enterprises. Moore & Smith Lumber Co. and the A.A. Jackson Lumber Co., both founded in 1878. Austin D. Moore was the first president of the company, Francis Christiansen, a 50-year employee of the firm is the current president. Clarkson Bradford, Jr., is a member of the family in whom ownership in the company has resided since the early days, when total ownership was achieved by acquiring the shares of W. H. Talbot, of Pope & Talbot fame.
The firm's present concern for
the customer and its attempts to hold down prices is no recent thing. Many years ago, in an effort to get the Southern Pacific Railroad to reduce its rates for hauling lumber, C. R. Tillson, the family member who then headed the firm, hired a river schooner. in San Francisco.to
bring in a load of lumber, which was then hauled to the yard by a horse and team.
As a local historian notes, "One trip proved sufficient to reduce substantially the lumber rate by rail to the Modesto area for many years. "

Western Maple
El IG LEAF maple (Acer MacrolJphylJum) or as it is becoming more widely known, western maple, is a fast growing true maple which prospers in the fertile lowlands of the Pacific Northwest.
Because of its limited growing area compared to the eastern soft and hard maples, this Pacific Coast species has remained little known outside of its native western portions of the United States and Canada. However, the supply is surprisingly large. The U.S. Forest Service conservatively estimates the western or big leaf maple saw timber availability at in excess of 2.2 billion board feet.
This figure is even more impressive when it is remembered that the Forest Service only counts trees I l" in diameter and larger which are at least 25% sound. Western maple is also benefitting from improvements in logging methods which are promoting the growth of this prolific seeder.
Increasing numbers of furniture & cabinet manufacturers are expressing an interest because of its current freedom from export influence, the consistency of supply and certain
favorable comparisons with the better known eastern maples.
For example, western maple yields comparable average widths as hard maple, tends to be free of stain and does not present worm holes.
Sellers of the wood say it offers the following reasons for consideration:
(1) Color is more stable with less variation than all soft maples and most hard maples.
(2) Easier to mill than eastern maple.
Story at a Glance
This relatively little known western hardwood has been gaining increasing interest with furniture and cabinet manufactu rers.
(3)
Less fall-down and reject from machining operations than hard maple.
(4)
More dimensionally stable than hard maple or birch, ash, beech, gum.
(5) Not as soft as basswood, aspen or poplar - will take more abuse and scuffing.
(6) Can be easily embossed and grained.
(7) Rigidity and compressed strength make it ideal for frame construction.
(8) Availability in all thicknesses from4l4 to 1214.
(9) Better jointing strength with screws, staples, dowels or glue blocks than poplar, silver maple, gum, red oak.

Dear Mr. Curran:
I'm not sure where you got your lumber production figures, but you can appreciate my surprise on learning that Pope & Talbot was not included in your table 4 listing of what appears to be the 14 largest producers following the top 10.
Attached is a copy of ont 1977 annual report, which indicates that Pope & Talbot's 1977 lumber production amounted to approximately 340 million board feet of lumber which surely sets it aside as one of the nation's leading lumber producers.
Naturally, in any future analysis of this type we would appreciate inclusion of Pope & Talbot and its substantial lumber production in any type of productional listing. As indicated earlier I am still confused as to why we were left out of this listing. It appears as if your information source is not complete.
Respectfully

Due to the many phone calls (and a few notes) I received after writing you before, (see The Merchant, Sept. p. Sil1 decided to put together a few of the many names I soon learned upon moving to San Diego in 1949. They were and are a damn good bunch of lumbermen to say the least, and smart too.
I believe the first one I met was George Johnson from National City, who stopped by with "diplomatic" Gene Zeiss of The Lumbermens Service Bureau to solicit our membership. Soon I got to know Merle Baker; Cliff Roberts (a great Hoo Hoo'er) who was holding Benson together; the Smiths, Herb and Joe,and Chet Whalen from Century; Dick Gurney, Art Jensen and that "man among men" Bill Cowling, Sr. who ran Dixie up in North Park on Ohio St.
Then there were Freds, Jr. and Sr. (Griswold) who owned Empire, just down the Santa Fe tracks with Johnny Nikkel. The Glassons were and still are on South Main.
Remember that family yard in El Cajon, W. D. Hall with Rex and Grant at the helm? I believe almost 20 "Halls" worked there at one time. Also, Larry Ingraham who managed Home Lumber in Chula Vista for many years. Klicka Lumber had closed but "Pete" became a good friend and customer in those early days across from Lindberg Field on old Hwy. l0l.
About this time Bob Reid ran La Mesa Lumber as Don Olson does today. And downtown George Cordrey
Merchant Magazine was the affable boss of Patten-Blinn. George was later secretary-manager of the lumbermen's association and even Helen Peterson, that exceptionally beautiful personality, will tell you he is a great guy.
Back then they called it Smith Trevor out in East San Diego and Harold Smith was "the man." Today it's H. G. Smith Lumber Co. on Federal Blvd. and Jim Gilchriest rules the roost. Syd Smith (no relation) had a little yard down towards National City. Syd was an old timer in San Diego.
Al Frost, Sr. was general manager at San Diego Lumber and Harry McGahey (a hell of a lumfelrnsn) was his right hand. The Easterly's, Olin and Jim, as well as Hugh McConnell played important roles in the success of "San Diego Lumber."
Glen Miner and Paul Stake were "running the spread" at l4th and Island, known as Whiting Mead.
At the foot of Columbia, "beadyeyed" Cy lrving bossed Western Lumber for the Sullivan family before John took the reins a few years later.
Now if that isn't a fine group I never knew one. But, boy, competition was keen.
The wholesalers in town were the Evenson's (American Mill and Lumber), Frost, Sullivan, M. Herrmann & Son (Marv), and "Ty" Cobb. Carl & Gus sold under the name of "Cal-Mex Lumber Co." and I guess still do.
Soon came to town Ed Boies with TW & J and Jack Phelps with USP and somewhere along in here John Ransom started selling for Dant and Russell on 28th St. where Dixieline later had a yard.
As the years went by I met more and more lumbermen in San Diego County, among them Gene Gauthier and Bobby Meredith, the Larricks, Sr. & Jr., Amos Geib and Bobby Lee, and the "W Gentlemen" Warren and Bill and Carl Bauer. Then I had the good fortune to meet "Bill" and "Otie" Heald, well here I am today. Bill is gone but Otie is teaching me more about the business everyday.

A few of those still in the industry who worked so hard and helped keep the doors open at "Airline" [a forqrunner of today's Dixieline Lumberl are Gil Freese, Bill Hamilton, Paul Dahlson, Bob Cole and Phil Warren at Dixieline, Saul Love of Lumber Purveyors, Willard Ellison of Boise Cascade, Art Fisher of Westy's Oceanside, Ray Bell of Wickes, Merlyn Johnson of Santa Ana Lumber, and "Sherm" Williams of Tom Thumb Lumber. Vista.
AI am happy to share these memories with you and your readers, and before long I will write again about the new and old friends we have met since coming to "Fallbrook for finest California living" in 1973.
Sincerely,
Bob Sutton Fallbrook Lumber Co.

P.S. I sure miss Grover Sanders. don't you?
