Warehousemen have always known that the potential for injury or even death lurks in highly stacked piles of merchandise. Now the public is painfully aware. In recent years, as retail warehouses proliferated, serious injuries and fatalities increased markedly.

This summer, a Connecticut man was killed when a 2,000-lb. pallet of landscaping timbers collapsed on him; in November, a bundle of latticework at a Los Angeles store fell on a 79-yearold woman, breaking many of her bones, inflicting fatal injuries; in May, a 3-year-old girl was killed when a countertop fell off a forklift, shattered, and sent splinters flying into her body. All three events occured in Home Depots. These are not isolated incidents, nor is this problem anything new.

In 1985, a 70-year-old Briscow, Ok., woman was killed in one of Wal-Mart's Sam's Club stores when boxes of fabric softener landed on her. In 1992, a 3-year-old girl died after a falling

door struck her at a San Diego, Ca., Home Depot. In 1994, a 46-year-old woman was killed when a 3,000-lb. pallet of ceramic tile in a HomeBase collapsed on her. In 1996, at a Sam's Club in Abilene, Tx., a child died after a wardrobe toppled onto her. In 1991 , a 2-year old-girl was killed when a 100-pound tv cabinet fell on her. In 1998, a Home Depot official testified that the company received 185 injury claims per week involving falling merchandise.

The warehouse retailers assert that they have instituted safety procedures and that, given the millions of customers in their stores annually, the number of accidents is minimal. Depot spokeswoman Carol Schumacher says, "People should be aware that they are in a working warehouse. You need to be aware of what's going on around you just like when you're driving a car."

We doubt public opinion will find that a satisfying response.

National I- Hardwood Lumber Association is seeking support in its battle against a host of legislation that holds detrimental consequences for everyone involved in the hardwood industry.

Of primary importance to the industry are bills involving "wood packing material," since 457o of all hardwood goes into the manufacture ofpallets. Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher (R-Ca.) and Robert Matsui (D-Ca.) recently introduced the "Landfill Reduction Act of 2000," a pro-plastic pallet bill under the guise of protecting the environment. NHLA had been successful in thwarting the introduction of such a bill twice in the previous six months.

NHLA is working with other industry groups to correct misinformation about the environmental effects of wood pallets.

The new bill would increase the expense deduction for costs related to "qualified reusable pallet and container property" from $20,000 (for taxable years beginning in 2000) to $500,000. This one-year expensing would replace the generally applicable sevenyear capitalization and depreciation applied to such equipment.

Qualified expenses include a broad range of costs associated with re-tooling for use of leased "reusables" (i.e., plastic rather than wood pallets), including harvesting, packing, clean-

ing and maintenance. Reusables may include wood pallets as long as the pallets are used under an arrangement (lease) for repeated return of the property to initial purchasers.

"However," notes NHLA executive manager Paul Houghland, "it is clear that the ultimate intent of such a bill is to offer tax incentives for users to move toward plastic pallet and container systems and away from traditional wooden pallets."

NHLA is working with other interested industry groups to correct misinformation about the environmental effects of hardwood pallets.

Another recommendation, now facing a bureau of the Commerce Department overseeing rules that govern manufactured wooden products, would force all wood used for pallets and containers to be kiln dried or pressure treated. The danger NHLA sees is its chain of custody provision, which demands that such wood packing be marked or accompanied by a certificate for identification and verification.

On the transportation front, NHLA reveals that the U.S. Department of Transportation is moving ahead with its plan to revise the Hours of Service (HOS) rules for truck drivers, which will adversely affect the delivery of wood fiber from the forest to the mill. The scheduled hearings were held in June, concluding June 30 in Atlanta, Ga.

Although the vast majority of participants oppose the proposed changes to the HOS rules, federal DOT offi-

cials did not give any indication that changes would be made to the proposed rules, according to Jo Ann White, director of safety management compliance for Frankie Arrants Trucking, Jamesville, N.C. As part of her testimony, White stressed that it would be impossible for log truckers to comply with the mandatory weekend provision because of the uncertainty of weekly wood delivery sched-. ules due to weather and market-related shutdowns.

The deadline to submit written comments has been extended to October 30, 2000. NHLA suggests statements incorporate the following points:

o Under the proposed rules, the daily (Type 4) driver would be limited to 12 hours on duty each day (current rule permits l5 hours) and 60 hours on duty each week (current rule permits 70 hours per eight consecutive days), combined with a mandatory weekend provision (minimum of 32 hours offduty every seven days-no such requirement in current rules).

Under the proposed rules, haulers of forest products would not be able to make up for "lost loads" later in the week due to the mandatory weekend requirement.

. States would no longer be able to issue variances to the federal requirements to help compensate for weatherrelated and other causes of inconsistent delivery schedules.

o Finally, under the proposed rules, the partial exemption for agriculture no longer includes forest products. "Remember," stresses Houghland, "the most important comments to include are how the proposed HOS rules mav affect vour business."

THE renewed popularity in recent I years of wood flooring has been a trend spurred not only by taste but also by economics.

Technology has introduced hardwood flooring in a diverse range of styles and price ranges. Yet all flooring is not created equal.

The main types include:

Solid wood flooring comes in three basic types:

* Strip flooring accounts for the majority of installations. Strips usually come 2-l/4" wide, but also in widths ranging from l-l/2" to 3-114". They are installed by nailing to the subfloor.

* Plank flooring boards are at least 3" wide. Thev mav be screwed to the

subfloor as well as nailed. Screw holes can be covered with wooden plugs.

* Parquet flooring comes in standard patterns of 6"x 6" blocks. Specialty patterns may range up to 36" square units. Parquet often achieves dramatic geometric effects of special design patterns. Parquet can be glued to a variety of subfloor materials.

Solid wood floors can be installed on a concrete slab as long as the floor is on or above ground level. They can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use.

Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in a home's

relative humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall. Base moulding is the traditional "cover-up" for this gap.

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood flooring is made of several layers of different woods or different grades of the same wood cross-stacked and glued together under heat and pressure. Its greater dimensional stability allows it to be installed in areas where solid wood is not compatible due to moisture. above, on or below ground level.

engineered strip and plank can be nailed down, which requires a wood subfloor. Some with thicker top layers can be sanded up to three times. Others can't be sanded at all.

Wood Laminates

Wood laminate flooring features a plywood base topped with a layer of veneer. Plies and thicknesses varv. but most common is three-ply. 3/8"

Aside from its core, plastic laminate flooring isn't wood.

flooring, half as thick as the typical solid hardwood floor. The veneer topping of wood laminate floors (commonly l/8" thick) can be sanded and refinished (at most, up to three times). Most manufacturer warTanties cover the finish for five years.

Synthetic/Plastic Laminates

Aside from its core, plastic laminate flooring isn't wood. Usually l/2" thick, plastic laminate flooring consists of a fiberboard center wrapped in top and bottom layers of high-pressure laminate-a tougher version of the same material used in many kitchen countertops. These floors cannot be sanded or refinished and must be removed when they wear out. They usually come with 10- or I 5-year manulacturer warranties against fading, stains and wear.

Laminate flooring often comes as "floating wood floors," which are glued to each other, with no direct attachment to the subfloor. They literally "float" above the subfloor, allowing the flooring to be installed in every level of the home and over most types of subfloors, as long as the subfloor is level and structurally sound.

Floating floors are manufactured in large panels with square or interlocking edges and ends, making installation faster and easier.

Hardwood Flooring vs. Laminates

Laminate flooring has allowed people to achieve the look of hardwood floors for a fraction of the cost. But, cautions the Hardwood Manufacturers Association, you get what you pay for.

HMA suggests that if customers look closely at an entire laminate floor, they'll notice that the faux "woodgrain" pattern repeats itself. That's because synthetic laminate flooring is actually a photograph of real wood stuck to a wood composite.

Laminates, HMA claims, don't sound like real wood either. Walk across one, especially in high heels. and you'll probably hear a more hollow sound than you would on real wood.

The printed wood image on laminate floors is extremely thin and when chipped, exposes the fiberboard core of the panel. And, unlike real wood, laminate floors can't be sanded and refinished. When the laminate floor wears out, it must be ripped up and thrown away.

The durability of real wood floors, on the other hand, is determined by its finish (see charts along bottom). Wellmaintained hardwood floors with a polyuretnane llnlsn are water-resistant, making them suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. Wood floors are environmentally friendly, and they add to the value of a home. A recent survey of real-estate agents estimates solid hardwood floors can add as much as $7,000 to $10.000 to a home's resale value.

la\ONFUSION has many within the \-,building products industry wondering what their long-term e-commerce strategy should be. New opportunities in business-to-consumer (B2C), business-to-business ( B28), and online exchanges continue to pop up. But even the most lucrative are unproven-and still await large-scale buy-in. So what really lies ahead in this industry?

What should businesses do to get involved-safely? Should they take a wait-and-see approach? The answers vary for individual companies. But there are two major e-commerce models (B2C and B28) to consider implementing now so your business can ride this wave through the next decade.

Setting up a consumer- or retailoriented e-commerce marketplace is one approach. Popular B2C sites include Amazon.com and Buy.com. A few lumberyards also have Web sites allowing customers to make purchases. Each follows a consumer-oriented business model where buyer and seller may, or may not, know each other and payment is made in advance via credit card. Roofers for example, can now go to Amazon.com to buy a Hitachi roofing nailer and have it shipped anywhere in the U.S.

A few other retail sites. such as eBay, function as auctions, but to date have had little effect on building product distribution. As they expand, auctions and other bid-type systems may play a role in selling commodities such as lumber.

A Web-based B28 environment can be set up using different models, with each essentially allowing transactions to occur through an open account with established customers, either through a back-end office system or through an Internet ordering tool. Through an open account. an item can be ordered, shipped, billed and then paid for later.

Internet-enabled B2B ordering systems can be:

o Provided as a function of a backend business management system;

. Customized modifications of a back-end management system;

. Implementations of an Internetbased third-party order entry system, such as BroadVision:

o Provided by an exchange service infrastructure for multiple buyers and sellers to exchange transactions.

EntryNET, DMSi's online ordering and quoting tool, is an example of a standard Web-based order entry module provided as an extension of the

back-end business system. Directly integrated within the normal business processes, it extends the order entry process to customers, allowing them to review customer-specific pricing, check availability, enter orders and monitor existing orders in real time.

Of the four opportunities, it's the simplest way to do business over the lnternel. It's the least expensive. easiest and quickest to implement and most flexible. Entering orders directly with back-end update means there's no data to re-key and infbrmation is provided in real time without a lag from inlermediate mapping steps.

Similar applications can be custombuilt into an individual back-end software system, but most likely at greater expense due to the cost of reinventing the wheel. All processes must be developed fiom scratch for the onetime use for that individual business. Costs to maintain the compatibility with new releases of the software add to the overall investment.

Some of the new Internet-based ecommerce business solutions on the market such as BroadVision are also an option. but can be quite expensive. Some cost over $l million dollars to start. Integrating them into your backend system is also expensive and time consuming. Maintaining compatibility with upgrades to front-end and back-end systems further complicate matters.

Another new B2B alternative now

Even the most lucrative are unproven-and still await large-scale buy-in.

gaining prominence is the online exchange. These are much like business communities and provide the infrastructure for a many-to-many sales venue. Unlike the one-to-many concepts already discussed, exchanges provide a forum for multiple buyers and multiple sellers to conduct business. They can be a place to nurture existing one-to-one relationships, a way to meet new customers, or a more convenient way to conduct business transactions with existing customers.

Online exchanges include BuildNet, T.qlpx, e-Wood, Channelinx, Conduit, WWWood.net and others.

ly construction. It functions as a part of the structural system, and as a finish surface on the interior.

Several manufacturers, including Filler King, Disdero Lumber Co. and Boozer Laminated Beam Co., are now producing laminated decking in a variety of new finishes, textures, thicknesses and widths.

Lam decking provides construction economies because it not only serves as an integral part of the structural system, but also as a finish surface. Also, wood is less expensive than a steel roof system because the steel would require drywalling lor fire protection.

Most of the laminated decking sold by dealers goes into commercial and industrial building, but a good volume is also specified for exposed cathedral ceilings in upscale custom homes.

Dealers report that lam decking is ideal for swimming pools and ice rinks because it eliminales corrosion problems associated with bar joist and steel deck roof construction.

Gray Lumber, Tacoma, Wa., reports increased demand for lam decking. Manager Jack deleon says his firm gets orders by following the bid process on schools and churches. He attends AIA meetings to familiarize architects with glulams, lam decking and other engineered products.

Laminated decking has become more popular at Gray Lumber because unlike solid sawn lumber decking, its special T&G joints can connect in the middle of a span, without being supported directly on a roofjoist or truss.

In business since l92l, Alki Lumber, West Seattle, Wa., has a strong identity throughout the Western Washington marketplace as a supplier of laminated decking.

LAMINATED decking combines the natural beauty ol wood with the structural integrity of an engineered timber rool system.

D ETAILERS are becoming a major l\link in the distribution chain for laminated roof decking. Many dealers who sell glulam beams are now supplying the complete package with laminated wood decking as the finish roof over the laminated beams.

Lam wood decking provides an attractive appearance when left exposed, and also avoids the need to suspend or hang ceilings to cover structural roof framing. The furring, sheathing and finishing often required with steel or other materials is eliminaled. meaning l'aster construction at a lower cost. Wood decking also has environmental benefits because it is manufactured from smaller. "second growth" logs, rather than mature or old growth timber.

Last year's drywall shortage also increased demand for laminated wood deck ceilings in single and multi-fami-

Most of its laminated decking goes into commercial buildings. Recently, the dealer supplied 50,000 bd. ft. of lam decking for a new building at a university in Seattle.

According to Alki's Dick Vinson, "Glulam beams and lam decking make a good package because they go together to provide strength and attractive aesthetics."

Laminated decking is available in six different species of softwoods, in 6" and 8" widths and nominal 2". 3". 4" and 5" thicknesses. Different surfaces are available including wire brushed, smooth sanded and saw-textured.

Lam decking is a structural engineered product with two to five laminations of kiln-dried 4/4 lumber. selected for strength and appearance. The laminations are bonded together with an exterior type waterproof adhesive, cured under pressure and machined to form a T&G on both edges and the ends. Average moisture content is 12Vo.

ROOM additions, such as the lamily room added by Carl Seidler, Roberts & Dybdahl, are a big markel for laminated wood decking. Cathedral ceilings with exposed decking make rooms look warmer and larger.

Pro Chains Join Forces Online

Seven of the nation's largest pro dealers are teaming up to develop a self-funded online marketplace for the LBM industry.

Builders FirstSource, Building Materials Holding Corp., Carolina Holdings, 84 Lumber, Lanoga Corp., Payless Cashways, and Wickes will fund the venture, which is open to all companies in the building supplies chain.

Members hope the venture will help standardize product descriptions and transaction communications.

Together, the seven founding chains generate over $10 billion in annual sales from more than 1,200 building centers and 80 manufacturing plants nationwide.

A Woman's Place ls In D-l-Y

Tools with smaller grips and gloves that accommodate long fingernails are just two examples of how the hardware industry is cognizant of the growing female d-i-y market.

Roughly 387o of all home-improvement purchases in 1999 were made by women, according to the American Hardware Manufacturers Association, a point not lost on retailers.

Lowe's, for instance, is redesigning its stores to make them more appealing to women, who account for 50Vo of purchases, said spokeswoman Chris Ahearn.

"We have wider, brighter aisles and we are clean and neat," she said. "Plus, we have signage that is easy to read."

Lawn and garden products manul'acturers also have begun courting female fixer-uppers by designing products to meet their needs.

One of them, Garden Pals, Mira Loma, Ca., has created lightweight gardening tools for women that the elderly and arthritis sufferers also can use.

"They wanted reduced-grip widths, stainless-steel blades that won't rust and locking mechanisms that can be operated with one hand," said Garden Pals' Victoria Addison, who noted that she relied on women for design tips for trowels, weeders and pruners.

Another firm, Midwest Quality Gloves, Chillicothe, Mo., has designed longer, narrower, female-friendly work gloves with reinforced fingertips to protect fingernails.

According to home improvement tv show host Ron Hazelton, many women lack the confidence to take on major projects such as knocking down walls, but are willing to do small jobs. Still, that is bound to change. "Once they try plumbing and electrical work, they will find it is not rocket science," he said.

Stimson To Buy ldaho

Idaho Forest Industries, Coeur d'Alene, Id., has tentatively agreed to sell its three North Idaho sawmills and approximately 89,000 acres of timberland to Stimson Lumber Co.. Portland, Or.

Sale of the mills in Coeur d'Alene, Priest River and St. Maries is expected to close at year end.

"We've bought a great company," said Stimson president Dan Dutton. "We share similar philosophies, management, objectives, people and products."

Stimson, founded in 1873, currently operates mills in Bonner and Libby, Mt.; Arden and Chehalis, Wa., and Forest Grove and Clatskanie. Or.: timberland management offices in Forest Grove, Newport, Wa., and Crescent City, Ca., and owns 20,315 acres of timberland in Idaho, plus over 260,000 acres in western Oregon, eastern Washington and Northern California.

has been involved since IFI was founded in 1916.

Tom Richards has been in charge since 1964, while his brother served as ceo of Potlatch Corp., a direct competitor with IFI for timber, until he retired in June 1999. Both cited health issues as contributing to their decision to sell.

According to Tom Richards, the key element in the transaction was the fit with Stimson and their willingness to employ substantially all of IFI's current employees.

As well, Stimson plans to continue running all three mills despite poor lumber market conditions. Richards has kept the mills running for 35 years with just two weeks of down time in 1981-due to low lumber prices and a boiler problem.

IFI recently completed $6 million worth of mill upgrades.

Prior to the sale, IFI had been considering building a larger, more efficient stud mill and selling its DeArmon Mill to nearby North Idaho College. President Jim English, who also is leaving IFI, predicts Stimson will continue those talks since the

existing site has "no room for that type of expansion."

Window Maker Going Green

Andersen Corp. said it will no longer buy wood from "endangered" forests, and will give preference to Forest Stewardship Council or equivalent certified wood supplies in manufacturing its windows and patio door products.

The firm primarily uses ponderosa pine and has increased its use of biofiber composite Fibrex material, made from waste wood fiber.

A survey of 203 Ace Hardware retailers revealed the importance of having friendly and knowledgeable employees, particularly when it comes to retaining customers.

When asked, l07o of customers said a knowledgeable staff is the most important reason why they continue to shop at a particular store. Conversely, 16Vo listed product pricing as their incentive to return.

Easily accessible and centrally located stores also got the nod for repeat business, as did retailers that offered product variety and hard-to-

find items. Friendly, approachable sales people was another favorite, along with employee familiarity.

"With a multitude of available shopping options, including those online, consumers are looking for stores that provide superior service," says Paula Erickson. an Ace consumer affairs manager. "That means store associates must be knowledgeable to answer customer questions, help find what they need and provide a positive shopping experience."

To boost business within the past year,737o of Ace retailers said they have incorporated new store layouts,

while 62Vo have refined product variety and 37Vo have renovated.

Huff To Sell Classic Glulams

Huff Lumber Co., Santa Fe Springs, Ca., has been named a wholesale distributor of Willamette Classic Glulams.

The 79-year-old firm, which serves yards in Southern California, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nv., has been distributing glulams for "about 20 years," according to president Mark Huff.

"We' ve distributed Willamette glulams in the past and they've always done a goodjob for us," he said.

Boxes Big In Golden State

Already home to one Home Depot, the affluent Sacramento suburb of Roseville, Ca., soon will have a second Depot as well as two Lowe's Home Improvement Centers.

All within a four-mile area, Depot and Lowe's both have stores under construction, with Lowe's second unit in the planning stages.

Lowe's also has plans for as many as 20 other Northern and Central California sites, including Folsom, Union City, Elk Grove and Chico.

Company Timber Town Sold

Simpson Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., has sold its company-owned town of Samoa, Ca., to an undisclosed buyer after a sealed-bid auction (see Aug., p.24).

The firm and the successful bidder will not divulge the buyer's identity until escrow closes, which should take about 60 days.

The prospective buyer has indicated that the town's historic identity will be preserved and that improvements will be made on many existing structures.

While devoid of stores, gas stations and a mayor, the 60-acre, 300-resident bayside hamlet does have 98 redwood-clad homes, an 11-room Victorian inn, 23,000 sq. ft. of commercial space and the popular Samoa Cookhouse, a two-story, 500-seat, logging camp-era dining hall.

Hammond Lumber operated the mills during the Depression and World War II, before selling the town to Georgia-Pacific, which then spun ir off to LouisianaPacific in 1973.

Simpson acquired Samoa two years ago as part of a large redwood timberlands purchase from LouisianaPacific.

Paperboard Supplier Sues G-P

Caraustar Industries, Austrell, Ga., has filed suit against Georgia-Pacific for breach of contract, claiming reduced purchases of gypsum-wallboard paper will decrease and force the paperboard and packaging products maker to close its Camden. N.J.. mill.

According to Caraustar, G-P violated a contract requiring it to use Caraustar's paper products in its wallboard manufacturing.

Caraustar said average sales to G-P, its largest customer, have fallen more than 807o since the first half of the year and are expected to drop further.

G-P has countersued, maintaining that Caraustar incorrectly characteized terms of the contract. G-P said the 10year contract, signed in 1996, requires it only to buy specific grades of paperboard-excluding products it makes itself.

Pro dealer-focused restructuring specialists Clark Sherman Colvin, Inc., Salem, Or., has a new name and an expanded focus as a private investment firm.

Newly-renamed CSC Capital Partners, Ltd., will seek to acquire, restructure and consolidate under-performing pro dealers into a nationwide chain.

The company currently is exploring opportunities in California, Arizona. Tennessee. Florida and Pennsylvania.

Explains managing partner Clark Colvin: "People don't appreciate the magnitude of opportunities existing for savvy investors who understand that an undervalued and under-managed, earnings-poor, commodity-oriented and incorrectly allocated assetbased industry is ripe for consolidation. Do things the other way around, and you can have an explosion in value creation."

Second and third generation family-owned and operated lumber companies can turn an unproductive business into part of a "nationwide money machine," says Colvin. "Lumber

companies have massive amounts of non-productive assets. So, why pay for an acquisition using debt when you can liquidate non-productive or under-productive assets and pay cash?"

He says current acquisitions in the industry seem to suffer in strategic intent. "Acquirers," Colvin explains, "focus on growth for growth sake, and marketshare expansion without a clear understanding of the debt service, distribution and low earnings risks associated with buyouts. Restructurings oriented toward achieving economies of scale are clearly missing. The consequences of such ill-fated plans can be seen all across the country."

annual traders-only show Nov. 2-4 in Dallas are outpacing last year's 1,881, itself markedly higher than the 1,500 visitors in 1998, 1,300 in 1997, and 750 at the first event in 1996.

The market's success stems, in part, from its short, no-frills schedule and focus on business rather than recreation. It is held over a weekend at an affordable and accessible loca-

tion. And attendees aren't top executives but rather salespeople and sales managers, the employees who do the actual trading. Strict rules ensure that the attendance isn't difuted (see attendance policy on page TM 6).

"It's a great opportunity," says Ted Roberts of Des Moines, Ia.-based Roberts & Dybdal, which operates l0 distribution centers throughout the Midwest. "It gives our traders the chance to interact with the manufacturers and

processors and discuss more efficient ways to distribute products."

The number of exhibitors also has grown, from 103 in 1996 to 157 in 1991,175 in 1998, and 236 last year. Although the show is again being held at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Tx., NAWLA has been able to rearrange the show floor to accommodate even more exhibitors. "We're adding 20-some booths to the main trade show floor," says NAWLA executive Nick Kent. "Last year, we had to turn away several companies that wanted to exhibit, which disappointed them and us, and was unfortunate for our general attendees, who expect to see the optimum number of exhibitors."

The "Cyber Connection" will now include a wide range of e-businesses, as well as remain open an hour and a half later than the main show, so exhibiting manufacturers can visit.

In all, NAWLA expects close to 300 exhibitors at this year's Traders Market. "We've supported it from Day One, and we've been very happy with it," says exhibitor Bob Mai, Potlatch Corp., Spokane, Wa. E-Opportunities For Troders

This year's NAWLA Traders Market will tackle wholesale lumber e-commerce issues on numerous fionts with the addition of enhanced. cyber-related events.

At an expanded Cyber Connection exhibit area off the rnain exhibit hall, 30+ cyber-related companies will be on hand to discuss their products and services and suggest solutions to attendees' current e-commerce needs (,see li,st below und e.rhibit hall map on p. TM l4). Attendees can even stay in touch with their customers and the office by checking their e-mail at two dedicated e-mail kiosks in the Cyber Connection.

As well. the day before the show opens, NAWLA is holding an E-Commerce Forum. Questions to be addressed include: How can doing business over the Internet help my cornpany? What is a portal? Who really buys and sells products via the Internet, anyway?

The day will begin with a videotape of the November l''National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors' satellite broadcast of "Success on the Internet: Real World Strategies for Wholesaler-Distributors." The video will feature successful wholesaler-distributors and industry experts who will provide critical insight into strategies that can lead to business success on the Internet.

Following the video and a bufl'et luncheon, a panel of speakers representing many different models of e-commerce will be present to discuss/defend their particular products/services, including portals and auctions. The panel will include Ross Elliott, Buildnet; Keith Russell, ForestExpress.com; Jim Clarke, LumberNet.com; Arnold Kraft, e-Wood.com; Alain Chalifour, Scoopsofi.com, and Joe Perraton, Forestlndustry.com.

As a follow-up to the speakers panel, a roundtable discussion will allow participants the chance to assess and fbrmulate their own "e-business" plans. Attendees will be able to engage in discussion regarding a business model that they would like to learn more about and discuss the pros and cons of a f'avorite model.

The all-day Nov. 2 seminar, which includes lunch, requires separate admission of $125 per registrant.

New Yard For New Year

Longtime Oregon developer and builder Bill Moody plans to open Junction City Home Improvement Center in the town that bears its name around the beginning of 2001.

"I think this area can use a good retail lumberyard," he said.

The store will be built on the former site of a 7,200-sq. ft. farm equipment dealership, and also will have a 75,000 sq. ft. yard.

Moody and partner Pat Farr, a former local True Value general manager, plan extensive remodeling of the current structure, including constructing an addition and paving the parking lot.

Longtime ldaho Retailer Sold

After nearly 40 years in the retail lumber and hardware business, Kent and Deloroes Hobbs have sold Preston Lumber Co., Preston, Id., citing Kent's health problems.

"The business is doing very well, but I've almost lost Kent twice this year for medical reasons," said Deloroes. "I did not want to run this place by myself."

While her husband would not reveal the name of the new owners. he

did say that the business would close Sept. 30.

"We're going to take a welldeserved vacation down the West Coast," he said. "The business will reopen Nov. I for a two-week period under new ownership with the same name. After the 15th, the new owners will decide what their plans are for the business."

"We'd like to see another lumber yard go back in," said Deloroes, "especially in the plumbing line, because we've been one of the biggest suppliers for Preston in the plumbing line."

She said that the building that houses Preston Lumber was owned at one time by Kent's great-great-grandfather, who operated a dance hall on the premises.

In 1904, Overland Lumber opened on the site, followed by Preston Lumber, which was founded in 1938 by R.J. McCaslin, who, according to Deloroes, owned yards in Idaho, Nevada and Oregon.

Kent Hobbs said that he began working at the yard not long after their 1968 wedding, and that his wife started shortly thereafter. The couple purchased the business in 1975.

Injured Employee Wins Case

A former Home Depot worker who allegedly suffered severe electric shock while operating a forklift was awarded $880,000 in a lawsuit against the distributor of the equipment. Larry Cundieff has not returned to work at the San Diego, Ca., store since sustaining the injury two years ago.

Distributor W.T. Billards, Santa Fe Springs, Ca., was ordered to pay the judgment, although Cundieff also is seeking $30,000 from Home Depot to cover medical and disability costs.

North American lumber and structural wood panel production is expected to decline somewhat in 2001, while LVL and wood l-joist output will increase, according to APA-The Engineered Wood Association and the Southern Forest Products Association. Both predict high oil prices and the Fed's desire to keep inflation in check will keep the economy from growing too fast.

The increased market growth of the past two years in remodeling and nonresidential construction is forecast to decrease as well due to slower job growth and higher interest rates. In turn, single and multifamily starts should slip from 1.58 million this year to 1.45 million in 2002, with current levels returning in 2005.

Single-family units each consume on average 14,200bd. ft. of lumber and 11,600 sq. ft. of structural panels (3/8" basis), while 5,540 bd. ft. of lumber and about 4,000 sq. ft. of structural panels are used per multifamily unit.

The weakening of the dollar and the expected recovery of European and eastern Asia economies should increase exports, partially offsetting the declines in housing starts. Europe, Japan, Mexico and the Caribbean account for threefourths of all North American lumber and panel exports.

While raw materials are expected to be sufficient, rising timber costs have hit the South especially hard. In the West, continued environmental restrictions on public and private timber, coupled with increased use of private timber supplies will lead to tighter western timber supplies over the next five years. Conversely, Canadian forests should continue to meet softwood lumber producers' needs, not withstanding new environmental legislation or other factors.

North American lumber production is forecast to decline 2Vo next year from 65.7 billion bd ft. to 64.5 billion, and to 63.3 billion bd. ft. in 2002,before increasing to 68.1 billion bd. ft. in 2005. U.S. production is expected to be 34.6 billion bd. ft. in 2001, with Canadian production at 29.9 btllion. While Canada exports almost two-thirds of its lumber production, the U.S. should consume 54 billion bd. ft. of lumber next year, of which 19.5 billion ft. will be imported.

Structural panel production in North America is expected to slip 2.37o to 39.1 billion sq. ft. (3/8" basis), with U.S. output at 2l.l billion ft., and Canada I 1.4 billion. OSB our put should exceed plywood production by about 1.2 billion bd. ft., growing to approximately 2.7 billion ft.by 2002 and approaching 9.6 billion three years later, when North American totals could reach 42 billion sq. ft.

Glulam timber production is forecast to be 355 million bd. ft. in 2001 for North America, increasing to 372 million ft. by 2002, and achieving a record high of about 475 million ft. by 2005. The increase will be largely influenced by the economic recovery of Japan, the glulam industry's largest export market. Another factor will be the increased use of glulams in place of solid sawn timbers. Total glulam exports should reach 25 billion bd. ft. this year, 35 million ft.by 2002 and about 45 million ft. by 2005.

Wood I-joist production is expected to continue to rise as more builders become familiar with the product and switch from lumber. This year's production is forecast to be 940 million linear ft. and to increase about 67o annually through 2005 to 1.4 billion linear ft. I-joists account for roughly 387o of the raised wood floor market, and are expected to total 557oby 2005.

SPI TIMBERLANDS

Your July issue of The Merchant Magazine Qt. 41) contained a brief article entitled "SPI Converting Timberlands," which was based upon what I would assume to be a source other than Sierra Pacific Industries. I say this because we do not refer to our forest management practices as converting our lands to "plantations," as was the main theme of the article.

SPI is developing a 10O-year plan for the management of its L5 million acres of forests in Califomia. In addition to managing its lands under California's forest practice rules, which are the most stringent in the nation, SPI also adheres to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, which results in harvesting no more than what grows in any given year while addressing environmental concerns.

Our computer-generated 10O-year plan is based on the combination of extensive forest inventory and environmental data and visually illustrates management plans for each of the company's watersheds in 10 year increments. This overall management plan promotes forest health (which will minimize the effects of wild fires). removal of inferior trees, growing several species of healthy trees at a faster rate, reforestation by planting seven trees for every one harvested and protection of water courses and wildlife habitat.

By developing such a comprehensive forest management plan, we can be assured that we'll have the resources for our manufacturing facilities for decades to come. No one realizes the fact that we must be good stewards of our lands more than we do.

The goal of BuildNet, for example, is to have homebuilders using one of its seven or eight construction management packages to do business electronically. Builder members do a take-off, submit it via the exchange over the Internet, and receive a quote from one or more member suppliers indicating availability, pricing and delivery information. Buyer members could then place an order, take delivery, be invoiced and make payments online.

Many also have plans for a universal catalog database of building product items, but developing and maintaining such a database is a daunting and expensive task. When in place, this catalog will facilitate the placing of orders online and the forwarding of the transaction documents to both the buyer's and seller's back-end systems.

Of course, exchange participation comes at a cost. Most have a monthly or annual price structure based on the size of the member's business, and also an ongoing transaction cost based on activity. Subscriptions can range from $2,000 to $25,000 per year, or more. depending upon company size and classification as a buyer- or seller-member of the exchange. DMSi is currently creating an interface to the BuildNet and Channelinx exchanges. Real, live customer transactions are expected to begin flowing through that interface, to and from both exchanges, as early as this month.

But exactly which exchange communities are best and which will prosper is difficult to say. It may be a combination of two or three. It's likely niche exchanges will begin popping up soon, such as roofing.com or millwork.com to target the specific contractor level. Users will need to determine which of these can benefit the majority of their customers.

Police Invade Lumberyard

A dozen squad cars from the local police surrounded and entered Product Sales Company's Orange, Ca., wholesale lumber yard at dusk recently.

But it wasn't a major bust. Rather, it was a planned training exercise for the police K-9 corps., invited in by owner Ted Gilbert.

The officers planted various substances around the yard and in the warehouse. The dogs were then turned loose to see how fast they could find the hidden packages.

Observing the police cars and the uniformed officers at work, Gilbert said he couldn't help wondering what his corporate neighbors must have thought was going on.

David A. Davis, 53, former operator of the now-defunct Valley Home Improvement Center, Burbank, Ca., died in an automobile accident Aug. 26 in West Knoxville, Tn.

A native of Glendale, Ca., he became a contractor at l9 and ran Valley Home Improvement Center until 1978, when he moved to Colonial. Tn.. and started Colonial Construction, a homebuilding firm.

At the time of his death, he reportedly was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer equipped with Firestone tires. police said, although authorities said

the tires did not cause the accident.

Authorities said he apparently lost control of his vehicle as he rounded a curve, adding that witnesses saw him talking on a cellular phone just before the vehicle ran off the road and flipped several times. He reportedly was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.

Sam J. Tarantino, 76, retired general manager, Tynan Lumber, Salinas, Ca., died Sept. 14 in Monterey, Ca.

A lifelong resident of Monterey, he served as a radioman first class in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 and was the general manager of Tynan Lumber for 47 years.

He was a member of the Hoo-Hoo Club.

AF&PA Exec's Letter On Track

Member company chief executives of the American Forest & Paper Association urged that increased rail competition be placed on next year's Congressional agenda in a letter to Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

The letter claimed that current policies permit railroads to "prevent competitive access to terminals, maintain monopolies through'bottleneck pricing,' and hamper the growth of viable short line and regional railroads through 'paper barriers."'

The letter also stated that the Surface Transportation Board "continues to adhere to policies that hamper rail competition," despite the fact that major North American railroads are poised for additional consolidation.

Inadequate competition is being blamed for delays in rail transit time, a particularly troublesome and expensive issue for the forest products industry, which heavily depends upon timely product shipments and deliveries.

While noting that 1980's Staggers Act sought to replace government regulation of railroads with market competition, the letter said that Class I railroads have declined from 30 in l9l6 to seven today.

Chief executives from 63 member companies signed the letter, a joint effort of AF&PA, the American Chemistry Council, Edison Electric Institute, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the American Public Power Association.

The CheckMark Quality Assurance Identification Program for Tfeated Wood.

To meet the requirements of the Uniform Building Code, treated wood must be identified by the quality mark of an accredited American Lumber Standard Committee inspection agency. In the West, five agencies are authorized under the ALSC Treated Wood Program to inspect treated wood. However, each agency has its own unique mark and is located in different positions on the stamp or end-tag making it difficult to find or recognize. But, not any longer.
